The scholarship is renewable for up to four years, as long as the student maintains good academic standing and participates in the Terry Scholars Program.

ABOUT THE TERRYS

terry scholarship leadership essay

A Legacy of Support

Currently the state’s largest private source of scholarships at 13 Texas public universities, the Terry Foundation has assisted more than 5,600 Texas college students since its inception in 1986. Howard Terry, who started the Foundation with his wife, Nancy, was so grateful for the financial assistance he received to attend college that he dedicated his time and resources to giving future generations of Texans this same opportunity. Today, the Foundation Board oversees a perpetual endowment that provides college scholarships for students who have demonstrated the capacity to become outstanding future leaders and who need financial assistance to achieve their educational goals.

Howard L. Terry

Native Texan Howard L. Terry was born in Milam County in 1916. He attended the University of Texas at Austin on an athletic scholarship and worked at Procter & Gamble after graduation. In 1942, Terry entered the U.S. Navy, serving as a P.T. Boat commander in the Pacific during World War II. He later returned to Procter & Gamble, from which he was recruited to set up a chain of appliance stores. In 1951, Terry went into business for himself in lumber, building, and development, and built several residential subdivisions in Texas and other states. Over the following years, Terry founded several businesses, including Business Funds, Marathon Manufacturing, Crutcher Resources, Allied Bancshares, and Farm & Home Savings. Beginning in 1979, he became a director and chairman of the executive committee of Penn Central Corp., a position he held until 1986. In 1981, he founded the Terry Companies, a multi-state corporation involved in oil and gas exploration and development. Howard Terry’s long and successful life came to an end in 2012 at age 95. In keeping with his own prediction, he maintained regular office hours and was active in the management of the Foundation until the very end of his life. His legacy was celebrated at a memorial service in Houston attended by a crowd estimated at 1,000.

Nancy Terry

Nancy Terry was a New York native, born in Ogdensburg on the St. Lawrence River. She attended the School of Nursing at the University of Rochester, where her hobbies included snow skiing, ice skating, swimming, and antique collecting. She subsequently relocated to Texas and was married to Howard L. Terry for over forty years. Participating in Foundation activities for many years, Nancy Terry passed away peacefully at home in October 2012 at age 85. She will always be remembered for her candid photos of the Scholars at Foundation events and for her life-long interest in the scholarship program that bears their name.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

My college journey has been a period of tremendous growth, both academically and personally. As a first-generation college student, I quickly realized that higher education held the key to unlocking a world of opportunities. My thirst for knowledge, paired with a relentless pursuit of excellence, has allowed me to excel academically. I have consistently maintained a high GPA while taking on a rigorous course load, demonstrating my commitment to academic success.

Beyond the classroom, I have actively sought out opportunities to engage with my peers and faculty members. By participating in research projects and attending academic conferences, I have fostered a genuine love for learning and an appreciation for the power of collaboration. These experiences have not only deepened my understanding of my chosen field but have also shown me the value of interdisciplinary approaches in solving complex problems.

However, my college experience has not solely been about personal growth; it has also been about making a positive difference in the lives of others. I firmly believe in the power of community engagement and its ability to create lasting impact. Through various service initiatives, I have had the privilege of working with marginalized communities and witnessing firsthand the transformative power of empathy and compassion.

One notable experience was my involvement with a local non-profit organization focused on empowering underprivileged youth through mentorship programs. Serving as a mentor, I witnessed the profound effect that individual attention and guidance can have on a young person's life. This experience taught me the value of investing in others and the immense potential that lies within every individual, regardless of their circumstances. It is this commitment to uplifting others that I hope to continue, with the support of the Terry Foundation Scholarship.

College has also provided me with numerous opportunities to develop my leadership skills and explore my passions outside of academia. I have actively sought out involvement in student organizations and clubs, assuming leadership roles that have sharpened my ability to communicate effectively, delegate responsibilities, and inspire others towards a common goal. These experiences have instilled in me a sense of responsibility and the belief that true leadership lies in empowering others to realize their full potential.

Moreover, my college experience has fostered personal growth, enabling me to navigate challenges with resilience and adaptability. I have learned to embrace failure as an opportunity for growth, viewing setbacks not as obstacles but as stepping stones towards success. Through perseverance and a growth mindset, I have developed the resilience necessary to overcome adversities and emerge stronger.

As I gaze into the future, I am filled with an unwavering desire to make a positive difference in society. With the support of the Terry Foundation Scholarship, I envision myself continuing my academic journey while actively engaging in research that addresses pressing social issues. I am particularly drawn to the Terry Foundation's emphasis on leadership, integrity, and service, as these values resonate deeply with my own.

The Terry Foundation Scholarship will not only provide me with the financial resources necessary to pursue my educational goals but will also grant me access to a network of like-minded individuals who share a common passion for making a lasting impact. I am eager to collaborate with fellow Terry Scholars, learn from their diverse perspectives, and collectively work towards building a better future.

In conclusion, my college journey has been marked by personal growth, academic excellence, and community engagement. I am grateful for the opportunities that education has afforded me and recognize the responsibility that comes with it. The Terry Foundation Scholarship represents an invaluable opportunity for me to continue my academic journey, contribute meaningfully to my community, and embody the values central to the Terry Foundation.
