Essay on My Father

English Essay Writing Topic – My Father

Parents have different roles in their children’s upbringing, and this is true for both parents. In a family, the father’s role is incredibly significant. He usually provides the household with their daily bread. He’s regarded as the family’s patriarch as well.    My father is a businessman. Although he has a strong commitment to his work, he never forces any of his kids to choose a similar career. We are inspired by him to pursue our aspirations. He constantly encourages us and serves as a mentor for us as we look for our areas of interest and passion in life. Instead of following in his entrepreneurial footsteps, he makes every effort to support us as we pursue our goals. My father is a very affectionate and kind man. In order to keep us in line, he might be severe at times. Every little need that we have is taken care of, and he is always there for all of us as a family to support us whether we face emotional or financial hardship. Every time we ask for his assistance, he is constantly striving to make us feel comfortable and has our best interests at heart.    He always attempts to be of assistance to us by sharing his life’s lessons or the morals that he has attained over the years. His life experiences and how he overcame them are always an inspiration to us. In order for us to grow, he not only shares his accomplishments with us but also his failings.    My favorite individual and my life’s inspiration is my father. My father is quite funny. He and I get along well. I discuss all my daily activities with him. When I need him, he always looks out for me and is there for me. He leads a calm, disciplined, and virtue-filled life and is a very straightforward individual. He manages to squeeze time with his family into his busy daily routine.    He plays badminton with me during our frequent joint games. Additionally, he does yoga and encourages leading a balanced, healthy lifestyle. For fun, he enjoys cooking. His creations include shahi paneer, rajma, and other such delicacies that I love to eat. He frequently makes our meals and packs our lunches, and always assists my mother in the kitchen.    My father has instilled in me the morals and manners that will serve me well in the future. He instructs us to practice humility and give to those in need. Not just me, but everyone around us, finds inspiration in my father. Along with being a good father, he is also a decent husband, a good son, and a nice person in general.    To sum up, my father is a gentleman who understands that when choosing between his family and his career, the former comes first. In addition, no matter what he is doing, he is always willing to assist others. Additionally, he says that money is not everything in life and one must not give up one’s ethics for it. Most importantly, we stick with him since he is the inspiration for all our good deeds. Mydad is my hero!   Recommended Read

He can be firm at times, but be rest assured it is always for the benefit of the children.

He always makes time to play with me and catch up on all the happenings in my life even after the hard work of the day.

My father is one man who is very unique and different. I always feel lucky anytime I remember that he is my father knowing how he has done the very best for me in life. I always feel grateful that I have the opportunity to be his son and be a part of a wonderful family that has a great father like him. My father has shown himself to be a very peaceful and polite person. He seldom scolds me and he is always easy with me. What he tries to do is that he makes sure that I realise the mistake that I have made in a very polite way and helps me to get better and this has been working like magic for many years now.

My father is the leader and head of our family. He is always there for every member of the family to help us in times when we need his advice and direction in taking decisions. Anytime we have a problem, we take it to him, he tries to help us by sharing some of the problems that he also faced in the past that are quite similar to our problem and how he was able to overcome them. He also shares all of his achievements and drawbacks in life and tells us to learn from them.

My father has his personal online marketing business but he never insists any of his children to pursue a career in that same field so that we can take over after him. He does not even try to attract any of us to his business but he tries to teach how we can discover our own passion and fields of interest in life. He does his best to encourage us in the pursuance of our various dreams. I can boldly say that my dad is a very good dad and this is not as a result of him always helping me and being nice to me but because he shows great strength, knowledge, a good helping and nice nature. He also owns very good human relations skills.

My father’s parents were very poor when he was growing up but with hard work and patience, my father was able to become very rich. He uses this as an example to encourage me to always work hard.

I share all of my happy, sad and bad moments with him and he also does the same. He is always around to share with me all of his life experiences and how I can learn from them. My father also tells me all about his day and every event that occurred during the day. He is doing all his best to ensure that I grow up to become a very successful person that has good character and behaviour.

My father always teaches me ethics, humanity and etiquettes of life that can help me in future. My father is always ready and willing to help the people who are needy around us and he tells us that giving is the most important thing in life. My father also teaches my siblings and me how to be happy, healthy and fit throughout our lives.

My father has shown himself to be very good to all the members of my extended family. If anyone of us is facing a particular problem, my father is usually the first person we go to for advice and help. My father has over the years proven to be a person who has a very kind heart and I can boldly say that he is my best friend and my hero.

About My Father:

Appa was born in Coimbatore, the second son and third child in a family of 11 children. His father, my grandfather was a stern man, a respected civil engineer who worked for the colonial British government.

Appa attended the Rishi Valley School in Yercaud, founded on the learning philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurthy. There he learned the value of discipline, respect for hard work, honesty, responsibility and constant learning. He studied electrical engineering at Banaras Hindu University and went on to join Voltas Limited’s air conditioning division. He worked there the rest of his life, and was regarded as brilliant and a genius.

