Writing Task 2: Students in single-sex schools perform better

Write about the following topic:

Some people think that students in single-sex schools perform better academically. Others, however, believe that mixed schools provide children with better social skills for adult life.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least  250  words. 

Sample Answer 1:  [In favour of mixed schooling system]

Some people affirm that students in male or female-only schools have better chances for academic achievements, whereas, many others point out that co-ed schools offer students better social skills for their future. This essay will discuss both these views, but the writer is in favour of a mixed-sex school. Admittedly, single-sex schools have fewer distractions. This is because if a school has only boys or girls, students would not be distracted by members of the opposite sex at school; hence, they can focus on their learning. But, these students still have access to the other gender after school, which means, in reality, they must meet the other gender anyway. Consequently, single-sex schools do not guarantee better academic performance and results. On the contrary, students studying at mixed schools have more chances to communicate with members of the opposite sex. In other words, children learn how to interact with the other gender at an early age; therefore, their social skills would certainly be fostered. Moreover, mixed schools give students opportunities to deal with conflicts with the other gender, which strengthens students’ problem-solving skills. For instance, when a boy has a conflict with a girl, both of them must learn how to cope. This lesson must be learned sooner or later; as a result, students benefit more if they can learn it sooner. Finally, mixed schools provide students with a real-life scenario where both genders co-exist. Specifically, students can learn in an organic environment in which boys and girls must know how to interact with each other. In conclusion, I would concede that single-sex schools have some minor advantages. Despite that combined schools certainly support students better and prepare learners to become more socially adept. Overall, I am convinced that students should go to mixed schools for better professional, social and adult life.

Sample Answer 2:  [In favour of single-sex schooling system]

The debate over whether single-sex schooling is superior to a “co-educational” system has been rumbling on for decades. But, after analyzing the views and opinions from both sides in an objective manner, it would be fairly easy to conclude that the “single-sex” option is slightly better, and this essay will try to explain why that is the case.

It is true to some extent that the “co-ed” schooling system provides students with better social skills. After all, in such a system, boys and girls can learn to behave with each other from a very young age and grow together to be cooperative. Besides, the interaction between boys and girls isolates some of the “less desirable aspects” of both sexes.

On the contrary, a considerable advantage of single-sex education is that students in this educational system feel much more relaxed than their “co-ed” counterparts. Such relaxed feelings are cultivated in the absence of a “desire” to impress or attract the opposite sex. In other words, students in such an environment are more true to themselves and have the freedom to behave as they please, and as such, they are more willing to take risks since there is no fear of failing in front of the members of the opposite sex. As a result, the classrooms are more often dynamic, free, and bursting with ideas and conversation – all are hallmarks of a great education.  

Besides, many studies and research suggest that boys and girls tend to learn different things differently. For example, girls are usually ahead in reading, writing and spelling, while boys are ahead in mathematics. Boys need more intensive input in these areas of literacy, so only separating them would ensure that they are getting proper guidelines and lessons in these areas.

Therefore, from the discussion above, we can conclude that single-sex education should be a preferred option even though mixed education can sometimes provide better social skills to young learners.

Some people think that it is better to educate boys and girls in separate schools. Others, however, believe that boys and girls benefit more from attending mixed schools.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

It is often argued that school children should go to single sex schools, while other would say that males and females get the most out of integrated schools. This essay will argue that despite there being some social benefits to females and males going to the same school, the academic advantages of educating them separately make it more worthwhile.

Many feel that mixing both sexes at school helps to develop social skills and makes people less awkward around the opposite sex later in life. This is especially true for males, who often find it difficult to approach and talk to women socially if they don’t get used to it first in the classroom. For example, the Sunday Times recently reported that men who did not have regular social contact with girls when they were growing up are 68% more likely to suffer from anxiety when in the company of females.

Despite the argument above, it is difficult to argue with the fact that single-sex schools consistently top examination league tables. In nearly every area of the United Kingdom, the top schools only allow boys or girls to attend and this may lead to higher grades because students can focus exclusively on their studies. Personally, I went to a school for both boys and girls and found that I had to deal with many more distractions compared to friends who attended the local boys-only college.

