Chup Review: Dulquer Salmaan Carries The Film, Sunny Deol Delivers A Star Turn

Every filmmaker isn't an artist. Neither is every film a work of art. Similarly, not every movie reviewer is a film critic. Chup - Revenge of the Artist - ignores these distinctions between the magical and the humdrum to craft a thriller about a serial killer who believes criticism is evil and targets film critics for their opinions.

The technical attributes of the film - the camerawork and the lighting, the editing, the soundscape and the production design - are perfectly orchestrated to create an air of foreboding. They yield the desired results. Sadly, most of it lingers on the surface, leaving the heart of the plot rather soulless and incapable of triggering emotions any stronger than mild repulsion at the graphic and gory killings by a deranged man.

A mild-mannered Bandra florist Danny (Dulquer Salmaan), an enthusiastic rookie reporter Nila Menon (Shreya Dhanwanthary), a hardened police investigator Arvind Mathur (Sunny Deol) and a business-like criminal psychologist Zenobia Shroff (Pooja Bhatt) serve as the four pillars on which the screenplay, written by Balki with film reviewer Raja Sen and Rishi Virmani, stands. And then there is Guru Dutt. More on him later.

The 135-minute film opens with the gruesome killing of a veteran film critic, found bloodied in the loo of his own apartment. Before the halfway mark, three other murders of middle-aged men - yes, only men - from the same fraternity rock the city. In the course of the fourth kill - an art gallery is the site of the crime - the identity of the killer is revealed.

Leading up to this point, the film provides other visual clues for the audience to be able to guess who the serial killer is. The mystery surrounding the gruesome murders does not take firm roots because Chup goes back and forth between the who/why-dunnit and a blossoming romance between a lonesome flower seller and a young woman who has only just moved to Mumbai to further her journalistic prospects.

Post-interval, both the police and the audience anticipate another murder but what we get is a tame cat-and-mouse game involving a decoy critic and a fake negative review of a widely loved film. It ends with evocatively lit sequences that pay tribute to both Guru Dutt and his storied cinematographer V.K. Murthy, with replications of folkloric visual compositions from two of the duo's most celebrated collaborations - Pyaasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool .

Not only are these two films frequently evoked either directly and through their timeless songs, a couple of the murders are staged with the haunting SD Burman-composed numbers playing on the background. Never before have the sounds of Guru Dutt's two classic films accompanied the spilling of blood on the big screen.

Original, audacious, godawful - call them what you will, these moments are among the more memorable ones in a film that seems to take itself far too seriously for its own good. Largely devoid of humour, Chup could have used some darkly comic touches to go with its twisted plot.

What the unusual premise lacks, therefore, are a few additional layers that could have helped it transcend the superficial binary of good and bad, appreciative and harsh critiques.

Chup hinges on the inference that Guru Dutt was pushed to an untimely death by the fact that critics pilloried Kaagaz Ke Phool , a deeply personal essay that enumerated the struggles of being a filmmaker in a highly commercialised industry. Much is also made of the fact that the film in question is today universally regarded as a masterpiece. The first supposition is specious, the second is spot-on.

The history of art and literature - and cinema, too - abounds in instances of works that were trashed at the time of their appearance but then went on to grow in value and influence with the passage of time. Indeed, the value of art is rarely determined by instant critical approval (this can only gurantee immediate material gains) but by its capacity for longevity as a cultural artefact. In fact, somebody in Chup acknowledges that Kaagaz Ke Phool was a film way ahead of its time.

So what, pray, is the big deal? Well, Chup ties itself up in knots in trying to find a rationale for the actions of the killer, laboriously delving into the character's past and the long-term impact it has had on his mind and heart. Too pat, too casual, too bereft of imagination. Not something Guru Dutt would be proud of.

Geeta Dutt's ethereal voice comes in handy every time Danny and Nila meet. A chance meeting - looking for flowers for her visually impaired mother, Nila finds that Danny grows tulips - a rarity of rarities in Mumbai - in his backyard. Tulips and Geeta Dutt in a 2022 Hindi movie! Wow, talk of method in the madness.

In a way, Chup has the feel of an extended cinematic exercise by a troll intent on showing film critics their place in the food chain. It errs in suggesting that those that pass judgement on cinema for a living - the film gets Amitabh Bachchan (playing himself) to assert that cinema needs critics for its growth - wield the power to make or break the fate of a film.

They definitely don't in the case of movies that have a life beyond instant reviews either because the star power that drives them is too immense to be affected by criticism or owing to the sheer purity of the art inherent in it. The latter was true of Kaagaz Ke Phool , an ambitious leap of artistic faith that sank not because it fell short, but because in 1959 neither critics nor audiences were ready for it.

