Hilarious toy tale plugs product but is nonstop fun.

Products & Purchases

It's a movie about Lego characters, many of which are merchandise tie-ins to movies, comics, and books, like Batman, Gandalf, Dumbledore, Superman, Green Lantern, Han Solo, Lando, and Wonder Woman. All of the new characters are also available in various Lego kits and minifigures.

Violence & Scariness

Lots and lots of Lego action and peril, including gunfire and explosions; all are depicted with Lego pieces. Lego characters are "beheaded," erased with nail-polish remover, super-glued in place, kidnapped, captured, and "tortured" (their minds are probed for building instructions).

Positive Messages

Though the message doesn't come until the end, the importance of play, creativity, and parent-child togetherness is a big takeaway. Also, that you can be extraordinary if you believe in yourself and take action. There are some deeper messages about how bland aspects of popular culture are, when everyone sees the same shows, listens to the same songs, and drinks the same expensive coffee. Teamwork is another positive theme.

Positive Role Models

Vitruvius guides and encourages Emmet and leads all of the Master Builders. Like many other reluctant heroes, Emmet is hesitant to believe he can do anything helpful until he believes in himself (but he's always really positive and upbeat). Wyldstyle learns to have confidence in Emmet and be herself, not just her persona as a tough girl.

Educational Value

This is an entertaining film not an educational one, but kids will still learn about various Lego characters, pieces, and instructions.

Parents need to know that The Lego Movie is an action-packed animated family-friendly adventure following original and existing Lego characters. Featuring an all-star voice cast and some of the brand's most popular figures (Batman, Superman, Gandalf, Wonder Woman, etc.), the inventive movie should appeal to all ages, from young Duplo players to teens who consider themselves Master Builders. Although there's nothing overly objectionable (a few mild exclamations like "dang," "heck," "stupid," and "darn"), there's definitely a lot of action and peril, plus quite a bit of violence with the villain's security forces shooting at the good guys, and a character getting "beheaded" (since minifig heads pop off) or erased (with nail polish remover). Kids will love seeing some of their favorite minifigures come to life, but of course they'll probably ask for the tie-in Lego kits after the movie. Based on 103 parent reviews

Funny, clever, action-filled caper with a nice message at the end

Besst movie, what's the story.

THE LEGO MOVIE opens with the legendary battle between evil Lord Business ( Will Ferrell ) and noble Master Builder Lord Vitruvius ( Morgan Freeman ). Lord Business plans to dominate the entire Lego universe with a deadly weapon called the Kragle, but Vitruvius has a vision that a yellow-faced someone, the Special, will defeat the villainous Lord Business with the missing "piece of resistance." Years later, completely ordinary construction worker Emmet ( Chris Pratt ) spies a suspicious figure (Wyldstyle, voiced by Elizabeth Banks ) on the construction site and, while following her, ends up finding the legendary red piece of resistance. Wyldstyle believes Emmet to be the Special and takes him to Vitruvius, but they soon realize he's more of a nice-guy rule follower than a visionary Master Builder. As Business and his cronies, led by a ruthless Bad Cop ( Liam Neeson ), attempt to steal the piece of resistance, Emmet must discover whether he has what it takes to be the Special and save Lego kind.

Is It Any Good?

Movies based on toys aren't ever this good, and it's a testament to the veteran animation filmmakers that this one is so smart, humorous, and visually fun to watch. The perfect cast of voice actors completely embodies their Lego counterparts: Pratt's adorable earnestness is legendary to any Parks and Recreation fan; Banks is a go-to girl-power voice; Arnett sounds exactly like Michael Keaton's Batman; and Freeman, Neeson, and Ferrell are master voice actors. But The Lego Movie is not just your typical animated adventure; there are real messages and sophisticated criticisms of popular culture and consumerism (rather subversive -- or very, very smart -- for a movie tied to a multi-billion-dollar toy company).

Like Luke Skywalker or Harry Potter or Neo, Emmet embarks on the archetypal hero's journey -– complete with his own mystical guide (Vitruvius), intelligent and fierce love interest (Wyldstyle), and larger than life nemesis (Business). Along the way, Emmet bumps into a cadre of hilariously depicted minifigures, from superheroes to historical legends, like Shakespeare and Lincoln. The story contains various brilliant cameos, laugh-aloud one liners, and a live-action interlude that is surprisingly touching. Families with kids of all ages will love this reminder of the joy of playing and laughing together.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about movies based on toys. How does The Lego Movie compare to the others, like Barbie or Transformers films? Does it make you want to get the Lego characters portrayed in the movie?

The movie pokes fun at aspects of popular culture, like dumbed-down TV comedies, catchy pop songs, and overpriced coffee. What do you think the filmmakers are trying to say?

How can we all apply Vitruvius' lesson that everyone is special if we believe in our own talents and abilities?

How do the characters in The Lego Movie demonstrate teamwork ? Why is this an important character strength ?

Lego Star Wars writers on finally bringing Darth Jar Jar to life 10 years after a 2,500-word essay 'proving' his existence broke Reddit: "Everyone was game for exactly what we wanted to do here"

Rebuild the Galaxy hits Disney Plus on September 13

Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy

Jar Jar Binks: one-time laughing stock and, in the years since the prequel trilogy, the subject of surprisingly detailed fan theories that he is – in fact – a Sith Lord.

Almost a decade ago, Redditor Lumpawarroo cracked the case wide open with a tongue-in-cheek 2,500-word essay detailing how Darth Jar Jar was actually pulling the strings alongside Palpatine. Over 8,000 comments later, a legend was born.

