Climate, energy, nitrogen, and housing crises force societies to make urgent and drastic spatial choices against an ever-increasing scarcity of land. Policymakers have been using spatial designs to address these spatial challenges, employing appealing imaginations of the future to depict changes in the physical environment. These designs are crucial in articulating ambitions for spatial outcomes, but insufficient in bringing about the required spatial transitions, as transitions presuppose institutional changes as well. However, the working of new institutions is sometimes hard to imagine.

11. fully funded phd position in cooperation between human operators and ai algorithms in the railway sector.

Future planning of rail infrastructure usage requires a dynamic approach in which human operators interact with automated planning tools to jointly optimize the planning process. This requires both novel, yet-to-be-developed algorithms (AI), and a redefinition of the role that the human operator plays in the automated planning loop. Moreover, such algorithms and human operations need to be understood in the real world, in actual contexts of work, to tie scientific theories to everyday practice.

10 Best Plagiarism Checkers Software

13. fully funded phd position in natural language processing: statistical models of disagreement between annotators.

In Natural Language Processing (NLP), human annotators are frequently needed to tell researchers what a given expression “means”, by assigning the expression a label. When human judges disagree about a label (e.g., whether an utterance is offensive or not), it is important that these disagreements be taken into account, as opposed to simply aggregating the values e.g., using reconciliation or majority voting. Such disagreements are now generally recognized to provide information rather than being noise. We also need to recognize that uncertainties may originate from different sources: in particular, they may be due to semantic ambiguity or to subjective bias.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Natural Language Processing

Vagueness is the pervasive phenomenon in which words have imprecisely defined boundaries, which are applied differently in different contexts and by different people. For example, when a patient report describes a baby’s blood pressure as “too high”, or her condition as “stable”, these terms are interpreted differently by different clinicians. This PhD project will study mathematical and computational models of uncertainty and vagueness. In recent years, the literature in this area has shifted away from 2-valued towards multi-valued models, based on modern versions of Zadeh-style fuzzy set theory, on Gardenfors-style conceptual spaces, or on probabilistic models. But these models have rarely been tested with real data.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Drug Regulatory Science

This PhD position is part of research project NANOSPRESSO-NL (funded by the Dutch Research Council NWA-ORC). This project aims to research, develop, and implement a technology for decentralized and small-scale production of high-quality and affordable nucleic acid nanomedicines to improve the quality of care for patients with (ultra)orphan diseases. These diseases affect many Europeans, despite the fact that the number of people suffering from any individual rare disease is small. The vast majority of orphan diseases are genetic, and their cause can be addressed by compensating for the defective gene.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Rational Verification and Synthesis in Multi-Agent Systems

This PhD position is part of the CAUSES project funded by NWO and ProRail, the Netherlands railway infrastructure organisation. ProRail will provide the data and simulation environments for use in the project. You will work with another PhD candidate who will focus on how causal models of multi-agent systems can be learned. Supported by developers from the innovation and development lab and the data scientists at ProRail, both PhD candidates will be involved in designing and implementing a decision support system based on the results of the project, and will regularly visit ProRail for consultation and development.

17. fully funded phd position in youth and climate change education.

Young people often have a fixed and sometimes threatening image of the future. However, the IPCC scenarios show that multiple futures are possible, based on different storylines for social, economic and political developments, and that there are also uncertainties caused by imperfect knowledge of climate processes and model imperfection. We would like to know how teachers in secondary geography education can teach their students to deal with this ambiguity and these uncertainties in an appropriate way. In countries with a knowledge-focused curriculum and test-driven culture such as the Netherlands, students are accustomed to teachers possessing the ‘right’ answers and to provide them with certainties.

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in algebraic geometry

Enumerative geometry is the field of algebraic geometry dealing with counting geometric objects satisfying constraints. So far, enumerative geometry largely concerned curve counting. This PhD position is funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant Surfaces on fourfolds on the enumerative geometry of surfaces on Calabi-Yau fourfolds and related subjects. This new field has unexpected connections with various areas of mathematics and physics, such as Hodge theory, singularity theory, representation theory, and string theory.

University College Utrecht

Ubi societas, ibi ius: l aw is a widespread social institution fulfilling essential functions in everyday life. These functions have developed over time and have adapted to ongoing changes in society. Law does not only play a crucial role in national societies, but also at the regional (Europe for instance) and the international level. Although law is commonly viewed as an instrument for achieving policy objectives (whether it is change or conservation), it is also a means of achieving justice – law can emancipate as well subordinate.