In conclusion, integrating the sexes can prevent social awkwardness later in life and make pupils more sociable in the company of other genders, but a school’s primary purpose is to educate and those with just one sex or the other outperform those that allow both.

According to some people, kids / children who go to gender isolated schools will be at a disadvantage in their adult life. I agree with this view to a great extent. While I do admit that single sex schools provide some benefits, in my opinion, this method of schooling is largely detrimental for students as it hurts their social skills.

The biggest advantage of sending children to a single sex school is that it enables them to focus on their studies. In a co-educational school, children often get distracted by students of the opposite gender. For example, girls may get infatuated by boys or vice-versa. Such distractions can hurt their scores and overall academic performance.

On the other hand, children going to schools where there are only boys or girls also tend to have limited social skills. As they hardly get any opportunity to interact with the opposite sex in an informal setting like the classroom, they become anxious when they have to talk to members of the opposite sex outside school. This anxiety can affect their confidence levels and make their interactions with the opposite sex awkward. This inability, unfortunately, will have greater repercussions when these kids grow up into adults and enter the workplace. In the real world and the modern workplace, there are both men and women and an inability to effortlessly interact with all people is an essential trait for success. Since same-sex school educated students often lack this skill, their professional and personal life often suffer.

In short, to a great extent, I agree with the argument that studying in a same sex school is disadvantageous for students as it hurts their social skills and makes it difficult for them to have healthy interactions with members of the opposite sex. Of course, there are some minor advantages to this method of schooling, but they often pale in comparison to the disadvantages.

It seems that across the western world, an increasing number parents are opting to return to more traditional divisions with regards their children’s education, with a significant rise in most western countries of single sex classrooms, in which the classroom set up involves the teacher working with only boy’s or only girls. For many, the issue is whether to opt for a mode of teaching that improves a child’s academic learning or to choose a co-educational schooling offering a more ‘rounded’ education. There is no doubt that boys and girls have a very different way of learning, with research showing that boys learn better through movement, sound and touch, whereas girls learn better through visual and oral means. One clear advantage of a single sex educational setting is that the teacher fs able to focus on specific styles of teaching to the gender they are teaching. Naturally, the resurgence of single sex education has meant that many teachers have had to undergo additional in appropriate techniques for the environment.There are many potential advantages for children studying in single sex schools, Some children succeed in single sex schools because of the lack of social pressure – children are more able to learn and grow at their own pace without the pressure commonly found between the genders in co-educational schools, Research done in a single sex school concluded that students thrived in what often became a dose-knit environment with closer interaction with teachers. In surveys of over 1000 single sex schools, it was reported that not having the opposite sex around was ‘missed’, but the absence of boys or girls allowed students to have a more direct and serious approach to their education.

In many western countries, the traditional way of thinking around thirty years ago was that co-education would somehow break down gender stereotypes, but this hasn’t always proved to be the case, The advocates of single sex education argue that boys in coeducational settings are less likely to study the arts or advanced academic subjects just to avoid the social categorization of certain subjects as being more in the feminine realm. Equally, girls may tend avoid the sciences and technology subjects as this has traditional been more of a male domain. Single sex schools are flourishing once again as parents realise that allowing their son or daughter to learn in his or her own individual way is a very important consideration in choosing a school.For students attending single-sex secondary schools, there was a slight tendency for males to outperform females. In contrast, for students attending coeducational schools, there was a clear tendency for females to outperform males. It was also noted that in single sex schools girls were more likely to be involved in leadership activities such as student councils, athletic associations, and other activities additional to the school timetable. Accordingly, girls have reported to have favoured single sex schools as co-educational environments tend to be dominated by males, a situation often perpetuated by teaching staff.Regardless of increased levels of academic performance and preference, a small percentage of people concerned about gender equality have argued against single-sex education as an ethical issue, in that forced separation between the sexes is forced on students. In order for schools to run single-sex classrooms, they must also offer parents the opportunity to enrol their children in a traditional co-educational classroom.In regards to those who may oppose gender segregation in schools, many advocates of the idea believe single-sex classes actually negate gender stereotypes, As mentioned earlier, in a mixed classroom, boys tend to avoid tasks related to the arts while girls show Jack of interest in science and technology.

