Today, plastic usage has increased gradually with the appearance of the number of shops in the market. Because of the most affordable and cheap material, plastic is used everywhere. Since plastic is non-biodegradable, it does not decompose easily.

Using plastics and depositing them in the garbage bin after their use harms the whole environment and Earth severely and decreases the quality of the soil in which it is getting blenched after several days.

Usage of plastic has gradually increased. We can find plastic everywhere in this world. Because plastic is cheap and easily available, it is used at a very high level worldwide.

In the world as a whole, plastic is used to pack the bought items. It is also very convenient for the customers to carry the purchased products in a bag of plastic. But using this plastic material and depositing it in the garbage bin after its use is completed is harming the whole environment of the Earth. It also decreases the soil quality in which it is getting blenched after a significant number of days.

Since plastic is non-biodegradable, it is very difficult to decompose it completely. It takes many years to decompose completely in soil. Therefore it is very important to ‘say no to plastic’. Due to plastics being made up of strong chemicals, it is resistant to the many natural degradation processes. Plastic pollution is affecting both water bodies and land.

Due to excessive use of plastic, the soil of the Earth surface is losing its fertility because plastic marine life is severely hampered. Many species of fish are getting extinct because of plastic pollution. It is also destroying the habitat of aquatic organisms. Many companies are using plastic to package their food products and other things; it is causing many diseases by consuming the food products packaged in plastic.

Thus, to avoid the harmful effects of plastic pollution, consumers should be aware of using those dangerous plastic products.

People should not accept plastics from the stores while buying any item. The social organisation should conduct many awareness programs to educate the civilians against the harmful effects of using plastics. It is very important to be aware of plastic pollution because it is highly poisonous and deadly for the globe’s environment, which may even disrupt the hormonal balance in humans. So it has become very important to ‘say no to plastic’.

The usage of plastic became a part of our lifestyle in the 20 century. People go empty-handed to the shops and markets and return with lots of plastic bags carrying their items. Plastics are mostly made up of polythene which is made out of petroleum.

As we know, petroleum is a limited natural resource, which can be exhausted if used irrationally. Many toxic chemicals are also released while manufacturing plastic materials and bags, which is very harmful to the globe’s environment.

Plastics are made up of a hard chemical structure which is very difficult to decompose easily. Since plastics are non-biodegradable, it takes hundreds and thousands of years to decompose completely in the soil. Due to plastic pollution, many water bodies and the fertility of the Earth are getting destroyed.

Due to the consumption of plastic by animals, they are dying in large numbers. It also becomes the reason for the extinction of many aquatic organisms. Many whales and marine microorganisms are dying because of plastic pollution in water bodies. Natural habitats of aquatic organisms are also getting destroyed because of plastic.

Many companies are using plastic for the packaging of their food products which is harmful to our health. It is damn easy to say no to plastic. Keep a bag made out of cotton or jute with you. Don’t take items in plastic bags. Use materials that are easily degradable and say no to plastic.

Plastic has become one of the serious ecological threats to humanity. Including India, almost 74 countries have called a ban on plastic bags and plastic materials, and 34 States impose a charge per pack. The PM has called for a nationwide ban on single-use plastic products in India, especially plastic bags, cups, and plastic bottles.

We know that plastics are made up of petroleum which is not easily degradable in the environment; therefore, the government should take strict measures and a lot of plastic bag disposal systems in many cities, towns and rural areas to avoid littering. To prevent plastic bags ‘ need, people should make alternatives such as canvas bags, paper bags, cans, paper boxes, etc.

Plastic bags alone kill almost 1 lakh birds and Marine animals every year. Hundreds to thousands of Whales and turtles have died of poisoning by eating plastic particles mistaking it as a jellyfish. Plastic is also dangerous for our health, so it has become very important to say no to plastic and choose other alternatives for our daily needs.

Introduction

Plastic bags are quite popular because they are light in weight, easily affordable and easy to carry. Because of the cheap price, plastic bags are used by many shopkeepers. We don’t need to purchase these plastic bags and our purchased items as they are given freely by the shopkeepers.

A problem caused by plastic

As plastics are non-biodegradable, it takes hundreds and thousands of years to degrade completely in the soil. Here are some of the problems caused by plastic are :

Non-biodegradable

Plastic materials and plastic bags are non-biodegradable. Thus disposing of these plastics is the biggest challenge for us. They break down into small particles and enter the soil and water bodies; however, they do not decompose completely. Since it takes many years to decompose, it pollutes the ground of the Earth’s surface, decreases soil fertility, and decreases the production of vegetables and crops.

Harmful effects on the environment

Plastics are destroying nature owing to their harmful effect. Plastics have become a major cause of land pollution and water pollution today. Plastic wastes that are thrown into the landfills take almost 500 years to decompose. It is also destroying the ecosystem of oceans and seas. It is polluting the water bodies and killing the aquatic animals. Thousands of Whales and millions of fish are getting killed because of plastic pollution in the ocean.

The harmful effect of plastic on animals and Marine creatures

Many animals and Marine creatures consume plastic along with their natural Food. Plastics cannot be digested and thus get trapped in their body. Large amounts of plastic particles accumulated in the intestines of various sea creatures and animals result in serious health problems. Millions of animals and sea creatures are killed just because of plastic pollution. It has become one of the biggest problems for the entire world to avoid plastic.

