Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is an Indian international cricket player. He is a middle order batsman, who can also open the batting. He can also bowl right arm medium pace. He got his initial cricket training in West Delhi Cricket Academy , since its inception in 1998.

Virat Kohli played his first Test in 2011 against West Indies in Kingston. Kohli was the recipient of the ICC ODI Player of the Year award in 2012. Kohli first played for Delhi Under-15 team in October 2002 in the 2002–03 Polly Umrigar Trophy.

Virat Kohli, the epitome of aggressive sportsmanship, was born on November 5, 1988, in Delhi into a Punjabi family. His father, Prem Kohli , worked as a criminal lawyer and his mother, Saroj Kohli , is a housewife. He has an elder brother, Vikash , and an elder sister, Bhavna .

He was known to have had an affinity towards cricket from a very early age, as early as 3, according to some. He’d take up his bat, and ask his father to bowl to him. He studied at Vishal Bharti Public School and was raised in Uttam Nagar, Delhi . When he was a youngster, he played in the alleyways with the boys from the area, and the people around saw his talent even then. Everyone urged his father to not let his talent go to waste in gulley cricket and send him to a proper cricket coaching Academy.

In ninth grade, he shifted to Savier Convent in Paschim Vihar to help his cricket practice. Apart from sports, Kohli was good at academics as well, and his teachers remember him as “ a bright and alert child “. Kohli’s family lived in Meera Bagh until 2015 when they moved to Gurgaon.

When West Delhi Cricket Academy was created in 1998, Kohli was part of its first batch and received training under Rajkumar Sharma.

Kohli made his cricket debut in October 2002 with the Delhi Under-15 team in the 2002-03 Polly Umrigar Trophy and lead the team for the next trophy. He was later selected in the Delhi Under-17 team for the 2003-04 Vijay Merchant Trophy where he finished as the highest run-scorer. 

At the age of 18, Kohli made his first-class debut for Delhi against Tamil Nadu wherein he scored 10 runs. In July 2006, he made his debut in the Under-19 team during India's tour of England. India won both ODI and Test series. Kohli made his T20 debut next year and emerged as the highest run-scorer in the Inter-State T20 Championship with 179 runs. 

The year 2008 was a life-changing year for Kohli. First, he captained the Under-19 Cricket World Cup-winning team. Second, he was bought by RCB for $30,000 on a youth contract for IPL. Third, he made his international debut. 

After recovering from a minor injury, Kohli replaced Gambhir for the tri-series in Sri Lanka and batter at no. 4 in the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy as Yuvraj Singh was recovering from an injury. 

For the tri-nation ODI tournament in Bangladesh in 2010, Tendulkar was rested, thereby enabling Kohli to play in each match. Due to his phenomenal performance in Bangladesh, he was praised by the then captain MS Dhoni. 

Kohli was part of the World Cup-winning team in 2011 and became the first Indian batsman to score a century on World Cup debut. 

Kohli made his Test debut against West Indies at Kingston and performed poorly in the series, amassing just 76 runs in five innings. In 2015, he became the first Indian batsman to score a century against Pakistan in a World Cup match.

During South Africa's tour of India, he became the fastest batsman in the world to make 1,000 runs in T20I cricket, achieving the feat in his 27th innings.

During the ODI tour of Australia, Kohli emerged as the fastest batsman in the world to cross the 7000-run mark in ODIs, and the fastest to score 25 centuries. 

During the 3 match Test series against Sri Lanka at home in 2017, he became the first batsman to score six double hundreds as a captain. That year, he scored a total of 2818 international runs, the third-highest by an Indian in a calendar year and highest ever by an Indian player. 

In August 2018, he ranked no. 1 in the ICC Test rankings. With this, he became the seventh Indian batter to achieve this milestone. He became the first Indian, first captain and tenth overall to hit three successive centuries in ODIs in October 2018. 

For the tri-series in Zimbabwe in 2010, Raina was named captain while Kohli was made vice-captain. During this, he emerged as the fastest Indian batsman to reach 1,000 ODI runs. 

He was appointed as vice-captain for the 2012 Asia Cup due to his excellent performance in Australia. 

Kohli captained the 2013 West Indies tri-series winning team after Dhoni injured himself during the match. He also captained a five-match ODI tour of Zimbabwe, which India won by 5-0, their first in any away ODI series. 

