I love having fun activities for my kids that don’t require too much prep – and the good news is there are plenty of  free printable activities for 4-year-olds  available online that I’ve used again and again!

These printables cover all kinds of categories and stimulate their brains to learn while they’re having a ton of fun!

Free Printable Activities for 4-year-olds

4-year-olds need a lot to keep them busy. These fun activities help keep them occupied while at the same time provide learning experiences for them. I like to have a folder full of these printables so that I can do something fun with them at any given time.

Some of these activities can even be laminated to use again and again!

5 Easy Activities That 4 Year Olds Can Do Alone While You Work

1. wash the toys..

Grab two large sensory bins or Tupperwares ware containers. Fill one container with water and dish soap. Mix it up to make it bubbly. You don’t need a lot of water to make this fun and engaging just an inch or two will do. Lay a towel underneath everything in order to reduce the mess and clean up afterwards. Fill the other tub with tons of farm animals or dinosaurs or cars. You can set up one thing to wash every week! Let them wash the animals in the soap water. Add towels for drying. You can also add fine motor tools like eye droppers or turkey basters for washing, sponges or scrub brushes. If you’re feeling ambitious you can also place the animals outside the tub and put clean water in the second tub allowing your child to wash and then rinse the animals off before drying them.

Fun Activity using Magnets

2. playing with magnets..

Fill a sensory bin with all the metal object you can find. Think toy trains, cars, coins, paper clips, fridge magnets, bells, magnetic letters, keys. Throw in some other nonmetal items too. Hand your child a magnetic wand and let them explore trying to pick up item. Add cardboard tubes to the sides of the sensory bin using painter’s tape and have them toss metal items down the tubes that will fit and then have them recover the items using the magnetic wand . Make Foil Presents

3. foil puzzle match ..

Tear off sheets of foil to fit the puzzle pieces and have them do the wrapping for you! Model how to wrap with foil, folding over the puzzle pieces rather than scrunching. Place all the pieces in the basket and let the unwrapping begin! Trust me they will want to do this more than once so tear off a bunch and hand them over as they need them.

Fun Activities using LEGO

4. lego animal trace.

One a large sheet of butcher paper draw the outline of a few animals like a turtle, lion or peacock and invite your child to fill in the rest of the animal with LEGO DUPLO.

5. LEGO Body Trace

Similar to LEGO animal trace but instead you trace their bodies and have them fill them in with LEGO DUPLO or magnetic tiles!

Before you decide to homeschool a 4-year-old, the first thing you need to consider is what your child should be learning.

Kids at this age need to work on practicing daily skills that make their lives easier. If they can’t open the toothpaste tube, make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, pour a cup of water, or catch a ball, I suggest including those goals in your plan for the year.

Daily tasks and skills matter as much as the educational part of the goals. Practicing realistic, day-to-day activities and promoting pretend play is a great way for a 4 year old to learn.

At the same time, your child does have academic goals to meet at this age. The goal is to prepare your child for kindergarten while simultaneously creating a love of learning.

I think a love of learning is the most important goal of all because, once your child enjoys learning, everything else flows with it.

Before your homeschool year begins, I suggest writing out a list of academic goals that your child to meet by the end of the school year.

Here are some realistic goals for what a 4-year-old should be learning.

• Identify letters of the alphabet and common sight words
• Identify rhyming words
• Write their name
• Know their birthday and address
• Hold a pencil correctly
• Count to ten
• Classify objects based on shape, size, and quantity
• Know how to use art supplies like paint, scissors, and glue

Don’t Forget the Motor Skills!

Focusing on motor skills, fine and gross, are a vital part of preschool. Gross motor skills come first because development follows a pattern of larger muscles to smaller ones.

For example, painting with a large paintbrush is easier and an earlier skill than using a pencil.

Here are some gross motor skills to practice with your four-year-old.

• Catching a ball
• Throwing a ball
• Walking on a line

Don’t forget the fine motor skills as well!

• Stringing beads
• Buttoning and zipping
• Cutting with scissors
• Rolling Play-Doh

How to Homeschool a 4-Year-Old

It feels intimidating when you start homeschooling for the first time, but let me reassure you, as long as you are working with your child, you’re doing good. A 4-year-old is just starting their education journey.

Let me break down the steps to start homeschooling a four-year-old; it’s much easier than you imagine.

Know Your State Laws

The first thing you need to do is find out the laws of your state around homeschooling. Most states have no requirements for a four-year-old, but it’s smart to be prepared and understand what the state expects from homeschooling families.

Pick Goals for the Year

Prioritize and write down what you want your child to learn this year, and keep in mind what your child needs to know for kindergarten. This is particularly important if you plan to enroll your child in kindergarten in a public or private school in the following year.

Keep these goals written somewhere that gives you easy access to them so that you can mark them off when your child meets the goal.

Consider a Curriculum or Find Resources

A curriculum is not a necessity for a four-year-old, but many first-time homeschooling families feel more comfortable using a designed curriculum instead of picking their own resources.

You’ll find an abundance of choices for preschool curriculums for homeschoolers, but the most important things to include are :

• Resources to help your child learn basic math skills such as counting and identifying pattern
• Plenty of books to read aloud
• Resources to teach your child the alphabet and introduce phonics
• Plenty of art supplies
• An area for play-based learning
• Fun science experiments that introduce your child to the world around him

Set Up an Area for Learning

Don’t feel like you need a homeschool room; most families don’t have an extra room for homeschooling.

Ideally you will use a desk space , even if it’s just in a corner of your dining room. However, don’t feel upset if the couch ends up being your center for learning. If that’s the case, I suggest to still have an area to hold your supplies and books.

