Explore effective presentation slide design for educators. Guidelines and examples demonstrate how presentation slides can be enhanced for professional, clear and engaged learning in face-to-face and online classes.

In this module, you’ll learn practical techniques to design effective presentations for face to face and online contexts. Self-paced sections include the need for better design, flow and emphasis, use of text and colours for accessibility, images and animation, copyright and the MQ design context.

PowerPoint is a key ‘tool of the trade’ for delivery of classes in person and online at Macquarie University. Poor slide design adversely impacts the ability of the presenter to deliver a clear and informative message and thus the ability of an audience to fully engage with the delivery. This is especially so for audience members who rely heavily on the presentation’s visual component (e.g. because they have an ESL background or are hearing impaired), as well as those with poor eyesight.

Well designed PowerPoint slides portray a professional, polished, accomplished, and authoritative educator, and enhance the student learning experience. In this module you will learn how to improve the visual clarity of your presentation material.

You asked, we answer: Shared ID and the new brand campaign

brand-faqs_web

James Barrow, Creative Director in Group Marketing

Last month saw the launch of the University’s new brand campaign – a major milestone for the Shared Identity project. We asked James Barrow, Creative Director in the Group Marketing team, to answer some of the questions staff have been asking about the campaign.

What is ‘shared identity’.

Shared Identity (or ‘Shared ID’) is an ongoing project that aims to improve Macquarie’s relevance and distinctiveness in the higher education sector. Stage 1 of the project – launched in 2014 – saw the establishment of Macquarie’s new logo and visual identity.

Why did we need a stage two of Shared Identity?

A successful brand needs to be regularly tested and refined to ensure it continues to be relevant to its audiences. Our extensive market research revealed that Macquarie needed to more clearly articulate its position as an innovative university that delivers outcomes and impact, in a way that both differentiates us from our competitors and that is relevant to our many target audiences. By doing this we will become the preferred choice for more students, staff, researchers and industry partners.

What is actually changing with Shared ID 2.0?

Following quantitative and qualitative market research across all our external and internal audiences, we developed a new brand narrative that will help us better articulate our strengths to our various audiences and help us tie all our marketing activities together.

What is our ‘brand narrative’?

A brand narrative (also sometimes referred to as a ‘ brand proposition’ ) defines what an institution stands for and usually expresses how the brand meets its target audience’s needs and how it is differentiated from competitors, so the audience has a clear reason to choose the brand.

The short-form version of Macquarie’s new brand narrative is: “Macquarie is a vibrant university engaged with the real world. We foster collaboration across diverse fields of knowledge and human perspectives, pursuing innovative ways to address society’s complex problems and create a better future.”

A long-form version of the narrative can be found in section 1.2.6 of our brand guidelines .

What is a ‘brand essence’?

A brand essence is a distillation of the brand narrative, capturing what an institution stands for in just a few words.  A brand essence differs from a tagline in that it’s not used externally – rather, it is used internally to inform and bring consistency to marketing activities.

Our new brand essence is ‘connected intelligence’ , reflecting Macquarie’s unique position in the higher education sector. While some universities celebrate innovation through technology, we are the university of human-powered innovation – innovation that is brought to life through collaboration and connectivity, and that seeks solutions for real-world challenges.

What is a ‘brand campaign’?

A brand campaign is an external-facing series of advertising and marketing activities that brings a brand narrative to life and motivates audiences to find out more . Macquarie’s brand campaign centres around the equation ( YOU) us (or ‘You to the power of us’) – a human equation for success. It highlights the power of human collaboration and our belief that when we all work together, we multiply our ability to achieve remarkable things.

Is our logo changing?

No, our logo and visual identity (including our brand colours and fonts) remain unchanged.

Should I be putting ‘(YOU) us ’ or ‘connected intelligence’ on my newsletter/flyer/website etc?

No. All ‘(YOU) us ’ brand campaign activities (including a specific recruitment campaign highlighting Macquarie’s priority courses) are being managed by Group Marketing, in consultation with the faculties.

‘Connected Intelligence’ should not be used on external-facing material, though we welcome ideas from staff about how their work demonstrates this concept. Staff can use the Suggest a story form to alert the Group Marketing team to these ideas, or they can contact their relevant portfolio partner .

Where can I find the brand guidelines?

The current brand guidelines are available on the Group Marketing team’s website. The site also provides branded templates (including Word and PowerPoint), as well as a style guide that outlines the correct spelling and format of commonly used terms.

Have any of the branded templates changed?

There are new versions of some templates – they won’t look different to the previous templates, but do contain some bug fixes.

How can I make sure my material is brand compliant?

All material that features the Macquarie brand should be emailed to [email protected] for a brand compliance check prior to publishing. You can learn  more about brand compliance on our website.

Does Group Marketing provide any training for creating branded material?

