There's more to the UAE than the contemporary glitz of its two major cities, though.

The country's interior of desert and Hajar Mountains are all about big-sky scenery and adventure activities, from 4WD trips across a landscape of rippling dunes to taking on the world's longest zipline over the jagged contours of Jebel Jais.

There's also much more history here than those modern skyscrapers would have you believe. Sharjah and Al Ain are two cities dedicated to promoting Emirati heritage.

Late October to May, while temperatures plummet over Europe and North America, is high season here as the UAE's punishing summer heat gives way to winter's beach weather.

Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a mammoth modern mosque of incredible beauty.

The highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, Jebel Jais in the emirate of Ras Al-Khaimah is a major activity center.

The newest and most spectacular museum in the United Arab Emirates, the Louvre Abu Dhabi takes visitors on a journey through human history.

Jebel Hafeet, on the edge of the oasis city of Al Ain is one of the most popular destinations for a quick and easy nature break out of Abu Dhabi city.

The cool mountain air on the summit also offers a respite from the coastal heat during summer.

This is the second highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, and far-reaching, sumptuous panoramas across the mountain's reaches and down to Al Ain greet you all the way up to the top on the winding road.

At the top of the twisting switchback mountain road, you are rewarded with being able to see across the area's vast sweep of desert stretching out in all directions.

The Burj Khalifa may give you that famous skyline view from up high, but the most iconic Dubai views are still taken from the water.

Dubai Creek slices through the city, and the best way to experience Dubai is from one of the beautiful dhows (traditional Arabic boats) that ply the creek.

Sunset cruises (which often come with entertainment and dinner) are particularly popular among visitors, as you get to watch the lights of the high-rises begin to twinkle in the dusk.

For a budget cruise, though, just hop on one of the ablas (local ferries), which ply the water between Bur Dubai and Deira.

The Hajar Mountains scythe through the northern interior of the UAE.

For nature lovers, the wadis (dry riverbeds or valleys) hidden within this region are prime territory for hiking, climbing, and bird-watching. Specialized adventure tour companies in Dubai and Ras Al-Khaimah offer wadi tours focused on these activities.

The Hajar Mountains are also great for road trips simply to take in the scenery of rolling, barren mountains.

Some of the tiny Hajar Mountain villages in the emirates of Ras Al-Khaimah and Fujairah are topped by historic watchtowers and small forts, which make good stop-offs along the way.

One of the most popular Hajar Mountain bases is the town of Hatta, which has become a major activity center in recent years, with kayaking on Hatta Lake and mountain biking in the surrounding area.

The 48-meter-long Aquarium Tunnel, with 190-degree views into the aquarium, featuring over 300 sharks and rays among the 140 species living here, is a fascinating step into the underwater world.

For many visitors to the United Arab Emirates, shopping is one of the main attractions.

There are megalithic, glitzy malls by the dozen, but for a more local approach to shopping jaunts, you can't beat the souks (bazaars) .

In Dubai, the Deira and Bur Dubai districts, facing each other across Dubai Creek, are where you head for traditional shopping, with the Bur Dubai Souk, the city's famed Gold Souk, and the Spice Souk all here.

In Sharjah, the Central Souk is one of the city's landmark buildings, while nearby Souk Al Jubail is a foodie traveler favorite destination.

Abu Dhabi has also got its souk areas. The most popular is the modern World Trade Center Souk, designed by architect Norman Foster, with its shops and stalls selling handicrafts from across the Arab world.

The Hajar Mountain village of Hatta is a prime base for travelers who want to experience a slice of the UAE's Hajar Mountain scenery.

While the coast swelters in summer, temperatures here in the mountains, although still hot, tend to be dry rather than humid, making Hatta a popular weekend getaway for Dubai locals.

The turquoise waters of the vast Hatta Dam, surrounded by jagged mountain slopes, is the main tourist attraction, and many people are here chiefly to kayak or boat on the lake.

