The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many consider your scores if you choose to submit them.

JMU hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Otherwise, don't."

Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to JMU will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. We therefore recommend that you consider taking the SAT or ACT, and doing well.

JMU SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school's average score.

Average SAT: 1205

The average SAT score composite at JMU is a 1205 on the 1600 SAT scale.

This score makes JMU Competitive for SAT test scores.

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1160, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1310. In other words, a 1160 on the SAT places you below average, while a 1310 will move you up to above average .

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

JMU has the Score Choice policy of "Highest Section."

This is also known as "superscoring." This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Of all the scores they receive, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all SAT test dates you submit .

For example, say you submit the following 3 test scores:

Even though the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000, JMU will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 1000 to 1400 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and JMU forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1160, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it . You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on. This will give you the highest Superscore possible.

JMU ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, JMU likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 26

The average ACT score at JMU is 26. This score makes JMU Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 23, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 29.

Even though JMU likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 23 or below, you'll have a harder time getting in, unless you have something else impressive in your application.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 23 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

We weren't able to find the school's exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to JMU, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 23.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

JMU considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is lightly selective, you have a great shot at getting in, as long as you don't fall well below average . Aim for a 1160 SAT or a 23 ACT or higher, and you'll almost certainly get an offer of admission. As long as you meet the rest of the application requirements below, you'll be a shoo-in.

But if you score below our recommended target score, you may be one of the very few unlucky people to get rejected.

Completing your application is easy! STEP 1: Submit your application ($70 fee). Step 2:  Submit an official high school transcript, including any dual-enrollment courses you may be taking. For transcripts to be considered official, they must be sent through the Common App, or another secure provider such as Naviance/Parchment, e-Scrip Safe, etc., or by mail from your school. If sending by mail, please use the following address: James Madison University Office of Admissions – MSC 0101 100 E Grace Street Harrisonburg, VA 22807 Please note, JMU will not accept recommendation letters that arrive via Parchment, postal mail, etc.

To apply for transfer admission, you should have completed at least 24 credit hours post high-school graduation before you would start classes at JMU. If you’ll have completed less than 24 credit hours, please contact your regional recruiter . Priority is given to applicants with associate degrees, or at least 48 college credits. Please chance me for admission at James Madison University

What are my chances of getting accepted into James Madison University? I am a junior with a 3.46uw GPA. I’ve taken honors bio and AP Lang. I will be taking AP lit, AP Government, and AP Psych. I have also taken 3 years of Spanish and 1 year of Latin. I am South Asian ( mostly worried about this since JMU seems to accept predominantly white). Upper Middle class in NOVA. I am also not submitting an act/sat since the school is test-optional. My EC’s are: Volunteer firefighter, assistant manager at a company, 2 clubs ( HOSA and the Muslim association club), freshman basketball manager, boxing at a local gym, I tutor kids, and I also worked at a kids birthday party playhouse. I will also be submitting a Letter of recommendation and a supplemental essay ( optional ). I’ve been also trying to show demonstrated interest by attending their webinars and following them on social media. I will also send out an email later on next year to my admissions representative, Thank you! I have a feeling I won’t get in but I’m trying to be optimistic about it:) ps: idk if this helps but I’m fluent in Urdu and Arabic.

Since you are a junior, you seem well ahead of the game. Unless the application has changed since last year when my DD applied, JMU only looks at guidance counselor recommendation and their application has a personal statement. Make sure you have a good working relationship with your GC at school and let them know of your interest in JMU. Ask your HS English teacher to review your personal statement next year when you are a senior. JMU does not “track” demonstrated interest. However, if you have any specific questions about their curriculum or your course plan for next year, then look up your local JMU Admissions officer (on JMU website) and email them with your questions. Your local AO is the person who reviews applications from your area/high school. I would also recommend applying EA, then if you get deferred you will automatically be considered in the RD pool. Keep focused this year to finish strong in your coursework and you probably have a good chance at acceptance. (just my opinion)

WRT: Asians at JMU. My DD is Asian and had/has the same concerns about JMU being predominantly white. Coming from the diversity of NOVA, it does require adapting. However, every year JMU seems more focused on admitting a greater diverse population, so I do think this may work to your benefit. Assuming you decide to attend, just plan to seek out clubs where you feel comfortable. The JMU population is a welcoming community.

Wisconsin Madison Supplemental essay

I have my supplemental essay written out but i’m not sure if I follow the prompt enough. I talk about why my major at the beginning of the essay, but the rest of the essay talks about the opportunities the college offers with my major and other activities and i sprinkle in some sentences that say why I want to do my major in those paragraphs. Does it need to be 50/50 like 50% why major and 50% why the college or is what i’m doing fine?

