Description of the research field and topics

The marketing group at Tilburg conducts academic research at a world class level. Our aim as a department is to excel in all three areas of marketing: Quantitative Modelling, Consumer Behavior, and Marketing Strategy. Independent evaluations, UTD rankings, and our track record in top marketing journals all testify to the high quality of our work. Our faculty members each have their specializations, and cover the wide field of marketing from retailing to online behavior, from branding to media effects, and from (social) perception to decision making.

Course program

We have a small group of PhD students (typically 1 to 3 that start each year), that are an integral part of our department. They follow excellent courses taught by our faculty, are supervised by our research faculty, and take part in lab group meetings, seminars etc. Our top students often join international selective meetings like the AMA-Sheth doctoral consortium. If interested, students can also select coursework taught by world-class scholars from other relevant areas (such as psychology for CB, management for marketing strategy, or econometrics for modelling).

SolarLab Announces 41 PhD Vacancies to Drive Solar Innovation in the Netherlands

Join the forefront of solar energy research and innovation as part of the SolarNL initiative.

phd in marketing in netherlands

The Netherlands, 9 September 2024 – SolarLab, a key component of the National Growth Fund program SolarNL, is excited to announce the opening of 41 PhD positions across the country. This recruitment drive aims to attract talented, passionate researchers eager to contribute to pioneering solar energy research and support the development of a sustainable and high-tech solar industry in the Netherlands.

Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future

SolarLab, a national collaboration of leading solar energy researchers, offers a unique opportunity for PhD candidates to immerse themselves in groundbreaking research aimed at making solar energy more efficient, sustainable, and seamlessly integrated into our daily lives. As part of this dynamic research environment, the new PhD students will join a team of over 40 researchers working across the Netherlands to tackle one of the most pressing challenges of our time: the climate crisis.

“Our research is focused on the design of new solar cells, advanced solar energy materials, and innovative integration methods,” explained Prof. dr. Monica Morales-Masis, a principal investigator at SolarLab. “The results of these projects will not only contribute to fundamental renewable energy knowledge globally but will also be directly implemented in the solar energy industry here in the Netherlands.”

Join a Thriving National Solar Energy Ecosystem

As part of the SolarNL program, SolarLab aims to foster a thriving ecosystem for solar energy innovation. PhD candidates will work on research projects in collaboration with top universities, research institutes, and leading solar technology companies. These efforts align with SolarNL’s vision to accelerate the energy transition by developing an industry for high-efficiency solar cells, flexible solar foils, and customized solar panels tailored for a variety of applications.

“By joining SolarLab, you will be part of a large, collaborative community of researchers and industry experts working towards a common goal: developing new and impactful solar technologies to meet our climate goals,” said Prof. dr. Bruno Ehler, principal investigator and program leader at SolarLab.

Funded by the National Growth Fund’s SolarNL Program

SolarLab’s research initiatives are a crucial part of the SolarNL program, which has received a substantial subsidy from the National Growth Fund and private investors. The program aims to build a robust Dutch solar energy manufacturing industry with a production volume of over 7 GWp/year, enough to meet the 2050 solar energy goals in The Netherlands . This initiative leverages the Netherlands’ extensive expertise in solar technology to produce a new generation of solar cells and panels, utilizing fully circular production processes that minimize CO2 emissions and integrate aesthetically into various environments.

A Call to Aspiring Researchers

The new PhD positions offer a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation in solar technology. As a PhD student at SolarLab, you will be part of a large community of researchers who contribute to developing the next generation of solar cells. For example, you can develop more efficient tandem solar cells based on perovskite semiconductors, make solar cells more recyclable, or develop solar cells of any color for integration into building facades or cars. Your research will not only support the creation of a new manufacturing industry for solar panels in the Netherlands and Europe but also advance global knowledge in renewable energy.

“We invite passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds to join us in solving the greatest challenge of our generation. Your contribution is vital,” added Bruno. “If you are excited about making a real impact on the future of energy, we encourage you to apply.”

PhD in Marketing - specialized in Machine Learning and Quantitative Methods

Erim , netherlands.

The marketing group at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University seeks highly motivated PhD students looking to study topics in marketing. Our group is unique in the Netherlands by focusing on developing and applying state-of-the-art methodologies from the fields of statistics, economics, and machine learning. Our faculty combines our methodological expertise with a deep understanding of the challenges businesses face. As part of a business school, we have strong ties with industry (profit and nonprofit) and government that allow our research to have direct societal impact. Strong applicants typically have backgrounds in computer science, statistics or econometrics and are looking to pursue careers as world-class academic researchers. Students define and execute their own projects in consultation with their advisers and thus need creativity, self-direction, and a passion for scientific research. We are looking for candidates that are equally interested in solid academic research and in addressing real-world problems.

