David - Tamil Movie Review

A different attempt, backed by some good performances by lead actors, but ends up lacking nativity and pace.
David tries to push the envelope on innovation with its multiple tales. Ironically for a film with two stories to tell, it is weak on content.

Review: David is a masterpiece

Movie poster of David

Set in 1999, is the story of 19-year-old David, played by Jiiva. He is a young musician, brought up by a family of rather staunch Christians in Mumbai. He is the quintessential young boy, buoyant and vibrant, bereft of any worries as he goes about life in his happy-go-lucky ways.

He nurses an ambition of making it big as a rock star, one that his guitar teacher (Lara Dutta) encourages and believes in. An opportunity of a lifetime presents itself before him -- but he must make a difficult choice as suddenly, his life takes a turn as his father finds himself smack centre in a political issue.

The second story traces the tale of David, a 30-year-old fisherman played by Vikram, set in Goa in 2010. Between getting drunk and earning a living in the heart of a fishing village in Goa, David has a painful story, for a long-time girlfriend leaves him for someone else. Absolutely bereft of any care for anyone, his life takes a turn when he falls head-over-heels in love with a deaf-and-dumb belle, played by Isha Sharvani.

Love for David is a blissful thing indeed -- but this one comes with a challenge. His lady love is engaged, and to be married to his best friend, Peter, in 10 days. Besotted with the beauty, his friend and he face a massive misunderstanding that drives them apart. Frenny, a friend of his, played by Tabu, comes to his aid.

The story proceeds to take us through the difficult decisions that face both the men -- for one, it is about saving the man who brought him up, and for the other, it is about coveting the love of his life. What do they do?

Well-scripted and executed in a way that only asks for appreciation from the viewer, David is a class act in motion. One wonders if there could have been anyone else besides these two, to play their characters in the film.

Isha Sharvani is simple and charming, while Tabu is her usual super-talented self. Sarika sizzles in the item number. The music by Dub Sharma, Bramfatura, Anirudh Ravichander, Maatibaani, Modern Mafia, Remo Fernandes and Prashant Pillai do great justice to the movie.

But what takes the cake is the stunning cinematography. Whether in the action scenes or in the transitions from one story to the next - the scintillating scenes makes viewing the film a grand experience in itself.

Nambiar has done a brilliant job with the film. Though wonderfully planned and executed, the movie has an edgy spontaneity to it. Each actor imbibes the quintessence of their characters into themselves, getting under the skin of the role they play with such flair that it is natural.

The characters themselves are realistic, and believable. Their emotional struggles and their reactions to the world around them are pictures painted with vibrant shades, rather than the disturbed and dark protagonist that one is wont to consider them to be. Thinking out of the box can sure get one ahead, and Nambiar has proved his prowess with elan.

The trailer and stills of David made it clear to us that the movie was about two characters in different time eras and different places, but with the same name. Goa, 2010 and Mumbai, 1999 are the scenes of action with Vikram and Jiiva being the protagonists respectively.

David is a 2013 Indian crime film directed by Bejoy Nambiar , starring Neil Nitin Mukesh , Vikram and Vinay Virmani in the title role, alongside Tabu , Monica Dogra , Lara Dutta and Isha Sharvani . In the Tamil version of the film actor Jiiva played the role of Vinay Virmani while Neil Nitin Mukesh's segment was excluded. [2] The plot revolves around the lives of three different men named David (two Davids in the Tamil version), who are about to take a step which is going to change their lives forever. [3] Both the Hindi and Tamil versions were released on 1 February 2013.

The following plot is about the Hindi version . The London segment featuring Neil Nitin Mukesh is only present in the Hindi version.

The story revolves around the lives of three Davids in three different parts of the world in three different eras.

