Ph.D. student earns Department of Defense scholarship

Thursday, May 02, 2024 • Brian Lopez : contact

Portrait of Nolan Gutierrez

Nolan Gutierrez, a doctoral student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington, has received a prestigious Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) scholarship from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

“This scholarship will help me pursue a more permanent career within the Department of Defense,” Gutierrez said. “I hope to work with my mentor and their team at the Army Research Lab to delve deeper into my research and propose my own projects that align with their research goals.”

Gutierrez will use the scholarship to build upon research he started last year during an internship with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, or DEVCOM, in the Army Research Lab. Specifically, he will focus on enhancing the adaptability of pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras through multitask learning.

He will see if training a PTZ control system on a variety of motion profiles—such as square, circular, and straight-line movements, both forward and backward—will improve its adaptability and performance. This approach includes deploying a PTZ-equipped robot in scenarios that mimic real-world operational conditions relevant to the Army.

Gutierrez works with UTA computer science Assistant Professor William Beksi in the Robotic Vision Lab. He is Beksi’s second student in as many years to earn a SMART scholarship, following Minh (Jerry) Tram in 2023.

“Not only does Nolan's SMART scholarship strengthen the ties between the DEVCOM Amy Research Lab and UTA, but it also shows UTA's commitment to train and provide the DoD with STEM Ph.D. graduates,” Beksi said.

SMART scholarship recipients earn full tuition, a significant annual stipend and a book and health allowance. They also complete a summer internship at a DoD facility and are assigned an experienced mentor. The full scholarship and other benefits allow participants to focus on complex research to further the DoD’s mission and create a lasting impact. The program is a one-for-one commitment: For every year of degree funding, the recipient commits to working for a year with the DoD as a civilian employee.

WSSU alumnus establishes endowed scholarship fund that honors three entities

WSSU News & Information

Donation is among largest from a single graduate

A Winston-Salem State University alumnus is giving back to his college and helping his high school in the process.

Dr. Clayton Scott of Statesville, a 1976 graduate of WSSU, has established a scholarship to help students from Statesville High School to further their education at his alma mater.

The Dr. Clayton A. Scott #Mike Murrell Endowed Scholarship Fund will provide scholarships to graduates of Statesville High School who plan to attend WSSU. The scholarships are $1,000 per student per academic year, and applicants must have a 3.0 GPA.

The awards may be renewable with satisfactory academic progress and good disciplinary standing as established by the WSSU Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

soas university phd scholarship

Scott said a school counselor at Statesville High School encouraged him to apply for a scholarship from the R.J. Reynolds Corporation when he was a senior, which led to him receiving a full four-year scholarship to WSSU.

“I’m giving back because of what was given to me. R.J. Reynolds provided me with a full four-year scholarship to attend Winston-Salem State University,” Scott said. “It is my goal to be able to reciprocate to others.”

The scholarship is named after Scott’s best friend and fraternity brother, Mike Morrell. The two met at WSSU their freshmen year and became the best of friends for life. “He was my line brother of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. We were like peanut butter and jelly. When you saw one, you always saw the other,” Scott said.

Murrell died of COVID-19 in 2020. A popular restaurateur in Atlanta, he owned and operated Murrell’s Café.

“This is my way of honoring him,” Scott said.

The scholarship was officially established in 2021 with a $100,000 investment. Since then, Scott, who is a member of the WSSU Foundation Board of Directors, has designated all his annuities to WSSU at a tune of $1.5 million, making him one of the largest alumni donors in the history of the university.

“Dr. Scott’s commitment to the students of WSSU is unparalleled. His selfless act of generosity will benefit our community in perpetuity. We are so grateful,” said Dr. LaTanya Afolayan, vice chancellor for University Advancement at WSSU.

“Dr. Scott continues to personify our motto of ‘Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve,’” said Marcus Cox, chair of the Winston-Salem State University Foundation Board of Directors. “He serves as a beacon of how our esteemed alums give back and invest in the genius we cultivate at Winston-Salem State University — well done, sir.”

