But how do they measure this?

In this article, I’m going to share a list of problem-solving examples and sample interview answers to questions like, “Give an example of a time you used logic to solve a problem?” and “Describe a time when you had to solve a problem without managerial input. How did you handle it, and what was the result?”

STAR stands for:

It’s a simple way of walking the listener or reader through the story in a way that will make sense to them. 

Start by briefly describing the general situation and the task at hand. After this, describe the course of action you chose and why. Ideally, show that you evaluated all the information you could given the time you had, and made a decision based on logic and fact. Finally, describe the positive result you achieved.

When it comes to questions about your complex problem-solving experiences, for example, the interviewer likely wants to know about your leadership acumen, collaboration abilities, and communication skills, not the problem itself.

Therefore, your answer should be focused on highlighting how you excelled in each of these areas, not diving into the weeds of the problem itself, which is a common mistake less-experienced interviewees often make.

Tailoring Your Answer Based on the Skills Mentioned in the Job Description

As a recruiter, one of the top tips I can give you when responding to the prompt “Tell us about a problem you solved,” is to tailor your answer to the specific skills and qualifications outlined in the job description. 

Once you’ve pinpointed the skills and key competencies the employer is seeking, craft your response to highlight experiences where you successfully utilized or developed those particular abilities. 

For instance, if the job requires strong leadership skills, focus on a problem-solving scenario where you took charge and effectively guided a team toward resolution. 

By aligning your answer with the desired skills outlined in the job description, you demonstrate your suitability for the role and show the employer that you understand their needs.

Tips to Improve Your Problem-Solving Skills

Throughout your career, being able to showcase and effectively communicate your problem-solving skills gives you more leverage in achieving better jobs and earning more money .

So to improve your problem-solving skills, I recommend always analyzing a problem and situation before acting.

 When discussing problem-solving with employers, you never want to sound like you rush or make impulsive decisions. They want to see fact-based or data-based decisions when you solve problems.

Don’t just say you’re good at solving problems. Show it with specifics. How much did you boost efficiency? Did you save the company money? Adding numbers can really make your achievements stand out.

To get better at solving problems, analyze the outcomes of past solutions you came up with. You can recognize what works and what doesn’t.

Think about how you can improve researching and analyzing a situation, how you can get better at communicating, and deciding on the right people in the organization to talk to and “pull in” to help you if needed, etc.

Finally, practice staying calm even in stressful situations. Take a few minutes to walk outside if needed. Step away from your phone and computer to clear your head. A work problem is rarely so urgent that you cannot take five minutes to think (with the possible exception of safety problems), and you’ll get better outcomes if you solve problems by acting logically instead of rushing to react in a panic.

You can use all of the ideas above to describe your problem-solving skills when asked interview questions about the topic. If you say that you do the things above, employers will be impressed when they assess your problem-solving ability.

We’ve all encountered problems on the job. After all, that’s what a lot of work is about. Solving meaningful problems to help improve something. 

Developing a problem statement that provides a brief description of an issue you want to solve is an important early step in problem-solving .

It sounds deceptively simple. But creating an effective problem statement isn’t that easy, even for a genius like Albert Einstein. Given one hour to work on a problem, he’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and five minutes finding solutions. (Or so the story goes.)

Einstein was probably exaggerating to make a point. But considering his success in solving complex problems, we think he was on to something. 

As humans, we’re wired to jump past the problem and go directly to the solution stage. In emergencies, this behavior can be lifesaving, as in leaping out of the way of a speeding car. But when dealing with longer-range issues in the workplace, this can lead to bad decisions or half-baked solutions. 

That’s where problem statements come in handy. They help to meaningfully outline objectives to reach effective solutions. Knowing how to develop a great problem statement is also a valuable tool for honing your management skills .

But what exactly is a problem statement, when should you use one, and how do you go about writing one? In this article, we'll answer those questions and give you some tips for writing effective problem statements. Then you'll be ready to take on more challenges large and small.

What is a problem statement?

First, let’s start by defining a problem statement. 

A problem statement is a short, clear explanation of an issue or challenge that sums up what you want to change. It helps you, team members, and other stakeholders to focus on the problem, why it’s important, and who it impacts. 

A good problem statement should create awareness and stimulate creative thinking . It should not identify a solution or create a bias toward a specific strategy.

Taking time to work on a problem statement is a great way to short-circuit the tendency to rush to solutions. It helps to make sure you’re focusing on the right problem and have a well-informed understanding of the root causes. The process can also help you take a more proactive than reactive approach to problem-solving . This can help position you and your team to avoid getting stuck in constant fire-fighting mode. That way, you can take advantage of more growth opportunities.  

When to use a problem statement

The best time to create a problem statement is before you start thinking of solutions. If you catch yourself or your team rushing to the solution stage when you’re first discussing a problem, hit the brakes. Go back and work on the statement of the problem to make sure everyone understands and agrees on what the real problem is. 

Here are some common situations where writing problem statements might come in handy: 

  • Writing an executive summary for a project proposal or research project
  • Collaborating   on a cross-functional project with several team members
  • Defining the customer issue that a proposed product or service aims to solve
  • Using design thinking to improve user experience
  • Tackling a problem that previous actions failed to solve 

How to identify a problem statement

Like the unseen body of an iceberg, the root cause of a specific problem isn’t always obvious. So when developing a problem statement, how do you go about identifying the true, underlying problem?

