Love at First Kiss (now on Netflix) is a high-concept Spanish rom-com about a gent who can see the future, and even before we press play, the more astute among us can’t help but quote Yoda: “Always in motion the future is.” Of course you know, it’s not a matter of seeing it, but interpreting what you see. And I foresee some potential for a film directed by Alauda Ruiz de Azua, whose debut film, Lullaby , garnered praise from a god among filmmaking folk, Pedro Almodovar. That’s definitely something to go on – so here’s hoping the ol’ crystal ball shows us being satisfied when the credits for Love at First Kiss roll.

LOVE AT FIRST KISS : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: It’s one of those blessings that’s more of a curse: Javier (Alvaro Cervantes) can see the future. But it’s a more specific type of foresight, one that the movie’s Wikipedia page calls “romantic clairvoyance” – the first time he kisses someone, he foresees the fate of the relationship, and it’s always and inevitably been outright doom. Note, his “power” only works in this situation, or else the small boutique-y book publishing company he owns wouldn’t keep printing up duds. There’s a conversation to be had here about the idea of predestination, and whether one can change the future one sees, or if one is doomed to live it out as presented, and that’ll sort of be explored eventually, but for now, whenever he foresees the breakup, he just sleeps with his partner for a while and then dumps her. Dumping is exactly what he’’s doing when we first meet him; it goes poorly, because a drink gets splashed in his face, but it’s no surprise, because he almost certainly saw it coming in the flash-forward sequence in his mind.

So, what would you do in Javier’s situation? Quest for the kiss that shows him in bliss with his soulmate? Or be a little more pragmatic about things by giving up on that romantic ideal, trying to defy your vision and settling for someone who’s a pretty good partner? I’m not sure if that crosses his mind, since he’s first and foremost a movie character, and I’m not sure this movie is quite keen on further complicating and philosophically deepening its premise. Now this is the place in a movie review where I’d say something like “fate intervenes” and make a joke about how screenwriters like to play god and manipulate their characters into contrived situations, but this particular screenplay sort of puts its protagonist in control of his fate. So let’s just say this: A lightly wacky incident finds him planting one on his best friend’s girlfriend, and he foresees a beautiful life together with her – marriage, children, the whole shebang. And there’s your rom-com conflict, fishbulb.

Question: Has Javier ever told anyone about his “gift”? Yes, and it’s his best friend, Roberto (Gorka Otxoa). That’s a complication. Turns out Roberto and Lucia (Silvia Alonso) haven’t exactly been in the throes of ecstatic euphorical felicitousness. And Lucia may have felt something the night of that wacky incident, something that makes her realize all the meh she feels for Roberto. Javier can’t tell her about his status as an oracle-via-facemashing, because that’s just crazy, right? Right. Meanwhile, other stuff happens: Javier gambles that a past-her-prime author has another gem in her. And he forges an unusual friendship with a free-spirited bartender, Ariana (Susana Abaitua), who hops on the short list of people who know about the “romantic clairvoyance” thing. Ariana entices him to kiss her just as an experiment and – well, I’m not gonna say what happens. But you already know it complicates everything, and sorta opens a can of worms, if you like to read philosophical things into silly movies about love.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Abaitua and Cervantes previously starred in another Netflix rom-com, 2021’s Crazy About Her .

Performance Worth Watching: Abaitua is endearingly intoxicating as the movie’s wild-card character; her work here brings to mind a ’90s-indie Parker Posey role ( Party Girl maybe?) with a healthy sprinkling of Sarah Jessica Parker in L.A. Story .

Memorable Dialogue: I’m of two minds about this one-liner: One, it could be encouraging, showing Lucia’s ability to share her deepest, ugliest secrets with Javier. Or two, it could be discouraging, because it’s an assertion that’s far too morally reprehensible in any context: “Can I tell you a secret? I’m f—ing sick of Baby Yoda.”

Sex and Skin: Nothing beyond some heavy smooching, and one of those silly pre-sex sequences where the two people passionately bonk into the furniture and knock over knick-knacks while they make out and rip each other’s clothes off. Note, the pre-sex sequence is followed immediately by a post-sex sequence, so there’s no actual-sex sequence here, which is disappointing.