If you're looking for more activities, Hatta is home to several hiking and mountain biking trails across the surrounding mountain wadis and slopes, many with phenomenal Hajar Mountain vistas along the way. Due to this, it's become a top destination in the UAE for adventure travel and nature-based journeys.

There's also horse riding amid the Hajar foothills and, if you want bird's-eye views of Hatta's mountain scenery, tandem-paragliding.

For the ultimate aerial views on your UAE trip, take to the skies for a tandem sky dive.

Tandem sky diving experiences are offered at two very different locations in Dubai:

Either opt for the city site , where sky divers take in vistas over the Dubai coastline with bird's-eye panoramas of the Palm Jumeirah island complex below, or head out to the desert site for views of undulating desert dunes and arid plateau as you descend.

Whichever you choose, both experiences provide one of the most thrilling sightseeing opportunities in the country.

Sky diving is available throughout the year at the city site, and the desert site closes during the summer months. The old caravan route stop-off of Al Ain, with its sprawling date palm oasis, is today a favorite getaway destination from Abu Dhabi.

For families, the major attractions are Al Ain's vast zoo, acclaimed for its conservation work and home to a safari-style experience, and the Wadi Adventure water park , with its white water rafting facility, as well as a bundle of more typical water park rides.

Once home to the ruling Al Nayyan family, Al Ain is also one of the UAE's most important historic destinations, with the Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain Palace Museum, and Qasr Al Muwaiji, all well-preserved remnants from the era before the oil boom.

To peek into the deeper past, the 5,000-year-old Umm Al Nar tombs at Al Ain's Hili Archaeological Park are one of the country's UNESCO World Heritage sites .

Sharjah's Museum of Islamic Civilization is the only museum in the country to focus on the breadth of Islamic history.

The collection inside traces Islam's course from the very early years to the spread of the Islamic empires through Asia and Africa, and explores the vast diversity of culture and art throughout the Islamic world.

As well as a wealth of artifacts and art objects, certain displays focus on separate facets of the Islamic faith and specific eras in Islam's history. Some displays feature rare manuscripts and religious documents, and tourists will find them easy to understand thanks to excellent information boards throughout.

Jebel Hafeet

Abu Dhabi’s highest mountain, Jebel Hafeet, towers 1,249m above sea level, and you can drive all the way to the top along the winding roads for spectacular views over the area. Jubail Mangrove Park

After opening in January 2020, Jubail Mangrove Park quickly became one of the top attractions in Abu Dhabi thanks to its gorgeous greenery. Ferrari World

The massive red exterior is nearly as iconic as the namesake car brand and it’s one the sights people think of when Abu Dhabi comes to mind. Louvre Abu Dhabi

Louvre Abu Dhabi has become one of the most popular tourism destinations in the region and we’re sure you’ve already added it to your list of things to do with visitors when they come to town. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

This is the jewel in Abu Dhabi’s crown and is easily one of the most stunning buildings in the world. The Founder’s Memorial

There are many great places to watch the sun set in Abu Dhabi but The Founder’s Memorial is truly special. As night descends on the city, The Constellation lights up. Standing 30m tall and using 1,327 geometric shapes, the installation is brilliant to watch. The site won at the CODA (Collaboration of Design + Art) awards last year in the Institutional category. Qasr Al Watan

It’s not often you’ll get to step inside a presidential palace but in Abu Dhabi you can. Qasr Al Watan opened to the public in 2019 and jaws hit the floor when it did. It’s packed with stunning sites, intricate details and scenes so picturesque you have to, well, take a picture of it. Yas Marina Circuit

There is nowhere in the UAE you can experience speed like you can on the tarmac of Yas Marina Circuit. This famed strip of asphalt is home to the most anticipated F1 meet of the year. Ajman Dhow Building Yard

The UAE’s maritime history is well documented, but Ajman’s Dhow Building Yard holds a special place. Al Zorah Nature Reserve

