Testimonials

Megaphone shouting five stars

  • "This course if full of well-presented and critical information about how to successfully manage a professional research lab. There is a nice variety of speakers who seem to be experts in their various specialties of lab management. The course is very coherent and easy to follow, while sharing important information on how to successfully lead and manage Research Projects and Research labs."
  • “It is really spectacular, and I found the contents to be both informative and inspiring.”
  • “I’ve participated in programs on campus, and this really did a fantastic job summarizing many of the key points. But it also went well beyond these training opportunities and provided really specific advice on day-to-day lab management. As a result of reviewing the content, I have already set a specific set of goals for myself and my lab – particularly with regards to lab meetings, communication, and keeping track of budgets. I also realize that I have never actually asked my research assistants to provide me with feedback on how I can serve our lab better. I really appreciate these immediate areas of improvement and goal-setting that the training has provided. Thanks again for creating this wonderful resource!”
  • “Excellent content, germane to both MD and PhD faculty.”
  • “Faculty have obvious expertise, experience and bona fides and also exude kindness, altruism and professionalism. Everyone really shone bright as a role model.”
  • “I have the pleasure of knowing many of the faculty, but learned much more about them through their personal stories. That was in many ways a real highlight for me and makes these Towers of Academia more relatable.”
  • “This was FANTASTIC! I would highly recommend that this should be required training for any new physician-scientist starting their own lab, or once they receive their first internal or extramural funding. I feel very fortunate to have taken this course and to benefit from these faculty on a day-to-day basis!”
  • “It was beneficial to have the trainings compiled together in one place, taken sequentially, and available as resources. The variety of speakers was helpful to keep it interesting and engaging, and the topics were all helpful and pertinent. The finance and administration was perhaps the most dense of the material, but the visuals and examples were helpful for depth of understanding and will be great resources to keep for future. The management parts 1 & 2 were the most concrete sections and the step-by-step walk through of really managing the day to day of a research program was very helpful.”
  • “The content of this course is not taught in the classroom not readily available to new PIs. Having access to established source documents (i.e. financial data documents) and other pertinent data is a real stress/time saver.”
  • “This could be a helpful resource for students and early career researchers. Great insights and research and training.”
  • “Pay attention to the optional sections, as they are very interesting and give you a practical overview from experienced leaders. Watch the optional videos as they deliver great value as life teaching and exemplify what the student may come to live in the future.”
  • “A well thought out and organized class. Very good lectures and material. Excellent class!”

The course was developed by Dr. Anne Libby and Dr. Judy Regensteiner, and was supported by grants from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Medical Research Program and the CCTSI iCorps program, with additional support from the CU Center for Women’s Health Research, the CU School of Medicine, and the CU Department of Emergency Medicine.

Research Leadership Development Programme

The importance of establishing a positive research culture has never been more important, with clear institutional benefits including supporting successful grant applications and good research outcomes. UKRI alone has committed £2 billion in its 24/25 budget to support “talent initiatives” and the development of “future leadership” ( UKRI 2024-2025 Budget Allocations ).

Key to unlocking this, is to focus on research leadership skill development specifically designed for those working in research and research in academia.

Our Research Leadership Development Programme supports the development of research leaders at all levels in an institution to improve on existing research culture and research outcomes. The programme has three tiers, providing development for aspiring, emerging, and established research leaders. Each tier is uniquely tailored to support the organisational and individual needs at these career stages.

The programme will contribute to successful funding applications through effective and efficient delivery, and to research that creates an impact that enhances the institution’s global reputation. It will be particularly helpful for institutions in England that are looking to undertake the development of a healthy and thriving research culture, a key component in the upcoming REF.

The NIHR Leaders Support and Development Programme seeks to maintain and improve the quality of leadership in health and social care research. We aim to do this by meeting the development needs of current leaders and early to mid-career researchers within the NIHR, whose focus is aligned with the strategic priorities of the NIHR.