London, 1975: 30-year-old David ( Neil Nitin Mukesh ) works for Iqbal Ghani, a dreaded Mafia don who controls London's Muslim community through his illegal activities. David is Ghani's protege who is poised to take over the empire one day as Ghani's son is a spoilt, playful brat. David is in love with Ghani's ward, Noor and promises to marry her. Things take a turn when two undercover RAW agents come to London to expose Ghani's ties to religious extremists in India. While trying to take David down, the agents reveal to him that his mother was Ghani's mistress and might have killed his father to be with him. David's loyalty towards his master is tested even more when Noor is forcefully married off to Ghani's son to hide the fact he is gay even though she is pregnant with David's son. When the RAW agents finally manage to get close to Ghani, they assassinate not only him but David as well to keep their mission a secret from the British authorities.

Mumbai, 1999: 19-year-old David (Vinay Virmani / Jiiva ) is an amateur guitarist born into a family of lower-middle class Christians. He is a happy go lucky teenager who dreams of becoming a professional musician and sending his sisters off to Dubai to pursue their dreams. Their father, Noel, a Protestant priest rallies the locals to do charity work for those in need. A Hindu fanatic politician, Malati Tai, finds out about this and makes it appear as if David's father is converting poor people to Christianity in return for money. She attacks David's colony with the help of gangsters and humiliates Noel by blackening his face in front of the media. Traumatised by this, the priest starts to lose his mind. An angry David is then easily persuaded by a political activist to assassinate Malati at a rally to seek vengeance. However, the plan is foiled when an unknown gunman fails to assassinate Malati and instead kills the police officer standing next to her.

Goa, 2010: 30-year-old David ( Vikram ) is an alcoholic fisherman living in the small fishing village of Betul in Goa. He falls in love with the deaf and mute Roma ( Isha Sharvani ) – the only hitch is that she is engaged to be married to his best friend Peter in 10 days. When he finds out Peter does not really love her but is only marrying her for her wealthy father's boat which he will receive as dowry, David is coaxed by his friend, Frenny to stop the wedding. However, David comes to realise that his intentions might not be sincere as both his mother and the priest who tries to help him stop the wedding become involved in separate accidents and are hospitalised. On the day of the wedding, David plans to profess his love for Roma until Peter reveals that he actually sincerely loves her and was only lying that he was marrying her for the dowry out of fear he would be teased. David decides not to stop the wedding.

Gradually, it is revealed that all three Davids are connected somehow in the turn of events. In 1999, the London David's son with Noor, Iqbal, comes to Mumbai to seek revenge for his father's murder from the two RAW agents. He kills one RAW agent who is retiring as a General. The police officer killed at Malati Tai's rally is actually the other RAW agent who Iqbal shoots down with intent. Witnessing the shooting makes the Mumbai David realise what he almost became had he succeeded in assassinating Malati. He then moves to Goa and becomes a priest.

In 2010, he is the priest that marries off Peter to Roma. Realising that the Goan David would have spoken out against the wedding, he praises the Goan David for not doing so after the ceremony.

Development

Bejoy Nambiar announced in December 2011 that he would make a Hindi film titled David , a gangster-comedy, and signed on Vikram to play a protagonist in the film. The pair had previously worked together in Mani Ratnam 's Raavan and Raavanan , in which Nambiar had been an assistant director. [4] It was revealed that the film would simultaneously show tracks of three people named David: Vikram's story takes place in Goa, while the two other stories happen in Mumbai and London and that they occur at different periods. Three cinematographers, R. Rathnavelu , P. S. Vinod and Sanu Varghese were recruited to shoot the respective segments. Sanjeev Lamba of Reliance, the film's producer, noted that the film had undergone changes and would be made a bilingual in Hindi and Tamil.