Cause of illness in humans because of plastic.

The manufacturing of plastic bags releases toxic chemicals that can cause serious illness among those involved in plastic manufacturing. Because of its cheap price, plastic bags are used for the packaging of Food which can also cause health hazards.

To meet the demands of plastic products from the general public, the manufacturing industries expanded, resulting in massive production of plastic. The second issue was that there was no proper disposal or recycling method followed in tackling the plastic waste, which made plastic waste litter the surroundings. Plastic waste chokes the drain, causing water overflow.

Burning plastics produces harmful chemicals capable of causing cancer. Plastic waste gets trapped underground and prevents the sweeping of water into the ground.

Most plastic wastes find their way to water bodies like rivers, seas, oceans etc. Many of them get consumed by animals on land and water. To save our environment, we must say no to plastics.

As a first step in saying no to plastic, I used to replace plastic items in my house with more eco-friendly products. I have replaced plastic bags with jute bags for usage purposes. They may appear costlier, but they can be reused and are much safer for the environment.

Similarly, plastic containers and bottles can be replaced by healthier metal counterparts. Please dispose of the plastic waste in your home safely and never burn them.

Lastly, I used to make my family aware of the impotence of avoiding plastic products.

The problem of plastic waste disposal has resulted in a worldwide emergency, necessitating immediate international action. An efficient strategy to reduce plastic use is urgently required. To solve the issue of plastic pollution, we must first learn how to recognise it and then abandon plastic entirely. Plastic bags and other plastic materials should be banned, and our government should impose severe regulations to make this possible.

The answer could be mushrooms. The Fungi Mutarium (Utrecht University) is working with a mushroom that can actually break down plastic. This could work in landfills, however, the plastic that is roaming our seas or sitting in natural spaces will need to be physically removed.

Advantages of Plastic

•  protects vulnerable products from damage by humidity, microorganisms, insects, and sunlight.

Plastic pollution is one of the most critical environmental issues these days. It is the accumulation of plastic materials (like grocery bags, drink bottles, straws, food wrappers, plastic packaging, and microbeads) in the marine and wild environments. This accumulation adversely impacts both humans and wildlife. 1. Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes from coastal nations into the oceans 1. This is like setting five garbage bags full of trash on every foot of coastline around the world 2. The latest studies indicated that microplastics are being eaten by animals 2 . These microplastics could negatively impact their lives and human health because they can be stored in the animals’ tissues and cells for months. Scientists believe that the amount of plastic in the ocean might triple by 2050 3 . Learn why microplastic pollution prevention matters and the most effective strategies that can be taken by individuals to decrease plastic waste, and say no to single-use plastic.

Why does single-use plastic pollution matter?

Interesting statistics and facts:

• The United States is by far the world’s largest generator of plastic waste—it produced about 42 million metric tons of the waste (46 million U.S. tons) in 2016 4 .
• The U.S. ranks as high as third among coastal nations for contributing litter, illegally dumping trash and other mismanaged waste to it’s shorelines 4 .
• The average American uses and throws away 110 pounds, or roughly 50 kilograms, of single-use plastic every year 5 .
• Only about 8% of plastic gets recycled in the United States 5 . Learning how to recycle properly is a key factor in increasing this percentage.
• Half of all plastics ever manufactured have been made in the last 15 years 2 .
• Production increased exponentially, from 2.3 million tons in 1950 to 448 million tons by 2015. Production is expected to double by 2050 2 .

Last year, in partnership with SYSTEMQ, a London-based environmental consulting firm, Pew (Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan fact tank) predicted that plastic waste in the marine environment will triple by 2040. Pew suggested the world should act urgently to eliminate plastic use and gain control of trash 6 . According to a study in 2015, scientists found many developing nations with poor waste management 6 . These nations have reported later improvements in waste management and the construction of infrastructure 6 . Asian nations are one of the top five collections of nations that reported more gains. For example, China has reported about a 60% decrease in waste generation and a 51% reduction in inadequately managed waste. These decreases happened due to the rapid construction of incineration plants 6 . In 2016, there were more than half of the 3.91 million metric tons of plastics gathered and exported outside the United States  6 . There were about 88% of the plastics exported to nations lacking adequate resources to properly manage and process them  6 . There were about 1 million metric tons of waste that were estimated by the team; This ended up polluting the marine environment outside the United States  6 .

How did single-use plastic come about.

Plastics are made up of fossil fuels that can be over a century old 5 . World War II had produced and developed thousands of new plastic products 2 . Nowadays, plastic is one of the important things which made the modern age cannot live without it. Plastics revolutionized medicine with life-saving devices, made space travel possible, lightened cars and jets, saved lives with helmets, incubators, and equipment for clean drinking water 2 . Unfortunately, some of these plastic products have a long lifespan when they enter the environment and it can persist for more than hundreds of years 5 .

“If we don’t get the plastic pollution problem in the ocean under control, we threaten to contaminate the entire marine food web, from phytoplankton to whales. And by the time science catches up to this, perhaps definitively concluding that this is problematic, it will be too late. We will not be able to go back. That massive amount of plastic will be embedded in the ocean’s wildlife essentially forever 7 .”

The best solution to prevent plastic waste from entering rivers and seas is to understand our responsibilities towards our ecosystem 8 . Here are some significant steps people can follow to eliminate single-use plastic:

These animals are consumed by larger animals and through consumption of these animals, the particles enter the bodies of human beings. This increases the risk of cancer in humans.