Method: Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Multi-Armed Bandits, Econometrics, Optimization

Application: Marketing, Recommendation Systems, Clinical Trials

The marketing group at Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) ranks among the best in the world. Our members publish their research in top journals in marketing as well as related fields. They deeply care about open science practices (e.g., data sharing, open-source software), and host regular seminars and visits to encourage knowledge exchange with other top schools in the world. The group is diverse (in terms of research interests and cultural background), collaborative, and collegial.

Our PhD program seeks to train the next generation of marketing academics. We want our students to maximize their potential and become independent marketing scholars. We expect students to become experts in a specific domain of choice. This vacancy is explicitly targeted at candidates interested in using or developing quantitative approaches to tackle real-world challenges based on advanced machine learning and other statistical methods and/or candidates with a strong interest in marketing research applications of immersive technologies. The application is not limited to a specific topic within this domain. Instead, the PhD candidate will define a research agenda around a topic of their choosing based on their own expertise, interests and fit with one or several of our faculty members. As such, PhD positions in our group are open. During their years of study, students define and execute their own projects. They do this in consultation with their advisers, but also work with other faculty, including those at other institutes. The faculty in the quantitative group in our department work on a wide range of topics, such as design of multi-armed bandits and reinforcement learning models with applications to recommendation systems and clinical trials (Gui Liberali), virtual / augmented / mixed reality (Yvonne van Everdingen), digital platform markets (David Kusterer), privacy (Gilian Ponte), behavioral economics (Alina Ferecatu), causal inference (Jason Roos), marketing strategy (Gerrit van Bruggen), consumer eye tracking (Ana Martinovici), deep learning (Sebastian Gabel), consumer and firm networks (Xi Chen), customer analytics (Aurélie Lemmens), consumer learning (Maciej Szymanowski) and quantitative modelling approaches to predict the psychological processes involved in consumer judgments and decisions (Antonia Krefeld-Schwalb and Dan Schley).

In addition to standard required course work, students typically take courses in machine learning, (micro)economics, statistics, causal inference, econometrics, and seminars in quantitative marketing. The exact portfolio of courses is chosen in consultation with the advisers.

The PhD student will work in close collaboration with the team of advisers and other faculty on tasks that include:

  • Identifying novel research questions based on real-world phenomena.
  • Understanding the theoretical foundations and state-of-the-art models in marketing science, economics, psychology, and computer science literatures relevant to understanding the phenomena.
  • Identifying the fundamental variables, trade-offs and relationships that are most important to studying the phenomena.
  • Developing and coding the appropriate algorithms and methods that implement the novel concepts and models.
  • Gathering experimental or observational data to highlight the strength and boundaries of the proposed methods.
  • Identifying the critical assumptions needed to draw inferences from empirical results.
  • Writing computer code to analyse experimental or secondary data according the best practices and tools including versioning (e.g., GitHub), pre-registration, data sharing and open science (e.g., Figshare).
  • Presenting research findings at international conferences, in our PhD day and brownbag seminars.
  • Writing up findings for publication in international journals.
  • Attending classes and seminars (including those offered at other universities) to further develop thinking and research skills.
  • Participating in and contributing to departmental research functions (PhD Day, research seminars, weekly research meetings).
  • Teaching students (to a limited degree).

Through workshops, research seminars, applied and theoretical research with faculty, and seminars on key disciplines that provide the foundations of the marketing discipline (statistics, economics, psychology), the PhD student will gain the requisite experience for independent work.

Students have access to world-class research facilities :

  • High-performance computing is available to researchers via SURFSara (a Dutch consortium for scientific computing)
  • State-of-the-art virtual reality (VR) lab in which we conduct VR (and AR) research, integrating VR with eye-tracking and physiological measurements.
  • Erasmus Behavioral Lab
  • Excellent research funding

We seek candidates with the following qualities:

  • Intellectual curiosity, drive, eagerness to learn, and openness to criticism and other perspectives
  • Strong motivation to pursue an international career as a leading scholar
  • Strong commitment to methodological rigor and scientific integrity
  • Strong passion for real-world problems faced by different types of organizations
  • Excellent speaking and writing ability in fluent English, ideally with experience writing for a scientific audience
  • Willingness and motivation to independently formulate research projects and carry them through to completion
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Masters’ degree (preferably a Research Master´s or MPhil degree) in one of the following fields: computer science, data science, operations research, economics, econometrics, quantitative psychology, statistics, management, or marketing.
  • The ideal candidate should also have some experience in programming (e.g., R, Python, Julia, Scala, Java, or C++) and in data analysis, management, preparation, and visualization, ideally as part of at least one end-to-end data science project.

