Curriculum & Coursework

Our programs are full-time degree programs which officially begin in August. Students are expected to complete their program in five years. Typically, the first two years are spent on coursework, at the end of which students take a field exam, and then another three years on dissertation research and writing.

The Marketing program draws on computer science, economics, behavioral science, and psychological methods to focus on marketing problems faced by the firm and its management. Through a combination of discipline- and field-based methods, the curriculum enables students to master concepts and research skills directly relevant to business problems. Candidates must come to understand the point of view of practicing managers and be able to bring theory and careful research to bear in illuminating important business problems.

The program requires a minimum of 13 semester-long doctoral courses. Students in the Marketing program are required to complete a year-long discipline sequence typically in microeconomics or psychology. They also complete courses in the areas of machine learning, computer science, statistics, research methods, academic field seminars, and two MBA elective curriculum courses. In addition to HBS courses, students often take courses at other Harvard Schools and MIT.

Research & Dissertation

Students in Marketing begin research in their first year typically by working with a faculty member. By their third and fourth years, most students are launched on a solid research and publication stream. The dissertation may take the form of three publishable papers or one longer dissertation.

Recent examples of doctoral thesis research include: The effects of brand extensions on the value of parent brands; Multi-method examination of the consumption of “knockoffs” of high status brands, and the counter-intuitive positive outcomes for consumer-brand relationships; Competitive analysis of pricing and quality decisions in industries with strictly complimentary products; The psychological effects of pricing, and how these affect consumers and firms; and "Choice amnesia," the motivated forgetting of difficult decisions.

The Ph.D. Program in the Department of Economics at Harvard is addressed to students of high promise who wish to prepare themselves in teaching and research in academia or for responsible positions in government, research organizations, or business enterprises. Students are expected to devote themselves full-time to their programs of study.

The program prepares students for productive and stimulating careers as economists. Courses and seminars offered by the department foster an intellectually active and stimulating environment. Each week, the department sponsors more than 15 different seminars on such topics as environmental economics, economic growth and development, monetary and fiscal policy, international economics, industrial organization, law and economics, behavioral economics, labor economics, and economic history. Top scholars from both domestic and international communities are often invited speakers at the seminars.  The Harvard community outside of the department functions as a strong and diverse resource. Students in the department are free to pursue research interests with scholars throughout the University. Faculty of the Harvard Law School, Kennedy School of Government, and Harvard Business School, for example, are available to students for consultation, instruction, and research guidance. As a member of the Harvard community, students in the department can register for courses in the various schools and have access to the enormous library resources available through the University. There are over 90 separate library units at Harvard, with the total collections of books and pamphlets numbering over 13 million.  Both the department and the wider University draw some of the brightest students from around the world, which makes for a student body that is culturally diverse and likely unequaled in the range of intellectual interests of its members. These factors combine to add an important dimension to the educational process. Students are able to learn from one another, collaborate on research projects and publications, and form bonds that are not broken by distance once the degree is completed and professional responsibilities lead them in different directions.

To estimate how much you and your family will need to contribute for one year at Harvard, we're going to take you through the following steps:

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about harvard's financial aid program, does applying for financial aid affect my chances of admission.

No. Your financial circumstances are never an impediment to admission. International students have the same access to financial aid funding as do U.S. citizens.

Are there any merit-based scholarships at Harvard?

No, we admit students based on their strengths and talents, but all Harvard-administered aid is based only on financial need, and we treat all admitted students equally in terms of their eligibility for that aid.

What happens to my financial aid if I receive additional outside assistance or other scholarships?

A large percentage of each entering first-year class receives one or more outside awards from national or local organizations. When adjusting the Harvard financial aid package, 100% of the total outside award amount is first deducted from your work expectation. If the total of outside awards exceeds your work expectation, that excess amount is deducted from the Harvard Scholarship. Since outside awards are additional resources that help to meet need, they may not be used to replace your parents’ contribution or other expected family resource.

For example, if you were originally offered a financial aid package with a $3,500 job, and a $15,000 Harvard Scholarship and subsequently receive a $2,000 National Merit award and $1,000 from the Elks Club, then we will reduce your term-time job expectation to $500. Only if outside awards exceeded $3,500 would they have any impact upon the amount of Harvard Scholarship.

Is there financial aid for international students?

Yes, financial aid is provided on exactly the same basis for international students as for American students. Although international students are not eligible for any federal funding, the College has its own job and scholarship money available to international students.

How should I fill out the Net Price Calculator if my parents are divorced or separated?

If your parents are divorced or separated, each parent’s contribution is assessed separately. Each parent should use the calculator to obtain an estimated cost for their personal income and asset information. The total estimated net price to attend Harvard is the sum of the estimates for the two parents.

Remarried parents should separate their income and assets from the applicant’s step-parent’s income and assets. For assets where a clear separation isn’t obvious, please halve the value of these assets and include this value.

If you have additional questions about applying for financial aid, please reference our full list of Frequently Asked Questions or contact us.