My childhood memories of him are as a stern, strict and not very communicative man. He’d crack the most unhumorous Dad jokes and we’d all grimace and laugh dutifully.

He felt a deep and abiding sense of responsibility towards his own family of birth as well as his marital family. The modest salary he always earned would be divided between these two families, and since he was terrible at currying favour or promoting himself, he never rose within the ranks of Voltas and his income remained quite pathetic till he died. This officially made us a lower-middle class family and our childhoods were frugal, thrifty and austere. A little money meant a lot.

Despite these constraints, Appa planned our futures successfully. When his provident funds were released after his retirement, he used the entire amount, augmented by a bank loan, to buy a house in his two sons’ names. For the rest of our lives, we had a roof over our heads.

Why I like my father:

One of the most remarkable things about Appa was the number of things he was interested in. In Calcutta, he would spend hours outside a tailor’s shop watching him make clothes. After several months, he bought himself a Singer sewing machine. From then, all our clothes, including winter school uniforms, were stitched by him.

He taught himself carpentry — and constructed the sofa sets we used for decades.

He learned dry cleaning — and from then, we would go to school smelling of kerosene in winter.

He was an outstanding cook, and loved cooking. When my mother was immobilized with lymphatic TB, he’d cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family in the morning before leaving for work.

Best of all, he was a brilliant musician, gifted in playing the vichitra veena. He had his own Carnatic ‘band’ with a flutist and a mridangam player.

Things I Learned from My Father:

I have slowly realised how much of who I am was shaped by who he was. Like him, I never get bored, and remain fascinated by everything in life. I’m constantly active doing something constructive or educational. I am today two years younger than he was when he died but have started learning to play piano, understand search engine optimisation, UX design and painting.

I learned from him that generosity is a state of mind, not a state of wallet. The number of nameless, faceless poor people he had helped was long, as we learned only after he died. Never demeaning his beneficiaries with a handout, he invited them to repay at their time and speed, but made sure that they did, thus restoring their self-respect.

Without ever speaking about it, he has shown me what it means to be a father, and the meaning of selfless living.

A single incident sums up my relationship with my dad. He wanted me to join the IIT and become an engineer. I wanted to be a writer, a profession he disdained as having no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I stepped out of the train in which my family was relocating from Delhi to Bombay just as the whistle blew. I was bent on living my life my way.

My father, deeply upset, cut me off without a paisa, saying I could jolly well support myself if I was so confident about writing. And so I did, earning enough through writing for the evening papers to pay my rent, college fees and food. Six months later, my father, passing through Delhi in December, visited me to check how his strong-headed son was doing, and saw for himself that I was surviving well enough without borrowing or begging. He visibly swelled with pride.

He hugged me, in one action forgiving me but also forgiving himself. He used the 400 rupees he had received as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other basics.

From that day, he would proudly say, “My son followed his heart rather than my head — and see what a fine job he has done.”

Children still want to make their mothers and fathers proud. They seek emotional and physical comfort from their fathers in tough times and look to them for enforcing rules.

Fathers also help build a child’s self-esteem. My father has helped me to be proud of whom I am and stand up for what I believe. He has taught me to be true to myself. A father takes up all kinds of responsibility, from providing for the family to making sure that their children are safe.

Father’s Day is one such day to celebrate fatherhood and their influence on our lives. It is to thank our fathers for what they do for us every day. It falls in June, on the third Sunday. Father’s day will be celebrated on 21st June in 2020. Fathers are essential figures in our lives.

Essay on My Father in 500 Words

A father has a unique place in our hearts and lives. He is my protector, provider, and role model. In my entire life, my father has been playing all these roles without even complaining a single time or even without crying or getting upset. His only and foremost motivation is our smiling faces, fulfilled needs, and a decent lifestyle. He goes to work every morning and returns home in the evening with something to eat for us constantly without fail. My Father Essay in English is as follows:

A father’s love is frequently overlooked while talking about a mother’s love and affection. Everywhere, including in television shows and movies, there is frequent discussion of a mother’s love. But what we neglect to recognize is a father’s power, which frequently goes unrecognized. Not many people are blessed with fathers in their lives. Furthermore, it would be incorrect to imply that every parent serves as their children’s ideal hero, as this is untrue. But when it comes to being a perfect person, I can confidently testify for my father.

I share the desire for everyone to think their father is unique. But this conviction isn’t just a result of my affection for him; it’s also a result of the way he is. My father is very disciplined in all facets of life and has a business. He is the one who taught me to maintain discipline regardless of the type of work I undertake. Most significantly, even after 27 years of marriage, he still makes my mother giggle with his goofy antics. When he is with his loved ones, I cherish this funny side of him to the fullest. While he makes every effort to grant our requests, he can also be very stern when necessary.