Vivek Oberoi was also recruited to play a titular character in the film. However Oberoi opted out of the project after finding out that the film would be a bilingual, and the team considered Farhan Akhtar before replacing him with Neil Nitin Mukesh . [5] Neil Nitin Mukesh was asked to sport a complete retro-gangster look, and grow a hefty moustache for his role in the film. [6] Mukesh's portions in the film were shot in London. [7] Canadian-Indian actor Vinay Virmani would play the third character called David in the film and Jiiva reprised his part in the Tamil version. [8] [9] The storyline involving Mukesh's character were scrapped from the Tamil version, which left it with only two people named David. [10] In January 2012, the producers signed Tabu and Isha Sharvani to play lead female roles in the film, with reports that Isha would be paired opposite Vikram. [11]

Scenes involving Vikram were filmed in Hindi only except for part of the climax scene, which was filmed in both languages. [12] It was the first out of the three segments and were canned in locations which were meant to show a Goa n backdrop. [13] [14] The team thus shot scenes featuring Vikram and Isha Sharvani in Alleppey , Kerala in late February 2012, before moving to Kuttanad . [15] Mangalore beach was designed to replicate the beaches of Goa and a song featuring Remo Fernandes was also shot in February. [16] Ratnavelu revealed that scenes were also canned in Kapu, Karnataka disguising Goa and that Vikram finished his portions for the film by March 2012. [17] Nishan , a Mumbai-based actor who had appeared in Malayalam language films, was also selected to play a role in the segment, [18] while actress Rubi Chakravarti was also recruited to play Vikram's mother in the film after Bejoy Nambiar approached for a role written with her in mind. [19] Prahlad Kakkar , a noted ad-maker, was convinced by Nambiar to make his debut in film by appearing in the role of a priest and consequently shot his scenes in Mangalore . [20] Vinay Virmani appears briefly in the climax of the Tamil version of the film. [21]

The scenes of the character playing a musician by Vinay Virmani and Jiiva, was the second segment to be shot with Sejal Shah recruited as cinematographer. Lara Dutta plays an extended cameo role in both versions as a mother, whose child is tutored by Virmani and Jiiva's character. Sheetal Menon , who appeared in Shaitan was also recruited to play a pivotal role in Vinay Virmani's and Jiiva's sequences. [22] Singer Shweta Pandit also shot for the film in both languages making her debut as a musician, while Nassar was recruited to appear in both versions of the film. [23] Manish Jha , director of the 2003 film Matrubhoomi , was signed on to act in another pivotal role in the third segment with Nambiar noting "he was physically perfect for the part". Actor-director Satish Kaushik also shot for this portion of the film, portraying one of David's neighbours. [24]

Nambiar noted that Neil Nitin Mukesh's scenes were the most problematic to shoot as a result of the actor's involvement in his other film 3G being shot in Fiji and thus dates were difficult to accommodate Shilpi Shukla did great in the movie to. Akarsh Khurana, a theatre actor, who also helped write portions in the film, was also selected to play a major role and shot for scenes in Neil's portion. [25] Monica Dogra was chosen to portray the female lead in this segment, [26] being paired opposite Neil Nitin Mukesh. [27] Anupama Kumar , who was previously seen in Ishqiya , was one of the few South actors to be recruited to act in the Hindi version; she would play a Pakistani woman of the 1970s which she termed as "very different and exciting". [28] The scenes involving Neil's character would start in Canada and finish in Ooty and completed by the end of 2012. [29] A five-day shooting was held at the City Hall of Belfast , Northern Ireland, UK in September 2012. The film was enticed to Northern Ireland on the back of a trip to India earlier this year by Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster. In a collaborative effort between Invest Northern Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen, Indian Production company Getaway Films has received £30,000 funding through the Northern Ireland Screen Fund supported by Invest NI and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The film was widely supported by the Northern Ireland Screen Initiative. [30] [31]

Bejoy Nambiar planned an innovative strategy to release the first look of the film on sites such as Twitter and YouTube. [32]

Critical reception

The film opened to very positive response of 50% only and collected 50–60 lakh net on its first day. On day 3, it collected another 1.05 crore and the total collection for the 1st weekend would be 2.57 crore net at the domestic box office. David had an average fourth day and collected 2.1 crore. Critics Review

David's plots look very weak and long drawn.

Director's idea of setting up two different stories in different time periods, and converging them at the climax is appreciable. The climax looks uninspired and little preachy (more)

A different attempt, backed by some good performance by lead actors, but ends up lacking nativity and pace.

