Your SOP must be a dive into relevant life experiences, academic, and professional background (if applicable), career goals, co-curricular activities, volunteering/community involvement, and more.

So, refer to the effective guidelines given below to draft a stellar BBA statement of purpose.

How to Draft a Statement of Purpose for BBA Admission

Introduction

What motivated you to choose business administration or management as your interest? What is the strongest experience that led you to select this field? Being an undergraduate student, the university does not expect you to know about your future plans and decisions with conviction. But, you can elaborate on how you developed an interest in the particular discipline.

For example , while volunteering for a fundraiser at your school fair, you were in charge of giving ideas and organizing different stalls. You can elaborate on how this formative experience eventually translated into your passion for entrepreneurship.

  • Begin your introduction with an attention-grabbing experience that is evocative of your journey into the field.
  • Alternatively, you can also begin with a research problem statement that you consider exploring in your BBA Program.
  • This is because some universities directly seek a statement of purpose for BBA admission that is more of a research proposal than otherwise.

, The University of Toronto does not essentially require students to submit an SOP, but has devised a Supplementary Application Form requiring students to design their profile in a manner wherein all their previous academic and extracurricular ventures have played an important role in choosing the specialization.

Second Paragraph

In this paragraph, building on the onset of your interest in BBA specialisations, discuss relevant academic and life experiences that have augmented your curiosity in BBA. How have these experiences pivoted your interest, streamlined it, or transformed it?

  • Here, you can discuss relevant undergraduate experiences or courses in which you developed a particular interest.
  • For example, you must have developed an interest in BBA while pursuing the commerce field. An inclination towards entrepreneurship can also help draft great introductory paragraphs for this discipline.
  • Touch upon a few course specifics and how these led you to develop your portfolio and inspired you to work on projects relevant to this interest.
  • You can discuss interesting projects you have worked on or relevant co-curricular experiences worth sharing. Make sure that your experiences align with your interest in the BBA program you’re applying for.

For instance, if you are applying for a bachelor’s course in from talk about your personal experiences and previous academic ventures. Elaborate on how your extracurricular and volunteering experiences have played a role in shaping your academic interests.

Third Paragraph

Have you faced any setbacks in your academics? If you just made the cut or have lesser scores, you can mention that here.

  • Have you faced any other unique challenges or setbacks that have redefined your perspectives or interests?
  • How did you overcome these challenges and what is/are the positive outcomes of these experiences?
  • It’s essential to reflect on the lessons from these experiences to underscore your resilience.

Fourth Paragraph

You can discuss extracurriculars in this paragraph. Remember that universities are interested to know more than just academics. So, go ahead and speak about your hobbies, social work, volunteering, etc, here. You can also discuss workshops or certifications that you have taken to upgrade your skills.

However, it’s very important to not make your statement of purpose for BBA admission an embellished version of your resume.

Fifth Paragraph

If you have work experience, add it here. However, if you do not have work experience, you can discuss your internship experiences, reflecting on your specific learnings and take-aways. Identify the need and provide clarity to your decision of pursuing a Bachelor’s coursework in Business Administration.

  • How has your practical application skill influenced your career goals? Why do you wish to go for a BBA course?
  • Define your short-term and long-term goals.
  • How will the BBA program from a well-established business school help you achieve these goals?
  • How does the program align with your areas of interest?

Being a vast discipline that often requires students to choose specializations, it would be better if you justify your reasons for the choice of the school and the program. Write about the specialisation you want to pursue and why. Make an effort to understand the school's values and devise this paragraph accordingly.

Your conclusion needs to be equally engaging as your introduction.

  • What capabilities equip you to contribute to the University?
  • How can you be an asset to the University?
  • What activities, clubs, sports, student associations, groups, etc, piqued your interests?
  • What diverse experiences do you bring to your future graduate community?

Sign off with your expectations from the program and how you look forward to receiving, assimilating, and contributing to new knowledge at the university.

Common mistakes in Writing SOPs and Application Essay

SOP Requirements of Top Universities for BBA

Most universities have similar sample statement of purpose for BBA admission requirements as part of their respective applications. We’ve shortlisted a few top universities for BBA in various management specialisations and their requirements below. Let’s dive in!

University of Toronto, Canada

The University of Toronto offers the following courses: BBA in Management, BBA in Strategic Management. Offered at the Scarborough campus of the internationally recognized U of T, these BBA courses at Toronto are among the best. While applying for these courses, please take note that the university requires a Supplementary Application Form (SAF) instead of an SOP. Follow these guidelines while drafting the SAF.

  • It is a short questionnaire to review the applicants relevant skills that are required by particular programs to determine eligibility.
  • Include non-academic activity details like life experiences, leadership roles, self-assessments, and skills that you have attained through your co-curricular ventures.
  • Also, elaborate upon your academic record, including the overall admission average, performance in the prerequisite courses, and English language standardized tests.
  • A succinct narrative of your background with emphasis on clearly defined academic and career goals.
  • You must emphasise on how you are an eligible applicant for the program. You are advised to connect your learnings (academic and otherwise) with practical application and life in Canada.

2. The University of Waterloo, Canada

Similar to the admission requirements for U of T, the University of Waterloo does not require a stereotypical essay for its undergraduate students. The Admission Information Form (AIF) plays an important role in this application. The University requires the students to ‘quantify’ their extracurricular ventures. Note the following guidelines while working on the AIF.

  • The Admission Information Form is not a personal essay; it consists of short answer questions to help the admissions committee understand your profile better.
  • Focus on writing about the extracurricular activities you have undertaken and the skills you have learned from them.
  • If you took courses outside of your regular day school, why?
  • If you have had any volunteer experience previously, elucidate on that.
  • Well-rounded students are usually more successful. Thus, the university wants to know about your extracurricular interests and assess the students’ capabilities to engage and involve in the world around them.

3. Kingston University, London

Kingston University offers globally recognized BSc (Hons) courses in business administration along with various specializations like accounting and management. The university accepts candidates through the UCAS undergraduate application portal and requires a personal statement of 4000 characters and 47 lines. This statement should demonstrate the following aspects.

