Halloween 'fail': Professors mock 'sexy Ph.D.' costume on Amazon

Women's Phd Darling Sexy Costume

Looking for a Ph.D. in awful Halloween costumes? Well, you might want to head to Amazon , where this fine ensemble was spotted earlier this week.

Women's Phd Darling Sexy Costume

Like the infamous " Bic for Her " pen, the " Delicious Women's Phd Darling Sexy Costume " soon became a magnet for snarky comments and ironic reviews.

"As a lady Ph.D. student, let me say how much of a relief it is to see them accurately describe what we wear every day," commented  ajohns1290 .

"I am almost ready to defend the dissertation it has taken me so many years to prepare for," wrote another user . "I would love to have a sexy robe to wear for my graduation, but my school colors are maroon and gold. Why is this only available in blue?"

This "sexy graduation gown" comes with a gold sash and a hat, as well as a diploma, most likely in "terrible costume design." By now, it's not a surprise when a company like China-based Delicious (which sells the costume for $50) seemingly pulls an occupation out of a hat and places "sexy" in front of it. But the idea of a sexy Ph.D. really struck a nerve with women who earned advanced degrees.

Dr. Heidi Czerwiec, an associate professor of English at the University of North Dakota, told TODAY she and other commenters were trying to "counter absurdity with absurdity."

Sure, everyone had a good laugh at the costume, but it underscores a serious problem in academia today.

"What's not funny is that even within the university, women are still judged by their appearance," she said. "Student evaluations of female instructors, which can affect retention or promotion, often tie their opinions of a woman to her appearance."

Czerwiec pointed to the "chili pepper" attractiveness ratings on RateMyProfessors.com, which boasts over 14 million reviews.

"Costumes like these don't help," she said.

Amazon users also had a good time picking apart the "Women's Phd Darling Sexy Costume" for accuracy.

"It would be a lot better with ramen noodles and red wine stains on it, because that is what really would happen," Nancy Van Leuven, who has a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, told TODAY.

Between bouts of laughter, she explained that Ph.D. students don't wear square mortarboards while receiving their degrees, but don  caps   instead. The fact that this fine garment (96 percent polyester) must be hand-washed also sparked a chuckle.

"Can you tell this stuff cracks me up and horrifies at the same time?" she said.

"This is Tragic": PhD Student Scribes Lecturer's Bad Comments on Her Thesis for Halloween Shirt

  • A PhD student at the University of Manchester, England sent social media into a frenzy with her specially-made Halloween shirt
  • Savannah Clawson penned all the negative comments her project supervisor made to her thesis on the white shirt and flaunted it online
  • Social media users expressed surprise that she had been at the receiving end of such remarks and came ha*rd on the academic responsible

The young lady sported a specially-made white shirt that had remarks her project supervisor made to her thesis written in red.

She flaunted the front, and back view of the shirt and netizens knocked the supervisor as they read wordings on the clothing.

"Dressed as my supervisor's feedback on my PhD thesis for Halloween because nothing is scarier than reality," she tweeted with the photos of herself in the shirt.

Some of the remarks include, 'this is tragic,' 'pay more attention' and another that says 'a thesis is not a brain dump.'

Her post blew up on Twitter with over 13k likes and over 1k retweets. She would in a subsequent tweet come out to defend her supervisor and that her post was misconstrued.

"As this tweet is getting more attention than anticipated, I would like to point out that my supervisor is great and I'm super grateful that they read my thesis so thoroughly - all comments taken greatly out of context," she tweeted .

Poly suspends lecturer for forcing textbooks on students

Previously, a polytechnic lecturer was suspended for forcing textbooks on students.

Authorities said that it was a clear case of injustice to the educational system for any lecturer to impose textbooks or handouts on students before they could pass examinations.

They explained that some “forces” in the polytechnic who were against his transformation agenda made several efforts to truncate the ban on the sale of textbooks to students but failed.

The rector explained further that examination malpractices, cultism, social vices, forgery of results to get admission in the polytechnic is now a thing of the past, warning that the current management would deal decisively with anyone found wanting and breaking the law.

Costumes across campus: students prepare to dress up for Halloween

From a graduate student to a local comic to greek life members, four asu students break down the meanings, costs and processes behind their costumes.

IMG_2176.jpg

As Halloween creeps ever closer, take a look at the spooky, creepy and geeky costumes ASU students will rock on that fateful night.

As Halloween approaches, students across ASU are picking out and piecing together wickedly good costumes.

Whether they are investing in one meaningful costume, using pieces already in their closets or purchasing five days worth of unique looks, there is much that goes into the craft of costuming.

Four students shared how they crafted, budgeted and planned the perfect look for this Halloween season.

The Nostalgic Ninja Turtle

Riddhesh Bele, a first-year graduate student studying construction management and technology, grew up in India, where he said that Halloween was not as widely celebrated. He has always loved the holiday, even organizing his own small Halloween carnival in India. Now, he is preparing for his first Halloween party in the U.S.