Plastic is also the main reason of soil infertility. Since its non-degradable so it mixes with soil and does not allow water to pass through. Moreover, plastic is also a threat to marine life.

Our oceans are filled with plastic junk which is affecting marine life dangerously. Marine animals consume this plastic and it gets stuck in their throat. Moreover, the consumption of plastic is also affecting the physiological structure of these animals.

People also heat food in microwave in plastic boxes which causes release of harmful toxins which get mixed in food. When they eat this food, it increases their risk of getting many diseases like cardiac problems, cancer and asthma.

Unfortunately, people are okay with this situation. They do not care as long as their houses are clean. They throw wrappers and plastic bags on streets for sweepers to clean their mess.

If sweepers lack somewhere in their duty then all people do is sit and complain about how government is not making the city clean. Due to this irresponsible behavior, drains get filled with junked plastic and get clogged.

Steps; How to Stop Plastic Use

Plastic pollution is extremely dangerous for environment. Therefore, it is high time to take this issue seriously and take essential steps to fight against it. Following are some ways to replace the use of plastic:

• Instead of plastic bags, we should promote the use of paper bags. We can also put a basket in our car into which we can fill our shopped items. These paper bags are so easy to make at home.
• It is our moral duty that if we find any plastic litter in our streets then we should throw it in the dustbins so that it does not get eaten by stray animals.
• Public awareness is very important to educate the people about the harmful effects of plastic. Government should also take strict actions to ban the production and use of plastic bags.

This is our country and it is our responsibility to take care of the mess which is a threat to this country. If we prevent the use of plastic in our daily life like a responsible person then there will less junk floating in our country.

We use plastic bottles to carry water and various drinks. These bottles release chemicals into our food which leads to various health problems. Apart from this, when we order food online, it is mostly packed in plastic bags which becomes toxic and not healthy food .

So, the use of plastic is no better. We need to replace this practice with some alternatives so that we can prevent all of these harmful effects. Let’s talk about some of the ways to say no to plastic.

Use a stainless tiffin to avoid health problems. Four. Avoid ordering food online where you find plastic packaging, it is better to eat healthy homely food.

Five. dump the plastic-made items into the proper place. Also, if you find plastic litter on the streets, make sure to transfer it to dustbins so that animals do not eat it. Six. Spread awareness about the harmful effects of the use of plastic.

To sum it up, there are various ways to say no to plastic. We need to care for our health, our animals and our environment for sustainable development.

Background:

• Plastic was popularised in the 1960s as a convenient material for everyday use.
• The problems caused by single use plastics (SUPs) were recognised in 2007
• United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) had declared the theme for World Environment Day 2018 as ‘ Beat Plastic Pollution’ . It was hosted by India.
• As a part of the event, the government had announced its intention to phase out single-use plastic by 2022 .
• Plastic waste has been observed everywhere, from the depths of the oceans to the peaks of Himalayas.
• Plastic can’t be removed entirely from the planet because it has many advantages as a material for daily use and in specialty applications.
• Saudi Arabia plans to invest in India to produce more petrochemicals and plastic, slowly transforming India into one of the biggest producers and consumers of plastic.

Issues Caused by Plastic:

• Regulation of Single Use Plastics (SUPs) is a major problem the world is battling at this point of time.
• SUPs are used only once and thrown into the environment.
• Consumers find SUPs such as food packaging (especially in home delivery of food), disposable glasses, straws much more convenient to use.
• According to the Environment Ministry , about 20,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated every day in the country, out of which only 13,000-14000 tonnes are collected.
• Worldwide , the amount of plastic waste collected is only around 16-18% of the total generation.
• Plastics do not decay in the soil but undergoes wear and tear and disintegrates into micron sized particles ( micro plastics ).
• Plastics may disappear from the eyes but the invisible micro plastics remain to cause problems.
• There are no credible estimates about the quantity of micro plastics present in the soil and oceans.
• In a recent research micro plastics were found in the snow samples collected from the Svalbard islands of the Arctic sea .
• Uncollected SUPs accumulate in the water bodies and clogs the drains before ultimately reaching the oceans.
• The North Pacific Garbage Dump/Gyre is an example of accumulation of plastic in the ocean.
• The garbage gyre churns the plastic waste and produces much more micro plastics.
• Animals, especially marine organisms often consume micro plastics and eventually die.
• Further, clogging of drains is a factor responsible for floods
• Micro plastics may accumulate in the lungs and blood streams and cause severe consequences.
• Carcinogenic chemicals such as furans and dioxins are released by the burning or pyrolysis of plastic.
• People often drink hot water in PET bottles and consume harmful components.
• Collection of used plastics, mostly done in the informal sector , stay away from collecting certain types of waste because of lack of profit . Ex.: Pet bottles fetch a higher price, but straws carry bags, etc. do not.
• Businesses to business (B2B) transmission of goods involve huge quantities of around 130 types of plastic packaging.
• Throwing away plastic is everyone’s problem and nobody is willing to take responsibility.
• It is difficult to reduce the use of plastic since it is cheaper .
• There is a notion that some plastic is good and others wrong. But, even cloth fabric, earbuds and cigarette butts are harmful, as they may disperse micro plastic fibrils in the air.
• Industries make us subservient to plastic . If we reduce using it, industry lobby will fund illegitimate studies to prove that plastic is not harmful.

