Part-time enrollment refers to enrollment of less than 9 credits during a semester. Students seeking part-time enrollment must obtain approval from the Office of Graduate and Post-Doctoral Studies. Part-time enrollment tuition is calculated on the per-credit rate. Students not approved for part-time enrollment will be assessed the full-time enrollment tuition charge.
After 10 semesters of full-time study in one doctoral degree program (excluding the summer semesters), continuing students may be eligible for a reduced tuition rate. A semester of full-time study is defined as a fall or spring semester in which at least 9 hours of credit are earned. Students in the Shepherd School of Music and the School of Architecture are eligible for reduced rate tuition after six semesters of full-time study.

Term payments are due in full based on the following schedule. Students may enroll in a deferred payment plan where the first installment is due on the following schedule:

The four quadmester academic calendar is presently in use for the MBA@Rice (online MBA) degree program. |
Student accounts not paid in full (or whose payment plan is not current) by the billing due date will be subject to a 1.5% late fee. Late fees are calculated based on the amount past due. Students experiencing difficulty with paying their balance should contact the Bursa r's Office promptly to discuss payment options.
Rice University reserves the right to block or cancel the registration of any student who fails to pay, when due, any indebtedness to the institution.
Academic credits, transcripts, and diplomas may be withheld until all financial obligations are paid in full.
University withdrawals .
Students officially withdrawing from all courses are eligible for a 100% reversal of tuition and fees through the deadlines listed on the Academic Calendar by semester.
Students officially withdrawing from all courses after the 100% reversal of tuition and fee deadline are eligible for a partial reversal of tuition. Fees are not reversed. Consult the Academic Calendar for specific tuition refund prorations based on the date of withdrawal.
Students dropping individual course(s) after the 100% tuition reversal period will not be eligible for a refund and will remain liable for payment of full tuition and fee charges though certain exceptions may apply, outlined in the Registration Drop/Add section . Non-attendance does not constitute an official course drop or withdrawal. All charges due to Rice University must be paid before refunds or adjustments will be permitted.
In cases of academic or disciplinary suspension, eligibility for tuition refunds and adjustments will depend on the conditions of the suspension and will be entirely at the option of the institution. Should circumstances beyond the reasonable control of Rice University result in curtailing classes, moving classes online, closing residence facilities, or otherwise withdrawing services that are a normal function of the institution, refunds of any nature will be at the discretion of university administration.
In addition to the university's reversal schedule and in accordance with the Higher Education Amendments of 1992, if a student completely withdraws from the university and has utilized Federal Title IV funds (e.g. Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant [SEOG], Academic Competitiveness Grant, National SMART Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Direct Stafford Student Loan, Federal Direct PLUS, Federal Direct Graduate PLUS) during the semester in which they withdraw, the university will observe the federally mandated process in determining what, if any amount of money must be returned to the federal program(s).
The calculation of the return of funds may result in the student owing a balance to the university and/or the Department of Education.
Credit Balance Refunds
Student account credits resulting from excess Federal Financial Aid payments, scholarship payments, and loan payments are automatically refunded by the Bursar's Office; however, there may be certain circumstances where credits on student accounts occur that may not be automatically refunded. Reversed charges, overpayments, tuition waivers, and other varying factors may lead to a credit balance on a student account.
For those credits not automatically refunded, students may request disbursement of the credit balance through email to [email protected] .
Direct deposit funds are issued to students that are enrolled in Electronic Refunds . For students not enrolled in Electronic Refunds , refund checks are issued and mailed directly from JP Morgan Chase to the student mailing address on record.
Before enrollment for a new semester can occur, students must consent to a Student Financial Responsibility Agreement .

The research interests of the faculty in the Department of Statistics cover a wide spectrum of topics in applied and theoretical statistics from engineering, natural sciences, business, medicine, and social sciences.
Our graduate students have the opportunity for rigorous training in computational and theoretical statistics as well as applied research in any of the above disciplines. The general PhD program is flexible, allowing you the opportunity to design a program that interests you, provided that it fits with the strengths of the department.
The MA in Statistics is earned as part of working toward the PhD program, which is designed around a three-year course of study. By the end of the third year, successful students will have completed courses and started on full-time research.
Research informs the direction of inquiry in statistics at Rice and brings the latest discoveries into the classroom. Research work done by graduate students alongside our faculty contributes significantly to the body of knowledge in the field.
Rice University sits in the heart of Houston, which is home to the energy industry, as well as the world's largest medical complex, and NASA's Johnson Space Center is just down the road. With that, Rice researchers have endless opportunities for collaboration and careers.

Finance focuses on the financial structure and problems of corporations, on the manner in which financial securities are priced, and on the organization and operation of markets and financial institutions. As a scholar in finance, you might examine how conflict of interest affects corporate financial policies, how competitive the NASDAQ trading system is, how to detect price bubbles, or how investor psychology affects asset prices in a systematic way. Our finance faculty offers strong support for such explorations of market microstructure, corporate finance, asset pricing, and international finance. The finance faculty has broad interests, and students can develop analytic or empirical interests under their guidance.

Beyond fondren: exploring hidden book corners at rice, by bohan zhang, phd student in history..
Every Rice Owl knows that Fondren Library , affectionately known as "Fondy," is the go-to spot for reading and studying on campus. But did you know that there are several other cozy book corners scattered throughout Rice where you can relax with a good book? Please follow me to explore some of the hidden “libraries” at Rice.
1. Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE)
Located on the first floor of Herring Hall, the Center for Teaching Excellence is a hub for students interested in pedagogical training based on evidence-based practices. For graduate students and postdoctoral researchers at Rice, CTE offers a Certificate in Teaching and Learning , providing a combination of formal pedagogical training, practical experience, and mentoring that will prepare participants to be effective university teachers and instructors. CTE also offers a Graduate Workshop Series and Brown Bag Lunches throughout the academic year to facilitate discussions on various teaching and learning topics and to help students prepare for the academic job market.
In addition to these invaluable resources, CTE houses a book corner filled with selections chosen by CTE professors. These books focus on teaching and learning, providing a wealth of knowledge for those passionate about education.
2. The Department of Sociology
On the second floor of Kraft Hall, you'll find a treasure trove of scholarly works at the Department of Sociology’s book corner. This collection covers a wide array of sociological topics, including gender studies, LGBTQ issues, environmental sociology, race and ethnicity, economics, urbanization, criminology, statistics, social analysis, education, family and children, labor, social psychology, social change, public policy, and more. Whether you're a sociology enthusiast or just curious about the field, these books are worth exploring.
3. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Located on the second floor of Duncan Hall, the EC Little Library within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is a hidden gem. This cozy spot is perfect for both reading classic texts and socializing with fellow students in the George R. Brown School of Engineering. The library's collection spans a variety of subjects, including computational languages, psychology, organic chemistry, mathematics, and even Webster’s Dictionary.
4. Fondren outside Fondren
Last but not least, did you know that Fondren Library extends beyond its main building? The Gilbert & Ruth Whitaker Business Information Center (BIC), part of Fondren, is located on the second floor of McNair Hall at the Jones School of Business. The BIC features a spacious reading room, an online resource center, and additional study spaces stocked with reference materials and journals. It's a great place to find a wide range of business-related resources
