My Book My Inspiration Essay 500 words

Books have always been an integral part of my life, serving as portals to new worlds and inspiration for personal growth. Among the countless books I have read in the past few years, one book stands out as a profound source of enduring wisdom and motivation. The book that holds a special place in my heart is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. From the moment I turned its first few pages, I was spellbound by the narrative  and the wisdom embedded in the book. It has profoundly shaped my worldview and inspired me to strive for a more just and compassionate society.

From the moment I first opened its pages, "To Kill a Mockingbird" captivated me with the way it has maintained its captivating storytelling while exploring complex themes such as racial injustice, moral courage, and the power of empathy. At the heart of the story lies the unforgettable and most remarkable character of Atticus Finch, a lawyer who defends an innocent black man, Tom Robinson, against a charge of rape in the deeply segregated Alabama community. Through Atticus's unwavering commitment to justice and his unwavering belief in the inherent goodness of humanity, I was inspired to confront my own biases and to stand up for what is right, even in the face of adversity.

One of the most profound lessons I learned from "To Kill a Mockingbird" is the importance of empathy and understanding. Through the eyes of the character Scout Finch, a young girl growing up in the turbulent 1930s, I gained a deeper appreciation for the challenges faced by marginalised communities and the need to bridge the divides that separate us. Scout's innocence and her willingness to challenge societal norms taught me to question preconceived notions and to seek out the truth, even if it is uncomfortable or inconvenient.

The book's enduring message of hope and resilience has also been a source of inspiration in my own life. Atticus's unwavering belief in the power of education and his determination to instil in his children a sense of justice and compassion have resonated deeply with me. His unwavering commitment to his principles, even in the face of overwhelming opposition, has served as a guiding light for me in my own pursuit of personal integrity and social justice.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee has been more than just a book to me. To me, it is a testament to the power of literature to inspire, challenge, and transform. It has shaped my understanding of the world, ignited my passion for social justice, and instilled in me the courage to stand up for what I believe in. As I will move ahead in life, navigating the complexities of daily chores, personal and professional life, I know that the lessons I learned from Atticus Finch and the unique characters of "To Kill a Mockingbird" will continue to guide me, reminding me to always strive for a better world.

My Inspiration for Reading Essay

Introduction.

Every time I walk into the library and pick out yet another great book, I cannot help but remember how it all started. When I was young I loved books mostly because of their beautiful illustrations. I would often pick a book and admire its beautiful pictures of animals, children, landscapes, and the like. My parents noticed my love of books and they would often pick the most colored one for me. All this changed when my aunt Cate moved in with us when I was about five and a half years old.

At that time aunt Cate had just finished her degree in early childhood development. Her dream then was to be a children’s book writer. It was my aunt who revealed the other side of books to me. Previously my mom would pick a book and explain all the pictures and illustrations in it. My aunt on the other hand loved reading to me. She would passionately read to me and the experience was unforgettable. I still believe my aunt Cate is solely responsible for my love of books and the English language in general.

Every night my aunt would walk into my room with a book in her hands, my world would come alive. She would narrate the story I had always wanted to know through the illustrations in those books. She would often smile every time I told her “read the one with the wolf and the girl”. Then she would passively remark, “But I read it just a few weeks ago?” I often thought I was being a burden to my aunt, which is why I could not wait to grow up and be able to read for myself.

However, unknown to me then was the fact that my interest in her reading helped her achieve her dreams. Now she has over a dozen children’s book under her authorship. She has since revealed to me that I was her first audience and my opinions mattered a lot.

Even when I was old enough to read, she still kept track of what I read and sometimes made a few suggestions. When I won my first spelling contest she was in the audience cheering me on. She often insisted on reading all my English compositions. When I was eight and thought it was time for me to read my first thousand-page novel, all she did was smile. The fact is from the time my aunt first quenched my thirst for a well written book, I embarked on a journey that has lead me to the finer things that come with the mastery of the English language.

I have changed my career choice a few times in the course of my life. There was a time I wanted to write children’s books like my aunt. Then there was a time I wanted to be novelist, a journalist, a script writer, and a few others that have escaped my mind. Still, all this time my aunt’s success has been my reference point. For now it does not matter what I end up doing, but my love for creativity and the English language will have to be reflected in my career path. My aunt used to tell me that the English language is like a tree; while its roots dig for the goodness, it is the leaves that bask in it. Therefore, I have decided to keep digging and I am sure the goodness will be reflected.

500 Words Essay on My Inspiration

My inspiration, much like the compass that guides a lost traveler, has been the driving force behind my journey of self-discovery and personal growth. This inspirational figure is none other than Elon Musk, the visionary entrepreneur and the force behind companies like SpaceX and Tesla. His innovative thinking, relentless pursuit of his dreams, and resilience in the face of adversity have left an indelible mark on my psyche.

Elon Musk: The Visionary

Musk’s vision for a sustainable future and multi-planetary human existence is not only bold but also revolutionary. He dares to dream what most people would consider impossible, and this audaciousness is what sets him apart. His belief in the power of technology to solve critical human challenges is infectious. Musk’s visionary thinking has inspired me to think beyond the conventional, to question the status quo, and to imagine a future that aligns with the principles of sustainability and technological advancement.

Relentless Pursuit of Dreams

Musk’s journey has been anything but easy. From facing financial ruin in the early days of SpaceX and Tesla to dealing with numerous technical failures, his path has been littered with obstacles. Yet, his relentless pursuit of his dreams, his unwavering commitment to his vision, and his refusal to give up, no matter how insurmountable the challenges, is awe-inspiring. This tenacity has taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of staying true to one’s dreams, even when the odds are stacked against you.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of Musk’s journey is his resilience. He has faced numerous setbacks, both personal and professional, but has always bounced back stronger. His ability to maintain his optimism and to keep pushing forward, despite the setbacks, is a testament to his strength of character. This resilience has shown me that failure is not the end but rather a stepping stone towards success. It has taught me to view challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities for growth.