The Real Cost of Plastic:

• Plastic materials may be cheap but the distributed cost or decentralised cost is very high.
• The distributed cost or decentralised cost is calculated by considering the environmental, economic and health damages and threats.
• Fisheries sector may suffer due to the deadly impact of micro plastics in the marine environment and India being a major exporter of marine products should keep its oceans free of plastic, as plastic digested fishes are rejected, as due standards are expected.
• Since plastics are synthesised from petroleum the cost involves the environmental damage done during the mining, transportation and refining of petroleum.

Way Forward:

• Customers can ensure the quality of the products since they could see and taste it directly.
• Segregation, collection and disposal of plastic waste needs to be done in a proper scientific
• Alternate materials should be mass produced so that they become affordable with the help of economy of scale and large demand .
• Appropriate funding should be provided for a comprehensive research to identify and quantify the plastic waste and detect the sources .
• A comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of each type of plastic need to be carried out, considering the environmental and health costs .
• Start-ups, universities and research centres need to find new ways to recycle plastic such as using it in highways construction , etc.
• Companies which made huge profit from selling plastics have the liability and moral responsibility to fund research for alternatives.
• The supply chain of plastic need to be tracked for determining whether they are collected back or not.
• There should be a consensus based on the fact that plastic is not essential for our survival.
• Awareness programs need to be expanded and innovative ideas need to be invited from the civil society.

Technological Solutions:

• The cost for adopting is not too high as well and this is currently practiced on commercial basis in Australia
• What we need at this moment is opening of opportunities to new start-up companies and using the knowledge of ISRO to make it an adaptable mission
• Plastic waste can be used as an alternate fuel for co-processing in cement kilns.
• Reverse vending machine in Bangalore and Karol bagh scraps plastic bottles.

Alternatives:

• If plastic needs to be banned, affordable alternates need to be promoted.
• Alternative materials to plastic should be environment-friendly and affordable .
• Glass bottles, aluminium containers (for milk), cloth and jute bags can be used while shopping.
• Alternatives made of natural material provide employment opportunities in the cottage industry

Conclusion:

• Plastic is a miraculous product but it is harmful to the ecosystem as a whole. It is already too late to destroy the existing plastic waste without causing pollution. In addition to that, each type of plastic need to be replaced with an eco-friendly material at the manufacturing level itself.
• In the past civilizations have survived without plastic so going forward this society can also survive without it but with suitable alternatives infused by upgrading the technology.
• It is now the right time to say no to plastic.

10 easily ways to say NO to plastic everyday

NO to plastic! Why? Simply because it is one of the most hardly recycling materials, and we use it basically everywhere. If people contaminate the environment with plastic, they generate great damage, especially for the sea and oceans.

Think about it, every year we abandon 8 million plastic garbage in water (as the UNEP leaders tell us). Not only are we responsible for the destruction of underwater habitats but also we’re putting in danger the survival of entire species.

This ‘’garbage vortex’’ has a name, Great Pacific Garbage Patch . This is literally a huge plastic island in the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, there are many more, smaller than this one, scattered across the waters of our planet.

The problem is serious, just think about the island’s extent. It’s larger than Spain! It’s been formed in the ‘80s and since then, it has caused lots of victims. Fish, turtles, and birds, just to name some examples. If we keep on acting like that, by 2050 there will be more waste than fish in the sea . At least, this is what experts claim.

Eliminate plastic, also while traveling

We all have to do something concrete to reduce the amount of plastic that is invading our planet. There are many ways to make a contribution and improve the situation. Here are some useful tips:

1. Drink tap water or buy glass bottles

If the tap water taste good and it’s drinkable, you shouldn’t buy liters and liter of water in disposable bottles. Not only could you save up money, but also you’ll produce less plastic waste.

In case you don’t want to drink from your tap, you could buy glass water bottles. They’re easier to reuse and dispose of.

2. Avoid plastic bags

On holiday, don’t carry your things in plastic bags. Instead, take with you cloth and cotton bags , or rigid bags that you can reuse (they are more difficult to split). Alternatively, you can use biodegradable bags.

3. Get rid of single doses

Avoid buying single-dose packaging for your personal care and try not to use those that hotels provide you. Take with you large sizes , which last longer.

4. Travel with your water bottle

Traveling, cycling, running ad doing sports require lots of water to drink in order to compensate for the liquids you lose. Instead of buying water bottles every time, get yourself a canteen to fill when you need it.

5. Get yourself a travel kit

Avoid using plastic plates and cutlery and take with you a kit of glasses and dishes. In so doing, you’ll be able to eliminate a large amount of plastic that we usually use when we are outside.

6. Avoid snacks

When you spend the whole day out of home, make sure that you have sack food , as for example a sandwich. In this way, you won’t have to buy packed snacks!

7. Pick up alternative straws

If using straws for drinking is a habit, avoid plastic straws and use those made of glass, paper, bamboo or steel. There are many different choices. Besides, these alternatives are often very nice to see, as well as completely ecological.

8. Use fabric napkins and handkerchiefs

The paper handkerchiefs are packed in plastic bags. So use napkins and handkerchiefs from paper or fabric cases, which you can wash and reuse.

