Transforming discoveries into better patient care

Research areas.

At the Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute (HHRI), we've been investigating the causes of and potential treatments for diseases since 1952. We support and oversee medical research at HCMC, Hennepin Healthcare's acute care and teaching hospital.  Our research topics are diverse with a focus on four areas: Acute Care/Trauma, Addiction, Health Services and Infectious Diseases (HIV/AIDS). Innovative discoveries made at HHRI improve the lives of patients in our local community and across the globe.

Minnesota Clinical Research Alliance

Educating the public about the importance of clinical research in Minnesota.

What are clinical trials .

Clinical trials are research studies that generate data to support FDA approval of a new medicine or a new indication for an existing medication. They also grant participants early access to new medicines, which are being developed to help combat chronic and serious diseases. Without clinical trials, new medicines could not be approved and—most importantly—made available to patients who need them.

In Minnesota, thousands of clinical trials have targeted diseases and conditions like asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. By volunteering for a clinical trial, patients take an active role in their health care by helping researchers test new treatments.

Economic Impact

Clinical researchers and biopharmaceutical companies in Minnesota are busy developing life-saving treatments right here in your backyard. Not only does this research produce healthcare innovations, it also has a huge impact on the state's economy.

The Minnesota Clinical Research Alliance (MCRA) is a collaborative effort among key segments of Minnesota's medical research community.

medical research companies in mn

We are dedicated to educating the public, elected officials and the media about the importance of clinical research to patients, the health care system and the state’s economy. Our mission is for Minnesota to be recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in patient care, innovation and collaboration for the benefit of our patients.

We work together to:

  • Provide clinical research education and support for elected officials, the media, manufacturers, vendors, service providers and academic partners.
  • Defining clinical research in easily understandable terms that educate all to the instrumental role our industry plays in healthcare and the economy.
  • Ensure patient safety and clinical research integrity continue to be the foundation of our efforts.

Who conducts clinical trials?

Clinical trials are conducted by physicians, investigators and researchers at various organizations including local research institutions, hospitals and universities.

Why should I participate in a clinical trial?

Participation in a clinical trial often provides patients access to potential new treatments and to expert health care at leading institutions. By participating in a clinical trial, you play an active role in your health and the health of others by contributing to scientific knowledge that may lead to potential new medical treatments for future patients.

Are clinical trials safe?

Clinical trials are tightly regulated to ensure maximum safety for participants.

All clinical trials involving human participants are monitored by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure high safety standards and processes are followed. IRBs are comprised of at least five members with a wide range of backgrounds, including at least one scientist, at least one non-scientist (such as a lawyer or professor) and at least one member of the community who is not connected to the institution or sponsor of the trial. Additionally, federal agencies such as the Office of Human Subjects Research Protection and Food and Drug Administration oversee clinical trials to ensure patient safety.

By the time a potential new treatment is allowed to be tested in patients, it has been in development for at least three to six years, meaning it’s already been through rigorous preclinical testing. A treatment must be backed by valid scientific evidence that shows it is likely to be safe before it can be administered to patients in a clinical trial.

As with any medical treatment, participation in a clinical trial offers benefits and risks. Researchers conducting clinical trials will clearly explain the potential benefits and risks, so you can feel confident about making the best decision in consultation with your doctor. Participants always have the right to end their participation at any time, even if the study is not over. According to the Center for Information and Study on Clinical Research Participation, most clinical trials participants indicate they would participate again.

Minnesota’s Medical Alley is the No. 1 medical technology cluster for innovation in the world. Home to medical technology companies like Medtronic, Mayo Clinic, and Starkey Hearing, there are many reasons to be a proud employee at one of 750 medical innovators.

This booming medical technology industry in Minnesota has fueled billions of dollars in economic growth, as well as thousands of jobs in medical device manufacturing and assembly. In fact, Minnesota medical device manufacturing jobs have grown 14% over the past five years creating some of the best medical technology jobs in the country. But which companies are contributing to job growth the most?

With our 50 years of experience as a full-service staffing agency , we’ve worked with some of Minnesota’s top medical device manufacturing and healthcare companies. Join us as we list some of the top medical technology companies that are developing Minnesota’s medical industry and expanding local job opportunities.

