Recruiter Insight: Why this resume works in 2022
Tips to help you write your iot engineering manager resume in 2024, highlight your rare and important iot technical skills.
IoT technology is an emerging field that is gaining traction, so not many people have the requisite skills recruiters are looking for. If you have those skills, splash them all over your resume. The sample IoT engineering manager's resume has those skills stated in the lower part of their document.
State your strongest competencies in the resume summary section
Hiring managers may not have the time to read through the content of all resumes that make it past the ATS filters. At most, they spend a couple of seconds on each resume. One way to get their attention is to include some of your strongest data or engineering-focused achievements in the summary at the top of your data engineering resume.
As a hiring manager who has recruited IoT Engineering Managers at companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, I've seen countless resumes over the years. The best resumes that catch my attention are the ones that effectively showcase the candidate's technical expertise, leadership skills, and ability to drive results in IoT projects. In this article, we'll share some tips to help you create a standout resume for an IoT Engineering Manager position.
Highlight your IoT project experience
Recruiters want to see your hands-on experience in IoT projects. Instead of just listing your responsibilities, provide specific examples of projects you led and the impact you made:
- Led a team of 12 engineers to develop and launch a new IoT platform, resulting in a 25% increase in device connectivity and a 30% reduction in latency
- Spearheaded the development of an IoT solution for smart home devices, which increased customer adoption by 40% and generated $5M in new revenue
Quantify your achievements whenever possible, as it helps recruiters understand the scale and significance of your contributions.
Showcase your technical skills
As an IoT Engineering Manager, you need a strong technical foundation. Highlight your expertise in relevant areas such as:
- IoT protocols and standards (e.g., MQTT, CoAP, Bluetooth)
- Cloud platforms (e.g., AWS IoT, Azure IoT)
- Programming languages (e.g., C++, Python, Java)
- Embedded systems and hardware design
Don't just list the skills; provide context on how you applied them in your roles. For example:
- Designed and implemented a secure firmware update system using AWS IoT Device Management, reducing manual effort by 80%
Demonstrate your leadership abilities
IoT Engineering Managers are responsible for leading and mentoring teams. Showcase your leadership experience and the impact you had on your team and the organization:
- Managed a distributed team of 15 IoT engineers across 3 countries, driving a culture of innovation and continuous improvement
- Implemented an agile development process, which increased team productivity by 30% and reduced time-to-market by 20%
Highlight your ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as product management, design, and operations. Demonstrate how you communicated effectively and built strong relationships to achieve common goals.
Include relevant certifications and education
While experience is crucial, relevant certifications and education can help you stand out. Some certifications that are valuable for IoT Engineering Managers include:
- AWS Certified IoT Specialty
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
- Certified IoT Professional (CIoTP)
If you have a degree in a relevant field, such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Information Technology, make sure to include it in your education section.
Tailor your resume to the job description
Every company has different requirements and priorities for an IoT Engineering Manager role. Tailor your resume to the specific job you're applying for by:
- Using keywords from the job description
- Highlighting experiences and skills that match the requirements
- Customizing your summary or objective statement to align with the company's goals
For example, if the job description emphasizes experience with a specific IoT platform, make sure to showcase your relevant projects and expertise with that platform.
Show your impact beyond the IoT team
As an IoT Engineering Manager, your work has a broader impact on the company's success. Demonstrate how your efforts contributed to business outcomes, such as:
- Developed an IoT-based predictive maintenance solution that reduced equipment downtime by 30%, saving the company $2M in annual maintenance costs
- Led the implementation of an IoT fleet management system, which improved vehicle utilization by 25% and increased customer satisfaction scores by 15%
By showing the business value you delivered, you'll demonstrate your ability to align technical initiatives with company goals, a key skill for IoT Engineering Managers.
Writing Your IoT Engineering Manager Resume: Section By Section
summary.
Your resume summary is an optional 2-4 sentence blurb at the top of your resume that gives an overview of your professional background and key qualifications. While a summary isn't required, it can be beneficial for IoT engineering managers to provide additional context, especially if you're a career changer or have extensive experience.
A well-written summary should be concise, tailored to the specific job you're applying for, and highlight your most relevant skills and accomplishments. Avoid using generic buzzwords or soft skills, and instead focus on demonstrating your technical expertise and leadership abilities.

1. Highlight your IoT expertise and leadership skills
When crafting your summary, emphasize your experience managing IoT projects and teams. Showcase your technical knowledge in areas such as embedded systems, wireless protocols, and cloud computing.