Our programme embodies in its design, structure, and approach the NIHR’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.  We are continually developing our provision to meet the evolving needs of our leadership communities. Provision currently includes:

  • Future-Focused Leadership Programme. Our flagship leadership programme for NIHR Leaders and NIHR Emerging Research Leaders.
  • The NIHR Academy Mentoring Programme. This programme offers doctoral and postdoctoral NIHR Academy Members the opportunity to seek support for their academic and career development from a mentor drawn from our wide NIHR leadership community.
  • Leadership Development Resources.  A suite of flexible, online modular resources to support your leadership and management development.

Future-Focused Leadership Programme

The NIHR Academy provides postdoctoral Academy Members with leadership development through its Future-Focused Leadership Programme.

The success framework

The Future-Focused Leadership Programme has been developed specifically for the NIHR following an in-depth analysis to understand what makes a successful leader. The programme offers you the opportunity to explore new thinking on how to lead in the 21st century. We have created the programme with reference to years of research in the fields of occupational psychology and applied positive psychology.

The programme is designed around exploring Leading Yourself, Leading Others and Leading Beyond Authority.

Here's what some of our participants say about the programme

“Despite doing other leadership courses, I feel this has been the most relevant to me in terms of bite-size pieces of learning that are wholly relevant” - Leader

“I was lucky enough to attend the Emerging Research Leaders programme and I highly recommend it for NIHR Academy members. It helped me develop my leadership skills and have the confidence to take the next steps in my career." - Dr Jane Freeman, Associate Professor in Clinical Microbiology at University of Leeds

Programme format

The Future-Focused Leadership Programme extends over a period of twelve months and incorporates three residential workshops, webinars and online modules. You will be able to apply the insights you uncover and the new skills you learn to your current role throughout the year and will be encouraged to network and share your experience and learning with fellow delegates.

Mentoring Programme

The NIHR Academy provides final year PhD and postdoctoral  Academy Members with career development support through its mentoring programme.

The refreshed NIHR Academy Programme supports final year PhD and postdoctoral academy members from a broad range of professional and disciplinary contexts across our diverse health and social care communities to mentor others and to seek a mentor. It builds on the NIHR Academy mentoring programme that was previously delivered with the Academy of Medical Sciences.

This programme will not impact on the programme delivered by our partnership with Health Education England, supporting researchers who are in receipt of an Integrated Clinical Academic award.

The programme has been developed and guided by a Steering Group whose membership is representative of Academy Members.

The programme aims to support the academic and career development of our post-doctoral communities by:

  • extending the NIHR Academy mentoring offering to post-doctoral award holders from disciplines and professional backgrounds which may not have a strong mentoring tradition, or may not have had access to programmes such as this in the past
  • promoting interdisciplinarity; mentees will be able to seek a mentor from a cognate or complementary discipline or professional background, where appropriate
  • supporting mentoring relationships between individuals from different organisations and institutions
  • promoting equality, inclusion and diversity through engagement with, and learning from, under-represented groups

Mentors and mentees will be supported throughout their participation in the programme through regular professional development events and resources. They will also have access to a mentoring platform to support and guide their mentoring relationships.

Note that this programme is for researchers undertaking research in England. Currently there are networking events specifically for GHR academy member  and a mentoring programme for GHR academy members is being developed.

Here's what some of our mentees and mentors have to say about the programme

“Thank you for the opportunity of being matched, this has been really helpful and something I would have struggled with without the NIHR assistance” - Mentee “Mentoring others can create useful reflections on my own development” - Mentor

Grad Students’ Research Examines Importance of Inclusive Leadership

With the support of their faculty mentor, Indra Ponnuswamy ’24 M.S. and Amina Almoustafa ’24 M.S. have conducted important research exploring the impact that inclusive leadership can have on the ability of employees to cultivate sustainable careers. Their work has already captured the attention of the Charger community – and beyond.

May 2, 2024

By Renee Chmiel, Office of Marketing and Communication

Amina Almoustafa ’24 M.S. (left) and Indra Ponnuswamy ’24 M.S. presented their research to the Charger community.

For Indra Ponnuswamy ’24 M.S., taking a "Multicultural Issues in the Workplace" class at the University of New Haven was a pivotal experience in her education. It inspired her while opening her eyes to the complexities of diverse workplaces and the challenges that employees face. It was also the beginning of her exciting research journey.