Create a Relaxed Schedule

A four-year-old only needs a relaxed homeschool schedule. Lessons should be 10-15 minutes long per subject with plenty of play and art intermingled.

Kids at this age learn best when they’re playing and having a good time, so keep it simple yet enjoyable.

Connect with Your Local Homeschool Community

You might be surprised to learn that most areas have a homeschool community; homeschooling is the fastest-growing education sector in the United States.

Finding a community opens up so many options, and check with local businesses. Many gymnastic and dance schools provide lessons in the daytime specifically for homeschooling families.

Facebook is a great way to find local homeschool communities. Simply search for Homeschool Groups in your area.

How to Pick a Homeschool Curriculum for a 4-Year-Old

If you decide that you want to buy a pre-packaged homeschool curriculum for your preschooler, you want to make sure your investment has everything your child needs.

This time is when your child learns and builds a strong foundation for the rest of his education, along with practicing and gaining gross and fine motor skills.

So much is happening for a little child!

When selecting a homeschool preschool curriculum, here are some considerations.

• The curriciulum should include language arts, math, science, and social studies that will prepare your child for kindergarten.
• All lessons should be simple and concentrate on building basic concepts.
• Play-based is ideal for this age, and children should be exposed to lessons using different learning styles and modalities.
• Each lesson needs to build upon the next, creating a foundation.

6 Tips to Homeschool a 4-Year-Old

I know how exciting it is to starting homeschooling your four-year-old. When you’re ready to get started, here are some of the best tips.

1. Get Outside Daily

Children belong outside, so get your preschooler outside as often as possible. Go on nature walks and explore the world; let him bring home things he finds and learn what they are. Answer questions and observe together.

2. Use Home Living Centers and Experiences

Practicing imaginative play and real life situations is perfect for a 4 year old to start learning through play. Creating household areas like pretend kitchens, nurseries, and markets can help facilitate learning.

After they practice in their pretend areas, like the Melissa and Doug Market , take them to the real store so they can practice their experiences in real life.

3. Read Aloud Daily

Reading aloud to your child is one of the most important things you can do for your child. It helps with speech development and early literacy skills that will benefit your child for the rest of their lives.

Include at least 10-15 minutes of reading aloud daily with your children. The results are amazing!

4. Take Age-Appropriate Field Trips

Preschoolers take in the world around them more so than other age ranges, so take your child places.

While Covid surely makes things more complicated, visit local museums and zoos as often as possible. If you learn about a topic that your child enjoys, find related field trips that will enrich his learning.

5. Visit the Library Regularly

It doesn’t matter if your child reads yet – visiting the library encourages reading literacy. Once your child reaches the age of reading, your child can check out books as often as he likes.

6. Keep Lessons Short

Preschoolers have short attention spans, but that’s okay. When you homeschool, you adjust the lessons to fit the needs of your child.

So, plan short 10-15 minute lessons that have a focused point and plan.

7. Sing Songs and Rhyme

It might seem silly to an adult, but singing songs and rhyming works to help children develop their speaking and listening skills.

Counting songs, like “one, two, buckle my shoe…” are one way to help your child have fun with numbers and learn their order. Find songs that your child thinks are fun and sing them regularly. This also builds their memorization skills.

It’s easier to homeschool a 4-year-old than you might imagine. Remember, your goal is to prepare your child for kindergarten and practice their motor skill development. Don’t stress; you got this!

Cooking with your child is not only fun but it’s an excellent way to begin to talk about maths – counting eggs for a cake recipe, more or fewer toppings for a pizza. What Curriculum Should I Use For My 4 Year Old?

Recently on TheHomeSchoolMom's Facebook page someone asked for recommendations for her soon to be 4-year-old. It took me back to when I had a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old and had recently decided to homeschool.

I. Was. So. Excited.

What curriculum should I use? (I bought KONOS and timeline figures and a gazillion Usborne books.) How should we schedule our days? (I carefully scheduled every moment of our days and then proceeded to never once use the schedule.) I made lesson plans and felt organized and believed that my kids were going to get the best education ever. And honestly, we had great fun with some of the activities - but none of it was better than what we could have done by just living and playing.

So after all these years (my kids are now grown and flown), what curriculum would I suggest for a 4 year old?

The work of a 4-year-old is play . Studies show that play is how children learn. Take this time to engage your child . There will be plenty of time for setting and meeting goals later should you choose to do that ( unschoolers look at goals differently ), but now is the time for play.

🎲 Suggested curriculum

🔎 homeschool supplies, 📘 how to embrace playfulness, 📖 what about reading.

Here is my suggested "curriculum" for a 4-year-old (or 5-year-old or 6-year-old) that will help them develop vital skills, build your relationship with them, and give them the hooks that they need to hang later learning on:

• Read to your child. If she can read, let her also read to you. If your child is interested, extend your reading by cooking a dish that was mentioned in the book, or making a craft like one mentioned. If you are looking for something to guide you in choosing good books, I like the books used in Five in a Row for this age. If your child asks to learn to read, go for it -- but in the absence of a physical issue or developmental problem, know that waiting on reading instruction is not harmful and can even be beneficial .
• Play with LEGO ® bricks. Or Lincoln Logs ® , or Tinkertoys ® . Or K'NEX ® . Or simple wood blocks.
• Go for a walk. Listen to your child and enjoy seeing the world from her perspective.
• Go to the library. If your child can read, help him understand how the books are filed, how to use the card catalog, or have a library scavenger hunt .
• Walk in the woods. This is the perfect age to take an Alphabet Walk and learn ABCs with rocks and trees.
• Visit age-appropriate museums. Don't try this when your child is hungry, tired, or otherwise primed for unhappiness. Here are some tips for improving field trips .
• Go to the zoo. Many zoos and aquariums have annual reciprocal memberships that let you visit as many times as you like and even visit other partner zoos with your membership.
• Go to a park or play in the backyard. Just being outside helps kids achieve a natural balance between our technological world and our natural world.
• Play with maps. Let your child make a map of someplace familiar to her and have fun using just the map to find your way around. Let your child blindfold you and lead you through a maze of chairs and other obstacles that they have set up.
• Play with Play-Doh ® . The benefits of messy play are many, including developing fine motor skills, encouraging creativity, allowing expression of emotions in a safe way, and stimulating language development. Make your own playdough at home if you prefer.
• Play dress up. Both boys and girls enjoy dressing up and playing or putting on their own "theatrical productions". I remember my kids continually improving a large scale production of "The Wizard of Paws" over the years.
• Dance, clap, skip, and move around. A lot. Kids are naturally wiggly and rhythm actually helps language skills .
• Play games. Board games are always fun, and strategy games like Catan Junior can be enjoyed by even young children. Building games like Jenga ® can be enjoyed by all ages (and apparently many species ), and strategy games like Mancala develop motor skills as well as thinking skills.
• Listen to him. Ask him "what if" questions when discussing things of interest. "What do you think would happen if this got really cold? Really hot?" "What do you think a cat would do with this?" "How deep do you think that worm goes into the ground?" Remember - you aren't asking for a right answer, you are just getting him thinking. Instead of correcting answers, encourage further discussion: "Wow, I hadn't thought of it that way! Why do you think so?" Inquiry-based learning stimulates thought processes that lead to learning.

Responses poured in on the Facebook group, from notebooks and #2 pencils to laminators and laser printers.

I love school and office supplies as much as the next person, but my mind went elsewhere.

Here are the “just starting out” school supplies I wouldn’t want to do without for preschool through early elementary:

• Dress-up clothes and accessories
• Birdfeeder and birdseed
• Library card
• Modeling media: Playdoh, modeling beeswax, modeling clay, air dry clay
• Paint and art paper
• A handy bowl of manipulatives: dried pinto beans, buttons, pasta shapes
• Kids’ cookbooks and smoothie recipes
• Twinkle lights and candles
• Devices to stream music and audiobooks we can listen to together
• Magnifying lenses and bug jars
• All the sticks that mark on paper: pastels, crayons, sidewalk chalk, block crayons, markers, color pencils, gel pens, feather quills
• All the paper: loose, spiral bound, journal; lined, unlined; colored, black, white; large, small, fancy and scrap
• Cozy couch to snuggle and read
• Bookbasket (beside the couch)
• Comfortable shoes for everyone
• First aid kit
• Balls: tennis, football, soccer, softball, kickball, beach ball

After twenty years of homeschooling, I can safely say that would get me through a few grades. What “less common” school supplies would you recommend to new homeschoolers? Make a list and post it on your homeschool group on social media. Save the children from a monolithic avalanche of #2 pencils!

Hello! My daughtersare 7, 5, and 4! I’m going to be homeschooling soon. What do i need to start? My 7 year old struggles with being on such an early schedule and spending 8 hours in school. It is a lot for her. Please help! Thank you!

My son and daughter just turned 4 & 5. They will be joining the rest of the group this year. We spend a lot of time learning through play now. I appreciate the information given. It will be beneficial to the start of our year since they will be the first that I homeschool from the beginning. We will have to stock up on more dress up clothes and magnifying glasses are a great idea for outside play. Thank you for your insight and for giving me a guide to get us ready to start the year.

I appreciate this information so much up front. I have been leaning towards homeschooling our children my whole adult life... and these school shootings are just setting it in stone.i stayed home with my 4 year old for the first 2 years of her life, then had to go back to work full tme after my 2 year old was born. And honestly I can tell the difference. Even though i hate to comprae them and kniw every child developsand learns differently. That and my eldest misses the cutoff for enrollment by 2 days and is crazy smart. I don't want to hold her back. This is a great tool for me to get started, thank you!

I’m super emotional (well extra lol) reading this article. My daughter lately hasn’t been enjoying school and she’s counting the days until she doesn’t have to go and we’re half way through the school year and she’s only 5! She struggles with time management (she gets it from her mama) and she’s becoming anxious and she’s tired all the time. She has difficulty with staying focused and I can only imagine that being in school from 8:45am-3:30pm is just so exhausting for her. Honestly, I don't think "time management" should be a thing for five year olds! That is an executive function skill that is both developmental and individual. However, schools do often aim kids toward early acquisition of these kinds of skills. I can understand a child developing anxiety as a resulting consequence.

You can homeschool without pushing kids in a way that makes them exhausted and anxious.

That will get you started just thinking about the tangible things you might assume have to be part of education—that really do not!

Hey. I love this and agree, BUT my daughter insisted on "doing real learning" or "real school" like her friends and cousins. So when she was almost 5, I let her do just a phonics program and a picture card based Spanish curriculum, about 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week. This made her feel like we were doing real school, but we did it at her pace, and spent much more time on the playing and exploring. She finished the first semester and I went ahead and introduced some basic math and stopped the Spanish flash cards and replaced our nightly books with Spanish alternatives. So just two topics for a few minutes 3 days a week. I share this because I think some kids want the highly structured learning, and there are ways we can introduce it slowly. However, I would have waited until she was 6 or 7 if it was up to me.