After graduating from WSSU with a degree in political science and a minor in Spanish, Scott continued his education at Ohio State University, Cheyney University and Temple University. He earned his doctorate degree at Stanford University.

He spent his entire career in education, having retired from the School District of Philadelphia.  In 2018, he relocated back home to Statesville, where he volunteers at Statesville Senior High.

“The counselors there are thrilled that I'm giving back to the students and a scholarship fund. The goal is to one day offer a student a full ride,” Scott said.

Helping his high school and his college alma maters with the single scholarship is like “killing one bird with two stones,” he said figuratively.

Actually, it’s three stones – if you count honoring his best friend in the process.

Winston-Salem State University fosters the creative thinking, analytical problem-solving, and depth of character needed to transform the world. Rooted in liberal education, WSSU’s curriculum prepares students to be thought leaders who have the skills and knowledge needed to develop innovative solutions to complex problems. Founded in 1892, WSSU is a historically Black constituent institution of the University of North Carolina with a rich tradition of contributing to the social, cultural, intellectual, and economic growth of North Carolina, the region, and beyond. Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

WNY Medical Scholarships Give Two Jacobs School Grads More Reason to Celebrate

L to R: Jessica Flores, holding an envelope and gift, Allison Brashear, and Paige Guy holding an envelope and gift, all standing togehter and smiling.

Class of 2024 members Jessica Grace Flores, left, and Paige Leona Guy, right, pose with Allison Brashear, MD, MBA, UB’s vice president for health sciences and dean of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, after receiving their WNY Medical Scholarships.

By Ellen Goldbaum

Release Date: May 2, 2024

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Surviving the rigors of four years of medical school is no small feat. So when the Class of 2024 attended commencement ceremonies April 26 at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, they were more than ready to celebrate.

This year, two Jacobs School medical students have even more reason to celebrate. Jessica Grace Flores and Paige Leona Guy recently learned they are both recipients of a  Western New York Medical Scholarship  of $120,000 each.

The scholarship will cut their medical school debt roughly in half.

The WNY Medical Scholarship program is a family of scholarships that was initiated by Jacobs School alumni and local business and community leaders in order to tackle two goals: the shortage of physicians in Western New York, especially in underserved areas, and medical student debt.

Since 2012, the Western New York Medical Scholarship Fund, an independent, grassroots, community organization, has been providing scholarships to Western New York students who attend the Jacobs School and then pledge to stay and practice medicine here for five years after completing their training.

Flores is a recipient of the  Jonathan D. Daniels, MD ’98 & Family Memorial Scholarship ; Guy is a recipient of the Catholic Health System scholarship.

Beloved Mentor Influenced Decision Process

A California native, Flores became familiar with Buffalo after meeting her fiancé, whose roots are in upstate New York. She happened to be visiting downtown Buffalo when the newly constructed medical school caught her eye.

“I could see myself studying there,” she recalls, noting the large, bright windows overlooking Main Street. Once she started the interview process, she said she became even more interested.

“The people were so kind,” she says. During the interview process, when she toured the school, her tour guide happened to be the late Jonathan Daniels, MD, for whom her scholarship is named.

“He took us into a room where a student happened to be studying,” Flores says. “Dr. Daniels knew who he was and started talking to him, and I thought, ‘Ok, he cares.’ I thought, ‘They value the students and take the time to know them.’”

Coming from a family where she was the first to attend graduate school, Flores says it was impossible to fully comprehend the amount of money that medical school costs. “It’s like play money; I can’t even fathom it,” she says.

Gaining Scholarship ‘the Hugest Thing’

So for Flores, getting this scholarship is “the hugest thing.” This summer, she begins residency in pediatrics at UB and at the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital.

“This scholarship is an opportunity for me to focus on what I want to do,” she says. “I don’t have to specialize. It’s liberating.”

Guy, a native of Lockport, always knew she wanted to go into health care. “But I thought being a doctor was way out of reach,” she says.

She started out at SUNY Niagara (formerly Niagara County Community College) and quickly fell in love with medicine. She enrolled at UB, majoring in biomedical sciences. The idea of trying to become a physician began to seem possible.

