It’s designed to be consumed rapidly (in 20 minutes or less), so it features articles that are light enough that you can get informed in relatively simple Spanish .

Similar to 20minutos , Metro features short, to-the-point articles primarily intended for commuters who read the news on their way to and from work.

El Diario popular is a local newspaper published in Argentina and read widely in some of the Buenos Aires suburbs.

Free Spanish Reading Logs Plus a Digital Fillable One

Whether you’re encouraging reading with preschool students or wanting to track your own reading, you’ll find a free Spanish reading log for you. One is meant to be colored or filled in as you go–namely for tracking the number of books read as opposed to titles. And two can be printed as they are or filled and saved digitally in PDF form.

Spanish Vocabulary

Normally we’d include a long list of vocabulary words covered, but in this set of downloads, there are just two different phrases:

• Registro de lectura
• Mis lecturas

Lectura essentially means reading . So, registro de lectura translates roughly to “reading list,” and mis lecturas roughly translates to “my readings.”

Reading Logs

Obviously we don’t have to tell you how important reading is. But, in case you love data, you can deep-dive into some reading statistics on Statista . With kids, in particular, having a visual learning goal, sheet, or list can improve willingness to learn and/or to work consistently toward something, as even kids aren’t immune to wanting to check-off or color things to complete a list.

This reading log is designed for any age but works especially well for young readers who aren’t necessarily ready to record the titles of the books they have read. As a bonus, the PDF file has a space on the “top shelf” where you can type the learner’s name if you want. Or, if the reader is able, he or she can record it there after printing.

Fillable Spanish Reading Log #1

Whether you print this or use it digitally, this one is completely fillable. It only has five areas to record titles (plus one space for the reader’s name) so that you have lots of flexibility. For example, you can use it with young students who don’t read many books and need lots of room to record titles. Or, you can use it with students who struggle to achieve reading goals and therefore need a non-overwhelming short-term goal. It also works well for display, as students can see each other’s and their own progress, or for reading goals in defined periods, such as during summer, semesters, grading periods, and so on.

OpenAI’s rules can be ‘easily’ dodged to target Latinos, study warns

In January, OpenAI unveiled revamped policies aimed at preventing its tools from being used to spread disinformation ahead of the 2024 elections , including by blocking people from building chatbots “for political campaigning and lobbying.”

But a new study released Thursday argues that the rules can be “easily” bypassed “to maliciously target minority and marginalized communities in the U.S. with misleading content and political propaganda,” such as Latinos and Spanish speakers.

The findings, researchers say, highlight key enforcement gaps in OpenAI’s rules that could have big implications for underrepresented and non-English-speaking communities during this year’s elections.

The Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas, a research unit that examines how Latinos navigate the internet, ran several tests asking OpenAI’s ChatGPT tool to help create a chatbot for campaigning purposes, including “to interact in Spanish” and to “target” Latino voters.

While all of the prompts “should not have generated responses” under OpenAI’s rules, researchers wrote, the tests “resulted in detailed instructions from GPT-4.” 

“Targeting a chatbot to Latino voters in the U.S. requires a nuanced approach that respects cultural diversity, language preferences and specific issues of importance to the Latino community. Here’s how you could tailor the chatbot for maximum effectiveness,” one reply read.

Roberta Braga, the group’s founder and executive director, told me that the results show the company’s safeguards “were super easily circumvented,” even when researchers “were not hiding the intent” ― targeting campaigns at Latinos.

The report draws a parallel between those findings and broader efforts to crack down on misinformation online. Lawmakers and advocacy groups have long accused tech companies of underinvesting in resources to adequately enforce their rules in non-English languages , particularly social media companies.

The study shows that with AI tools, too, the rules are “not yet being applied consistently or symmetrically across countries, contexts, or in non-English languages,” researchers wrote.

The report did note that “OpenAI’s terms of service are more advanced in addressing misuse and the spread of disinformation than those of most companies bringing generative AI products to market this year.”

Researchers also tested OpenAI’s image-generation tool, DALL-E, which company rules prohibit from being used to create visuals of “real people, including candidates.” 