Our Take: Love at First Kiss has more on its mind than the average rom-com, but it never quite articulates and explores the big ideas spinning out of its core premise. The balance is off: Its featherweight tone doesn’t quite mesh seamlessly with grandiose notions about love and destiny. But you can’t help but admire the effort Ruiz de Azua’s puts into creating something more than just another dingbat comedy, and her ability to inspire beguiling performances from Abaitua and Alonso, who provide catalytic sparks for the film’s romantic kindling.

Those performances and Ruiz de Azua’s thoughtful direction go a long way toward smoothing over the film’s haphazard plotting, especially during the final act. The screenplay is timid, as if it’s leery of taking any big swings comedically, and unwilling to venture into sexy-adult-romance territory. The opportunity to generate some heat is right there , but the film doesn’t capitalize on the chemistry among its game, talented cast. And yet, despite its untapped potential, Love at First Kiss is a modestly enjoyable 96 minutes, worth watching for Abaitua’s ability to arrive halfway through and playfully goose the project over the finish line. Somebody needs to drum up a dramedy vehicle for her, sooner rather than later.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Although it lacks some oomph, Love at First Kiss is a congenial, pleasant watch.

Love at First Kiss Ending Explained – who does Javier choose?

love-at-first-kiss-ending-explained

We discuss the ending of the 2023 Netflix film Love at First Kiss, which will contain spoilers.

Love at First Kiss follows the life of a sixteen-year-old who can see the future of a relationship just from the first kiss of someone. From his teen years, he sees that love can be complicated. He tries his best not to get hurt again time after time, but sometimes he tries to avoid the future and live in the present. He only dates the women for some time before he breaks up with them to put off the inevitable. In a way, he has full control over every situation and prevents anything terrible from happening.

Javier ( Álvaro Cervantes ) shares that he has a gift with certain people, like his best friend Roberto ( Gorka Otxoa ), but things get messy. Javier continues experimenting, which strains his relationships because he doesn’t want to have this “gift” forever. Javier is a complicated character because the gift works in his favor, but it’s hard to root for him because of his decisions in this film.

The gimmick in this film gets stale fast because he doesn’t foresee the future and follows through every time. It happens one too many times, and the relationships he keeps in this film don’t work out. He quickly uses women to fill the void without warning them about this gift. It’s a bit of a selfish move on his part. One particular relationship in this film doesn’t work because of the betrayal and the secrecy, which makes it uncomfortable to watch.

Love at First Kiss Ending Explained

What happened with lucia.

At one point, Lucia was dating his best friend Roberto, and Javier engaged in a relationship with her behind his back. He thought it was the right thing to do. So Javier fell in love with Lucia, but it wasn’t the fulfilling love he thought would work between them because of his gift.

Javier loses his best friend Roberto in chasing the idea of love and not feeling it. The pursuit of love always comes with a price, and this was the result of it for Javier. At one point, Javier meets Ariana, and when he kisses her, he sees nothing in his head compared to every other girl he has kissed. This scares him because he can’t see the future with her.

So instead of breaking up with Lucia, he continues to see Ariana on the side without them knowing. After Javier showed Lucia his true colors in understanding the future of their relationship and how things would work out, she knew she had had enough.

Who does Javier choose?

Javier had decided at the end of this film that it was OK that he didn’t know where life was going to lead him. That the emptiness and uncertainty were good and had an adventurous side to him. So instead of focusing on how a relationship would work in his favor, he decided to go ahead and make others happy. He had purchased a ticket to Australia for Ariana because she always wanted to go, and he mended his friendship with Roberto.

In the end, Javier knew that Ariana was the one for him, and he would hope that he would see her again. Since the universe has bigger plans for him, his “gift” didn’t allow him to see what was right before him. Things could happen naturally and fall into place. A friend of Ariana’s published a book with Javier’s company, and she became a success.

That night at the release party, Ariana and Javier meet again. Javier tells Ariana that the journey is uncertain this time, but he will follow her anywhere. So he embraces life’s journey and chooses to live it with Ariana.