Additionally, highlight your leadership skills and how you've successfully guided teams to deliver complex IoT solutions. For example:
- IoT engineering manager with 8+ years of experience leading cross-functional teams to develop and deploy large-scale IoT solutions in the automotive industry.
- Proven track record of managing IoT projects from concept to completion, ensuring on-time delivery and high-quality results.
Avoid generic statements that could apply to any engineering manager, such as:
- Experienced engineering manager with strong leadership skills.
- Proven ability to manage projects and teams.
2. Quantify your impact and achievements
To make your summary more impactful, include quantifiable achievements that demonstrate your success as an IoT engineering manager. Use metrics such as the size of the teams you've managed, the scope of projects you've led, or the business impact of your work.
Here's an example of a summary that effectively quantifies achievements:
IoT engineering manager with a proven track record of leading teams of up to 20 engineers to deliver innovative IoT solutions. Spearheaded the development of a smart factory platform that reduced operational costs by 15% and increased production efficiency by 20%. Skilled in agile methodologies, cloud computing, and embedded systems design.
Avoid using vague or unsubstantiated claims, such as:
Experienced IoT engineering manager with a history of delivering successful projects. Strong technical skills and leadership abilities.
Experience
When writing your work experience section for an IoT engineering manager resume, focus on showcasing your leadership abilities, technical expertise, and the impact you've made in previous roles. Highlight specific projects, technologies, and methodologies you've worked with to demonstrate your knowledge and skills in the field.
1. Quantify your achievements with metrics
To make your work experience section more impactful, use specific numbers and metrics to quantify your achievements. This helps hiring managers understand the scale and significance of your contributions. For example:
- Led a team of 12 engineers to develop and deploy an IoT solution that reduced energy consumption by 25% across 50 manufacturing plants
- Implemented a predictive maintenance system using IoT sensors, resulting in a 30% reduction in downtime and saving the company $500,000 annually
Avoid using vague statements without supporting data, such as:
- Improved efficiency of IoT systems
- Developed IoT solutions for various industries
2. Showcase your leadership and project management skills
As an IoT engineering manager, your leadership and project management abilities are crucial. Highlight instances where you successfully led cross-functional teams, managed complex projects, and delivered results. For example:
- Spearheaded the development of a cloud-based IoT platform, coordinating efforts across software, hardware, and data science teams
- Managed a $2 million budget and a team of 15 engineers to deliver an end-to-end IoT solution for a smart city project, completing the project on time and under budget
Avoid simply listing your responsibilities without demonstrating your leadership impact, such as:
- Managed a team of IoT engineers
- Oversaw IoT projects from concept to deployment
3. Highlight relevant IoT technologies and methodologies
Demonstrate your technical expertise by mentioning specific IoT technologies, protocols, and methodologies you've worked with. This helps showcase your knowledge and familiarity with industry-standard tools and practices. For example:
- Designed and implemented IoT solutions using MQTT, CoAP, and REST APIs to enable real-time data collection and analysis
- Leveraged AWS IoT Core, Azure IoT Hub, and Google Cloud IoT to build scalable and secure cloud-based IoT platforms

Avoid using generic statements that don't highlight your specific technical skills, such as:
- Worked with various IoT technologies
- Familiar with cloud platforms
4. Demonstrate your ability to collaborate and communicate
As an IoT engineering manager, your ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders is essential. Highlight instances where you successfully collaborated with other departments or communicated complex ideas to diverse audiences. For example:
- Collaborated with product management and UX teams to define product requirements and ensure seamless integration of IoT features
- Presented technical concepts and project updates to executive leadership and clients, securing buy-in and funding for IoT initiatives
Avoid using generic statements that don't demonstrate your collaboration or communication skills, such as:
- Worked with other teams
- Communicated with stakeholders
Education
Your education section is a key part of your IoT engineering manager resume. It shows hiring managers that you have the knowledge and training to succeed in the role. Here are some tips to make your education section stand out.
1. Put your degree first
List your highest degree first, like your master's in computer engineering or MBA. Include the full degree name, university, and graduation year.
- Master of Science in Computer Engineering, University of Michigan, 2018
Don't just put the abbreviation:
- M.S. Computer Engineering, University of Michigan
2. Highlight IoT coursework
If you're a recent grad, include relevant IoT and engineering courses under your degree. This shows you have specific training for the IoT engineering manager role.
Good examples:
- Courses: Internet of Things, Embedded Systems, Wireless Sensor Networks, Machine Learning for IoT
- Relevant Coursework: IoT System Design, Edge Computing, MQTT Protocol, Raspberry Pi Programming
3. Add key certifications
Include any IoT or engineering management certifications in your education section too. This shows your expertise beyond just a degree.
Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Stanford University, 2015 Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, UCLA, 2013 Certifications: Cisco CCNA, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Project Management Professional (PMP)
Don't list certifications that aren't relevant or prestigious:
- Udemy IoT Fundamentals Certificate
- Coursera Python for Everybody Specialization
4. Keep it concise if you're experienced
If you're a senior IoT engineering manager, your education section can be very short. Hiring managers will focus more on your work accomplishments.
Example for a senior candidate:
M.S. Electrical Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University B.S. Computer Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Don't include dates or extra details:
Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, 1995-1997, GPA 3.8 Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL, 1991-1995, GPA 3.6, Dean's List
Skills
Your skills section is one of the most important parts of your IoT Engineering Manager resume. It's where you showcase your technical expertise and prove to employers that you have the right abilities for the job. In this section, we'll break down the key steps to writing a compelling skills section that will catch the attention of hiring managers and help you land your dream IoT role.
1. Highlight IoT-specific technical skills
As an IoT Engineering Manager, you need to demonstrate a wide range of technical skills related to IoT devices, networks, and platforms. Some key skills to include:
- IoT Protocols : MQTT, CoAP, HTTP, AMQP
- Wireless Technologies : WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, LoRaWAN
- Cloud Platforms : AWS IoT, Azure IoT, Google Cloud IoT
- Programming Languages : C, C++, Python, Java
- Embedded Systems : Microcontrollers, Sensors, Actuators
By listing these specific IoT skills, you show employers that you have the technical know-how to succeed in the role. Avoid generic skills like "IoT" or "Wireless" - get specific to stand out.
Not sure if your skills section has the right keywords? Try using a tool like Resume Worded's Targeted Resume to scan your resume against a job description and get personalized feedback on which skills you're missing.
2. Tailor skills to the job description
Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to automatically screen resumes for relevant skills. To ensure your resume makes it past the ATS, carefully review the job description and incorporate key skills and keywords into your skills section.
For example, if a job posting mentions specific IoT platforms like AWS IoT or Azure IoT, make sure to include those exact terms:
AWS IoT Azure IoT Hub Google Cloud IoT Core
Avoid simply listing "IoT Platforms" without mentioning the specific ones required for the role:
IoT Platforms
Tailoring your skills section is crucial, but don't forget about the rest of your resume. Use a tool like Resume Worded's Score My Resume to get instant feedback on your entire resume and ensure it's optimized for the IoT Engineering Manager role.
3. Categorize skills by type
To make your skills section easy to scan, consider grouping your skills into categories. For an IoT Engineering Manager, some potential categories could be:
- IoT Protocols : MQTT, CoAP, HTTP
- Cloud Platforms : AWS IoT, Azure IoT
- Programming Languages : C, C++, Python
- Wireless Technologies : WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee
This structured format helps showcase the breadth of your skills while still keeping the section concise and readable. Avoid simply listing skills in a long bullet list with no clear organization.
When categorizing your skills, prioritize the ones that are most relevant to the specific IoT Engineering Manager role you're applying for. Focus on your strongest areas of expertise.
4. Quantify your expertise level
In addition to listing your skills, consider indicating your level of proficiency for each one. This gives employers a clearer sense of your capabilities. For example:
Python (Expert) Java (Advanced) Embedded C (Intermediate)
Avoid simply listing skills with no indication of your expertise level:
Python Java Embedded C
Be honest about your proficiency levels - it's better to be upfront than to exaggerate and get caught in an interview or on the job.
When describing your expertise level, stick to simple labels like "Expert", "Advanced", and "Intermediate". Avoid long descriptions or excessive adjectives that clutter up the section.

Misusage of iot on resumes, how to demonstrate iot skills on your resume, what are the relevant certifications for iot skills on resume, most relevant jobs for iot skills, key takeaways.
The term "IoT" refers to the "Internet of Things," which is a skill involving the creation and management of devices that connect and exchange data with the internet and each other. Having IoT skills on your resume indicates to potential employers that you're familiar with networking, sensors, and data analytics, showing you can help create smart devices that communicate with each other. This could apply to anything from home appliances to complex industrial tools, which all aim to streamline operations and gather useful data.
However, listing IoT on your resume might not always be beneficial. One drawback could be that employers may assume you're overly specialized, especially if the job doesn't directly involve IoT projects. If IoT isn't central to the position, instead of prominently featuring it, you could focus on highlighting more universal skills like problem-solving or teamwork, which apply to a broader range of roles. Also, it's more effective to show how your IoT experience contributes to valuable outcomes like increased efficiency or improved user experiences.
In this article, you will learn:
- The potential drawbacks of prominently featuring IoT skills on your resume.