Since then, many have latched onto the ridiculous notion that the Gungan is actually the root of all evil. But it was all fan fiction and pie-in-the-sky hopes – until now.

Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy is a new Disney Plus series that takes familiar Star Wars tropes and themes and remixes them in multiverse-style adventures. Of course, that finally meant Darth Jar Jar could spring to life in a galaxy far, far away.

"That was one of those things where, very early on in these discussions about what this show was gonna be like — we knew we wanted to rebuild the galaxy, mash things up, and it felt like the perfect opportunity. 'We need to do Darth Jar Jar,'" writer and executive producer Benji Samit told ComicBook.com .

Samit, though, encountered surprisingly little pushback from both Lego and Lucasfilm when pitching the brick-tastic spin on the infamous character.

"That was one of the first ideas we had where we were just sort of like, 'Do you think we could try this thing?' And to everyone at Lucasfilm and LEGO's credit, they just said yes. Everyone was game for exactly what we wanted to do here," Samit said. "I can think back to us, before we had any success, just hanging out, eating junk food, and theorizing about Dar Jar Jar. And now to say that we made it happen is pretty wild."

The new Disney Plus series, set for release on September 13, sees Ahmed Best return to voice Darth Jar Jar in what Samit describes as a "canon-adjacent" adventure that sees the Star Wars universe shaken up after – as per the synopsis – "an ordinary nerf-herder, Sig Greebling ( Stranger Things ' Gaten Matarazzo), unearths a powerful artifact from a hidden Jedi temple."

LEGO’s JAWS Set Is a Challenging Build That Immerses You in Plastic Brick Water

My summer does not officially begin until I watch Chief Brody and Hooper start paddling back to shore. It’s my one and only summer tradition. And this year it never happened. I never saw Jaws . Not a single scene! Don’t feel too badly for me, because I found an amazing way to appreciate one of my favorite films ever. LEGO sent us its new set based on Steven Spielberg’s seminal 1975 blockbuster , and piecing together the Orca and big ole Bruce more than made up for not seeing them on screen. But just like Alex Kintner never should have been allowed in the water that fateful day, this advanced LEGO Jaws collectible is definitely not for kids.

The LEGO Jaws Set fully built in front of the box

The new Jaws LEGO set is the latest fantastic design to come out of the company’s LEGO Ideas. Jonny Campbell of Belfast submitted this concept back in March of 2022 . His original layout is still very much present in this spectacular set, which adds lots of detail and kinetic energy to his submission.

The official set consists of two main pieces, the Orca and the enormous shark that took it down. You can display each on their own, with “Bruce” getting his own little stand and movie nameplate. Or you can attach them both to an intricate base that recreates movement of waves and whitewash. (Along with some yellow barrels that giant shark is somehow dragging along.) But getting to those finished products takes some work. This is very much an 18+ set.

A front facing shot of the Orca ship from the LEGO Jaws Set

The Orca features a ton of great details and touches. There are fishing rods, spears, a shark cage, and more. It also includes a very full interior cabin that feels cramped as you are building it, but it looks fantastic when it’s done. While some portions of the boat are straight forward to and not especially difficult to make, I found the front especially hard to piece together. It’s very delicate. It was hard to know if I was doing something wrong or it was just made that way to give the boat a sense of vulnerability. I lean towards the former because I had some issues later that I obviously created and needed to very carefully correct. That’s on me, but just be aware that bag 4 (of 13) poses some trouble if you aren’t extra cautious.

Some of the details that make this ship feel like it might really sail away are also extra tricky. You have to tie the rope segments onto the tiniest possible pieces. That was not exactly a day at the beach for my sausage fingers. Also the ropes ultimately run through the very tall, very flexible mast. The mast’s lack of sturdiness adds authenticity, which this set has in abundance. But determining the exact amount of slack to use on the ropes is frustrating and time consuming. Ultimately it’s worth it, but only when you’re done.

A Lego shark on display from the LEGO Jaws Set

The shark speaks for itself. It’s moderately difficult to snap together, as some portions are easy while others are not. It looks great on its own, but also easily separates so you can put most of its body on the base where it chases down the Orca. The best thing about the set’s shark is its size relative to the Orca. They’re almost equal in length, which wonderfully recaptures the moment in the movie when it swims right by and Quint assesses its size at 25-feet and “three tons of him.”

Overhead shot of the Orca chip next to the shark from the LEGO Jaws set

On that iconic ship, you’ll also find three of the best LEGO minifigs ever. Those legendary characters also contain an amazing little joke. Brody and Hooper’s heads give you two options, a happy side and a serious side. Quint, fittingly, only has a serious side. It’s perfection.

But describing what’s in this set and how challenging it is to build is like describing Jaws as a movie about the ocean. It doesn’t capture what’s really important. I’m not kidding about watching Jaws every summer. It’s a perfect movie and I never get sick of it. Actually constructing the Orca and seeing it come to life in my hands was genuinely thrilling. I was geeking out the more it came together. And ever time I added a new portion of detail, I was thinking about specific scenes from the film. I could hear the dialogue. It was a tactile experience that conjured up vivid memories of a thing I love.