The fact that my father has always maintained a really secure and open home environment is one of the things I appreciate most about him. For instance, my siblings and I don’t have to worry about getting in trouble or being judged when we talk to him about anything. This has prevented us from lying, which is something I frequently see among my friends. In addition, my father has a deep affection for animals and is highly understanding of their plight. He is extremely charitable as well as a devout follower of his religion. My desire to be like my father is heightened by the fact that I have never witnessed him act disrespectfully toward his elders.

My Father Essay

My Father Essay

I can state with pride that my father has served as my influence throughout my life. In other words, his viewpoint and character together have influenced the way I am. In a similar manner, he also has a significant influence on the globe in his own unique ways. He spends his free time caring for strays, which motivates me to do the same. My father has shown me what love is all about by giving my mother a rose every day without fail. This consistency and love inspires us all to treat them equally. I learned everything I know about automobiles and sports from my father. It is the only reason, really, that I hope to play cricket professionally in the future.

In conclusion, I think my father possesses all the qualities necessary to be referred to as a real-life superhero. I’m always amazed at how he balances his personal and business life. I saw my father became harder as a result of the difficult circumstances. I definitely want to emulate my father. I think my life would be in order if I could just inherit 10% of what he is.

Few people have fathers in their lives, which is a blessing. Furthermore, it would be false to say that all parents act as their children’s ideal role models. But I can absolutely vouch for my father in terms of being a perfect person. By bringing my mother a rose every single day without fail, my father has shown me what true love is all about. All of us are motivated to treat them equally by their constancy and devotion. My father taught me everything I know about cars and sports. Essay On My Father In English for Children and Students

Shaili Contractor

Key Points to Remember When Writing My Father Essay

10 lines on my father, a paragraph on my father, short essay on my father, long essay on my father, what will your child learn from the essay on my father.

Essay writing is an essential activity for the development of your child. Some of the most straightforward topics they can write about are their families, such as an essay on ‘My Father’. When your child writes an essay, they first think about all the points related to the topic. Then, they express those thoughts on paper in short and simple sentences. This develops their thinking process, helps them learn the basics of grammar, and improves their writing skills and creativity.

For a child, their father is often the most important person in their life, along with their mother. Therefore, the essay is bound to have a personal touch, which makes it more special. Here are a few pointers that kids in Classes 1, 2, and 3 can use to write an essay on ‘My Father’ and ensure their piece stands out.

Let us cover some main points that your child should consider while writing an essay on this topic:

  • The father’s name.
  • What the father does for a living.
  • What the father does at home.
  • How the father is with everyone at home.
  • How the father spends his off days.
  • The lessons the father gives the child.
  • The child’s bond with their father.

Besides the mother, the father is the most important person in a child’s life. The bond between a father and child is a very special one. Below are a few lines about ‘My Father’ for Class 1 and Class 2:

  • My father’s name is Mr XYZ.
  • He is a businessman.
  • He is very organised and clean.
  • He is very loving and kind.
  • He is also very disciplined.
  • My father is hardworking.
  • He loves animals.
  • He loves plants.
  • He is very helpful and cooperative.
  • He motivates me.

10 lines On My Father

When writing a composition about ‘My Father, ’ it is important to teach kids to gather the key points they want to convey and be able to present it as ‘A Paragraph About My Dad.’ Here is an example of how you can do it:

My father is a true hero and my best friend. He is a role model who always guides me on the right path. He is a hardworking individual who manages his office and family with ease. He is very intelligent and helps others with their problems. He is the head of our family and advises and instructs every family member. He is kind-hearted and always helps the needy people in the society. He teaches me the importance of time, etiquette, and humanity. I admire his politeness, gentleness, and love for his family. He is my inspiration and the person I look up to for guidance and support.

As mentioned earlier, the father is a significant member of every family, and the child observes everything the father does. So, how can a child express their observation about their father? Through an essay, of course. Here’s an example for you.

My father’s name is Mr XYZ. He owns a business. He is passionate about his work. He is a well-organised person. He is punctual. My father does yoga every morning. He keeps everything clean in the house. He respects everyone. He is very hardworking. He takes care of all of us in the family. My father loves animals and helps them. He helps poor people also. My father is very kind. He is active throughout the day. He is courageous. When he sees anything wrong, he speaks up. He is a strict follower of honesty. He has principles, and he follows them. My father is the pillar of support and strength for our family. He is always there for us. He teaches us good manners. He is jolly and makes us laugh, too. My father is a very good person.

Writing a long-form essay becomes easier for a child when they have a clear outline and all their key points organised. Once your child has followed the tips above, they can also try writing a long essay. Here’s an example of a ‘My Father’ essay in English:

My father’s name is Mr XYZ. He owns a business. He is very passionate about his work. My father is also extremely punctual and well-organised. He encourages my brother and me to maintain time. He shows us how to organise our clothes, books, and stationery. My father is an honest man. He gives us examples of how honesty is the best policy. My father is active throughout the day. He says that laziness is our enemy.