9. Buy cardboard or in glass products

Avoid products enclosed in plastic packaging or drinks in disposable bottles. Choose those in glass or cupboard, easier to dispose of.

10. Try with creative recycling!

If you have disposable bottles to throw away, remember that you can always reuse them. You just need a little bit of imagination ! Create games for your children or useful items that otherwise you should buy. For example, you could create nice jars or unique puppets.

The time has come for us to stop “recycling” plastic. Plastic as a material is not recyclable, and the very best thing we can do to celebrate Earth Day this year is to acknowledge that fact.

This seems counterintuitive, I know. We’ve been told for decades that the answer to the plastic-waste crisis is more, better recycling: If only we sorted better! If only we had better access to recycling technologies! If only we washed and dried our plastics more adequately! This is all a smokescreen, designed to distract us from the truth that plastic recycling — if by “recycling” we mean converting a used material into a new material of similar value and function — is a myth.

Unlike paper, glass and metal, plastic is not easily, efficiently turned into new products. What passes for “recycling” plastic is costly, energy-intensive and toxic. On top of all that, the process requires the addition of a shocking amount of new virgin plastic — around 70 percent — to hold the newly formed plastic item together. As a result, only about 5 percent of plastic gets “recycled” (or, more accurately, “downcycled” into a product of inferior quality). Compare that with a 68 percent recycling rate for paper and cardboard.

Considering that, as a society, we’ve been actively trying to get better at plastic recycling since the 1970s, 5 percent represents a colossal, unequivocal failure. It tells us that plastic “recycling” is, at heart, an empty, performative gesture.

Many environmentalists will protest this assertion. They might correctly point out that plastics labeled with the resin identification code of 1 or 2 (the number inside the “chasing arrows” triangle on many plastics) have a higher measure of recycling success: about 30 percent . Shouldn’t we support recycling at least this plastic?

For a long time, I thought so.

But this brings us to another myth: that plastic is harmless to human health. What many people do not know is that plastic is made from two ingredients: fossil fuels and toxic chemicals. When we say toxic chemicals, we are talking about some very bad actors: heavy metals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), flame retardants and persistent organic pollutants. Tens of thousands of proprietary chemical formulas are involved in the production of plastic, most of which have never been tested for their effects on human health, although many are known to be endocrine disruptors, fertility inhibitors and carcinogens.

What this means is that even if we were to get better at recycling plastic, we shouldn’t want to. When you grind up, melt and re-form a bunch of plastic (with the addition of lots of new virgin plastic to bind it together), all those thousands of toxic plastic chemicals combine to make a Frankenstein material that has what scientists call “non-intentionally added substances” in it. Which is to say that chemicals that are not supposed to be there start showing up. A study last year concluded that recycled plastics contain “an unknown number of chemical compounds at unknown concentrations.” In 2021, a Canadian study concluded that plastic is “not suitable for processing into food grade PCR,” referring to post-consumer resin.

The upshot? You do not want your food wrapped in recycled, mystery-ingredient plastic.

But what if we use recycled plastic only for nonfood items such as picnic benches? Then we have yet another deeply troubling aspect of plastic to deal with: microplastics. We’ve been hearing more and more about these lately, because scientists are finding them everywhere they look — in the environment and in the human body.

The chemical composition of all plastic — whatever the type — is a synthetic polymer that doesn’t break down or go away, ever. Instead, it breaks up into smaller and smaller pieces until it turns into microplastics or even nanoplastics. These tiny particles are still plastic, still toxic, but now so small that we are eating and breathing them all the time. Microplastics have been discovered in human lungs, bloodstream and breastmilk, as well as in the placenta of unborn babies. Scientists have found microplastics in sperm, testes and the brain.

The effect of all this plastic in our bodies is still being revealed, but we know it is substantial. A recent study concluded that the disease burden from plastic exposure includes preterm birth, obesity, heart disease and cancer, and the health-care cost was $249 billion in 2018 alone. The human body has become the trash can of our plastics-addicted culture.

Trying to recycle plastic makes the microplastics problem even worse. A study of just one plastics recycling facility discovered that it might be washing 3 million pounds of microplastics into its wastewater every year — all of which ends up being deposited in our city water systems or dumped into the environment.

At this very moment, we all have microplastics coursing through our bodies. This is not the fault of not enough recycling. This is the fault of too much plastic. So I say: Let’s treat plastic like the toxic waste it is and send it where it can hurt people the least.

Right now, that place is the landfill.

Then we need to get to work on the real solution: making a whole lot less of it.

At plastics treaty talks in Canada, sharp disagreements on whether to limit plastic production

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Nations made progress on a treaty to end plastic pollution, finishing the latest round of negotiations in Canada early Tuesday amid sharp disagreements about whether to put global limits on plastic production.

For the first time in the process, negotiators discussed the text of what is supposed to become a global treaty. Delegates and observers at the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution called it a welcome sign that talk shifted from ideas to treaty language at this fourth of five scheduled meetings.

Most contentious is the idea of limiting how much plastic is manufactured. That remains in the text over the strong objections of plastic-producing countries and companies and oil and gas exporters. Most plastic is made from fossil fuels and chemicals.

As the Ottawa session ended, the committee agreed to keep working on the treaty before its final meeting later this year in South Korea.