  • Read and understand the course description to identify the necessary qualities, skills, and experiences. Define your interest in applying to the chosen program.
  • If you have any relevant extracurricular, volunteering, or work experience, talk about how these experiences make you a suitable candidate.
  • What are the expected outcomes of the program and how do these align with or help achieve your career aspirations?
  • If any personal circumstances have affected your educational performance or influenced your decision to choose a particular program, talk about that in the essay as well.

Bachelor in Management (BSc) personal statement

How to Write a Good Personal Statement When Applying to Our Bachelor Degree Programme

The personal statement is one of the most important parts of your application to a business school. It is your opportunity to demonstrate who you are , what inspires and motivates you, and what your career aspirations are.

When applying to the Bachelor in Management (BSc) at ESCP Business School , students need to submit a personal statement in the first stage of the application process. The personal statement can include up to 1,000 words and must be written in English .

If this is your first time writing a personal statement, it can be difficult to know what to include and how to ensure that you stand out . Read on to find out how to write the perfect motivational letter.

Personal statement application for ESCP

Why ESCP Business School?

In your personal statement, you should make sure to talk about your motivation . Think carefully about what made you choose to apply to study for a Bachelor Degree in management at ESCP Business School .

Does the program’s combination of liberal arts with more traditional management courses appeal to you? Do you have global ambition and want to complete your undergraduate studies across three different cities? Are there specific aspects about business administration that appeal to you and make you want to explore the field further?

Whatever it is, write it down! In just a paragraph or two, you can transform your submission from a generic personal statement to one that is carefully tailored to the school and will stand out to the admissions department.

Focus On What Makes You Stand Out

One of the best choices you can make while writing your personal statement is to emphasize your sense of authenticity and personality, and how it makes you stand out. This can of course be a challenge since you are competing with numerous other applicants hoping to enrol in the same programme.

You can try to determine this by asking yourself some questions . What are my strongest personal qualities , and how do they enhance my sense of authenticity? How can I demonstrate this in my application? In what way do they make me into a great student and serve me as a professional? How have my life experiences shaped me as an individual?

The more you express what makes you unique as a student , and why this makes you a fantastic candidate for the programme, the more it can help your statement and application stand out from those of your peers.

Include Real-Life Examples

Every point you make in your personal statement should be backed up with real-life examples . You might have excellent time management skills , an entrepreneurial spirit , or be naturally good at building relationships . However, without examples to back them up, these statements could seem meaningless.

Try to think of experiences in your education or professional life so far that demonstrate skills that will help you during your Bachelor of Business . For example, did you balance a part-time job with studies and extracurricular activities at school? Or maybe you founded a student magazine? Or did you take the time to volunteer for a local charity or cause? Think about the things that make you different , and use your personal statement to highlight them.

What Are Your Career Aspirations After Completing Your Bachelor of Business?

Finally, it’s a good idea to include a paragraph about what you want to do after graduating from business school, and how the Bachelor in Management (BSc) will help you get there.

ESCP Business School has links to some of the world’s top employers , including KPMG , Coca-Cola , and EY , and its graduates will have the opportunity to enhance their CVs with prestigious internships and hands-on social impact projects . As well as this, the school helps students to access competitive professional opportunities with recruitment days and career fairs .

Even if you’re not completely certain of what you want to do after graduating, mentioning some of the things that you’re considering, like starting your own business or working in the financial sector , will show that you are driven and ambitious . Be honest about what you want to achieve and what interests you, and your passion should flow through the page.

Business Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

I have long been a dedicated student of the processes of business and finance. Both their  intricacies and their central place within the structure of our society have offered rewarding  avenues for potential intellectual exploration, alongside challenging opportunities for practical  application. It is this combination that has inspired me throughout school, work experience  and into undergraduate study and that will continue to ensure that I strive to achieve similar  results in future study and beyond.

From a young age I have demonstrated not only an interest in but also an aptitude for subject areas applicable to the study of business and finance management. With good grades in Business Studies at A-Level I gained an excellent grounding in the core principles of the discipline, for example, while I have also demonstrated a strong grasp of mathematics, its scientific application in Physics and Astronomy, and its financial applications in Accounting. This knowledge and experience will ensure that I am well prepared to study the complex aspects of finance at undergraduate level. I have also long been interested in the communication skills necessary to provide effective management and have worked to improve these abilities through the study of English and Media.

Having carefully planned my route into Business Studies through my school career, I have  spent the last year beginning an undergraduate course in Business Studies. While this has  afforded me a valuable opportunity to undertake undergraduate level study of management,  marketing, accounting, statistics and computing, due to personal reasons I believe that I have  not been able to achieve my full potential at my current institution. By moving to an alternative  university, with a high quality of both research and teaching, I feel sure that I can build upon  this previous study and gain the level of knowledge necessary to excel in my chosen field.

Alongside my academic interests in the field I have also gained valuable work experience that  has allowed me to witness, and to play a part in, the application of the principles I have  studied in the context of the real business world. I have a year’s work experience as an Office  Assistant at a high profile stockbroker. In addition to gaining experience of general administrative duties and liasing with clients and colleagues I also undertook date entry and company filing, allowing me first-hand experience of the administrative procedures within the industry. This experience inspired even greater enthusiasm for pursuing a role within the sector and my ultimate ambition would be to achieve an employment position within investment or corporate finance.

Outside of academia and employment I also make an effort to keep up with developments in the world of business and finance. I read both The Financial Times and The Economist on a regular basis and find that applying the academic knowledge I have learnt through education to situations I read about allows me to move beyond the theoretical and consider the practical applications. I also enjoy keeping fit and am a regular gym goer, while listening to music and watching movies are both activities that allow me opportunities for both relaxation and for socialising with friends.

I believe that I have proven myself to be a dedicated and capable student with the potential to  perform well across all aspects of the study of business and finance. Despite some personal  difficulties, I have retained a strong sense of focus and am determined to achieve my ultimate  goal of working for a prominent institution in London, the world’s financial capital. If offered the  chance to pursue further study at a prestigious university in the city, bolstered by the  enthusiasm that being surrounded by the twin worlds of business and finance will inevitably  engender, I believe that I can deliver on this promise throughout undergraduate study and  beyond.

personal statement for bba admission

25 July, 2022

Ps - ba (hons) business administration (top up) share.

