What is The Presentation Experience?

The Presentation Experience is a school-based role play experience that allows players to take turns presenting randomly selected topics that are either created by the AI teacher or other players/students in the classroom. Once the teacher calls on you to present, you better be ready—you only have a few minutes to make a great impression! During presentations, other students can clap, scream, jump out of their seat, sleep, burp, and more to interrupt or cheer on their peers. The teacher will do her best to control the class, but it's only a matter of time before things get out of hand!

Building Aviary from a Legacy

Expanded capabilities.

NASA has created a new digital modelling tool for aeronautical engineers to innovate new aircraft designs, building on decades of experience using highly advanced computer code for aviation.

Using this tool, researchers can create simulations of conceptual aircraft featuring never-flown technology and receive detailed data about how it would work.

Named “Aviary” for enclosures where birds are kept and studied, the tool creates virtual models of airplanes based on information provided by the user. In this analogy, Aviary is the enclosure, and the birds are the virtual airplane models.

Researchers can input information about an aircraft’s shape, range, and other characteristics. Then, Aviary creates a corresponding digital model of that airplane.

“Aviary is flexible enough that you can decide what you want to learn more about, then configure it to teach you.”

Aviary is a significant leap in progress. Unlike past aviation modelling tools, Aviary can link with other codes and programs to expand and customize its capabilities.

“We wanted to make it easy to extend the code and tie it in with other tools,” said Jennifer Gratz, who leads Aviary’s integration and development. “Aviary is intentionally designed to be able to integrate disciplines together more tightly.”

Aviary is free and accessible to all. The code continues to grow as contributions are made by the public. The code is hosted on GitHub , along with its key documentation .

Aviary is a descendant of two prior modelling tools created by NASA decades ago: the Flight Optimization System, and the General Aviation Synthesis Program.

These older legacy codes, however, were comparatively limited in terms of flexibility and detail.

“The older legacy codes were not designed to handle these more modern-day concepts such as hybrid-electric aircraft,” Gratz said. “They viewed certain systems as more separated than they really are in the vehicles we envision now.”

Aviary bridges that gap, enabling researchers to seamlessly incorporate detailed information reflecting the more integrated, enmeshed systems needed to model newer aircraft.

The team began creating Aviary by taking the best parts of the legacy codes and merging them, then adding in new code to make Aviary extendable and compatible with other tools.

“That’s one of its most important characteristics,” Gratz said. “Aviary is flexible enough that you can decide what you want to learn more about, then configure it to teach you.”

Learning specific, tailored information ahead of time can inform researchers what direction the aircraft design should take before doing costly flight tests.

Instead of having to use built-in estimates for certain parameters such as a battery’s power level, as would be done with past tools, Aviary users can easily use information generated by other tools with specific information catered to batteries.

Another capability Aviary touts is gradients. A gradient, essentially, is how much a certain value affects another value when changed.

Say a researcher is considering how powerful a battery should be to successfully power an aircraft. Using older systems, the researcher would have to run a separate simulation for each battery power level.

But Aviary can accomplish this task in one simulation by considering gradients.

“You could tell Aviary to figure out how powerful a battery should be to make using it worthwhile. It will run a simulated flight mission and come back with the result,” Gratz said. “Older tools can’t do that without modification.”

Aviary can simulate all these concepts simultaneously – no other modelling tool can easily consider prior legacy tools, separate tools introduced by users, and gradients.

“Other tools have some of these things, but none of them have all of these things,” Gratz said.

What’s more, Aviary comes with extensive documentation .

“Documentation is another important part of Aviary,” Gratz said. “If nobody can understand the tool, nobody can use it. By having a good record of Aviary’s development and changes, more people can benefit. You don’t have to be an expert to use it.”

Michael Bublé and rapper Snoop Dogg are joining the cast as coaches this fall, NBC announced at its upfront presentation at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on May 13.

The crooner and the rapper join returning coaches Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani to round out the  group of all-stars .

“Folks, we’ve got a rookie taking the chair. I can’t wait for him to join us — so I can beat him,” McEntire said onstage during the event. “Everyone please welcome the D-O-double-G, Snoop Dogg!”

The legendary rapper then took the stage and put a twist on the lyrics to his 1994 classic “Gin and Juice.” 

“With so much drama in the LBC, it’s kinda hard being Snoop on NBC,” he rapped.