Hi Rachael - I totally understand! As I mentioned in the post, there are certainly children who are ready and interested in going further—one of my own was ready and loved the structure early on. My ideas here are aimed at the new and excited homeschool mom whose oldest is four (or five or even three) and who wants to implement a full-on curriculum. It's so easy to let homeschooling enthusiasm take over and buy a bunch of curriculum simply because it's what new homeschoolers think they are supposed to do. I've been there and done that!

Thank you for the wisdom! With Corona going on and my daughter being home I was googling 4 year old lesson plan and this came up and it got me back on track. I especially liked your "Update" and can testify based on my annecdotal experience it is true. I myself was behind in reading due to diagnosed dyslexia all the way until I learned to love reading in the 5th grade. But since then I've been an avid reader.

I love your blog already. We are a homeschooling family of seven children. I’ve been homeschooling for years now. There’s so much available sometimes I have some problems finding something that actually does works with my family. Homeschooling is all about experimentation and flexibility. It is also particularly about being able to think outside of the box. That’s another important skill for everyone. I love having control over levels of homework as well. Too often schools are missing the point of education. They are solely concentrating on test results and numbers not paying attention to the children.

Thank you for writing this. I feel like you were talking specifically to me. We have decided to homeschool our almost 5 yr old but after much research, I felt extremely discouraged that I was failing as a parent because she doesn't know a lot of the things taught at a preschool level, but it's good to know that I dont totally suck as a mom because we play all day.

Since most homeschool moms went to public school ourselves, it's easy to get stuck in the school mindset of curriculum and structured activities as the norm. I'm sure your child is learning lots through your play together!

This is exactly what I needed. My oldest of 3, just turned 4. I have lots of friends with kids in preschool, and I just have been feeling bad that with my goal of homeschooling I haven't implemented a classroom-like room and schedule. I do most of the things on your list, and it makes me feel like I'm not being lazy, but giving him what he needs. I make a sincere effort to make sure he gets his social interactions in, but I try to let him ask the questions and discover things as I expose him and his siblings to new things. Whew. Thank you.

It sounds like you are doing all the right things, Crystian! Classrooms were designed for teachers with large student to teacher ratios and duplicating that environment at home would mean losing out on some of the benefits of homeschooling. Homeschoolers don't have those ratio restrictions and can give one on one attention focused on the way a child best learns. Best wishes to you and your children!

Lovely post. I plan on homeschooling our two children. We do not agree with all this formal assessment and unnecessary stress and testing as well. This way I can evaluate my two as much as I can and encourage them to enjoy learning too. American schools these days worry too much about standardised testing and inappropriate assessments instead of bad behaviour. Too much paperwork.

I like to make the point that standards and tests are what takes THE PLACE of spending time with individual children and understanding what they are ready to learn and what they already know. And yes, this can end up with an emphasis on bureaucracy and paperwork rather than the little humans who are learning.

Dear May Ann, I just came across your article "What curriculum should I use for my 4 year old, and read your article and the responses. It always amazes me, what pressure/expectation is put on children from early ages on. No wonder there is a saying "Youth is Wasted on the Young". I home schooled my 3 sons up to High School and completely agree with your article. I grew up in Europe, started Kindergarten at age 6, First Grade at age 7. In Kindergarten we played, didn't have to learn to read. Learning to read and math started in First Grade. In Grade 9, in comparison with today's curriculum, I was on 12th Grade level. During my home school time, I did a lot of research of schools and curriculum and was always amazed, how far behind they were, in comparison with the one to I had. Especially in math. What I learned in Second Grade math, in most curriculum today, is taught in 3rd and 4th Grade. No wonder, that average students are at least 2 years behind, when they reach High School. What really confuses me, is, how can students be so far behind, even tough they start so much earlier, in Pre-K and K, with learning and being taught.

Hi Marlene - Thanks for your comment. I'm not sure that students are generally behind (that has not been my experience but I can only speak for myself - my own kids were much further along in each grade than I was 30 years ago), but I think generally the less pressure put on children in the early years, the better the outcome. The larger problems that I see are the constant pressure to teach to tests and the way that teachers in schools are no longer able to ignite curiosity in their students. I am far less concerned about when a child learns something than I am about how well they are able to learn it and whether the methods used have a detrimental effect on their desire to learn.

I love your recommendations to keep things fun and enjoyable and relaxes, but just want to add that all of my younger kids WANTED their own workbooks, because my older kids all spent the morning around the table, 'doing school', and my littles wanted to be included in what the rest of us are doing. Little people enjoy being with mommy, doing what she's doing, even when she's weeding the garden (learn some Botany) or cooking or sewing or 'doing school' and they are such little sponges that it really is to their benefit to allow them to tag along and participate. LIFE can be a valuable part of the curriculum.

Absolutely! As I mentioned to Micki above, each mom knows their child, and if your children are asking for worksheets and wanting to read and wanting to do math, then go for it! I don’t ever want to come across as hindering child-led instruction. What I do want to do is help new homeschool moms to prevent burnout and kill the love of learning.

OK, how about when you have two children less than 2 years apart and the 4 year old WANTS to do schoolwork?

I get this judgmental attitude from people (not saying this post is, just that I have) who act like I am being ridiculous to have my 4 year old write in a journal and do guided reading with me, but she wants to do everything her big sister is doing. They are best friends and share everything.

Her big sister taught her to read. Her big sister taught her to add and subtract. Her big sister is her role model. If she is doing a math worksheet, by all means, little sister is going to, too. And you know what? She is good at it! She might even be better at Math than my older child. I think that is great!