Ponnuswamy and her classmate Amina Almoustafa ’24 M.S. were inspired by today’s ever-evolving global landscape, and they recognize how important it is for employees to have the opportunity to cultivate sustainable careers. Intrigued by the importance of inclusive leadership and its potential to foster psychological capital, they believed it could contribute to sustainable career development.

The student-researchers began by conducting an extensive literature review. While exploring theories and empirical studies, they analyzed academic papers and identified areas where more research was needed. They collaborated to develop a conceptual model that explained the relationship between inclusive leadership and sustainable careers, proposing that behaviors of inclusive leaders – including respecting diversity and valuing uniqueness – could enhance employees’ psychological resources.

“We engaged in thought-provoking discussions, challenged each other's assumptions, and constantly refined our ideas,” recalls Ponnuswamy, a candidate in the University’s graduate program in human resources . “The teamwork aspect not only strengthened our research, but it also fostered personal growth and a deeper appreciation for diverse perspectives.”

‘Incredibly rewarding’

Ponnuswamy and Almoustafa recently presented their research paper, titled “How Inclusive Leadership Fosters Sustainable Careers: The Mediating Role of Psychological Capital," to their fellow Chargers as part of a graduate student research showcase at the University. The Office of Graduate & International Student Life recognized their work, awarding them a best research project award.

“Earning the award for our research project was incredibly rewarding after dedicating considerable time and effort to it,” said Almoustafa, a candidate in the University’s M.S. Human Resources program. “Being recognized among 60 projects reflects the value and impact of our topic, reinforcing our commitment to advancing knowledge in this area. It serves as validation of our hard work and underscores the significance of investigating the relationship between inclusive leadership, psychological capital, and sustainable career development.”

Amina Almoustafa ’24 M.S. and Indra Ponnuswamy ’24 M.S. displayed their research on campus.

‘Responsible management education isn’t confined to textbooks’

Khadija Al Arkoubi, Ph.D. , the students’ professor, served as their co-author and faculty mentor. Writing a paper that explored inclusive leadership was one of the students’ options for their final project in the "Multicultural Issues in the Workplace" class. Dr. Al Arkoubi says Ponnuswamy and Almoustafa eagerly accepted the challenge, calling them “exceptional students” who became “true research partners.

“Our collaborative effort yielded more than a research paper,” said Dr. Al Arkoubi. “It forged lasting connections, ignited intellectual curiosity, and instilled hope. Amina and Indra, now ambassadors of inclusive leadership, continue to inspire others.

“To me, mentoring them remains a source of profound fulfillment,” she continued. “It’s an affirmation that responsible management education isn’t confined to textbooks. It thrives in shared experiences and in making an impact on our communities and workplaces."

‘Unlock the full potential of their workforce’

The project was an incredible opportunity for Ponnuswamy and Almoustafa to build far more than their research skills. Almoustafa says that while researching inclusive leadership, she too grew as a leader. She also developed her teamwork and communication skills while learning how to navigate the challenges that can arise while conducting research.

The student-researchers say the course helped prepare them for their project, as the lectures and discussions offered a robust foundation of workplace knowledge. The class also ensured they understood research methodologies and had the analytical skills necessary to begin the intensive research project.

Amina Almoustafa ’24 M.S. (center) and Indra Ponnuswamy ’24 M.S. (right) discussed their work with their fellow Chargers.

For Almoustafa, the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from said Dr. Al Arkoubi helped her develop her confidence while strengthening her research skills.

“Working with Dr. Al Arkoubi was an enriching experience,” she said. “She provided unwavering support, guidance, and encouragement at every step of the research process. Her expertise and dedication helped us refine our ideas and communicate our findings coherently.”

The project hasn’t just been recognized by the Charger community – it is gaining attention in the field as well. The students will soon be presenting their work at the Eastern Academy of Management Conference in Providence, RI.

“We hope that our research will contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying sustainable career development and encourage organizations to adopt inclusive leadership practices,” said Ponnuswamy. “By nurturing psychological capital, organizations can unlock the full potential of their workforce, enabling employees to thrive and adapt in an ever-changing career landscape.”