Dilemmas in Education: A Casebook for Ethical Reasoning (Faculty Publications)

Because ethical reasoning is an inherent part of the Education profession, our College is positioned to generate quality scholarship in this area. However, few faculty can claim ethics as their primary area of specialty. This project aims to draw on the collective experiences and literature reviews of faculty in our College, and their school and community partners, to develop a representative case study guidebook titled, Dilemmas in Education: A Case Book for Ethical Reasoning. This will be published in the JMU Scholarly Commons. We hope to generate a much deeper understanding of the dilemmas, perspectives and strategies used to apply the Madison Collaborative 8 key questions framework in Education.

International Journal on Responsibility (Faculty Publications)

The International Journal on Responsibility (IJR) (ISSN: 2576-0955) is an international, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary forum for theoretical, practical, and methodological explorations into the various and complex issues of responsibility. Animated by the question “Who or what is responsible to do what for whom?,” IJR is a broad-ranging journal that incorporates insights from the full range of academic and practical inquiry from the humanities and the social and natural sciences related to addressing the diverse aspects of responsibility.

IJR publishes scholarship and creative works on responsibility. The contents examine theoretical, empirical, intellectual, practical, policy, and ethical issues relating to responsibility. In addition, the journal encourages research and reporting on ways in which responsibility relates to issues ranging from the individual to broad public concern, past, present, and future. Themes include the use of responsibility in academic and nonacademic settings; the development of new perspectives on the topic of responsibility; the application of a focus on responsibility in practical problems; and, the historical and interdisciplinary dimensions of responsibility.

Affiliated with the Gandhi Center and published by JMU (James Madison University) Libraries, IJR is an open access journal that does not charge production costs. It is listed in Ulrich’s Periodicals directory.

Prior issues of IJR have been published under multiple licenses (CC BY-NC-SA and CC BY-NC-ND). IJR now publishes accepted manuscripts under a Creative Commons License ( CC BY-NC-SA license ), which allows authors to retain full copyright of their work and grants IJR a perpetual non-exclusive CC license enabling publication. Current Scholarship

The sixth volume focuses on the various responsibilities criminal justice agents have for producing just outcomes in the criminal justice system. Guest edited by Dr. Heather L. Scheuerman (James Madison University), contributors to this special issue cover a wide range of topics illustrating the complexities of responsibility for law enforcement, the courts, and corrections. Specifically, the issue discusses responsibilities of 1) police in field booking arrests; 2) appellate courts in responding to prosecutorial misconduct; 3) the influence of prior legal background on judicial sentencing considerations; 4) how attorneys and advocates view judicial responsibilities to understanding technology in cyberstalking and cyberharassment cases; 5) probation officers in sentencing recommendations; and 6) the surety in the Canadian bail system.

Lexia: Undergraduate Journal in Writing, Rhetoric & Technical Communication (Undergraduate Publications)

Lexia is a student-run online journal that published innovative student work produced by students in The School of Writing, Rhetoric & Technical Communication from 2013 to 2017. Founded in 2005 by Dr. Bruce Gleason at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota and moving to James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia under the guidance of Dr. David Stringham in 2019, the purpose of Research and Issues in Music Education (RIME) is to provide a forum devoted to thorough research and commentary that energizes, informs, advances, and reforms the practice and pedagogy of music teaching.

The online format of RIME brings music education research into real time, with the possibility of publishing articles immediately upon acceptance rather than being bound by artificial publication dates and deadlines or unnecessary restraints on length. While articles and forums are catalogued for citation purposes in biannual issues, RIME volumes and issues are flexibly determined and research, past and present, published by the journal will be continually available from the web site in its entirety.

An electronic format also allows the journal to present material in a more comprehensive format than is typically available with traditional print media. Interactive materials can be linked from the body of a manuscript, and appropriate sound and/or video files that support or illustrate research can be included.

The Virginia Teacher (JMU Special Collections)

The Virginia Teacher is a monthly periodical published by the State Normal School, from 1920-1939. It includes scholarly articles about education, news from the school, editorials, correspondences, and reports from alumnae. The Virginia Teacher also issued several supplemental issues each year, which contain course catalog information such faculty listings, academic calendars, and course descriptions.

Kemerovo Oblast—Kuzbass is situated in southern central Russia. Krasnoyarsk Krai and Khakasiya lie to the east, Tomsk Oblast to the north, Novosibirsk Oblast to the west, and Altai Krai and the Republic of Altai to the south-west. Kemerovo was founded in 1918 as Shcheglovsk. It became the administrative centre of the Oblast upon its formation on 26 January 1943. The city is at the centre of Russia’s principal coal mining area. In 1998 Tuleyev signed a framework agreement with the federal Government on the delimitation of powers, which was accompanied by 10 accords aimed at strengthening the regional economy. The Oblast’s main industrial centres are at Kemerovo, Novokuznetsk, Prokopyevsk, Kiselyovsk and Leninsk-Kuznetskii. Kemerovo Oblast’s agriculture consists mainly of potato and grain production, animal husbandry and beekeeping. The Oblast is the largest producer of coal among the federal subjects, and a principal producer of steel.