In conclusion, Elon Musk’s audacious vision, relentless pursuit of his dreams, and resilience in the face of adversity make him a source of inspiration for me. His journey serves as a reminder that with determination, perseverance, and a willingness to challenge the status quo, one can achieve the seemingly impossible. As I navigate my own path, I carry these lessons with me, using them as a guide to chart my own course towards a future that is as innovative and sustainable as the one Musk envisions.

Introduction

Books are a wonderful gift, and reading them is a great joy. They are the repository of man’s experience and wisdom gathered over time. They are the source of the vast majority of our knowledge . They enhance our perspective, improve our intelligence, and broaden our sympathies. An excellent book is more valuable than gold. Today, in this essay, I will tell you about a book that has greatly influenced me, and that book is none other than The Bhagavad Gita.

The Bhagavad Gita is the book that has had the biggest effect on me. It has changed my life, as well as the lives of millions of individuals from many religions and countries . PM Jhawahar Lal Nehru once stated that Gita, Gandhi, and Buddha were the three most influential people in his life. I first read Gita in Sir Edwin Arnold’s English translation, The Song Celestial. I afterward read Gandhiji’s basic translation of the Gita.

Power of Book

Ever since its origin, Hinduism has regarded the Bhagavad-Gita as the most significant religious book of the faith. Among believers, the book is seen as a guide to the road of truth. Lord Krishna is thought to have inspired the text known as the Gospel of the Lord. Furthermore, the Bhagavad-Gita is tied to the sixth book of the Mahabharata poetry. The Bhagavad-Gita is divided into 18 portions, each of which contains spiritual and practical Hinduism lessons.

Lord Krishna presented the everlasting message of the Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurushetra (in Haryana). On the battlefield, the armies of the Kauravas and Pandavas faced one other. Arjuna was the Pandavas’ leader, and Lord Krishna was his charioteer. Arjuna was plagued by uncertainty. His duty as a warrior was to battle. But the Kauravas were his own blood relatives. Should he murder his own family and friends? Lord Krishna offered him an energizing word of action: play up, play up, play up the game. Do your job regardless of the outcome.

Importance of Book in Our Life

The Gita’s core teaching is action, entire action, but desireless action . One must take the proper action, but one should not be concerned with the outcome. Leave the outcome of your activity. A person’s job is to execute his duty and work extremely hard. However, he should not be concerned with the outcome of the examination. “Again, let no one interpret renunciation (leaving the fruit) to indicate want of fruit for the renouncer,” Mahatma Gandhi stated. Renunciation is the absence of a desire for fruit. In truth, he who renounces reaps a thousand-fold reward. He who is always brooding (thinking) about the outcome frequently loses his nerve in the discharge of his duties.

My Book My Inspiration Essay 1500 Words

Some of the life lessons of the Bhagavad Gita:

Focus on your work.

Do your best and don’t worry about the outcome. When a person starts a task , he is first concerned about the outcome . As a result, he could perhaps focus well on his work and works less than that of his caliber and worry more about the result , which is why he does not get the desired result. According to Krishna, if you want your 100% result, you must first work with 100% devotion and not worry about the outcome before the actual result has arrived.

Do not be scared

The greatest dread an individual can have is the fear of death. According to Lord Krishna, if a person removes the fear of mortality from his mind, he becomes unstoppable in achieving his goal and can live a stress-free life.

Anger causes deception

Anger is one of the human weaknesses that constantly pulls him away from his well-being and causes him to become more confused about important life decisions. As a result, he loses his temper and becomes unable to distinguish between right and wrong, and by being angry, he ends up harming himself and becoming deviated by their goals.

Do not be in doubt

Doubt is a threat to an individual because when he doubts his caliber, he cannot achieve his goals; therefore, we must never doubt our caliber.

Maintain control at all times

Individuals who lack control over their actions are more likely to become sidetracked by their ambitions and experience failure in life, which causes stress . However , if they spend a few hours meditating, they can manage their minds and generate many new thoughts about their goals.

Do not avoid your duty

An individual is tied by duties from birth; throughout his life , he is called to complete his tasks rather than run away from them.

You were born empty-handed and will leave this earth empty-handed

When a person is born, he is born without any materialistic possessions. Whatever he has gotten from this earth, he must leave here.

Anger and Greed – Self-Destructive

These are extremely harmful to all of humanity. Anger destroys all relationships and friendships, while greed makes a person restless.

The Characters in Bhagavad Gita

Now, you must understand what each character represents in this book:

Arjuna: we in human form, with all our doubts, fears, and habits… He depicts you and me as we stand on the battlefield of life, confronted by all the various aspects of ourselves that keep us from realizing our actual essence.

Krishna is the ‘greater Self’ or ‘divine’.

The Pandavas represent the noble virtues that exist inside all of us.

The Kauravas are the competing forces within ourselves.

The Chariot represents our physical body.

The Horses: our five senses, which must be expertly managed and controlled by the Self in order for us to realize our actual essence.

More Dharma, less drama:

The Bhagavad Gita goes in-depth into the concept of ‘Dharma , ‘ which translates as ‘that which upholds’ and is also known as ‘life purpose’. Famous writers such as Henry David Theroux, John Keats, and Walter Hagan, as well as composer Beethoven, have all found solace and guidance in the pages of the Bhagavad Gita. Gandhi also saw the text as essential to discovering his life’s purpose.

Gita emphasizes the immortality of the soul. Arjuna hesitated to slay his opponents on the battlefield. “The soul never dies,” Krishna assured him . Only the body perishes. The soul has no birth and no death. We all lived in the previous life; we are living now, and we will live again in the next life. Thus, the cycle of life and death continues. Death has no significance.

The soul transforms the body in the same way that a man changes his clothes. Changing clothes is not a misfortune, and changing from one birth to another is not a reason for concern . When one person murders another, no one kills or is killed. The Gita is a section of the Mahabharata, a large Hindu epic. It has a million verses. The country of Kurushetra is sanctified by Krishna’s feet, Arjuna’s chariot, and the eternal message of the Gita. Millions of devout people flock to Kurushetra, especially during the solar eclipse.