REVIEW: ‘Love At First Kiss’ Can’t Fully See What It’s Got

Jason Flatt

Love at First Kiss ( Eres Tú) is a Spanish-language Netflix Orignal romance from director Alauda Ruiz de Azúa and writers Adolfo Valor and Cristóbal Garrido . Javier ( Álvaro Cervantes ) discovered when he was a teenager that whenever he kisses somebody for the first time, he can see their whole future together in that instant. It’s never easy, seeing the future. While Javier hopes that it will help him be certain he’s found his soulmate when the right person finally comes around, it also leaves him miserable, as he knows that every relationship he’ll be in until then will be doomed to fail.

I find the concept of  Love at First Kiss absolutely fascinating and entirely exciting. I can’t say I know of any other romance that goes about a sci-fi concept quite like this. Javier isn’t quite traveling to the future, or even necessarily going out of his way to try and influence it. He’s merely captive in a situation that can bring him both a great sense of certainty and cause him an utter lack of meaning. I love the way the movie uses little montages to show the future with every kiss and how they juxtapose a particularly dark, empty moment later in the film.

Unfortunately, though, I don’t think Love at First Kiss  maximizes its plot device’s potential, leaving me with a feeling that the movie was fine, but not nearly as satisfying as its promise left me anticipating. The main reason is Javier himself. First, he’s just so incredibly dull. He owns a small, struggling book publisher, an absolute romance goldmine, and yet, he has virtually no charm and every single scene directly entangling his business and his love life, except maybe for one, is rather negative. I want to like him, I’ve liked Cervantes in his previous Netflix rom-com  Crazy About Her . But here, he’s just a dull man who lacks personality, struggles to convince me he ever is learning or growing, mopes too much, and offers no buyable connection with his romantic costar, Lucía ( Silvia Alonso ).

Lucía and Javier come into each others’ lives first via Javier’s best friendship with Lucía’s partner, Roberto ( Gorka Otxoa ). While my interest in these two’s success romantically is minimal, the dynamic at play between them and Roberto actually is more interesting, and perhaps even better written and depicted ultimately, than the romance at the center of the movie. There’s a movie-long plot regarding their relationships with one another that by its end felt refreshing and satisfying, perhaps because, unlike Javier and Lucía’s kiss-foretold future, this part was totally unexpected.

Equally unexpected and maybe even the most satisfying of all is  Love at First Kiss’s fourth main character, played by Susana Abaitua . She’s the most alive member of the entire cast for most of the movie, which feels both intentional to a degree (her hair is literally purple) and like an inadvertent sin. It’s hard to watch a whole rom-com where there’s more connection and excitement between two other characters than there is between the main ones. But Abaitua really brings the most to the movie. I’m perhaps a bit biased by the fact that she plays opposite Cervantes’ characters in  Crazy About Her and they show much stronger chemistry there than Cervantes and Alonso do here, but every scene with Abaitua just instantly becomes the most interesting and exciting, for better and worse.

She’s even involved in a whole sub-plot that honestly, feels like it adds nothing to the main plot or Javier’s character growth, but for the chances to keep seeing Abaitua at play, I don’t care what it does or doesn’t add. I’m ready for Abaitua to just be the main character and focal point of her own romance. I think she’d bring some spark to a genre that Netflix repeatedly has trouble finding excitement in .

Love at First Kiss has a main character problem, which makes it hard for its creative sci-fi element to reach its full narrative or emotional potential. But, its side characters and plots nearly make up for it, especially where Susana Abaitua is concerned.

Love at First Kiss  is streaming on Netflix March 3rd.

Love at First Kiss Ending, Explained: Do Javi And Lucía End up Together?

of Love at First Kiss Ending, Explained: Do Javi And Lucía End up Together?

‘Love at First Kiss’ is a Spanish romantic comedy film set in the city of Madrid . The movie is directed by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa and can be found on Netflix. It follows the story of Javier Castaños, owner of a publishing house, who possesses unusual prophetic abilities regarding his love life. Anytime he kisses a person for the first time, the entire course of their relationship flashes before his eyes. When a series of events ends with him sharing a kiss with his best friend’s girlfriend, Lucía, he watches a happy, long future unfold for the first time in his life.