  • 12 May, 2013

For the aspiring entrepreneurs and business leaders, a business management degree is consistently a popular choice. After much deliberation, I have decided to pursue BA (Hons) Business Administration (Top up) at University of Bedfordshire. This course will provide me the academic knowledge and skills to pursue global career opportunities and will develop a broad understanding of businesses. In addition, this course also features different modules which will give me the opportunity to apply my theories and ideas in practice, and this will benefit me to enhance my skills and knowledge.

Following my SSC and HSC I studied Bachelor of Business Studies degree pass course in July 2017 from National University, Bangladesh. Later on, I started working as a sales executive from July 2017. After thorough research of the job market in my country of Bangladesh, as well as abroad, I have realized that in order to reach my career goals, I need to embark on this educational journey to pursue this course. Recently, I have done a wide range of research on studying abroad. I believe studying abroad helps students to learn new languages, appreciate other cultures, overcome challenges of living in another country and gain a greater understanding of the world. In addition, these are the requirements that modern businesses look for when hiring, and such traits will only become more important in the future. Moreover, studying abroad also offers a unique opportunity to learn what we know but from a totally different perspective. These are the things which have motivated me to pursue this course in the UK institutions.

I have found from my research that this programme is designed to develop all the technical and practical skills I need to prepare myself for a successful career in business sector. The programme features a variety of assessments including coursework and examinations. I have reviewed the programme of BA (Hons) Business Administration (Top up) at the University of Bedfordshire and found some modules that are designed to test subject knowledge and understanding of the appropriate subject matter, but also to demonstrate the range of intellectual and subject specific skills identified elsewhere in this document. Through research, I will get opportunities to demonstrate that understanding of the theory and will have developed critical thinking skills which help me to evaluate the relevance of what has been learned. The course modules have been designed to help me to develop and demonstrate the skills that are essential to effective communication in business settings and to allow for progress through the course such as Management and Administration of Projects and Operations, New Advancements in Business, Strategic Management for Business, Business Finance, Global Marketing Strategy. And all these modules will help me to broaden my knowledge of business management systems on a professional level. After completion of my course, I want to be a Business Developer or Business Analyst, and this course will put me in a favourable position in terms of the business and management field. I believe this course will be the right choice for my career plans and objectives.

I am determined to study this course in the UK as the study environment in my country is quite different and we only have the opportunity to study with local students. Furthermore, due to periods of unexpected political unrest, students often struggle to finish their degrees on time. Conversely, the UK has a great multicultural and diversified student community which is an opportunity for me to learn with lot of students from different nationalities. UK education brand is highly respected by employers in our country as UK degree prepare graduates with academic competencies, developed personal and professional skills that are imperative for organizational success. The transferrable skills graduates carry forward from UK are pivotal for transforming organizational growth and gain competitive advantages. This is also a reason to study again in UK. In a recent Survey of International Graduate Outcomes 2019 by Universities UK International produced by iGraduate shows that 82% international graduates say that their UK degree are worth the financial investment and same percentage say they are satisfied or very satisfied with their careers. Nearly 83% feel that UK degree has helped them to get jobs. These aspects have driven my ambition to gain the degree from a UK institution. For this reason, I have decided to pursue this course in the UK.

The University of Bedfordshire is a modern, innovative university with a heritage of top-quality education. With over 22,000 students, we provide outstanding higher education to people from all backgrounds and from over 120 countries, with a significant proportion of mature students and a growing international postgraduate community. In addition, University of Bedfordshire has great industry links with more than 3,000 companies to provide a broad range of training and accredited professional courses for industry employers, including, BT, Sky, Boots, IBM, and the NHS, while the university educates professionals from 90% of FTSE 100 companies. Moreover, University of Bedfordshire career support services help students build a successful career after graduation. This University brings workplace into classrooms so it will be beneficial for me to attain my personal career objectives by practicing in this type of learning environment. I will look no further if I get this chance to study this course at University of Bedfordshire.

Gre prep online guides and tips, 3 successful graduate school personal statement examples.

personal statement for bba admission

Looking for grad school personal statement examples? Look no further! In this total guide to graduate school personal statement examples, we’ll discuss why you need a personal statement for grad school and what makes a good one. Then we’ll provide three graduate school personal statement samples from our grad school experts. After that, we’ll do a deep dive on one of our personal statement for graduate school examples. Finally, we’ll wrap up with a list of other grad school personal statements you can find online.

Why Do You Need a Personal Statement?

A personal statement is a chance for admissions committees to get to know you: your goals and passions, what you’ll bring to the program, and what you’re hoping to get out of the program.  You need to sell the admissions committee on what makes you a worthwhile applicant. The personal statement is a good chance to highlight significant things about you that don’t appear elsewhere on your application.

A personal statement is slightly different from a statement of purpose (also known as a letter of intent). A statement of purpose/letter of intent tends to be more tightly focused on your academic or professional credentials and your future research and/or professional interests.

While a personal statement also addresses your academic experiences and goals, you have more leeway to be a little more, well, personal. In a personal statement, it’s often appropriate to include information on significant life experiences or challenges that aren’t necessarily directly relevant to your field of interest.

Some programs ask for both a personal statement and a statement of purpose/letter of intent. In this case, the personal statement is likely to be much more tightly focused on your life experience and personality assets while the statement of purpose will focus in much more on your academic/research experiences and goals.

However, there’s not always a hard-and-fast demarcation between a personal statement and a statement of purpose. The two statement types should address a lot of the same themes, especially as relates to your future goals and the valuable assets you bring to the program. Some programs will ask for a personal statement but the prompt will be focused primarily on your research and professional experiences and interests. Some will ask for a statement of purpose but the prompt will be more focused on your general life experiences.

When in doubt, give the program what they are asking for in the prompt and don’t get too hung up on whether they call it a personal statement or statement of purpose. You can always call the admissions office to get more clarification on what they want you to address in your admissions essay.

Quick side note: we've created the world's leading online GRE prep program that adapts to you and your strengths and weaknesses. Not sure what to study? Confused by how to improve your score? We give you minute by minute guide.

What Makes a Good Grad School Personal Statement?

A great graduate school personal statement can come in many forms and styles. However, strong grad school personal statement examples all share the same following elements:

A Clear Narrative

Above all, a good personal statement communicates clear messages about what makes you a strong applicant who is likely to have success in graduate school. So to that extent, think about a couple of key points that you want to communicate about yourself and then drill down on how you can best communicate those points. (Your key points should of course be related to what you can bring to the field and to the program specifically).