Aside from the advice provided on our website, we run various workshops on good marketing practice through the year. Staff should contact their relevant portfolio partner if they have a specific training need for their team and we’ll do our best to accommodate it.

I like the idea it promotes, however as a student (now PhD), I don’t think it has the same level of engagement as the Western Sydney University “Be Inspired” campaign. I also found the notion of (You)^us quite dehumanising at first, as it originally made me think that the university just thought of everyone as numbers.

It would also be good to know which of the groups targeted by the market research phase was most positive to the campaign. For example if it was students then that would bode well for the universities future, but if it was corporate interests then that would deviate, in my opinion, from the founding principles of the university as I know them.

Quite obviously I hope the campaign is successful and trust the university has made the right call because when the university succeeds we all benefit.

HI Anthony, we suggest you contact James by email ([email protected]) to see if he can give you some further information on the market testing of this campaign.

One of the problems with identirying Macquarie is in overseas presentations. People in, say, the US have no idea where “Macquarie Unive4rsity” is (unlike, say, the University of Sydney or University of Melbourne etc., which are geographically self-explanatory). You need to add “, Sydney” at least, and probably add , “Australia” too.

Theses @ Macquarie University

About this guide

Macquarie University Theses Collection  is the open-access digital collection of the University’s research and scholarly output. It contains digital versions of Macquarie University higher degree theses deposited with the Library.

This Guide will explain how to submit your thesis to the digital collection and highlights copyright questions to consider.

Theses formats at Macquarie

The Library holds copies of Macquarie theses for PhD, professional doctorates, masters and MRes in print, microfilm or digital formats. Limited honours theses are collected on advice of the Faculty. Submission of print theses is no longer required by the University.

Theses available in print only are located in the Library's Thesis Collection. Access to the Thesis Collection is restricted, and items must be used under supervision. For more information see our  Theses Finding guide .

Mandatory submission of digital theses commenced in 2011.  Macquarie University Theses  collection contains digital versions of Macquarie University higher degree theses deposited with the Library. Records of the Macquarie University theses are also searchable in  MultiSearch .

Benefits and potential issues

What are the benefits of submitting a digital copy of my thesis.

A digital thesis:

has a greater potential readership than a thesis stored in hard copy; it is accessible in any country at any time of the day.

is cited more often than a hard copy version and has a greater research impact.

is protected from destruction by disasters such as fire or flood because it is stored in Macquarie University Theses's secure digital environment.

Why should the Library keep a digital version of my thesis?

The Library uses commercial software that is specifically designed for storing digital objects. It has the following advantages over other options like a personal website:

Availability  – a thesis in the Library’s repository is sent to other repositories such as  Trove ,  Google Scholar , NDLTD and  OAISTER  and is more accessible to academic searches. The thesis is assigned a persistent identifier so that a link to the thesis will always be current and resolvable.

Preservation and security  – specific preservation and metadata standards are adhered to so the digital objects can be viewed well into the future and are easily migrated to new systems with no data loss. A comprehensive data protection policy will also protect the thesis to ensure backup and security. Storing your electronic thesis outside the repository may make it more vulnerable to loss or tampering.

Access rights  – the ability to view or hide the thesis in a repository can be tightly controlled.

Document presentation  – the repository can deliver additional viewing tools to enhance the viewing of the thesis. It can also create various relationships between digital objects such as images, video and sound files to create an enriched presentation.

Searching  – the repository has powerful database indexes created from standardised metadata and full-text extraction. This allows full-text searching and controlled searching similar to a library catalogue. The search results can be sorted, limited and emailed in a citation format.

State of the art systems  – the repository will be upgraded regularly with new developments to ensure that all of the above features are continually enhanced.

Who can make a copy of my thesis?

Except where an exemption has been granted, macquarie university requires that any thesis deposited with the library be immediately available for use..

Under existing copyright conditions and deposit arrangements, the Library is able to make a copy of a thesis, in whole or in part, if an individual requests this for the purposes of research, criticism or review. Copying limits will be determined by relevant copyright regulations or embargo conditions.

For further information about access to your thesis, contact [email protected]

Confirmation of candidature

Information on thesis proposal.

Graduate research students are required to develop and present a thesis proposal as part of their Confirmation of Candidature process.

The Confirmation of Candidature is a process requiring graduate research students to develop a formal thesis proposal in the first six to eight months of candidature (or part-time equivalent) and present to a panel of experts.

This is a requirement of continuation of candidature at Macquarie and involves the submission of a proposal, presentation to a panel, oral discussion and defence of the proposal. Exact requirements will vary by department and may involve follow-up activities if necessary.

While preparing your proposal, we would also recommend that you use the Authorship Planning Form to have the initial and very important conversation around expectations of authorship.

You are also expected to present aspects of your research at regular intervals throughout your candidature. This includes presentations to peers, faculty and other internal colleagues, as well as at conferences and seminars external to the University.