Wave hello to one of the best things to do in Ajman. Take a leisurely paddle around the waters of the Al Zorah Nature Reserve and come up close and personal with an abundance of birds and marine life in an eco-conscious way. Surrounded by the Hajar Mountains, the village of Masfout is popular among nature lovers looking to get out of the city. Alserkal Avenue

It is famed as Dubai’s most creative street and there is always plenty to check out, from ground-breaking cinema to live theatre, music and art. Plus, there are loads of super-trendy coffee shops to check out – we’d recommend Nightjar Coffee Roasters and Wild & The Moon. A must-see in Dubai for artsy types. Open Sat-Thu 10am-7pm. Al Marmoom Camel Racetrack

Camels are synonymous with the rolling dunes and they are usually depicted as slow, cumbersome creatures. However, these desert-dwelling beasts can reach speeds of up to 65kmh and races are every bit as entertaining as you imagine. Dubai’s famous camel racetrack, Al Marmoom, is open every winter if you want to watch camel racing – a centuries-old tradition – in Dubai. Opening dates and times vary. Al Seef is steeped in history, with a huge amount of Emirati culture. The must-see area leans heavily on the contemporary elements of life in Dubai, but also has a nostalgic twist. Atlantis The Palm

It may have an even bigger neighbour on the way, but this iconic hotel will long-hold the title of Dubai’s go-to spot. There’s everything from helicopter rides, tennis and scuba diving to dolphin encounters and stingray feeding sessions. It’s also home to The Lost Chambers Aquarium, as well as the massive Aquaventure Waterpark, which features thrilling rides that you’ll want to ride again and again. Burj Khalifa

It’s top of the charts when it comes to vertical reach and it dominates most used hashtag lists on Instagram and TikTok. So whether you’re taking in the world’s tallest building from the ground (on the bridge between Souk Al Bahar and The Dubai Mall) or from the At The Top observation deck on the 124th floor, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa is a must-see for all. Burj Al Arab Jumeirah

Dubai’s Burj Al Arab Jumeirah is one of the most iconic buildings in the Middle East, if not the world, making it a must-see attraction in the city. The sail-shaped building opened in 1999 and has been a symbol of opulence and exclusivity ever since. It houses 11 restaurants and bars. Desert safari

Dubai lies directly within the Arabian Desert and these sandy dunes on the city’s outskirts are a must-see. Local tour operator Arabian Adventures runs dozens of different excursions around Dubai and out into the desert, giving visitors a taste of both Arabian traditions and the emirate’s modern identity. Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo

Take on a shark encounter, meet the aquarium’s resident crocodile, and marvel at the piranhas, crabs, water rats and swarms of fish that inhabit the huge tank inside The Dubai Mall. Feeling extra brave? You can even don a scuba suit and get face-to-face with the ocean’s most efficient predators. Open daily 10am-midnight. Dubai Creek

Dubai Creek has served as a lifeline for the community for centuries. Abras cross the water every minute or so and will cost you just Dhs1. It’s a short trip to the other side, but it’s a must-see and a top chance to explore “old Dubai”. Embrace the emirate’s past with a sail across Dubai Creek and get ready to be taken back to everything Dubai is really about. Dubai Creek, Bur Dubai.

Dubai Frame

Got a head for heights? Want to see the city from a different perspective? The views of “old” and “new” Dubai from this 150-metre-high sky glass bridge look superb whether you’re there for the day, sunset or at night. ‘Ghost’ village

Get peace and quiet at the abandoned pearling village of Al Jazirat Al Hamra in Ras Al Khaimah. With an elevation of 1,934m, Jebel Jais is the UAE’s highest peak, and an essential visit for hiking fans. Suwaidi Pearl Farm

You’ll be collected in a pearl diver’s boat before exploring the surrounding mangroves while learning about the history and culture associated with pearls. Experiences range from two to four hours with morning, afternoon and evening tours available. Once back on land, refuel with an authentic Emirati meal and explore the village. Fossil Rock