You can also decide whether to address things like setbacks or gaps in your application as part of your narrative. Have a low GPA for a couple semesters due to a health issue? Been out of a job for a while taking care of a family member? If you do decide to explain an issue like this, make sure that the overall arc is more about demonstrating positive qualities like resilience and diligence than about providing excuses.

Specific Examples

A great statement of purpose uses specific examples to illustrate its key messages. This can include anecdotes that demonstrate particular traits or even references to scholars and works that have influenced your academic trajectory to show that you are familiar and insightful about the relevant literature in your field.

Just saying “I love plants,” is pretty vague. Describing how you worked in a plant lab during undergrad and then went home and carefully cultivated your own greenhouse where you cross-bred new flower colors by hand is much more specific and vivid, which makes for better evidence.

A strong personal statement will describe why you are a good fit for the program, and why the program is a good fit for you. It’s important to identify specific things about the program that appeal to you, and how you’ll take advantage of those opportunities. It’s also a good idea to talk about specific professors you might be interested in working with. This shows that you are informed about and genuinely invested in the program.

Strong Writing

Even quantitative and science disciplines typically require some writing, so it’s important that your personal statement shows strong writing skills. Make sure that you are communicating clearly and that you don’t have any grammar and spelling errors. It’s helpful to get other people to read your statement and provide feedback. Plan on going through multiple drafts.

Another important thing here is to avoid cliches and gimmicks. Don’t deploy overused phrases and openings like “ever since I was a child.” Don’t structure your statement in a gimmicky way (i.e., writing a faux legal brief about yourself for a law school statement of purpose). The first will make your writing banal; the second is likely to make you stand out in a bad way.

Appropriate Boundaries

While you can be more personal in a personal statement than in a statement of purpose, it’s important to maintain appropriate boundaries in your writing. Don’t overshare anything too personal about relationships, bodily functions, or illegal activities. Similarly, don’t share anything that makes it seem like you may be out of control, unstable, or an otherwise risky investment. The personal statement is not a confessional booth. If you share inappropriately, you may seem like you have bad judgment, which is a huge red flag to admissions committees.

You should also be careful with how you deploy humor and jokes. Your statement doesn’t have to be totally joyless and serious, but bear in mind that the person reading the statement may not have the same sense of humor as you do. When in doubt, err towards the side of being as inoffensive as possible.

Just as being too intimate in your statement can hurt you, it’s also important not to be overly formal or staid. You should be professional, but conversational.

Graduate School Personal Statement Examples

Our graduate school experts have been kind enough to provide some successful grad school personal statement examples. We’ll provide three examples here, along with brief analysis of what makes each one successful.

Sample Personal Statement for Graduate School 1

PDF of Sample Personal Statement 1 – Japanese Studies

For this Japanese Studies master’s degree, the applicant had to provide a statement of purpose outlining her academic goals and experience with Japanese and a separate personal statement describing her personal relationship with Japanese Studies and what led her to pursue a master’s degree.

Here’s what’s successful about this personal statement:

  • An attention-grabbing beginning: The applicant begins with the statement that Japanese has never come easily to her and that it’s a brutal language to learn. Seeing as how this is an application for a Japanese Studies program, this is an intriguing beginning that makes the reader want to keep going.
  • A compelling narrative: From this attention-grabbing beginning, the applicant builds a well-structured and dramatic narrative tracking her engagement with the Japanese language over time. The clear turning point is her experience studying abroad, leading to a resolution in which she has clarity about her plans. Seeing as how the applicant wants to be a translator of Japanese literature, the tight narrative structure here is a great way to show her writing skills.
  • Specific examples that show important traits: The applicant clearly communicates both a deep passion for Japanese through examples of her continued engagement with Japanese and her determination and work ethic by highlighting the challenges she’s faced (and overcome) in her study of the language. This gives the impression that she is an engaged and dedicated student.

Overall, this is a very strong statement both in terms of style and content. It flows well, is memorable, and communicates that the applicant would make the most of the graduate school experience.

Sample Personal Statement for Graduate School 2

PDF of Sample Graduate School Personal Statement 2 – Musical Composition

This personal statement for a Music Composition master’s degree discusses the factors that motivate the applicant to pursue graduate study.

Here’s what works well in this statement:

  • The applicant provides two clear reasons motivating the student to pursue graduate study: her experiences with music growing up, and her family’s musical history. She then supports those two reasons with examples and analysis.
  • The description of her ancestors’ engagement with music is very compelling and memorable. The applicant paints her own involvement with music as almost inevitable based on her family’s long history with musical pursuits.
  • The applicant gives thoughtful analysis of the advantages she has been afforded that have allowed her to study music so extensively. We get the sense that she is insightful and empathetic—qualities that would add greatly to any academic community.

This is a strong, serviceable personal statement. And in truth, given that this for a masters in music composition, other elements of the application (like work samples) are probably the most important.  However, here are two small changes I would make to improve it:

  • I would probably to split the massive second paragraph into 2-3 separate paragraphs. I might use one paragraph to orient the reader to the family’s musical history, one paragraph to discuss Giacomo and Antonio, and one paragraph to discuss how the family has influenced the applicant. As it stands, it’s a little unwieldy and the second paragraph doesn’t have a super-clear focus even though it’s all loosely related to the applicant’s family history with music.
  • I would also slightly shorten the anecdote about the applicant’s ancestors and expand more on how this family history has motivated the applicant’s interest in music. In what specific ways has her ancestors’ perseverance inspired her? Did she think about them during hard practice sessions? Is she interested in composing music in a style they might have played? More specific examples here would lend greater depth and clarity to the statement.

PDF of Sample Graduate School Personal Statement 3 – Public Health

This is my successful personal statement for Columbia’s Master’s program in Public Health. We’ll do a deep dive on this statement paragraph-by-paragraph in the next section, but I’ll highlight a couple of things that work in this statement here:

  • This statement is clearly organized. Almost every paragraph has a distinct focus and message, and when I move on to a new idea, I move on to a new paragraph with a logical transitions.
  • This statement covers a lot of ground in a pretty short space. I discuss my family history, my goals, my educational background, and my professional background. But because the paragraphs are organized and I use specific examples, it doesn’t feel too vague or scattered.
  • In addition to including information about my personal motivations, like my family, I also include some analysis about tailoring health interventions with my example of the Zande. This is a good way to show off what kinds of insights I might bring to the program based on my academic background.