They both get plenty of play time and we do lots of hands on learning, but we also do daily math and reading.

Unfortunately, it really hurts when homeschool moms, who are the only people who get this journey I'm on, post memes on Facebook that say things like "Every time someone asks me what curriculum to use for a 4 year old, I want to hit them in the face with a shovel." And I get told not to be "that mom" who is pushing my kid too hard.

I don't push her at all. In fact, it would save me a huge amount of work if I didn't have to sit through a prek and first grader reading to me each day and check math velcro activities for both kids!

I just feel like kids are unique. Situations are different.

While the home school community is really supportive if your kids are a little "behind" public school norms, I feel it could do a better job at supporting families of kids who are a bit ahead of those same norms.

If it's all about indiviuality, can't we just focus on our own kids and their desire?

And I apologize if this comment comes off as accusatory or grouchy. I don't mean it that way. I sincerely am just looking for... I don't know. I guess I want to share my situation so other moms don't feel like they are some sort of achievement focused momzilla just because they let their preschooler jump into schoolwork rather than making them enjoy their last "free" years as a carefree innocent. 🙂

I didn't feel like you were making those accusations at all. I just have seen it shared on social media a couple of times now as proof of that viewpoint, so I felt it needed to be said here. I have an eight year old and a five year old. We've been homeschooling for three years now, and I for the most part agree. I found some fun, age appropriate things for my five year old son this year, but really apart from using the star fall app on his tablet, we just free flow through things. He's doing great, and I'm not in the least bit worried about where he should be. He's actually ahead in writing skills from where my daughter was coming out of public pre K. When they're that young, it's fun to just let them learn through play. It's surprising how much they actually do learn that way.

Great 'curriculum'! I love the freedom of homeschooling - the ability to be able to do all these creative projects and delight-driven learning. Do you have a curriculum for a one year old?

hi all, thanks for this I'm about to pull my 4 year old out of school, and all is going through my head is what if and I have to teach him to write spell, read and some where teach him the language that is spoken here that I have no idea how it is lol but ill have to get someone to help lol. but wanted to do it all through play as that's how they learn, I also have a just turned 2 year old so will be doing them together, but by reading this I don't have to stress as they can do it at there own pace and through play, just got to work out what to do as I live so rural with not much around x

Thank you for this!! I am in this boat right now! My daughter will be 4 in a few weeks and I have the overwhelming feeling I need to start school with her. She knows her alphabet (lower & upper) by sight, knows the sounds they make and can write them as well, can count 30+ with minimal help, knows her colors & shapes, knows how to spell and write her first & last name. After watching a math leapfrog movie she now knows that 4+2 is 6 etc. I feel like I should be doing more and was thinking of starting to focus more on her learning how to read. I just need to sit back and let her be a kid!!

In homeschooling, they can choose to work through their curriculum as quickly or slowly as they feel comfortable doing, establishing their own pace. A child who struggle in one or more areas academically should consider homeschooling as an excellent one-to-one environment to learn the skills necessary to catch up.

20 Activities for 4 Year Olds to Do at Home

As a mom of several little ones close in age, I can appreciate how helpful it can be to have activities for 4 year olds available for when you just need ideas to keep them entertained.

I’m a BIG fan of outdoor play and LOTS of it, but there are times when the weather just doesn’t allow for that and other reasons to be shut in.

For those times, these activities listed below are what we turn to.

The beauty of this age is that play is the very best way for them to learn . There’s no need to have structured learning but these games and activities will certainly encourage learning in a really fun way.

Activities for 4 Year Olds to Keep Them Entertained

I’ve never been a “glitter mom” that has these incredibly fun and creative activities set up for her kids.

I like to keep things simple and affordable, so you won’t find anything time-consuming or expensive listed here.

These activities are all either free or cheap to put together.

#1 Coloring

Not all kids love to color in, but I’ve found that if you allow them to color however they want with no expectations, they do start to enjoy it.

You can grab some free alphabet coloring pages by signing up below.

Otherwise, coloring books and coloring supplies are very affordable and are well worth having on hand.

I always go for washable markers and crayons so I don’t have to stress about having to watch their every move.

#2 Playing Doctors

I love this because your child can either play this with you, with their siblings or just using a soft toy.

In fact, this was one of my go-to activities when I was pregnant because I could lie down and “rest” while my son played the game.

You don’t have to have a doctor kit , but they are cheap enough to find and your child will love using it.

I’m a nurse, so we often have great conversations about the human body when my kids play doctor.

#3 Read Books

You can never read to your child too much. Seriously.

It is SO good for them.

I’ve linked some of my favorite books below, but also don’t be afraid to read chapter books as well. My son is a big fan of the Little House on the Prarie series .

If you find that they just don’t want to sit still then letting them color or play with Duplo while you read is a great option.

Another thing to consider is looking into audiobooks. This is a great way to encourage some quiet time so everyone can have a break.

#4 Play Board Games

Connect Four , Roll and Play , Trouble , and Go Fish are all great games to play with a four-year-old.

We also enjoy Snakes and Ladders and Buckaroo .

#5 Play with Playdoh or Kinetic Sand

I personally find Playdoh a lot easier to tidy up, but both kinetic sand and playdoh are great options for open-ended play.

You can leave your child to play with these on their own, or you can get some playdoh mats and encourage letter recognition.

You’ll need to buy kinetic sand but you can easily make your own playdoh at home and just use kitchen items for moulding tools.

