My favourite leader is Mahatma Gandhi who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights and independence of his people. Born in 1869 in Porbandar, India. His ideas and actions continue to influence people today, and he is considered one of the greatest leaders in history. I only hope that I can follow some of his principles in my life.

This campaign was a symbol of resistance against British rule and became a turning point in the independence movement. Gandhi was also a spiritual leader and believed in the importance of living a simple and humble life. He embraced a philosophy of self-sufficiency and believed that people should rely on their own resources and abilities rather than relying on others.

Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolent resistance and self-sufficiency has inspired many people to adopt a more sustainable and compassionate way of living. My Inspiration

One incident that inspires me the most about Gandhi, is the Salt Satyagraha of 1930. This was a non-violent protest against the British-imposed salt tax in India, and it was a significant moment in the Indian independence movement. Gandhi believed that the salt tax was a symbol of British oppression and he saw the Salt Satyagraha as an opportunity to unite the people of India against British rule.

He called for a nationwide protest in which people would march to the sea and collect their own salt, defying the salt tax and the British law that banned the production of salt by Indians.

This incident inspires me because it shows the power of nonviolent resistance and the ability of one person to bring about change. His leadership and determination were instrumental in leading India to independence and his legacy continues to inspire people around the world today.

How Long Should a Leadership Essay Be?

The length of the leadership essay depends on what the college or application system says. Thankfully, this is the one part of the essay that you don’t need to question. Nearly every school will provide a word limit, typically ranging from 250 words (for supplemental essays) potentially all the way up to 1,000 words.

In the rare event that you don’t see an obvious word limit, stick to a maximum of about 500 to 600 words.

Invariably, every congregation of human beings, be it at the micro level of religious or other groups and communities, or at the macro level of societies and nations, is bound to be headed by someone who stands out above the others and acts as a guide or a leader. Why is a leader necessary? What makes a leader a leader?

Looking at any sort of animal society one factor becomes immediately clear, namely division of labor. It is essential for the proper functioning of any society that work be clearly defined and assigned to different individuals, or groups of individuals, within the society. In a primitive society, the areas of work may just be food gathering, rearing young ones and defending the colony or society against intruders and predators. A more complex society, any human society for example, will have highly evolved and differentiated areas of work. In both cases, nevertheless, an individual would be required to supervise activities in each specialized area of work. These individuals, in turn, may be superseded by another individual who would coordinate and supervise their work. A leader is thus essential for smooth and proper functioning of any society animal or human, primitive or highly evolved.

What are the qualities which go on to constitute a leader? Going by the prime responsibility of a leader which is to ensure that the society or group functions effectively and in a healthy manner, a leader must be socially aware and conscious. Other qualities generally considered essential for a leader include a magnetic personality, highly developed communication skills, courage, physical fitness. acumen of mind, pragmatism, tolerance and care for others. A leader must be capable of envisioning the future reality of his or her society and be able to effectively and convincingly communicate it to ‘the people. A leader should be totally committed to the cause and should be prepared to go to all extents of self-sacrifice for the betterment of the society and the realization of his or her ideals. How does one become a leader? In monarchies and similar authoritarian societies leaders acquire their prerogative to lead and rule by birth. The eldest son (or daughter) in a monarch’s family automatically inherits the position of the leader (monarch) under certain conditions. These conditions could be the demise of the monarch or his incapability to rule and govern. But monarchies and authoritarian societies are on the decline with more and more societies and nations opting for democracy. Under a democratic set-up, leadership normally is not reduced to a hereditary right of a particular family. The whole process of selection of a leader itself becomes a democratic procedure. Such a choice has the advantage of ensuring that only a person with genuine capabilities and qualifications Would emerge as a leader. Since leadership is becoming a highly evolved field relying not just on basic inherent qualities but also on vast and specialized knowledge, it is but natural that chosen persons should be trained and educated to emerge as successful leaders.

One major attraction of leadership is the immense power the position incorporates. It is unfortunate that many people motivated solely by their greed for power aspire to become leaders and often become so too; they cause damage to the social fabric through their selfish preoccupations. Nepotism in bureaucratic and private sectors is a clear-cut example of misuse of power. Another important precondition for a leader, therefore, is that the leader should not allow power to corrupt him or her. A leader’s prime motivation to lead should stem from his or her dedication to the cause of the particular group, society or nation and not from his or her greed for power.

A leader is necessary for a group, society or nation. Without a capable leader a society generally tends to degenerate, fall victim to decadence and finally disintegrate. Good leaders are immensely popular, enjoy massive support and often leave an indelible impression on a nation’s character besides providing standards of excellence and dedication.

This is because only a stress-resistant leader has sufficient capabilities to overcome any complexity and not let the anxiety and stress prevent him or her from making proper decisions. Besides, such a leader will most likely have a positive influence on the team, as long as leading by example will motivate the team members to attain the same emotional stability. What is so far familiar about stress resistance as an effective leader’s feature is that it can be either innate or attained. However, although some researchers admit that emotional stability is something one is born with, it is not entirely true; many people still put a great effort into self-improvement, changing the attitude to unfortunate situations, and so on. Therefore, being resistant to stress can be mostly attributed to a personality.

