Most of what you know about the Apple Watch Ultra can be said for the Apple Watch Ultra 2. It’s still Apple’s biggest and longest-lasting smartwatch targeting outdoor sports enthusiasts with a rugged design and more advanced GPS technology than the flagship Apple Watch Series 9 .

That's to say there aren't very many upgrades between the Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch Ultra 2, and certainly not enough to make someone who has the original switch to the new one. Despite the Ultra's brighter display, new complication-packed watch face, and the introduction of a performance-boosting chip, it doesn’t deliver the quintessential smartwatch experience. Instead, the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra exists to target holdouts. But it’s not like that’s a bad thing. 

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 has plenty to offer for those sporty iOS users with $799 to spend. In addition to the processor's enhancements, it gets a smarter ultra-wideband chip and proudly transitions from virgin titanium to a 95% recycled titanium frame. Like the Apple Watch Series 9, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is among Apple's debut offerings of carbon neutral-certified devices, too.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 price and availability

You can preorder the Apple Watch Ultra 2 now, with full availability starting September 22. Our guide to  Apple Watch 9 preorders  guide gives relevant advice for getting the Apple Watch Ultra 2 as early as possible.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 maintains the same $799, which is double the starting price of the Appel Watch Series 9 ($399). I'll admit, I was worried the titanium-induced price hike for the iPhone 15 Pro could hit the Apple Watch Ultra. But for $799 you get your choice of Ultra-specific band, a braided charging cable and Cellular support.

There’s no telling the Apple Watch Ultra 2 vs. Apple Watch Ultra apart at a glance. The device maintains the same general design, featuring a flat 49mm display, protruding right-side button array, and orange action button on the left side. It doesn't so much as come in an alternative color. It’s a one-size-fits-all approach that may continue to deter those with smaller wrists. The fit is an adjustment compared to the regular 45mm Apple Watch, but I happen to love the bold fit and big screen.

The screen is brighter than before, up to 3,000 nits from 2,000 nits. In direct sunlight the improvement is subtle, but I could see it more clearly than the Apple Watch Series 9. This might matter if you spend a lot of time in bright conditions for outdoor adventures, otherwise I’d consider it a small upgrade. 

Perhaps the more consequential design change is that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is made of 95% recycled aluminum, a major improvement from the virgin material used in the first-gen model. Apple has made a serious commitment to making all its devices carbon-neutral by 2030, with the 2023 Apple Watch family taking a major step in that direction. With the re-sourced Trail Loop and Alpine Loop, two of the best Apple Watch bands , the Apple Watch Ultra earns the carbon neutral certificate. I imagine there’s a high crossover of eco-conscious customers and outdoor sports enthusiasts who might be interested in Apple’s rugged watch, so the switch is an all-round smart move. 

Apple Watch Ultra 2 review: Performance

Performance-wise, the Apple Watch Series 9 vs. Apple Watch Ultra 2 have a lot in common. It packs the S9 processor, which promises the first true power upgrade since the Apple Watch Series 6. Apple claims it's 25% more efficient, built on 5.6 billion transistors with 30% faster GPU animations and 4-core neural engines that enable machine learning twice as fast. 

Not only does the processor make a 3,000-nit display possible without sacrificing battery life, it also improves the Siri experience. Siri computing now takes place all on-device, resulting in faster responses as well as some offline functionality. Say you don’t have Cellular enabled on your smartwatch, but want to leave your phone at home for a run — on the first Apple Watch Ultra, you couldn’t use Siri to launch the run workout with your voice. With the Apple Watch Ultra 2, now you can.

Last perk of the new processor? The algorithm that powers the double-tap gesture . I talk about double tap more in my Apple Watch Series 9 review , but the experience should be similar on the Apple Watch Ultra 2 when the feature rolls out in October. So, if you're hanging off a cliff (which is something I imagine some Apple Watch Ultra users do for fun) you could theoretically answer calls and open apps by tapping your index finger and thumb of your watch hand together. Users can conveniently double-tap to scroll through the Smart Stack, control music playback, use the camera remote app and more, too.  

And if you’ve misplaced your phone, the upgraded ultra-wideband (UWB) chip in the Apple Watch Ultra 2 can give you directions to its location. I use the ping feature to find my iPhone on a daily basis, so the visual cues are absolutely useful. Unfortunately, this only works for those with an iPhone 15 .