No doubt, Gita is India’s pride. It allows the world to find its soul . “I consumed the material from cover to cover,” Gandhiji recounts of his first encounter with the Gita. The final 19 verses of the second chapter are now etched on the tablet of my heart. India is the world’s spiritual leader, and the Gita is India’s most important spiritual text. It, like a lighthouse, has guided thousands of ships of life adrift on this world’s dark sea.

A life manual

The Bhagavad Gita is an ancient Indian scripture based on the epic poem The Mahabharata. This is still the longest poem ever written, with over 100,000 shlokas (or over 200,000 verses) in total. Although merely a portion of this massive literature, the Bhagavad Gita is widely regarded as one of the most important and renowned yogic texts ever written. In order to discover and fully live our purpose, the Bhagavad Gita encourages us to live our lives with purity, confidence, work ethic, fairness, generosity, and integrity. We can use the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita to meet our own difficulties and decisions with fearlessness and honesty, just as Krishna encourages Arjuna to cast aside all doubts and trust in his highest Self.

Geeta is my favorite book of all time . Hindus learn how to live in the world through the Bhagavad Gita. This is my favorite book. It is considered a Hindu holy text. It is my true guidance and a constant companion. Every morning, I enjoy reading it. It contains vast amounts of information , wisdom, and virtue. It emphasizes the significance of self-effort, devotion to responsibility, and positive behaviors. It shows me that in the long run, good triumphs over evil. I adhere to all of Gita’s teachings. It brings me great happiness and serenity of mind.

Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter was a series of books authored by one of the most eminent writers of our generation, J.K. Rowling. These books showcase the wizarding world and its workings. J.K. Rowling has been so successful at weaving a picture of this world, that it feels real. Although the series contains seven books, I have a particular favourite. My favourite book from the series is The Goblet of fire.

When I started reading the book, it caught my attention instantly. Even though I had read all the previous parts, none of the books caught my attention as this one did. It gave a larger perspective into the wizarding world. One of the things which excite me the most about this book is the introduction of the other wizard schools. The concept of the Tri-wizard tournament is one of the most brilliant pieces I have come across in the Harry Potter series.

In addition, this book also contains some of my favourite characters. The moment I read about Victor Krum’s entry, I was star struck. The aura and personality of that character described by Rowling are simply brilliant. Further, it made me become a greater fan of the series.

I have read many books but never come across a friendship like that of Harry, Hermoine, and Ron. These three musketeers stuck together throughout the books and never gave up. It taught me the value of a good friend.

Further, the series of Harry Potter taught me that no one is perfect. Everyone has good and evil inside them. We are the ones who choose what we wish to be. This helped me in making better choices and becoming a better human being. We see how the most flawed characters like Snape had goodness inside them. Similarly, how the nicest ones like Dumbledore had some bad traits. This changed my perspective towards people and made me more considerate.

Finally, these books gave me hope. They taught me the meaning of hope and how there is light at the end of the tunnel. It gave me the strength to cling on to hope in the most desperate times just like Harry did all his life. These are some of the most essential things I learned from Harry Potter.

In conclusion, while there were many movies made in the books. Nothing beats the essence and originality of the books. The details and inclusiveness of books cannot be replaced by any form of media. Therefore, the Goblet of Fire remains to be my favourite book.

The initial encounter, the anticipation as I turned the first few pages, and the gradual realization that I had stumbled upon a literary gem – each step in this journey contributes to the profound connection I would develop with the book.

Chapter 2: Words That Resonate: The Power of Narrative

The heart of this transformative experience lies in the words woven seamlessly into the narrative. The author’s ability to articulate emotions, paint vivid imagery, and craft compelling characters is nothing short of mesmerizing. As I navigate the chapters, the characters become confidants, and their struggles mirror my own, turning mere words into a powerful force that fuels my spirit.

Chapter 3: Moments of Reflection: Finding Myself in the Pages

Beyond the plotline, the book serves as a mirror reflecting my own journey. The protagonist’s triumphs and tribulations become a mirror to my own life experiences, prompting moments of deep reflection. It’s within these pages that I find solace, empathy, and, most importantly, the courage to confront my own challenges.

Chapter 4: Lessons Learned: A Guide to Self-Discovery

Embedded in the narrative are invaluable lessons that transcend the confines of fiction. Themes of resilience, love, and the pursuit of one’s passions permeate the storyline, offering a roadmap for navigating life’s complexities. This section explores the profound impact these lessons have had on my personal growth and development.

Chapter 5: Inspiration and Expiration: Breathing Life into Dreams

Just as inspiration and expiration are essential to the rhythm of life, the book becomes a rhythmic pulse in my existence. It breathes life into my dreams, serving as a constant reminder that inspiration fuels creativity and innovation. This chapter explores how the book has become a source of motivation, propelling me forward in my endeavors.

A Lifelong Companion As this literary journey unfolds, it becomes evident that the book has transcended its role as mere fiction; it has become a lifelong companion. Its influence extends beyond the realms of entertainment, reaching into the depths of my aspirations, guiding my decisions, and shaping my character. In every page turned, there’s a whisper of encouragement, a nod to resilience, and a celebration of the extraordinary potential residing within the ordinary.

In essence, “My Book, My Inspiration” is not just a collection of printed words; it is a chronicle of personal growth, a testament to the transformative power of literature, and a reminder that within the pages of a book, one can find not only solace but the profound inspiration needed to navigate the complexities of life.

500 Words Essay on My Inspiration In Life

Who inspires me.

Everyone has someone who inspires them to be better, to reach higher, and to dream bigger. For me, that person is my grandmother. She is the light that guides me through my life’s journey. Her life story, the kindness she shows to everyone, and her never-give-up attitude are what make me want to become the best version of myself.