#6 Paint with Water

If you have any kind of outdoor space then this is a super easy activity to set up.

Give your child a bowl of water and a paintbrush and let them have fun “painting” anything they’d like.

Both my 4-year old and 2-year old love this activity and it keeps them entertained for a really long time.

#7 Dance Party

Being cooped up inside can lead to kids bouncing off the walls…which can drive you crazy (especially when you live in a smaller home).

One way that I’ve found to help get their wiggles out is by allowing a dance party.

I put on some fun kids music and let them dance to their heart’s content.

Sometimes I join in…other times I take the opportunity to get a minute’s peace a quiet.

#8 Play Dress Ups

If you have some costumes then this is a great time to bring them out and let your 4-year old play dress ups.

Otherwise, you could be creative and make costumes from what you already have at home.

A towel can be a superhero cape, and little girls will love dressing up in your clothes.

Things don’t have to be fancy in order to be fun and spark the imagination.

#9 Hide n’ Seek

My son is terrible at this game but it is so much fun.

And when I say terrible what I mean is that when he hides he can’t stop himself from giggling…so everyone always knows where he is.

Regardless, it’s such an easy game to play with your 4-year-old and you can extend the fun to siblings too.

#10 Water Play

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that bring the most joy.

There have been many evenings when I’ve been trying to get dinner put together and all three children have been whining at my feet.

On those days I grab a big towel and put a bunch of plastic containers on it with some water in each.

I give my kids spoons and they go to town transferring water from one container to the next.

So simple and yet it’s a great activity!

#11 Build a Fort

Who else has great memories of fort-building as a kid?

It doesn’t take much more than propping some sheets or blankets over furniture to make a great fort that your 4-year old will love to play in.

#12 Watch a Movie

Screen time isn’t something that many people recommend but sometimes it has its place.

Disney + is our favorite place to find fun family movies to enjoy together.

It’s even more fun when you watch it from a fort that you’ve built together in the living room.

Add some fun snacks and you’re set up for making some great family memories.

Most 4-year olds love to help in the kitchen. Baking is a great activity idea and you’ll be getting two benefits out of it.

First, your 4-year old will have a fun activity to do with you, and second, they’ll have a snack to have later on.

#14 Play with Duplo or Legos

Lego and Duplo are two things that we can personally never have enough of in our home.

The open-ended nature of them is ideal for preschoolers.

I love them for quiet time in the afternoon or for when I’m reading aloud to my children.

Magnatiles are also a great thing to stock up on. We use all three in our home.

#15 Wipe Clean Books

Not all 4-year olds will love to sit and work on a book but for those that do, wipe-clean books are a perfect idea.

Alternatively, if you have a laminator , you can print off coloring pages and laminate them so your child can use washable markers on them and you can just wipe them clean.

#16 Scavenger Hunt

We’ve done many kinds of scavenger hunts in our home but this is an activity that you can easily turn into an educational one if you’d like.

If you have flashcards of any kind, you can hide them around the place and have your child look for them.

This works great for letter, number, shape, and color recognition.

Otherwise, just using household items is a fun way to play as well.

#17 Puzzles

Another quiet activity that your 4-year old can either do individually or with someone else is working on a puzzle.

Wooden puzzles are my favorite as the pieces are less likely to be damaged.

While chores don’t sound like a fun activity idea , they are actually great for 4-year olds.

They’ll learn responsibility and diligence.

Plus, most 4-year olds are very eager to be just like mom or dad, so you’ll find that they’re excited to help.

#19 Tea Party

If you did some baking earlier in the day, why not host a tea party later on?

Otherwise, if your child has a tea set , give them some water to use in the cups and let them have some fun with their imagination.

#20 Simon Says

When my kids are needing a way to calm down (and stop driving me crazy) Simon Says is something that works to bring everyone together.

My 4-year old loves this game and I often use it as an opportunity to teach him more about his body and what the different names of things are.

This list of activities is meant to help you and not put any pressure on.

I’m a firm believer in that my job is not to entertain my children. Its good for them to feel bored sometimes because that’s what encourages the use of imagination.

With that said, there are times when I need to step in and direct them a bit which is when these activity ideas come in handy.

Parenting a 4-year-old can be a wonderful, exciting experience. Yes, your child may still be a handful at times (this is common!), but they are growing in leaps and bounds. Four-year-olds are creative , thoughtful little people. Get ready for the stage when imaginative play is all the rage, and you can begin to have fuller, fascinating conversations with your kiddo. Your 4-year-old’s fine motor skills are becoming more refined by the day and they’ll soon be expert climbers, jumpers, and runners.

Learn more about what to expect when it comes to 4-year-old growth and development , and what warning signs might warrant a call to your pediatrician.

4-Year-Old Language and Cognitive Milestones

Your preschooler is turning into quite the chatterbox at this age. By 4 years old, your child should be able to speak in complete sentences, answer simple questions, and have back-and-forth conversations, says Eric Ball, MD , a pediatrician at Providence Mission Hospital in Orange County, California. “Almost all of what they say should be intelligible to a stranger,” Dr. Ball advises.

Additionally, your child should be able to follow multi-step commands with three or more steps, says Dr. Ball. For example, after being given instructions, your 4-year-old should be able to pick up a toy from the floor, put it away in a toy basket, and then come back to sit on your lap to read a book.

Your child’s cognitive skills are developing quickly at this age too, says Brittany Ferri , PhD, OTR/L, CPRP, an occupational therapist. “Kids at this age should be able to count, identify colors, shapes, numbers, and letters, as well as use pronouns appropriately,” she says. They should also be able to draw a person with at least three body parts.