Hiking enthusiasts absolutely must check out Fossil Rock, which gained its name, as you might expect, for the fossils, dating back 70 million years, embedded in the formations here. Kalba Bird of Prey Centre

Falconry is synonymous with the UAE and the Kalba Bird of Prey Centre strives to keep its legacy soaring. Khor Fakkan Waterfalls

The UAE is filled with surprises, and one of our favourites is the Khor Fakkan Waterfalls. Built next to the Khor Fakkan Amphitheatre, the 45m tall attraction has been carved into the natural rock, with viewing windows at the top. Soak up the sights before soaking in the culture at a show. This archaeological site is a real window into the past, with tombs dating back to the Iron and Bronze Age. The visitors’ centre is fab, you’ll come away knowing plenty about the history of the UAE. One of the few places in the UAE with fresh flowing water all year round, Wadi Shees is an oasis worth exploring. Several types of research have been conducted regarding the tourism industry in Dubai. However, they have not managed to indicate the roles that the tourism industry plays in Dubai. The purpose of the current study is to examine the roles of tourism in Dubai and the growth of tourism, as well as to uncover relevant information that supports the development of the tourism industry in Dubai. The current paper discusses the infrastructure, strategies, and culture, which enhance the growth of the tourism industry in Dubai. The development of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in Dubai and in the world, is indicative of the touristic aspirations of the city. The study also factors in the top tourist destinations, the top ten countries visiting Dubai, as well as the busiest airports in the world (data from travel com- panies). In the literature review, the authors discuss some of the developments brought by the tourism industry in Dubai, including cultural and infrastructure development, such as roads and airports. The paper indicates the natural features available in Dubai that makes the Dubai tourism industry flourish. The findings indicate that cultural and religious diversity , hospitality and infrastructure enhance the growth of Dubai’s tourism industry. Other notable mentions, such as the Expo 2020 Dubai and the Sheik Muhammed Vision 2020 awards are also discussed. The current study highlights the developments the tourism industry has brought to Dubai and the strategies to improve the sector. The paper can also be implemented to further the research on the tourism industry in other countries.

UAE tourism sector seeks a further $27.2bn of investment to boost GDP

The UAE tourism sector continues to record remarkable performance in international tourist arrivals and hotel bookings, aligning with the UAE Tourism Strategy 2031, which aims to attract AED100bn ($27.2bn) in tourism investments and boost the sector’s contribution to the GDP to AED450bn ($122.5bn) by 2031.

In 2023, the tourism sector contributed 11.7 per cent of the UAE’s GDP, totalling AED220bn ($59.9bn), and is expected to rise to 12 per cent or AED236bn ($64.3bn) in 2024, according to figures from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

The WTTC projects the travel and tourism contribution to the UAE GDP to reach around AED275.2bn ($75bn) by 2034, supported by the world-class infrastructure in the country, which includes airports and accommodations, but also thrilling tourist attractions.

UAE tourism boom

Dubai welcomed 10.62m tourists in the first seven months of 2024, an 8 per cent increase year-on-year (YoY), data showed.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi’s hotels saw more than 2.87m guests during the first half of 2024, generating AED3.6bn ($1bn) a 19.5 per cent growth YoY.

These accomplishments highlight the success of the country’s sustainable tourism policies and its strong infrastructure, diverse tourist destinations, and commitment to ongoing development under the National Tourism Strategy 2031.

The United Arab Emirates is emerging as one of the most desirable tourist destinations in the world. There are several reasons for the country’s popularity as a tourist destination. Due to the fast developing economy in the UAE, several major festivals have become popular all over the world.

These festivals and events have led to high level of tourism activity in short recurrent periods (Bundhun 3). Economic growth in the UAE depends on the spending activity of the foreigners. Tourism is replacing oil as a source of income for the country. Oil reserves have become depleted, and are progressively proving unreliable.