Grandmother’s Life Story

My grandmother grew up in a small village with very little. She didn’t have the chance to go to school for long because she had to work to help her family. But she loved to learn. She taught herself to read and write more by reading old newspapers and practicing every day. Even now, she tells me stories of those times and how important it is to keep learning, no matter what. When I think of her, I feel motivated to do well in school and to never stop being curious.

Kindness to Everyone

Another thing about my grandmother that inspires me is her kindness. She has a smile for everyone and always finds a way to help those in need. I’ve seen her give food to people who are hungry and offer warm clothes to those who are cold. She says, “Being kind costs nothing but means everything.” I try to live by these words and show kindness just like she does.

Never-Give-Up Attitude

Life has thrown many challenges at my grandmother. She has seen tough times, but she never lets them defeat her. She always finds a way to solve problems, and she never stops trying. When I face something hard in school or with friends, I remember her strength. It gives me the courage to keep going and not to quit, just like she never does.

Learning From Mistakes

My grandmother always says that mistakes are just another way to learn. She doesn’t get upset when something goes wrong. Instead, she looks for what can be learned from it. This has taught me not to be afraid of making mistakes. I know that when I mess up, it’s not the end of the world. It’s just a step in learning and getting better.

Looking to the Future

Thinking about my grandmother and all that she stands for helps me to dream about my future. I want to be someone who makes a difference, just like she does. I want to work hard, be kind, and face challenges with a brave heart. She has shown me that it’s possible to do all these things, even when life is tough.

In conclusion, my grandmother is my inspiration in life. Her story, her kindness, her strength, and her wisdom light up the path I want to follow. She may not be famous or have done world-changing things, but to me, she is a hero. She makes me believe that I can achieve my dreams and be a good person along the way. Whenever I think of her, I am filled with hope and a desire to reach for the stars, just like she has always done.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

I was born and raised in a working-class city, Elektrostal, Moscow region. I received a higher education in television in Moscow. I studied to be a documentary photographer. My vision of the aesthetics of the frame was significantly influenced by the aesthetics of my city – the endless forests and swamps of the Moscow region with endless factories, typical architecture and a meagre color palette. In this harsh world, people live and work, raise children, grow geranium, throw parties and live trouble, run a ski cross. They are the main characters of my photo projects.

I study a person in a variety of circumstances. We blog with friends with stories of such people. We are citizen journalists. In my works, I touch upon the topics of homelessness, people’s attitude to their bodies, sexual objectification, women’s work, alienation and living conditions of different people. The opportunity to communicate with my characters gives me a sense of belonging and modernity of life.

My photos create the effect of presence, invisible observation of people. I don’t interfere with what’s going on, I’m taking the place of an outside observer. I’m a participant in exhibitions in Rome (Loosenart Gallery), Collaborated with the Russian Geographical Community.

Khokhloma Spoon: Spiritualized Sustenance

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

Looking closely at this little spoon reveals a story of synthesis, the harmonious blending of craft techniques and forms of expression practiced by refugees fleeing persecution and the locals who welcomed them, a style originating in settings both secular and sacred. The centuries-old technique known as khokhloma (accent on the last syllable) used to create this spoon, an ingenious art of illusion that transforms humble wood into precious metal, is a key example of art arising under harsh conditions, in times of scarcity and official oppression; as such, it is a microcosm of Russian art throughout its history.

The colors of the spoon evoke the “gold in azure” of religious icons as well as the flora and fauna of the natural world. The blue color flows around the gold designs akin to the rivers that were crucial for the creation of khokhloma: the workshops where the style arose were situated along rivers in the trans-Volga region of Russia whose water powered the lathes used for turning the wood; rivers then served as trade routes along which khokhloma wares traveled (khokhloma is named for the settlement that served as the starting point for its trade). The gold designs depicting plants, berries, and woodland creatures celebrate the natural bounty of the forests along those rivers where the craftspeople who first created khokhloma found refuge and sustenance, both physical and spiritual.

Description

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

This wooden spoon is 5.5 inches long, a bit larger than an average teaspoon. The rounded handle is straight and has a pointed end; it narrows slightly as it approaches the rounded oval bowl of the spoon. The color scheme is deep blue and light-catching gold: the handle is mostly gold, with the end of it painted blue; the bowl of the spoon is blue, covered with delicate gold flower, leaf, and berry designs. Looking closely reveals a bird perched on the plant stem that runs diagonally across the bowl of the spoon. The designs on the front and back are virtually identical, with the one on the inside of the bowl just a bit smaller given the smaller space that it occupies. That distinctive floral design is instantly recognizable to Russians as the khokhloma style. Yet the color scheme of this spoon swaps blue for the expected red, so the object is traditional and innovative at the same time.

How Are Objects Such as These Used?

This spoon is a souvenir that is also food-safe. One of our émigré interlocutors told us that she recalled eating with such painted spoons as a child, so these ornamental objects were a part of everyday life. Silver spoons were already being used in Kievan Rus at the end of the tenth century. Soon after Prince Vladimir baptized his people in 998, he instituted the rule that his courtiers eat not with their hands, but with specially designated implements, as part of his overall campaign to raise their cultural level. The Primary Chronicle describes the Prince’s retinue ( druzhina ) complaining about having to eat with wooden rather than silver spoons.

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

It became customary to carry one’s own personal spoon (sometimes a knife as well) in a special case or simply tucked inside one’s belt or boot. This practice gave rise to numerous sayings, such as “a thrifty guest never goes anywhere without a spoon.” Another saying, “one with a plow and seven with a spoon” ( odin s soshkoi, semero s lozhkoi ) referred to the peasantry feeding the parasitical upper classes, and inspired a revolutionary poster depicting the beleaguered peasant and his exploiters.

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

In Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s 1962 novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich , the protagonist, a savvy peasant trying to survive the gulag, has a spoon that he carries inside his boot and uses it to get every last drop of life-sustaining prison porridge: “That spoon was precious, it had traveled all over the north with him. He’d cast it himself from aluminum wire in a sand mold and scratched on it [the name of the prison camp]: ‘Ust-Izhma, 1944.’”