My father takes care of my mother, brother, and my grandparents. He respects every person, whether they are adults or children. He obeys our grandparents with so much respect. He says that they took great care of him when he was a child. So, now it is his turn to take care of them. He takes great care of our furry friend, Julie, too. My brother and I accompany my father every night when he feeds the strays in our community. He also gives grains to pigeons every morning. Sometimes, some cows pass by, and we feed them. He says that animals cannot seek help because they cannot speak. So, humans must help them. My father also distributes blankets to homeless people every winter.

My father loves plants. Last year, he encouraged us to collect seeds from all the mangoes we ate. Then, we balled them with mud and stored them in a sack in the corner of our garden. One day, my father took us on a long drive. We stopped at intervals and threw those seeds far away. My father says that some of these seeds will grow into trees one day.

My father is a simple man. He says it’s always good to live a simple life. He helps my brother and me with our studies. He always motivates us. He motivates my mother to do well in her business, too. He never scolds us if we don’t do well in an exam. Instead, he encourages us and says that we should always give our hundred per cent in the preparation, and after that, we should not be bothered about the results.

My father also often says that mistakes are lessons. We should always learn from them and not repeat them. He helps my mother with all the household chores. He also helps her in the kitchen.

My father makes delicious food. The steamed dumplings he makes are my favourite. Every weekend, he takes us for a picnic. My brother, Julie, and I have a lot of fun at the picnics. Whenever he gets time, he joins us when we play on our lawn. My father is our support system. My brother and I can discuss anything with him. He doesn’t scold us. He told us not to do something politely if we did anything we shouldn’t do. My father is my superhero. I love my father.

Essay writing is an activity that will help your child in the long run. It will develop many faculties in your child. When your child is asked to write an essay on their dad, they will first think about the points they want to write. Then, they will put those thoughts on paper in short and simple sentences. Writing a composition on ‘My Father’ will help the child understand the value of their father more prominently. So, writing a descriptive essay about their father becomes a very special activity for the child.

Essay writing will help your child even in later academic years. When your child starts writing compositions from an early age, they develop better writing skills. This is very beneficial for the child. When writing an essay on ‘My Father’, the child will reflect on their bond with their father and the many things their father does to make their life better. Encourage your little one to write a short or long paragraph on this topic which is always so special for a child.

My Father essay in English | Essay on [Dad my Hero]

Father is an important character in every child's life. We call him by different names, but our dad is a true hero of our life. Today I have come up with an essay on My Father in which I have told about my father, so let's get started with the essay.

vector image of son and father used for essay on my father in english

When we have to say something about father there is not much we speak about him, but in the  mother's case, the scenario is very different. Everyone has a lot of things to speak about her. Why is this so, does our father does nothing for us? a thought comes to our mind. So let's think about our father..!.

My father's name is Vasant. Everyone calls their father by different names like Father, Papa, and dad. I call my father dad. If I have to introduce my father, then he is just like all of our fathers very strict, and like you I also fear him a lot.

But wait whenever we think about anybody's father we always think of a very strict and disciplined person but is it so?. Like our mother, our father is also a soft-hearted person who loves us very much but we don't realize it. Because from childhood itself we get fear of dad as if we do something our mother always tells us that she will tell it to father and he will scold us, and so we fear so much to our father.

Everyone likes and loves their mother very much as we share every problem with our mother first, and if we need something we ask it from our mother without any fear of her. But when it comes to father then things change we even fear to speak to him, and asking for a thing from him becomes impossible.

This is because from childhood itself we start getting fear of dad, as our mother scolds us each time with the name of the father. Mother always tells if you will not do your homework she will tell it to father and he will scold you, and this thing unknowingly creates fear of dad among us. But is our father really that fierce-full?.

Definitely not, our father loves us a lot, but he doesn't show it directly to us. During any occasion of a festival like Diwali father takes us for shopping and gives whichever clothes we want he never says no, even if he doesn't have enough budget he will not take new clothes for himself but he will give what we want, it is because he loves and care of us then himself. Father always adjusts himself and always comforts us no matter what is the situation.

Father always thinks of our future, it is true that he sometimes scolds us but it is just because he wants us to be good in our lives and be successful people. If someday we are not feeling good our father will not sleep at night and keeping thinking about us as he cares for us very much.

Father works hard for his entire life just for us because he wants to make us successful person so he fulfills our every need. He doesn't care for himself but take care of us and gives us everything we need, this is how really our father is. I love my father very much, my hero is my dad.

Friends do you fear your father and what do you think about your father? do tell us in the comment section below.

This essay on father can be used by students of class 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th for their educational purpose. And this essay can also be used on the topics given below.

Story Behind Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a holiday dedicated to honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of Fathers in society. Today, Father’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, often with similar sentiments of appreciation and recognition for the role of fathers. The specific customs and dates of the celebrations can vary, but the core intent remains to honor and acknowledge the contributions and significance of fathers.

The first known Father’s Day service occurred on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia, after a mining accident that killed 361 men. Grace Golden Clayton suggested a day to honor fathers, especially those who died in the disaster. However, this event did not result in a recurring celebration.