The preparations for that session will focus on how to finance the implementation of the treaty, assess the chemicals of concern in plastic products and look at product design. Rwanda’s representative said negotiators ignored the elephant in the room by not addressing plastic production.

“In the end, this is not just about the text, it’s not just about the process,” said Jyoti Mathur-Filipp, executive secretary of the committee. “It is quite simply about providing a better future for generations and for our loved ones.”

Stewart Harris, an industry spokesperson with the International Council of Chemical Associations, said the members want a treaty that focuses on recycling plastic and reuse, sometimes referred to as “circularity.”

They don’t want a cap on plastic production, and think chemicals should not be regulated through this agreement. Harris said the association was pleased to see governments coming together and agreeing to complete additional work, especially on financing and plastic product design.

Dozens of scientists from the Scientists’ Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty came to the meeting to provide research on plastic pollution to negotiators, in part, they said, to dispel misinformation.

“I heard yesterday that there’s no data on microplastics, which is verifiably false: 21,000 publications on micro and nanoplastics have been published,” said Bethanie Carney Almroth, an ecotoxicology professor at Sweden’s University of Gothenburg who co-leads the coalition. “It’s like Whac-A-Mole.”

She said scientists were being harassed and intimidated by lobbyists and she reported to the U.N. that a lobbyist yelled in her face at a meeting.

Despite their differences, the countries represented share a common vision to move forward in the treaty process, Ecuador’s chief negotiator, Walter Schuldt, said.

“Because at the end of the day, we’re talking about the survival of the future of life, not only of human life but all sorts of life on this planet,” he said in an interview.

The treaty talks began in Uruguay in December 2022 after Rwanda and Peru proposed the resolution that launched the process in March 2022. Progress was slow during Paris talks in May 2023 and in Nairobi in November as countries debated rules for the process.

When thousands of negotiators and observers arrived in Ottawa, Luis Vayas Valdivieso, the committee chair from Ecuador, reminded them of their purpose to deliver a future free of plastic pollution. He asked them to be ambitious.

The delegates have been discussing not only the scope of the treaty, but chemicals of concern, problematic and avoidable plastics, product design, and financing and implementation.

Delegates also streamlined the unwieldy collection of options that emerged from the last meeting.

“We took a major step forward after two years of lots of discussion. Now we have text to negotiate,” said Björn Beeler, international coordinator for the International Pollutants Elimination Network. “Unfortunately, much more political will is needed to address the out of control escalating plastic production.”

Many traveled to Ottawa from communities affected by plastic manufacturing and pollution. Louisiana and Texas residents who live near petrochemical plants and refineries handed out postcards aimed at the U.S. State Department saying, “Wish you were here.”

They traveled together as a group from the Break Free From Plastic movement, and asked negotiators to visit their states to experience the air and water pollution firsthand.

“This is still the best option we have to see change in our communities. They’re so captured by corporations. I can’t go to the parish government,” said Jo Banner, of the St. John the Baptist Parish in Louisiana. “It feels this is the only chance and hope I have of helping my community repair from this, to heal.”

Members of an Indigenous Peoples’ Caucus held a news conference Saturday to say microplastics are contaminating their food supply and the pollution threatens their communities and ways of life guaranteed to them in perpetuity. They felt their voices weren’t being heard.

OTTAWA, Ontario  — For the first time, negotiators from most of the world’s nations are discussing the text of what is supposed to become a global treaty to end plastic pollution.

Delegates and observers at the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution called it a welcome sign that talk has shifted from ideas to treaty language at this fourth of five scheduled plastics summits.

Most contentious is the idea of limiting how much plastic is manufactured globally. Currently, that remains in the text over the strong objections of plastic-producing countries and companies and oil and gas exporters. Most plastic is made from fossil fuels and chemicals.

The Ottawa session was scheduled to end late Monday or early Tuesday. On Monday night there could sharp discussion over whether this question of plastic production is a focus for working groups before the next and final meeting.

Stewart Harris, an industry spokesperson with the International Council of Chemical Associations, said the members want a treaty that focuses on recycling plastic and reuse, sometimes referred to as “circularity.”

“We want to see the treaty completed,” Harris said. “We want to work with the governments on implementing it. The private sector has a role to play.” Advertisement

Dozens of scientists from the Scientists’ Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty came to the meeting to provide scientific evidence on plastic pollution to negotiators, in part, they said, to dispel misinformation.

“I heard yesterday that there’s no data on microplastics, which is verifiably false: 21,000 publications on micro and nanoplastics have been published,” said Bethanie Carney Almroth, an ecotoxicology professor at Sweden’s University of Gothenburg who co-leads the coalition. “It’s like Whac-A-Mole.”

She said scientists were being harassed and intimidated by lobbyists and she reported to the U.N. that a lobbyist yelled in her face at a meeting.

Despite their differences, the countries represented share a common vision to move forward in the treaty process, Ecuador’s chief negotiator, Walter Schuldt said.

“Because at the end of the day, we’re talking about the survival of the future of life, not only of human life but all sorts of life on this planet,” he said in an interview.

He said he was proud to participate, to contribute his “grain of sand” to global action to address an environmental crisis. Advertisement

Negotiators aim to conclude a treaty by the end of 2024. Topics assigned to expert working groups by tonight will advance into the final round of talks in the fall in South Korea.

Without this preparation work between meetings, it would be daunting to complete the negotiations this year. Multiple countries said Sunday night they’re committed to working in between meetings.