Apple Watch Ultra 2 review: Outdoor and safety features

Although I know for a fact that Apple Watch Ultra has been adopted by all sorts of users, the device at its core is a sports watch. In many ways, it's one of the best running watches with a Precision Start feature, action button that can pause workouts, and dual-frequency GPS that has proven as accurate as Garmin watches in our testing. All of the best Apple Watch running features suit the Apple Watch Ultra 2 as well. 

I used Apple Watch Ultra 2 testing as an opportunity to try some of the biking features released in watchOS 10 . Now, you can connect your Apple Watch to a Bluetooth-connected power meter, speed sensor, or cadence sensor to see your cycling power and your Functional Threshold Power (FTP) score. What’s more, your phone can mirror your workout metrics. I attached my iPhone to a bike mount and successfully followed along with my ride data from my Apple Watch Ultra 2, but on an easier-to-read screen. 

The built-in Depth app gets an upgrade, too. Now it'll save a log of each dive so users can take a look back at their most recent sessions on their Apple Watch Ultra 2, or check out the complete history of all their dives in the Fitness app on iPhone.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 has the same compass app with track-back features, but now it displays current elevation in real time and display waypoints in a 3D view based on relative elevation. For hiking workouts, there’s a more detailed topographic map that flags points of interest. Nearby trail information appears upon starting a hike, providing insights on the trail length, type, and difficulty. 

In terms of safety, the compass app will also detect two new waypoints: your Last Cellular Connection (or last reception location) and Last Emergency Call Waypoint, which will lead you to a place where an emergency call can be made on a carrier network. If you need help more immediately, the Siren app rings an 86-decibel alarm that can be heard up to 180 meters away. In my opinion, this is a reassuring feature to have no matter if you're traversing the wilderness as it is in a city late at night. As a result, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the best Apple Watch from a personal safety perspective.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: watchOS 10

In addition to the new sports features, watchOS 10 welcomes a slew of fresh Apple Watch features. Smart Stack is the most prominent update, changing the way you navigate your Apple Watch. Going forward, you’ll rotate the digital crown to open the Smart Stack and see a carousel of relevant information tiles. 

There’s some added health features, too. watchOS 10 grows the functionality of the Mindfulness app with prompts asking users to log momentary emotions and daily moods. The ambient light sensor in certain Apple Watch models will also be able to measure how much time you spend outside to help inform vision health. 

watchOS 10 offers three new watch faces for Apple Watch Ultra 2. Not only does it get the Palette and Snoopy faces available to all Apple Watch users, but it gets a special watch face called Modular Ultra. It’s among the most complication-rich Apple Watch faces, taking advantage of the large display by pushing a seconds count, depth gauge or elevation meter out to the bezel.

Of course, I recommend personalizing your Apple Watch experience (Ultra or not) with the best Apple Watch apps . If you want to try using your Apple Watch Ultra as a golf watch like I have, you might want to check out the app GolfShot . You can set up Strava on your Apple Watch, too. 

Apple Watch Ultra 2 review: Battery life

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 has the best battery life of any Apple Watch. Even with a brighter display, the watch gets 36 hours of battery life with normal use. With low power mode , the Apple Watch Ultra 2 gets up to 72 hours of battery, increased from 60 hours offered through the original.  I find Apple’s estimates align with my experience, though I appreciate how this Apple Watch setting can boost your battery life .

If you're comparing the Apple Watch Ultra to other sports watches, the battery life continues to pale by comparison. Our top pick, the Garmin Forerunner 265 , lasts 15 days with mixed use while the Coros Vertix 2 lasts 120 hours in the demanding GPS mode. Athletes who care foremost about battery life probably won't be impressed by Apple Watch Ultra 2.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 review: Verdict

While the battery life still doesn't keep up with the sportiest watches on the market, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 makes enough incremental upgrades to keep justifying the $799 price. The future-proofing enabled by the new S9 chip, added convenience of the double-tap gesture and extra brightness make for a strong — even if Iterative — second-generation attempt. I don't think the switch to recycled titanium should be understated, either. 

That said, I wouldn't be convinced as an Apple Watch Ultra user to change up for the new version, but the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is a welcome pick-up for a first-time Ultra owner.