Minifigures of Quint, Hooper, and Brody standing in front of the Orca from the LEGO Jaws Set

At around 8-9 hours of build time, this 1,497-piece collectible isn’t a huge undertaking. The set’s time commitment doesn’t reflect its $149.99 price tag , though. If you also love Jaws , when you’re done you’ll have something that is definitely worth the price. Especially if you plan on making sure you have it right by your side when you watch Jaws every summer. And I promise I will not be missing out on rewatching it when the weather turns warm next year. That is, unless LEGO makes a second Jaws set.

I hope there is another one… just so long as LEGO doesn’t base it on Jaws 2 . Not watching the sequels is another summer tradition of mine.

Review: The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – Better than the first, but with just a little too much Chris Pratt

lego movie review reddit

The LEGO Movie opened worldwide this week and I was lucky enough to catch it during the weekend of preview screenings here in Australia.

The movie’s official release date here in Australia is 21 March 2019, but the distributors Village Roadshow finally acquired some common sense and they allowed cinemas to hold special preview screenings this entire weekend.

I watched it at the IMAX Melbourne as they were the first to announce their screenings, and I love watching movies on the massive 3-story IMAX screen.

I’ll split this review into 2 distinct parts, a first spoiler-free movie and the second where I dive into the movie in detail, so be sure to stop reading halfway if you want to avoid any spoilers.

Spoiler-Free Section

What did I think of The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part? I absolutely loved it and I think it is more than a worthy sequel to The LEGO Movie which emerged as a surprise hit.

The movie continues right where the first one left off, with conflict erupting with the citizens of Bricksburg, who are under constant threat from Duplo and soon, a mysterious visitor from the Systar system.

lego movie review reddit

A mysterious futuristic-looking character, Sweet Mayhem shows up, kidnaps Wyldstyle, Batman, Benny, Metalbeard and Unikitty to bring them to the Systar system, and it’s up to Emmet to rescue them.

Firstly, the movie is absolutely hilarious and travels at a frenetic pace. The same meta-humour from the first is back and stronger than ever and the movie is a celebration of pop-culture at its core.

The movie flings references at you at breakneck speed, hitting you with everything from classic movie nods, 80s nostalgia, tons and tons of LEGO/AFOL references , and the cameos . Oh the cameos!

There are dozens of amazing (and often surprising!) cameos from a wide swath of individuals. As someone who is pretty in-tune and obsessed with all things pop culture, this was a veritable buffet of clever references.

What sets this movie apart from the first is the number of risks it takes. The plot is anything but linear and goes places that I completely didn’t expect it to.

At times, it’s a little hard to follow as the pacing is a little too choppy, with not much room to breathe and for much character development, but you do get used to the rapid-fire humor and jokes after awhile.

Secondly is that the music weaved in so much more amazing. It’s not quite in complete musical territory, but the songs are brilliant with some heavy pop bangers and hard-hitting musical numbers.

Building on a legacy crafted from The LEGO Movie’s Everything is Awesome, The Second Part goes hard in the song department and it doesn’t disappoint at all.

lego movie review reddit

The movie also introduces a ton of new (but mostly side) characters which really help ramp up the funny levels of the movie. Each new character fills its own unique niche, and aren’t overused at all.

In fact, I really wish that we got to see a lot more of the new characters, as it seemed like they didn’t get the screen-time they deserve.

Where the movie stumbles for me is that the tight core of characters from the first movie (Unikitty, Benny, Metalbeard and even Wildstyle) get relegated to even more fringe roles in favour of Rex Dangervest, a new tough-guy character introduced that riffs every Chris Pratt and 80s macho hero ever.

Rex is a great character, but after awhile, I just got a little tired of too much Chris Pratt and I found my mind yearning for more of the other characters I’ve come to grow and love.

lego movie review reddit

The movie does kinda rush at the end as it hurtles towards the climax and conclusion, with an equally heart-felt message to it which I really resonated with.

Is it better than the first LEGO Movie? Yes, I do think it is. It’s definitely not as memorable and ground-breaking as the first, which was just such a magical unforgettable experience, but it isn’t trying to recapture the magic of the first, but instead build on it.

It expands the universe of The LEGO Movie in a logical sense, and uses it as a base to explore some other areas, and take a few risks which I like to see in a sequel.

Objectively, the movie is funnier, enhanced of course with the outstanding songs and lyrics, with sensational graphics, brand new lovable characters and a tight, fast-moving plot that doesn’t try to talk down or dumb down its narrative for the viewer.

But just like Iron Man, which was Marvel’s first entry to its (currently) massive cinematic universe, there’s a special sense of magic from first movies that can never be re-created.

If you’re a fan of The LEGO Movie, or enjoy lightning-fast humour, and movies that constantly break the fourth fall with a heavy dose of pop-culture references, you’re going to have a blast in The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part.

Highly recommend this, and I definitely will go back for a second serving when the movie opens again in late March. It’s a must-watch for any LEGO fan.

Rating: 4/5

OKAY SPOILERS LIE AHEAD. SPOILER-FUL REVIEW COMING UP

Close this window if you want to avoid spoilers.

lego movie review reddit

Last chance!

Okay, let’s dive into some of the nitty gritty details.

Firstly, the cameos were amazing. I totally did not see the Bruce Willis scene coming and I absolutely lost it at the vent scene.

lego movie review reddit

I really, really loved the new characters introduced, especially Balthazar, the sparkly vampire minidoll played by Noel Fielding. I can’t wait to get him in a set.

Banarnar, played by Park and Rec’s Ben Schwartz was an example of outstanding physical humour brought to life and I couldn’t stop myself from bursting into a laugh whenever he came on-screen and clumsily lose balance.