The treaty talks began in Uruguay in December 2022 after Rwanda and Peru proposed the resolution that launched the process in March 2022 .

Progress was slow during Paris talks in May 2023 and in Nairobi in November as countries debated rules for the process.

When thousands of negotiators and observers arrived in Ottawa, Luis Vayas Valdivieso, the committee chair from Ecuador, reminded them of their purpose, asking them to be ambitious.

“The world is counting on us to deliver a new treaty that will catalyze and guide the actions, and international cooperation needed to deliver a future free of plastic pollution,” he said. “Let us not fail them.” Advertisement

The delegates have been discussing not only the scope of the treaty, but chemicals of concern, problematic and avoidable plastics, product design, and financing and implementation.

Delegates also streamlined the unwieldy collection of options that emerged from the last meeting.

Many traveled to Ottawa from communities affected by plastic manufacturing and pollution. Louisiana and Texas residents who live near petrochemical plants and refineries handed out postcards aimed at the U.S. State Department saying, “Wish you were here.”

They traveled together as a group from the Break Free From Plastic movement, and asked negotiators to visit their states to experience the air and water pollution firsthand.

“This is still the best option we have to see change in our communities. They’re so captured by corporations. I can’t go to the parish government,” said Jo Banner, of the St. John the Baptist Parish in Louisiana. “It feels this is the only chance and hope I have of helping my community repair from this, to heal.”

No Jerry Seinfeld, the ‘extreme left’ hasn’t killed comedy

The comedian’s claim that wokeness is the reason why comedy is no longer as funny is lazy – and inaccurate

J erry Seinfeld is currently at saturation point, promoting his new Pop Tarts movie Unfrosted . Still a canny operator, however, Seinfeld understands that the last thing anyone in the world wants to hear about is his new Pop Tarts movie. After all, there is realistically only so much available media interest in a streaming period comedy film about a breakfast product. And so Unfrosted has taken something of a backseat to a much more newsworthy proposition: Jerry Seinfeld mouthing off for clicks.

Until now, Seinfeld’s targets have included the film industry (the people he worked with “don’t have any idea that the movie business is over”) and his disdain for dabblers (“There’s nothing I revile quite as much as a dilettante”), despite being a man who has just directed his first film at the age of 70. True, he has also tried talking about things he actually enjoys, like his love of watching surfing videos on YouTube, but that isn’t really what gets the clicks these days. And so, with some inevitability, Jerry Seinfeld has pulled out the big guns and declared that the left is destroying comedy.

Speaking on the New Yorker’s Radio Hour , Seinfeld said: “Nothing really affects comedy. People always need it. They need it so badly and they don’t get it. It used to be that you’d go home at the end of the day, most people would go ‘Oh, Cheers is on. Oh, M*A*S*H is on. Oh, Mary Tyler Moore is on. All in the Family is on.’ You just expected [there will] be some funny stuff we can watch on TV tonight. Well guess what? Where is it? Where is it?”

Which isn’t entirely true – Curb Your Enthusiasm just wrapped up its 25-year-run with a universally beloved episode that Jerry Seinfeld was actually in – but it’s broadly valid. Despite the glut of streaming services that now run in addition to the major networks, a smaller and smaller percentage of their output is comedic in nature. One answer might be that people are turning online for faster, funnier, cheaper comedy that appeals directly to their tastes. But Jerry Seinfeld has other ideas.

“This is the result of the extreme left and PC crap and people worrying so much about offending other people,” he explained, going on to state: “When you write a script, and it goes into four or five different hands, committees, groups – ‘Here’s our thought about this joke’ – well, that’s the end of your comedy.”

The problem seems to be that too many people delight in performative outrage these days, and a well-intentioned joke might end up being taken out of context and being escalated to a cancelation-level event. Luckily, the extreme left wasn’t a thing back in Seinfeld’s day, which is why something as famously edgy as – let’s see – Cheers was able to stay on air for as long as it did.

On the surface, this is an incredibly dreary thing to say, not least because it doesn’t fit Seinfeld as a performer at all. It’s hard to complain that you’re not allowed to offend anybody any more when your stock in trade is deliberately inoffensive comedy. Jerry Seinfeld is a man who has just made a film about some pastry. Unless all the clips and trailers have done a particularly good job of hiding a scene in which one character looks straight to camera and declares that all trans people are an affront to God, Unfrosted probably isn’t going to appall the delicate sensibilities of very many people at all.

This is a man, remember, who is proud of his family friendly image. The 2011 HBO special Talking Funny has aged incredibly badly – it’s a roundtable discussion of comedy that features both Louis CK and Ricky Gervais – but Seinfeld’s contributions hold up. During his discussion, he defends his decision never to swear onstage, insinuating that it’s an easy way to get laughs. It’s a subject he followed up on a few years later, telling the Guardian: “A person who can defend themselves with a gun is just not very interesting. But a person who defends themselves through aikido or tai chi? Very interesting.”

And let’s not forget that, when Seinfeld’s co-star Michael Richards ended his career with a racist rant onstage, Jerry Seinfeld not only brought him on Letterman to explain himself, but treated the incident with such grave intent that at one point he sincerely ordered the studio audience to stop laughing, telling them: “It’s not funny.”