What You Need

You should use your family's most recent year’s income and asset information (converted to U.S. dollars if applicable). We will only request tax forms and other financial documents to verify this information when you complete a financial aid application.

Net Price Calculator Form

Important: before you start.

Remember, this is not an application for financial aid . The calculator is simply a tool to estimate how much your family will need to contribute for one year at Harvard. You will be asked to provide personal information about your family, and finances. We do not save this information; it is only used within the calculator.

This calculator provides a good estimate, but it is not a guarantee of financial aid.

También se puede usar la calculadora en español.

Note to screen reader users:

As you fill out the form below, error messages in the form will be read aloud. Also, once you have completed the form, if you change any fields, your updated estimate will be read aloud.

Family Information

Every family is different and many of them are complex – something which is hard to capture in a calculator. Remember this is only an estimate, so enter information that best resembles your situation. Once you are admitted, we will work closely with you to fully understand your family's unique financial circumstances. If your parents are separated or divorced, each parent should fill out the calculator with their own information.

Instructions: Primary residence

We use this to determine your transportation allowance (done by state for US students, province for Canadian students and by world region for other international students).

Instructions: The number of people in your family

This includes your parent(s) and the number of dependent people in your household, including those in college.

Instructions: The number of children in college

You should enter the number of children who will be in college during the academic year, including you. If there will be more than one child enrolled in college, the calculator assumes that the additional child’s cost to your family is comparable to, or higher than, what you would pay to attend Harvard. (For example, if you select “2 in college” and the calculator estimates a Net Price of $15,000 for you, it is assuming that the second child’s cost to the family is $15,000 or more.)

Income Information

You should use your most recent year’s income information (converted to U.S. dollars if applicable). We will request tax forms and other financial documents to verify this information when you complete a financial aid application.

Instructions: Parent income/gross wages

This includes your total annual pre-tax earnings (including any voluntary retirement contributions such as Tax Deferred Accounts) from your wage statements. Do not include self-employment income or business income; include those amounts under business/farm income.

Instructions: Interest/dividend income

This includes your total taxed and untaxed interest and dividend income.

Instructions: Business/farm income

You should include total business or farm net income before adjusting for depreciation and/or losses. For US tax filers: business/farm income is normally found on Schedule(s) C and/or F. You should also examine each partnership or corporation (e.g. IRS forms 1120, 1120S or 1065) in which you have an interest. Harvard excludes depreciation expense and/or losses when calculating net business income.

Instructions: Real estate income

You should include net income from rental real estate activity before adjusting for depreciation and/or losses. For US tax filers, rental real estate activity is normally reported on Schedule E. Harvard excludes depreciation expense and/or losses when calculating net rental real estate income.

Instructions: Other income

You should include any other income not reported elsewhere. This often includes income from trusts, gifts, taxed and untaxed social security, child support received, alimony received, untaxed housing and food allowances, recurring (taxed and untaxed) pension withdrawals, disability payments, etc. (Note: We usually exclude capital losses from income, which is why a negative number may not be entered. Additionally, if your capital gain is not your regular source of income, but rather a one-time event, Harvard may elect to exclude it from income.)

Asset Information

Use the most recent year’s asset information, converted to U.S. dollars. We will request tax forms and other financial documents to verify this information when you complete a financial aid application.

Parent Assets

Instructions: cash and investments.

Cash: You should include all cash amounts - typically in savings and checking accounts. Investments: You should include the present value of stocks and bonds (excluding those held in traditional retirement accounts) but may also need to include more complex investments.

Instructions: Business/farm equity

This should represent the fair market value of your ownership share of any business or farm, less your share of any debts.

Instructions: Real estate equity (but not home equity)

This should represent the fair market value of your ownership share of any real estate (excluding your primary residence) not already reflected in the Business/Farm section, less your share of any debts.

Instructions: Other assets

Report the net value of any other asset not included elsewhere. This may include trusts, other non-rental real estate such as a vacation home, sibling assets, etc.

Student Assets

Instructions: student assets.

You should include all assets held in your name - do not include these elsewhere. If you are the beneficiary of a trust, include your share of the fair market value of the trust here.

Proactive AI Policy

Businesses should start self-regulating before government intervention, argue harvard professors..

At a May 7 conference, "Leading with AI," at Harvard Business School, many speakers argued that businesses will have to fundamentally shift how they approach labor, upskilling, marketing, and more in the age of AI. | MONTAGE ILLUSTRATION BY NIKO YAITANES/ HARVARD MAGAZINE ; PHOTOGRAPHS BY ADOBE STOCK, UNSPLASH

Artificial intelligence is developing faster than policymakers can keep up, and the gap in understanding between government and industry could pose challenges for effective regulation. But that doesn’t mean corporations should develop and deploy AI as they please until the government catches up, cautioned speakers discussing AI regulation at a May 7 “Leading with AI” conference at Harvard Business School (HBS). Instead, panelists urged businesses to take proactive steps in self-regulating and preparing for government regulation.