Sonora Smart Dodd

The modern version of Father’s Day is largely credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Inspired by the success of Mother’s Day, which was officially recognized in 1914, Dodd wanted to establish a similar day to honor fathers. Her own father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran who single-handedly raised six children after the death of his wife. Dodd proposed June 5, her Father’s birthday, as the date for Father’s Day. However, due to logistical issues, the first Father’s Day in Spokane was celebrated on June 19, 1910.

Early Growth

The idea of Father’s Day slowly gained popularity. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson spoke at a Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, expressing his support for the holiday.

Despite these early endorsements, it took many decades for Father’s Day to become an official national holiday. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.

Fathers Day Speech in English

Good morning/afternoon everyone,

Today, we are gathered here to celebrate a very special person in our lives—our fathers. Fathers Day is a wonderful opportunity to express our love, gratitude, and appreciation for everything our fathers do for us. Our dads are our role models, our protectors, and our best friends. They work tirelessly to provide for us, guide us through life’s challenges, and teach us important lessons that shape who we are. On this Fathers Day, let’s take a moment to thank our dads for their endless love and support. Thank you, and happy Fathers Day!

Long Speech on Fathers Day in English

Today, we gather to celebrate one of the most special and influential figures in our lives—our fathers. Fathers Day is not just a day on the calendar; it’s a moment to pause and reflect on the incredible impact our fathers have had on us, often in ways we may not even realize.

Dad, when I think about everything you’ve done for me, my heart fills with gratitude. From my earliest memories, you’ve been there—sometimes in the background, quietly ensuring everything is okay, and sometimes right by my side, cheering me on. You’ve been my protector, my teacher, my mentor, and my friend. You’ve taught me lessons that no classroom could ever provide: the value of hard work, the importance of integrity, and the strength that comes from kindness.

I remember the times when I fell down, both literally and metaphorically, and you were always there to pick me up, dust me off, and set me on the right path again. You never let me feel like I was alone in facing life’s challenges. Your words of wisdom and your steady presence have been my guiding light. Even when life got tough, you faced it with a resilience that taught me to never give up.

But Dad, it’s not just the big things that have made a difference—it’s the little things, too. The way you would stay up late helping me with a school project, or how you always seemed to know when I needed a hug or a reassuring word. The way you’ve sacrificed your own comfort to ensure that I have everything I need, often without me even noticing. It’s these quiet acts of love and selflessness that have shaped who I am today.

There were times when I may not have said it enough, or at all, but I want you to know that I’ve always noticed and appreciated everything you’ve done for me. You’ve shown me what it means to be strong, yet gentle; firm, yet understanding. You’ve given me the confidence to pursue my dreams and the courage to face my fears.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize just how much you’ve done for our family. The late nights, the early mornings, the endless responsibilities you’ve shouldered—all without complaint. You’ve been our rock, and I can’t thank you enough for all the sacrifices you’ve made. Your unwavering support has been my greatest blessing, and I hope I can be even half the person you are.

Today, on Father’s Day, I want to take this moment to tell you just how much you mean to me. You are not just my father; you are my hero. I am who I am because of you, and for that, I am forever grateful. I hope you know how much you are loved, appreciated, and cherished—not just today, but every day.

I love you more than words can ever express. Happy Father’s Day, Dad.

Fathers Day Speech from Daughter

Today is a special day, and I want to take this moment to tell you how much you mean to me. Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the love, care, and strength that you’ve given me throughout my life. But for me, every day is a reminder of just how lucky I am to have you as my dad.

From the time I was little, you’ve been my hero. You’ve held my hand through the toughest times, always ready with a smile or a hug when I needed it most. You’ve been my protector, my guide, and my biggest cheerleader. No matter what, I’ve always known that I could count on you, and that has given me more comfort and confidence than I can ever express.

I remember the bedtime stories you used to tell me, the ones that filled my dreams with magic and adventure. But more than the stories, it was the sound of your voice, so full of love, that made me feel safe and cherished. As I grew older, those stories turned into life lessons—lessons about honesty, kindness, and never giving up. You’ve taught me the importance of working hard, standing up for what’s right, and always believing in myself.

Dad, you’ve been my rock, the one who kept me steady when everything else seemed uncertain. You’ve sacrificed so much to make sure I had everything I needed, often putting my happiness above your own. I’ve seen you work long hours, come home tired, yet still make time to ask me about my day, to help me with my homework, or just to sit with me and talk about life.

There are no words that can truly capture how much I love you and how grateful I am for everything you’ve done for me. You’ve been my role model, showing me what it means to be strong yet gentle, firm yet loving. You’ve shown me that real strength comes from the heart and that true love is unconditional.

On this Father’s Day, I want you to know that I see all the little things you do, the things that often go unnoticed. I see the way you put our family first, the way you silently worry about us, the way you celebrate our successes and support us through our failures. I see how much you care, and it fills my heart with so much love and respect for you.