He was named vice-captain for the 2014 ICC World T20 Competition where India emerged as the runner ups and Kohli as Man of the Tournament as he amassed 319 runs in the tournament. 

He led India in the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka which India won by 5-0. It was the second whitewash under his captaincy and fourth in India's ODI history. 

He led India in the first Test of the Australian tour and scored 115 runs in the first innings, thereby becoming the fourth Indian to score a hundred on his Test captaincy debut. Dhoni announced his retirement from Test cricket at the conclusion of the third match between India and Australia, and Kohli was appointed as the full-time Test captain ahead of the fourth Test at Sydney.

At Sydney, Kohli scored 147 in the first innings and became the first batter in the Test cricket history to score three hundred in his first three innings as Test captain. He was named as captain of the 'Team of the Tournament' for the 2016 World Twenty20 by the ICC. 

He captained India in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. India entered the finals but lost to Pakistan. Kohli also captained the 2019 Cricket World Cup where India failed to reach the finals after losing the semi-final match against New Zealand. India's first whitewash under Kohli's captaincy was India's tour of New Zealand in 2020. 

India lost the 2021 ICC World Test Championship Final to New Zealand, Kohli's third defeat as captain in knockouts and finals of ICC tournaments. India failed to make it through the semi-finals in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 under Kohli's captaincy.

Virat Kohli Biography: Virat’s cricketing journey began in the summer of 1998. Virat and his brother Vikas were ferried by their father Prem Kohli to a cricket camp in west Delhi.

It was a typical hot summer day and little did Rajkumar Sharma, coach of the West Delhi Cricket Academy, know that over 250 kids would brave this extreme weather.

Amongst these 250 kids was a young Virat who didn’t take much time to turn the eyeballs of Rajkumar. But not the way you would think!

 “I remember noticing this pretty chubby, pretty naughty sort of youngster, who was not even ten, registering enthusiastically” –  reads an excerpt from the book ‘Virat- The Making of a Champion’ in which coach Rajkumar describes his fond memory of Virat.

Virat was the youngest among the lot there. This meant that he had to work very hard to stay in line with the rest. And he did. The gritty youngster grilled and worked ever so hard under the watchful eyes of coach Sharma. Perhaps, these ‘extra’ efforts were the foundation stones of the modern-day Virat Kohli.

Virat played a tournament under Rajkumar held at the Delhi Development Authority’s Sports Complex ground in Hari Nagar. The tournament consisted of six games. Three league fixtures, a quarter-final, a semi-final and a final.

Rajkumar Sharma remembers that Kohli got out only once in the tournament. He was indeed the leading run-scorer in the tournament and was flamboyant with his shots.

But more than the tournament, the most memorable moment in young Virat’s career happened during the presentation ceremony when fast-bowler Ashish Nehra presented him with the ‘Player of the Tournament’. Nehra was a superstar back then, having just come back from an excellent 2003 World Cup campaign.

That was just the start of his career. And how far has Virat come from that incident? Well, the world saw the answer on 1st November 2017 when Ashish Nehra announced his retirement from international cricket in a T20I against New Zealand- under the captaincy of  Virat Kohli. Phew! Virat Kohli Biography: Virat’s List A debut came on February 18, 2006, when he played for Delhi against Services. Though he didn’t get to bat in that inning, Delhi won the match comfortably by 233 runs. Virat went on to feature in over 273 List A matches.

Kohli’s Ranji Trophy debut came on November 23, 2006, against Tamil Nadu. The world got to see the youngster’s grit and commitment towards cricket in December when he decided to play for Delhi against Karnataka despite his father’s death the previous day. And despite the tragic incident, he went on to score a crucial 90 runs.

This incident was a turning point in Kohli’s life. “Overnight he became a much more mature person. He took every match seriously. He hated being on the bench. It’s as if his life hinged totally on cricket after that day,” his mother revealed later.

He went on to debut for the India Under-19 squad on the English tour that year. It was followed by a tour to Pakistan, where he returned home with an average of 58 in Test and 41.66 in ODIs.

The following season, he was a part of the Gautam Gambhir-led Delhi squad that won the Ranji Trophy in the 2007-08 season.

2008 U-19 World Cup

Virat Kohli Biography: Having performed well in the U-19 as well as the title-winning Delhi side, Virat was given the captain’s armband to lead the India U-19 side at the 2008 U-19 World Cup in Malaysia.