The Ultra 2's biggest design change is NOT a switch to "95% recycled aluminum" -- which, indeed, would have been a monumental design shift for a 100% titanium watch, which the Ultra 2 continues to be. Also: how do you throw out a statement like, "It fails to deliver on the quintessential smartwatch experience" without ever qualifying what you mean? Fails to deliver HOW? I don't disagree that the Ultra 2 is a very modest upgrade over the original--the rumor mill leading up to its release predicted as much and it even failed to deliver on modest rumor expectations: no black model, no real improvement in battery life, no "next gen" upgrade of the sensors. I don't understand Apple's strategy here: there's no compelling reason for existing Ultra owners to upgrade, and if you decided against buying an Ultra 1, the Ultra 2 isn't going to change your mind. Just a significant improvement in battery life would have meant a lot to the adventure watch market that the Ultra is targeting. I do appreciate that Apple made its new Ultra Modular face available to Gen 1 owners--honestly, that was the only thing I wanted out of the Ultra 2 presentation, and it wasn't made clear (perhaps intentionally) that this face would also be available for the Ultra 1. A detailed look at the features on the new Apple Watch Ultra 2, including the new control gesture – tapping your fingers

Apple continues to build on the endurance and adventure capabilities of its flagship watch.

We were on hand for the announcement of the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 earlier today, the latest version of the watch Apple introduced last year geared towards endurance and adventure enthusiasts. In a nutshell, the new Ultra 2 builds on the original Ultra, adding the powerful new S9 SiP processor, an innovative new double tap gesture (literally tapping your fingers to control certain features), Apple’s brightest display ever, expanded altitude range, on-device Siri, Precision Finding for iPhone, and more advanced diving capabilities. The new watchOS 10 provides additional features including redesigned apps, the new Smart Stack, new cycling experiences, features to help explore the outdoors, and a new watch face — Modular Ultra. The new watch manages to add the extra computing power and brighter screen with the same battery life – 36 hours, with up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode.

Today’s launch really highlighted how the Apple Watch family has become very similar to Apple’s iPhone lineup – we can expect yearly updates in parallel to the iPhone models. The presentation also really pushed the health and safety features of the products through heart rate tracking and emergency alert features.

Apple gets even more serious about the endurance watch game with new Ultra 2

Here’s a more in depth look at the features of the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 gleaned through press releases from Apple after todays presentation at Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park in Cupertino, California:

The Ultra 2 utilizes the new S9 SiP processor. This provides enough power for on-device Siri usage, the innovative “double tap” gesture and access to health data. The new 4-core neural engine processes machine learning tasks up to twice as fast. 

Double Tap Gesture

You can control the Apple Watch Ultra 2 (and the Apple Watch Series 9) through a new double tap gesture.

“Users can tap the index finger and thumb of their watch hand together twice to quickly and conveniently perform many of the most common actions on Apple Watch Ultra 2,” Apple says. “Double tap will also open the Smart Stack from the watch face, and another double tap will scroll through widgets in the stack. Double tap controls the primary button in an app so it can be used to stop a timer, play and pause music, or snooze an alarm. The gesture can be used to answer and end a phone call, take a photo with the Camera Remote on Apple Watch, or even switch to the new Elevation view in the Compass app to see the relative elevation of saved waypoints.”

“The new double tap gesture is enabled by the faster Neural Engine in Apple Watch Ultra 2, which processes data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart sensor with a new machine learning algorithm,” today’s release continues. “The algorithm detects the unique signature of tiny wrist movements and changes in blood flow when the index finger and thumb perform a double tap. The double tap gesture will be available in a software update next month.”

Brighter Display

The new Ultra 2 now has a maximum brightness of 200 nits, 50 per cent brighter than the original. The display can be reduced to 1 nit when you want to keep things darker, while the flashlight can be set to double the brightness when needed. 

Modular Ultra Watch Face

A new watch face is available to take advantage of the larger display. The new Ultra Watch Face will “take advantage of the large display, using the outermost edge to present real-time data, including seconds, altitude, or depth.”

You’ll be to customize the complications on the watch face to keep track of activities.

Tested for Extremes

The new Apple Watch Ultra 2 has been tested from 500 meters below sea level to up to 9,000 meters at the world’s tallest peaks.

Recreational Scuba Diving and Freediving

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 offers lots of water sports features and will work for recreational scuba diving to 40 m.