The main talking point of David before the movies release was its highly imaginative soundtrack. But sadly the way the songs have been woven into the narrative is underwhelming. David is a 2013 Indian Tamil -language action film directed by Bejoy Nambiar , starring Vikram and Jiiva in the title roles, alongside Tabu , Lara Dutta , Isha Sharvani and Nassar . An altered version with the same title David featuring a slightly different cast was simultaneously shot in Hindi . [1] The plot revolves around the lives of two different men named David, who are about to take a step which is going to change their lives forever. The film was released worldwide on 1 February 2013 to positive reviews but did not perform well at the box office. Scenes involving Vikram and Tabu were dubbed from the Hindi version. [2]

Plot [ edit ]

The story is about two Davids living in different parts of India whose lives eventually come together in a twist of events.

Mumbai, 1999: 19-year-old David ( Jiiva ) is an amateur guitarist born into a family of lower-middle class Christians in a poor colony in Mumbai . He is a happy go lucky teenager who dreams of becoming a professional musician and sending his sister, Susannah ( Sheetal Menon ) off to Dubai to pursue her dreams. Their father, Noel ( Nassar ), a Protestant priest rallies the locals to do charity work for those in need. A Hindu fanatic politician, Malati Tai ( Rohini Hattangadi ), finds out about this and makes it appear as if David's father is converting poor people to Christianity in return for money. She attacks David's colony with the help of gangsters and humiliates Noel by blackening his face in front of the media. Traumatized by this, the priest starts to lose his mind. An angry David is then easily persuaded by a political activist to assassinate Malati at a rally to seek vengeance. However, when David tries to kill Malati by a knife, the political activist shouts by David's name and shoots Malati by a Pistol, and bullet attacks her.

Goa, 2010: 30-year-old David ( Vikram ) is an alcoholic fisherman living in the small fishing village of Betul in Goa . He falls in love with the deaf and mute Roma ( Isha Sharvani ) – the only hitch is that she is engaged to be married to his best friend Peter ( Nishan Nanaiah ) in 10 days. When he finds out Peter does not really love her but is only marrying her for her wealthy father's boat which he will receive as dowry, David is coaxed by his friend, Frenny ( Tabu ) to stop the wedding. However, David comes to realise that his intentions might not be sincere as both his mother and the priest who tries to help him stop the wedding become involved in separate accidents and are hospitalized. On the day of the wedding, David plans to profess his love for Roma until Peter reveals that he actually sincerely loves her and was only lying that he was marrying her for the dowry out of fear he would be teased. David decides not to stop the wedding.

Gradually, it is revealed that both Davids are connected somehow in the turn of events. Witnessing the Malati's attempted assassination makes the Mumbai David realise what he almost became had he been the one to do the assassination. He then moves to Goa and becomes a priest like his father. In 2010, he is the priest that marries off Peter to Roma. Realising that the Goan David would have spoken out against the wedding, he praises the Goan David for not doing so after the ceremony.

Production [ edit ]

Development [ edit ].

[3] Sanjeev Lamba of Reliance, the film's producer, then noted that the film had undergone changes and would be made a bilingual in Tamil and Hindi. Vikram was not informed that the film was being made in Tamil. [4] In January 2012, the producers signed Tabu and Isha Sharvani to play lead female roles in the film, with reports that Isha would be paired opposite Vikram. [5] In April 2012, Jiiva confirmed that he joined the film to appear as the second protagonist, announcing that Vikram would be a part of both versions. [6] Jiiva would be playing a rock band star in the film who hails from Bandra , Mumbai . [7]

The Tamil version would simultaneously show tracks of two people named David with Vikram's storytaking place in Goa, while Jiiva's portion happens in Mumbai. A third story, featuring Neil Nitin Mukesh that was shot for the Hindi version, was planned to be retained for the Tamil version as well, but was eventually scrapped. [8]

Filming [ edit ]

