Chup Review: Dulquer Salmaan Carries The Film, Sunny Deol Delivers A Star Turn
Chup review: that it ventures into uncharted territory is undeniably commendable. but it needed something more to elevate itself above a mere idiosyncratic concept..

Rating: 2 stars (out of 5)
Every filmmaker isn't an artist. Neither is every film a work of art. Similarly, not every movie reviewer is a film critic. Chup - Revenge of the Artist - ignores these distinctions between the magical and the humdrum to craft a thriller about a serial killer who believes criticism is evil and targets film critics for their opinions.
The technical attributes of the film - the camerawork and the lighting, the editing, the soundscape and the production design - are perfectly orchestrated to create an air of foreboding. They yield the desired results. Sadly, most of it lingers on the surface, leaving the heart of the plot rather soulless and incapable of triggering emotions any stronger than mild repulsion at the graphic and gory killings by a deranged man.
A mild-mannered Bandra florist Danny (Dulquer Salmaan), an enthusiastic rookie reporter Nila Menon (Shreya Dhanwanthary), a hardened police investigator Arvind Mathur (Sunny Deol) and a business-like criminal psychologist Zenobia Shroff (Pooja Bhatt) serve as the four pillars on which the screenplay, written by Balki with film reviewer Raja Sen and Rishi Virmani, stands. And then there is Guru Dutt. More on him later.
The 135-minute film opens with the gruesome killing of a veteran film critic, found bloodied in the loo of his own apartment. Before the halfway mark, three other murders of middle-aged men - yes, only men - from the same fraternity rock the city. In the course of the fourth kill - an art gallery is the site of the crime - the identity of the killer is revealed.
Leading up to this point, the film provides other visual clues for the audience to be able to guess who the serial killer is. The mystery surrounding the gruesome murders does not take firm roots because Chup goes back and forth between the who/why-dunnit and a blossoming romance between a lonesome flower seller and a young woman who has only just moved to Mumbai to further her journalistic prospects.
Post-interval, both the police and the audience anticipate another murder but what we get is a tame cat-and-mouse game involving a decoy critic and a fake negative review of a widely loved film. It ends with evocatively lit sequences that pay tribute to both Guru Dutt and his storied cinematographer V.K. Murthy, with replications of folkloric visual compositions from two of the duo's most celebrated collaborations - Pyaasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool .
Not only are these two films frequently evoked either directly and through their timeless songs, a couple of the murders are staged with the haunting SD Burman-composed numbers playing on the background. Never before have the sounds of Guru Dutt's two classic films accompanied the spilling of blood on the big screen.
Original, audacious, godawful - call them what you will, these moments are among the more memorable ones in a film that seems to take itself far too seriously for its own good. Largely devoid of humour, Chup could have used some darkly comic touches to go with its twisted plot.
What the unusual premise lacks, therefore, are a few additional layers that could have helped it transcend the superficial binary of good and bad, appreciative and harsh critiques.
Chup hinges on the inference that Guru Dutt was pushed to an untimely death by the fact that critics pilloried Kaagaz Ke Phool , a deeply personal essay that enumerated the struggles of being a filmmaker in a highly commercialised industry. Much is also made of the fact that the film in question is today universally regarded as a masterpiece. The first supposition is specious, the second is spot-on.
The history of art and literature - and cinema, too - abounds in instances of works that were trashed at the time of their appearance but then went on to grow in value and influence with the passage of time. Indeed, the value of art is rarely determined by instant critical approval (this can only gurantee immediate material gains) but by its capacity for longevity as a cultural artefact. In fact, somebody in Chup acknowledges that Kaagaz Ke Phool was a film way ahead of its time.
So what, pray, is the big deal? Well, Chup ties itself up in knots in trying to find a rationale for the actions of the killer, laboriously delving into the character's past and the long-term impact it has had on his mind and heart. Too pat, too casual, too bereft of imagination. Not something Guru Dutt would be proud of.
Geeta Dutt's ethereal voice comes in handy every time Danny and Nila meet. A chance meeting - looking for flowers for her visually impaired mother, Nila finds that Danny grows tulips - a rarity of rarities in Mumbai - in his backyard. Tulips and Geeta Dutt in a 2022 Hindi movie! Wow, talk of method in the madness.
In a way, Chup has the feel of an extended cinematic exercise by a troll intent on showing film critics their place in the food chain. It errs in suggesting that those that pass judgement on cinema for a living - the film gets Amitabh Bachchan (playing himself) to assert that cinema needs critics for its growth - wield the power to make or break the fate of a film.
They definitely don't in the case of movies that have a life beyond instant reviews either because the star power that drives them is too immense to be affected by criticism or owing to the sheer purity of the art inherent in it. The latter was true of Kaagaz Ke Phool , an ambitious leap of artistic faith that sank not because it fell short, but because in 1959 neither critics nor audiences were ready for it.
One performance that stands out in Chup is Shreya Dhanwanthary's. She fleshes out a film-loving journo who dares to put her life on the line to achieve her goal and literally at that (like filmmakers of the ilk of Guru Dutt, Ritwik Ghatak and John Abraham did), and gets the nuances right.
Dulquer Salmaan, as always, oozes easy-going charm. If only he went just a tad easier on that aspect of his personality, he would have done more justice to the wide range of emotions that he is required to pack into the performance. Be that as it may, he carries the film on shoulders with aplomb.