One performance that stands out in Chup is Shreya Dhanwanthary's. She fleshes out a film-loving journo who dares to put her life on the line to achieve her goal and literally at that (like filmmakers of the ilk of Guru Dutt, Ritwik Ghatak and John Abraham did), and gets the nuances right.

Dulquer Salmaan, as always, oozes easy-going charm. If only he went just a tad easier on that aspect of his personality, he would have done more justice to the wide range of emotions that he is required to pack into the performance. Be that as it may, he carries the film on shoulders with aplomb.

Sunny Deol delivers a restrained star turn that goes slightly off-track in the climactic passages. Pooja Bhatt does enough to leave you wondering why more of her character wasn't written into the film.

Chup is a muddle but certainly not of monumental proportions. That it ventures into uncharted territory is undeniably commendable. But it needed something more to elevate itself above a mere idiosyncratic concept.

R Balki's latest movie, Chup, starring Dulquer Salmaan and Sunny Deol, is an intense and thought-provoking thriller that tries to examine the true purpose of film criticism. The flick luckily does so without being preachy or overly dramatic. Chup revolves around a serial killer who brutally murders critics for insulting artistes with their ruthless remarks. The authorities soon rope in the bold cop Arvind Mathur (Sunny) to investigate the case. He finds a few striking similarities between the killings, which sets the stage for a cat-and-mouse game.

Broadly speaking, a thriller can work only if it packs a punch without trying too hard to do so. Take Drishyam, for instance. The Mohanlal-led movie, which was remade in Hindi under the same title with Ajay Devgn in the lead, attained cult status as everything about it felt as organic as possible. This is exactly where Chup succeeds. The film moves at its own pace initially as director R Balki carefully constructs its world. Given the genre, violence is an integral part of the narrative. None of the scenes try to shock the audience. The focus instead is on using these scenes to explore the serial killer's psyche.

The same applies to the big twists as well. The work, despite being obvious mainly as the staging, is as good as it gets.

The writing, however, peaks in the romantic scenes. Dulquer Salmaan's exchanges with Shreya Dhanwanthary cater to those fond of breezy yet realistic love stories. There is absolutely nothing filmi or pretentious about these sequences.

The film features several short yet watchable scenes that examine the complex relationship between art and its critics. The second half feels a bit slow in the portions but does a fair job of setting the stage for the thrilling finale. The closing sequences of Chup touch upon a sensitive topic while celebrating the magic of cinema.

Chup's true beauty lies in the fact that it manages to deal with three distinct aspects or subplots rather competently. None of these tracks feel undercooked.

Coming to the performances, Dulquer does justice to a complex character. His chemistry with Shreya may initially remind one of his breezy rapport with Nithya Menen in OK Kanmani.

The way he deals with the scenes depicting his character's trauma, however, is quite different from the approach adopted by Fahadh Faasil in films such as Joji and Maheshinte Pratikaaram. FaFa used his eyes to internalise his characters. DQ, on the other hand, uses his body language to bring out the complexities of his character.

Shreya, who plays a young journalist, channels her character's innocence .

It is, however, Sunny Doel who proves to be the scene stealer here. The veteran actor delivers a beautifully restrained performance. He packs a punch without even flexing his muscles. The natural intensity that he brings to the table in Chup may remind one of his work in the underrated Ghayal 2.

Saranya and Pooja Bhatt are a bit underutilised. The former, however, makes her presence felt despite the limited screen time.

The dialogues have situational appeal, and lines such as 'Scorcese nahi Shetty' and 'Galti Se Tax' stand out. The editing is good as Chup doesn't drag. The romantic song featured in the film, however, could have been catchier. The other technical aspects are up to the mark.

To sum up, Chup is a highly watchable and layered thriller that may 'silence' its critics, courtesy of its refreshing concept.

Chup Movie Review:

I watched a movie called Chup about a psychopath who kills film critics when they give inappropriate stars to the movie and not based on their merit. Well, since I am also going to write the review, I wasn’t scared some killer will come and slash my throat but it is the thought behind the movie that made me think otherwise. I started questioning myself if the reviewers are always this harsh or if the reviewers are the killers who kill a fan’s morale to even watch the film, to kill a director’s passion for the movie. Yes, our job is actually to critique the cinema which the makers put their heart and soul into it and we sometimes strip them entirely with our writing.

There are some reviewers who don’t think twice to mince the movie with their harsh words and then comes the Chup movie that tries to convey that the cinema is art but if someone is critiquing it, it has to be constructive criticism and not just bash them wryly. Nevertheless, talking about Chup in this review, R Balki has narrated his love for cinema that he wrapped with suspense and thriller. After a while, I enjoyed a thriller drama that kept me at the edge of my seat. There was a constant feeling of what will happen next and how will the cops unveil the killer.