The law courses at University College Utrecht have been developed to serve Liberal Arts and Sciences students. Our law track at UCU recognizes the importance of providing a rounded legal education beyond the learning of general theories of law and the main substantive and procedural aspects of certain fields of law. Our track also aims to challenge students to critically assess the main functions of certain laws in a given society and at the international level by taking into account the political, historical and economical context in which those they are placed. The courses offered, provide solid knowledge and insight into crucial areas of Law, such as contract law, European law and (considering the composition of the University College Utrecht student population) international law. The track has been crafted in order to equip students with a strong foundation in legal reasoning and writing as well as legal research skills.

Considerations for course selection

Students who do the Law track typically register for at least three law courses at different levels, considering the prerequisites on levels two and three. For example, students must follow Introduction to Law if they seek to register for Property law and contract law (level 2) and subsequently want to register for International Commercial Arbitration. Likewise, students must have followed either Introduction to Law or Law, Society and Justice if they seek to register for International Law (level 2) and subsequently want to register for International Human Rights Law and/or European Union Law (both level 3). In the end, students who have completed the law track typically have gained knowledge and insight of the basic aspects of private and public law, and/or foundations of law, and have gained a deeper understanding in more specific areas of law. In addition, they have familiarized themselves with certain basic legal skills, such as case law analysis, legislative analysis, legal argumentation and legal writing as well as legal problem-solving (case method). These could be considered the specific end objectives of the law track, considering the learning objectives of individual courses.

Track suggestions Based on the learning objectives of the law track, a number of track suggestions can be spelled out. The suggestions are designed based on a particular field of law and with prerequisites taken into account to meet the track criteria in terms of levels. See the table below.

Double Degree Programme in Law

Double degree in law and liberal arts & sciences.

In the Netherlands, you need a Dutch law degree to qualify for the so-called toga professions – notary, judge, lawyer (civil effect). But a Dutch law program does not specifically cater to students with multiple interests, who wish to explore different talents and sample the diversity of the academic world. University College Utrecht (UCU) and the Utrecht University School of Law offer a solution in the form of a double degree program. After completion of this four-year programme, you have two fully accredited Bachelor degrees, one in LA&S and one in Dutch law. By doing both simultaneously you avoid paying the penalty for a second study program.

The four-year program encompasses 240 ECTS in course credits, of which at least 140 in law. You spend the first two years taking required and elective courses at UCU, in which you focus on law. This prepares you for a test you take before the start of the third year to assess your legal knowledge. Based on the test you are admitted to the double degree program. During the third and fourth year, you take courses at UCU and the UU School of Law. You conclude your program with a 15 ECTS Bachelor thesis. Upon completion, you are qualified to apply to all master’s programs in law (LLM) at Utrecht University, as well as many other universities, in the Netherlands and abroad. To get access to the legal professions in the Netherlands you need an LLM in Dutch law.

To take part in the double degree program you apply to UCU like any other UCU student.

Read more on the DDLL page .

Other related disciplines and courses

The practice of law is one of the oldest professions, as is the study of Law. It has close ties to other disciplines including philosophy , political science , sociology , history , and economics . Its main distinguishing characteristic as an academic discipline is its interpretative and normative character. At UCU, students are encouraged to view and analyze legal concepts and dilemmas from a multidisciplinary perspective, and thus, are constantly challenged to bring those fields that relate to law to fully understand and address current legal dilemmas. For instance, the migration crisis that Europe has been facing during the last years, cannot be dissociated with the political, historical, and economic situation of countries from which people are fleeing.

Opportunities for future study

Because of the large interest of University College Utrecht students in Law, including a substantial number that may enrol in Master's programmes in the field of Law, or even to pursue a full legal training, the quantity of courses offered has increased and has diversified in order to cater to these two groups: students taking courses purely as part of the Liberal Arts and Sciences education, and students wishing to pursue further studies in Law.  The University College Utrecht law track also allows students to opt for the  Double Degree in Law and Liberal Arts & Sciences  programme, which enables students who have signed up for this programne at the end of their first year to pursue two Bachelor degrees (Liberal Arts and Sciences Bachelor at University College Utrecht and Bachelor of Laws at the Utrecht Law School) in a four-year programme.

For an overview of Master's programmes in Law at Utrecht University, please visit the website of the School of Law . Please be aware that the majority of law Master's programmes (LLMs) across the Netherlands, and in Europe, require a minimum of 45 credits (ECs) on law course.

If you would like to anonymously give feedback to the fellow regarding one of the Law courses that you have taken at UCU, please follow the link below to fill out the feedback form.

Text description provided by the architects. The official grand opening of a special school, Letovo School , took place in Moscow last September. The assignment entailed a 20 hectare schoolcampus with educational facilities, student housing and school staff housing. The school campus offers extended outdoor sports facilities with a soccer stade, a running track, tennis courts and basketball courts. In addition there is a greenhouse, a treeyard and ample space for wandering and relaxation in the green.