Caught in a sticky situation, Javier tries to find a way to secure the perfect romance he has always wanted without forever ruining things with his best friend, Roberto. Will his romantic foresight lead him to true love, and will he find his happy ending? With a cast of likable and fleshed-out characters, and a quirky yet exciting plotline, this story brings an authentic and charming touch to the idea of destined love. Here is everything about the ending of ‘Love at First Kiss,’ explained. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Love at First Kiss Plot Synopsis

The story begins with a cynical Javi who is about to break up with his girlfriend at a bar on a Friday night. However, an interruption from one of his previous girlfriends reveals that the set-up is a consistent shtick of his. He has a long history of breaking up with people, seemingly without any reason, just because he doesn’t “see a future with them.” Though his ex-girlfriends seem to take this excuse simply as just a sign of what they assume are Javi’s commitment issues, it is instead the simple truth.

love at first kiss movie review

From the young age of 16— when Javi had his first kiss— he has been able to see the future of his relationship with whomever he kisses. Ever since his first heartbreak, he has learned to heed his prophetic first kiss visions and thus never lets his relationships get past anything casual. Things take a sudden and unexpected turn when a blind date goes wrong. It ends with Lucía and Javi sharing a drunken kiss. As a montage of a magical, fairytale romance unravels inside his mind, Javi realizes with stark certainty that Lucía is the love of his life.

After that night, their friendship progresses, and the pair start to feel a yet untapped chemistry between them while Lucía doubts her relationship with Roberto. Javi is convinced that Roberto and Lucía are never going to work. At the same time, he is also unwilling to let go of the future he could have with Lucía. At the advice of his regular bartender— Ariana, he has a conversation with Roberto in which he tries to convince him that perhaps he is not as happy in this relationship as he thinks he is.

In a feat of gross miscommunication, Roberto gets the idea that he should propose to Lucía instead and surprises her in the middle of her workday to get down on one knee. Lucía turns him down. Shortly after the couple breaks up, Javi and Lucía hook up, leading to both feeling awful for essentially betraying Roberto in their respective ways.

Though Lucía tries to avoid a relationship with Javi initially, it ends up being inevitable, and the two fall into a picturesque dream-like romance. Their relationship advances, and they live through all the moments Javi had seen them sharing in his vision, and everything is seemingly as perfect as it could be. That is, until the predictability of the relationship starts to catch up on them. Javi’s pre-emptive avoidance of unpleasant experiences and uncanny inability to be surprised, both brought on by his earlier vision, start to strain their relationship.

Love at First Kiss: Do Javi And Lucía End up Together?

Following his first kiss with Lucía, Javi sees his future with her. After years of failed, dead-end relationships, his future with Lucía is unlike any other, promising a long, happy life together. As he spends more time with her, he realizes that her relationship with Roberto is not completely fulfilling. Therefore, when they eventually break up, it’s only a matter of time before Javi and Lucía end up together. They’ve been together for a long time, their relationship evolving from a spur-of-the-moment hook-up to a strong, reliable life spent together. Javi is content in this relationship because, for the first time in his life, he knows that it won’t end.

love at first kiss movie review

Throughout the story, characters often paint Javi out to be a skeptic who can’t seem to be able to ever commit to relationships. But while Javi may be a skeptic, he is also a hopeless romantic. He wants a true-love romance, but because of his prophetic abilities, he can never fully commit to anyone because he already knows how it will end. He does have commitment issues, but not because he doesn’t want to commit; he just can’t. Why would he put time and effort into a relationship he already knows is doomed from the start? So when Lucía presents the opportunity for a fruitful relationship, Javi is all-in. But the worst part, of course, about knowing exactly how a relationship will unfold— is knowing exactly how a relationship will unfold.

In his professional life, Javi constantly deems writer Sonsoles’ current literary endeavor as not good enough because he thinks it’s formulaic and uninteresting. It’s a bad book because it feels like something Javi has already read before. Similarly, although Javi and Lucía’s relationship is wonderful without any obvious complications, it will always be predictable to Javi because he’s seen it before. Only when Lucía tries to throw Javi a surprise birthday party, and Javi does a spectacularly bad job of acting surprised, things start to fall apart.