On-Device Siri with Ability to Access and Log Health Data

“For the first time on Apple Watch, Siri requests can be processed on device,” Apple says. “For requests that do not require information from the internet, like starting a workout or setting a timer, Siri does not rely on Wi-Fi or cellular networks, resulting in quicker and more reliable responses. The powerful Neural Engine also makes dictation up to 25 percent more accurate.”

“On-device processing is private and secure, and now Siri can be used to access data from the Health app for health- and fitness-related queries,” Apple says. “For example, a user can ask how many hours of sleep they had the previous night, for progress on closing their Activity rings, to start an outdoor run or cycling workout, or make requests like setting a waypoint with just their voice, even with no connectivity. Users can also make Siri requests on Apple Watch Ultra 2 to log health data such as their weight, body temperature, period, or medications taken.”

Precision Finding

The new S9 SiP provides Precision Finding for the iPhone 15 family, which uses the same chip. “Precision Finding provides distance and direction, as well as visual, haptic, and audio guidance to a misplaced iPhone, even if it’s in a different room.”

Featuring watchOS 10

Apple Watch Ultra 2 runs watchOS 10, which includes: 

• Redesigned apps and a new Smart Stack to show relevant widgets
• New watch faces
• Night Mode automatically activates in the dark.
• Bluetooth connectivity for power meters, speed sensors, and cadence sensors. Power Zones help users get the most out of training.
• Cycling workouts can automatically show up as a Live Activity on iPhone.
• An updated Compass app displays current elevation in real time and includes a 3D view of waypoints showing relative elevation.
• Additional tools to support mental health with state of mind logging in the Mindfulness app.
• The ability to measure time spent in daylight using the ambient light sensor to help reduce the risk of myopia.

• Apple Watch Ultra 2 is available in 49mm, and is carbon neutral when paired with a new Trail Loop or Alpine Loop.
• New band colours are available for the Alpine Loop (blue, indigo, olive), Trail Loop (orange/beige, green/grey, blue/black) and Ocean Band (blue, orange).
• All new Apple Watch Trail Loop and Alpine Loop bands are carbon neutral and contain over 30 percent recycled content.
• Apple also announced a new Apple Watch Series 9 that will utilize the same S9 chip and offer many of the same features.
• There’s also an Apple Watch SE included in the line up.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 has now been announced as part of the  Apple September event  – you can see our  Apple event 2023 live blog  for the show as it happened. The new watch is available to order from September 12, 2023, and is actually released on September 22, 2023. It will cost the same as the previous model, give or take some small regional variations.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 didn't turn out to be a huge upgrade – there had been talk of larger screens and lightweight bodies in the run-up to the event, but instead we got some admittedly practical improvements that are largely also shared with the Apple Watch Series 9 .

And that's probably just fine – we doubt many people who spent big on the original Apple Watch Ultra last year wanted to feel like they needed to upgrade, but the changes might persuade others who are still on the fence and are wondering if this is the best Apple Watch for them. Here's what you need to know.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: Price & release date

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 will be released on September 22, 2023. It was made available to pre-order from September 12, 2023, but the actual release is on the 22nd.

It's priced at $799 / £799 / AU$1,399, which is the same as the previous model in the US, is £50 cheaper in the UK, and AU$170 more expensive in Australia.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: Design & screen

The design of the Watch Ultra 2 hasn't appreciably changed all – though Apple is pushing its low-carbon and recycled-material straps here too, so there are subtle changes to some of the bands.

It's still a tough titanium beast, thicker than the usual Apple Watch, and with the Action Button on the side for quick access to useful tools (which the iPhone 15 Pro now shares).

The only change is the screen, which is the same size and resolution as before, but now reach 3,000 nits of brightness. The previous Apple Watch Ultra hit 2,000 nits of brightness, so this is a 50% increase, which should help visibility in extreme sun conditions. This is inherently a niche upgrade in that way – 2,000 nits was already a lot , but this is a watch that's supposed to be able to handle niche and extreme stuff, so great.

There's a new watch face for the Watch Ultra too – Modular Ultra, which is the most information-dense watch face from Apple so far, capable of squeezing informations right to the edge of the display.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: Features & Double Tap

The new Apple S9 chip is at the center of most of the other upgrades in the Apple Watch Ultra 2. It's more powerful, particularly when it comes to machine learning functions, which enables a couple of the key upgrades of the Ultra 2.