Chup is the story of a psychopath killer who is targeting film critics. A series of bizarre and disturbing murders rock the city of Mumbai. Film critics are being killed week after week with the release of every new film. Arvind Mathur, Head of Crime Branch Mumbai, is tasked with solving the case. With the help of Zenobia, a criminal psychologist, he tries to understand the mind of the killer to trap him.

Star Performance:

Sunny Deol plays the role of inspector Arvind Mathur, Head of Crime Branch Mumbai who sets on a mission to seize the psychopath killer on loose. He plays his part perfectly well with utmost intensity and zest. It is so good to see Sunny is a profound role after a very long time. He adds gravitas to his character that doesn’t leave you disappointed.

Dulquer Salmaan plays the role of a florist named Danny and oh man, he is a treat to watch. To be honest, I have seen very few films of him and now I regret that why didn’t watch his movies before. He is a terrific actor and his performance is par excellence in this movie. After seeing him in Sita Ramam, I can’t imagine Dulquer playing this complex character. His character has two sides and his transformation in the movie is impressive AF! Now, I can’t imagine any other actor playing this role because he justified it with great finesse. Dulquer definitely steals the show with his powerful performance and I have become his fan now.

Shreya Dhanwanthary essays the role of an entertainment journalist and Danny’s love interest. She does a commendable job in the movie. She tries to prove that she has a lot of capabilities as an actor and that is impressive.

Pooja Bhatt plays the role of Zenobia, a criminal psychologist who loves films and helps the police to understand the criminal. She is seen in an extended cameo and adds more depth and freshness to the script.

Direction/ Screenplay:

With a filmography of Cheeni Kum, Shamitabh, Ki & Ka, Pad Man, R Balki comes up with a thriller drama Chup that makes me speechless, to be precise. He is often seen telling light-hearted stories with a lot of meaning; however, he outdoes himself this time as he narrates a nail-biting story to the audience. Considering that it is a thriller drama, R Balki keeps the intensity intact while showcasing his love for the cinema.

But the best part that left me in awe was keeping the essence of the classic cinema, the Guru Dutt era. He used the songs of Dutt right from Jaane Kya Main Suni to Waqt Ne Kiya Kya which only added a lot of weight to the movie. It will make you forget about the murder thriller but will drift your mind to an era of pure blissful cinema. Balki really does a fantastic job with her direction.

There was never a moment where I felt he is losing his grip apart from the climax scene. Balki patiently and artistically unfolds the aspect of a killer and his chronicle; however, the climax seems like he was in a hurry. Keeping the vigour of the story in mind, I like the fact that he completely ditched the unnecessary drama but it seems like the climax was rushing.

Conclusion:

In totality, Chup: Revenge of the Artist is an out-of-the-box concept that will surely keep you hooked till the end. Chup is an interesting watch and if you are reading the review then I would highly recommend watching it. R Balki has delivered his finest work that is backed by powerful performances from Sunny Deol and Dulquer Salmaan. A story that has never been seen before and that makes it special and interesting. After a long time, I’m seeing a different thriller drama that really hit me hard not just as a critic but as a viewer as well. I’m going with 3.5 stars for R Balki’s narration and of course, Salmaan’s performance who is the heart and the soul of the film.

After Akshay Kumar's 2018 film PadMan , R Balki's next is a psychological romantic thriller titled Chup: Revenge Of The Artist. The film which is scheduled to hit the big screens this Friday (September 23), features Sunny Deol, Dulquer Salmaan, Pooja Bhatt and Shreya Dhawanthary in leading roles.

Chup is reportedly a homage to one of Indian cinema's greatest filmmakers Guru Dutt who is known for movies like Pyaasa , Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam, and Kaagaz Ke Phool. The commercial failure of Kaagaz Ke Phool affected Dutt so much that he never helmed a film ever again.

R Balki's Chup revolves around a serial killer who goes on a killing spree, targeting film critics for giving poor ratings to movies. Sunny Deol essays the role of a cop in this thriller. Meanwhile, the first review of this much-anticipated film is out, and according to veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, it's R Balki's best film.

Mahesh Bhatt's daughter and actress Pooja Bhatt who is a part of Chup , took to her Instagram page to share her father's verdict for her film.

Sharing some pictures of the filmmaker from Chup 's special screening, she wrote, "So the man who has never remained #Chup about his life nor about other burning issues & taught me to do the same no matter what it cost, watched the film with the cast & crew yesterday..His verdict- "Loved, loved simply loved the film. It has audacity & stands tall all alone. That's why it sparkles. I am a Balki fan now. This is his best film." Mahesh Bhatt."