1. Medtronic

medtronic logo

Amidst skepticism that Medtronic’s move to Ireland will eliminate U.S.-based jobs, their CEO, Omar Ishrak, is insistent that this is a misconception. In fact, he believes it will result in job growth for Minnesota and the U.S. This was proven to be true when they added around 300 more jobs to their offices in Plymouth, MN compared to previous years when they were headquartered there. Furthermore, Medtronic has pledged to add at least 1,000 jobs in Minnesota before 2020, showing that they remain committed to developing Minnesota’s medical technology job market.

2. Boston Scientific Corp.

Boston Scientific Logo

Even though Boston Scientific is headquartered in Marlborough, MA they have more employees working in Minnesota overall. In fact, 7,000 of their 25,000 employees worldwide are based out of their Minnesota offices, whereas only 4,000 are based in Marlborough. So despite their name and home base, Boston Scientific is a major player for Minnesota’s medical technology job market.

To continue offering revolutionary inventions and expertise, St. Jude Medical recently merged with another major player, Abbott Laboratories. Even with a merger that introduced a new headquarters in Illinois, their office in St. Paul, MN remains the top employment center for the company. Today, Minnesota is the home of 4,000 St. Jude Medical employees , which is roughly 22% of their overall workforce. So while they’re base of operations may shift to Abbott in Illinois, St. Jude Medical has a strong and growing presence in Minnesota, offering plenty of medical assembly jobs in St. Paul, MN as well as other job opportunities.

“Our biggest focus is on culture,” CEO Jeff McCaulley told the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal . “[We want] to create a culture that’s much more innovative, much bolder in its thinking, much more aggressive in its plans around new products and just how far we can push.”

Given their new cultural direction, Smiths Medical is a great place to work for your own professional development.

We discovered an opportunity to supply these chains with fresher, higher quality, and consistent pizza sauces in Cryovac™ pouches. Our success at matching the taste of restaurant sauces while producing a volume product gave our customers with multiple locations the ability to serve the same sauce at every location. The growth of our customer base in the food service arena naturally led to making retail-size sauces for many of the leading Italian restaurants and chains. These chains recognized an opportunity to expand their customer base by putting their private label on the shelves of their local supermarkets. Today we are producing these sauces for hundreds of chains nationwide, both for the back of the house in their restaurants, and the retail jar on the grocery shelf in their respective communities.

2497 7th Avenue East North Saint Paul, MN, 55109 United States Maple Island Inc. has a long and diverse history in the food industry. After it’s birth on a 1930’s dairy farm in Stillwater, Minnesota, Maple Island grew into a leading manufacturer and distributor of dairy products throughout the U.S. and the World. The company slogan of that time, “Maple Island Means Milk” meant just that. Outside of the “normal” dairy products of the day, Maple Island was a pioneer of many products and processes including developing and operating one of the first patented spray-dryers. A large portion of Maple Islands’ early success is directly tied to the partnerships forged with private label customers. Together, innovative products were developed and produced at Maple Island facilities. This is a large part of Maple Island’s focus today. The challenges of change have always been met head-on at Maple Island. Over the last several decades, the focus has been the blending and processing of food powders for confidential contract packaging under our valued customers names and brands. We also continue to support our company by the processing and packaging of the Maple Island ® line of premium dairy powders including our agglomerated Instant Nonfat Dry Milk, a premium instant product surpassed in quality and consistency by none. We thank you for visiting the Maple Island web site. The following pages will give you a glimpse of Maple Island’s focus, processes, and capabilities. You will see that today Maple Island means “Quality Food Powder Processing and Packaging.”

1246 University Ave W #301, St Paul, MN 55104 The U.S. pharmaceutical industry spends approximately $100 billion annually to develop new pharmaceutical drugs and medical devices. Today, a successful new drug takes on average 15 years and more than $1 billion to bring to market. One reason for the high cost and long development cycle is that current animal models are used exclusively to test drug safety because they are poor predictors of patient response. As a result, the only way to determine drug efficacy is through human trials which are slow and expensive to conduct. The company is developing animal models with defined genetic conditions identical to those found in human patients. The pharmaceutical and medical device industries will use our products to reduce both skyrocketing costs and lengthy product development times.