One of the drawbacks of the movie is that it tries to do so much at times, which doesn’t leave a lot of space for the viewer to really get to know the characters.

lego movie review reddit

Tiffany Haddish was just perfect as Queen Watevra Wanabi, and absolutely killed it on the musical. Not Evil is actually a really good musical number, and Gotham City Guys was just hilarious from start to finish, and a fresh take on the Batman v Superman rivalry.

The twist of her being the heard from the first movie was also super heartfelt, and such a great way to bridge both movies.

I really wanted to see more of Sweet Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz of Brooklyn Nine Nine fame) was so underutilised. I was expecting for her to play a much bigger role, but she sort of faded into the background in the third act, which is a shame as her character design is brilliant.

I was really disappointed that we got so little of Lucy and Benny. Benny as a nod to Classic Space LEGO fans was criminally underutilised in a movie that was set mostly in space, but the sore lack of Lucy belting out Everything is Awesome, which they heavily suggest she wrote or performed was just befuddling to me.

lego movie review reddit

Such a shame as Lucy is actually a great role model for girls – judging from how much my daughter is obsessed about her from repeated viewings of LEGO Movie 1.

The message about how dangerous it is to project your expectations of how loved ones should be was really poignant, but I felt like Emmet and Lucy didn’t have enough screentime together for it to really drive that point home.

Their relationship and the entire dynamic between him trying to be cool and tough was refreshingly complex for a kid’s movie , and I wish they spent more time developing it.

The part where says the real Lucy wouldn’t like him for being a carefree goofball really tugged on the hearstrings.

lego movie review reddit

A lot of what stops the movie from being truly great can be blamed on Rex Dangervest. While I did like the time travel concept, and the endless quips of movies that Emmet could watch when he was older (in classic older brother style), it got a little old at the end, and I think there was just a bit too much of Chris Pratt.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big Chris Pratt stan, but there was just a little too much, which really stole the limelight from all the other characters.

The most enjoyable bits of the movie were the songs. Tiffany Hadish’s numbers were just fantastic, and the Beck, Robyn & Lonely Island Credits Song is a legitimately great pop song.

When The LEGO Movie Sequel was announced, it was billed as a musical space opera, and I can’t help but imagine what it would’ve been like if they had gone all-in on the Space Opera/Musical angle.

(thanks Dave for the reminder!)

I’ve been hooked to the soundtrack, especially Tiffany Hadish’s Not Evil and Super Cool which are pure bangers.

So yeah, I’m really happy with The LEGO Movie 2 and I definitely think it’s more enjoyable, funnier and ultimately more entertaining than the first LEGO Movie.

It’s a blast, and a roller-coaster of LOLs from start to end, with some epic pop music along the ride.

It does lack a little bit of heart and magic that the first had, but I think that’s okay. As a sequel, it did the right thing by not trying to re-create the magic of the first, but instead try to grow up and find another path, which I think the movie does an amazing job of.

LEGO, you absolutely have to release a Bruce Willis Die Hard minifigure. I don’t care if he’s in a $200 set, I’m buying him the moment you announce it.

Rating: 4/5

Thanks for reading my review! Did you manage to catch the movie on opening week? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section!

‘the lego movie 2: the second part’: film review.

'The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part,' the sequel to the acclaimed 2014 blockbuster, has lost much of the original's irresistible snap.

Even if you were to factor in the uphill challenge of replicating that giddy blast of inventiveness that was the 2014 original — and, to a somewhat diminished extent, the 2017 Lego Batman spinoff —  The Lego Movie 2 : The Second Part  can’t help but feel like a flimsy, unlicensed knockoff.

Replaying many of the visual gags that worked so amusingly before, the latest edition proves every bit as repetitive and uninspired as its glib title, bringing little that’s fresh or funny to the interlocking brick table despite boasting a script penned by originators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller .

Release date: Feb 08, 2019

The feature is directed by Mike Mitchell, with that same breathless overeagerness to please that he employed in Trolls , and the end effect will likely have little problem pounding its target audience into willing submission when it hits theaters. But it’s nevertheless dispiriting to witness just how generic this once-promising tentpole has become.

Set five years after everyman construction worker Emmet Brickowski ( Chris Pratt ) and company emerge victorious over the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell), the story finds the decidedly more infantile DUPLO invaders making good on their previous threat to reduce their beloved Bricksburg to a pile of rubble, dubbed Apocalypseburg.

But while Emmet has remained his gosh-gee-whiz self, his BFF Lucy ( Elizabeth Banks ) has evolved into a “Mad Max-style” butt-kicking tough chick who is beginning to lose patience with his perpetually naive demeanor, especially after she, Batman ( Will Arnett ), Unikitty ( Alison Brie ) and fellow Bricksburgians are kidnapped.

They’re whisked off to a galaxy presided over by the shapeshifting Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi (an instantly recognizable Tiffany Haddish ), who would appear to be of dubious intentions, particularly in regard to her romantic feelings for Batman.

Considering a theme that’s seemingly all about growing up and embracing change, this Lego adventure is awfully content to simply trot out more of the same. Much of the satirical fun (save for, say, mini-figure Bruce Willis and Ruth Bader Ginsburg cameos) ends there, with the rest of the production coasting along on repurposed parts — and not just those belonging to its own franchise. Even the original film’s surprise poignant live-action reveal is continually reprised here to shameless heart-tugging effect, with a leaving-childhood-behind capper that can’t help but draw comparisons to Toy Story 3 .