Scenes involving Vikram were filmed out first and were canned in locations which were meant to show a Goan backdrop. The team thus shot scenes featuring Vikram and Isha Sharvani there in late February 2012, before moving to Kuttanad . [9] Mangalore beach was designed to replicate the beaches of Goa and a song featuring Remo Fernandes was also shot in February. [10] Ratnavelu revealed that scenes were also canned in Kapu, Karnataka disguising Goa and that Vikram finished his portions for the film by March 2012. [11] Nishan , a Mumbai-based actor who had appeared in Malayalam language films, was also selected to play a role in the segment, [12] while actress Rubi Chakravarti was also roped in to play Vikram's mother in the film after Bejoy Nambiar approached for a role written with her in mind. [13] Prahlad Kakkar , a noted ad-maker, was convinced by Nambiar to make his debut in film by appearing in the role of a priest and consequently shot his scenes in Mangalore . [14]

The scenes of the character playing a musician Jiiva , was the second segment to be shot with Sejal Shah roped in as cinematographer. Lara Dutta plays an extended cameo role as a mother, whose child is tutored by Jiiva's character. Singer Shweta Pandit also shot for the film in both languages making her debut as an actress, while Nassar was roped in to appear in the Tamil version of the film. [15] Manish Jha , director of the 2003 film Matrubhoomi , was signed on to act in another pivotal role in the segment with Nambiar noting "he was physically perfect for the part". Actor-director Satish Kaushik also shot for this portion of the film, portraying one of David's neighbours. [16]

Marketing [ edit ]

Bejoy Nambiar planned an innovative strategy to release the first look of the film on sites such as Twitter and YouTube . [17] The trailer of both versions were received very positively all over.

Musicperk.com rated the album 8/10 quoting "A trendsetting killer soundtrack!" [20] Haricharan Pudipeddi from Nowrunning.com gave 3.5 out of 5 and said "One thing common between any A. R. Rahman 's soundtrack and this album is that it takes time for the listener to understand and appreciate the music. It's very unlikely that one may like it instantly" [21] IBNLive said that "the soundtrack boasts of trendsetting music" [22] Behindwoods rated 3.5 stars out of 5 by saying "David isn't just a great soundtrack, it's destined to be a trend-setter." [23] NDTV Movies, rated the soundtrack 3 out of 5, with the song "Kanave Kanave" as their pick of the album. [24] Indiaglitz rated the album 3/5, stating "David is a very different album. In fact, different is an understatement. When there are different composers bringing different styles of music to the album, and you are in for quite a ride when you listen to them one after the other. Passing judgement on this, however, is highly difficult. Let's leave it to the people to decide things themselves." [25] MusicAloud rated the album 8/10, stating "There is no doubting Bejoy Nambiar's exquisite sense of music. To do that with as many as nine different composers is quite a feat! Respect." [26] Milliblog reviewed the soundtrack as "David soundtrack is mighty unconventional for a Tamil film. But where it loses out lyrically, it makes up in audacity and sheer diversity, delivering a vibrant pastiche!" [27]

David received positive to mixed reviews from critics. Kirthi Jeyakumar of Rediff.com gave 4 out of 5 stars, and stated "The characters themselves are realistic, and believable. Their emotional struggles and their reactions to the world around them are pictures painted with vibrant shades, rather than the disturbed and dark protagonist that one is wont to consider them to be. Thinking out of the box can sure get one ahead, and Nambiar has proved his prowess with elan." [28] Critic Shanmugan of OneIndia quoted "Director Bejoy Nambiar has brilliantly come out with two distinct characters" and adding their verdict as "David is a worth watching film." and gave the movie a rating of 3.5/5. [29] Subha J Rao of The Hindu stated "Watch if you love a film that is not packed with action. This one flows by languidly, chronicling inner journeys." [30] Indiaglitz rated the movie 3.25/5 by saying "David is twin story induced in a single film with all elements making it a worthy watch." [31] tikkview.com gives 3.2/5.0 and their review says that "Overall David comeup with a two good stories. Main draw back of David is its too slow and weak script." [32] Bharatstudent.com reviewed "Overall, this is a film could have been a lot better had the sequences been proper.", "Technically well made and an interesting plot, can be watched" and gave 3/5. [33] Emirates247 criticized the movie for the dubbed feeling, but added "Despite its many downfalls and a rather unbefitting end, ‘David’ is a brave movie that must be endorsed." [34] Behindwoods review team noted the film was "A different attempt, backed by some good performances by lead actors, but ends up lacking nativity and pace" and gave it 2.5/5. [2]