"I've been looking forward to it from (the time) when I was applying to grad schools," he said.

At the party, Bele will don a bright green jumpsuit to become Michelangelo from "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."

"This is my first Halloween, and I will dress as my favorite character from back in my childhood," Bele said. He added that he hopes that the iconic cartoon series character will be recognizable following the 2023 release of the movie " Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem ."

#OOZETOBER . IS. HERE. celebrate this halloween season with us – we've got oozy surprises all month long! say it with us: OOOOOOOZEEEE! #TMNTMovie pic.twitter.com/p9ABz1myop — TMNT (@TMNTMovie) October 1, 2023

Bele ordered his costume, complete with a shell and Michelangelo's orange mask, from Walmart , where it currently costs $49.60. Now he said he is in the process of convincing his roommates to complete the look by dressing up as the other turtles.

Costumed in Context

Ethan Zohn, a junior studying digital audiences who does local comedy, recently put together a last-minute, cost-free costume for a Phoenix stand-up event on Oct. 13.

"I dressed up as my friend Maxwell," Zohn said, referencing a fellow local comic.

Zohn said he grabbed some khakis and a button down, pieces that are a part of Maxwell's "clean cut guy" onstage persona. To his surprise, the other event guests loved his clever rendition of one of their fellow comedians.

"Even people who don't really know me, they were like, 'I don't really know you, but this is a great costume,' so that's awesome," Zohn said.

The friend costume does not always work.

"It's context," Zohn said. "If I went anywhere else people would try to assume who I was."

Zohn is still planning what he will wear for other Halloween outings and brainstorming a costume that can lean into his work as a comic.

A recent song of his poked fun at the irony of people who dress up in "canceled costumes," as Zohn put it, but get upset when they feel their personal or political beliefs are misrepresented in other's costumes. To pay homage to this act, he said he might wear a bodysuit with a red cancel symbol.

Trick or Greek

"You dress up everyday: it's Halloweek," said Ellie Schmidt, a freshman studying nursing and a member of the sorority Kappa Alpha Theta.

Schmidt and her sorority sister Claire Montigny, also a freshman studying nursing, each have five different Halloween costumes planned to wear to greek life social events and parties.

Looking at her shopping receipts on her phone, Montigny calculated that she spent about $70 on costume supplies. She had a couple different strategies to keep up with the Halloween season's demand for different outfits while on a budget.

Many of her costume pieces she is sharing with her friends. She used low-cost, online retailers Shein and Amazon to keep expenses down, but tried to select base pieces for her costumes that she can restyle for future sorority events.

"Like the pink dress I wore for Princess Peach, I'll wear that," Montigny said.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by claire (@claire.montigny)

Schmidt was able to cut back on costs even more. She said she spent between $45 and $50.

"I basically had everything besides the accessories. I tried to DIY a lot of it," Schmidt said. She is also using makeup that she saved from past Halloweens.

Schmidt is most excited about debuting her Queen of Hearts costume, which she made by attaching playing cards to black clothes she already had in her closet using velcro. She will match with one of her fellow sorority members who is going as Alice from "Alice in Wonderland."

Schmidt said that she prefers to embrace the creative aspect of Halloween costumes, but that she knows some girls "just buy lingerie and they just turn it into a costume and that's enough."

"But we wanted to go all out," Montigny said.

"I wanted to go all out but be covered," Schmidt added.

For Montigny the most nostalgic costume in her lineup is Tinker Bell.

"For Tinker Bell it's kind of funny," Montigny said. "That was the theme of my room when I was younger and everyone is always like, 'You would be so cute as Tinker Bell,' so I just have to do it."

Though the pair agreed that all of the Halloween preparations were stressful, they said that they are excited to go out in all of their looks and happy they didn't go over budget in the process.

College of Social Work

Philip Osteen, PhD Dean & Professor

It is an understatement to say that the last year has been challenging for many of us here today. Many of these challenges are unique and personal, whereas others have arisen at the College, across the state, and throughout the nation. But we are not daunted by the challenges we face. Rather, we stand firm when called on to do so, and go boldly into the unknown when needed, with courage rooted in the core values and ethics of our profession, so that we can lay the path for those who follow.

I often reflect on why I chose to become a social worker, and then an educator and researcher, and ultimately the dean of this incredible College. And it always comes back to the deep calling I have to be of service to others. My dissertation, from a long, long time ago, explored this issue with hundreds of social work students around the country. Everyone had their own unique reasons, as I am sure everyone here today does. But throughout these many stories was the consistent message that service is the heart of social work. Which is why I often refer to social work as a noble calling. We did not come here to become wealthy (and if you did, I have some unfortunate news for you…). We did not come here for recognition or accolades. We came because each of us, on some level, was called to be of service. That, above all else, is what it means to be a social worker.