Although the cast (with Pratt doubling up here, also playing the role of Emmet’s tough-guy, stubble-faced mentor, Rex Dangervest) is energetically up to the challenge, they haven’t been provided with enough of the laugh-out-loud, character-driven opportunities they were given the first time around, especially where Arnett’s brooding, gravelly-voiced Caped Crusader is concerned. Likewise, that trademark, eye-popping digital brickwork seems to have lost much of its dazzling CG snap this time out.

As for those requisite goofy ditties, you know everything isn’t as awesome when the best they can come up with is a tune called “Catchy Song,” with the threatening refrain: “This song is gonna get stuck inside your head.”

Actually, no.

A One Piece fan’s enormous LEGO model of the Marineford Battle has recently gone viral on Reddit after it was spotted in a collector’s shop in Mongolia. The creator and designer, Bayasgalan Bayaara, stated that the model took six months, one million LEGO bricks, 5,000 LEGO Minifigures and 25 LEGO ships.

The creator, Bayasgalan Bayaraa, is the owner of Kids Toys Mongolia and appeared on Mongolian news last year when he first debuted the Marineford Battle Castle . A screengrab photo from the news segment was posted on Reddit, where Bayaara commented, "We are so happy that we finished our One Piece Marineford Castle after 6 months. That is around 2,000 kg with 1,000,000 lego bricks, 5.000 Lego Minifigures and 25 Big Lego Ships."

Yamato Finally Arrives at Egghead Island in Spectacular New One Piece Creation

The son of “Dragon King Kaidou” finally makes his entrance into Egghead Island in a piece of spectacular One Piece artwork of Yamato.

Building One Piece's Marineford Summit Arc Took 1 Million LEGO Bricks and 5,000 Minifigures

Comments on the post praised Bayaara for the massive creation and called for an official LEGO x One Piece collaboration. Others took guesses as to how much a LEGO set of this size would cost, ranging from US$10,000-$150,000 USD after the likely upcharge for official One Piece licensing. For context, "The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell™" LEGO set, which includes 15 Minifigures and around 6,000 pieces, is currently available at Lego.com for US$499. Assuming a similar ratio, a licensed One Piece LEGO set with 1,000,000 pieces and 5,000 Minifigures would cost roughly US$116,650.

Bayaara also previously created a smaller model, with 60,000 pieces and 800 Minifigures, which he presented on Facebook in 2018. This post shows that even in the smaller model, each figurine was painstakingly accurate and curated to truly set the scene of One Piece ’s Marineford Summit War .

One Piece is currently available to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll and Prime Video. The manga is published in English by VIZ Media.

The cast of One Piece, including Brooke, Nami, Monkey D. Luffy, Sanji, Chopper and Carrot, run together during the Whole Cake Arc of One Piece.

Created by Eiichiro Oda, the One Piece franchise explores the adventures of pirate Luffy D. Monkey and his crew, the Straw Hats. Since the manga first debuted in 1997, One Piece has been adapted into an ongoing anime that has seen multiple movies. Most recently it was adapted into a live-action series by Netflix.

The ‘minecraft’ movie trailer blows past 1 million dislikes.

The Minecraft movie trailer has attracted 26 million views on YouTube in three days, but it has also garnered a fully underwater ratio of likes to dislikes. That would be 573,000 to 1.1 million, and it is truly not often you see something like this cross a full million dislikes.

It’s representative and how terribly the Minecraft trailer was received online, channeling a bizarre blocky-but-not-game-blocky animation style for its Minecraft world, with an eclectic cast slapped on a very obvious greenscreen, including Jason Momoa with the strangest haircut you’ve ever seen.

The most meme-worthy part of the trailer is the appearance of Jack Black as Steve, the main character of Minecraft, where he simply looks like…everyday Jack Black in a blue shirt, with his now-signature wild hair and grey-streaked beard. It’s absolutely bizarre. Now, after Black voicing Bowser in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, Black voicing Claptrap in the Borderlands movie and him playing Steve in this Minecraft movie, the public has soured a bit on his non-stop game adaptatation appearances. (Plus there was the whole thing about him selling out his longtime partner Kyle Gass over his political views).

There are two fundamental, deeply weird things about this movie:

1) There’s no real explanation as to why this needed to feature live-action actors, as this is the equivalent of Chris Pratt dressing up in a red shirt and overalls falling into the Super Mario Bros. world in that movie, which obviously would have been terrible.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

2) It’s unclear why the film decided to do this weirdly warped block style in the film instead of, you know, making the entire movie play out in Minecraft itself, which easily could have been possible. You know, like how the LEGO movie was made using…LEGOs? It’s a huge missed opportunity.

The terrible trailer has sparked a debate about how the people hating on it are not who it’s “for,” as the idea is that kids are going to show up regardless because well, it’s Minecraft, one of the most popular games of all time that is still massively popular to this day. Plenty of terrible kids movies have made lots of money, and this one, more than most, seems destined to. But kids are also not stupid, and the audience for this may skew older and more judgemental. I’ve heard anecdotally that many young fans are weirded out by how it looks too, but again, it is hard to imagine this is not going to gross hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars no matter what.

This does in fact remind me of Borderlands in that it was easy to view that trailer and simply know that movie was going to be bad, which it was. Here, it seems like there is almost no chance the Minecraft movie will be good. It’s just a matter of how much money it will make despite being bad. Probably a lot.

Lego has had an over 20-year history of creating feature films. While there have been only four theatrically released Lego movies, well over a dozen feature-length films have been released across DVD, streaming, and even VHS.