In addition, foreigners bring foreign cultural values to the UAE during the festivals and events. Economic activities and the resulting growth also have a definite effect on the environment. Games, athletics, national celebrations, shopping seasons, and holiday seasons are some of the events that attract mass tourism in the UAE (Bundhun 5).

Since events and festivals are the major causes of tourists’ attraction to the UAE, the economic impact of tourism can be associated with them. During these events and festivals, there is a huge influx of the wealthiest people from all over the world. Consequently, demand for goods and services rises and economic activity increases. This is an important source of income for the citizens of the UAE and the government.

While people are on tour in the UAE, they identify viable economic activities and invest in them (Bundhun 8). One of the major industries that have experienced significant foreign investment is the real estate market. This has happened due to the UAE’s reputation as one of the most luxurious places to live in.

Event tourism in the UAE promotes foreign trade on which the country relies for a significant portion of its total income. Politically, the UAE is gaining acceptance as a global economic player unlike other Arab countries, which seem isolated on the global scene. Most of the cities in the United Arab Emirates have grown at a very fast pace due to the establishment of buildings and infrastructure to accommodate tourist influx.

Many jobs have been created by event tourism as entrepreneurs establish businesses to provide services to the visitors (Poore 3). Moreover, the banking industry has been promoted by tourism since the visitors use banking system in the UAE to facilitate their stay in the country. This way, the banking industry in the UAE has expanded to become of international acclaim.

The transport industry in the UAE has also significantly expanded due to the need to travel around the country. Movement within the country has also necessitated the development of an intricate road and rail infrastructure in the region. The UAE’s Emirates is one of the leading airlines in the word due to the event tourism in the UAE (Bundhun 7).

The increase in tourism and foreign trade is important for economic growth and stability in the country. However, the economic situation in the UAE is increasingly becoming resonant to economic trends and patterns in the world.

This makes the UAE susceptible to the destructive effect on global economic recessions. When some western countries experience economic difficulties, event tourism and investment reduce in the UAE leading to significant decrease in revenue for the country.

Furthermore, event tourism poses a political danger to the government and the people of the UAE. As the tourism industry becomes influential in the economy of the country, it is easier for foreign powers to manipulate political processes in the UAE. This can be done through regulating the number of tourists visiting the UAE during festivals and major events.

If tourists, particularly from the European Union, ceased to travel to the UAE during events, the economy would deteriorate. Most tourists, who visit the UAE during major events and festivals, tend to go on spending sprees.

Over years, native citizens of the UAE have adopted this wasteful trend. (Sultan 11) This behavior is also fuelled by the increased income resulting from event tourism. Economic behavior of native citizens is gradually changing into a western economic behavior characterized by excessive spending, when income is high, and low spending, when it is low.

Tourists who come to the UAE bring their cultures into the country. Although there are efforts to regulate the spreading of western culture among native citizens, there are indicators that the prevailing traditional culture is dissolving.

The positive aspect of this phenomenon is that the barriers that existed among the ethnic groups in the Emirates are slowly disappearing as the native citizens of the UAE adopt some aspects of western culture. In other words, national cohesion has been improved by development of event tourism (Sultan 13).

This way, citizens are becoming ethnically indistinguishable from each other. Event tourism has also contributed to the suppression of the conflict between foreigners and the native citizens. The citizens are gradually accepting western culture that foreigners from around the world bring into the country.

This happens because most people in the world have a certain degree of western influence. When tension between foreigners and native citizens is reduced, cordial business relationships can be established between both sides. Cultural influence is also important for position of the UAE in world politics. The country is becoming recognized as an influential state (Sultan 15).

Sports are being encouraged by event tourism in the UAE because it is a country that does not traditionally have many sport enthusiasts. Tourists are fond of games, such as golf, and some of the games are part of events that attract tourists into the country (Poore 4).