However, in single-sex environments, there is no existing bias that “this is for boys” or “that is for girls”. In fact, a 2005 study released by Cambridge University showed that in single-sex rooms, as compared to to traditional settings, girls are more interested in math and science, subjects generally preferred by boys in co-educational settings.It is important to remember that coeducation is a modern concept, introduced into mainstream education less titan fifty years ago, despite being a change which has brought huge changes to the societies in which this method is observed. It was first introduced in Switzerland, and swept quickly around most western countries, and is certainly not without its benefits. Parents have said that a coeducational classroom has been excellent for their children’s confidence levels, has helped them to overcome issues such as shyness and helped students to converse about everyday topics with the opposite gender, surveys have also shown that a higher percentage of girls in the classroom lower classroom disruption, also creating a better relationship between the students and the teacher.Which type of schooling is best comes down to what suits the individual child and which environment they best thrive in, therefore parents are recommended to seek advice and do their research before making that all important decision.

Here is another of my IELTS model essays for IELTS Writing Task 2 . It’s a discuss both views essay question from the IELTS General Training Test:

Some people think that it is better to educate boys and girls in separate schools. Others, however, believe that boys and girls benefit more from attending mixed schools. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

(Cambridge IELTS Book 8 General Training Test B)

This question topic is education, specifically whether schools should be co-educational (i.e. both girls and boys) or single sex (i.e. separate schools for girls and boys).

The two views in this task are clearly opposite ones: one view argues for separate schools; the other for co-educational schools. You will probably support one view, but you still need to acknowledge the arguments for both views, including the one you disagree with. This means you need to present the arguments for both views.

If you’re going to practise your writing using this question, but you are struggling to generate ideas for your  IELTS essay , it’s a good idea to look online for arguments for the two views. For example, h ere is an interesting article which gives arguments for single sex schools . (Personally I think some of these arguments are a bit exaggerated!)

My Essay Plan

Here is my essay plan. Remember, it’s really important to plan your IELTS essay or you can get lost when you write. I find it difficult to write a clear, coherent essay without a plan.

View 1 (it’s better to have separate schools for boys and girls)

  • fewer distractions from opposite sex (fashion, behaviour, etc) so can focus on study
  • girls more likely to study subjects traditionally seen as boys subjects – e.g. science

View 2 (boys and girls benefit more from co-ed schools)

  • schools can challenge these stereotypes, girls outperforming boys in the UK in science
  • they learn to socialise with members of opposite sex – important social skill
  • schools can proactively encourge girls in subjects like science
  • school is both a learning environement and social one too, so crucial to allow mixing of genders – school should reflect real world because it is preparing young people for the real world

Many countries offer parents the choice of whether to send their children to single sex schools or co-educational schools, and there are various arguments for both systems.

One justification for educating boys and girls separately is that young people will not be distracted by a desire to impress members of the opposite sex through such things as fashion, behaviour, body image or make-up. This not only means that students can instead focus on their studies, but they are likely to feel more confident. Another reason is that in a girls’ school, girls are more likely to do well in subjects traditionally seen as “boy’s subjects”, such as science, because they don’t have to overcome these stereotypes.

However, such stereotypes can be challenged. When schools actively encourage girls to study these so-called boys’ subjects, they can attain high levels. In the United Kingdom, for example, where co-educational schools are common, girls are now achieving higher levels of attainment in science than boys, which seems to undermine the argument that girls do better in single sex schools. It should also be recognised that schools are not just educational environments, they are also social settings, and having boys and girls mixing together means that young people learn to socialise and work together with members of the opposite sex. Without that socialisation, boys in particular pay have difficulty interacting with girls as they get older.

Personally I feel that if schools actively challenge traditional gender biases towards certain subjects, then there is little justification for single sex schools. And I think it is important to recognise the importance of a school in developing social skills, and therefore mixed gender schools seem to be the ones most parents prefer. After all, schools are supposed to prepare young people for the real world, and there in most countries there is little if any gender segregation.