david movie review tamil

wogma rating: Add to that never-watched 'To Watch' list ( ? )

David is a slick and classy struggle between right and wrong. If only all three stories had enough meat to make for a 2+ hour film. Only 1.5 of the 3 do.

David (Hindi, Tamil) - Preview

Even though I didn't particularly like Bijoy Nambiar's debut Shaitan , I am looking forward to his next one, David . With Shaitaan I got this distinct feeling that he wanted to put in everything he had ever wanted to put in his films in terms of style and coolness. I hope he has gotten over it.

Anyway, it will be a treat to watch Tabu on big screen again. Other than wanting to see her give a performance I can be in awe of, I'd like to wipe out memories of her participating in a project called Toh Baat Pakki .

Other than that, I'm looking forward to an engaging story that will join the dots between three men separated by decades, the superficial connection being that they are namesakes. The trailer is exciting with the various themes it seems to touch upon.

Not to mention the music has been getting good reviews from all over. So, keeping in mind my take on Shaitan , I should be able to manage a plain slate while walking into David .

Music Reviews : Milliblog - "But where it loses out lyrically, it makes up in audacity and sheer diversity, delivering a vibrant pastiche!" Music Aloud - "8/10" Bollywood Hungama - "3.5/5" Bollyspice - "4.5/5" koimoi - "4.5/5" IBN Live - "3.5/5" Firstpost - "Not the usual Bollywood song-and-dance" MTV - "Out of Control: This song makes you believe in the future of Hinglish; think about it, if you have Hinglish lyrics with the classical voice of Preeti Pillai to sing the chorus. "

With David , Bejoy Nambiar struggles the gray area between right and wrong. Be it love or war - whether an action is right or wrong, many a time, becomes debatable given the situation. Nambiar explores that zone in-between. Unfortunately, only one of the three tales he chooses is compelling and there is a half baked one. Though the third one struggled the most with the dilemma, it seemed more like a comic and romantic relief to take the edge off the seriousness of the other two.

David (London, 1975 - Neil Nitin Mukhesh) is part of a Muslim underworld family. Though he is not a part of the family, he is trusted the most. Yet, the family is keeping some of his personal history from him. Should that change his alliance with the family? The most layered of the three, this is the one that tears its David up the most. The black and white treatment stands in good contrast to David's conflict within.

David (Mumbai, 1999 - Vinay Virmani ) belongs to a lower middle-class Christian family. A local politician accuses his father, a priest, of trying to convert Hindus into Muslims. David's struggle as a common man is much like the situation of the common man today, over a decade later. The build up in this one with David's quest for why he and his family are suffering kept me intrigued. However, it loses steam towards the end. The way it culminates though resonated the most with me.

David (Goa, 2010 - Chiyaan Vikram ) is a Goan village's outcast because his wife left him at the wedding altar. Other than the fact, that that makes no sense, I believe in the human race's capacity to hold one person's misfortunes against him. The simplest of them all this one should have had its David miserable between friendship and love. But, somehow that ground is left uncovered and gets diverted with its humor that shuffles between dark, slapstick and quirky.

One of David 's main problems is the length. Though it has three stories to tell, there are times when the film feels like it is a little all over the place. The only thing holding it together are awesome performance across the board. From the three main leads to Monica Dogra , Tabu , Saurabh Shukla and the people he possesses, right upto Rohini Hatangadi - all give play their bits with conviction.