Spoons are not only used for eating in Russia; wooden spoons in particular play a crucial role in khokhloma icon painting, an art form suppressed in Soviet times but now revived in the town of Semyonov. Elena Komarova writes: “the paints are ground by hand, a process in which the famous Semyonov wooden spoon is essential. Neither porcelain nor plastic vessels are suitable for pulverizing the pigments, because the surface of the spoon must be rough. A natural dye is placed into the spoon; the painter adds a mixture of water and egg yolk, then mixes everything with her finger.”

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

For centuries, spoons have also served as musical instruments in Russia. The Eastern Slavs may have come up with the idea of using spoons in this way during holiday festivities when guests would grab whatever potential noise-maker was at hand—spoons but also forks, pots, pans, basins, or samovar pipes. (The scythe and the saw took on a musical function as well.) Spoons were widely used as instruments among the peasantry, and some scholars speculate that Russians using spoons to produce music found inspiration in Spanish castanets. Lubki from the 18 th and 19 th centuries depict the wandering minstrels known as skomorokhi wielding musical spoons embellished with jingle bells.

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

Another lubok, depicting a goat and a bear merry-making with musical instruments, shows the goat holding bell-adorned spoons.

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

Musical wooden spoons are made from more durable types of wood than those used for eating; they also have longer handles that are sometimes decorated with bells. Typically a performer will secure two spoons between the fingers of the left hand and strike them with the third spoon. Sometimes the technique is more elaborate, involving five spoons, including one tucked into a boot top, all played by a single performer. By the 19 th century, spoons were widely featured in choruses and folk ensembles.

Among Russians, spoons have such a strong association with music that a lawyer named Rustam Nugmanov from the town of Elektrostal’ invented a musical instrument he called “victory spoons” that were manufactured to be used by Russian soccer fans during the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Nugmanov wanted Russians to have their own “national fan accessory” akin to the vuvuzela whose sound was inescapable during the 2010 World Cup matches in South Africa. He said, “in Russia we have no national musical instrument or craft object designed for fans that would reflect the extraordinary richness of Russian culture.” Nugmanov’s instrument takes the form of a letter V-shaped holder into which two wooden spoons are inserted that can then be clacked together. Nugmanov was pleasantly surprised to receive a million-ruble (around $17,000) grant from President Putin to help him develop the invention. It is a curious object, but maybe less so when one considers the hybridity that is essential to much of Russian culture. The wooden spoons appear emblematically Russian; yet it is an international object as well—as Nugmanov says, “this instrument is a symbol of victory because its shape recalls the Latin letter V, from the word “ victoria .”

Reflections

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

The Old Believer origin story of khokhloma is about artists fleeing faith-based prosecution and finding a secular outlet for icon painting techniques, and thereby discovering a visual style that has enriched the world of design. Icon painters facing an analogous predicament under the enforced atheism of the Soviet regime discovered another way to channel their techniques into a new a new art form, the black lacquer boxes named palekh for the village where the craft originated. Igor, the wood sculptor and amateur historian, shared the latter story with us at the Vernisazh. It is a narrative that many Russians hold dear about art evolving and even flourishing under oppressive conditions.

Elena told us that nowadays young people come to the market not planning to buy anything, but find themselves attracted to the khokhloma wares, themselves not knowing why; it is that gold glow that draws them in. She said that the gold color was used in icons so that viewers could feel warmth coming from them. We had not thought of that before, having always just associated gold with wealth. But then, gold signifies both: warmth and wealth. The Russian word for the latter, bogatstvo, means both financial wealth and natural abundance—the riches of the earth. (Indeed bogatstvo derives from the same root as bog, “god.”) And that is appropriate, as the natural motifs on khokhloma wares celebrate the gifts of the earth, specifically the forest that sustains humans when agriculture comes up short. The forest has also sustained them spiritually by giving shelter from persecution, allowing people to worship as they choose.

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

In her book Heart-Pine Russia , Jane Costlow details how Old Believers, outlaws, and others found refuge in forests. In her account, Russians’ relationship to the forest—which we could extend to nature as a whole –was that “of both affection and need, in which humans’ dependence on resources (for fire, warmth, building materials) often exists in uneasy tension with more obviously emotional or symbolic associations” (7) [emphasis in original]. Costlow speaks of the forest as an icon of Russian national identity, as attested by cultural production from classic novels of the nineteenth century to the late Soviet village prose and Nikita Mikhalkov’s 1999 blockbuster film The Barber of Siberia . The opening credits of the latter work show “endless woodland,” while the plot “imagines Russia’s vast natural resources as prey to conniving Americans” (214). The film’s title refers both to the profession that the patriotic protagonist takes up at the end of his narrative arc—he becomes a barber after being exiled to Siberia—and to an American-invented tree cutting machine seemingly inspired by the rapacious “super axe hacker” in Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax which we see devouring a Siberian forest in a horrific sequence.

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

Costlow cites an 1844 account of a Russian estate that “enumerates fifty-one categories of products … from local forests –everything from linden bark stripped for peasant shoes and birch for canisters, to tar, elm ashes, and willow bark. Game, honey, berries, mushrooms—all were essential and sustaining ‘gifts’ of the forest economy… The symbolic rituals of rural life also depended on woodlands, including seasonal rites [that] involved gathering the boughs of young birches to decorate homes and the village church.” (87) This ritual use of the trees underscores the intertwining of nature and spiritual expression whose emblem we can see in the khokhloma icon-and-nature inspired design.