These two steps will help you uncover the root cause of a problem :

  • Collect information from the research and previous experience with the problem
  • Talk to multiple stakeholders who are impacted by the problem

People often perceive problems differently. Interviewing stakeholders will help you understand the problem from diverse points of view. It can also help you develop some case studies to illustrate the problem. 

Combining these insights with research data will help you identify root causes more accurately. In turn, this methodology will help you craft a problem statement that will lead to more viable solutions. 

What are problem statements used for?

You can use problem statements for a variety of purposes. For an organization, it might be solving customer and employee issues. For the government, it could be improving public health. For individuals, it can mean enhancing their own personal well-being . Generally, problem statements can be used to:

  • Identify opportunities for improvement
  • Focus on the right problems or issues to launch more successful initiatives – a common challenge in leadership
  • Help you communicate a problem to others who need to be involved in finding a solution
  • Serve as the basis for developing an action plan or goals that need to be accomplished to help solve the problem
  • Stimulate thinking outside the box  and other types of creative brainstorming techniques

3 examples of problem statements

When you want to be sure you understand a concept or tool, it helps to see an example. There can also be some differences in opinion about what a problem statement should look like. For instance, some frameworks include a proposed solution as part of the problem statement. But if the goal is to stimulate fresh ideas, it’s better not to suggest a solution within the problem statement. 

In our experience, an effective problem statement is brief, preferably one sentence. It’s also specific and descriptive without being prescriptive. 

Here are three problem statement examples. While these examples represent three types of problems or goals, keep in mind that there can be many other types of problem statements.        

Example Problem Statement 1: The Status Quo Problem Statement

Example: 

The average customer service on-hold time for Example company exceeds five minutes during both its busy and slow seasons.

This can be used to describe a current pain point within an organization that may need to be addressed. Note that the statement specifies that the issue occurs during the company’s slow time as well as the busy season. This is helpful in performing the root cause analysis and determining how this problem can be solved. 

The average customer service on-hold time for Example company exceeds five minutes during both its busy and slow seasons. The company is currently understaffed and customer service representatives are overwhelmed.

Background:

Example company is facing a significant challenge in managing their customer service on-hold times. In the past, the company had been known for its efficient and timely customer service, but due to a combination of factors, including understaffing and increased customer demand, the on-hold times have exceeded five minutes consistently. This has resulted in frustration and dissatisfaction among customers, negatively impacting the company's reputation and customer loyalty.

Reducing the on-hold times for customer service callers is crucial for Example company. Prolonged waiting times have a detrimental effect on customer satisfaction and loyalty, leading to potential customer churn and loss of revenue. Additionally, the company's declining reputation in terms of customer service can have a lasting impact on its competitive position in the market. Addressing this problem is of utmost importance to improve customer experience and maintain a positive brand image.

Objectives:

The primary objective of this project is to reduce the on-hold times for customer service callers at Example company. The specific objectives include:

  • Analyzing the current customer service workflow and identifying bottlenecks contributing to increased on-hold times.

This approach can be used to describe where an organization wants to be in the future. This type of problem statement is useful for launching initiatives to help an organization achieve its desired state. 

Like creating SMART goals , you want to be as specific as possible. Note that the statement specifies “net revenue” instead of “gross revenue." This will help keep options open for potential actions. It also makes it clear that merely increasing sales is not an acceptable solution if higher marketing costs offset the net gains. 

Leaders at Example company aim to increase net revenue for its premium product line of widgets by 5% for the next fiscal year. However, the company currently lacks the necessary teams to tackle this objective effectively. To achieve this growth target, the company needs to expand its marketing and PR teams, as well as its product development teams, to prepare for scaling. 

Example company faces the challenge of generating a 5% increase in net revenue for its premium product line of widgets in the upcoming fiscal year. Currently, the company lacks the required workforce to drive this growth. Without adequate staff in the marketing, PR, and product development departments, the company's ability to effectively promote, position, and innovate its premium product line will be hindered. To achieve this kind of growth, it is essential that Example company expands teams, enhances capabilities, and strategically taps into the existing pool of loyal customers.

Increasing net revenue for the premium product line is crucial for Example company's overall business success. Failure to achieve the targeted growth rate can lead to missed revenue opportunities and stagnation in the market. By expanding the marketing and PR teams, Example company can strengthen its brand presence, effectively communicate the value proposition of its premium product line, and attract new customers.

Additionally, expanding the product development teams will enable the company to introduce new features and innovations, further enticing existing and potential customers. Therefore, addressing the workforce shortage and investing in the necessary resources are vital for achieving the revenue growth objective.

The primary objective of this project is to increase net revenue for Example company's premium product line of widgets by 5% in the next fiscal year. The specific objectives include:

  • Assessing the current workforce and identifying the gaps in the marketing, PR, and product development teams.

  • Developing a comprehensive marketing and PR strategy to effectively communicate the value proposition of the premium product line and attract new customers.
  • Leveraging the existing base of loyal customers to increase repeat purchases, referrals, and brand advocacy.
  • Allocating sufficient resources, both time and manpower, to support the expansion and scaling efforts required to achieve the ambitious revenue growth target.