“You need disclosure through [a company] as things go wrong, and internal transparency that will prepare you for when the government starts to mandate transparency,” said Noah Feldman , Frankfurter professor of law (who advised on Facebook’s self-regulatory “oversight board”). “It’s coming. There’s never been a regulatory regime that hasn’t relied on transparency as one of its crucial tools.”

At the conference—presented by HBS Alumni Relations and the Harvard Digital Data Design Institute, a lab dedicated to the study of technology and business—many speakers argued that businesses will have to fundamentally shift how they approach labor, upskilling, marketing, and more in the age of AI. “This shift is not incremental,” said Fitzhugh professor of business administration Tsedal Neeley. “It’s not tweaking existing structures and processes. This is introducing radical changes, new systems, new processes, new structures.” HBS has committed to studying and preparing students for these changes, said Mitchell Weiss, MBA ’04, Menschel professor of management practice. Last fall, HBS became “maybe the only business school to require that every student have GPT Plus,” which provides access to ChatGPT’s most advanced model—“and we paid for it,” he said.

One of those fundamental shifts will take place in the relationship between business and technology, speakers at the conference said. As corporations make decisions about how to self-regulate and maintain records of AI usage and development, “we can no longer sit in business siloes,” said Anita Lynch, M.B.A. ’08, a board member for Nasdaq U.S. Exchanges. “You can’t be a business leader and not understand the technology anymore.”

Speakers also anticipated the form that government regulation might take. In a Bloomberg article last year, Feldman laid out possible approaches. The most extreme would be nationalization of the AI industry—a path few in the United States endorse. More moderate options, he continued, include criminal codes, statutory civil regulation, and administrative rules. In these more moderate paths forward, a separate regulatory agency overseeing AI is unlikely, he said at the conference: existing “regulatory agencies won’t just hand over their authority.” Instead, he foresees existing agencies taking over relevant areas of oversight.

Feldman also outlined an additional option: self-regulation by the industry. This option has already been pursued to some extent: in July 2023 , companies including Meta and Google voluntarily committed to AI safety standards—though there are “no hard gating factors to stop them from doing things differently,” Lynch said. Moving forward, she added, governmental regulation will set a “minimum standard”—but self-regulation and higher internal standards that companies can begin to establish now will remain important.

Lynch pointed to another technology that could provide guidance as regulators face the unknown. The Stanford computer scientist Andrew Ng has compared AI to electricity—and regulation in that industry is strict yet flexible as AI regulation should be, Lynch said. “It’s hard to think about the different ways [electricity] could be used or abused, but there are basic safety protocols,” she said. With AI, too, “There are industry-specific uses that are going to be tough to anticipate, and therefore to regulate. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t attempt to, and that doesn’t mean there’s no hope in trying to.”

Those attempts may require some experimentation—especially now, in the present era of little to no regulation. Bemis professor of international law and professor of computer science Jonathan Zittrain, faculty director of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society , floated policies that would encourage data collection and disclosure. For instance, Zittrain asked, how can the government incentivize disclosure of “something that’s not clearly illegal—because there hasn’t been time to identify and pass every conceivable protective law—but is a little dodgy?” If the corporation discloses that activity, he continued, “maybe that should occasion a cap for damages.” A policy like this shifts the incentives for the company: “I’m going to come forward, give society a chance to grapple with this, and I’ll be protected.”

Amid this experimentation, Lynch said, it’s important to educate policymakers so they have the foundations to make such decisions. “Despite initiatives trying to get more tech and product people” involved in government , “I don’t know that they’ll ever catch up. So we’ll have to come up with a mechanism that works in spite of the lack of supply,” she continued. “We’re going to have to educate people more.”

It’s necessary not only to decide on the exact form of regulation, but also the purpose, added Zittrain, who has taught a course on ethics and AI . “You have to have a destination, regulatorily speaking, in mind,” he said. “I don’t know if we do.” Currently, companies such as OpenAI “align” their models with human values during the training process to ensure that they don’t produce offensive or harmful outputs. If users ask ChatGPT how to commit a crime, for example, the bot is trained to respond “in a friendly but ultimately scolding voice” that it can’t provide that information, Zittrain said. But, he asked, are we sure such guardrails are necessary—and don’t conflict with free speech principles?

“I find myself worrying more about the fine-tuning of these models for safety than I do about the recondite uncertainty about what they’re going to say to begin with,” he said. “The process of alignment happens totally internally, and we don’t know—except for what [companies] choose to share—what that alignment looks like .”

Working through these questions should be a societal process, speakers said—not one confined to tech companies and Congress. And this process offers the chance to fundamentally shift how we think about regulating the Internet. Now, Zittrain said, our system is like a cocktail olive: a big green oval with a small portion of red; in other words, “everything not forbidden is permitted.” What if we swap that logic, he asked, and everything not permitted is prohibited?

As AI continues to progress, it’s important for regulators to keep big questions like this in mind alongside concerns about regulating specific technological advances. “From a regulator point of view,” Zittrain said, “figuring out how to…[keep] the wheels on the bus as the bus is roaring along, while also thinking about the map—that’s the important thing.”