First is "Double Tap" gesture control. In this, you can tap your index finger and your thumb twice quickly on your watch-wearing hand to respond to things on the screen. The chip detects your movement and even blood flow changes to detect this motion. You can Double Tap to answer calls or hang them up, to play or pause music, to snooze an alarm and more. The idea is that even if you have something in your other hand, or if you're halfway through a free climb, if you're in the middle of a fitness session and you don't want to break rhythm, you can just take action without needing to tap the screen.

The other upgrade from the chip is on-device Siri language recognition. Lots of tasks you might ask Siri can now be understood by the watch itself, rather than needing to go to the cloud, so response is faster, and works in the middle of nowhere. You can ask Siri to set a GPS waypoint, to start a workout, to set a timer – lots of functions will work offline.

Siri is also getting support for understanding questions about your data in the Health app, and you can even ask it to add data in there with just your voice.

Another internal upgrade is a U2 Ultra Wideband chip, which enables you to find your phone if you've misplaced it. The watch can literally point you in the right direction using this more precise wireless tech – and the new version has a much longer range.

The new S9 chip is significantly faster than what’s found in the Ultra and unlocks a number of new features, most importantly Double Tap. That allows you to interact with the watch without having to touch the screen—just tap your thumb and index finger together twice rapidly. Some Siri tasks are taken care of on the device, instead of sending them to the cloud. Even though it’s not a huge step up from the first generation, the Ultra 2 adds some nice features to the winning formula.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 Design

You might need to do a double-take when you see the Apple Watch Ultra 2, because it’s exactly the same design as the original. There’s no way to tell either model apart. Even on the rear of the device, where you can usually find the model of Apple Watch, it still says “Apple Watch Ultra.”

But that’s not really a bad thing. The titanium case is 49mm high, 44mm wide, and 14.4mm deep, weighing 61.4g. On the right side of the case is the Digital Crown and Side Button. While I suspect we’ll eventually see both a smaller Ultra and black titanium version, the natural metal looks great, especially when paired with the lighter colors of the iPhone 15 Pro series.

On the left side is the speaker and the multi-purpose Action Button. While it’s still the same international orange, being able to customize the Action Button is one of the best features of the Apple Watch Ultra. With just a single tap, you can begin a Workout, Stopwatch, Waypoint, Backtrack, Dive, Flashlight, or Shortcut. Shortcut support opens up a much wider variety of tasks you can accomplish with just a button push.

Instead of a rounded design and curved screen like the Apple Watch Series 9, the Ultra 2’s sapphire display is flat and protected with a raised edge. While the Apple Watch with Ion-X glass is notorious for scratching with just the slightest bump, the sapphire display is truly tough.

In a year of wearing the original Apple Watch Ultra, it still looked as good as the day it was unboxed. That’s even with me wearing it full-time with no care about whether I was gardening, swimming, hiking, and more. I strongly suspect the Apple Watch Ultra 2 will stand the test of time and rough activity.

Still Top-Notch Battery Life Even With a Brighter Screen

There is one bright spot for users looking for a major upgrade. The screen can show up to 3,000 nits of brightness in direct sunlight. That’s compared to the 2,000-nit screen of the original. I was skeptical of how much of a difference the brightness would be in real-world usage, but I was delighted with the results.

I wore both my Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Ultra while coaching my son’s baseball game. The conditions were as poor as possible to see the watch’s screen. It was a hot, cloudless day at noon with the sun shining brightly overhead. I was also wearing dark, polarized sunglasses.

But even with a darker face, the new Modular Ultra, I could see everything on the screen clearly. With the same face on the original Ultra, I had to step into a tree shadow to make out most of the screen. So if you spend a lot of time outdoors, and always want to be able to see your watch’s screen, you should have no problems with the Ultra 2.

Even at night, the increased screen brightness can help in a pinch. When using the built-in flashlight, you can turn the Digital Crown to temporarily turn it up to the maximum brightness. And while I thought the Ultra’s illumination, the max brightness on the Ultra 2 is good enough for me to ditch my long-time keychain and its built-in flashlight.

And don’t worry about the brighter screen affecting battery life. The Ultra 2 can go for up to 36 hours of use or 72 hours in Low Power Mode before needing to be recharged. The Low Power Mode is 12 hours longer than the original. In my testing, I was able to slightly exceed those numbers. In standard mode, I was able to go for three days of moderate use before needing to recharge. That included workout tracking and cellular use without an iPhone. In Low Power Mode, I squeezed just over four days of the same moderate use.