RELATED: The Best Screen Pass Eligible Family Movies to Watch on Movies Anywhere

While they’ve seen success with films such as The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie , their track record is far from perfect: it's almost to be expected given the number of releases. That being said, a few stand out as genuinely significant, at least according to IMDb.

'LEGO DC Batman: Family Matters' — 6.1/10

The Bat-family in Family Matters

Lego DC Batman: Family Matters was released in 2019 and is an incredibly loose adaptation of the “Death in the Family” comics arc. The plot follows Batman and his team trying to track down and apprehend the mysterious Red Hood. Users gave the film a 6.1/10 on IMDb .

RELATED: Why 'Batman: Under The Red Hood' Is a Perfect Entry Point for DC's Animated Movies

Audiences were indifferent about Family Matters . Most found the film acceptable, with decent animation and a moderately intriguing storyline. However, critics and fans agreed that adopting the “Death in the Family” comic arc was a strange choice, as this film had to be massively toned down for children.

'LEGO Hero Factory: Rise of the Rookies' — 6.1/10

Main Characters in Rise of the Rookies

Lego Hero Factory: Rise of the Rookies was released in 2010 and was the penultimate Bionicle movie to be released. The plot follows a new rookie team of Bionicles that have to save the day when some old enemies interfere with their training. The movie was based on the toy and the show Hero Factory .

Like many Bionicle movies, Rise of the Rookies got middling reviews. However, this is the highest-rated entry according to IMDb, receiving a 6.1/10 , and fans of the source material seemed to enjoy it. The highlights included solid animation and a cast of talented voice actors. Rise of the Rookies is nothing special, but you could certainly do worse when it comes to the Bionicle franchise.

'LEGO DC: Shazam - Magic and Monsters' — 6.2/10

Shazam and Friends in Magic and Monsters

Lego Shazam: Magic and Monsters is the most recent Lego movie on this list, releasing in 2020. The plot follows Shazam attempting to save the Justice League from his archenemies, the Monster Society. The story’s central theme revolves around trust and friendship, not dissimilar from the themes present in other Lego movies.

RELATED: 'LEGO DC: Shazam! Magic and Monsters' Brings the DC Superhero Home in LEGO Style

Despite most fans praising the film, Magic and Monsters received a 6.2/10 on IMDb . While critics pointed out the repetitive score and weak script, fans seemed to enjoy the offbeat humor and the reinvented backstory of Shazam.

'LEGO DC Super Heroes: Justice League - Attack of the Legion of Doom' — 6.2/10

Roundtable of Villains in Attack of the Legion of Doom

Attack of the Legion of Doom was released in 2015. Along with having possibly the longest movie title ever, it also featured several heroes teaming up to stop the titular Legion of Doom. The voice cast includes voice-acting heavy hitters such as Mark Hamill , John DiMaggio , and Josh Keaton .

Despite an excellent voice cast and decent animation, fans and critics were lukewarm on this entry. Reviewers seemed to take issue with its uninteresting plot and overabundance of characters. Similar to Lego DC Batman: Family Matters , Legion of Doom was not panned, receiving a 6.2/10 on IMDb , but rather, fans were just disappointed at the lack of improvement.

'Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: The Flash' — 6.3/10

The Justice League in Lego: The Flash

Lego Super Heroes: The Flash was released in 2018 and was the first Lego DC movie to focus on a singular character as opposed to the Justice League as a whole. While the League is still present in this movie, Flash is the main protagonist. The plot centers around Flash, who is stuck in a time loop fighting Reverse-Flash.

It may not have been loved by everyone who watched it, having a 6.3/10 on IMDb , but fans enjoyed it. While acknowledging that this movie, in essence, is for children, fans of the Scarlet Speedster were still able to enjoy the talented voice acting, humorous writing, and surprisingly complex plot. Critics took issue with the rough animation and the overabundance of secondary characters, but regardless, Lego Super Heroes: The Flash is still a ton of fun.

'Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League - Cosmic Clash' — 6.3/10

The Justice League in Cosmic Clash

Lego DC Superheroes: Justice Leauge Cosmic Clash has a stacked voice cast and the second-longest movie title ever. Featuring the talents of Troy Baker, Josh Keaton, and Yuri Lowenthal, the dialogue and voice acting are as excellent as ever. Cosmic Clash centers around the Justice League working to get back to their own time after being scattered across the timeline by Brainiac.

Tying for 5th place with Lego Super Heroes: The Flash , Cosmic Clash also has a 6.3/10 on IMDb . Critics cited similar criticisms and praises as previous Lego movies. The dialogue and comedy are great; however, the plot is incredibly thin, and the movie serves as nothing more than a 78-minute commercial overall. It’s still enjoyable but certainly isn’t without flaws.

'Lego Batman: The Movie - DC Super Heroes Unite' — 6.4/10

Batman, Superman, and Robin in DC Superheroes Unite

Lego Batman: DC Superheroes Unite is a straight-to-video movie based loosely on the video game Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes . The movie follows Batman, Superman, and other members of the Justice League as they join forces to take down Joker and Lex Luthor.

RELATED: Every Lego Game by TT Games in Chronological Order

Of the straight-to-video Lego movies, Superheroes Unite is undeniably the best. IMDb rated it at a 6.4/10: a respectable score for a straight to video animated film . The voice acting is top-notch, as it features the talents of Clancy Brown , Troy Baker , and Laura Bailey . The animation is surprisingly clean for 2013, and the dialogue is snappy. Like most straight to DVD Lego movies, the biggest problem is the weak and inconsistent plot.