And that turned out to be an instrumental decision. Kohli would go on to lead the young squad to the title with a 12-run victory over England in the finals.

On a personal front, he scored a total of 165 runs in the group stage, including a century against West Indies.

In the semi-finals against New Zealand, with the team struggling at 40/2, he weaved a crucial partnership with Shreevats Goswami and hit a crucial knock of 43. India would go on to win the game by 3 wickets. Kohli has rightfully adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’.

While Virat Kohli got the better of Kane Williamson, the U-19 Kiwi captain, their paths would cross again a decade later at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. And this time, it was Williamson who had the last laugh…

Virat Kohli Debut

Virat Kohli Biography: As Virat Kohli played his teen life’s finest cricket in Malaysia, a group of men sitting in BCCI’s HQ in Mumbai were keenly watching his moves. This was the Indian Cricket selection committee, headed by K Srikkanth.

Srikkanth and his men were looking for a revival of the famed but ageing Indian batting lineup. With the coronation of MS Dhoni as the captain of the team in 2008, the process only accelerated. In Kohli, selectors envisioned a reliable batsman that would hold together the team’s rather fragile middle-order.

And with two main men – Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag – out injured, they wasted little time in getting him on board. Virat made his debut on August 18 2008, on the tour to Sri Lanka. He scored 12 runs then.

After a relatively dry spell of three games, Kohli seized the opportunity in the fourth game by hitting a match-winning, or perhaps series win ning knock of 54 runs. India ultimately won the series 3-2.

Despite coming in and out of the senior team, Kohli was making his mark. This was rewarded by his selection in the 4-team Emerging Players Tournament held between July and August 2009 in Australia.

In the seven games that he played, the 19-year-old scored a massive 398 runs at an average of 66.33, thus ending up as the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Kohli also proved that he was arguably the best batting prodigy in the world at that moment.

Kohli singled out the tournament as the “turning point” of his career. “That boosted my confidence tremendously. I just became so much more mentally stronger. I have now learned to bat in pressure conditions.

From that time, I have just been concentrating on my game and not thinking about other things,” he said at a press conference in 2010.

Virat Kohli Biography: An injury to Gautam Gambhir provided another lucky recall for Kohli, again for a series against Sri Lanka. In the following tournaments including the 2009 Champions Trophy and the series against Australia.

It was in the 4th ODI of the Sri Lankan series that Kohli hit his first century.  His 224-run stand with Gautam Gambhir prompted the latter to hand his ‘Man of the Match’ award to Kohli.

As he grew in performance over the next few years, Kohli started to regularly feature for India. 2010 was a path-breaking year for him. Virat finished the year with 995 runs at an average of 47.38, making him the highest run-scoring batsman.

And this was a phenomenal achievement for a 22-year-old who was still finding his place amongst established biggies. The year 2010 was really crucial in cementing Virat’s place in India’s starting XI.

Kohli has surpassed legends like Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakarra, and Jacques Kallis in the list of most centuries by a batsman. He is threateningly close to the record of 49 ODI centuries. Kohli currently has 43 ODI centuries.

Subsequently, Kohli also won ICC Test Player of the Year and ICC ODI Player of the Year awards in 2018, becoming the first player to win both awards in the same year. In 2013, Kohli reached the number-one spot in the ICC rankings for ODI batsmen for the first time.

Virat Kohli was appointed the Vice Captain of the ODI team in 2012 and handed over the Test captaincy following Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Test retirement in 2014. In early 2017, he became the limited-overs captain as well after Dhoni stepped down from the position.

In the Australia tour of India 2020, Virat Kohli beats Tendulkar’s record to become the fastest cricketer to score 12,000 ODI runs.

On December 9, 2021, the apex cricketing body removed Virat Kohli as ODI skipper and justified the move by saying they did not want to separate captains for white-ball format.

On October 19, 2023, Virat Kohli became the fastest ever to complete 26,000 runs in International cricket. Virat reached this milestone in just 577 innings while Sachin scored 26000 international runs in 601 innings.

On November 5, 2023, in the World Cup 2023 group match against South Africa Virat scored his 49th ODI century and equals Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries.

Test Career

Kohli achieved the highest-ever test rating for any Indian batsman – 937 against England on 22nd August 2018. The second Indian on the list is Sunil Gavaskar with a rating of 917.

Kohli masquerades a strong test record with 26 centuries and 22 half-centuries in 82 matches.