- Alternative skills to highlight for broader appeal to employers.
- Good and bad examples of how to list IoT skills in your resume, including synonyms and different phrasings.
Crafting an effective resume is a critical step in your job search, and representing your IoT skills accurately is key. However, clumsy or exaggerated applications of your IoT abilities can quickly turn off potential employers. You want to showcase a credible understanding and application of IoT, not to mislead with overrated proficiency which can backfire during interviews or on the job.
In the summary section, avoid overgeneralizing your expertise by claiming to be an "IoT expert capable of revolutionizing any tech platform," instead, be specific about your skills. In the experience section, listing "Master of all IoT protocols and devices" is misleading unless you truly have comprehensive mastery, which is rare and often not credible. In the achievements section, do not write something like, "Spearheaded an IoT project that exceeded all company objectives,” unless you can quantify these achievements with clear metrics or outcomes.
- Highlight your knowledge of IoT protocols such as MQTT, CoAP, and LWM2M by detailing project experiences where you utilized these protocols for effective device communication.
- Showcase your ability to manage and analyze data from sensors and IoT devices by mentioning your proficiency in IoT platforms like AWS IoT, Microsoft Azure IoT Suite, or the IBM Watson IoT Platform.
- Discuss your programming skills, especially in languages relevant to IoT such as Python, JavaScript, or C++, and provide examples of how you've developed applications for IoT systems.
- Illustrate your experience with edge computing and IoT security, making sure to describe how you've implemented secure practices to protect IoT devices from threats.
- Describe any IoT devices or systems that you have built or contributed to, focusing on how you solved practical problems through IoT technology and the impact of your work.

- Specific metrics are used to illustrate the tangible impact of the work done.
- By avoiding overused jargon, the experience stands out clearly to anyone reading it.
- The description avoids repetition and uses a diverse vocabulary to maintain the reader's interest.

Positioning your education section
If you're a technical project manager with active employment in the industry, your experience should attract immediate attention. In this case, position your education section after your experience. However, for those fresh from an educational institute or if you've recently upskilled with training like bootcamps or advanced degrees, list your education first. It'll highlight your recent efforts to enhance your know-how.
Remember, if you're at the entry level or a recent graduate, your education details should have a priority spot on your resume. Put the education section before your work experience to underline your academic accomplishments.
Technical certifications and languages
Certifications like PMP, Prince2, or CSM are seen as a significant plus in a technical project manager's resume. If you hold any such certifications, ensure to prominently feature them. They help validate your abilities in project management and could give you an edge in the competition.
Conversely, flaunt your fluency in programming languages. Even if whipping up code may not form the core of your daily tasks, such knowledge underscores your ability to understand the developer's perspective, easing team coordination efforts.
Technical Project Manager with Software Development specialization Resume Sample
Ideal resume length.
Defining the length of your resume can be crucial in making the right impression. For entry-level or mid-level technical project managers with less than 10 years of relevant experience, aim for a one-page resume. It stays precise and relevant.
Senior candidates can spread their achievements across two pages. Trying to consolidate a rich career into a single page can be challenging. However, if length is an issue, consider a fresh template or remove less important sections.
Entry-level Technical Project Manager Resume Sample
Penetrating the technical project management field.
The role of a technical project manager often involves skillful navigation through software development processes. Highlighting your understanding of software development methodologies such as Agile or Scrum can be a real resume booster. Also, if you've gained practical experience with project management tools like JIRA or Asana, don't forget to mention it.
Display your ability to work cross-functionally with diverse teams, as technical project managers often liaise between tech teams and business stakeholders. Explaining a situation where you were the facilitator bridging this gap can be a unique selling point.
Technical Project Management Consultant Resume Sample
Beat the resume screeners.
When you apply for a job as a technical project manager, your resume might first be read by a computer program called an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). This system looks for keywords and phrases to see if your resume matches the job. To get past the ATS, you need to make sure your resume speaks its language.
Here's how you can do that:
- Use words from the job description. If the job needs someone who can 'manage software development projects,' include that exact phrase.
- Include specific technologies you've worked with, like 'Agile' or 'JIRA.' These terms show you have the technical skills needed.
Remember, an ATS might miss important details if they're not clearly shown in your resume. Make it easy for both the computer and the hiring manager to see you're a good fit for the role.
Technical Project Manager for Software Migration Resume Sample
Customize your resume.
To get a technical project manager job, you need to show you're a good fit. Your resume should talk about specific skills and experiences that match the job. Think about what the job needs and explain how you've done those things before.