There is one thing I have begun to love about Bejoy Nembiar's films. The way he picturizes his songs. The most unlikely songs are set against some brutal action sequences and yet they sound and look beautiful. Of course, the rest of the film too is slick and has a classy touch to it. The good news is that the feeling I got in Shaitan that his film is a vehicle to showcase all the "cool" things he ever wanted to have in films, has reduced. So, yet again, I am left looking forward to his next film. If only, it had more to hold the film together.

As far as the connection between the three Davids goes, one David doesn't let the other go out of character while sticking to his roots. The third one, well he's just there waiting to be noticed by one other David. Let's just say this, the three are as connected as you and I. I write what you read, you read what I write. We are all connected by the cosmic energy in between. Call it fate, or call it God's will.

‘Alien: Romulus’ Review: Fede Álvarez’s Back-to-Basics Sequel Is the Summer’s Biggest Letdown

Somehow, the Xenomorph returned.

Of course, that’s exactly what makes them both so valuable as pieces of intellectual property, with the Xenomorph being especially priceless to a corporation whose trillionaire founder died while searching the stars for the secret to eternal life. While there isn’t a lot going on under the surface of Fede Álvarez’s grimy and graceless “ Alien: Romulus ,” the seventh proper installment of its franchise is nothing if not fascinated by deathlessness in all its forms.  Related Stories Carol Kane Scopes Out the Criterion Closet, Grabs ‘All About Eve,’ ‘Local Hero,’ and More ‘The Crow’ Review: Bill Skarsgård Is an Emo Angel of Death in This Pretty Corpse of a Thriller

That, more than its limp efforts to bridge the story gap between Ridley Scott’s prequels and the rest of the saga’s timeline, is what ultimately makes this very August movie feel of a piece with “Prometheus” and “ Covenant ,” even if its emphasis on slaughterhouse thrills cleaves a lot closer to the likes of “Alien: Resurrection” (or the video game “Dead Space,” which embarrasses the scale and imagination of Álvarez’s setpieces at every turn). Absent the patience and world-building of the series’ foundational classics or the wonder and humility of its more recent chapters, “Romulus” is left to look inward, and — like a newly sentient android — reflect on the strange reality of its creation.

That same lust for life naturally extends to the things that we create (e.g. robots, conglomerates, familiar and reliably profitable stories), and it’s what makes a killing machine like the Xenomorph such an ideal foil to our programming. Like all of its characters, “Romulus” simply exists because someone refused to let the idea behind it die. The only thing that sets it apart from the ongoing rush of self-aware meta sequels is how openly — and how ghoulishly — it confronts the primitive impulse of its existence, which it does with a tactlessness disturbing enough to make 20th Century Studios feel like a direct progenitor of Weyland-Yutani’s corporate ethos.

Which isn’t to dismiss this movie for eschewing the high-minded (and admittedly polarizing) curiosity that defined the recent prequels. The problem here isn’t that “Romulus” goes back to the blue-collar survivalism of the original “Alien,” the problem is that it does so poorly, and with precious little understanding of why people cling to it with the combined force of a 1,000 Facehuggers. Where Scott understood the potency of atmosphere and character, Álvarez traffics only in tension and release — and even then just on a shot-by-shot basis. The best part of any “Alien” movie is the slow build-up to when all hell breaks loose, but “Romulus” lacks the patience required for that moment to feel like the rift that it should. Despite telling a story that’s set in the space between films from 1979 and 1986, this interquel is clearly a product of 2024.

