Welcome to the Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine (SGBM)!

SGBM is an international and multidisciplinary graduate program. Its ultimate goal is to enable doctoral researchers to assimilate knowledge and techniques from various disciplines as well as combine basic with translational research, biotechnology and drug development.

To achieve this goal, SGBM relies on the expertise of internationally renowned scientists - Principal Investigators - who, besides being members of this program, also lead or actively participate in numerous collaborating research initiatives at the University of Freiburg, i.e. Excellence Clusters, Collaborative Research Centers, and other structured graduate programs.

SGBM doctoral fellows work in high-profile research environments across disciplines grouped in seven research areas . They attend lectures, seminars, workshops, regional and international meetings as well as annual retreats. Moreover, fellows have the opportunity to actively participate in the organization of scientific and social events that are part of the curriculum. The entire program is run in English.

The University of Freiburg has a longstanding tradition in excellence and several Nobel laureates have been associated with this university, as can be seen in this brochure (in German).

PhD Program

International phd program in computational neuroscience and neurotechnology.

The Bernstein Center Freiburg (BCF) offers a multi-disciplinary, international PhD program in Computational Neuroscience and Neurotechnology. PhD students from different backgrounds in natural sciences, mathematics, engineering sciences or computer science are provided with a thorough scientific and methodological basis in computational neuroscience and neurotechnology for an academic or application-oriented career. The PhD program is open to students from Germany and abroad.

Key features of the PhD program

Membership in the program provides

  • basic training in Computational Neuroscience and Neurotechnology, as well as other related fields
  • opportunities for scientific exchange with other senior and junior scientists
  • opportunities to team up with other neuroscience research labs in Freiburg
  • access to the Computational Neuroscience community in Germany

How to apply?

There are several ways to join the PhD Program:

  • Apply directly to one of our open positions in research projects of the BCF or directly contact one of the BCF members whose research you are interested in..
  • Join us by applying to the Spemann Graduate School of Biology & Medicine . Instructions on how to apply are detailed on the SGBM website .
  • Provide your own funding, e.g. through a DAAD fellowship, a scholarship from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes  or from the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds . For these fellowships you typically need to submit a research proposal together with a potential supervisor. Please check the websites of the BCF members to find out whose research interests you most. You should contact that person directly and ask whether he/she is willing to discuss a possible project with you, to supervise your PhD thesis, and to support your funding application.

We are recruiting doctoral researchers

Please check in the “ How to apply ” section for more information on the application process. Relevant dates for the recruitment process are provided on the right hand side of our webpage.

Deadline: June 21st, 2024

Deadline: June 21 st , 2024

Welcome to the International Max Planck Research School for Immunobiology, Epigenetics, and Metabolism (IMPRS-IEM) – a joint international PhD program of the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics and the University of Freiburg. The research carried out at IMPRS-IEM focuses on diverse questions in the fields of:

EPIGENETICS METABOLISM BIOPHYSICS CELL BIOLOGY BIOCHEMISTRY PROTEOMICS BIOINFORMATICS FUNCTIONAL GENOMICS

We offer talented doctoral researchers excellent training opportunities in the fields of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biophysics, Epigenetics and Metabolism. Scientific education in a first-class environment supports their development into outstanding young scientists.

Our doctoral researchers receive employment contracts according to the guidelines by the Max Planck Society for the duration of their PhD research. The payment is sufficient to cover the monthly living costs in Freiburg. There are no tuition fees.

The IMPRS program is managed by the IMPRS office in collaboration with the two IMPRS Spokespersons and the members of the Graduate Committee. We currently have 55 students from 25 countries . We are also very proud of our growing alumni group, which comprises more than 117 graduates .

What we offer

One of the distinctive aspects of our program is a rotation period . Doctoral researchers spend one month each in three different laboratories before starting their PhD project. This is an important step towards identifying a suitable laboratory for their PhD thesis, as it allows them to experience three distinct lab environments and provides further insight into particular research topics. The rotations are also a chance for group leaders to ascertain which doctoral researcher will be the best fit for their groups. Finally, this rotation phase enhances communication and networking within the Institute.

After the rotation period, doctoral researchers join the lab in which they will carry out their PhD work. The PhD project constitutes the core of the scientific training. IMPRS doctoral researches benefit from the supervision of the respective group leader, interactions within the laboratory and collaborations within and outside the MPI-IE. The progress of all IMPRS doctoral researchers is regularly monitored by their thesis advisory committees (TACs).

A broad curriculum complements the laboratory training. This additional training program covers three major aspects - advanced scientific training, transferable career-critical skills and networking. In particular, we offer courses that relate to:

  • Advanced scientific methods e.g. bioinformatics, statistics, imaging
  • Critical analysis of scientific literature
  • Scientific Writing
  • Scientific Presentation
  • Good Scientific Practice
  • Career Development

We strongly encourage participation in the annual PhD retreat organized by the PhD representatives. Furthermore, we support doctoral researchers' attendance at regional symposia and international scientific conferences and provide advice for future career planning.