- Show your tech skills by listing the software and tools you've used. Write Expert in Agile methodologies and experienced with JIRA and Confluence for project tracking .
- For leadership, mention teams you've led. Use numbers like Managed a team of 10 developers .
- If you're coming from a different job, link your past work to project management. Say Used project scheduling techniques to deliver marketing campaigns on time .
Senior Technical Project Manager in Healthcare IT Resume Sample
Ignoring key skills and metrics.
When you put together your resume as a technical project manager, it is vital that you show the skills that match what the job needs. Do not simply list your past job titles or tasks. You need to focus on what you have achieved. Talk about how you managed budgets, kept to schedules, and the size of the teams you have led.
Make sure to include any special tools, software, or methods you know that are important for these jobs. It is common to see resumes that do not have these details. This can make it hard for you to stand out. If you know how to use tools like JIRA or Agile methods, say so. This tells hiring managers that you have the right skills for the job.

Show achievements, not tasks.
As a hiring manager, I remind you to highlight your successes, not just your daily duties. When drafting your resume for technical project management roles, it's crucial to show how you’ve made an impact, not just the tasks you were responsible for. This gives a clearer picture of your real-world value.
Examples of shifting from responsibilities to accomplishments could include:
- Instead of 'managed project timelines,' you could say 'delivered 3 software projects 10% ahead of schedule, enhancing customer satisfaction and team efficiency.'
- Rather than 'oversaw a team of developers,' try 'led a cross-functional team that reduced system downtime by 20% through strategic workflow improvements.'
These tweaks transform your resume from a list of roles into a testament of your professional contributions which stand out better to employers.
Junior Technical Project Manager in Telecommunications Resume Sample
Essential skills for your resume.
When you're applying for a technical project manager role, certain skills can help your resume stand out. Here's what you should consider including:
- Project management methodologies like Agile or Scrum show you understand the frameworks that guide complex tech projects.
- Risk management abilities are crucial, as you need to foresee and mitigate potential issues.
- Display your proficiency with project management software like JIRA or Trello .
- Include technical skills relevant to your specialization, such as software development , network architecture , or database management .
- Highlight your experience with budgeting and resource allocation to show you can manage project finances effectively.
- Your resume should also reflect your ability to handle quality assurance and testing procedures .
Remember, you don't need every skill listed, just those that match the job you want. Place these skills in a dedicated section, and also weave them into your job descriptions to pass through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). ATS software scans for keywords, so including these skills can help ensure your resume gets seen by a hiring manager.
Focus on the tools and techniques you're proficient with. This shows you can hit the ground running. If you're unsure about a skill, consider if it's essential for the roles you're targeting. Not every technical project manager needs deep knowledge of machine learning , for example, unless the job description asks for it.
Global Technical Project Manager in AI & Machine Learning Resume Sample
Show impact with numbers.
When you write your resume, showing your impact with numbers will help you stand out. Use metrics that are specific to technical projects to highlight your skills and achievements. Here's how you can think about including these:
- Think about the scope of the projects you managed. How big were they? You can use budget size , team size , or project duration as metrics to show the scale of your work.
- Reflect on the success of your projects. Did you finish them on time or ahead of schedule? Include metrics like percent of projects completed on time or time saved compared to project estimates.
- Consider the efficiency improvements you brought to the table. Did your work lead to faster development cycles or reduced downtime? Use metrics such as increase in development speed or reduction in system outages .
- Did your work result in financial savings or increased revenue? Mention cost savings and revenue growth in your projects.
- Think about quality and customer satisfaction. Did your projects reduce the number of bugs or support tickets? Include metrics like bug reduction rate or decrease in customer support issues .
If you're not sure about exact numbers, estimate them based on the information you have. It's better to show an estimated impact rather than no numbers at all. This approach will give hiring managers a clear picture of your abilities and how you can contribute to their projects.

Tips to write an IoT Engineer Resume Summary:
- Functional Summary – This is your opportunity to grab the reader’s attention and to make them wish to learn more about your experience. Review the job posting and speak directly to the most important qualifications that are sought. The summary should not exceed 2-4 sentences, so be concise and make sure that all of the main points you want to cover are there.
- Key Accomplishments – In this section, you will want to go into your previous positions in detail and identify your accomplishments within those roles. Do not merely list job titles as it will not impress the reader. Review the job description and highlight your level of contribution and responsibility, rather than just your role. While you may want to include less relevant positions in a chronological resume, this is the perfect opportunity to give those positions some much-needed attention. Highlight examples that clearly demonstrate how you have achieved results or how you have added value through your efforts.
- Education – List education at the top of any resume, since this is typically considered an asset by many employers.