In the last three quarterly employee engagement surveys , less than 30% of employees at Eample company stated that they feel valued by the company. This represents a 20% decline compared to the same period in the year prior. 

This strategy can be used to describe how a specific stakeholder group views the organization. It can be useful for exploring issues and potential solutions that impact specific groups of people. 

Note the statement makes it clear that the issue has been present in multiple surveys and it's significantly worse than the previous year. When researching root causes, the HR team will want to zero in on factors that changed since the previous year.

In the last three quarterly employee engagement surveys, less than 30% of employees at the Example company stated that they feel valued by the company. This indicates a significant decline of 20% compared to the same period in the previous year.

The company aspires to reduce this percentage further to under 10%. However, achieving this goal would require filling specialized roles and implementing substantial cultural changes within the organization.

In developing a problem statement, it helps to think like a journalist by focusing on the five Ws: who, what, when, where, and why or how. Keep in mind that every statement may not explicitly include each component. But asking these questions is a good way to make sure you’re covering the key elements:

  • Who: Who are the stakeholders that are affected by the problem?
  • What: What is the current state, desired state, or unmet need? 
  • When: When is the issue occurring or what is the timeframe involved?
  • Where: Where is the problem occurring? For example, is it in a specific department, location, or region?
  • Why: Why is this important or worth solving? How is the problem impacting your customers, employees, other stakeholders, or the organization? What is the magnitude of the problem? How large is the gap between the current and desired state? 

How do you write a problem statement?

There are many frameworks designed to help people write a problem statement. One example is outlined in the book, The Conclusion Trap: Four Steps to Better Decisions, ” by Daniel Markovitz. A faculty member at the Lean Enterprise Institute, the author uses many case studies from his work as a business consultant.

To simplify the process, we’ve broken it down into three steps:

1. Gather data and observe

Use data from research and reports, as well as facts from direct observation to answer the five Ws: who, what, when, where, and why. 

Whenever possible, get out in the field and talk directly with stakeholders impacted by the problem. Get a firsthand look at the work environment and equipment. This may mean spending time on the production floor asking employees questions about their work and challenges. Or taking customer service calls to learn more about customer pain points and problems your employees may be grappling with.    

2. Frame the problem properly  

A well-framed problem will help you avoid cognitive bias and open avenues for discussion. It will also encourage the exploration of more options.

When it comes to problem-solving, stay curious. Lean on your growth mindset to keep asking why — and check in on the progress. 

Asking why until you’re satisfied that you’ve uncovered the root cause of the problem will help you avoid ineffective band-aid solutions.

What to avoid when writing a problem statement

When crafting a problem statement, it's essential to communicate the issue clearly and effectively. A well-formulated problem statement sets the stage for understanding and addressing the challenge at hand. However, there are common pitfalls that can undermine its clarity and purpose. Here's what you should avoid:

  • Vagueness : Be specific about the problem and its context.
  • Complexity : Keep the language simple and direct.
  • Overgeneralization : Avoid broad statements that don’t address specific issues.
  • Assumptions : Don’t presume solutions or causes without evidence.
  • Jargon : Use clear, accessible language that can be understood by all stakeholders.

Refining your problem statements

When solving any sort of problem, there’s likely a slew of questions that might arise for you. In order to holistically understand the root cause of the problem at hand, your workforce needs to stay curious. 

An effective problem statement creates the space you and your team need to explore, gain insight, and get buy-in before taking action.

If you have embarked on a proposed solution, it’s also important to understand that solutions are malleable. There may be no single best solution. Solutions can change and adapt as external factors change, too. It’s more important than ever that organizations stay agile . This means that interactive check-ins are critical to solving tough problems. By keeping a good pulse on your course of action, you’ll be better equipped to pivot when the time comes to change.

Problem-solving is a mental process that involves discovering, analyzing, and solving problems. The ultimate goal of problem-solving is to overcome obstacles and find a solution that best resolves the issue.

The best strategy for solving a problem depends largely on the unique situation. In some cases, people are better off learning everything they can about the issue and then using factual knowledge to come up with a solution. In other instances, creativity and insight are the best options.

It is not necessary to follow problem-solving steps sequentially, It is common to skip steps or even go back through steps multiple times until the desired solution is reached.

In order to correctly solve a problem, it is often important to follow a series of steps. Researchers sometimes refer to this as the problem-solving cycle. While this cycle is portrayed sequentially, people rarely follow a rigid series of steps to find a solution.

The following steps include developing strategies and organizing knowledge.

1. Identifying the Problem

While it may seem like an obvious step, identifying the problem is not always as simple as it sounds. In some cases, people might mistakenly identify the wrong source of a problem, which will make attempts to solve it inefficient or even useless.

Some strategies that you might use to figure out the source of a problem include :

  • Asking questions about the problem
  • Breaking the problem down into smaller pieces
  • Looking at the problem from different perspectives
  • Conducting research to figure out what relationships exist between different variables

2. Defining the Problem

After the problem has been identified, it is important to fully define the problem so that it can be solved. You can define a problem by operationally defining each aspect of the problem and setting goals for what aspects of the problem you will address

At this point, you should focus on figuring out which aspects of the problems are facts and which are opinions. State the problem clearly and identify the scope of the solution.