PO Box 10 113 Chelsea Road Monticello, MN 55362 Co-owners Mike and Stan Brey grew up in the small Southern Minnesota farming community of Lucan. The years they spent working on the farm there evolved into what would become a lifelong career in the agricultural industry for the two brothers. They founded SMA in 1975. The first job for the new company was a 50K bushel steel workhouse for Zip Feed in Huron, SD, a building that still stands today. Along with workhouses, the early projects for SMA consisted largely of feed mills and overhead load out systems using a Panelizer bin system. As the amount of commodities increased the demands of the industry soon changed. SMA recognized the new needs of the facilities and began constructing round corrugated steel bins to existing workhouses at country elevators. In the mid 1980’s railway systems began to offer elevators shipping ratio incentives. This created a need to move larger volumes of product in a much shorter period of time. SMA again met the demand by beginning to build 25 car train loader facilities. Today the loading facilities have progressed to loop tracks which load 110 cars in a 6-12 hour period. To allow facilities enough product on site for the train loading systems SMA now offers 1.5 to 3 million bushel piler systems, steel bins with up 1.5 million bushel capacity and flat storage buildings which can hold up to 6 million bushels. As they have since the beginning, SMA continues to meet the challenges of a constantly changing industry to this day.

The Contract Research Map is owned and maintained by Scientist.com. It was created to help researchers in the life sciences identify and connect with contract research organizations (CROs) based on geography. Updated nightly, this map features all of the available CROs within our network, so you can order services with a few clicks. Click on a specific country, scroll on the map itself or type into the search bar at the top—there are many ways to find the location and suppliers that you’re looking for. From Argentina to New Zealand, use this map to connect with a CRO near you.

We believe that every researcher across the world should be able to connect with the thousands of global CROs that exist and have the opportunity to work together. Like many industries, the life science supply chain has been disrupted over the last year. But there are many other circumstances such as international customs regulations or sensitive shipping times that create limitations around which countries are feasible to partner with. Sometimes, finding a CRO based in a country that best suits your research needs is imperative. We hope this contract research map allows you to find the right partner in the right place at the right time.

Have questions or feedback? We’d love to help. You can find our FAQs and contact information on the Learn more page.

Interested in connecting with one or more of the contract research organizations listed on this map? By clicking on the company’s name, you will be directed to their supplier profile on the Scientist.com marketplace. Once you set up a marketplace account you can start the ordering process immediately.

New Science and Medical Research Hub Opens in Atlanta

Georgia Institute of Technology and the Trammell Crow Company are transforming Atlanta’s booming skyline with the launch of the first phase of Science Square, a pioneering mixed-use development dedicated to biological sciences and medical research and the technology to advance those fields. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for April 25.

“The opening of Science Square’s first phase represents one of the most exciting developments to come to Atlanta in recent years,” said Ángel Cabrera, president of Georgia Tech. “The greatest advances in innovation often emerge from dense technological ecosystems, and Science Square provides our city with its first biomedical research district, which will help innovators develop and scale their ideas into marketable solutions.”

Science Square’s first phase includes Science Square Labs, a 13-story purpose-built tower with state-of-the-art infrastructure to accommodate wet and dry labs and clean room space. To promote overall energy efficiency as well as sustainability, the complex houses a massive 38,000-square-foot solar panel. The solar panel system is in addition to an energy recovery system that extracts energy from the building’s exhaust air and returns it to the building’s HVAC system, reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Electrochromic windows, which tint during the day to block ultraviolet rays and steady the temperature while also controlling the environment — key in research labs — are also featured throughout the building.

Equipped with technologically advanced amenities and infrastructure, Science Square Labs serves as a nexus for groundbreaking research, enabling collaboration between academia, industry, and startup ventures. Portal Innovations, a company specializing in life sciences venture development, is among the first tenants to establish operations at Science Square, as Atlanta takes center stage as the country’s top city for research and development employment growth.