Snoop then shared his excitement about joining the group.

“Since Reba is the queen of ‘The Voice’ who brings the sparkle, I can be the king who brings the style, the funk and the fun,” he said.

He previously appeared on “The Voice” as a mega mentor in Season 20, and Bublé is also no stranger to the show. The Grammy-winning singer was an advisor to Blake Shelton’s team in Season 3.

Snoop and Bublé will replace Chance the Rapper, the country duo Dan + Shay and singer John Legend as coaches in Season 26.

Antero foundation donates $10k for mountwood park museum expansion.

PARKERSBURG — Mountwood Park’s Museum and Visitors’ center will be going through much-needed enhancements thanks in part to a $10,000 donation from the Antero Foundation.

Announced during a special check presentation at Mountwood Park Thursday, the donation will support existing visitor experience programming as well as the expansion of the Volcano History Museum to commemorate the town’s early energy boom.

“Our state has a rich history of producing oil and gas and one of the best ways we can honor that history is by enhancing the ability to learn about and embrace it,” says Kevin Ellis, regional senior vice president of Antero Resources and board member of the Antero Foundation. “Antero is committed to supporting our community and we’re grateful to contribute to Mountwood Park in this way.”

Since the museum’s opening in 2012, Friends of Mountwood Park — the fundraising organization benefiting Mountwood Park — has gradually added items depicting life in Volcano and its surrounding oil fields.

Recent additions such as three archaeological field schools, model rigs, and a large wheelhouse have also increased visitors for the park. The additions provide visitors with more exhibits and information but have led to crowded displays that can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate.

The foundation’s donation will continue this growth momentum while helping the museum double in size and add new displays in the additional space.

“We’re grateful to Antero for this generous donation that will assist us in providing the best visitor experience possible when guests come to learn about the unique history of Volcano,” said Mike Naylor, treasurer and history chair with Friends of Mountwood Park.

Star in your own ‘Friends’ episode at new immersive experience in Boston

Fans of “Friends” can be one of the stars of the show now that a new and expanded immersive experience inspired by the iconic 1990s sitcom has debuted in Boston.

“When you come here, you get to be the celebrity. You get to experience this as if you are part of the show,” Kelly Easterling, Vice President of Experiential Design and Production for “The Friends Experience” said. “We hope that you come here and feel like a celebrity yourself.”

In honor of the 30th anniversary of the show “ The Friends Experience ,” called “The One in Boston,” will officially open on Friday, May 17. The experience comes with several photo opportunities as part of recreations from some of the show’s most memorable moments.

Guests can take photos while trying to “pivot” Ross’ couch up the stairs, reclining in the boys’ apartment chairs, or hanging around the table in Monica’s kitchen.

In between photoshoots, you can walk through the halls and learn more about each of the “Friends” characters, production, and costume design. Super-fans can read through Rachel’s 18-page letter to Ross, which is reimagined on the wall, or step behind the mic and sing their rendition of “Smelly Cat” just like Phoebe.

“What we tried to do is capture some of these iconic moments and spaces that people really associate with the the ‘Friends’ TV show and give them an opportunity to reconnect with the ‘Friends’ television show that they’ve come to know and love over many years,” Easterling said. “We’re thrilled with the way that this kind of flows, and we think that guests are really going to enjoy this experience.”

The first “Friends Experience” in Boston was a pop-up that came to the city for the 25th anniversary of “Friends” in 2019. The success from that 45-day pop-up, which sold out almost immediately, proved that there were a ton of “Friends” fans in Boston. So the team knew they had to come back to city, but with more to offer.

“The pop-up in 2019 was a fun, fresh look at ‘The Friends Experience,’” Easterling said. “Now we have 12 different areas over three different floors that are...more fleshed out.”

Unlike the 2019 pop-up, “The One in Boston,” will stick around much longer — until Jan. 19, 2025 in fact.

“The One in Boston” also differs from “The Friends Experience” flagship location in New York City in the sense that it is curated a different way, according to Easterling.

“The New York experience, what we have, is more of a linear experience where we kind of take you on a journey,” he said. “I think [what] our Boston friends are going to love the most is that they get to really create this journey themselves.”

“It’s almost like a playground,” Easterling added, “where you can explore and journey through this space and take the time that you need, take pictures, and linger and dwell where you choose.”