3. Forming a Strategy

After the problem has been identified, it is time to start brainstorming potential solutions. This step usually involves generating as many ideas as possible without judging their quality. Once several possibilities have been generated, they can be evaluated and narrowed down.

The next step is to develop a strategy to solve the problem. The approach used will vary depending upon the situation and the individual's unique preferences. Common problem-solving strategies include heuristics and algorithms.

  • Heuristics are mental shortcuts that are often based on solutions that have worked in the past. They can work well if the problem is similar to something you have encountered before and are often the best choice if you need a fast solution.
  • Algorithms are step-by-step strategies that are guaranteed to produce a correct result. While this approach is great for accuracy, it can also consume time and resources.

Heuristics are often best used when time is of the essence, while algorithms are a better choice when a decision needs to be as accurate as possible.

4. Organizing Information

Before coming up with a solution, you need to first organize the available information. What do you know about the problem? What do you not know? The more information that is available the better prepared you will be to come up with an accurate solution.

When approaching a problem, it is important to make sure that you have all the data you need. Making a decision without adequate information can lead to biased or inaccurate results.

5. Allocating Resources

Of course, we don't always have unlimited money, time, and other resources to solve a problem. Before you begin to solve a problem, you need to determine how high priority it is.

If it is an important problem, it is probably worth allocating more resources to solving it. If, however, it is a fairly unimportant problem, then you do not want to spend too much of your available resources on coming up with a solution.

At this stage, it is important to consider all of the factors that might affect the problem at hand. This includes looking at the available resources, deadlines that need to be met, and any possible risks involved in each solution. After careful evaluation, a decision can be made about which solution to pursue.

6. Monitoring Progress

After selecting a problem-solving strategy, it is time to put the plan into action and see if it works. This step might involve trying out different solutions to see which one is the most effective.

It is also important to monitor the situation after implementing a solution to ensure that the problem has been solved and that no new problems have arisen as a result of the proposed solution.

Effective problem-solvers tend to monitor their progress as they work towards a solution. If they are not making good progress toward reaching their goal, they will reevaluate their approach or look for new strategies .

7. Evaluating the Results

After a solution has been reached, it is important to evaluate the results to determine if it is the best possible solution to the problem. This evaluation might be immediate, such as checking the results of a math problem to ensure the answer is correct, or it can be delayed, such as evaluating the success of a therapy program after several months of treatment.

Once a problem has been solved, it is important to take some time to reflect on the process that was used and evaluate the results. This will help you to improve your problem-solving skills and become more efficient at solving future problems.

  • Practicing brainstorming and coming up with multiple potential solutions to problems
  • Being open-minded and considering all possible options before making a decision
  • Breaking down problems into smaller, more manageable pieces

  • Learning from mistakes and using them as opportunities to grow

It's important to communicate openly and honestly with your partner about what's going on. Try to see things from their perspective as well as your own. Work together to find a resolution that works for both of you. Be willing to compromise and accept that there may not be a perfect solution.

This can be difficult, but try to focus on the positive aspects of your life and remember that every situation is temporary. Don't dwell on what's going wrong—instead, think about what's going right. Find support by talking to friends or family. Seek professional help if you're having trouble coping.

Is Problem-Solving Hyphenated AP Style?

Have you had a look through the rules in the AP stylebook before? Even if you haven’t, there’s a good explanation for hyphens there. As we stated above, we use hyphens when linking close words that modify a noun or object in a sentence. They’re used to help a reader better understand what is going on through the modification of the clause.

Should I Capitalize “Solving” In The Word “Problem-Solving”?

The question of “is problem-solving hyphenated” was answered, but now we’ve got a new question. What happens to capitalization rules when we add a hyphen to a title. It depends on your own title choices, so let’s look a little further into the three potential options. The first option capitalizes only the first word and any proper nouns in a title. In this case, neither word in “problem-solving” is capitalized.

The second option capitalizes all words except for short conjunctions, short prepositions, and articles. In this case, you will always capitalize “problem” but always leave “solving” uncapitalized. The final option capitalizes every single word in a title. No matter what, you’ll capitalize both words in “problem-solving” when using this style to write your titles.

Does The Rule Also Apply To “Problem Solver” Vs “Problem-Solver”?

The same rule does apply when we use “problem solver” instead of “problem solving.” However, it’s not often that we’ll see a “problem-solver” modifying a noun or object (unless it’s a problem-solver robot or something). So, it’s most likely you’ll write “problem solver.”

Alternatives To “Problem-Solving”

Loneliness is a problem that a.i. won’t solve.

When I was reporting my ed tech series , I stumbled on one of the most disturbing things I’ve read in years about how technology might interfere with human connection: an article on the website of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz cheerfully headlined “ It’s Not a Computer, It’s a Companion! ”

It opens with this quote from someone who has apparently fully embraced the idea of having a chatbot for a significant other: “The great thing about A.I. is that it is constantly evolving. One day it will be better than a real [girlfriend]. One day, the real one will be the inferior choice.” The article goes on to breathlessly outline use cases for “A.I. companions,” suggesting that some future iteration of chatbots could stand in for mental health professionals, relationship coaches or chatty co-workers.