While the tests did not bypass those guardrails, researchers were able to generate images of politicians holding up the “okay” hand gesture, which groups such as the Anti-Defamation League consider a hate symbol due to its ties to white-supremacist organizations .

“For us, it showed that the tool can't detect the nuance, so even though the terms are in place, this tool can very much be used to make strong political statements,” Braga said.

OpenAI spokeswoman Liz Bourgeois said in a statement that the “findings in this report appear to stem from a misunderstanding of the tools and policies we’ve put in place.”

Bourgeois said the company allows people to use their products as a resource for political advocacy and that providing instructions on how to build a chatbot for the purposes of a campaign is not in violation of its policies.

But Braga, who previously worked at the Atlantic Council think tank, stressed that OpenAI’s tools still “offered guidance on how to define intent, create conversational flows, craft responses, integrate feedback loops” and on how to program and configure chatbots targeting Latinos.

Madrid prosecutors ask judge to shelve investigation into Spanish PM’s wife

Pressure group accusing Begoña Gómez of corruption admits media reports allegations were based on may not be true

Prosecutors in Madrid have asked a judge to throw out a preliminary corruption investigation against the wife of Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez , as the pressure group behind the complaint admitted its allegations may be based on incorrect media reports.

Sánchez, whose socialist party has governed Spain since 2018, shocked the country on Wednesday night by announcing that he was considering resigning over what he termed a baseless “harassment and bullying operation” being waged against him and his wife by his political and media opponents.

The prime minister said the “seriousness of the attacks” he and his wife, Begoña Gómez, were experiencing had led him to re-evaluate his position, and that he would reveal his decision on Monday.

His announcement came hours after a Madrid court opened a preliminary investigation into Gómez’s business affairs, following a complaint made by a pressure group whose leader has links to the far right and which frequently brings legal action against those it accuses of acting against Spain’s democratic interests.

The group, Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), has accused Gómez of using her influence as the wife of the prime minister to secure sponsors for a university master’s degree course that she ran.

Sánchez said the Manos Limpias complaint was based on “alleged reporting” by news sites whose political leanings he described as “overtly rightwing and far right”, adding: “As is only logical, Begoña will defend her honour and will cooperate with the justice system as much as is necessary to clear up facts that are as scandalous in appearance as they are nonexistent.”

On Thursday, Madrid prosecutors asked the court to shelve the investigation, while Manos Limpias appeared to row back on its accusations.

Although the court has not provided any details so far, the online news site El Confidencial said investigators were examining Gómez’s links to several private companies that received government funding or won public contracts.

The site said the investigation was linked to Gómez’s alleged ties with the Spanish tourism group Globalia, which owns the Air Europa airline.

It said she had twice met Javier Hidalgo, Globalia’s chief executive, when the carrier was in talks with the government to secure a huge bailout after it was badly hit by the loss of air traffic due to the Covid-19 crisis. At the time, Gómez was running IE Africa Center, a foundation linked to Madrid’s Instituto de Empresa (IE) business school, in a position that she left in 2022.

In a statement released on Thursday morning, Manos Limpias seemed more cautious about the allegations that had formed the basis of its complaint. The group said it had learned “through various digital newspapers, about information that outlined alleged irregularities that could allegedly be criminal”.

It said it had exercised its right to put the matter before a judge, who would be best placed to determine whether the media reports were true. “If they are not true, then whoever published them should take responsibility,” the statement said. “But if they are not untrue, we understand that the judicial investigation should continue.”

While Sánchez’s allies have rallied around him, and government sources have decried the personal attacks as indicative of the Trump-like turns Spanish politics have taken over recent years, his opponents have accused him of petulance, playing the victim, and failing to live up to his office.

“The prime minister of Spain can’t throw an adolescent fit so that people line up to tell him not to be upset and to carry on,” said Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the conservative People’s party (PP). “Being prime minister is more serious than that. Being prime minister is about being accountable to the people, even in difficult circumstances.”

Sánchez, who has built a reputation as a political survivor and risk-taker, could remain in office and submit himself to a confidence vote to try to shore up his leadership. If he resigns on Monday, MPs could attempt to choose a new prime minister, or a general election – Spain’s sixth in nine years – could be called and held in July.