Grad School Personal Statement Example: Deep Dive

Now let’s do a deep dive, paragraph-by-paragraph, on one of these sample graduate school personal statements. We’ll use my personal statement that I used when I applied to Columbia’s public health program.

Paragraph One: For twenty-three years, my grandmother (a Veterinarian and an Epidemiologist) ran the Communicable Disease Department of a mid-sized urban public health department. The stories of Grandma Betty doggedly tracking down the named sexual partners of the infected are part of our family lore. Grandma Betty would persuade people to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases, encourage safer sexual practices, document the spread of infection and strive to contain and prevent it. Indeed, due to the large gay population in the city where she worked, Grandma Betty was at the forefront of the AIDS crises, and her analysis contributed greatly towards understanding how the disease was contracted and spread. My grandmother has always been a huge inspiration to me, and the reason why a career in public health was always on my radar.

This is an attention-grabbing opening anecdote that avoids most of the usual cliches about childhood dreams and proclivities. This story also subtly shows that I have a sense of public health history, given the significance of the AIDs crisis for public health as a field.

It’s good that I connect this family history to my own interests. However, if I were to revise this paragraph again, I might cut down on some of the detail because when it comes down to it, this story isn’t really about me. It’s important that even (sparingly used) anecdotes about other people ultimately reveal something about you in a personal statement.

Paragraph Two: Recent years have cemented that interest. In January 2012, my parents adopted my little brother Fred from China. Doctors in America subsequently diagnosed Fred with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). My parents were told that if Fred’s condition had been discovered in China, the (very poor) orphanage in which he spent the first 8+ years of his life would have recognized his DMD as a death sentence and denied him sustenance to hasten his demise.

Here’s another compelling anecdote to help explain my interest in public health. This is an appropriately personal detail for a personal statement—it’s a serious thing about my immediate family, but it doesn’t disclose anything that the admissions committee might find concerning or inappropriate.

If I were to take another pass through this paragraph, the main thing I would change is the last phrase. “Denied him sustenance to hasten his demise” is a little flowery. “Denied him food to hasten his death” is actually more powerful because it’s clearer and more direct.

Paragraph Three: It is not right that some people have access to the best doctors and treatment while others have no medical care. I want to pursue an MPH in Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia because studying social factors in health, with a particular focus on socio-health inequities, will prepare me to address these inequities. The interdisciplinary approach of the program appeals to me greatly as I believe interdisciplinary approaches are the most effective way to develop meaningful solutions to complex problems.

In this paragraph I make a neat and clear transition from discussing what sparked my interest in public health and health equity to what I am interested in about Columbia specifically: the interdisciplinary focus of the program, and how that focus will prepare me to solve complex health problems. This paragraph also serves as a good pivot point to start discussing my academic and professional background.

Paragraph Four: My undergraduate education has prepared me well for my chosen career. Understanding the underlying structure of a group’s culture is essential to successfully communicating with the group. In studying folklore and mythology, I’ve learned how to parse the unspoken structures of folk groups, and how those structures can be used to build bridges of understanding. For example, in a culture where most illnesses are believed to be caused by witchcraft, as is the case for the Zande people of central Africa, any successful health intervention or education program would of necessity take into account their very real belief in witchcraft.

In this paragraph, I link my undergraduate education and the skills I learned there to public health. The (very brief) analysis of tailoring health interventions to the Zande is a good way to show insight and show off the competencies I would bring to the program.

Paragraph Five: I now work in the healthcare industry for one of the largest providers of health benefits in the world. In addition to reigniting my passion for data and quantitative analytics, working for this company has immersed me in the business side of healthcare, a critical component of public health.

This brief paragraph highlights my relevant work experience in the healthcare industry. It also allows me to mention my work with data and quantitative analytics, which isn’t necessarily obvious from my academic background, which was primarily based in the social sciences.

Paragraph Six: I intend to pursue a PhD in order to become an expert in how social factors affect health, particularly as related to gender and sexuality. I intend to pursue a certificate in Sexuality, Sexual Health, and Reproduction. Working together with other experts to create effective interventions across cultures and societies, I want to help transform health landscapes both in America and abroad.

This final paragraph is about my future plans and intentions. Unfortunately, it’s a little disjointed, primarily because I discuss goals of pursuing a PhD before I talk about what certificate I want to pursue within the MPH program! Switching those two sentences and discussing my certificate goals within the MPH and then mentioning my PhD plans would make a lot more sense.

I also start two sentences in a row with “I intend,” which is repetitive.

The final sentence is a little bit generic; I might tailor it to specifically discuss a gender and sexual health issue, since that is the primary area of interest I’ve identified.

This was a successful personal statement; I got into (and attended!) the program. It has strong examples, clear organization, and outlines what interests me about the program (its interdisciplinary focus) and what competencies I would bring (a background in cultural analysis and experience with the business side of healthcare). However, a few slight tweaks would elevate this statement to the next level.

Graduate School Personal Statement Examples You Can Find Online

So you need more samples for your personal statement for graduate school? Examples are everywhere on the internet, but they aren’t all of equal quality.

Most of examples are posted as part of writing guides published online by educational institutions. We’ve rounded up some of the best ones here if you are looking for more personal statement examples for graduate school.

Penn State Personal Statement Examples for Graduate School

This selection of ten short personal statements for graduate school and fellowship programs offers an interesting mix of approaches. Some focus more on personal adversity while others focus more closely on professional work within the field.

The writing in some of these statements is a little dry, and most deploy at least a few cliches. However, these are generally strong, serviceable statements that communicate clearly why the student is interested in the field, their skills and competencies, and what about the specific program appeals to them.

Cal State Sample Graduate School Personal Statements

These are good examples of personal statements for graduate school where students deploy lots of very vivid imagery and illustrative anecdotes of life experiences. There are also helpful comments about what works in each of these essays.