This week, OpenAI released an update to its ChatGPT chatbot, an indication that the inhuman future foretold by the Andreessen Horowitz story is fast approaching. According to The Washington Post, “The new model, called GPT-4o (“o” stands for “omni”), can interpret user instructions delivered via text, audio and image — and respond in all three modes as well.” GPT-4o is meant to encourage people to speak to it rather than type into it, The Post reports , as “the updated voice can mimic a wider range of human emotions, and allows the user to interrupt. It chatted with users with fewer delays, and identified an OpenAI executive’s emotion based on a video chat where he was grinning.”

There have been lots of comparisons between GPT-4o and the 2013 movie “Her,” in which a man falls in love with his A.I. assistant, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. While some observers, including the Times Opinion contributing writer Julia Angwin, who called ChatGPT’s recent update “ rather routine ,” weren’t particularly impressed, there’s been plenty of hype about the potential for humanlike chatbots to ameliorate emotional challenges, particularly loneliness and social isolation.

For example, in January, a co-founder of one A.I. company argued that the technology could improve quality of life for isolated older people, writing , “Companionship can be provided in the form of virtual assistants or chatbots, and these companions can engage in conversations, play games or provide information, helping to alleviate feelings of loneliness and boredom.”

Certainly, there are valuable and beneficial uses for A.I. chatbots — they can be life-changing for people who are visually impaired , for example. But the notion that bots will one day be an adequate substitute for human contact misunderstands what loneliness really is and doesn’t account for the necessity of human touch.

There are disagreements among academics about the precise meaning of “loneliness,” but to come at it as a social problem, it’s worth trying to sharpen our definitions. Eric Klinenberg , a sociologist at New York University and the author of several books about social connectedness, including “Going Solo” and “Palaces for the People,” described the complexity of loneliness to me this way: “I think of loneliness as our bodies’ signal to us that we need better, more satisfying connections with other people.” And, he said, “the major issue I have with loneliness metrics is they often fail to distinguish between the ordinary healthy loneliness, which gets us off our couch and into the social world when we need it, and the chronic dangerous loneliness, which prevents us from getting off our couch and spirals and leads us to spiral into depression and withdrawal.”

Why I worry about chatting with bots as a potential solution to loneliness is that it could be an approach that blunts the feeling just enough that it discourages or even prevents people from taking that step off the couch toward making connections with others. And some research indicates that a lack of human touch can exacerbate feelings of isolation. One 2023 paper by researchers at the University of Stirling expresses this more holistic view of loneliness quite eloquently, describing the emotion as “an embodied and contextualized sensory experience.”

Nick Gray, a co-author of that paper — which is about the effect of simulated versus real touch on feelings of loneliness — told me that he hasn’t seen any research yet on how realistic A.I. chatbots affect loneliness, noting that it is, obviously, a very new technology. But based on previous research in the field, including his own, he says “a realistic A.I. chatbot could give a temporary reprieve of the feelings of loneliness,” but “it’s a stretch to say it will reduce or get rid of loneliness.”

Klinenberg pointed out that we just had a natural experiment in forced isolation with the Covid-19 pandemic, and the results were quite clear: People, particularly people who lived alone, longed for human interaction. “If I told you that it’s a new pandemic that will hit this summer and we’ll all spend the next year alone or at home with our family, with everything in the public realm shut down, I don’t think the fact of A.I. would make us feel relieved,” he said, adding, “I think the prospect of a world without face-to-face interaction and human touch is terrifying.” He also noted that some of the companies that are pouring money into developing A.I. are among those that put ( unpopular ) return-to-office mandates into effect, so they certainly believe in the value of human interaction on some level.

I was struck by this passage in a story titled “Could A.I.-Powered Robot ‘Companions’ Combat Human Loneliness?” about work that researchers at Auckland, Duke and Cornell Universities are conducting with robots used as a means to try to help alleviate loneliness in older people:

“Right now, all the evidence points to having a real friend as the best solution,” said Murali Doraiswamy, M.B.B.S., F.R.C.P., professor of psychiatry and geriatrics at Duke University and member of the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences. “But until society prioritizes social connectedness and elder care, robots are a solution for the millions of isolated people who have no other solutions.”

What if even a tiny portion of the billions being spent developing A.I. chatbots could be spent on human and physical things we already know help loneliness? As Klinenberg put it, to help lonely and isolated people, we should be investing in things like collaborative housing, parks, libraries and other kinds of accessible social infrastructures that can help people of all ages build connectedness.

“The real social challenge and policy challenge and human challenge is for us to find ways to recognize these people and to attend to them, to care for them,” Klinenberg said. “But I also know that’s very hard work, and collectively we have failed to rise to that challenge.” We don’t want to spend the money or the time to support the most vulnerable among us. “In a way,” he added, “it’s our social failure that has created this opportunity for A.I. and technology to fill in the void.”

If you find ordinary dilemmas too easy to solve, then try a “trilemma.” And if you’re seeking a really tough trilemma, try what energy experts call the “energy trilemma.” How do you satisfy the world’s insatiable demand for energy—projected to double by 2050—in ways that are sustainable, secure and affordable, all at once? And how do you do it without stalling the global economy? It’s the equivalent of overhauling a car’s engine while keeping it running down the highway.

In a recent report, the International Energy Agency (IEA) asserts that solving the energy trilemma requires “diverse energy sources and supplies [and] diverse clean energy supply chains.” [1] And while climate activists are naturally focused on the rapid expansion of renewables, the IEA predicts that the achievable path to Net Zero involves a mix of diverse energy sources—including oil and gas—that will shift over a course of decades.