Interdisciplinary focus:

One feature that sets RSM apart from other faculties is the extent of cross-discipline work between the quantitative faculty (trained primarily in machine learning, operations research and economics) and the behavioral faculty (e.g., trained primarily in psychology and neuroscience). Thus, we are also explicitly inviting applications of students who would like to work at the intersection of quantitative marketing and consumer behavior. For example, if the PhD student was working on immersive technologies, their research could benefit from in-depth training in the psychology of consumer judgment and decision-making. In that case, we encourage candidates to explicitly mention it in their application (e.g., in the motivation letter and/or research statements).

The research group at RSM has a strong record publishing in these and other top journals in related fields, including Management, Psychology, Neuroscience, and Economics. The final results of the PhD project are published in a PhD dissertation, and most marketing PhD dissertations at RSM find their way into top journals. In addition, we strongly encourage our members to publish their codes on open-science platforms and create packages to generate more impact and adhere to the principle of Open Science.

To strengthen your international research network and complement your time at RSM, you will receive funding for a 3- to 6-month research visit. Past and on-going visits have included Stanford, MIT, Wharton, Chicago, Columbia, Harvard, Colorado, Cornell, and UCLA. We also strongly encourage collaboration with our business partners who are active in multiple domains (digital, retail, consumer goods, nonprofits, B2B, fintech, etc.).

PhD students are encouraged to pursue topics that not only improve the practice of marketing, but also consumer or societal well-being (e.g., algorithmic fairness), and thus align closely with the school’s mission to be a force for positive change in the world.

PhD research should be of the highest quality, carried out with scientific rigor and the utmost integrity. The department values openness and encourages students to embrace the principles and tools of open science (e.g., making code and data available to others and pre-registering experiments). The marketing group conducts research in our core field of marketing, as well as related disciplines outside marketing. Our diversity and interdisciplinarity make the department a lively, creative, and intellectually stimulating place to conduct research.

Emma Blackett (she/they), is a PhD candidate in Communication Studies whose work is informed by queer/feminist studies, psychoanalytic theory, film studies, and ecocriticism. Her dissertation, “Psychoanalysis for a Blue Humanities”, offers a critique of environmental subjectivity, taking as its premise the failure of public communications about ecological collapse to provoke action adequate to halting it.

Sadie Couture is a PhD candidate in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies at McGill University working at the intersection of media history, sound studies, and science and technology studies. During her tenure as a Wolfe Fellow, she will be working on my dissertation project, entitled “Long Time, First Time: A History of Call-In Radio in the United States and Canada 1945-1975” which focuses on the origins, development, and conventionalization of call-in radio and traces how technologies, policies, economies, and cultural desires impacted the format and pummeled it—imperfectly—into the shape it is today. Calling-in—using a telephone to connect to a radio station and subsequently be broadcast live—is simultaneously a technical process, a feedback system, satisfies the ‘public good’ criterion of many regulatory regimes, offers an additional way to shape an audience, and generates cheap, usable content.

Jay Ritchie, is a PhD candidate in the Department of English. His SSHRC CGS-funded doctoral research examines how poets created what Fluxus artist Dick Higgins called “intermedia” art, where two or more different artistic media are combined to create an artwork both between and beyond the artwork’s component media. Situating the turn towards intermedia in the context of the emergence of digital technology, his research examines the effects of digitality on poetic production, circulation, and reception from 1970 to 2020.

“Apart from providing vital, sustaining support for research and dissertation writing in the final year of my PhD, the Wolfe Fellowship allows me to attend conferences on digital media, the digital humanities, and science and technology more broadly,” says Jay. “The opportunity to share the research I have conducted while supported by the fellowship and to learn from other academics deepens my intellectual engagement with science and technology in the arts.”

Maryam Roosta , is a PhD candidate in the department of Anthropology at McGill University. Her doctoral dissertation is focused on the practice of temporary marriage among disadvantaged women in Iran. In Twelver Shi’a Islam, temporary marriage or mut’ah is a contract lasting anywhere from an hour to 99 years between a man and an unmarried woman. While mut’ah has traditionally been an urban phenomenon, the introduction of internet has reshaped the social arrangements between men and women who intend to contract mut’ah. Maryam’s research shows that to better understand the boundaries between mut’ah and transactional intimate relations is necessary to attend to the ways in which digital technologies such as the internet both enable and constrain women in contracting such relationships. In addition to Wolfe fellowship, her doctoral research is supported by the Fonds de Recherche du Québec - Société et Culture (FRQSC) and Wenner-Gren foundation.

