What can I expect in the courseroom?

Each unit consists of readings, discussions and other activities you will be expected to complete throughout the week. Most deadlines for coursework occur on Thursdays and/or Sundays but may vary by program and course. In each course, you will receive a detailed scoring guide that describes expectations for every graded assignment.

How will I be graded?

Grades are based on your participation in weekly reading discussions and completion of assignments, based on criteria outlined in the rubric. You will also be assessed on your ability to demonstrate an understanding of expected outcomes for your program or specialization. These outcomes are based on the needs and performance standards of your field or discipline.

Complete 45 quarter credits. Choose your courses from the categories below, with a minimum of 4 quarter credits from each category.

In the FlexPath format, you can take a maximum of two courses at a time, and the time it takes for you to complete your program can vary. Check in with your academic coach to get help with course registration questions.

With FlexPath, you set your deadlines within the first 12 days of each course. Take one or two courses at a time and complete them on your schedule. While these deadlines can be adjusted at any time after you set them, you’ll be required to engage in a course activity at least once every 28 days and finish each course within 12 weeks. You’ll use the same quick and seamless process for submitting assessments for every course. A scoring guide explains what you’ll be evaluated on, and a competency map shows your progress.

Each course in FlexPath is based on a set of competencies, which are further broken down into criteria. A criterion is a specific step in demonstrating a competency. You’ll have a scoring guide that explains competencies and each criterion. As you complete assessments, your score on each criterion is evaluated against this scoring guide. Each time you receive an evaluation on a criterion, your competency map will update to reflect your progress. To pass a course, you must meet the minimum level requirement set by your program for every competency in the course.

Learners in this course focus on synthesizing and applying the nursing knowledge and skills gained during their program. Learners demonstrate proficiency by integrating nursing theories, research, and best practices into a single practice model of health promotion or disease prevention for a specific community or population group. Learners create and customize an evidence-based project plan and develop and implement strategies for achieving desired project outcomes. For BSN learners only. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing accredited* degree program (RN-to-BSN) prepares registered nurses for expanded professional nursing practice that impacts patient, systems, and population outcomes. In the program, learners develop and integrate knowledge and skills in patient-centered care, population health, interprofessional collaboration and teamwork, quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and informatics. Capstone courses function as a bridge between the end of school and the beginning of a career, allowing nursing students to put what they’ve learned into practice. As the name suggests, students complete capstones toward the end of their nursing training. Not every nursing program requires a capstone, but those that do generally culminate in a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) or doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree.

Each nursing program sets their own requirements. While capstone formats differ between programs, they typically consist of an evidence-based practice formal paper or presentation. Students might complete their capstone projects as team leaders, and BSN candidates may present their papers to a faculty panel. Projects could include case studies, program evaluations, and policy analyses.

The focus on evidence-based practice allows students to apply research and experiential evidence toward solving a healthcare problem. For example, candidates may develop intervention strategies that promote health, improve outcomes, enhance quality of life, and foster safe practices for patients.

Capstone goals center on the application of knowledge gained during nursing training programs, including topics related to leadership , management, research, theories, and evidence-based practice, along with the strategies needed to transition from students to baccalaureate-level nurses.

Choosing Your Nursing Capstone Topic

When selecting a capstone topic, students should evaluate their interests, strengths, and weaknesses, along with their chosen nursing specialty area. Luther College recommends that students with lower GPAs and weaker nursing skills consider a basic medical-surgical topic. Those with strong clinical skills and high GPAs might choose emergency or intensive care medicine, although some students might prefer outpatient topics, such as clinical services, long-term care, or public health. However, this is simply an example of one school’s approach, and readers should keep in mind that each school sets its own policies and recommendations.

Asking for guidance from faculty, supervisors, preceptors, and fellow students also helps narrow down capstone topics. Advisors can also provide assistance in choosing an appropriate capstone site, helping with questions of geographical location, facility size, patient population, and care delivery model.

Students develop and learn the skills needed to complete their capstones throughout their training. These include organization and time management, knowledge of evidence-based practice, writing, and critical thinking. They also learn to conduct literature searches, identify research designs, and evaluate evidence.

Completing Your Nursing Capstone

Capstone formats and completion times widely vary between programs. Students at Luther College and Purdue University Northwest complete their capstones in 4-5 weeks, while Ferris State University specifies a timeframe of 30 hours of online classes and 90 hours of applied project work. Case Western Reserve University’s capstone spans 10 weeks.

Regardless of the program, most students follow a PICO format for project proposal questions of inquiry: population, intervention, comparison or condition, and outcome.

Some universities allow capstone projects to be completed in teams, in which students develop and implement the project. Capstone components may include defining the project and the team leader’s role, selecting team members, and formulating the project plan.

In addition to the skills previously referenced, such as knowledge of evidence-based care, critical thinking, and effective writing, capstone courses hone leadership and management abilities These include mastering therapeutic communication, applying leadership and management concepts, and developing collaborative relationships and working on multidisciplinary teams.

Presenting Your Nursing Capstone

The capstone process culminates in a paper or presentation that measures students’ skills in communication, information dissemination, and application of evidence-based practice skills. Members of the public may attend.

Utilizing the poster format, students commonly use three panels to illustrate: (1) the background, problem, and purpose; (2) methodology; and (3) 2-3 key findings and implications. Students who present using PowerPoint on a laptop or other device should pay attention to time limits, planning for one slide per minute, and verify that equipment and internet connectivity are available.