At 4 years old, children are inquisitive and love to digest new information. You’ll be amazed at how much your child can comprehend. If you tell or read them a story, they should be able to recall large parts of it. Not only that, but 4-year-olds are great at making up their own stories. Their imaginations are really taking off at this age.

"Four-year-olds can understand most of what is going on in the world,” says Dr. Ball. “They are learning the difference between 'real' and 'pretend' and they often are developing vivid imaginations (think fairy tales and monsters).”

Language and Cognitive Checklist

• Your child is starting to be able to grasp how time works.
• They should know how to say their first and last name.
• Most 4-year-olds can memorize and recite some words or phrases from children’s songs and poems.
• Children this age can make predictions about what will happen next in a story or book.
• Your child should speak in simple sentences of about five words and know about 1000 to 2000 words.

4-Year-Old Movement, Hand, and Finger Milestones

Your 4-year-old isn’t just getting taller, but their fine and gross motor skills are getting more mature as well. By now, you should be able to play basic outside games with your child, like catch and kickball. Art projects and board games will be favorite activities.

In terms of physical growth, 4-year-olds weigh an average of 40 pounds and are about 40 inches tall. They are twice as tall as they were when they were born! Your child is gaining weight at the rate of about a quarter of an ounce per day. All this growth requires healthy eating habits and good sleep: you can expect your child to still need about 11 to 13 hours of sleep each night.

Your child is becoming stronger and more agile each day. “Children at this age can run and jump well, can often balance on one foot and walk backward,” says Dr. Ball. Many kids this age are starting to ride bikes or scooters, Dr. Ball says. If you take your child out to play ball, they should be able to throw the ball overhead and kick a ball around with you, he adds.

You’ll be wowed by your child’s emerging fine motor skills as well. “Kids at this age can use scissors, manage a writing utensil mostly independently, and use eating utensils,” Ferri says.

Your child will also be able to play cards, child-friendly board games, and may start to be able to put together a puzzle. Your 4-year-old may become a budding artist as well: they might be able to draw simple pictures and start to be able to form letters.

Physical Milestone Checklist

• Your child should be able to skip, climb, and jump.
• They may be able to do a somersault and to stand on one foot for 10 or more seconds.
• Most 4-year-olds are able to get dressed and undressed without help and are learning how to brush their teeth.
• Your child is learning how to pour without too much spilling and can mash food.
• They are likely potty trained, but may still wet the bed.

4-Year-Old Emotional and Social Milestones

Four-year-olds are starting to have more opinions and beliefs, and they are starting to be more in touch with the world around them. Although 4-year-olds may seem much more mature than they were just a few months ago, they may still be moody and prone to meltdowns.

“It is still normal at this age for children to have some difficulty regulating their emotions, and temper tantrums are still relatively common,” says Dr. Ball. He says kids this age thrive on routine, and that setting a predictable daily structure can help them stay grounded.

Socially, 4-year-olds are learning a lot about making friends. They will start to be able to form real bonds with their peers, and are getting better at cooperating and being mindful of the emotions of others. These are skills that will carry over well as they begin school.

Kids this age will likely have a few imaginary friends, too. Their imaginations are growing exponentially at this age, and the much of their play is extremely creative. “They should be doing a lot of pretend play at this age, working off their imaginations,” says Dr. Ball.

Social and Emotional Checklist

• At 4, your child will likely comfort others who are hurt or sad.
• They are learning to avoid danger and will take fewer risks.
• They like to be helpful.
• They are able to change their behavior based on where they are (such as a library or a playground).

Other Milestones for Your 4-Year-Old

At this age, your child will become more aware of their sexuality. This can catch parents off-guard, but it’s completely normal.

Keep in mind that you will be more uncomfortable talking about sex than your 4-year-old is. Try to use matter-of-fact language. Use the correct terms for genitals ("penis" and "vagina") rather than euphemisms. You may notice your child exploring their body at this age. It’s important not to shame them, although you can teach them not to touch themselves in public.

How to Help Your 4-Year-Old Learn and Grow

As the parent of a 4-year-old, you may have questions about what your role is in terms of helping your child develop properly, providing age-appropriate discipline and boundaries, and ensuring that your child stays safe.

There are many things you can do to help your child blossom and grow. Engaging in conversation with them whenever possible, reading to them, and supporting their interests are simple steps you can take. This is the age when your child will have a million questions. Answering their questions, and supplementing their queries with educational materials (books, appropriate media, activities) is a great idea, too.

You will want to create a structure for your child at this age and enforce positive discipline techniques . Four-year-olds are able to understand rules and social customs, but remember that they are still learning, so it’s normal if they need guidance along the way.

You can start teaching your child to do basic chores, such as setting and clearing the table. It can be helpful to have routines around your day-to-day life so that your child knows what to expect. This helps your child regulate their emotions as well. At this age, you will want to enforce screen time rules and ensure that your child gets plenty of physical activity.

How to Keep Your 4-Year-Old Safe

Your 4-year-old will seem much more independent and able than they used to, but they are still just a little kid and will need adult supervision and guidance for most of their activities. You can give your child guidance about things like the safe use of scissors, and how to perform activities like catch or kickball without hurting themselves or others.

Soon after your child turns 4, they will have a well-child visit at the doctor. Kids between the ages of 4 and 6 will get several immunizations, which may include the DTaP vaccine, the MMR vaccine, the IPV vaccine (polio), and the varicella vaccine. Your child may also be offered a flu shot.