Mehak Sawhney (she/her) is a PhD candidate and Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar in Communication Studies at McGill University. Her doctoral project titled Audible Waters: Sounding and Surveilling the Indian Ocean traces the production of oceanic territory through underwater sonic technologies in postcolonial India and the subcontinental Indian Ocean. Through a focus on hydrography, military security, conservation, and resource extraction, the project explores the politics of underwater monitoring technologies such as sonars as well as scientific disciplines such as underwater acoustics and bioacoustics. In so doing the project offers media theoretical reflections on the idea of the planetary, ongoing submarine colonialisms, and geopolitically situated ways to think about the relationship between sound, media and the environment.

“The Wolfe fellowship will support me in completing my dissertation as a final year PhD candidate at McGill,” says Mehak. “My dissertation titled Audible Waters: Sounding and Surveilling the Indian Ocean focuses on the production of oceanic territory through underwater sonic technologies in postcolonial India and the subcontinental Indian Ocean. It is based on ethnographic and archival research in India and the US. The fellowship will be very helpful in supporting my work and stay for the next academic session as an international student in Canada.”

Muhe Yang is a PhD candidate in the School of Information Studies at McGill University. Her doctoral research investigates how to design technologies to better support the interrelated needs of older adults living alone for physical activity. Older adults engage in physical activity for myriad purposes, including health benefits, associated sensory pleasures, and increased opportunities of socializing. Yet, older adults, especially those living alone, often encounter various barriers to maintaining their exercise routines, contributing to inactivity and falling short of recommended physical activity levels. Those barriers, including health problems, lack of motivation and social support, lack of exercise resources, not only span across individual, social, and environmental levels but also are often interrelated, as revealed in Muhe’s research findings to date.

SolarLab announces 41 PhD vacancies to drive solar innovation in the Netherlands

10 September 2024

SolarLab

Paving the way for a sustainable future

SolarLab , a national collaboration of leading solar energy researchers, offers a unique opportunity for PhD candidates to immerse themselves in groundbreaking research aimed at making solar energy more efficient, sustainable, and seamlessly integrated into our daily lives. As part of this dynamic research environment, the new PhD students will join a team of over 40 researchers working across the Netherlands to tackle one of the most pressing challenges of our time: the climate crisis.

"Our research is focused on the design of new solar cells, advanced solar energy materials, and innovative integration methods," explained Prof. dr. Monica Morales-Masis, a principal investigator at SolarLab. "The results of these projects will not only contribute to fundamental renewable energy knowledge globally but will also be directly implemented in the solar energy industry here in the Netherlands."

Join a thriving national solar energy ecosystem

As part of the SolarNL program, SolarLab aims to foster a thriving ecosystem for solar energy innovation. PhD candidates will work on research projects in collaboration with top universities, research institutes, and leading solar technology companies. These efforts align with SolarNL's vision to accelerate the energy transition by developing an industry for high-efficiency solar cells, flexible solar foils, and customized solar panels tailored for a variety of applications.

"By joining SolarLab, you will be part of a large, collaborative community of researchers and industry experts working towards a common goal: developing new and impactful solar technologies to meet our climate goals," said Prof. dr. Bruno Ehler, principal investigator and program leader at SolarLab.

Funded by the National Growth Fund's SolarNL program

SolarLab's research initiatives are a crucial part of the SolarNL program, which has received a substantial subsidy from the National Growth Fund and private investors. The program aims to build a robust Dutch solar energy manufacturing industry with a production volume of over 7 GWp/year, enough to meet the 2050 solar energy goals in The Netherlands. This initiative leverages the Netherlands' extensive expertise in solar technology to produce a new generation of solar cells and panels, utilizing fully circular production processes that minimize CO2 emissions and integrate aesthetically into various environments.

A call to aspiring researchers

The new PhD positions offer a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation in solar technology. PhD students at SolarLab will be part of a large community of researchers who contribute to developing the next generation of solar cells. For example, they can develop more efficient tandem solar cells based on perovskite semiconductors, make solar cells more recyclable, or develop solar cells of any color for integration into building facades or cars. The research will not only support the creation of a new manufacturing industry for solar panels in the Netherlands and Europe but also advance global knowledge in renewable energy.

"We invite passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds to join us in solving the greatest challenge of our generation. Your contribution is vital," added Bruno. "If you are excited about making a real impact on the future of energy, we encourage you to apply."