Sample Answer 1: [View: Supporting co-educational/mixed-sex school system.] Opinions are split among many when it comes to whether boys and girls get benefits from being taught together or not. Many people prefer single-gender schools, while others argue that mixed schools bring more benefits. However, I incline to view that co-educational schools are the way forward.

Advocates of single-sex schools believe that boys and girls have different attitudes towards learning and teachers can employ particular techniques designed specially to match the gender. For instance, studies reveal that boys learn better when the classroom temperature is cool, while girls perform better in warm classrooms. So, the temperature in a single-gender classroom could be set to suit the different needs of male or female students. In addition, when students are not distracted by their opposite sex, they often find it easier to focus on academics. This means that students participate actively in classes where everybody is the same sex.

On the other hand, the proponents of mixed schools argue that co-ed schools prepare their students better for their future careers. That is to say that when boys and girls are taught in the classroom, they can develop teamwork skills with the opposite sex. This is an opportunity that completely lacks in single-gender classrooms. This opportunity is of paramount importance because it mirrors the real world. Moreover, mixed schools provide the chance to understand and communicate with the opposite sex. Boys and girls have different perspectives and in a mixed school, they manage to learn from each other.

In conclusion, the prime objective of education is to prepare students for future life. In co-educational schools, girls and boys learn from each other and can see the world in a different light from different perspectives. Mixed schools, thus, inculcate certain values and principles that are useful for their future.

Sample Answer 2: [View: Supporting separate/single-sex school system.] Whether a single-sex or a uni-sex school is more advantageous and yields better results are open for debate. Single-sex schools are preferred by many since they believe that it ensures a better environment for education while the proponents of coeducation argue that boys and girls should be taught together for healthy competition and better mutual understanding. Personally, I prefer the single-sex school method.

The advocates of the mixed-education system often point out that when boys and girls study in the same school, they grow a mutual understanding. As a result, it ensures a wholesome work environment in the future. Moreover, this education system encourages positive competition and helps students excel not only in their studies but also in other important areas. For instance, when boys and girls are assigned to a project, they tend to learn how to work together. Reversely, they often compete to show their supremacy and thus excel in education and learning. But this is not the whole picture.

As a female, and as a student in both coeducational and separate schools, I must outline that I felt more comfortable being with girls than boys. In a perfect world, mixed-sex schools may produce far-reaching benefits, but not in a world where we are often shattered by the harsh reality. Single-sex schools have less violence, sexual discrimination and abuse. Bringing very young boys and girls together in schools has consequences that often lead to social degradation.

To conclude, despite some advantages, coeducation has severe problems. From my experience, I can say that a separate educational system is healthy, free of discrimination and abuse. I hope that parents would be very thoughtful before deciding to send their children to a particular school type.

Model Answer 3: [View: Boys and girls benefit more from attending mixed schools] While some people support single-sex schools as they think it brings better results, others are in favour of mixed-gender schools. Personally, I believe that both genders benefit more from attending mixed schools. This essay will explore the arguments supporting both perspectives and present reasons why mixed schools provide a more conducive learning environment for students.

Supporters of separate schools argue that gender-segregated education allows for tailored teaching methods that cater to the specific learning needs of boys and girls. They claim that separating the genders eliminates distractions and allows teachers to focus on gender-specific teaching strategies. For instance, proponents suggest that boys may excel in more competitive and physical activities, while girls may benefit from a nurturing and collaborative learning environment.

Conversely, attending mixed schools provides numerous advantages for both boys and girls. First and foremost, mixed schools mirror the real-world setting, where individuals interact and collaborate with people of different genders. This fosters the development of social skills, empathy, and mutual respect, essential qualities for success in personal and professional relationships. For instance, in a mixed school, boys and girls have opportunities to work together on group projects, promoting teamwork and understanding.

I believe that mixed schools promote a diverse and inclusive learning environment, fostering the exchange of different perspectives and ideas. Besides, students learn to appreciate and respect different opinions, preparing them for the multicultural society they will encounter outside the educational setting.