However, all of these statements are definitely pushing the boundaries of acceptable length, as all are above 1000 and one is almost 1500 words! Many programs limit you to 500 words; if you don’t have a limit, you should try to keep it to two single-spaced pages at most (which is about 1000 words).

University of Chicago Personal Statement for Graduate School Examples

These examples of successful essays to the University of Chicago law school cover a wide range of life experiences and topics. The writing in all is very vivid, and all communicate clear messages about the students’ strengths and competencies.

Note, however, that these are all essays that specifically worked for University of Chicago law school. That does not mean that they would work everywhere. In fact, one major thing to note is that many of these responses, while well-written and vivid, barely address the students’ interest in law school at all! This is something that might not work well for most graduate programs.

Wheaton College Personal Statement for Graduate School Sample 10

This successful essay for law school from a Wheaton College undergraduate does a great job tracking the student’s interest in the law in a compelling and personal way. Wheaton offers other graduate school personal statement examples, but this one offers the most persuasive case for the students’ competencies. The student accomplishes this by using clear, well-elaborated examples, showing strong and vivid writing, and highlighting positive qualities like an interest in justice and empathy without seeming grandiose or out of touch.

Wheaton College Personal Statement for Graduate School Sample 1

Based on the background information provided at the bottom of the essay, this essay was apparently successful for this applicant. However, I’ve actually included this essay because it demonstrates an extremely risky approach. While this personal statement is strikingly written and the story is very memorable, it could definitely communicate the wrong message to some admissions committees. The student’s decision not to report the drill sergeant may read incredibly poorly to some admissions committees. They may wonder if the student’s failure to report the sergeant’s violence will ultimately expose more soldiers-in-training to the same kinds of abuses. This incident perhaps reads especially poorly in light of the fact that the military has such a notable problem with violence against women being covered up and otherwise mishandled

It’s actually hard to get a complete picture of the student’s true motivations from this essay, and what we have might raise real questions about the student’s character to some admissions committees. This student took a risk and it paid off, but it could have just as easily backfired spectacularly.

Key Takeaways: Graduate School Personal Statement Examples

In this guide, we discussed why you need a personal statement and how it differs from a statement of purpose. (It’s more personal!)

We also discussed what you’ll find in a strong sample personal statement for graduate school:

  • A clear narrative about the applicant and why they are qualified for graduate study.
  • Specific examples to support that narrative.
  • Compelling reasons why the applicant and the program are a good fit for each other.
  • Strong writing, including clear organization and error-free, cliche-free language.

5 Ivy-level Personal Statement Examples [Updated 2023]

personal statement for bba admission

Here, we have 5 high quality   Personal Statement essay examples  from my students over the years. Great Common App Personal Statements tend to give a glimpse into each student’s life, thought processes, growth, and maturity.

Another trend that you may notice with these essay examples is that they’re not entirely CAREER or ACADEMIC based. It depends on the vibe you’re going for, but the general rule of thumb is to think about these essays from the perspective of the admissions officer.

In other words, it’s NOT as simple as “showing off your personality” in personal statement. You might hear this or read this somewhere, but, seriously, don’t listen to it. Your personality will not get you into a top school (unless you’re trying to hustle your way into a party when you’re not on the guest list, then that’s different.)

Think about it rationally: An admissions officer’s JOB is to assemble a cohort of great students into his/her university. Upon reading each application, an admissions professional is thinking: “How will this student contribute to our school? What will this person bring to the table?”

So, your personal statement needs to help answer that question.

Note: O fficial Common App Personal Statement Prompts are posted here.

Remember, the word count is 650 words! And, just an FYI — titles for college app essays are completely unnecessary. I just included them in this post to refer to them more easily.

Hey guys this is my Personal statement to HKUST your thoughts and input Are much appreciated.

Matt Bradley

I have always been immersed in the world of business. From watching my uncles buy an ownership stake in a multi-million dollar excavation company to store tours with my father, a highly regarded district manager for Dollerama. I am surrounded by inspiration from my family and the people around me. It is now my turn to advance to university and continue a family legacy of business.

Immediately following high school I had an idea that I wanted to progress into business but was to immature to turn my dreams into a reality. Although inexperienced and under qualified I applied for a management level position at Frito Lay Canada. During the final part of the interview I was asked why I should be hired. I replied “ I know I’m young and under qualified, but I also know that I can do this job and I’m just asking you to give me the opportunity to prove it to you.” I am now one of the youngest full time sales representatives in Canada. I have sold a variety of over 150 products in more than 50 cities and towns throughout Saskatchewan. I have experience in areas such as short term sales forecasting, marketing, inventory and auditing procedures as well as the ordering and sales of product, all of these aspects while creating and maintaining relationships with customers. Well, I have limited experience in this area like yourself. I will provide what I have learned scanning threads on these forums and elsewhere.

It's rough right out of the gate. Just throwing it out there that your uncle is some kind of business big shot is not a good idea IMHO. I wreaks of self-importance and arrogance. This is the silver-bullet of death for any SoP. Plus, it's an anecdotal start, which most people advise against. And, it's not even one that demonstrates how you are a strong candidate for the program. What did you learn through these experiences?

Same thing for your achievement as a sales rep. You drop in there like it speaks for itself - that you have cred. Tell them what you learned. Don't get me wrong, I think that your experience at Frito-Lay is a really strong selling point for you as a candidate. Don't tell them what you did. Tell them what's in your repertoire, what's in your bag, what skills you have and how you acquired them. More importantly, tell them how they make you equipped to do what you want to do in grad school.

I agree with the above poster; there's not enough information about how your family inspired you to continue, just that they were inspiring because they are successful business people. Although I'm not familiar with your school's requirements, the paragraph about your personal qualities is a little...odd. If it's not part of the requirements for applying, I'd leave that part out.

In addition, grammatically speaking, you've got quite a few run-on sentences that could use some commas, at the very least, the second sentence is actually a fragment, and there are some awkward phrasings throughout.

Business Administration personal statement (Masters)

In this statement I plan like to introduce myself and express why I would like to apply for the Business Administration master degree program at Southern States University and what I have in mind for my future.

I earned my Bachelor’s in Business Administration at Istanbul Bilgi University. Istanbul Bilgi University is part of the Laureate international network and is one of the biggest and most prestigious universities in Istanbul/Turkey. My undergraduate education has developed my skills within business administration but I strongly believe continuing my studies at Southern States University will positively impact my future career.