The process is designed to ensure the student is progressing appropriately and also as a supportive intervention whereby constructive feedback is given from outside of the supervisory team. It provides a timely opportunity to refine, redirect and/or enhance the PhD project as well as demonstrate your written and presentation skills.

From 2022, the recommendation/outcomes of the Confirmation of Candidature will align with the recently approved  Graduate Research Continuation Policy and  Procedure .

This should not be confused with your Annual Progress Report(s) .

Confirmation details

While confirmation of candidature processes vary by faculty, all follow a similar procedure.

A general timeline is:

  • Development of your thesis proposal (within the first 6–8 months for full-time students and the first 8-10 months for part-time students). Supervisor approves proposal for review.
  • Supervisor(s) arrange for proposal review by a panel of reviewers consisting of the supervisory team, departmental Research Training Director or designate, and at least one expert external to the department.
  • A date is set for oral presentation of the proposal to the panel of reviewers. The panel needs to have received the proposal at least one full week before the oral presentation date.
  • You present what you consider to be the key issues of your intended research project. The review panel will seek clarification from you on these and related issues.
  • The review panel discusses the proposal and the principal supervisor develops the report with comments and recommendations about the proposal and other aspects supporting PhD completion – This includes a final decision about the confirmation of candidacy.
  • You will receive a formal letter with the results of the review process. The letter will confirm candidature and/or will recommend conditions before candidature can be confirmed. The letter will include a time frame with conditions. In extreme cases, candidature will be terminated.
  • If candidature was deemed to be conditional, you respond to the conditions. You (with your supervisor) report to the review panel chair in writing to confirm you have addressed the conditions.
  • You will receive a formal letter confirming candidature. The report and final confirmation are attached to your official university file.
  • Appeals: Students who have concerns about the outcome or any aspect of the review process should contact the department Research Training Director .

Proposal Preparation

As stated, exact details of the Confirmation of Candidature will vary by faculty and discipline. You must develop your thesis proposal with your principal supervisor and they must sign it before being forwarded to the review panel. Usually, a thesis proposal includes the following sections:

  • title of thesis
  • summary of the project
  • theoretical orientation
  • a critical review of the literature and/or discussion of the literature
  • aims, significance and expected outcomes
  • research question(s) (macro) and sub-questions
  • research design including data collection, data analysis strategies
  • ethical considerations (may include completed Ethics Application as Appendix)
  • bibliography to date
  • the anticipated time frame for completion (including publishing schedule if appropriate)
  • funding and other support needs

You may wish to refer to practical guides and information briefs (available at the Library). Books are available which address the doctoral research experience including designing and formatting thesis-based research. The Library also has handouts related to proposal development.

Research Integrity

All researchers (including but not limited to Graduate Research students and their supervisors) are responsible for adhering to the principles of academic and research integrity. Roles and responsibilities of researchers in maintaining and managing academic and research integrity are specified in the Academic Integrity Policy , the Macquarie University Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (Macquarie University Research Code) and its accompanying standards.

To enable training in research integrity, you are required to submit your research proposal to your Principal Supervisor for submission to iThenticate. This tool will generate an originality report and will determine a similarity percentage based on the proportion of the proposal that is matched to internal or external sources.

Your supervisor must assess the similarity percentage and the originality report generated in iThenticate and use their academic judgement to determine whether the text-matches indicate a problem with originality that needs to be addressed.

There are no standard or ideal maximum or minimum similarity percentages applicable across all research outputs and disciplines. Even a document with a low overall similarity percentage could contain plagiarised text that needs to be further scrutinised or addressed.

When the similarity percentage and the originality report indicates instances of text-matching for the proposal submitted for the CoC, or equivalent, your supervisor must discuss the extent and nature of the matches with you and specify the next stages of dealing with the matter.

For further information, view the  HDR iThenticate Procedure .

Research Data Management

New PhD students commencing after January 2022 are required to complete a Data Management Plan (DMP) to pass your Confirmation of Candidature (CoC) .

There are  two (2) milestones you must complete to meet this new requirement :

  • Complete  RDMOnline module as part of your Graduate Research Induction unit (from February 2024). To successfully complete RDMOnline you need to pass quiz with >86% and obtain a completion certificate to attach to your DMP. RDMOnline takes 1.5 - 4 hours to complete and must be done before submitting your DMP. (If commenced before 2024 you can still access the training via the  iLearn RDMOnline module ).
  • Complete lodgement of a formal  Data Management Plan (DMP ) in  FoRA before handling/collecting data and for submission with  CoC . This requires you to fill in and submit a DMP for review (at least 1 month prior to CoC deadline), respond to queries if a reviewer returns it to you with advice and resubmit for final lodgement. You are required to attach a copy of your "lodgement complete" email with your other CoC documents. Please note that the "lodgement complete" email will not be issued by the reviewer until you address all comments on the DMP and it is judged to meet institutional requirements.