This diverse approach comes naturally to Enbridge. With its roots in oil pipelines, it’s now the largest energy infrastructure company in North America. It’s also one of the largest renewable energy companies in Canada, having invested more than $7 billion in wind, solar and more since 2002. [2]

Enbridge takes advantage of North America’s huge oil and gas reserves to provide affordable and secure energy to millions of people. But it also takes the third part of that trilemma—sustainability—seriously. Not only has it pledged to be Net Zero by 2050, it’s also one of the few major energy firms to have declared an interim goal—reducing its emissions intensity 35 percent by 2030. Since 2021, executive and staff compensation has been tied to progress in reaching those goals. [3]

The company is in fact already most of the way to reaching that first goal, due in part to its renewables investments. [4] It has invested in 23 wind farms, 14 solar energy operations and a geothermal project—enough to collectively meet the needs of more than 1.1 million homes. [5] Meanwhile, it’s also reducing the carbon intensity of its oil and gas businesses.

“The vision of the company is to provide energy in a safe and more planet-friendly way everywhere people need it,” says Enbridge chief executive Greg Ebel. “We do that by being attractive to all the people and regions who are in different stages of this transition path.”

Two fuels are better than one

Our energy systems increasingly rely on multiple fuels. Hybrid cars run on both gasoline and electricity. In homes and other buildings, hybrid heating systems are growing in popularity. These systems switch between an electric heat pump and a natural gas furnace depending on ambient temperatures and electricity rates. [6]

A hybrid approach is also key to renewable electricity generation. Solar and wind plants only provide electricity when the sun shines and when the wind blows. Backup electric generation is required for reliability, with the task typically falling to natural gas peaking plants.

In a variety of contexts, then, using complementary fuels results in a more reliable, affordable and sustainable solution. “There’s no silver bullet in the energy transition, and the overall energy mix will change over time when it comes to generating electricity,” says Caitlin Tessin, vice president of strategy and market innovation for Enbridge’s Gas Transmission and Midstream business. “You can’t just take away one form of energy, particularly without sacrificing reliability or affordability. When looking at alternatives, natural gas is 50 percent cleaner than coal, it’s reliable, it’s abundant and it’s domestic. So, we firmly believe that it will play an important role in the energy mix as the transition progresses.”

Enbridge is using other hybrid strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations. [7] For example, six of Enbridge’s facilities are partly powered by solar farms. Three more such solar farms are planned. Enbridge is also blending hydrogen fuel—a promising future source of renewable energy—into natural gas pipelines. In a pilot project, it’s blending a small percentage of hydrogen fuel into natural gas supplied to 3,600 customers in Ontario, Canada.

Enbridge is uniquely equipped to implement these complementary strategies thanks to its diverse expertise in generation, transmission and distribution of various kinds of energy. “One of the unique things about Enbridge is our ability to horizontally integrate,” Tessin says. “We have green power expertise, we have pipeline expertise, we build critical infrastructure, and we have a long record of safe operation. We can bring all this to bear to deliver energy in new ways that are reliable, affordable and sustainable.”

Natural gas looks to be a significant part of the global energy mix for decades to come. Among its other uses, there’s currently no substitute for gas in manufacturing processes requiring high heat. Yet with fugitive methane emissions still a concern, Enbridge is focused on reducing emissions from both its gas and oil infrastructure.

The International Energy Agency estimates that more than 75 percent of methane emissions from the oil and gas sector could be reduced with existing technology. [8] In its pipelines, Enbridge is using machine learning and predictive analytics to anticipate and prevent inadvertent leaks or shutdowns. It’s replacing older and less efficient gas compression stations and has a modernization program in place. And in its gas transmission and storage facilities, it’s capturing otherwise vented emissions and implementing enhanced leak detection and repair programs. [9]

One promising area of innovation is methane produced from organic waste that has been generated from sources such as landfills, food waste, farms and wastewater. Enbridge has six of these low-carbon “renewable natural gas” (RNG) projects currently operating and at least 50 more in development. It is aiming for 4 percent of the natural gas from its utility to be RNG by 2030. [10] “The great thing about RNG is that it can be dropped into our existing gas system without any changes to pipeline infrastructure or consumer appliances,” Tessin says.

Enbridge also hopes to export more liquefied natural gas to emerging nations that are still largely reliant on coal or are seeking to complement renewable energy generation. Around the world, nearly 675 million people live without electricity, [11] and about 2.3 billion people use harmful fuels like kerosene to cook their food. [12]

Former congressman Tim Ryan hails from Ohio, which is currently benefiting from an energy-hungry manufacturing renaissance, significant natural gas production and processing, and new solar and EV battery production—all at once. He sees an “all-of-the-above” approach to energy as essential to ensuring that energy remains affordable, secure and sustainable today and in the future.

“It’s the clearest, most direct path to carbon neutrality and bending the curve on carbon,” Ryan says. “We have almost a doubling of projected increase in energy in the next decade or two. We have to figure out how to meet the demand for energy without crashing our economy. And the best path forward for that is natural gas partnering with renewables.”

Can Generative AI Solve The Data Overwhelm Problem?

