A questionnaire: what do you like to read?

In this language arts worksheet, children consider the various types of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction that exist and pick the types of reading they like best. Bonus: your child is encouraged to write a list of preferred types of reading using correct spelling and punctuation.

Comparing two stories

How are these stories similar? How are they different? In this set of reading comprehension worksheets, your child will get practice reading, understanding, and comparing two different texts.

Finding key points

In this reading worksheet, your child will read a short informational passage and then underline key points and answer questions about the language and content of the passage.

Following instructions

Can you do this experiment? In this worksheet, your child will read the instructions, put them in order by creating a flow chart, organize the elements of the experiment - and then do the experiment and write a report about it. Bonus: your child will do a little research to compare the experiment results with information from reference books or the internet.

Making metaphors

How many metaphors can you find in this poem? In this language arts worksheet, your child learns to spot metaphors, determine their meaning from context, write them as similes, and decide which metaphors are most effective and why. Bonus: your child gets practice writing poetry using metaphors.

Poems: comparing

In this reading worksheet, your child learns how to look at the language, meaning, structure, and mechanics in poetry by comparing two poems by the same author.

Putting sentences in order

Can you fix this paragraph? It's all out of order! In this language arts worksheet, your child will put the sentences into logical order and then rewrite the paragraph using compound and complex sentences.

Reading comprehension: dialects

Does this text sound funny? That's because it's written in a dialect, which is a variation on the English you usually speak. This language arts worksheet helps children learn the difference between a dialect and standard English and to recognize the style of an individual writer as they read, compare, and contrast two texts.

Reading comprehension: Hard Times

Here's an excerpt from Hard Times by Charles Dickens. In this reading worksheet, your child will read a description of Coketown and answer questions about Dickens' use of language.

Rewriting a dialogue (removing quotes)

Can you rewrite this dialogue without any quotation marks? In this writing worksheet, your child gets practice editing and rewriting text so that it's in the past tense and there aren't any quotation marks.

Students really start coming into their own during the 5th grade. They are developing their personalities and identities. More importantly, they are developing their reading skills. This page ought to help with that. It has all of the worksheets that I've written at the 5th grade level. I used this great site to determine the readability scores of these worksheets, but you should read and approve each of them yourself for quality and appropriateness before giving them to your students. There are many different formulas that one can use to determine the readability score of a text, and the scores that they produce vary quite a bit. I'm using an average of five different scores for these texts. For a better selection of appropriate texts for your 5th grade students, I encourage you to allow texts written two grade levels above and below by clicking the button beneath this text.

reading worksheets 5th grade

Our cause-and-effect e-worksheets, context clues practice, and summarizing text questions work on the following Common Core Standards.

  • CCSS.RL.5.1, CCSS.RL.5.2, CCSS.RL.5.3, CCSS.RL.5.4, CCSS.RL.5.5, and RL.5.6.

This cause-and-effect 5th-grade reading comprehension e-worksheet works on students identifying the cause and effect of the relationship between the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Students will read the short comprehension passages and answer multiple-choice questions to check for understanding.

What does cause mean?

What does effect mean?

What does cause and effect mean?

Cause and Effect Keyword Flashcards

Here are some interactive keyword flashcards that can help you identify where you might find information about the cause and effect in a text. Flip the flashcard and get an example sentence using each signal word.

Sally woke up late. Therefore she missed the school bus.

Billy had such a funny personality that everyone always laughed with him.

She whispered because she didn't want the teacher to hear.

Read the following nonfiction passage a few times by clicking the right arrow and then scroll down to take the checkpoint quiz. As you're reading, think about the cause and effect of the relationship between the Sun, Earth, and Moon.

5th grade reading homework

The Earth, Sun, and Moon are the three space objects that impact our lives the most. The Earth is the planet we live on, the planet under your feet right now. Therefore, without the Earth, we wouldn't have anywhere to live. The Sun is a star that warms our planet and gives us heat and light. So, it is very powerful. Earth's Moon creates tides and makes Earth more livable.

The Moon orbits the Earth, and the Earth orbits the Sun. If the Earth was thrown off its orbit, the Sun's gravity could cause the Earth to fly straight toward the burning Sun; luckily, the Moon’s gravity pulls on the Earth and keeps us safe and in orbit.

The Earth is around 383,400 km from the Moon, and the Sun is around 147 million km from Earth. Though they are different distances, they look the same size in the sky. This is because the Sun is around 109 times bigger than the Earth.

Because they appear to be the same size, the Sun, Earth, and Moon work together to create eclipses. So, we get a solar eclipse whenever the Moon is directly between Earth and the Sun, causing all of the sun’s light to be blocked by the Moon. When the Earth moves between the Moon and Sun, the Earth's shadow darkens the surface of the Moon, so much so that we get a lunar eclipse. The Moon will often turn a dark shade of red due to the change in sunlight.

Reading Comprehension Cause and Effect Question Quiz

Read through the comprehension passages and try out the quiz. Got a question wrong? Don't worry. Just press reset, and the question will start over.

Select the appropriate cause from the following effects.

The planet is warm, and humans are able to see. What is the cause?

Choose the best answer from the choices below

The Earth orbiting the Sun.

The Sun giving off light and heat.

The Moon pulling on the earth.

The earth remains safely in orbit. What is the cause?

The Moon pulling on the Earth.

The Sun creating heat.

The seasons changing.

A lunar eclipse is in progress. What is the cause?

The Moon blocking the Sun’s light.

The Earth's shadow darkens the surface of the Moon.

The Earth being around 383,400 km from the Moon.

The Moon is directly between Earth and the Sun, causing all of the Sun’s light to be blocked. What is the effect?

A solar eclipse takes place.

A lunar eclipse takes place.

The text around unknown words can hint at their meaning, even when the word is unfamiliar. In this 5th-grade reading comprehension worksheet, students will practice identifying the meaning of new words to build their vocabularies using context clues in the text. Scroll down for the interactive reading comprehension multiple-choice quiz questions based on the texts.

What are context clues?

As you’re reading the following passages, pay attention to the words in bold and the context clues that help you understand the meaning.

Read the following passages a few times by clicking the right arrow and then scroll down to take the checkpoint quiz.

Figurative language makes stories, texts, and sentences way more interesting. When working on reading comprehension for 5th graders- students need to understand how devices like metaphors and similes give context and depth to what they read.

Scroll down for the comprehension multiple-choice questions quiz based on the text.

Flip the flashcard to discover the meaning.

What are similes?

Similes compare two things using the words "as" or "like." They are a creative way to compare. For example, "life is like a box of candy."

What are metaphors?

Metaphors can be short or extended, and instead of using "like" or "as," writers find other artistic ways to describe and compare two things. For example, " You are my sunshine" is a metaphor.

What are idioms?

An idiom is a type of metaphor or simile that people use to describe something. They are often cultural and contextual, depending on where you are. For example, " under the weather" means the person feels sick or off.

Here are some short passages. As you’re reading, think about what type of figurative language the author uses.