In conclusion, while some argue for the merits of separate schools in terms of tailored teaching methods, I strongly believe that boys and girls benefit more from attending mixed schools. Mixed schools provide a realistic and inclusive setting that mirrors the real world, enabling students to develop social skills and learn from diverse perspectives.

In many countries today, parents are able to choose to send their children to single-sex schools or co-educational schools. Some people think that children going to single-sex schools have disadvantages later in life.   To what extent do you agree?

Sample Answer

Parents have every right to decide the best for their children, whether it is the choice of career or the choice of their ward’s school. The question that arises here for the parents is, “Single-sex school or co-education school?”. Different people have different ideologies that sprout different perspectives. These depend upon a number of factors such as their brought-up, surroundings, individual thought processes, and many more factors. These factors motivate parents to choose either one of the given options.

Parents generally have different apprehensions regarding both types of schools. Single-sex schools present the fear of stagnating growth and personality development issues at a later stage. Co-education schools present a possibility of distracting the students with issues such as attraction to the opposite gender.

In my opinion, co-education schools are the best option for children today. Such schools are very much in sync with the general way of life, wherein, both the genders work and live in harmony. In such a situation, my question is, “why separate them in their primary learning phase?

There are many advantages to the co-education system. Students learn to respect the opposite gender, and feel no hesitation while working or living alongside. Other benefits might include more healthy competition, more lively interaction, more fruitful debates, and more organized lifestyles. I agree that there might be a few drawbacks taking place in singled out cases, but these involve other factors as well.

But at the end of the day, my opinion would be in favour of co-educational schools. This is because they help in the complete development of the society and help in shaping its future in a correct manner.

There has been a longstanding debate on whether co-ed schools are more beneficial than single-sex schools. While some argue that co-ed schools provide a more realistic social environment and better prepare students for the real world, others believe that single-sex schools offer a more focused and tailored approach to education. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives and provide my own opinion.

On one hand, proponents of co-ed schools argue that they mirror the real world, where men and women work and interact together. They believe that co-ed schools provide students with the opportunity to learn how to communicate and collaborate with the opposite sex, which is an important skill for their future careers and personal lives. Additionally, co-ed schools can offer a wider range of extracurricular activities and opportunities for social interaction, which can contribute to a more well-rounded education.

On the other hand, supporters of single-sex education argue that it allows for a more tailored approach to teaching, as teachers can cater their methods to the specific learning styles of either boys or girls. They also claim that single-sex schools can eliminate distractions related to romantic relationships and peer pressure, allowing students to focus more on their studies. Furthermore, some studies have suggested that students in single-sex schools achieve better academic results.

In my opinion, both types of schools have their own advantages and disadvantages. While co-ed schools may provide a more realistic social environment, single-sex schools can offer a more focused and tailored approach to education. Ultimately, the effectiveness of a school depends on various factors such as the quality of teaching, resources, and the individual needs and preferences of the students.

In conclusion, the debate over co-ed schools versus single-sex schools is complex and multifaceted. Both types of schools have their own unique benefits, and the decision of which type of school to attend should be based on the individual needs and preferences of the students and their families.

CO- EDUCATIONAL VERSUS SINGLE-SEX CLASSROOMS

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1 – 12, which are based on Reading Passage below.