In addition, there is event tourism triggered solely by game seasons, such as rugby tournaments. Horse races are also becoming increasingly popular with tourists, and the local population is being assimilated to the culture associated with these sports.

The UAE was founded as a primarily Muslim state. Most of its civil laws were formulated in Islamic perspective. However, due to economic needs of the country, the government and the local authorities allow people from the western countries to engage in practices that the Islamic laws would not allow otherwise.

Behaviors, such as drinking of alcohol and public intimacy, have always been unacceptable in places where majority are used to strict Islamic culture. Wearing western style clothes, especially by women, is a trend that is being slowly adopted by Arab natives in the UAE.

This creates a conflict between the local traditional Islamic and the western cultures introduced by tourists (Sultan 16). Most of the native citizens consider western practices adopted by fellow citizens to be symbols of western decadence.

Event tourism in the UAE has several effects on the environment. However, while some of the aspects of event tourism help protect the environment, the most significant effects are negative (Poore 2). One effect of event tourism is conservation of natural environmental features realized due to the effort by business entities to maintain a pleasant environment for tourists.

The tourism industry’s demand for infrastructure and accommodation requires entrepreneurs to build more accommodation structures and roads to facilitate tourism. Humans have invaded natural vegetation and habitats during construction of these structures. As the UAE tries to improve its capability to host more people, the environment is inevitably being damaged.

Beaches that were previously undisturbed by humans have now been turned into tourist beaches with buildings and people who pollute the water with industrial waste (Poore 5).

Concrete buildings have occupied the land, previously fertile for vegetation, thus making it unable to support any living creatures including humans as well. Dubai, one of the largest cities in the UAE, is thought to be the place of one of the most extensive damage to the environment due to event tourism.

Tourists interested in various events and festivals occupy the city during the whole year (Poore 1). These tourists make up the majority of the population in the city. Dubai is just one example of many cities in the country affected by expanding infrastructure and other structures that occupy large spaces.

Event tourism has necessitated building of numerous hotels and restaurants all over the UAE. These establishments usually produce large amounts of greenhouse gases. This is leading to environmental pollution and warming of a country that has already been overheated. Moreover, emissions containing carbon particles settle on natural vegetation shortening its life.

Encroachment of natural vegetation and disfigurement of natural land topography affect availability of water in the UAE. This is threatening the existence of event tourism itself along with the country’s economy. However, entrepreneurs who wish to attract tourists are for protection of some aspects of the environment (Sultan 22).

Since beaches and coastal resorts are important for any tourism industry, the UAE government has invested in protecting marine life and keeping the beaches clean for the sake of tourism. This is an indirect effect of event tourism on environment protection (Sultan 20).

Furthermore, the UAE has built artificial highlands with the aim of lengthening its shores and increasing coastal land for building luxurious accommodation buildings for tourists. These artificial islands are new habitats for marine life. Vegetation is also planted on the islands to create a microclimate favorable for development of diverse life forms.

The UAE is one of the few countries that are displaying the ability to adapt to the ever-changing environmental conditions and decreasing mineral resources. The depletion of natural petroleum in the country has necessitated adoption of tourism as a new way of generating revenue. Event tourism is a major player in the tourism industry in the country.

This kind of tourism has led to many benefits for the country. The UAE has become economically powerful, largely due to the economic advantages of event tourism. There are other cultural and environmental benefits gained from event tourism. However, the influx of foreigners and expansion of the country’s infrastructure have a negative aspect.

Undesirable aspects of the western culture are spreading all over the UAE since the tourists do not desist from certain cultural practices when they are in the country.

In addition, buildings and development projects aimed at increasing the capacity of the UAE to host tourists have damaged the natural landscape and vegetation. Since event tourism is necessary for the survival of the UAE’s economy, it must be encouraged while enough caution is exercised to avoid retrogressive effects of such activities in future.
