Mark Twain Entrance Exam Prep: Computer/Math and Science

Mark Twain for the Gifted & Talented (I.S. 239) and Bay Academy for the Arts & Sciences (I. S. 98) are prestigious intermediate schools located in Brooklyn. The admission into the schools requires students to choose up to two talents that they are the best in and take the exams on one day. The entrance exams are extremely competitive and take place from January to February.

COMPUTER / MATHEMATICS Overview

The exam consists of fifty multiple choice questions that features a math and a computer/internet component.

Thirty questions consist of complex multi-step mathematical problem solving, puzzle and logic questions, and pattern recognition. A thorough knowledge of K–5 math is assumed but questions go well beyond Common Core standards.

Twenty questions ask applicants to demonstrate knowledge of basic computer skills and vocabulary, Internet fluency, and familiarity with current technology issues. Applicant must demonstrate reading comprehension of a technical document. Additionally, there are some questions that analyze “potential” programming ability featuring logical, sequential and iterative thinking.

SCIENCE Overview

Applicants will be given a multiple choice test dealing with science concepts and facts covered in grades 4 and 5 in biology, earth science, physics and chemistry.

Topics in the questions include: scientific method, experimentation, analysis and graph interpretation, problem solving, developing scientific hypotheses and logical thinking. Usually science test consists of 100 multiple choice questions.

SchoolPlus offers full comprehensive preparation program for the Mark Twain computer/math and science exams.

Our Mark Twain Prep program includes:

(a) Math/Computer and Science classes once or twice a week

(b) Weekly Full Practice Test Sessions

During the Math/Computer and Science classes children learn the thorough and rigorous curriculum of Mathematics/Computers or/and Science depending on their talent choice.

In addition to subject-specific classes (Mark Twain Math/Computer and Mark Twain Science), SchoolPlus offers a unique opportunity to practice weekly full proctored exams for Computer/Math and Science talents in the format true to the actual test. P racticing the full tests under test-like conditions is an extremely important component of the Mark Twain exam prep. Such test-taking practice allows to find the gaps in knowledge and to develop the time-management skills. With thousands of students applying to Mark Twain and Bay Academy intermediate schools annually, and only about 10% being offered seats, more and more students are looking to increase their chances of getting into these schools.

SchoolPl us is the one of the first programs to offer Mark Twain Full Practice Test sessions as a separate course. Our students have consistently achieved impressive results. Over the years, at least 70% of SchoolPlus students who took Mark Twain testing course have successfully passed the exams.

PROPRIETARY MATERIALS and UNIQUE APPROACH

SchoolPlus offers proprietary materials that are based on years of experience and feedback from parents, students, and educators. We stay current with the latest testing changes and demands, and ensure that they are incorporated into our tests. As experts in the field, SchoolPlus goes above and beyond the test requirements by making sure our students truly understand the advanced material. As a result, the majority of our students are confident during the tests and perform extremely well.

While we run group classes, our step-by-step approach allows us to develop an individualized test-taking plan based on each student's needs. Over the duration of the course we get to know our students, understand their strong and weak areas, and each student's learning style. Even though SchoolPlus is unable to share its proprietary sample tests outside the classroom, we do provide eac h child with a detailed report indicating their strengths and weaknesses or any gaps on each topic.

During our weekly three-hour practice test sessions students take a full practice test similar to the real test they will take in January-February. The practice tests run 90 minutes and contain the 30 Math and 20 Computer questions for Computer/Math talent area and 100 questions for Science talent. The remaining time is dedicated to working through errors and developing test-taking strategies. Once compl eted, questions and answers are reviewed immediately after each test. Students receive an individualized detailed score report. Over the duration of the course we track our students' progress.

SchoolPlus administer Mark Twain prep classes from September until the end of January in Brooklyn and Staten Island locations. Weekly Practice Test sessions start in November when students become familiar with the advanced material. The Practice Test sessions run until the end of January.

Our Insights

What’s special.

Strong talent program

The Downside

Location, limited diversity

Long one of the city's most sought after middle schools, IS 239 Mark Twain offers demanding academics and high-quality talent programs to students from throughout Brooklyn and beyond.

While students arrive with test scores well above the city average and many go on to a Specialized High Schools, Twain admits children not on the basis of their standardized test scores or their grades but on their performance on a test or try-out in any one of 11 talent areas, ranging from sports to instrumental music to science.

Classes are composed of a mix of students with varying academic abilities in 6th grade, then divided more in the higher grades, as some children do honors and more advanced work. The school offers the algebra, Earth science and living environment Regents exams, as well as Spanish and Italian. A Department of Education report praised teachers for working to adjust material to match students of all academic levels. To help students cope with the school’s size, a cluster system, spanning different talents, divides the children into groups of about 150.

Since becoming principal in 2011 Karen Ditolla has worked to update and improve Twain’s 1930s building. The school has new labs, a black box theater, a mock courtroom that students use in a law and debate class, and coding labs intended to look more like the offices of Facebook or Google than a Coney Island classroom. After providing students with iPads, Twain has switched to equipping all its classrooms with more computers, such as laptops or Chrome books.

Noting that many of her students have strong basic academic skills, Ditolla says the key is to move them beyond the basics. “Our kids are very good compliance learners,” she says, “but they need to think and innovate and go out and showcase that.”

Over the years Mark Twain has struggled to maintain racial diversity. Originally a largely black school, it became a magnet school in 1975. By 1996 black parents were complaining their children were largely excluded from Twain. Today, the school is disproportionately white and Asian with fewer low-income students than other schools, although Ditolla says it is more mixed than many gifted and talented schools.

Special education: Twain has five small “self-contained” classes for students with special needs as well as two team teaching classes on each grade that have both general and special education students.

Admissions : Students from anywhere in New York City are eligible. Students applying to any of the seven arts-based talent programs must complete an audtion. The other four progams, including Athletics, Computer/Math, Creative Writing/Journalism, and Science, select students via a lottery. Check the school's website and the DOE's Middle Schools Auditions webpage for full details. (Gail Robinson, from interviews and web materials, March 2019; admissions updated August 2022)

An Overview of the IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to measure English proficiency for educational, vocational and immigration purposes. The IELTS measures an individual's ability to communicate in English across four areas of language: listening , reading , writing and speaking . The IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment at over 1,100 test centres and 140 countries. These test centres supervise the local administration of the test and recruit, train and monitor IELTS examiners.

IELTS tests are available on 48 fixed dates each year, usually Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays, and may be offered up to four times a month at any test centre, including Elektrostal' depending on local needs. Go to IELTS test locations to find a test centre in or nearby Elektrostal' and to check for upcoming test dates at your test centre.

Test results are available online 13 days after your test date. You can either receive your Test Report Form by post or collect it from the Test Centre. You will normally only receive one copy of the Test Report Form, though you may ask for a second copy if you are applying to the UK or Canada for immigration purposes - be sure to specify this when you register for IELTS. You may ask for up to 5 copies of your Test Report Form to be sent directly to other organisations, such as universities.

There are no restrictions on re-sitting the IELTS. However, you would need to allow sufficient time to complete the registration procedures again and find a suitable test date.