The opening of the complex’s first phase, just south of Georgia Tech’s campus and totaling 18 acres, also features retail space and The Grace Residences developed by High Street Residential, TCC's residential subsidiary. The 280-unit multifamily tower, already welcoming tenants, is named in honor of renowned Atlanta leader and Georgia State Representative Grace Towns Hamilton who spent many years championing this community.

Beyond its scientific endeavors, Science Square embodies Georgia Tech’s commitment to uplifting the local community. By collaborating with organizations like Westside Works, Science Square aims to empower residents through targeted workforce development initiatives and economic opportunities.

“This mixed-use development adds immense value to Atlanta’s west side and will lead the development of pioneering medical advances with the power to improve and save lives,” President Cabrera added.

Got tinnitus a device that tickles the tongue helps this musician find relief.

After using the Lenire device for an hour each day for 12 weeks, Victoria Banks says her tinnitus is "barely noticeable."

Imagine if every moment is filled with a high-pitched buzz or ring that you can't turn off.

More than 25 million adults in the U.S., have a condition called tinnitus, according to the American Tinnitus Association. It can be stressful, even panic-inducing and difficult to manage. Dozens of factors can contribute to the onset of tinnitus, including hearing loss, exposure to loud noise or a viral illness.

There's no cure, but there are a range of strategies to reduce the symptoms and make it less bothersome, including hearing aids, mindfulness therapy , and one newer option – a device approved by the FDA to treat tinnitus using electrical stimulation of the tongue.

The device has helped Victoria Banks, a singer and songwriter in Nashville, Tenn., who developed tinnitus about three years ago.

"The noise in my head felt like a bunch of cicadas," Banks says. "It was terrifying." The buzz made it difficult for her to sing and listen to music. "It can be absolutely debilitating," she says.

Tinnitus Bothers Millions Of Americans. Here's How To Turn Down The Noise

Shots - Health News

Tinnitus bothers millions of americans. here's how to turn down the noise.

Banks tried taking dietary supplements , but those didn't help. She also stepped up exercise, but that didn't bring relief either. Then she read about a device called Lenire, which was approved by the FDA in March 2023. It includes a plastic mouthpiece with stainless steel electrodes that electrically stimulate the tongue. It is the first device of its kind to be approved for tinnitus.

"This had worked for other people, and I thought I'm willing to try anything at this point," Banks recalls.

She sought out audiologist Brian Fligor, who treats severe cases of tinnitus in the Boston area. Fligor was impressed by the results of a clinical trial that found 84% of participants who tried Lenire experienced a significant reduction in symptoms. He became one of the first providers in the U.S. to use the device with his patients. Fligor also served on an advisory panel assembled by the company who developed it.

"A good candidate for this device is somebody who's had tinnitus for at least three months," Fligor says, emphasizing that people should be evaluated first to make sure there's not an underlying medical issue.

Tinnitus often accompanies hearing loss, but Victoria Banks' hearing was fine and she had no other medical issue, so she was a good candidate.

Banks used the device for an hour each day for 12 weeks. During the hour-long sessions, the electrical stimulation "tickles" the tongue, she says. In addition, the device includes a set of headphones that play a series of tones and ocean-wave sounds.

The device works, in part, by shifting the brain's attention away from the buzz. We're wired to focus on important information coming into our brains, Fligor says. Think of it as a spotlight at a show pointed at the most important thing on the stage. "When you have tinnitus and you're frustrated or angry or scared by it, that spotlight gets really strong and focused on the tinnitus," Fligor says.

"It's the combination of what you're feeling through the nerves in your tongue and what you're hearing through your ears happening in synchrony that causes the spotlight in your brain to not be so stuck on the tinnitus," Fligor explains.

A clinical trial found 84% of people who used the device experienced a significant reduction in symptoms.

"It unsticks your spotlight" and helps desensitize people to the perceived noise that their tinnitus creates, he says.

Banks says the ringing in her ears did not completely disappear, but now it's barely noticeable on most days.

"It's kind of like if I lived near a waterfall and the waterfall was constantly going," she says. Over time, the waterfall sound fades out of consciousness.

"My brain is now focusing on other things," and the buzz is no longer so distracting. She's back to listening to music, writing music, and performing music." I'm doing all of those things," she says.