'The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part' — 6.6/10

Lucy and Emmet in The Lego Movie 2

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is, as the title suggests, the follow up to the critically acclaimed 2014 film, The Lego Movie . The plot follows Emmet and his friends years after the events of the first movie, and Emmet is struggling to fit into a newer, darker world. Fans enjoyed this incredibly delayed sequel, but it wasn’t given nearly as much attention as the first.

In comparison to the original, The Lego Movie 2 was a failure. It received a middling 6.6/10 on IMDb , over a whole point less than its predecessor. In addition, the box office returns were drastically lower, only earning $163 million as opposed to the $468 million of the original. Regardless of that, however, fans still enjoyed it. Despite a shaky plot and some weak character development, the movie was still one of the best-animated films of 2019 and a blast.

'The Lego Batman Movie' — 7.3/10

Batman and Robin talking in The Lego Batman Movie

The Lego Batman Movie was released in 2017 and became the second theatrically-released Lego movie. The film features Will Arnett reprising his role as Batman from The Lego Movie , as well as some other stars such as Michael Cera , Rosario Dawson , and Zack Galifianakis . While not as financially successful as The Lego Movie , it was still a hit with fans and critics alike.

The Lego Batman Movie is, at its core, the essence of what Batman is and has become over the years. It pokes fun at past iterations while simultaneously being a celebration of the past 80 years of the Dark Knight. It also has a surprising amount of depth, similar to The Lego Movie . Users loved the wildly funny, offbeat take on Batman, awarding it a 7.3/10 on IMDb .

'The Lego Movie' — 7.7/10

The main characters of The Lego Movie together looking surprised

The Lego Movie remains to be the most acclaimed and financially successful Lego movie to date. Following the story of an everyman named Emmet and his new friends as they try to save Bricksburg, The Lego Movie is charming, funny, and a visual treat. It stars Chris Pratt , Will Ferrell , and Elizabeth Banks.

Receiving a 7.7/10 on IMDb and a staggeringly high 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics and audiences loved The Lego Movie . Although it was heralded as one of the best movies of 2014, it was snubbed of an Oscar nomination, much to the chagrin of many fans. Financially, however, it was a huge success. It made back over four times its budget and went on to spawn a sequel, two spinoffs, and a third movie that is currently in development.

Part of what made The Lego Movie so special was that despite technically being a 100-minute long advertisement, nothing about the film feels forced or predatory. The Legos serve the plot instead of just being shoehorned in product placement. The Lego Movie is, according to IMDb, the best Lego Movie ever made (though Lego Batman fans might disagree.)

Fast & Furious Already Has Its Perfect Toretto Family Replacement For The Next Saga

Fast & furious 11: 3 most important scenes to remember before the sequel, lucasfilm sued over rogue one's use of peter cushing as grand moff tarkin.

The LEGO Batman Movie is one of the funniest animated films of the past few years, and fans are keeping the release alive, as The Batman's Penguin chase was recreated in LEGO form . The animated movie, along with The LEGO Ninjago movie , created so many possibilities when it came to using popular franchises for feature-length LEGO films.

However, after Universal bought the rights to the LEGO movie franchise in 2019, there haven't been many updates. Regardless of which studio the franchises belong to, Redditors have discussed which series would make the best LEGO movies. Between a high-octane street racing franchise and films about Mesozoic creatures, these series deserve meta, self-aware LEGO films.

Neo stops bullets with his hand

This user wants to see The Matrix LEGO Movie , noting, " The Matrix could be a good one, especially now that it has Resurrections to rip into." The Matrix Resurrections didn't get the best reception from critics or fans, and the meta and self-aware direction that series creator Lana Wachowski took the movie in just didn't land well. However, it could be the basis of some hilarious irreverent jokes in a LEGO movie.

While the future of the Matrix is uncertain, fans have many ideas about which direction it should go in, with some wanting an Animatrix 2 , but The Matrix LEGO Movie could be the best option right now. The only issue would be that bullet time has been parodied to death over the past 23 years, and it felt so aged when it was made fun of in last year's Space Jam: A New Legacy . So it could feel extremely dated in a LEGO movie too.

Lord Of The Rings

Elijah Wood as Frodo accidentally putting on the ring in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

JustUseTheWordMmmkay thinks a LEGO movie based on Lord of the Rings could be spectacular. The Redditor posits, "So many franchises have some kind of kids version available for younger audiences but for Lord of the Rings there is nothing. Would love to get my 5-year-old into it but nothing out there is suitable yet. Lego would be perfect."

Again, like The Matrix Resurrections , the latest LotR content fans have gotten hasn't been quite up to the quality that fans expect of the franchise. A Lord of the Rings LEGO Movie could poke fun at The Rings of Power , and as The LEGO Batman Movie made jokes about Warner Bros. that only adults would understand, it's easy to imagine jokes about the huge budget Amazon invested into the series production.

Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy standing next to the Daleks in Doctor Who

Sethor thinks that Doctor Who has the potential for a great LEGO movie. The series has been going for almost six decades and has only ever had one major hiatus, there's so much content that a LEGO movie could use.

On top of that, the Daleks, the iconic alien species in the Doctor Who universe, have already been in The LEGO Batman Movie . The evil aliens appeared in the final act when Joker summoned countless classic movie and TV villains, so there's already some connective tissue there.