An ability to make high-quality decisions most likely determines the chances for an enterprise’s success. In particular, such quality is incredibly fundamental for a company of any size and professional orientation. Additionally, it is one of the top tasks of a good leader to make final decisions. A deceitful person may attract people by way of manipulation; however, he will soon lose his credibility.

  • Communication

A leader does not think of himself as superior to you and thus does not believe in maintaining a distance. He rather ensures a flow of two-way communication to share ideas, discuss issues and maintain a cordial relation.

  • Self-Confidence

The level of self-confidence leaders possess is impeccable. They are sure about themselves and know exactly how to put their point across to inspire their audience. Good leaders also have confidence in their team.

  • Transparency

Good leaders do not hide facts or plays games. They maintain transparency while dealing in both personal and professional relationships. This is one of their traits for which they are highly trusted and respected.

A person who is impatient loses temper frequently and can never qualify to be a good leader. Possessing patience is one of the main keys to becoming a good leader. Only if a person is patient can he understand the mistakes of others and help them evolve.

A good leader has the ability to inspire others and instil leadership qualities in his subordinates to generate future leaders.

How to be a great 21st-century CEO

To answer those questions, we identified 200 highly successful CEOs and conducted in-depth interviews with 67 of them. We found that there is no simple recipe for success, but there is virtue in simplicity. Indeed, the CEOs we interviewed could describe their business strategy in an elevator ride up Shanghai Tower.

We also found that, in a sense, all CEOs have the same responsibilities, such as working with the board, engaging stakeholders, setting direction, and creating a positive culture. What separates the best from the rest is how they approach these tasks. All excelled at some, were good at the rest—and knew the difference. All are world-class integrators. And all applied a distinctive set of mindsets against these responsibilities. In our own effort at simplicity, we identified the six mindsets that characterize great CEOs.

Be bold. In times of uncertainty, it can be tempting to minimize the downside. However, that all but guarantees either mediocrity or decline. Successful CEOs  want to avoid making mistakes, of course, but they also act boldly, actively seeking significant opportunities. They raise the aspirations of the company, and they look for intersections where the business and the market meet. In effect, they are excellent futurists and thus can define the right vision. While they will cut their losses if a move is a dud, they stick to the strategy. The vision comes first; financial performance flows from that.

Treat the soft stuff as the hard stuff. Only one in three strategies is successfully implemented—in large part because change generates resistance. That is why the “soft stuff”—that is, matters related to people and culture—can be the hardest stuff of all to get right. Research has found that companies that solve the soft stuff are more than twice as likely (from 30 to 79 percent) to execute a strategy successfully. 1 Scott Keller and Bill Schaninger, Beyond Performance 2.0: A Proven Approach to Leading Large-Scale Change , Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons, 2019. To carry their organization with them, leaders need to make the case for change, and then keep track of results. 

Solve for the team’s psychology. To build high-performing leadership teams, the best CEOs start with roles, not people, asking what the most important jobs are and then finding people who can do those jobs. And they design for overall functionality, bringing in a wide range of expertise. CEOs must engage with each individual while keeping some distance. And, again, the soft stuff counts.

Help directors help the business. The board is the CEO’s boss, but an awkward one—a lot of people, infrequently seen. Like any relationship, the bedrock is trust. That means being open, honest, and prompt about plans and problems. Bad news is, well, bad, but delivering it is also a chance for the board to help, which is its function. CEOs should establish a strong relationship with the lead director and check in with other directors once or twice a year. Finally, introduce the board to the company by connecting the board to managers. As Piyush Gupta, the longtime CEO of Singapore’s DBS Group, put it: “The board, to me, is a partner, and they can talk to anyone in my management team. Start with “Why?” Purpose can be difficult to define. At the very least, it should be powerful enough to inspire people, simple enough to be readily understood, and make business sense. And purpose matters: companies with a clear social purpose have significantly outperformed the S&P 500 over the past 20 years. 3 The business case for purpose , a joint report from EY and Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, 2015. The best CEOs ask themselves why their company exists, then make purpose an intrinsic part of the business model, knowing that testing strategy against purpose can open up new areas of growth. Leading with purpose can also enhance employee well-being and build loyalty.

Do what only you can do. Being a CEO is a 24/7 job, but no one can work that way. Great CEOs make it a priority to manage themselves to ensure that they are not being pulled apart. That is obviously personal, but we did find some commonalities. The most important is self-discipline, particularly regarding the use of time. Old-school techniques such as lists, stars, and color coding crop up often as time-management techniques. At the same time, the CEOs we spoke with also build flexibility into their schedule—to respond to the unexpected or simply to think. Many combine high-intensity work with recovery periods, whether that is a ten-minute break between meetings or playing the piano. Ultimately, managing personal effectiveness is about developing a sense of perspective, and then using that to see into the future.

No book can create a great CEO, any more than a boxing manual can produce a Manny Pacquiao. But in business, as in boxing, there is such a thing as good technique. CEOs matter: we calculated that the 200 CEOs we identified created additional economic value of about $5 trillion . By identifying the mindsets that characterize great leadership, we believe that excellence can be cultivated—now and in the future.