Javi already saw the party coming; worse, he already saw the surprise trip to Marrakesh that Lucía had gotten for him too. All of this leads to Lucía feeling like she has become dull and repetitive. She puts some space between them and leaves for Marrakech without Javi, instead taking Esther, her friend, with her. Both partners start doubting the other’s place in their lives. Their relationship now has an undeniable air of monotony, and neither partners are happy with it. Ultimately, neither is fulfilled and satisfied, and they realize they’ll be happier with different people leading to their break up .

Who Does Javi End up With?

All of Javi’s relationships fail, and even when he finds the one that logically should have been it for him, it still ends up slipping away from him. Javi’s gift of being able to see the future, when examined closely, reveals itself to be instead a curse. If you know how a story will end, you can’t enjoy it. The narrative repeatedly tries to convey to the audience the importance of uncertainty and unpredictability. In fact, Ariana’s whole character is basically the personification of wild, impulsive choices. The same is why that when Javi kisses Ariana— he sees nothing. There is no future prophesied to him; what he sees instead is just them together in the moment. At first, Javi misinterprets it to mean his prophetic abilities are gone now that he has supposedly found the one. But this theory is eventually questioned when Javi realizes Lucía and him weren’t meant to work out.

love at first kiss movie review

Throughout his life, Javi never got the opportunity to find an actual meaningful romantic relationship that challenged him and kept him on his toes. Ariana, however, in true manic pixie dream girl fashion, embodies spontaneity. Narratively she was everything Javi was not. She took risks— something Javi never did in his love or professional life. She constantly surprises Javi with her reckless, eclectic view of life. In the end, Javi has let go of some of his inhibitions and starts living in the moment instead of the future.

The final scene shows Javi kissing Ariana as we cut to a black screen. It is reminiscent of the couple’s first kiss and implies that, like Ariana, Javi is also living in the moment. As a result, the romance between Javi and Ariana is unlikely to fizzle out. Javi has finally embraced uncertainty as a part of life. And so, when he runs after Ariana in the street and tells her he’s willing to follow her wherever she goes, it’s the final nail in the metaphorical coffin for the character development he underwent throughout the story. Moreover, Javi’s quest of finding “the one” also concludes as he finally finds a partner to enjoy the small moments of life without thinking of the bigger picture.

Love at First Kiss Movie Review: A derivative story that goes nowhere

Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).

Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s romantic comedy, Love at First Kiss ( Eres tú , in the Spanish orginal), could have been so much better. For starters, there is almost no humour worth speaking of. There isn’t even a solitary moment in this cliched story that attempts to make you laugh. It unfolds in the vein of a romantic drama with little to no insight thrown on the complex workings of the human heart vis-à-vis love, relationships and commitment. The sad thing here is that the acting isn’t bad at all. The cast led by Álvaro Cervantes holds its own with a realistic portrayal. But when the writing is so predictably bad, there isn’t much for the actors to salvage.

Director – Alauda Ruiz de Azúa Cast – Álvaro Cervantes, Silvia Alonso, Susana Abaitua, Gorka Otxoa, Pilar Castro

Streaming On – Netflix

Love at First Kiss bases itself on a lame premise. Javier (Álvaro Cervantes) has a rare gift. He is able to see how a relationship will pan out with a woman from the first kiss they share. And here’s the kicker: he has possessed this ability from puberty, when he locked lips with a girl during a game of Spin the Bottle. His boyhood relationship goes south, eventually (he witnesses his girlfriend smooch another female classmate in the library). Why he would go through with it, to begin with, having the foreshadowing knowledge he has, beats me! Cut to years later, and Javier runs a small publishing house reserved for quality writers. He has just broken up with yet another unsuspecting woman; as usual, she has not seen it coming. It all ends with a drink being chucked in his face. Back at work, his employees and best friend listen to his warped philosophy on love and commitment. His publishing venture is down in the dumps because none of his acquisitions is selling. He is advised to represent commercial writers to sustain but he pays no heed. Javier banks on a waning literary great who’s struggling, instead. On one drunken night, Lucia (Silvia Alonso) and Javier share an inadvertent kiss. The former is his best friend’s girlfriend, and the two can’t seem to stand the sight of each other. But strange as it, their first kiss reveals more than he can possibly handle.