So there have always been gatekeepers to what is and isn’t funny. Indeed, in his own work Jerry Seinfeld has been one of the staunchest gatekeepers of all. Perhaps the problem here isn’t that the extreme left has a stranglehold on comedy. Perhaps it’s just that Jerry Seinfeld is getting old.

Skepticism Is Healthy, but in Medicine, It Can Be Dangerous

I arrived at the hospital one recent morning to find a team of doctors gathered just outside a patient room. The patient was struggling — his breaths too fast and too shallow. For days we had been trying to walk the line between treating the pain caused by his rapidly growing cancer and prolonging his life.

Overnight he had worsened. His family, wrestling with the inevitability of his death, had come to a tentative plan, and I needed to make sure that his wife understood what was ahead. I explained that if we inserted a breathing tube, as she had decided overnight, her husband would be sedated. When the rest of their family arrived in Boston, we would take out the tube and he would die. We would not be able to wake him up — to do so would only cause him to suffer.

At this, his wife stiffened. Why wouldn’t he be able to wake up? I explained that his cancer was so advanced that to wake him would be to give him the conscious awareness of drowning. I watched as she took me in, this doctor she had never met before, telling her something she did not want to hear. Her expression shifted. “Why should I believe you?” she asked me. And then, her voice toughening: “I don’t think that I do.”

The room was silent. My patient’s wife looked into her bag, rooting around for a tissue. I glanced down at my feet. Why should she believe me? I was wearing sneakers with my scrub pants, and I found myself wondering whether she would have trusted me without question if I appeared more professional, or if I were older or male. Perhaps, but there was so much more at play in that moment. This was not just about one doctor and one family member, but instead, about a public for whom the medical system is no longer an institution to be trusted.

We are at a crossroads in medicine when it comes to public trust. After a pandemic that twisted science for political gain, it is not surprising that confidence in medicine is eroding. In fact, trust in medical scientists has fallen to its lowest levels since January 2019. As a result, more people are seeking out less conventional voices of “authority” that hew closer to their beliefs. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a longtime vaccine skeptic campaigning for the presidency, is finding double-digit support in some polls and has made medical freedom a recurring theme of his candidacy.

But our medical system relies on trust — in face-to-face meetings as well as public health bulletins. Distrust can lead doctors to burnout and can encourage avoidable negative outcomes for our patients. This is partly what is driving increasing rates of measles among unvaccinated children , failure to follow recommended cancer screening and refusal to take lifesaving preventive medications . There are no easy solutions here. But if we do not find ways to restore and strengthen trust with our patients, more lives will be lost.

This is relatively new terrain for American physicians. When I was in medical training, we did not talk much about trust. During my early years as a doctor, I barely trusted myself and in fact felt uncomfortable with the responsibility I had to keep my patients alive. Only recently have I found myself thinking about what happens when this ephemeral ingredient in the doctor-patient relationship is lost.

Medical skepticism is not the same as medical nihilism. The data behind the drugs doctors prescribe and the decisions we make need not be the purview of us alone; the public has the right to review the numbers and to make their own decisions about risk and benefit. But when that skepticism shifts into abject and irreparable disbelief, we see some patients make dangerous decisions. And when doctors respond with frustration, that only further separates us from those patients.

Trust can sometimes be repaired by clearly presenting facts and figures, but it is about more than explaining numbers. We tell patients things about the body that are unseen. We recommend lifestyle changes and medication to treat or to prevent problems that may not be felt. Surgeons refer to a profound version of trust called the surgical contract: the idea that when people go under the knife, they are allowing their surgeon to make them sicker — to cut them open — in order to make them better. That trust must be earned.

In emergencies, patients don’t have the luxury to choose whom to trust, and medical decisions must happen hastily, in minutes even. So part of our job is to build rapport quickly. That becomes harder, impossible even, when we enter into the climax of a medical crisis to find that whatever trust our patient may have once had long ago has been eroded. Many of our patients started their medical journeys wanting to believe in their doctors. But then the medical system that they wanted to trust failed them, in small ways and large, from haphazardly rescheduled appointments to real medical error. How do we begin the process of repair, both as a profession and as individuals, when time is short?

In medicine, we talk about the idea of shared decision-making, in which medical decisions are arrived at jointly by doctor and patient, in contrast to the paternalistic tone of years gone by. As doctors, we do not tell our patients what to do — instead we offer them the information necessary for them to choose the path that is right for them.

For all our training, our medical knowledge is useless if our patients are unwilling or unable to believe what we have to offer. And that isn’t a fault of our patients, no matter how bothered we might become. This is a fault of a system that does not deserve our patients’ blind faith, of a surrounding political milieu that has turned scientific fact into fiction in many people’s minds.

That is how I found myself in that room, early that one morning, with my patient’s wife, her disbelief and the weight of the decision hanging between us. I knew so little about her. I did not know her history or her interactions with the medical system. I did not know the story of her husband’s diagnosis and treatment, or whether he had struggled to find care for his cancer. In our fractured system, I was just meeting her that day. I had no way to make her trust me, except to sit with her, to give her what little time with her husband we could. And to hope that regardless of what came before, she would choose to believe what I was telling her.

I am not certain what she believed, but she chose against intubation. Her husband lived until the rest of his family came anyway. And when he died, they left without a word, carrying with them his bags of belongings and — I can only hope — faith that we had done the best we could.