Virat Kohli stepped down as Test skipper on January 15, 2022, a day after India’s Test series loss in South Africa. Virat steps down with the fourth-most wins as captain in Test cricket, with 40 wins from 68 games. Of the other 28, 11 were draws, and 17 were losses.

• Kohli amassed 81 runs in three innings of the two-match test series in the Sri Lanka tour of India in 2022 and completed a hundred Test matches. He becomes the 12th Indian cricketer to play this count in test format.
• Kohli was named in India’s test squad for India’s tour of Bangladesh in 2022-23 where he scored only 45 runs in four innings of the two test matches he played.
• It was his 29th test century and became the first player to score 50+ score in the 500th international match.
• He smashed 76 runs in the first test match on July 12 where India won the match by an innings and 32 runs.
• During the second test played on July 20, 2023, he smashed 121 runs in the first innings but did not get a chance to bat in the second innings. The match finally concluded in a draw.
• He smashed 38 and 76 runs in the first test match played between December 26 and 28 where India lost the match by an innings and 42 runs.
• He scored 58 runs in the second test played between Jan 03 and 04, 2024 where India won the match by seven wickets.
• He withdrew from England’s tour of India in 2024 due to the birth of his second child in London.

Virat Kohli Biography: The first T20 match between Zimbabwe and India in India’s tour of Zimbabwe, saw Kohli make his T20 international debut. To be specific about the date, it was the 12th of June, 2010.

If you look at that day and compare it with Kohli of today, things have changed exponentially. He is the captain of the Indian national team across all formats. He averages 50 in the T20I format itself!

On 6th December 2019, Kohli again gave evidence of his supremacy in the chase game against West Indies by scoring an unbeaten 94, his highest score in T20Is, and helping India chase down a massive total of 207 runs. This was the Men in Blue’s highest run-chase in T20I.

Virat Kohli Biography Starts – He was born in a Punjabi family based in Delhi. Virat Kohli’s father, Prem Kohli, was a criminal lawyer and his mother Saroj, is a homemaker. Virat has two older siblings, a brother – Vikash, and a sister – Bhavna.

Virat Kohli had a dream. A dream like every other young kid in India to represent the country in the gentleman’s game. It is this vigor and fervor for the game of cricket that has helped this extremely talented young boy from Delhi to scale great heights at a very young age. He was barely in his teens when he led the India Under-19 team to a World Cup victory in Kuala Lumpur in 2008 which was a pointer of bigger and better things to come in the future. After that famous victory, it was not long before he made his entry into the senior team and Kohli was soon brushing shoulders with the best in the business and his cricketing idol Sachin Tendulkar. The stylish right-handed batsman banked on the opportunities at disposal and displayed a tremendous sense of maturity as if to show he belonged. He was termed brash and aggressive for being expressive on and off the field, but Kohli imbibed all of those qualities in his gameplay only to become better with each passing game. He began chasing totals for India with ridiculous ease and India had found a stable batsman in the middle order for the long run. Such is his batting prowess and cricketing mind that Ray Jennings(his coach with Royal Challengers Bangalore) touted him to be the leader of future India. Kohli made his mark in the shorter formats of the game but got a chance to don the whites in 2011. He registered his maiden Test century against Australia in Adelaide in January 2012 and followed it up with impressive centuries in India and abroad - namely South Africa and New Zealand.

India has given to the world many a great cricketer but perhaps none as ambitious as Virat Kohli. To meet his ambition, Kohli employed the technical assiduousness of Sachin Tendulkar and fitness that was in the league of top athletes in the world, not just cricketers. Barring one in Bangladesh, Kohli scored Test hundreds in and against every country he played. He absolutely smashed records for number of matches taken to reach eight, nine, ten and eleven thousand ODI runs, and became the first batter to score 50 hundreds in one-day internationals.

An Under-19 world Cup-winning captain, when he burst onto the scene, Kohli was a precocious talent with a cover drive to kill for. He was destined to be India's next big batsman as the Tendulkar era began to retire, but Kohli wanted to be more: a cricketer whom the opposition would be in awe of, a cricketer whose presence would raise the intensity of the contest. He lived every ball, competed each moment, and made sure he had the fitness and strength to do so. He was widely credited for changing the fitness culture in Indian cricket, introducing endurance tests as a criterion for selection.

Kohli was quite simply India's most powerful captain.