When I reflect upon my journey as a social worker, I am filled with deep gratitude. I am grateful for the opportunity to go to school and to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be an effective social worker. I am grateful to the many individuals and families who placed their trust in me and allowed me to be part of their journey toward recovery and healing. I am grateful for the mentors, colleagues, and teachers who shaped my understanding of the world and pushed me to become a reflexive and critical thinker. And I am grateful to you, our students—our graduates—who inspire me and give me purpose and meaning though this work. And finally, I am grateful to be part of a profession that grounds me in core ethics and values that challenge me to be my best, not for me, but for others, calls me to advocacy and activism, and inspires me to believe that together, we will accomplish great things. I truly hope that when you think about your journey, you are also filled with gratitude and proud to be a part of this amazing profession.

I have witnessed, firsthand, the power of your advocacy and activism, and I am inspired when I see you bring to life the values and ethics of social work. The choices you make and the actions you engage in have real impact in the world. As I have watched the class of 2024 over the past two years, I have seen, time and time again, your commitment to a better society. Through education, research, and community engagement, you bring the mission of the College of Social Work to life—the mission to alleviate human suffering, enhance wellbeing, and promote social justice.

In the Social Justice Seminar: Engaging Organizations and Communities in Social Change, students are asked to address a community concern they identify. Past projects have included building a well to provide running water on a reservation, and connecting immigrants with culturally competent mental health services. In Fall 2023, a group of three MSW students collaborated on a project to create safer and more inclusive school environments in Utah by training school social workers in restorative justice practices that address incidents of bullying. The student team developed an informational flyer, presented to 24 social workers in the Alpine School District, and set up a booth in April for the district’s mental health night. Often change happens in incremental steps, and the students in this team diligently worked to create materials that can transcend the semester-long project, and effect long-lasting change in the lives of kids who are bullied every day.

An annual highlight in the Social Policy course is the writing and submission of opinion articles, for which students are asked to exercise their right to free speech by developing an op-ed on a social welfare policy topic that they submit to a news outlet. In fall of 2023 alone, 16 student op-eds were published in local newspapers. In these pieces, students reflected on their experiences as social work students—sometimes including their own lived experience perspectives—with topics ranging from the rights of transgender and non-binary persons, to advocacy for reproductive health and choice, to ways to build law enforcement capacity to work with community members with autism. The students appealed to local and national audiences to pay attention, speak up, and become involved in these important causes.

Photo of the backs of MSW graduates, with a hat decorated to read "Mommy did it!!"

Our BSW students also tackle problems on all levels—and they’ve proven particularly adroit this year at zeroing in on issues large and small that need addressing. They lead the annual Officers Hollow Halloween event that brings hundreds of community children and their families to campus for a safe, fun-filled, costume-rich Saturday each October. And this year the BSW Student Association gathered supplies and put together harm reduction kits for a Salt Lake Harm Reduction Project focused on public health service.

There are many, many more examples of this impressive work—certainly a story for every student here today. But I hope this sampling provides a bigger picture of the richness and complexity of your contributions. Whether on campus or in the community, whether through the written word in publications or the spoken word with clients and agencies, we are proud of the collective actions of our students.

Students—graduates—and soon to be colleagues: it will always be important to stand up for the values and ethics of the social work profession. And you’ve demonstrated you are up to the challenge.

Of course, there will inevitably be times when advocacy doesn’t work—or doesn’t work the way we want, or doesn’t work at first try. Does that mean we give up? Absolutely not.

As Martin Luther King, Jr. said: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” And you are all part of the progress. Through your actions—in the classroom and beyond—you have:

  • Inspired community members and clients to consider different perspectives;
  • Led faculty and staff to think of new ways to provide support for future students;
  • Influenced the way College leadership considers ideas and responds to them; and
  • Changed the way University administration will manage and communicate about potentially controversial events on campus.

I encourage you to also think about how we fit in with the diverse array of disciplines that impact our world.

Our colleagues in architecture and planning focus on the creation of meaningful spaces and structures, as we work with those without housing.

Our colleagues in science engage in groundbreaking research to unravel the mysteries of life and the universe, and we engage in rigorous research to understand the practices most likely to benefit our clients and communities.

Our colleagues in engineering create some of the finest and most exciting technologies in the world, and we work to bridge the gap to ensure that underserved peoples and communities have access to these advances.

Our colleagues in business serve as catalyst for entrepreneurial creations and sound business and financial practices, and we work with poor, financially vulnerable, and under resourced peoples and communities.

Our colleagues in humanities seek to understand the nuances of cultural issues, the human experience, and the power of words and ideas, and we engaged in the challenging process of critical self-reflection of our own culture and experiences so that we can be more effective social workers.

I could list so many more examples, but my point is that wherever you find people, you will find social workers. There are no issues impacting society that we don’t engage with.

And as evidenced by these examples, we stand on the fundamental truth that together, we are better.