Dad, you are my hero, not because you’ve done extraordinary things, but because you’ve always been there for me, no matter what. You’ve made me feel like I can achieve anything, and for that, I am forever grateful.

Thank you for being the best dad a daughter could ever ask for. I hope you know how much you are loved, not just today, but every single day. You are my world, and I love you more than words can say.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad.

Scholarships, ways to give, research & reports, from venezuela to the naval academy with the help of an education choice scholarship.

RIVERVIEW – Rosa Salom Garcia’s car was reinforced to withstand bullets because the threat of being kidnapped was a part of everyday life in Venezuela.

She was a leading eye surgeon in her native Caracas with a practice spread over multiple locations in the city. Her daughter, Maria Castillo Salom, attended private school.

Life was great until it wasn’t.

Until the political climate became volatile in the mid-2010s, with the government confiscating some of Rosa’s offices. Until kidnappings of citizens who could pay huge ransoms were commonplace. Rosa feared for her safety as well as Maria’s.

“All I wanted to do in life I did,” Rosa said. “My life became Maria’s life.”

So, in the summer of 2017, mother and daughter moved to Riverview, east of Tampa. Rosa gave up her medical practice and left her family for a safer, better future for Maria.

“She never said, ‘I did this all for you,’ but I knew,” Maria said. “I knew all the sacrifices she had made. She left her whole life behind, and my main goal was to make her proud.”

Maria, who arrived in time for the seventh grade, continued her private school education with the help of a Florida Tax Credit Scholarship , which is funded by corporate donations to Step Up For Students .

Maria finished elementary school at nearby St. Stephens Catholic Schoo l, then attended Tampa Catholic High School , where she graduated in 2023 third in her class with a 4.0 GPA and an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

“We’re forever grateful for Step Up,” said Gabriel Casas Diaz, Rosa’s husband and Maria’s stepfather. “Without Step Up’s help, Maria won’t be where she is right now.”

That first year at St. Stephens was not easy for Maria, now 20. An honor roll student in Caracas, Maria had little trouble in science and math, because two plus two equals four in any language. But her English was limited, and she struggled with American History. The smaller classes at her new school provided the right educational setting, because teachers could take the time to work with Maria. They knew she was a bright student, and they were determined to help her succeed.

They explained assignments during class and tutored her afterwards.

“I had teachers who were truly devoted to me,” Maria said. “Honestly, I took up a lot of their time.”

Attending a Catholic school in her new home offered some much-needed familiarity with her faith as she adjusted to the move to a new country.

“It was really good to be connected to my faith,” she said. “It was a difficult move. My father is still in Venezuela. So is my extended family.”

In the eighth grade, Maria wrote an essay about the life she left behind. She didn’t leave anything out. She wrote about the violence, the poverty, the never-ending fear for her family’s safety. The essay was for a contest where the winner received a $10,000 scholarship toward high school. Maria finished second.

But her essay was forwarded to the administration at Tampa Catholic. Maria was asked to apply and was accepted. The essay earned her a Mary Neary Scholarship from her new school. That coupled with a scholarship from the Diocese of St. Petersburg for her grades and the FTC scholarship enabled Rosa to afford Tampa Catholic.

“I am eternally grateful for the (Florida Tax Credit) scholarship, for allowing me to make it through,” Maria said.

Maria found the teachers at Tampa Catholic as helpful and encouraging as those at St. Stephens. It wasn’t long before she was taking AP classes. She studied French and became president of the French National Honor Society. She took six math classes and continued her education during the summer though Florida Virtual School.

She recorded more than 200 community service hours from volunteering at Feeding Tampa Bay and the Humane Society of Tampa Bay . She played three years of soccer, stopping as a senior only because her courseload was too demanding.

When asked during her junior year by Tampa Catholic’s college counselor about her college plans, Maria answered with the three words: The Naval Academy.

Somewhat stunned, the counselor suggested the University of Notre Dame as a safe school, where she could join its Navy ROTC. But Maria had her eyes set on the Naval Academy, which could lead to a career in the Marines or the FBI.

Gabriel retired after nearly 29 years as a Marine, and Maria likes the camaraderie he has with fellow Marines, those he’s known for a long time and those he just met. It’s “Oorah” and an instant bond.

Maria, who became a U.S. citizen in 2020 along with Rosa, received the acceptance email from the Academy on March 31 of her senior year. She already had been accepted to Notre Dame and the University of Florida.

She had just finished taking an AP biology exam when she noticed the email alert on her Apple Watch. She was excused from class and called her mom with the news. They both cried.

“My mother, she’s my role model,” Maria said. “I had to make her sacrifice worth it.”

Rosa has changed careers since moving to the United States. She earned a liberal arts degree at Hillsborough Community College and is a certified mental health counselor, working with immigrants.

“I really appreciate all that this country made for Maria, for us in general,” Rosa said. “She has a great opportunity. Maria’s future would be different if she remained in Venezuela. Totally different worlds.”