While the architecture and interior of the school were designed by atelier PRO, the landscape design was developed by Buro Sant en Co landscape architecture. Russian firm Atrium Architectural Studio was responsible for the technical execution. In 2014 Atelier PRO had won the international design competition, the construction began mid-2016 and the campus was taken into use by mid-2018.

Letovo, a dream come true Letovo School is a special school for gifted and motivated children aged 12 to 17. The idea to create the school came from entrepreneur and philanthropist Vadim Moshkovich: ‘My dream was to offer talented children from all over the country access to high-quality education, regardless of their parents’ financial means. This school makes it possible for them to continue their studies at the 10 best universities in the country or at one of the top 50 universities in the world.’

Landscape-inspired design and shape Located in Novaya Moskva, southwest of Moscow ,the campus sits atop a beautiful plot of land that slopes down to a forest-lined river. Distinctive level variations were applied in and around the school to integrate the architecture into the landscape.

The shape of the large complex brings it down to a human scale for the children: the building appears to dance across the landscape due to its dynamic design. Due to the perspective effect one only ever sees part of the building's full size when walking around, which gives the impression of a refined scale. The building’s contours and flowing curves create surprising indoor and outdoor spaces as well.

The heart of the school: the central hub The central hub is the place where day-to-day life at the school unfolds. This flexible, transformable space will be used throughout the day as an informal meeting place. The dance studio on the ground floor can be transformed through a few simple adjustments into a theatre with a stage, a cosy living room or an auditorium that can accommodate 1,000 people for special events such as graduation ceremonies and large celebrations, as seen at the grand opening. This central hub connects the building’s three wings: the art wing, the south wing with science- and general-use rooms and the sports wing

Learning environment with a diversity in working spaces Letovo envisioned an innovative and modern take on existing education in Russia. In the spatial design, this perspective translates into space for theoretical education as well as special areas for group work and independent study in the tapered building wings. In the library wing there are silence spaces workshop spaces and a debating room. These are all supportive to the student’s personal development.

Letovo Schoolcampus / atelier PRO - Image 13 of 36

Sports programme In addition to the extended sports outdoor facilities, the indoor supply of sports facilities is substantial. These cover fitness rooms, martial arts rooms, a swimming pool, a small and a large sports hall. Around the sports hall there’s an indoor running track which can be used throughout the year. It is available to school staff and external users as well.

Letovo Schoolcampus / atelier PRO - Image 14 of 36

The interior, also designed by atelier PRO, is tailored to the aims of the ambitious programme. The design of the interior also focuses extensively on the various spaces where students can go to chill and meet up with friends. The extreme cold in this area makes the school’s indoor atmosphere important for relaxation.

Ambitous learning environment The Russian client has established a private, non-profit school which aims to be the most prestigious school in the country and to offer the best educational programme through a Russion and an IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum. Students’ personal development is paramount, with the school adopting a holistic approach. It is a true learning environment that provides scope for a range of disciplines, areas of interest and recreational opportunities to foster children’s development. This aim is supported by the campus facilities and functions.

Landscape-inspired design, shape and brickworks Located in Novaya Moskva, southwest of Moscow, the campus sits atop a beautiful plot of land that slopes down to a forest-lined river.

To accentuate this curved shapes and to have the building blend into the landscape brick seemed a rather obvious choice. The natural ingredients of brick such as clay, sand water, air and fire gives the school building a natural setting as if the building has been there endlessly. Brick with its solid and sturdy exposure. We choose a sandy light colored brick so in all wheather circumstances it will have a warm glance.

The heart of the school: the central hub

The central hub is the place where day-to-day life at the school unfolds. This central hub connects the building’s three wings: the art wing, the south wing with science- and general-use rooms and the sports wing.

Learning environment with a diversity in working spaces

Letovo envisioned an innovative and modern take on existing education in Russia. In the spatial design, this perspective translates into space for theoretical education as well as special areas for group work and independent study in the tapered building wings. In the library wing there are silence spaces workshop spaces and a debating room. These are all supportive to the student’s personal development.

Sports programme

In addition to the extended sports outdoor facilities, the indoor supply of sports facilities is substantial. These cover fitness rooms, martial arts rooms, a swimming pool, a small and a large sports hall. Around the sports hall there’s an indoor running track which can be used throughout the year. It is available to school staff and external users as well.

The interior, also designed by atelier PRO, is tailored to the aims of the ambitious programme. The design of the interior also focuses extensively on the various spaces where students can go to chill and meet up with friends. The extreme cold in this area makes the school’s indoor atmosphere important for relaxation.

Ambitous learning environment

The Russian client has established a private, non-profit school which aims to be the most prestigious school in the country and to offer the best educational programme through a Russion and an IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum. Students’ personal development is paramount, with the school adopting a holistic approach. It is a true learning environment that provides scope for a range of disciplines, areas of interest and recreational opportunities to foster children’s development. This aim is supported by the campus facilities and functions.