When the buzz comes back into focus, Banks says a refresher session with the device helps.

A clinical trial found that 84% of people who tried Lenire , saw significant improvements in their condition. To measure changes, the participants took a questionnaire that asked them to rate how much tinnitus was impacting their sleep, sense of control, feelings of well-being and quality of life. After 12 weeks of using the device, participants improved by an average of 14 points.

"Where this device fits into the big picture, is that it's not a cure-all, but it's quickly become my go-to," for people who do not respond to other ways of managing tinnitus, Fligor says.

One down-side is the cost. Banks paid about $4,000 for the Lenire device, and insurance doesn't cover it. She put the expense on her credit card and paid it off gradually.

Fligor hopes that as the evidence of its effectiveness accumulates, insurers will begin to cover it. Despite the cost, more than 80% of participants in the clinical trial said they would recommend the device to a friend with tinnitus.

But, it's unclear how long the benefits last. Clinical trials have only evaluated Lenire over a 1-year period. "How durable are the effects? We don't really know yet," says audiologist Marc Fagelson, the scientific advisory committee chair of the American Tinnitus Association. He says research is promising but there's still more to learn.

Fagelson says the first step he takes with his patients is an evaluation for hearing loss. Research shows that hearing aids can be an effective treatment for tinnitus among people who have both tinnitus and hearing loss, which is much more common among older adults. An estimated one-third of adults 65 years of age and older who have hearing loss, also have tinnitus.

"We do see a lot of patients, even with very mild loss, who benefit from hearing aids," Fagelson says, but in his experience it's about 50-50 in terms of improving tinnitus. Often, he says people with tinnitus need to explore options beyond hearing aids.

Bruce Freeman , a scientist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, says he's benefitted from both hearing aids and Lenire. He was fitted for the device in Ireland where it was developed, before it was available in the U.S.

Freeman agrees that the ringing never truly disappears, but the device has helped him manage the condition. He describes the sounds that play through the device headphones as very calming and "almost hypnotic" and combined with the tongue vibration, it's helped desensitize him to the ring.

Freeman – who is a research scientist – says he's impressed with the results of research, including a study published in Nature, Scientific Reports that points to significant improvements among clinical trial participants with tinnitus.

Freeman experienced a return of his symptoms when he stopped using the device. "Without it the tinnitus got worse," he says. Then, when he resumed use, it improved.

Freeman believes his long-term exposure to noisy instruments in his research laboratory may have played a role in his condition, and also a neck injury from a bicycle accident that fractured his vertebra. "All of those things converged," he says.

Freeman has developed several habits that help keep the high-pitched ring out of his consciousness and maintain good health. "One thing that does wonders is swimming," he says, pointing to the swooshing sound of water in his ears. "That's a form of mindfulness," he explains.

When it comes to the ring of tinnitus, "it comes and goes," Freeman says. For now, it has subsided into the background, he told me with a sense of relief. "The last two years have been great," he says – a combination of the device, hearing aids and the mindfulness that comes from a swim.

Fact Sheet on FTC’s Proposed Final Noncompete Rule

Facebook

  • Competition
  • Office of Policy Planning
  • Bureau of Competition

The following outline provides a high-level overview of the FTC’s proposed final rule :

  • Specifically, the final rule provides that it is an unfair method of competition—and therefore a violation of Section 5 of the FTC Act—for employers to enter into noncompetes with workers after the effective date.
  • Fewer than 1% of workers are estimated to be senior executives under the final rule.
  • Specifically, the final rule defines the term “senior executive” to refer to workers earning more than $151,164 annually who are in a “policy-making position.”
  • Reduced health care costs: $74-$194 billion in reduced spending on physician services over the next decade.
  • New business formation: 2.7% increase in the rate of new firm formation, resulting in over 8,500 additional new businesses created each year.
  • This reflects an estimated increase of about 3,000 to 5,000 new patents in the first year noncompetes are banned, rising to about 30,000-53,000 in the tenth year.
  • This represents an estimated increase of 11-19% annually over a ten-year period.
  • The average worker’s earnings will rise an estimated extra $524 per year.