Meanwhile, the makers of Chup have organised a special public free preview of the film three days prior to its theatrical release in ten cities including Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Delhi, Gurgaon, Kolkata, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Bangalore. According to reports, the special free view got sold out in 10 minutes across the country.

The serial killer thriller Chup stars Dulquer Salmaan, fresh off his success in Sita Rama, who plays the film director, Pooja Bhatt, Sunny Deol and Shreya Dhanwanthary. The film, to be released on September 23, has been co-produced by Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Anil Naidu, Dr Jayantilal Gada (PEN Studios) and Gauri Shinde. The original story is by R. Balki, the screenplay and dialogues have been co-written by Balki, critic-turned-writer Raja Sen and Rishi Virmani.

The trailer for R Balki’s Chup , starring Sunny Deol, Pooja Bhatt, Dulquer Salmaan and Shreya Dhanwanthary is out. A psychological thriller, the film sees Sunny Deol trying to track down a serial killer — an unusual one at that, as this particular criminal carves stars into his victims bodies as they kill them. Their target are film critics, who get a rating carved on their forehead as they are mercilessly murdered.

The trailer itself is gory with people being murdered in gruesome ways, interspersed with moments of an eerie romance between Dulquer and Shreya. The film also recalls Guru Dutt’s depression after his film Kagaz Ke Phool was trashed by critics. There are some very questionable dialogues such as, “A film is a director’s baby, kisse ke bacche ka rape kaise kar sakte ho?” and Pooja Bhatt emphasises the film’s point and messaging, “You critics are killers.”

In an interview with PTI, Dulquer had said that he is eagerly awaiting to see how the ‘experimental’ film is received. “When Balki sir offered me Chup, I was shocked and said, ‘Are you really thinking about me for this role?’ Because it’s something I haven’t done before. It’s not typical in any form. I think for him also, it’s an experimental film but it’s something I am very curious about. All of you will also be curious about it when it comes out,” he had said.

The film was announced on the death anniversary of the legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt last year. Balki said that Chup is an “ode to the sensitive artiste”.

Balki is one of the renowned filmmakers in Bollywood who always comes up with off-beat subjects like Paa, Shamitaabh and Ki & Ka. This time, he came up with another unique storyline in his latest flick Chup. Starring talented actors like Dulquer Salmaan, Sunny Deol, Shreya Dhanwantary and Pooja Bhatt in prominent roles, this movie created a good buzz among the audiences. Let’s see how it is.

Mumbai City is shaken up by the serial killings of film critics. Head of Crime Branch, Aravind Mathur (Sunny Deol) takes charge to investigate these serial killings. He founds out that the serial killer follows a pattern while selecting the critics he wants to assassinate. On the flip side, Danny (Dulquer Salmaan) is a florist in Bandra. He falls in love with an entertainment reporter named Nila Menon (Shreya Dhanwantary). But eventually, they get connected with this case. What is their connection with the serial killer? Did Aravind Mathur able to solve the case? These factors form the major crux of the movie.

What’s Entertaining & What’s Boring:

The premise of Chup is very intriguing. Until now, we haven’t seen a film about a killer killing film critics. Balki scored brownie points right with his story idea. He builds the story very well and keeps us hooked to our seats right from the first scene. The buildup has been done very well in the first half. Even the track between Dulquer and Shreya Dhanwantary looks fresh and interesting.

Once the identity of the killer gets revealed, things get boring. Especially in the second half, you know where the movie is heading and the scenes are written by taking so much liberty. After a point, you know what will be the climax and you get bored for sure.

Performance of Cast & Crew:

Dulquer Salmaan shined in his role. This is one of his career-best performances. After impressing with his class act in Sita Ramam, Dulquer comes up with an entirely different kind of role in this movie. If this movie manages to do well in Bollywood, Dulquer can be called the new pan-India star without any doubt.

Sunny Deol fit well in the shoes of a police officer. His seniority and demeanour suit well for the character. Shreya Dhanwantrary is charming. She got a meaty role and she used it to her best. This can be a breakthrough film for her in Bollywood. Pooja Bhatt is good in her extended cameo. It is good to see both Sunny and Pooja together on the big screen once again.

First Half & Second Half:

The first half is highly engaging right from the first scene. Balki develops the world of Chup in a very interesting way. The investigation part has been dealt with very well in the first half and we keep guessing until the interval point.

The identity of the killer gets revealed towards the end of the first half. Later, the film becomes predictable. Instead of taking time to bring the killer to the police, Balki should have written the second half in a more gripping way. Compared to the first half, second half falls flat.

Chup is definitely an interesting film to watch in theatres. It has a unique story idea complemented by powerhouse performances, thrilling elements and a great background score. The second half is a letdown. Nevertheless, you can give it a try.