There are some predictably heartfelt moments as Love at First Kiss winds down, though that isn’t enough for the film to make it to the above-average territory. It would have made more sense for Alauda Ruiz de Azúa & Co. to present this story as a pure romantic drama with an altered premise. There is no room for comedy here, if you think about it. What disappoints in its brand of drama is that it has nothing of note to say. Javier is a cocksure, know-it-all in each aspect of his personal and professional life. It takes a couple of women to make him change his ways and realise he may have it all wrong. Does sound familiar, doesn’t it? Álvaro Cervantes was exceedingly good in T he Time It Takes ( El tiempo que te doy ). Now that was a deep romantic drama series that was sensitive, intense and bittersweet…things Love at First Kiss aspires to be. The film is quite muddled in its messaging. The narrative is presented as a light romantic comedy, but with a serious dearth of humour and lots of complicated relationships and love problems (and talk), it is anything but.

The writing is, by far, the most disappointing part of Love at First Kiss . From the poorly conceived premise to the hackneyed, predictable storytelling, Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor’s screenplay is entirely to blame. Falling for your best friend’s girlfriend as a trope? This has to be getting stale, surely? As soon as Javier meets Ariana, the quirky performance artist and part-time bartender, you know which way the film is headed. His prophesising philosophy of lip-locking goes for a toss when they decide to carry out a social experiment. With the acting being on point in a subpar script, you feel the actors were hard done by. Intelligent writing and plausible character arcs were the order of the day. For the primary cast of Álvaro Cervantes, Silvia Alonso, Susana Abaitua and Gorka Otxoa, it was sadly not to be! The sequences between Javier and the ageing literary star struggling with writer’s block and mental health issues brim with potential. These scenes provide a window into the protagonist’s perfectionist mindset, a flaw that pervades other aspects of his discordant life.

‘Love at First Kiss’ Netflix Movie Review - Kiss and Tell

Love at First Kiss

Love at First Kiss starts with Javier sitting in a bar. He’s waiting for his date to arrive, and when she does, his ex-girlfriend also arrives. She explains Javier’s break-up ritual to her current girlfriend, and what follows is that Javier gets the drink thrown to his face. Javier possesses a unique power, when he kisses a girl, he can see the future they both will share. If he sees that things between them aren’t going to end well, he calls the girl on a Friday night in the club, pre-pays the bill, then tells her that things aren’t going well between them, and finally breaks up. Just like everyone have a skincare ritual, Javier has his break-up ritual.

Professionally, Javier owns a publishing company. He feels that the books his house will publish should be unique. The publishing house is in huge debt and Sonsoles, the author they’ve signed is a troublemaker. She used to be a great writer, and her first novel was a hit. Sonsoles wasn’t able to handle the fame and started treating her fans badly. After that, the quality of her work also declined and the same trajectory was followed by her career. The publishing house was in enough debt and with authors like her, Javier had huge troubles to face.

One night, while Javier was out with his friends, he kisses Lucia, calling it intoxication or an accident is based upon the audience’s choice of words. With that first kiss shared by them, Javier saw a bright future that involved getting married and having kids. However, the thing that was getting in their way of being together was Roberto, Lucia’s boyfriend, and Javier’s best friend. After some plotting and planning, Javier is successful in breaking them up and secures himself a place in Lucia’s life.

He did everything that guaranteed him a good future, but life isn’t predictable. There are always some variables involved due to which the outcome can differ. Javier planned everything according to his future seeing powers and the remaining life should be filled with happiness still, can you plan your life?

In my opinion, Love at First Kiss is a good movie to watch. It has something new to show the audience, presents a unique perspective, and the best part is that the plot doesn’t feel stale. I liked the concept of how the guy can judge the future with just one kiss, however, as we say that every power has its disadvantages, and the same could be seen in Javier’s life.

Adding Ariana’s character was a unique touch to the entire 96 minutes film. She’s an extraordinary girl who moves with the tagline “expect the unexpected with me”. There’s nothing predictable with her around, and even Javier’s power also fails to work with her one touch. She’s like the Bella of Twilight whose mind Edward couldn’t read. There’s a similarity present between the two films as just like Edward’s powers don’t work on Bella’s mind, Javier’s future reading skills are ineffective in Ariana’s case.