The color scheme of our khokhloma spoon brings to mind a juxtaposition in the title of a 1904 book of poetry by Russian Symbolist Andrei Bely: Gold in Azure —two colors prominently featured in sacred icons that represented exuberance and affirmation for the poet. In 1933, Bely glossed the colors in the title as follows: “Standing amidst hilly plains and seeking oblivion, I spent hours studying the colors of the fields, and wrote verse about them. I called my book of poems Gold in Azure . ‘Gold’ refers to the ripened grain fields, and ‘azure’ to the air.” In his formative years as a poet, Bely believed that art should not merely depict the world, but that the world should strive to resemble art; that the poet glimpses the mythical in the everyday, and can see the world in its ideal, transfigured state. That is why the sky in his verse is not merely blue, but “azure”—the color of the transcendent realm. The sun in some of Bely’s poems, and fields of grain in others, are not simply yellow, but gold—the color of haloes signifying divinity in icons.

my book my inspiration essay 1500 words

Russian has two opposed words for existence that lack analogues in English. As Svetlana Boym explains in her book Common Places: Mythologies of Everyday Life in Russia , byt refers to everyday, earthbound life (at times it has a pejorative connotation and translates as “the daily grind”) while bytie signifies a more lofty, spiritual form of being. The spoon, a quintessential object of byt , has been elevated by Elena’s design. Elena said that she was catering to her customers in creating the blue/gold color scheme of her spoon, and yet that choice led her back to the color juxtaposition of religious icons that inspired the Symbolist poets and, before them, the icon painters who had developed the khokhloma style 300 years ago. In this humble little household implement designated for the most basic of human activities needed for survival, we catch a glimpse of sky and sun, of sacred painting, and of the desire to transcend mere material existence.

What I’ve Learned From My Students’ College Essays

The genre is often maligned for being formulaic and melodramatic, but it’s more important than you think.

An illustration of a high school student with blue hair, dreaming of what to write in their college essay.

By Nell Freudenberger

Most high school seniors approach the college essay with dread. Either their upbringing hasn’t supplied them with several hundred words of adversity, or worse, they’re afraid that packaging the genuine trauma they’ve experienced is the only way to secure their future. The college counselor at the Brooklyn high school where I’m a writing tutor advises against trauma porn. “Keep it brief , ” she says, “and show how you rose above it.”

I started volunteering in New York City schools in my 20s, before I had kids of my own. At the time, I liked hanging out with teenagers, whom I sometimes had more interesting conversations with than I did my peers. Often I worked with students who spoke English as a second language or who used slang in their writing, and at first I was hung up on grammar. Should I correct any deviation from “standard English” to appeal to some Wizard of Oz behind the curtains of a college admissions office? Or should I encourage students to write the way they speak, in pursuit of an authentic voice, that most elusive of literary qualities?

In fact, I was missing the point. One of many lessons the students have taught me is to let the story dictate the voice of the essay. A few years ago, I worked with a boy who claimed to have nothing to write about. His life had been ordinary, he said; nothing had happened to him. I asked if he wanted to try writing about a family member, his favorite school subject, a summer job? He glanced at his phone, his posture and expression suggesting that he’d rather be anywhere but in front of a computer with me. “Hobbies?” I suggested, without much hope. He gave me a shy glance. “I like to box,” he said.

I’ve had this experience with reluctant writers again and again — when a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously. Of course the primary goal of a college essay is to help its author get an education that leads to a career. Changes in testing policies and financial aid have made applying to college more confusing than ever, but essays have remained basically the same. I would argue that they’re much more than an onerous task or rote exercise, and that unlike standardized tests they are infinitely variable and sometimes beautiful. College essays also provide an opportunity to learn precision, clarity and the process of working toward the truth through multiple revisions.

When a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously.

Even if writing doesn’t end up being fundamental to their future professions, students learn to choose language carefully and to be suspicious of the first words that come to mind. Especially now, as college students shoulder so much of the country’s ethical responsibility for war with their protest movement, essay writing teaches prospective students an increasingly urgent lesson: that choosing their own words over ready-made phrases is the only reliable way to ensure they’re thinking for themselves.

Teenagers are ideal writers for several reasons. They’re usually free of preconceptions about writing, and they tend not to use self-consciously ‘‘literary’’ language. They’re allergic to hypocrisy and are generally unfiltered: They overshare, ask personal questions and call you out for microaggressions as well as less egregious (but still mortifying) verbal errors, such as referring to weed as ‘‘pot.’’ Most important, they have yet to put down their best stories in a finished form.

I can imagine an essay taking a risk and distinguishing itself formally — a poem or a one-act play — but most kids use a more straightforward model: a hook followed by a narrative built around “small moments” that lead to a concluding lesson or aspiration for the future. I never get tired of working with students on these essays because each one is different, and the short, rigid form sometimes makes an emotional story even more powerful. Before I read Javier Zamora’s wrenching “Solito,” I worked with a student who had been transported by a coyote into the U.S. and was reunited with his mother in the parking lot of a big-box store. I don’t remember whether this essay focused on specific skills or coping mechanisms that he gained from his ordeal. I remember only the bliss of the parent-and-child reunion in that uninspiring setting. If I were making a case to an admissions officer, I would suggest that simply being able to convey that experience demonstrates the kind of resilience that any college should admire.

The essays that have stayed with me over the years don’t follow a pattern. There are some narratives on very predictable topics — living up to the expectations of immigrant parents, or suffering from depression in 2020 — that are moving because of the attention with which the student describes the experience. One girl determined to become an engineer while watching her father build furniture from scraps after work; a boy, grieving for his mother during lockdown, began taking pictures of the sky.

If, as Lorrie Moore said, “a short story is a love affair; a novel is a marriage,” what is a college essay? Every once in a while I sit down next to a student and start reading, and I have to suppress my excitement, because there on the Google Doc in front of me is a real writer’s voice. One of the first students I ever worked with wrote about falling in love with another girl in dance class, the absolute magic of watching her move and the terror in the conflict between her feelings and the instruction of her religious middle school. She made me think that college essays are less like love than limerence: one-sided, obsessive, idiosyncratic but profound, the first draft of the most personal story their writers will ever tell.

Nell Freudenberger’s novel “The Limits” was published by Knopf last month. She volunteers through the PEN America Writers in the Schools program.