Maria loves her new world.

“I feel like the United States opened its heart and to us and I've just been so grateful,” she said. “It certainly is amazing. I don't think it could be a better place in the world, and that's kind of the reason I'm serving the country, to show I’m so grateful to it.”

As a Teenager in Europe, I Went to Nudist Beaches All the Time. 30 Years Later, Would the Experience Be the Same?

Image may contain Princess Antonia of Luxembourg Sandro Botticelli Art Painting Adult Person and Wedding

In July 2017, I wrote an article about toplessness for Vogue Italia. The director, actor, and political activist Lina Esco had emerged from the world of show business to question public nudity laws in the United States with 2014’s Free the Nipple . Her film took on a life of its own and, thanks to the endorsement from the likes of Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevingne, and Willow Smith, eventually developed into a whole political movement, particularly on social media where the hashtag #FreeTheNipple spread at lightning speed. The same year as that piece, actor Alyssa Milano tweeted “me too” and encouraged others who had been sexually assaulted to do the same, building on the movement activist Tarana Burke had created more than a decade earlier. The rest is history.

In that Vogue article, I chatted with designer Alessandro Michele about a shared memory of our favorite topless beaches of our youth. Anywhere in Italy where water appeared—be it the hard-partying Riviera Romagnola, the traditionally chic Amalfi coast and Sorrento peninsula, the vertiginous cliffs and inlets of Italy’s continuation of the French Côte d’Azur or the towering volcanic rocks of Sicily’s mythological Riviera dei Ciclopi—one was bound to find bodies of all shapes and forms, naturally topless.

In the ’90s, growing up in Italy, naked breasts were everywhere and nobody thought anything about it. “When we look at our childhood photos we recognize those imperfect breasts and those bodies, each with their own story. I think of the ‘un-beauty’ of that time and feel it is actually the ultimate beauty,” Michele told me.

Indeed, I felt the same way. My relationship with toplessness was part of a very democratic cultural status quo. If every woman on the beaches of the Mediterranean—from the sexy girls tanning on the shoreline to the grandmothers eating spaghetti al pomodoro out of Tupperware containers under sun umbrellas—bore equally naked body parts, then somehow we were all on the same team. No hierarchies were established. In general, there was very little naked breast censorship. Free nipples appeared on magazine covers at newsstands, whether tabloids or art and fashion magazines. Breasts were so naturally part of the national conversation and aesthetic that Ilona Staller (also known as Cicciolina) and Moana Pozzi, two porn stars, cofounded a political party called the Love Party. I have a clear memory of my neighbor hanging their party’s banner out his window, featuring a topless Cicciolina winking.

A lot has changed since those days, but also since that initial 2017 piece. There’s been a feminist revolution, a transformation of women’s fashion and gender politics, the absurd overturning of Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction in New York, the intensely disturbing overturning of Roe v Wade and the current political battle over reproductive rights radiating from America and far beyond. One way or another, the female body is very much the site of political battles as much as it is of style and fashion tastes. And maybe for this reason naked breasts seem to populate runways and street style a lot more than they do beaches—it’s likely that being naked at a dinner party leaves more of a permanent mark than being naked on a glamorous shore. Naked “dressing” seems to be much more popular than naked “being.” It’s no coincidence that this year Saint Laurent, Chloé, Ferragamo, Tom Ford, Gucci, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, and Valentino all paid homage to sheer dressing in their collections, with lacy dresses, see-through tops, sheer silk hosiery fabric, and close-fitting silk dresses. The majority of Anthony Vaccarello’s fall 2024 collection was mostly transparent. And even off the runway, guests at the Saint Laurent show matched the mood. Olivia Wilde appeared in a stunning see-through dark bodysuit, Georgia May Jagger wore a sheer black halter top, Ebony Riley wore a breathtaking V-neck, and Elsa Hosk went for translucent polka dots.

In some strange way, it feels as if the trends of the ’90s have swapped seats with those of today. When, in 1993, a 19-year-old Kate Moss wore her (now iconic) transparent, bronze-hued Liza Bruce lamé slip dress to Elite Model Agency’s Look of the Year Awards in London, I remember seeing her picture everywhere and feeling in awe of her daring and grace. I loved her simple sexy style, with her otherworldly smile, the hair tied back in a bun. That very slip has remained in the collective unconscious for decades, populating thousands of internet pages, but in remembering that night Moss admitted that the nude look was totally unintentional: “I had no idea why everyone was so excited—in the darkness of Corinne [Day’s] Soho flat, the dress was not see-through!” That’s to say that nude dressing was usually mostly casual and not intellectualized in the context of a larger movement.