After graduating, she spent a year doing research in a UB lab. She met the man who would become her husband. Coincidentally, he was already a Jacobs School student. A native of New York City, he assumed he would return to his hometown for residency, but once Guy was accepted to the Jacobs School, he reconsidered.

Now, both of them will be practicing medicine in Buffalo. “I never really wanted to go anywhere else,” says Guy, who will be starting her internal medicine residency at UB.

And staying local has had multiple advantages, especially when they decided to start a family while Guy was in medical school. They are the proud parents of a toddler and a 5-month-old, both of whom attended commencement when their mother graduated.

‘Live Here. Train Here. Remain Here.’

Both Flores and Guy demonstrate exactly what the Western New York Medical Scholarship is seeking to promote. “Our motto is simple: Live here. Train here. Remain here,” says John Bodkin, MD, a Jacobs School alumnus who has led the charge to get more Jacobs School graduates to stay and practice here.

Bodkin, who was president of Highgate Medical and a family physician with the practice for 40 years, and other alumni and business leaders have raised over $4 million from private donors, health systems, corporations and foundations.

The fund has provided scholarships to more than 44 Jacobs School medical students, many of whom will practice primary care in underserved areas, where the shortages are most severe.

“Our focus is debt reduction, so that students can afford to practice in underserved areas,” says Bodkin.

The scholarships are responding to a key factor driving physician shortages: Surveys of medical students indicate that the debt students take on to go to medical school drives the subsequent area of specialty. In addition, an aging population of doctors and higher salaries in bigger cities can also create shortages in places like Buffalo. Over the past 10 years, statewide estimates have put Western New York among the regions in the state with some of the lowest numbers of physicians per 100,000 people.

Tech celebrates HOPE scholarship extension for graduate studies, waives grad school application fees for May

Students study on Tech's Centennial Plaza.

Recent changes from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission are putting postgraduate studies closer in reach for Tennessee Tech University students, and the university is celebrating with a free graduate school application month from May 1 – 31, 2024. Effective last fall, qualifying Tennessee students may now use the fifth year of their HOPE lottery scholarship for graduate school, equipping Golden Eagles with a valuable financial tool to use toward their pursuit of a master's degree.  Julie Baker, interim associate provost and dean of the College of Graduate Studies at Tech, says the extended scholarship opportunity is a game changer for students. “For students who qualify, it provides them with an opportunity to essentially get up to half of their tuition and fees paid for in their first year of graduate school,” said Baker. “It could mean that, for students who didn’t see graduate school as an option, now it’s an option for them.” Baker adds that Tech’s College of Graduate Studies offers specific tools to help students maximize the impact of the five-year scholarship. For example, the university’s Master’s of Professional Studies (MPS) track allows students to take seven-week courses, potentially doubling the coursework they can complete in a single semester. Likewise, Tech’s Fast Track program, available in more than a dozen academic departments, allows students to begin earning graduate-level credit hours during their undergraduate studies. “Our Fast Track is something that is a great option for students to have. It’s a way to get ahead and get extra hours during their undergraduate program,” said Baker. “If students have Fast Tracked in and have a handful of graduate courses already under their belt then, after that fifth year, they could be finished or almost finished with their master’s program.” For students to retain HOPE scholarship eligibility, they must begin their graduate coursework immediately following the completion of their undergraduate degree. Additionally, to maintain the full scholarship amount, students must be enrolled in at least nine credit hours. Partial HOPE scholarships are available to students enrolled in fewer hours. As students consider what the extended HOPE scholarship means for them, Tech is making the decision to enroll in the College of Graduate Studies easier by waiving application fees throughout May. “That’s something we’re really excited about,” added Baker. “Domestic students will not pay a graduate application fee when they complete their application for graduate school.” Baker encourages prospective graduate students to connect with their advisor, the Office of Financial Aid and/or the College of Graduate Studies to discuss their options, including using the HOPE scholarship for a fifth year. The College of Graduate Studies’ application deadline for fall 2024 is July 1. Learn more and apply online at tntech.edu/graduatestudies/how-apply.php .