As evidence of her empathy, Rain refuses to transfer to another system unless her synthetic “brother” Andy is able to come with her. Where “Covenant” focused on the role that sexual procreation would play in our efforts to colonize the stars, “Romulus” — per its title — places its hope for the future on the bond between siblings. An aging Weyland-Yutani android who Rain’s late father programmed to protect her at all costs, Andy’s outmoded software has left him as naive and helpless as a child (so brilliant and sly on HBO’s “Industry,” David Jonsson embodies the robot’s cognitive impairment with a permanent wince), but his inability to defend himself is the very thing that’s nurtured Rain’s humanity in return. I like to think that might have been part of her dad’s plan.

david movie review tamil

Unfortunately, “Romulus” starts to go off the rails before its ill-fated rabble of twentysomethings even reaches the Renaissance, as the movie is in such a hurry to kill them that it never gives us the chance to care if they die. Both “Alien” and James Cameron’s more action-oriented sequel understood that Xenomorphs would just be sweaty guys in rubber suits without memorable characters for them to kill, but the kids they murder here seldom manage to transcend their types.

High on jolts (too many of which are motivated by the sound of a computer suddenly booting up) and low on more probing scares, “Romulus” isn’t nearly inventive enough to forefront its slaughter at the expense of its soul. Álvarez has some fun with gravity, and the film’s most breathless sequence offers a Facehugging riff on the same tricks that made “Don’t Breathe” such a terrific exercise in suspense, but the setpieces here are missing the kind of sustained terror that even “Alien: Resurrection” got right, and the wide halls and empty corridors of the Renaissance lack the ambiance that made the Nostromo feel like a character unto itself — and that inspired Scott to build his kills around the spectacle of their environment.

The asteroid belt the Renaissance is at risk of crashing into is a nice touch, but Álvarez rushes past all of the station’s more interesting details (don’t show me a dormant space-tram if you’re not going to do something cool with it!), while setting far too much of this movie in the generic spaces around them. At one point the characters recoil in fear at the discovery of an especially horrifying area, only for the dramatic reverse shot to reveal that they’re looking at… a dark cavern?

It’s certainly hard to imagine a cruder way of connecting the dots between the series’ fractured mythology. I’m dancing around a detail that will surely be the subject of many thinkpieces to come, but the film’s refusal to abandon its past — or even to kill it if it has to — personifies the worst instincts of Hollywood’s approach to IP. That it does so with a damning hint of self-awareness, and the implicit admission that it’s a bad idea to the exclusive benefit of corporate interests, is a curious wrinkle, but not curious enough for “Romulus” to get away with having its cake and eating it too.

Especially not when it comes at the direct expense of the film’s heroine, whose choices are meant to represent a more humane solution to the same dilemma. Rain and Andy both deserve better, as do Spaeny and Jonsson, who both find novel and compelling ways of reinventing the “Alien” franchise’s most foundational archetypes. “I’ll fix you,” Rain promises her synthetic brother at one point. It should go without saying that her answer to the crisis has nothing to do with making Andy better, and everything to do with keeping him alive at all costs.

Welcome to the dog days of summer.

This weekend at the box office will be sluggish as two new releases — director Zoe Kravitz’s twisted thriller “ Blink Twice ” and “ The Crow ” reboot starring Bill Skarsgård — target middling debuts. “Blink Twice” is aiming for $7 million to $8 million from 3,000 venues while “The Crow” looks to bring in $6 million to $9 million from 2,500 theaters.

“Blink Twice” is the directorial debut of Kravitz, known for her roles in “Fantastic Beasts,” “The Batman,” Steven Soderbergh’s “Kimi” and Hulu’s series “High Fidelity.” The R-rated psychological thriller has mostly positive reviews (it holds an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes) and follows a cocktail waitress (Naomi Ackie) who meets a tech billionaire (Channing Tatum, Kravitz’s fiancee) and travels to his private island for a luxurious party where things begin to take a sinister turn. “Blink Twice” reportedly carries a $20 million budget, so it should be decently positioned in its theatrical run even if the film doesn’t hit double digits in its box office debut. Amazon MGM is distributing the movie in the U.S. while Warner Bros. is handling the theatrical rollout in the rest of the world.

Despite the late-summer surge from “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Twisters” and “Despicable Me 4,” overall domestic revenues are stubbornly 16% behind last year and 28% behind 2019, the last pre-pandemic year, according to Comscore. Don’t expect late August releases to do much to close that gap.