Your pediatrician will discuss your child’s growth and development , and go over important safety tips such as wearing a helmet while riding a bike, using a harnessed car seat, using sunscreen, and the importance of supervising your child diligently near water and streets.

When to Be Concerned About Your 4-Year-Old

All children grow at their own pace and in their own way, but there are certain signs that your child may be experiencing a developmental delay.

“I worry at this age if children are not playing cooperatively or have a hard time interacting with their peers or other children,” says Dr. Ball. “I am concerned when children's speech at this age is unintelligible or if they have a hard time following directions or understanding commands.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists some “red flags” when it comes to growth and development. In terms of motor skills, if your child can’t jump or has trouble writing or scribbling, you should bring this up with your pediatrician. Other concerns include children who can’t dress themselves at all, aren’t able to use a potty, or are not able to answer simple questions.

Lacking social skills that may prompt a call to your pediatrician include not being interested in pretend play or playing with others, and not socializing with people outside of the immediate family. If you or others can’t understand your child when they speak, if they aren’t using pronouns correctly, or if they don’t seem able to recall stories that were told to them, reach out to your pediatrician.

Finally, if your child’s skills have regressed in some way, the CDC advises that this is a warning sign that something may be wrong.

A Word From Verywell

Some will tell you that after you leave the toddler years, you will have a much more easygoing and cooperative child. While it’s true that 4-year-olds are usually more reasonable than 2- or 3-year-olds, they are still young children, and can be difficult to parent at times. In certain ways, they are even more willful than when they were younger, and their verbal skills make them more able to argue about even the littlest thing.

So if you are finding parenting your 4-year-old challenging, you are far from alone. Thankfully, there is usually enough joy and wonder at this age to outweigh the hard stuff. But you should know that you’ve done nothing wrong as a parent if you still have tough days with your 4-year-old every now and then.

Activities for a 4-year-old: Fostering your child’s development

A t age 4, your little one’s best method of learning is through play, which is why no matter if you’re focused on teaching them letters and numbers, social-emotional skills, a love of nature or just trying to keep them busy, having a few go-to learning and sensory activities for 4-year-olds can be especially useful. Your energetic kiddo loves learning new things, and we’ve got 10 hands-on activities to keep them engaged.

Sensory activities for 4-year-olds

1. alphabet moon rocks.

Using aluminum foil, wrap up a set of magnetic or foam alphabet letters individually as “moon rocks” for your child to uncover. Set them all in a large plastic tub you can transform into a space-themed sensory bin complete with dried black beans, any space vehicles or astronaut play figures you might have on hand. Can they travel through the galaxy to find all 26 moon rocks? 

2. Wash ‘n’ dry

If your kiddo loves helping you clean, scrubbing down their toys is a great way for them to get their hands wet while feeling like they’re contributing. Set up a couple plastic bins or large soup pots and fill one with soapy water and the second with plain water for rinsing. It’s fun to do this activity each week with a different category of toys: this week, farm animals, next week, toy cars. 

3. Collage creation

Gather a variety of textured materials like fabric scraps, yarn, tissue paper, and buttons. Encourage your child to create a collage by gluing the materials onto a large piece of paper, allowing them to explore different textures and patterns.

Developmental activities for 4-year-olds

1. Puppet play

Whether it’s behind the couch or the shower curtain, create a mock stage for your budding Shakespeare to put on their own play. Ask them to act out a story with their stuffed animals or puppets, and be a very enthusiastic audience member. This activity promotes storytelling abilities, creativity, and social-emotional development.

2. Hopscotch

Hopscotch, the classic sidewalk game, is a surprising winner when it comes to developmental activities for 4-year-olds. It promotes gross motor skills as children hop, jump, and balance on one foot while moving through the hopscotch grid, and it encourages cognitive skills such as number recognition and counting. Kids learn to identify and call out the numbers as they progress through the numbered squares. This activity also introduces basic concepts of sequencing and order as they navigate the correct path. If played with a friend or sibling, it also promotes turn-taking. 

3. Cardboard laptop

Is your kiddo always angling to type on your laptop keyboard? Help them craft their own cardboard version. Fold a piece of cardboard in half like a book. Using a piece of printer paper or construction paper, help them draw their ideal laptop screen, followed by a second piece of paper for the keyboard (ask them to help fill in the letters!). Glue each piece to the respective sides of the cardboard laptop, and then let them happily type away—without the risk of them accidentally sending an email to your boss.

Things to do with a 4-year-old

Week 1: play a board game.

Unearth the board games from your youth (Chutes & Ladders, anyone)? And invite your preschooler to play. Introducing board games at an early age can help develop critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills. Board games are also a good way to invite a little friendly competition and support family bonding. 

Week 2: Paint party

Washable kids’ paint is a great way to liven up some plastic outdoor furniture and while away a warm spring or summer afternoon. Offer your kids a few paint colors and a brush, and then let them paint their plastic outdoor toys like chairs, slides and mini cars. It washes right off with the hose or a good rain shower!

Week 3: Craft a nature collection

Set out on a nature walk (no matter the weather) to see what treasures you and your 4-year-old can find. Then, display your souvenirs in a prominent place on a window sill or mantle to encourage not only a love of the natural world but also that you cherish their treasures right along with them.

Week 4: Sprinkle letter tracing

Create a sensory bag that’s perfect for letter writing with fingers by filling a large gallon-size resealable bag with sprinkles. With the bag closed, tape the bag flat onto a table and spread the sprinkles evenly throughout. Then, model using your finger to draw the letters of the alphabet, your child’s name or numbers. Then, ask them to do the same.