Visuals like graphs, figures, and bullet points are more effective than large blocks of text . Students should practice presenting in front of others to ensure that they thoroughly know their content and can answer questions. Backing up a copy of a PowerPoint presentation and printing out copies or transparencies guards against last-minute glitches.

How is a Nursing Capstone Graded?

Capstone grading methods differ between programs, with some issuing letter grades and others using a pass/no pass system. Grades typically hinge on a percentage basis of the project’s written sections, the final proposal, and the presentation. Faculty evaluate how students execute the capstone course objectives, which may include the following:

Students’ presentation skill evaluation criteria include exhibiting thorough preparation and knowledge of the subject matter, clear and concise communication, adherence to any time limits, ability to answer questions and cite references, and persuasiveness.

What is the Difference Between a Nursing Capstone and a Thesis?

Students complete capstones individually or in groups, while thesis projects must be done alone. Capstone project time lengths span between four and 12 weeks, while graduate students work on their thesis projects throughout their 2- to 3-year programs. Graduate thesis courses generally take place over 1-2 semesters to keep students on track.

Finally, capstone topics evaluate current issues and theories; thesis students incorporate existing case studies and literature while exploring and arguing for their own original research. Some schools require students to publish their thesis papers in a healthcare journal.

My Capella MSN course actually begins on Monday, July 13th. My enrollment advisor called and told me that the course actually opened up early (today, Friday-July 11th). I immediately went to the course and read the syllabus and requirements of the first assessment.

I spent about 2-4 hours searching, reviewing, and selecting articles that were in line with my thoughts for the assessment last night, and did a little more research from reputable organizations that I've worked and today, I have just finished my first paper (two whole days before the start of class)! Writing papers have never been a problem for me; I find the research to be the hardest part. I try not to begin the paper on a day that I've gathered research, just so I can give my brain a rest. ? But today, those little last-minute ideas tend to pop up sometimes and are needed to really drive home an idea.

I won't submit the paper just yet because I have a question that I want clarification on first. Once that is answered and I make revisions (if needed), I will submit it and it is on to assessment 2 of 3. I will be done with this first course, which hopefully, will be by the end of the week (long before my estimated date of completion of 07/19/2020), if the other two assessments go as easily as this appears to be going. It helps that I happen to be on vacation until July 20th, too. It will be so nice to have this course under my belt before my vacation is over. ?

I know you mentioned you started in July, does Capella enroll students more than twice a year? Wondering what month I could anticipate starting. Another question (sorry), were you able to get financial aid for the MSN Degree?

The answer to your questions is yes. I’m using student loans, and I’m doing the Flexpath option (going at my own pace). I’m not sure about enrollment into the Guidedpath option (traditional 16-wk courses). But with Flexpath, courses begin each month.

Today is the official start of class, and I’ll be submitting my first two assessments before the end of the day. One more to go, and I’m done with this class. Then I can immediately jump right into the next. I’m hoping for a February completion, at least with everything except the practicum; but it depends on the level of difficulty of the courses. Giving it my best shot, though.

Update: I completed all course requirements yesterday (5 days after starting). Just waiting on final grade to post.

Oh this is what it was like pre internet. . I wish I had the time back used in searching the stacks of bound journals where I thought I would find good articles for class or my thesis. We had the seminar format for most classes where we each had to assign research articles, present them and encourage discussion among our class participants. I started with CINAHL and then found the chosen articles in the stacks. Sometime the articles fit my needs; more often not. Reading the abstract saved me time and money.

I was often derailed when I found an article that looked interesting but was not related to my paper and had to sit down to read it (on the rolling stool one would need to reach up for items on the high shelf.)

Because I had gone to the bank earlier, I had rolls of quarters to spend on the Xerox machine to copy the pertinent articles. I patiently waited in line for my turn with the dental and medical students while praying the xerox would not suddenly end up in difficulties. It was the weekend after all. and the xerox repair man only worked Monday through Friday. It usually took one or two full days to gather what I thought were good and needed articles.

I truly loved the hunt which is probably why I ended up documenting antiques after retiring from nursing. I am a very good researcher when we look for details /use/etc for a piece that we don't know what it is, its age and manufacturer or its purpose.

What I wouldn’t give for retirement! After reading your post, I am so thankful that I wasn’t in an MSN mindset in my younger years. The process from yesteryear wouldn’t have made me happy, determined, not motivated at all! ?

My Master's was a full 2 years but all-in-all I look back fondly on it. At the time not so much fondness. I learned a lot and I still love library research. There is an art to it. At my last faculty position I racked up 45 hours of post masters credits over 4 summers and loved doing it. It was in an education program that allowed you to choose your own courses and for every course you had to create something that you would use in your teaching. I was totally aware that the credits would not lead to a doctoral program. And I was able to pay the tuition as I progressed. No loans!

I am glad that nurses today can invest their valuable time on what is really important in nursing research. But I hope they can find something that speaks to them directly.

That is awesome! I don't plan on going further than the Masters; but in all fairness, I wasn't planning on going any further than an LPN , either. Who knows what the future holds. Whatever is in store for me had better reveal itself soon because in the next 6 years, I plan to be joining you on the sidelines of this rat race. Having the MSN , I may extend those plans if it affords me a lucrative work-from-home (non-teaching) position. What that may entail, I haven't a clue. But I will be more than satisfied with it being the end of the nursing road for me. We shall see..

I completed all 7 MSN core courses before September ended. I will start working on the remaining 5 MSN specialization courses on October 12th. I’m hoping to begin the practicum (100 hours) in January. Counting down...