Data is arguably the most valuable asset for today’s businesses. This means it’s vital that people across the organization are able to work with data and extract insights – insights that (hopefully) lead to better, more informed decisions across the organization.

But all that’s easier said than done. Because, rather than being empowered by data, many people find themselves intimidated (or even paralyzed) by it.

How Bad Is The Data Overwhelm Problem?

In a world that’s full of data – where everything we do generates data – the sheer volume of data that’s available to the average business can become overwhelming. This phenomenon is described by software leaders Oracle as the “ Decision Dilemma ." You could also call it "decision paralysis" or "data anxiety." Whatever you call it, the basic gist is that more data causes anxiety and lack of action instead of better decisions.

For its Decision Dilemma report, Oracle surveyed more than 14,000 employees and business leaders across 17 countries, and the results were eye-opening:

· 83 percent agreed that access to data is essential for helping businesses make decisions, BUT…

· 86 percent said that data makes them feel less confident and

· 72 percent said that data has stopped them from being able to make a decision.

At the same time, three-quarters of business leaders say the daily volume of decisions they need to make has increased tenfold over the last three years. More decisions to make, but less confidence in making them despite masses of data at our fingertips? This is a potential crisis for business leaders.

Could generative AI help to solve this crisis? Judging by generative AI’s ability to make sense of data and extract useful information – and the fact that generative AI capabilities are already being built into analytics tools – the answer appears to be yes.

What Can Generative AI Do?

How exactly can generative AI be used to interpret data? Use cases include:

· Driving faster and better decision making through better insights: Through real-time tracking of data, decision makers can gain a better grasp of what’s happening across the business and be presented with actionable insights. And this can be achieved through natural language prompts, such as “What are our top three customer behavior trends this month?”

· Acting as a decision-making co-pilot: Thanks to generative AI’s conversational abilities, these tools can function as virtual advisors – a sounding board to help discuss and generate ideas.

· Generating summaries of data: Generative AI can sift through vast quantities of data and create executive summaries that pull out the key points, along with best-practice recommendations.

· Visualizing data: Generative AI can generate analytics reports in an easy-to-digest format – presenting insights from the data not just as text narratives but also in a visual format (graphs, charts, etc.).

· Automating data analytics: Generative AI can potentially automate the data analysis process and provide automatic notifications for, well, anything you want. Spikes in sales, trending website activity, a drop in factory machine performance, increased sick leave, you name it…

· Harnessing predictive capabilities: As well as understanding what’s going on in the business right now , generative AI can help decision makers pre-empt what might be coming down the line.

· Using synthetic data to test ideas and scenarios: By creating large amounts of synthetic data that mimic real-world data, leaders can model scenarios that may be difficult to model with real-world data (for example, because an event is a rare, but impactful occurrence, or because gathering that much data would be difficult and expensive).

· Preparing data: Generative AI can also be used to take care of data preparation tasks such as tagging, classification, segmentation, and anonymization.

· Helping to clean up data for better analysis results: Because generative AI is so good at spotting patterns, it can be used to detect anomalies and inconsistencies in your data – things that could potentially skew results.

Another advantage is that generative AI can, in theory, work with all sorts of messy, unstructured data, including photos and video data, customer feedback comments, and social media posts – meaning, it isn’t just limited to neatly structured data in databases.

Best of all, these incredible capabilities make data much more actionable for decision-makers across the organization – regardless of their data expertise . So, you don't need to be a data expert to harness data in your everyday work. Decision paralysis, begone!

Look Out For Generative AI-Powered Tools

Providers of analytics software and platforms are beginning to build generative AI functions into their tools to enable more intelligent data analytics. For example, tools such as Microsoft Power BI, Teradata VantageCloud, Tableau AI, and Qlik Cloud now incorporate generative AI capabilities. This generally allows for natural language querying of data, easy summaries, tailored reports, and more.

What we’re seeing, then, is a democratization of generative AI and data. This will help to level the playing field between large corporations and smaller enterprises because you no longer need an army of data scientists to gain a competitive advantage.

We urgently need people to become more confident and competent at working with data. I believe generative AI will help to achieve this vision and solve the data overwhelm problem – by giving anyone the ability to analyze vast amounts of data in a more intuitive way. In other words, all you need to do is ask the right questions!

Rehoming wild horses won't solve the brumby problem, but it transforms lives for horses and owners

At 14, Ruby Wild would rather demonstrate her connection with horses than explain it.

Whether she's prompting the more than 500-kilogram animal to lie down or waiting for the mare to be still enough to stand on her back, the bond between the teenager and her horses is undeniable.

"If you don't have a strong connection, it's hard to do anything," Ruby said.

But her herd of four aren't regular domestic horses, they were once wild brumbies.

"We grew up together because she was only little. She was only two when we got her," she said.

Her mum Kylie Wild said, while Ruby was supervised, her young daughter had a natural intuition with horses.

"Ruby and Gidget built this connection together and it never really crossed my mind that she was a wild brumby," Ms Wild said.

Ruby's love of brumbies is one she shares with her cousin, 17-year-old Brooke Wild.

"Brumbies, they're definitely underestimated, that's for sure," Brooke said.

"Brumbies are just so, so versatile, anything you put them to: jumps, cattle, whatever. They'll just pick it up like that and they just learn so quickly."

Where did brumbies come from?