Popular quotes from each of the characters and a “Who dated whom?” timeline wall help round out the immersive experience. Of course, no “Friends” experience would be complete without stopping by Central Perk and sitting on the legendary orange couch. Guests can also buy exclusive merchandise onsite.

Super fans should also know that “The Friends Experience” — both in New York City and Boston — is the only place where they can buy a Hugsy (Joey’s most prized possession).

Tickets for “The One in Boston,” starting at $22, are officially on sale. Tickets come with timed entry, but people can try to walk up and get space if there is one available. There are even QR codes on the windows of the experience, so people can check available time slots if they’re just walking by and want to check it out.

The experience is located at 343 Newbury St. in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood.

What’s new in ArcGIS StoryMaps (May 2024)

This journey started about 5 years ago (a little longer if you count from the initial beta release ) with a dream of creating a next-generation storytelling tool for ArcGIS. Fast-forward to today—200 software releases later—and we remain amazed by all the engaging, gorgeous, informative, and impactful stories being told by the community using ArcGIS StoryMaps.

And of course we haven’t slowed down adding new features and capabilities. Earlier this year marked the introduction of briefings, a slide-based storytelling format, that helps you communicate and tell stories in new ways. This month we’ve added more features to briefings, stories, and collections. Here’s a rundown of what’s new this month:

Add tables and code to briefings

Configure analytics for briefings, show date for collections, hide story cover, more image formats, and more….

The ability to add tables to a story was added back in August 2023 , which happened to be the same time briefings were released in beta. These features have now come together and you’re able to add nicely formatted tabular information to your briefings.

It’s extremely useful to be able to summarize statistical data for an audience in a table or provide a status update in an easily digestible form. Check out this video see see how easy it is to create a table.

Additionally, the code block is available in briefings. If you have Python scripts, JavaScript code, CSS snippets, or code in another programming language, you can now paste them into a briefing to share with your audience. The code block is also a great way to share and explain Arcade scripts with your colleagues. You’ll probably want to take advantage of the built-in syntax highlighting, and you can add line numbers if they are helpful. Here’s an example of how to add code and configure the helpful options that are available.

You may be familiar with using Google Analytics or Adobe Analytics to track audience engagement with your stories. Now you can use these services to track views and other reader interactions for your published briefings as well.

The process for setting this up for a briefing is similar to how it works for a story. You’ll find a familiar looking Analytics tab in the Briefing settings where you can choose the analytics service you’d like to use and enter your configuration information.

Showing a date on the cover was something you have been able to do for stories and briefings, and now this is available for collections. Just hop into the Collection settings and select the date display option you’d like and the date will be visible to your readers.

We’ve heard from some advanced authors who sometimes want to create a story without a cover. While you can already do this in specific situations, like when you add a story to a collection or when you are embedding a story in another website, some people wanted a persistent way to hide the cover for a story. This option is now available in the story settings.

There are a few things to be aware of when activating this option. It is best used in a few specific situations, such as when creating a story for a demonstration you’re delivering or for an unattended kiosk at a museum, exhibit, or conference. Since important information about the story is hidden from viewers when this option is enabled, the story will not be eligible to appear in web search results so you’ll see that option disabled when you publish.

ArcGIS StoryMaps already supports five of the most common image file formats (JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, and SVG), and you can now use more types of images including HEIC, HEIF, TIFF/TIF, and WEBP. These file types can be uploaded directly in the story, briefing, or collection builders without the need to convert them to another format first.

If you missed it, support was also added for more video and audio file types over the last few months. The list of supported video file types now includes MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM, MKV, and for audio the list is MP3, WAV, OGG, ACC, and M4A for audio.

We mentioned this last month, but a new featured theme is available for the upcoming 2024 Esri User Conference. Check it out in the featured theme gallery! Also, the maximum number of rows for a table in a story has been increased to 11, which includes the heading row, so you now have enough rows to create a “top 10” list.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – With summer right around the corner, Grand Rapids teens can still sign up for a free camp offering hands-on experience in television, radio and podcast production, media literacy and filmmaking.

This year, the annual Media Makers summer camp is offering a new $175 weekly stipend to participating students, in an effort to increase accessibility to students from low-income households and reduce the financial barrier of choosing summer camp over a job.