Small Wonder: Essays By Barbara Kingsolver Cover Image

  • Description
  • About the Author
  • Reviews & Media

In twenty-two wonderfully articulate essays, Barbara Kingsolver raises her voice in praise of nature, family, literature, and the joys of everyday life while examining the genesis of war, violence, and poverty in our world

From the author of High Tide in Tucson, comes Small Wonder, a new collection of essays that begins with a parable gleaned from recent news: villagers search for a missing infant boy and find him, unharmed, in the cave of a dangerous bear that has mothered him like one of her own. Clearly, our understanding of evil needs to be revised. What we fear most can save us. From this tale, Barbara Kingsolver goes on to consider the chasm between the privileged and the poor, which she sees as the root cause of violence and war in our time. She writes about her attachment to the land, to nature and wilderness, trees and mountains-the place from which she tells her stories. Whether worrying about the dangers of genetically engineered food crops, or creating opportunities for children to feel useful and competent - like growing food for the family’s table - Kingsolver looks for small wonders, where they grow, and celebrates them.

Barbara Kingsolver is the author of ten bestselling works of fiction, including the novels Unsheltered , Flight Behavior , The Lacuna , The Poisonwood Bible , Animal Dreams , and The Bean Trees , as well as books of poetry, essays, and creative nonfiction. Her work of narrative nonfiction is the influential bestseller Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life . Kingsolver’s work has been translated into more than twenty languages and has earned literary awards and a devoted readership at home and abroad. She was awarded the National Humanities Medal, our country’s highest honor for service through the arts, as well as the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for the body of her work. She lives with her family on a farm in southern Appalachia.

The Work of Fyodor Dostoyevsky: “Composed Purely and Wholly of the Stuff of the Soul”

Even in English translation, Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky ‘s works pulse with the terror and ecstasy of the human soul. But don’t take our word for it.

In her essay on Russian literature, British author Virginia Woolf wrote this:

“The novels of Dostoevsky are seething whirlpools, gyrating sandstorms, waterspouts which hiss and boil and suck us in.”

She went on to say that the only author more powerful than Fyodor Dostoyevsky was Shakespeare. While some authors ( most notably Vladimir Nabokov ) can’t stand Dostoyevsky’s frenzied style of composition, no one can deny his immense influence on 20th and 21st century art and philosophy.

Dostoyevsky’s oeuvre examines both the depths of depravity to which man can sink and the transcendent heights to which he can ascend. The images and insights Dostoyevsky captures in his electric prose will haunt your psyche long after you’ve finished his books.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at Dostoyevsky’s life and work to get you started on your own journey into this master’s mind.

Dostoyevsky’s Early Years And Imprisonment

Portrait of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, via Wikimedia Commons

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was born in 1821 in Moscow. His father was a doctor and his mother was a deeply pious Russian Orthodox Christian from a merchant family. Critics believe Dostoyevsky’s close proximity to the sick at his father’s hospital influenced aspects of his later fiction, most of which focuses on marginalized segments of Russian society.

In 1837, Dostoyevsky’s mother suddenly died. He lost his father just two years later. At that time, Dostoyevsky was studying to become a military engineer at the Academy of Military Engineering in St. Petersburg . Despite the promise of a stable career, Dostoyevsky never wanted to become an engineer. The young Fyodor fell under the spell of fiction from an early age. Although Dostoyevsky earned enough credits to become a sub lieutenant, he decided to try his luck as a writer.

A few of Dostoyevsky’s favorite authors at this time were:

  • Sir Walter Scott
  • Charles Dickens
  • Aleksandr Pushkin
  • Honoré de Balzac

Dostoyevsky’s First Novel: Poor Folk

Amazingly, Dostoyevsky met with instant success after the publication of his first novel: Poor Folk . While this epistolary novel about a poor copying clerk isn’t studied much today, it already shows Dostoyevsky’s interest in psychological realism. Dostoyevsky, who was hailed as a “new Gogol” by St. Petersburg critics, often said that this was the happiest moment of his life.

While Dostoyevsky gained entrance into St. Petersburg’s intelligencia, he instantly ruffled feathers with other writers. In particular, Fathers and Sons author Ivan Turgenev was turned off by Dostoyevsky’s temperament. Unfortunately, Dostoyevsky’s second novel about a schizophrenic, which he called The Double , didn’t do nearly as well as Poor Folk . Dostoyevsky’s continued focus on individual psychology rather than societal issues didn’t endear him to the more radical segments of the St. Petersburg literati.

It was also during this time that Dostoyevsky became more active in politics. He joined a group called the Petrashevsky Circle in 1847.

While this group was interested in socialist ideas, Dostoyevsky mainly joined because he was a staunch opponent of serfdom. Dostoyevsky’s involvement with this group led to his arrest in 1849. He was sentenced to be shot by a firing squad at Semyonovsky Square in December. Just before the officers pulled their triggers, Tsar Nicholas I removed the death penalty. Dostoyevsky was reassigned to serve his prison sentence in a Siberian work camp.

Russia’s First Great Prison Memoir: House of the Dead

As you could imagine, Dostoyevsky’s experiences in prison deeply affected his mind. To compound his already immense difficulties, Dostoyevsky started to develop epilepsy in prison, a disease that would plague him for the rest of his life.

All of these trials, however, served as inspiration for Dostoyevsky’s faith in the Russian Orthodox Church. He famously wrote these words in his diary:

“If someone proved to me that Christ is outside the truth, and that in reality the truth were outside of Christ, then I should prefer to remain with Christ rather than with the truth.”

When he was allowed to return to Russia ten years later, Dostoyevsky married a widow named Mariya Dmitriyevna Isayeva . Sadly, Isayeva died of tuberculosis only seven years into the marriage.

To earn a living, Dostoyevsky immediately began writing down stories from his time in Siberia. This eventually became the powerful memoir House of the Dead , which we discussed previously in our post about five impactful books about prison .