It seems that across the western world, an increasing number parents are opting to return to more traditional divisions with regards their children’s education, with a significant rise in most western countries of single sex classrooms, in which the classroom set up involves the teacher working with only boy’s or only girls. For many, the issue is whether to opt for a mode of teaching that improves a child’s academic learning or to choose a co-educational schooling offering a more ‘rounded’ education. There is no doubt that boys and girls have a very different way of learning, with research showing that boys learn better through movement, sound and touch, whereas girls learn better through visual and oral means. One clear advantage of a single sex educational setting is that the teacher fs able to focus on specific styles of teaching to the gender they are teaching. Naturally, the resurgence of single sex education has meant that many teachers have had to undergo additional in appropriate techniques for the environment. There are many potential advantages for children studying in single sex schools, Some children succeed in single sex schools because of the lack of social pressure – children are more able to learn and grow at their own pace without the pressure commonly found between the genders in co-educational schools, Research done in a single sex school concluded that students thrived in what often became a dose-knit environment with closer interaction with teachers. In surveys of over 1000 single sex schools, it was reported that not having the opposite sex around was ‘missed’, but the absence of boys or girls allowed students to have a more direct and serious approach to their education. In many western countries, the traditional way of thinking around thirty years ago was that co-education would somehow break down gender stereotypes, but this hasn’t always proved to be the case, The advocates of single sex education argue that boys in coeducational settings are less likely to study the arts or advanced academic subjects just to avoid the social categorization of certain subjects as being more in the feminine realm. Equally, girls may tend avoid the sciences and technology subjects as this has traditional been more of a male domain. Single sex schools are flourishing once again as parents realise that allowing their son or daughter to learn in his or her own individual way is a very important consideration in choosing a school. For students attending single-sex secondary schools, there was a slight tendency for males to outperform females. In contrast, for students attending coeducational schools, there was a clear tendency for females to outperform males. It was also noted that in single sex schools girls were more likely to be involved in leadership activities such as student councils, athletic associations, and other activities additional to the school timetable. Accordingly, girls have reported to have favoured single sex schools as co-educational environments tend to be dominated by males, a situation often perpetuated by teaching staff. Regardless of increased levels of academic performance and preference, a small percentage of people concerned about gender equality have argued against single-sex education as an ethical issue, in that forced separation between the sexes is forced on students. In order for schools to run single-sex classrooms, they must also offer parents the opportunity to enrol their children in a traditional co-educational classroom. In regards to those who may oppose gender segregation in schools, many advocates of the idea believe single-sex classes actually negate gender stereotypes, As mentioned earlier, in a mixed classroom, boys tend to avoid tasks related to the arts while girls show Jack of interest in science and technology. However, in single-sex environments, there is no existing bias that “this is for boys” or “that is for girls”. In fact, a 2005 study released by Cambridge University showed that in single-sex rooms, as compared to to traditional settings, girls are more interested in math and science, subjects generally preferred by boys in co-educational settings. It is important to remember that coeducation is a modern concept, introduced into mainstream education less titan fifty years ago, despite being a change which has brought huge changes to the societies in which this method is observed. It was first introduced in Switzerland, and swept quickly around most western countries, and is certainly not without its benefits. Parents have said that a coeducational classroom has been excellent for their children’s confidence levels, has helped them to overcome issues such as shyness and helped students to converse about everyday topics with the opposite gender, surveys have also shown that a higher percentage of girls in the classroom lower classroom disruption, also creating a better relationship between the students and the teacher. Which type of schooling is best comes down to what suits the individual child and which environment they best thrive in, therefore parents are recommended to seek advice and do their research before making that all important decision.

Is Single-Sex Education Still Useful?

Note: This Student Opinion question was written by a member of an experimental Student Council we ran during the 2015-16 school year. He is a junior at an all-boys’ high school in Boston.

Are all-boys or all-girls schools still useful? What are their benefits? With the emergence of new ideas about the fluidity of gender identity , do they even still make sense?

For example, what happens if a transgender student applies to a single-sex school, or if an enrolled student transitions?

In “ Old Tactic Gets New Use: Public Schools Separate Girls and Boys ,” Motoko Rich provides some context about the educational role of these schools:

Single-sex education, common in the United States until the 19th century, when it fell into deep disfavor except in private or parochial schools, is on the rise again in public schools as educators seek ways to improve academic performance, especially among the poor. Here at Charles Drew Elementary School outside Fort Lauderdale, about a quarter of the classes are segregated by sex on the theory that differences between boys and girls can affect how they learn and behave. ... The theory is generally held in low regard by social scientists. But Ms. Flowers notes that after the school, where nearly all students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches, started offering the classes two years ago, its state rating went from a D to a C. Similar improvements have been repeated in a number of other places, causing single-sex classes to spread to other public school districts, including in Chicago, New York and Philadelphia.