My education at Bilgi University started in September 2011. Throughout my university life I have stayed active on campus, joining student clubs and networking at school events. In addition to this I have worked every summer to define my interests and decide about my future career. My first year at Bilgi University was dedicated to learning English. Following that, two years later I went to an extension program at the University of California, Irvine in order to further improve my English language skills. This was my first experience away from home and while I was nervous at first being on my own pushed me to become reliant on my own language skills. At the end of 2013, I worked in the CRM department as a full-time customer representative at Istanbul Bilgi University. This job really aided me in my human relations and crisis management skills. In my third year at Bilgi I worked as a human resources intern for Demsa Group Company, which distributes luxury brands such as Michael Kors, Gucci and Alexander McQueen in Turkey. My work at Demsa taught me inter-corporate relations, I was able to meet people from different cultures and this expanded my perspectives. All these experiences and the undergraduate courses I took at Bilgi University have broadened my horizons and helped me my passion about communication. After my graduation in August 2016, I applied for the Google Summer School in Turkey to learn Google Adwords and search engine optimization. I got my certifications in August 2016. I believe this was a big factor in my getting hired at Muratbey Gıda in Turkey, where I still work now as a business development and communications assistant. Working at this international company that has made revolutions in cheese production with its unique products, systems and patented production technologies globally has been very inspiring. Muratbey has taught me how to combine my educational background and my personal abilities to create value for the company.

One of my favorite memories at Bilgi University involves the day I volunteered for a social responsibility project titled ‘Time for Children’. The purpose of this program is to have children gain a better understanding of their peers and includes children in the 5th, 6th and 7th grades. I helped design the activities and directed children to play. This task improved my problem-solving abilities and taught me how prepare a business plan. With these abilities, I entered entrepreneurship contests with my projects and met with creative people, who love to spend time to find what people need and how can fix any existing problem like I do. At the beginning of my third semester at Bilgi I started a student club titled ‘Bilgili Liderler Club’ with my nine friends. I was responsible for the event department. I managed twelve events in a year such as carrier and branding meeting, entrepreneurship chat, office visit, meeting with Microsoft. Also, I prepared a party as a social responsibility project to get fund for autistic children in Christmas. I managed all communication process of the club and events from start to end. It improved me on management and human relations.

I am a self-starter, self-confident, hardworking and distinguished person through my education and very active in my social life as well with sports, excursions and other activities. I played volleyball and tennis in high school and realized during this time that sports take a great part in developing team spirit and human relations. These are two very important factors required to be successful in business. I do not think that I would encounter difficulties in foreign environments since I have a personal constitution focused on solutions. I am able to overcome difficulties easily with the help of my good human relations, my high convincing ability and my adaptability.

To achieve my career goals, I need to learn much more about corporate management and management techniques on an international level. A Master’s Degree will provide me with theoretical understanding, in depth idea of practical approaches in aiding managerial decision-making and research skills to enable me to develop an expertise in the core areas of business strategies and global corporate business operations. Master of Business Administration is ideally suited for my career plans and will be golden opportunity to help me to reach them. I believe that my undergraduate study at Istanbul Bilgi University and my proposed postgraduate study at Southern States University will complement each other perfectly for my future prospects. I also believe that the curriculum offered at Southern States University’s MBA program will not only help me to achieve my goals but also will help me to understand the world more than anything else. As Abraham Lincoln once said: “I will study and get ready, and perhaps my chance will come.” I understand that one should do everything he has to do and be prepared in order to reach his aims no matter how many times he fails achieving his objectives. That is why I will keep trying until I meet my goals. I do not want to limit myself within the borders of my country or any other countries, and I want to seize every opportunity I have. Therefore, I not only want to study in USA, but I also hope to work there for about one year after graduation to experience its business environment. In this way, Southern States University would not only provide me with the academic background for launching my career, but also act as the gateway or steppingstone into the next phase of my profession.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that road to success in business life will appear vividly in my mind after attending to seminars and lectures of MBA at Southern States University. The fact that the courses I will take in your program will support my personal development and enlighten my career at the business world, sprinkles seeds of enthusiasm in me.

I look forward to be a part of the student community at Southern States University.

International business management personal statement example 1.

"Look at the labels on the clothes you are wearing." My sociology teacher started by allowing us to appreciate the work that went into producing our clothes, emphasising the journey each item underwent before arriving in that classroom.

Studying globalisation as part of Sociology has provided me with an awareness of the challenges and demands of a global business. Living in the Philippines, Northern Ireland and England fuelled my passion for other cultures and languages. Both factors contributed to my interest in the business sector and becoming the Marketing Director of a Young Enterprise company cemented my decision in studying International Business at university.

My role as Marketing Director was challenging, as it required me to form strategies that captured our target market and increased sales. I learnt that the skill to manage people efficiently is key to being productive in any business; I had to prioritise and delegate tasks to other team members. By liaising with manufacturers and suppliers, I learned how to conduct business transactions effectively as carrying out smooth transactions encourages repeat-business in the long run. Delivering presentations during two rounds of the Young Enterprise competition boosted my confidence in public speaking. Our company won best presentation at the area and county finals, as well as an award for a short advertisement, which I planned, filmed and edited.

I have been working in Superdry for nearly a year, initially part-time as a student, where I experience how an international retailer operates both front and back of house. I built good working relationships with my colleagues and am able to relate to customers. This summer I became the youngest finalist, out of one hundred and fifty applicants, to become a student event brand ambassador for Superdry. I was invited to their flagship store for an interview to talk about my proposed marketing campaign; I was highly commended for my presentation. I am now involved with the organising and promoting of the Superdry Reading student event.

I am fluent in English and Tagalog, I study Spanish and intend to learn Mandarin; increasing globalisation means the ability to communicate with and relate to foreign customers is important. As a keen traveller, I notice how transnational corporations alter their products to compliment the culture of the host country, for example in India all McDonald's restaurants are certified halal. The sales and marketing strategies used are also specific to the country's social needs; I saw this last summer when I was fortunate enough to work-shadow a senior sales manager at da Land in the Philippines.