If you’re looking out for an entertaining film to watch this week, do pick Love at First Kiss, and you won’t regret your decision. The only thing that I didn’t like about this film was how the plot became stagnant in the last 20 to 25 minutes. If they didn’t have something worth showing, the time duration could have been cut short or a worthy scene could be added.

"First kiss beliefs" include idealized beliefs that your first kiss with a new partner should be a ... [+] magical, transformative moment, sparking intense emotions within.

Idealized romantic expectations encompass a set of beliefs, ideals and fantasies individuals hold about romantic relationships, often influenced by societal norms, cultural narratives, mainstream media and personal experiences. These expectations often revolve around notions of perfect love and eternal happiness.

Beliefs about how first kisses should be or “first kiss beliefs” are one such romantic expectation. These include idealized beliefs that your first kiss with a new partner should be a magical, transformative moment, sparking intense emotions within.

Individuals with idealized romantic beliefs—characterized by a propensity to romanticize love and idealize relationship milestones—may be more susceptible to interpreting a powerful first kiss as a sign of true love. These narratives often emphasize the importance of chemistry, connection and experiencing “butterflies” and “fireworks” during that initial kiss.

A 2023 study published in Frontiers In Psychology found that interestingly, the presence of these first kiss beliefs can serve to enhance feelings of romantic love towards one’s partner.

Here are four reasons why first kiss beliefs influence the process of falling in love, according to the 2023 study.

  • Evolutionary instincts. From an evolutionary perspective, a first kiss serves as a crucial tool in “ mate selection ,” helping determine a partner’s genetic fitness for reproduction. For instance, while kissing a new partner, you can detect their scent— an indicator of their health, which can enhance your attraction to them.
  • Romantic and sexual satisfaction. Researchers suggest that after a first kiss, people often report feeling more attracted to a partner. Further, perceiving them as proficient kissers and the frequency of kissing as the relationship progresses is also associated with higher levels of sexual and relationship satisfaction. So, first kiss beliefs can shape our perceptions of romance and influence the course and quality of a relationship.
  • Idealized love. Researchers suggest that idealized romantic expectations, such as believing in love at first sight or in having “one true love” can help overlook a partner’s flaws, maintain relationship satisfaction and commitment and lead to longer lasting relationships. Those with first kiss beliefs are more likely to hold such expectations.
  • Anxious attachment styles. Researchers found that anxiously attached individuals are more likely to endorse idealized first kiss beliefs and experience greater romantic love for their partners as a result. Those with this attachment style, marked by a fear of abandonment and dependency on partners, may be more inclined to idealize the significance of a first kiss as a validation of their worthiness and desirability.

Samsung Issues Critical Update For Millions Of Galaxy Users

How to watch real ‘martha’ ‘baby reindeer’ interview with piers morgan, microsoft is finally ending its focus on big budget gaming nonsense.

“It is possible that the endorsement of idealized beliefs could compensate for the overestimation of relationship threat and underestimation of the partner’s commitment that those with high attachment anxiety experience. Those who are securely attached place less emphasis on romantic kissing beliefs when evaluating their relationship,” the researchers add, highlighting how first kiss beliefs may not impact everyone the same way.

While idealized first kiss beliefs can enhance love, researchers also found that endorsing these beliefs predicted more unmet expectations in relationships.

“It is possible that hyper-romanticized beliefs contribute to more unrealistic romantic expectations, resulting in relationships that fail to meet expectations and inevitably poor relationship outcomes ,” the researchers write.

Rather than maintaining fixed beliefs about how relationships should be, a 2024 study suggests that it is essential to have a growth mindset in love. “Destiny beliefs” or believing that people are destined for each other and that a relationship cannot work without an initial spark, tend to create a sense of passivity rather than investment and commitment in relationships, as well as lower levels of relationship satisfaction.

By understanding the influence of these beliefs, individuals can cultivate more realistic expectations and navigate their romantic experiences with greater accountability, authenticity and fulfillment.

While a first kiss is a wonderful way to create intimacy in a relationship, it can only be a small piece of a larger puzzle. In the end, romantic partners must commit to putting in the work throughout their relationship to create truly long-lasting love.