But questions about the mission of single-sex education have become especially relevant at women’s colleges in recent years thanks to an evolving understanding of gender identity. In a 2014 Op-Ed, “ Who Are Women’s Colleges For? ”, Kiera Feldman writes:

But today, women’s colleges are at a crossroads their founders could never have foreseen, struggling to reconcile their mission with a growing societal shift on how gender itself is defined. A handful of applications from transgender women have rattled school administrators over the past year, giving rise to anxious meetings and campus demonstrations. On April 29, the Department of Education issued new guidance: Transgender students are protected from discrimination under Title IX.

And in another 2014 piece, “ When Women Become Men at Wellesley ,” Ruth Padawer introduces us to Timothy Boatwright, who was raised a girl and checked “female” when he applied, but introduced himself at college as “masculine-of-center genderqueer.” He asked everyone at Wellesley to use male pronouns and the name Timothy, which he’d chosen for himself. Ms. Padawer writes:

Some two dozen other matriculating students at Wellesley don’t identify as women. Of those, a half-dozen or so were trans men, people born female who identified as men, some of whom had begun taking testosterone to change their bodies. The rest said they were transgender or genderqueer, rejecting the idea of gender entirely or identifying somewhere between female and male; many, like Timothy, called themselves transmasculine. Though his gender identity differed from that of most of his classmates, he generally felt comfortable at his new school.

Nowadays, education remains a vital issue. Most particularly, the choice between mixed school and unmixed school. On the one hand, people argue that single sex schools provide many benefits and allow better training and more discipline. On the other hand, others consider that co-educational schools offer diversity and more gender balance. In my opinion, unmixed schools are old-fashioned and unable to cope with modern stakes such as gender equality. My essay will emphasise my view.

One key advantage provided by mixed schools is their ability to shape children to live in a modern world which admits diversity. Indeed, usually, co-educational schools promote open-minded behaviours due to the fact that their scholar programmes are created by the government. Furthermore, almost all Western countries have created public policies to encourage gender equality, and specially at school. If a child goes to a public and mixed school, he will learn the importance of gender balance and the coexistence between men and women. Consequently, single sex schools are not able to educate children to correctly handle gender diversity.

Moreover, it is well-known that co-educational schools tend to get better results than unmixed schools. One reason for that is because mixed classes create better atmospheres that provide an efficient training. Indeed, it can’t be denied that boys’ schools might incite more competition and aggressivity. For example in France, the Haby Law which had been voted in 1975 obligated public schools to become mixed and in the next few years the pupils’ level increased sharply.

Nevertheless, It is an irrefutable fact that freedom of education remains a fundamental right and parents must keep their possibility to choose either a mixed school or an unmixed school. Furthermore, single sex schools can offer a different type of education which would be more conservative, but like gender diversity is essential in a modern society, political diversity is also vital in a democracy.

To conclude, I believe that co-educational schools provide more advantages than single sex schools because they are more able to respect gender equality. However, unmixed schools are still important owing to freedom of education must be preserved in a democracy.

IELTS Task 2 coeducational VS single

samenmohammad 10 / 19   Aug 2, 2012   #1 Task: Some people think that it is better to educate boys and girls in separate schools. Others, however believe that boys and girls benefit more from attending mixed schools. Discuss both views. These days, schools play an important role in our society as children spend a lot of time there. So, this fact that how schools are managed has a direct effect on the quality of student's education. The case in point is whether co-educational system could give us more benefit than single sex schools. In this piece of writing, I would like to express my personal views regarding the comparison of these two educational systems. As single sex schools used to be in many countries from many years ago, some people think that they are the best schools for children. They believe that students have more concentration on their studies in single sex schools. Therefore, better results could be achieved in these schools when we compare them with co educational schools. Moreover, people are less worried about the relationships between girls and boys. As reported in Today newspaper in 1 July 2011, students who studied in co educational schools usually had many problems with the opposite sex. On the other hand, base on scientific researches, students who study in mixed schools often could be more reliable and have a better communication with variety type of people in society. Because scientists believe that attending in schools should provide not only pure scientific educations but also social developments for pupils. Besides, new evidences show mental problems which is related to co educational system could happen in single sex schools too. Personally I think that co educational schools could benefit our society in many ways and although there are a few problems in these schools, their pros far outweigh the cons of them.