In my free time I enjoy music; I attained a grade 8 in singing and a grade 4 in piano. I taught myself how to play the ukulele and during sixth form I joined a ukulele orchestra. In my gap year I plan to teach English at a primary school in China. I hope to discover more about the Chinese culture whilst developing my creativity as I organise educational activities for the students. My dynamic personality and good work ethic makes me suitable for a constantly evolving business world and in studying International Business I will gain the necessary skills to analyse and excel in these changing conditions.

I look forward to the opportunity to study abroad as part of my degree at university; I am particularly eager to expand my knowledge in the areas of Marketing, Finance and Business Sustainability as I find these areas fascinating. I understand the importance of business responsibilities, and aspire to become part of an organisation that puts corporate social responsibility at the heart of their operations.

Im quite proud of my personal statement actually, in total, it took me about a week to put finish after 8 drafts and numerous breakdowns! Hackers may have stolen your Social Security number in a massive breach. Here's what to know.

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: August 19, 2024 / 9:51 AM EDT / CBS News

A new lawsuit is claiming hackers have gained access to the personal information of "billions of individuals," including their Social Security numbers, current and past addresses and the names of siblings and parents — personal data that could allow fraudsters to infiltrate financial accounts or take out loans in their names.

The allegation arose in a lawsuit filed earlier this month by Christopher Hofmann, a California resident who claims his identity theft protection service alerted him that his personal information had been leaked to the dark web by the "nationalpublicdata.com" breach. The lawsuit was earlier reported by Bloomberg Law.

The breach allegedly occurred around April 2024, with a hacker group called USDoD exfiltrating the unencrypted personal information of billions of individuals from a company called National Public Data (NPD), a background check company, according to the lawsuit. Earlier this month, a hacker leaked a version of the stolen NPD data for free on a hacking forum, tech site Bleeping Computer reported .

That hacker claimed the stolen files include 2.7 billion records, with each listing a person's full name, address, date of birth, Social Security number and phone number, Bleeping Computer said. While it's unclear how many people that includes, it's likely "that everyone with a Social Security number was impacted," said Cliff Steinhauer, director of information security and engagement at The National Cybersecurity Alliance, a nonprofit that promotes online safety.

"It's a reminder of the importance of protecting yourself, because clearly companies and the government aren't doing it for us," Steinhauer told CBS MoneyWatch.

In a statement posted to its website, NPD said the breach involved a "third-party bad actor that was trying to hack into data in late December 2023, with potential leaks of certain data in April 2024 and summer 2024."

The company added that it is working with law enforcement and government investigators. NPD said it "will try to notify you if there are further significant developments applicable to you."

Here's what to know about the alleged hack.

What is National Public Data?

National Public Data is a data company based in Coral Springs, Florida, that provides background checks for employers, investigators and other businesses that want to check people's backgrounds. Its searches include criminal records, vital records, SSN traces and more information, its website says.

There are many similar companies that scrape public data to create files on consumers, which they then sell to other businesses, Steinhauer said.

"They are data brokers that collect and sell data about people, sometimes for background check purposes," he said. "It's because there's no national privacy law in the U.S. — there is no law against them collecting this data against our consent."

What happened with the USDoD hack?

According to the new lawsuit, USDoD on April 8 posted a database called "National Public Data" on the dark web, claiming to have records for about 2.9 billion individuals. It was asking for a purchase price of $3.5 million, the lawsuit claims.

However, Bleeping Computer reported that the file was later leaked for free on a hacker forum, as noted above.

How many people have been impacted?

The number of people impacted by the breach is unclear. Although the lawsuit claims "billions of individuals" had their data stolen, the total population of the U.S. stands at about 330 million. The lawsuit also alleges that the data includes personal information of deceased individuals.

Bleeping Computer reports that the hacked data involves 2.7 billion records, with individuals having multiple records in the database. In other words, one individual could have separate records for each address where they've lived, which means the number of impacted people may be far lower than the lawsuit claims, the site noted.

The data may reach back at least three decades, according to law firm Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe, which said on Monday it is investigating the breach.

Did NPD alert individuals about the hack?

It's unclear, although the lawsuit claims that NPD "has still not provided any notice or warning" to Hoffman or other people affected by the breach.

"In fact, upon information and belief, the vast majority of Class Members were unaware that their sensitive [personal information] had been compromised, and that they were, and continue to be, at significant risk of identity theft and various other forms of personal, social, and financial harm," the lawsuit claims.

Information security company McAfee reported that it hasn't found any filings with state attorneys general. Some states require companies that have experienced data breaches to file reports with their AG offices.

However, NPD posted an alert about the breach on its website, stating that it believes the information breached includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers and mailing addresses.

Can you find out if your data was part of the hack?

There are tools available that will monitor what information about you is available on the dark web, noted Michael Blair, managing director of cybersecurity firm NukuDo. Commonly breached data includes your personal addresses, passwords and email, he added.

One such service is how Hofmann, who filed the lawsuit, found out that his information has been leaked as part of NPD breach.

"Make sure to use reputable companies to look that up," Blair said.

What should I do to protect my information?

Security experts recommend that consumers put freezes on their credit files at the three big credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Freezing your credit is free, and will stop bad actors from taking out loans or opening credit cards in your name.

"The biggest thing is to freeze your credit report, so it can't be used to open new accounts in your name and commit other fraud in your name," Steinhauer said.

In its statement, NPD also urged people to put free fraud alerts on their accounts, which "tells creditors to contact you before they open any new accounts or change your existing accounts," it said. You'll have to contact just one of the three credit bureaus to create a fraud alert, and that agency will alert the others.

Steinhauer recommends consumers take several additional steps to protect their data and finances:

  • Make sure your passwords are at least 16 characters in length, and are complex.
  • Use a password manager to save those long, complex passwords.
  • Enable multifactor authentication, which Steinhauer calls "critical," because simply using a single password to access your accounts isn't enough protection against hackers.
  • Be on alert for phishing and other scams. One red flag is that the scammers will try to create a sense of urgency to manipulate their victims.
  • Keep your security software updated on your computer and other devices. For instance, make sure you download the latest security updates from Microsoft or Apple onto your apps and devices.

You can also get a tracking service that will alert you if your data appears on the dark web.

"You should assume you have been compromised and act accordingly," Steinhauer said.