A Big Change Inside: The S9 Chip

By far the big change with the Ultra 2 is inside—the S9 chip. The S8 in the Ultra is basically the same processor first introduced with the Apple Watch Series 6 in 2020. While it was adequate for the original Ultra, the S9 chip is a substantial step up. Apple says the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine have been improved.

While I definitely wondered how much difference a faster chip could make in day-to-day use of the Apple Watch Ultra 2, it was noticeably faster. Animations were much more crisp, and even when selecting apps by turning the Digital Crown, the icons and text fly across the screen. Other tasks were also noticeably quicker.

For anyone who likes to save music directly to a watch, the Ultra 2 also has double the storage of the Ultra with 64GB.

The chip also unlocks a trio of new features. First is on-device Siri processing. Previously, any command—even like starting a workout—required a connection to the Internet. But with the S9, any commands that don’t require an Internet connection are done directly on the device. I often run with just an Apple Watch and AirPods, including many areas in cell dead zones, so it’s nice to be able to use Siri even in one of those areas. Coming later this year, thanks to the on-device Siri processing, you will also be able to use Siri to enter and find out health-related information like your resting heart rate and more.

Another nice new addition is Double Tap. Shooting off from the AssistiveTouch accessibility feature, it allows you to interact with the Ultra 2 without needing to touch the screen.

Double Tap Provides Hands-Off Control

While Double Tap wasn’t originally provided on the Ultra 2 when it officially landed, it is enabled starting with watchOS 10.1. I’ve been testing out the feature in a developer beta version.

Instead of needing to tap the screen to accomplish tasks like answering a phone call or dismissing a notification, just tap your thumb to your index finger twice in rapid succession.

I tried out the AssistiveTouch gestures with my Ultra, and wasn’t impressed as they often wouldn’t work. But Double Tap has been rock solid. The gesture just works, and as long as you remember to do the taps in quick succession, it works perfectly.

After each successful Double Tap, you’ll see an icon on top of the watch screen. And if any part of the screen is activated by the gesture, like the Dismiss button for a notification, it will also be highlighted to better see what’s happening.

One of my favorite uses of the gesture is to respond to a text hands-free. When a text arrives Double Tap to quickly bring up the dictation option so you can speak a response that you see on the screen. Double Tap one final time to send.

From a watch face, Double Tap will default to bringing up the Smart Stack and cluster of widgets that give you quick access to information. You can either choose to scroll through the widgets or select the top widget with a Double Tap.

I’ve also enjoyed scrolling through the Smart Stack using Double Tap. I hope Apple will eventually allow users to have more than seven widgets to use, though.

Even though it’s not an upgrade-worthy addition, Double Tap provides a unique and easy-to-use way to use the Apple Watch Ultra 2 when you can’t or don’t want to touch the screen.

Everything Looks Better With watchOS 10

While not exclusive to the Ultra 2, watchOS 10 looks great on the larger screen. One of the biggest changes is that the large majority of Apple’s stock apps have been redesigned in watchOS 10 , many for the first time ever. From Weather to Activity and Stocks, the apps have been revamped to take advantage of a larger watch screen like with the Ultra 2.

When not using Double Tap, you can access the Smart Stack by sliding up on any watch face or just turning the Digital Crown. Pressing the Side Button once will now bring up Control Center. One somewhat disappointing change is that you can no longer swipe left or right to quickly switch between watch faces. Hopefully, Apple will rethink that decision in the future.

As with previous software updates, there are new watch faces to select from. Modular Ultra is only available for either Apple Watch Ultra model and can showcase seven complications with the exterior of the face showing the seconds, depth, or altitude.

Two other new choices are the Snoopy face with the iconic beagle and his best friend Woodstock. This is by far one of the most interactive and fun faces for the watch ever. The duo interacts with the clock hands and the animations change depending on what you’re doing. For example, when you’re in the pool, Snoopy will don his scuba suit on the watch face.

A more minimalist choice, Palette is a world of color that will shift through the day with three overlapping layers.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: Simply the Best

You don’t want to reinvent the wheel, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 takes the winning formula and makes it even better. The brighter screen, faster processor, and Double Tap are great quality-of-life additions to the rugged design and long battery life.

If you have the original Ultra or newer Apple Watch, there’s no compelling reason to make the upgrade. But if you have an older version or are just looking for the best smartwatch on the market, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is perfect. It's well worth it's retail price and then some.