But today nudity feels loaded in different ways. In April, actor and author Julia Fox appeared in Los Angeles in a flesh-colored bra that featured hairy hyper-realist prints of breasts and nipples, and matching panties with a print of a sewn-up vagina and the words “closed” on it, as a form of feminist performance art. Breasts , an exhibition curated by Carolina Pasti, recently opened as part of the 60th Venice Biennale at Palazzo Franchetti and showcases works that span from painting and sculpture to photography and film, reflecting on themes of motherhood, empowerment, sexuality, body image, and illness. The show features work by Cindy Sherman, Robert Mapplethorpe, Louise Bourgeois, and an incredible painting by Bernardino Del Signoraccio of Madonna dell’Umiltà, circa 1460-1540. “It was fundamental for me to include a Madonna Lactans from a historical perspective. In this intimate representation, the Virgin reveals one breast while nurturing the child, the organic gesture emphasizing the profound bond between mother and child,” Pasti said when we spoke.

Through her portrayal of breasts, she delves into the delicate balance of strength and vulnerability within the female form. I spoke to Pasti about my recent musings on naked breasts, which she shared in a deep way. I asked her whether she too noticed a disparity between nudity on beaches as opposed to the one on streets and runways, and she agreed. Her main concern today is around censorship. To Pasti, social media is still far too rigid around breast exposure and she plans to discuss this issue through a podcast that she will be launching in September, together with other topics such as motherhood, breastfeeding, sexuality, and breast cancer awareness.

With summer at the door, it was my turn to see just how much of the new reread on transparency would apply to beach life. In the last few years, I noticed those beaches Michele and I reminisced about have grown more conservative and, despite being the daughter of unrepentant nudists and having a long track record of militant topless bathing, I myself have felt a bit more shy lately. Perhaps a woman in her 40s with two children is simply less prone to taking her top off, but my memories of youth are populated by visions of bare-chested mothers surveilling the coasts and shouting after their kids in the water. So when did we stop? And why? When did Michele’s era of “un-beauty” end?

In order to get back in touch with my own naked breasts I decided to revisit the nudist beaches of my youth to see what had changed. On a warm day in May, I researched some local topless beaches around Rome and asked a friend to come with me. Two moms, plus our four children, two girls and two boys of the same ages. “Let’s make an experiment of this and see what happens,” I proposed.

The kids all yawned, but my friend was up for it. These days to go topless, especially on urban beaches, you must visit properties that have an unspoken nudist tradition. One of these in Rome is the natural reserve beach at Capocotta, south of Ostia, but I felt a bit unsure revisiting those sands. In my memory, the Roman nudist beaches often equated to encounters with promiscuous strangers behind the dunes. I didn’t want to expose the kids, so, being that I am now a wise adult, I went ahead and picked a compromise. I found a nude-friendly beach on the banks of the Farfa River, in the rolling Sabina hills.

We piled into my friend’s car and drove out. The kids were all whining about the experiment. “We don’t want to see naked mums!” they complained. “Can’t you just lie and say you went to a nudist beach?”

We parked the car and walked across the medieval fairy-tale woods until we reached the path that ran along the river. All around us were huge trees and gigantic leaves. It had rained a lot recently and the vegetation had grown incredibly. We walked past the remains of a Roman road. The colors all around were bright green, the sky almost fluorescent blue. The kids got sidetracked by the presence of frogs. According to the indications, the beach was about a mile up the river. Halfway down the path, we bumped into a couple of young guys in fanny packs. I scanned them for signs of quintessential nudist attitude, but realized I actually had no idea what that was. I asked if we were headed in the right direction to go to “the beach”. They nodded and gave us a sly smile, which I immediately interpreted as a judgment about us as mothers, and more generally about our age, but I was ready to vindicate bare breasts against ageism.

We reached a small pebbled beach, secluded and bordered by a huge trunk that separated it from the path. A group of girls was there, sharing headphones and listening to music. To my dismay they were all wearing the tops and bottoms of their bikinis. One of them was in a full-piece bathing suit and shorts. “See, they are all wearing bathing suits. Please don’t be the weird mums who don’t.”

At this point, it was a matter of principle. My friend and I decided to take our bathing suits off completely, if only for a moment, and jumped into the river. The boys stayed on the beach with full clothes and shoes on, horrified. The girls went in behind us with their bathing suits. “Are you happy now? my son asked. “Did you prove your point?”

I didn’t really know what my point actually was. I think a part of me wanted to feel entitled to those long-gone decades of naturalism. Whether this was an instinct, or as Pasti said, “an act that was simply tied to the individual freedom of each woman”, it was hard to tell. At this point in history, the two things didn’t seem to cancel each other out—in fact, the opposite. Taking off a bathing suit, at least for my generation who never had to fight for it, had unexpectedly turned into a radical move and maybe I wanted to be part of the new discourse. Also, the chances of me going out in a fully sheer top were slim these days, but on the beach it was different. I would always fight for an authentic topless experience.

After our picnic on the river, we left determined to make our way—and without children—to the beaches of Capocotta. In truth, no part of me actually felt very subversive doing something I had been doing my whole life, but it still felt good. Once a free breast, always a free breast.