Margot Robbie in pink car in Barbie

IluvTaylorSwift thinks outside the box and suggests that there should be The LEGO Barbie Movie . A live-action Barbie movie will be released in 2023 with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, and Margot Robbie portraying the titular doll. And while not much is known about the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter , it'll be self-aware, irreverent, and expectation subverting, which is hardly surprising given that Greta Gerwig is in the director's chair.

That might eliminate the need for The LEGO Barbie Movie . But given how there are so many iterations of the character, it'd be fun to see them all collide in a meta way. The LEGO film could reference Robbie's Barbie, Toy Story's Barbie and Ken , and even the battalion of evil Barbies in Small Soldiers .

The Cornetto Trilogy

ShaunOfTheDeadKillsMotherWinchester

Booga424 has another outside-the-box choice, as the "Cornetto trilogy" isn't so much a franchise but a group of very loosely connected movies directed by Edgar Wright that star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The Redditor wants to see "Lego Hot Fuzz , Lego Shaun of The Dead , and Lego The Worlds End ." Given how those three movies are already over-the-top high-concept comedies that are already self-deprecating, it's hard to imagine how the LEGO treatment could add another level to that.

The reason why The LEGO Batman Movie was so successful was that the Batman franchise is so serious and dark, but it's essentially about a man who dresses up as a bat. That's the basis for some hilarious LEGO-esque jokes, but jokes like Shaun and his crew passing doppelgangers of themselves is a LEGO movie kind of joke, but it was already done in the movie.

Universal Dark Universe

Nick stands in a crypt and looks stunned in The Mummy

Realistically, most Redditors' choices are completely hypothetical, as the rights to the LEGO franchise belong to Universal after the studio bought it from Warner Bros. So the only franchises that could actually be given the LEGO treatment are ones belonging to Universal unless some unprecedented deal was struck with another studio. And that's why Rageofthegods thinks there should be a LEGO movie that focuses on Universal's Dark Universe.

The Redditor comments, " Lego Classic Monsters , if you can ignore Hotel Transylvania ." Universal tried to build a whole cinematic universe around characters like the Mummy, Frankenstein, and Dracula, but the "Universal Dark Universe" crashed and burned with the failure of 2017's The Mummy . A Dark Universe LEGO Movie could be a creative way to reboot the franchise and make it successful.

Roger Moore as James Bond.

This user thinks that the James Bond franchise could make for a great LEGO movie, and with over 25 films and six Bond actors to reference, they're not wrong. The Redditor suggests, "Maybe they can team up with Amazon to make a Lego James Bond movie."

As MGM and Amazon are seemingly struggling to build the next James Bond series, as it's looking for a young actor to commit to the character for 10-12 years , The LEGO James Bond Movie could be the safest and easiest option. That decision could potentially disappoint thousands of Bond fans, but there's no doubt that it'd rival The LEGO Batman Movie when it comes to making fun of the franchise's tropes.

Jurassic Park/World

Jurassic World Dominion Tyrannosaurus Rex at the Drive-In Theatre

UnrealLuigi thinks a LEGO movie based on the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies could be great. The Redditor hilariously notes, "Wouldn't be surprised if they were vastly superior to the Jurassic World movies honestly." The user is referring to the underwhelming reception of the new Jurassic series, as, though they have grossed billions at the box office, each consecutive release has gotten worse reviews than the last.

Not even the original recast returning for Jurassic World: Dominion helped its chances against critics. However, The LEGO Jurassic Park Movie could salvage the franchise, and as the Jurassic World series has concluded, the franchise has to continue with a fresh approach somehow. A LEGO Movie certainly beats the prequel narrated by Nicolas Cage that fans want so badly.

Voivod1989 wants to see The LEGO Akira Movie . Focusing on niche franchises is why Warner Bros. failed with the LEGO movie franchise in the first place, as nobody showed up to see The LEGO Ninjago Movie . So focusing on an anime franchise that so few of the general audience would have ever seen would likely be a huge financial mistake.

A LEGO Akira film would especially feel a little off given that the Akira series is already animated. However, given that the anime is so dark and serious, it's easy fodder for the LEGO franchise to parody, and its cyberpunk aesthetic would be interesting to see done with LEGO too.

Fast & Furious

Brian and Toretto wearing sunglasses in a convertible in The Fast and the Furious

Hildebrand_rarity asks Reddit, " Fast and Furious LEGO movie?" A LEGO version of the Fast and Furious series might not work all that well considering that the franchise already heavily leans into absurdity, such as rocket-powered Pontiac Fieros going into space. The franchise has even gotten self-aware, as Rome has started questioning how they all manage to survive the fatal situations they find themselves in.

However, hearing jokes about Dom's obsession with family alone might be worth it. And as fans would love a direct sequel to Tokyo Drift, a LEGO movie might be the only way they'll get some sort of follow-up to the 2006 cult classic. With just two more movies before the Fast Saga comes to an end, it could be a possibility.

The film literally looks like a LEGO set has come to life onscreen - and in this case, 3D viewing is a MUST. The directors use the three-dimensional format in exactly the right manner: an immersive design that pulls you into the visuals while adding the proper "diorama effect" that makes the LEGO figurines and sets feel like the real objects, rather than animated interpretations of the them.

The LEGO Movie opened worldwide this week and I was lucky enough to catch it during the weekend of preview screenings here in Australia. The Lego Movie is one of only a half dozen films this decade that I'd give the full five stars/10 out of 10 rating, so obviously this film would have a tough time following that up in my eyes.