Even though it’s not a huge step up from the first generation, the Ultra 2 adds some nice features to the winning formula.

Apple Watch Ultra vs. Ultra 2 Buyer's Guide: 12 Differences Compared

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 replaces the first-generation model that was introduced last year in Apple's smartwatch lineup, but how different are the two successive smartwatch generations?

The two Apple Watch Ultra models share the overwhelming majority of their features, so should you consider buying or sticking with the first-generation to save money? This breakdown also serves as a way to see all the differences that the Ultra 2 brings to the table.

Overall, the ‌Apple Watch Ultra 2‌ is a very minor upgrade over the first-generation model, with the S9 chip, Double Tap, and Precision Finding for ‌iPhone 15‌ models being the most significant changes. As a result, it is very difficult to recommend upgrading.

Most users of the existing Apple Watch Ultra will not be able to justify upgrading to the Ultra 2, but some customers coming from an older Apple Watch or those who do not have one at all could still have good reason to prefer the latest model, namely those who heavily use a ‌HomePod‌, plan to buy an ‌iPhone 15‌ model and can take advantage of Precision Finding, need additional storage for downloaded media, or think one-handed use with the Double Tap gesture would be useful.

The ‌Apple Watch Ultra 2‌ is very similar to the first-generation model, so most customers who are interested in buying an Ultra model may prefer to look for a discounted first-generation model. If the original device can be found for a substantially lower price, it remains a solid buy. The Ultra 2 is priced at $799, so if you are not interested in its new features and can find the original model for less than ~$650, it may be worth getting that instead.

Edit. I just noticed you have iPhone 8 which can’t upgrade to iOS 17. You need to upgrade the complete iPhone to at least XS or later.

Thanks, I tried on my mums iPhone 13 and get the same message which is that I need to upgrade to latest ios. She's on ios17 too. Tried all the trouble shooting apple have asked me to with the same result. I have the 15promax on the way but have to wait a month

Per Apple: Apple Watch Ultra 2, Apple Watch Series 9, and Apple Watch SE require iPhone Xs or later with iOS 17 or later.

Current iOS is 17.0.1 or 17.0.2.

One of the folks I deal with has an Ultra 2, and it paired correctly with an iPhone running 17.0.1.

If you’ve already confirmed iOS 17.0.1 or 17.0.2 (Settings > General > About) and have been in contact with Apple, I’d re-contact them.

There are a variety of factors that go into finding the perfect watch to fit your needs. Budget of course is paramount, but existing Watch users with last year's model can also be left wondering if it's worth upgrading. The Apple Watch Series 9 didn't get a new design or new sensors, but it has the S9 SiP with a faster CPU. Owners of recent Apple Watch models likely won't need to upgrade, but the new features could prove useful, especially for those coming from older models.

Everything introduced in an Apple Watch is available in this model, including the temperature sensor, heart rate sensor, blood oxygen sensor, ECG, fall detection, and crash detection. The mature platform has little room for new sensors, but it did get a faster chipset.

The S9 SiP enables new features like on-device Siri and Double Tap. The new gesture enables users to control a button on the display by tapping their thumb and finger twice — which might play or pause a song or hang up a call.

The Apple Watch Series 9 is available from $399. The aluminum model is available in midnight, starlight, silver, and PRODUCT(RED). Stainless steel models come in graphite, gold, and silver.

The rugged Apple Watch Ultra 2 was built with the extreme athlete and explorer in mind. It can withstand harsh conditions like arid deserts and freezing mountain peaks.

The second-generation model didn't get any new sensors or design changes. What's new in this model is the S9 SiP, the same one used in the aforementioned Apple Watch Series 9.

This Apple Watch has all of the features found in Apple Watch Series 9 wrapped in a tough titanium exterior. The 49mm case is the biggest ever on an Apple Watch, and its sapphire-covered display is also the brightest at 3,000 nits.

Even if you're not going to dive 100M or endure temperatures from -20 C to 55 C, this is still a great model for large watch lovers. Take advantage of the Action Button to program an action or shortcut for instant access to any feature, or sound a loud siren to help others find you in the wilderness.

All the latest health and safety features are here too. Keep track of your heart rate during workouts, perform an ECG, track your sleep, or be notified of a possible ovulation thanks to temperature tracking.