In this vivid text, Dostoyevsky describes both the horrors of his criminal companions and the sadism of the prison guards. Despite these atrocities, Dostoyevsky insists that no form of social engineering can help criminals. Instead, Dostoyevsky insists on personal freedom and humanity’s natural goodness, a conviction that put him at odds with the socialists of his day.

Indeed, Dostoyevsky’s insistence on liberty over social engineering made him one of the Bolsheviks’ least favorite writers.

Dostoyevsky’s Breakthrough: Notes from the Underground (1864)

Almost all literary critics agree that Dostoyevsky’s novella Notes from the Underground marks the beginning of the author’s mature fiction.

Notes from Underground cover, via Wikimedia Commons

Published in 1864, this novella is split into two sections and is narrated by a “spiteful” unnamed narrator. The first section is a direct attack on the idealism of Russian utopians, especially Nikolay Gavrilovich Chernyshevsky. Dostoyevsky’s narrator argues that even if a “perfect” society could be created, humans wouldn’t accept it. Why? Because such a system denies free will and irrationality.

In the second section of this novella, Dostoyevsky relates a story from the narrator’s past. In this short story, the narrator meets a group of friends for dinner and gets into a nasty row. Later on, he becomes entangled to a prostitute named Liza. This second section illustrates the narrator’s previous insights into the irrationality of man in story form.

If you’re just beginning to read Dostoyevsky, this is the book to start off with. In addition to being an engaging read in its own right, Notes from the Underground clearly lays out all the major themes that come up again and again in Dostoyevsky’s later novels.

Dostoyevsky’s Great Novels of 1860s

At the start of the 1860s, Dostoyevsky took an extended trip to Western Europe . His reason for doing so was twofold. First, he wanted to observe how Westerners differed from Russians. Second, and perhaps more importantly, he wanted to escape his debts. Dostoyevsky was a compulsive gambler, and he racked up astronomical debts in his homeland.

The Gambler (1866)

Luckily for Dostoyevsky, he soon met Anna Grigoryevna Snitkina. Snitkina worked as Dostoyevsky’s stenographer as he dictated his next novel: The Gambler .

This novel, about the tutor/gambling addict Alexey Ivanovitch, was directly based on Dostoyevsky’s own addictions. In 1867, a year after The Gambler was published, Dostoyevsky and Snitkina were married. Snitkina worked hard to straighten out Dostoyevsky’s finances so he had a better environment in which to work. The couple had four children, but only two grew up into adulthood.

Crime and Punishment (1866)

Dostoyevsky’s next great novel, Crime and Punishment , is his most widely studied work.

Crime and Punishment cover, first edition, via Wikimedia Commons

The bulk of this novel is set in St. Petersburg during a sweltering summer. Raskolnikov, the novel’s protagonist, is a poor student enflamed by ideas of moral relativism from the West. Believing he’s a “superior man,” Raskolnikov murders two women in cold blood. Throughout the rest of this novel, Dostoyevsky analyzes the numerous conflicting motivations floating around Raskolnikov’s mind. This novel is also well known for characters like the sensualist Svidrigailov and Detective Porfiry Petrovich.

The Idiot (1869)

Dostoyevsky followed Crime and Punishment with another great novel: The Idiot . Published in 1869, this novel centers on the epileptic Prince Myshkin (the “idiot”) whose good nature only gets him into deep trouble. The novel almost reads like an elaborate Russian soap opera, full of love triangles, greed, deception, and even a suicide attempt.

Dostoyevsky’s Late Masterpieces

Just when the world thought Dostoyevsky was done ticking off the radicals, he showed that he still had more up his sleeve.

The Possessed (1872)

The Possessed (also called The Demons ) was published in 1872. Many readers see The Possessed as a prophetic novel, especially the novel’s second plot about a group of violent utopian revolutionaries. Even today, The Possessed is championed as a brilliant work of political psychology.

The Brothers Karamazov (1880)

Dostoyevsky’s final novel, The Brothers Karamazov , is easily one of the top five novels ever written. Although ostensibly a crime novel, The Brothers Karamazov reads more like a long meditation on the greatest themes in all of literature: the meaning of life, the nature of God, free will versus determinism, and the eternal struggle between good and evil.

All three of the Karamazov brothers approach life in different ways with varying results. Dmitry, the eldest, is a sensualist. Ivan, the middle child, is an atheistic intellectual. The youngest son, Alyosha, is a monk. The plot of this novel focuses on the murder of the boys’ tyrannical father, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov. But the murder isn’t really the issue in this piece. Like all great works of fiction, Dostoyevsky is concerned with the quest for the supreme truth about life and death.

The most famous part of this novel is a short section called “The Grand Inquisitor.” Many college students just read this chapter as a standalone piece. In it, Ivan imagines what would happen if Christ returned to earth during the Grand Inquisition. Dostoyevsky hoped to provide the greatest arguments against God in this chapter only so he could disprove them with the rest of the novel.

Dostoyevsky died of a hemorrhage one year after publishing The Brothers Karamazov in St. Petersburg. He was 59 years old.

Dostoyevsky: Voice Of The Russian Soul

In all of his fiction, Dostoyevsky was more interested in the complexities of the individual soul rather than the fashionable “-isms” of his day. Dostoyevsky was a man who valued faith and individual liberty and who clearly understood the irrational side of man’s psyche. The psychological insight in Dostoyevsky’s works profoundly influenced the course of 20th century philosophy, psychology, and theology.

In fact, Dostoyevsky’s influence is still strong on many major thinkers in our own day and age. For example, In the World Interior of Capital by German theorist Peter Sloterdij k examines globalism using Dostoyevsky’s observations of Western Europe.

In The Decline of the West , German historian Oswald Spengler wrote that Dostoyevsky and Leo Tolstoy are the heart and soul of Russian literature. While Tolstoy’s great novels spoke for the more Westernized aspects of Russian culture, Dostoyevsky wrote of the Russian peasantry and the native soul.

If you’ve never read a Dostoyevsky novel before, prepare yourself for the most intense reading experience of your life.