Horses came to Australia on the First Fleet in 1788. Escaped animals become the country's first brumbies.

Over time, other domestic breeds have gone feral and now descendants of thoroughbreds, stock, quarter and heavy horses can be found in the wild.

It is estimated there are more than 400,000 brumbies in Australia and when concentrated in high numbers, their hard hooves pose a risk to the environment and native species.

Horse trainer Anna Uhrig runs a brumby rehoming camp in south-east Queensland, using horses trapped in local forests and from central Queensland.

"We can't solve the brumby problem but we're doing what we can," Ms Uhrig said.

"It's a very small part of the puzzle: the amount of horses we rehome. It's not thousands but I think the work adds quality of life to those horses."

Ecologist Dave Berman has been managing brumby populations for 40 years across the country.

For most of the past decade, he has managed the brumby herds of Tuan and Toolara state forests, which consist of pine plantations and native species north of Noosa.

"We catch them and find homes for them to reduce the risk of collisions between horses and people," Dr Berman said.

"Usually it's the horses that get killed, but eventually, you know, there will be people killed.

"Originally in about 2009 there were about four horses killed per year, we removed all the horses regularly crossing the road and then there were no collisions, so we showed that worked."

What's a brumby rehoming camp?

Ms Uhrig's 10-day intensive camp attracts participants from all over the country to choose, train and adopt a brumby.

"Yarding, drafting and then coming to these yards is totally new for the brumbies so it can be quite scary for them," Ms Uhrig said.

In less than two weeks, some of the horses go from not letting a human within 100 metres to being ridden.

"I just love seeing the transformation and I love giving people the opportunity to learn those skills," Ms Uhrig said.

"I could break in a brumby continuously and I still wouldn't be able to rehome as many as we can through the camps."

Melissa Teunis's brumby Valour will join her herd of domestic horses used for equine therapy.

"I've loved horses forever and I just wanted the opportunity to start [training] my own [horse]," she said. 

"It's the perfect place to come. Anna is amazing and just knows the process and talks and walks you through every step."

But Ms Uhrig said rehoming brumbies wouldn't work everywhere.

"In terms of the whole management debate, it's not a closed book. We don't have the answers necessarily," Ms Uhrig said.

"There's been some research done in some targeted areas and we think we have the answers and we can apply those but generally it's a nationwide issue and the management implications are different in each area."

How are the horses trapped?

Dr Berman said   the trapping process was slow and targeted brumbies who grazed near or regularly crossed roads.

"We use electric fences and we build a really large electric fence area that can be up to 4 kilometres long," he said.

"We'll build that around the horses and gradually make it smaller and then get them into a laneway and then into hessian panels, and then into panel yards."

He said patience and a respect for the animals were required.

"If you put too much pressure on, they go. They'll go through the fence anyway," he said.

Giving the horses a second chance can take weeks and sometimes months.

It's an emotional process for Dr Berman who creates a strong connection with the brumbies during the process.

"They're wonderful animals," he said.

A national problem

Brumby management differs across the country.

Dr Berman said rehoming was becoming more common, but wasn't the solution alone.

"In a lot of other parts of Australia where populations are getting too much, horses can be shot from the air or the ground," he said.

In New South Wales's largest national park, Kosciuszko, the government is culling horses in the hundreds . 

In 2022, the NSW government estimated about 18,000 horses lived in the park, with a population range between 14,501 and 23,535 horses .

Under the state government management plan, more than 15,000 brumbies could be killed or rehomed to reduce the population to 3,000 by mid-2027, to the despair of some of the locals.

Meanwhile, a Kosciuszko brumby rehoming program has been suspended  after hundreds of horse carcasses were found on a property near Wagga Wagga .

Further north in NSW, the officers from the Local Land Services have a different approach, working with landholders and rescue groups to trap and rehome wild horses near Grafton.

"It's not just about safety for people. It's the safety of the horses as a number of them have been hit on the road," senior biosecurity officer Tiffany Felton said.

"But it's not just that, they're a hard-hoofed animals so they do, and especially in these dry times, start affecting the waterways and in environmentally sensitive areas."

In the past three years more than 130 have been captured and rehomed under the state government's Biosecurity Act.

"Previously, there have been probably far harsher approaches to wild horse management, and that's not what the community wanted," said Louise Orr of North Coast Local Land Services.

Untapped potential

After just seven days at brumby camp, some of the horses are almost unrecognisable for participants, including Melissa Teunis.

"It's amazing to think that when we got here last Friday, he'd never been touched," Ms Teunis said.

"It shows you how resilient they are and just how willing — oh this will make me cry — how willing they are to try for us and, and give us all that they have."

Lilly Anderson, 14, could put a saddle on her horse Rain by day four of the course and three days later, she was able to ride the animal.

"Like, for me, that's incredible. That's like just gone so quickly. But she's also so just amazing," Lilly said.

The camp is the first stage of the horses transitioning to domestic life with more time and effort required after they leave.

"Once you give them a chance, they'll do anything for you," Lilly said. 

"She's just so smart to catch on and she'll do anything for lucerne as well. Loves a bit of food."

Past participants of the camp said the biggest challenge with rehoming a brumby was fighting off the temptation to buy another.

"It's been hard but it gets better. The highs are really high," Ava Cloherty said.