Sunny Deol delivers a restrained star turn that goes slightly off-track in the climactic passages. Pooja Bhatt does enough to leave you wondering why more of her character wasn't written into the film.
Chup is a muddle but certainly not of monumental proportions. That it ventures into uncharted territory is undeniably commendable. But it needed something more to elevate itself above a mere idiosyncratic concept.

Chup review: Dulquer Salmaan gets a perfect score for bringing his A-game in R Balki's gory thriller
One cannot deny the fact that Chup: Revenge of the Artist is flawed, but R. Balki's charm with his work is undeniable and crisp.

The story of Chup is about a psychopath killer who preys on movie critics. Mumbai is being rocked by a string of strange and disturbing murders. Every new film's release results in the weekly murder of cinema critics. In charge of the Mumbai Crime Branch, Arvind Mathur (Sunny Deol) has a case to solve. He tries to grasp the killer's thoughts in order to catch him with the aid of Zenobia (Pooja Bhatt), a criminal psychologist.
" Jane Kya Tune Kahi " is a romantic song from Pyaasa (1957) that is constantly played in Chup: Revenge of the Artist . The track shows an aloof Guru Dutt looking at a joyous Waheeda Rehman (sung by Geeta Dutt) while she sings her heart out. However, in the film, the song, even though it comes during a romantic sequence, is also an indication to the masses about how a filmmaker speaks about a film and how the audience/critics take it.
Chup starts off in the most thrilling way, and we just have to be prepared to see how one can be murdered in the goriest way. The first killing shows that the film is going to leave you on the edge of your seat, and there's no way you can turn around now.
R. Balki, the filmmaker, is known to bring twisted plots that are true to nature and execute them in the most entertaining way. We have seen him do that with Cheeni Kum, Paa, Ki & Ka , and more. Here, in Chup , he attempts something heinous that we have not seen before: a serial killer who is slashing film critics and marking their foreheads with stars.

The assignment is understood and the execution takes the plunge in the right way. We've become accustomed to the gruesome visuals that cinema has reserved in every way thanks to the era of OTT, with less regulation. But with Chup , we just can't deal with it right then and there while preparing how the next murder will be performed.
The psychopath's nature is shown through patterns, such as taking a paragraph out of a review and performing the murder in exactly the same way. "Bang on with that execution!"
I, still being an amateur critic, was dreading how to perceive this film, with fear or just as another piece of art and a filmmaker's labour of love.
Chup is a film that pays homage to cinephiles who live, breathe, and sleep cinema. Their lives revolve around giving references to movies every now and then, watching movies, and even getting their hearts broken when movies fail to impress. The film shows all kinds of critics, from the world of print to videos; some are genuine, while others are paid. So how does the killer decide on his next target? He is such a film buff that he has not only seen Indian films but has also been exposed to global culture.
The psyche of the serial killer is kind of convenient, but hey, mental illness cannot be put into a box and the motive cannot be always justified. A movie lover can take cues from any of the films he has watched over the years or cook up a mission that looks like a perfect script to be made into a movie or a series in the future.

There's no intended cat-and-mouse chase between Sunny Deol's character as investigating officer Arvind Mathur and the serial killer. But as the story unfolds, the pattern looks very interesting, so to speak.
On one hand, Deol's character is solving this man, who is making the world of movies a slaughterhouse with the killings of film critics. On the other hand, there's a love story brewing between Danny (Dulquer Salmaan), the owner of a flower shop, and an entertainment reporter, Nila Menon (Shreya Dhanwanthary).
Their love story in the first half gives another mysterious angle on how it's related to the serial killer. The first half thus runs parallelly well and leaves you intrigued. However, in the second half, the romantic angle doesn't help much with the story and makes you impatient to know about the hunt for the serial killer.
As mentioned earlier, Jane Kya Tune Kahi 's context in this film. Another beautiful song, Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam from Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), is also a kind of metaphor for Chup . We saw Guru Dutt never direct a film after Kaagaz Ke Phool , knowing how the film was heavily criticised for its content. He died just a few years after the release of the film. But now, times have changed, and the criticism has become harsher with the rise of social media too.
These metaphors work beautifully with Chup , as Guru Dutt is remembered with utmost respect and regret that he didn't get his due for his contribution to Indian cinema when he was alive.
However, a little criticism of Chup would indeed be a matter of convenience. The film slightly loses logic and seems fictitious in terms of giving the benefit of the doubt to the plot. It thickens once Zenobia (Pooja Bhatt), a criminal psychologist, comes into the picture. Her way of showing the "pattern" of the serial killer is kind of a known fact but is shown as a shocking twist in the film.
When it comes to performances, Chup is an out-and-out Dulquer Salmaan show. The actor is terrific in every scene, and you can't take your eyes off him. Knowing his body of work in the past decade, the actor has shown every shade in the films he has starred in, irrespective of the language. But the way Balki oozes out the more hidden talent he has is incredible to watch.
Sunny Deol as a cop is brilliant and brings back the charm he had with his performances in Damini, Ghayal, Ghatak and more. The one scene where he jumps off from the top floor and limps while he walks shows that he has aged but will never be less than the action hero he has been.
Pooja Bhatt's presence in the second half is just fabulous and proves how she has always been a talented actor. She deserves to be on screen more often.
Shreya Dhanwanthary looks promising with the way her character starts. But it just doesn't gel well as the film shapes up. The actor feels like a love interest who does have a role to play in the climax, but it is less impactful.
Saranya Ponvannan as the visually impaired mother of Shreya's character is just picture-perfect. She is the kind of millennial mother one would root for and want in their lives.
The music, which is a blend of the old-world charm of tracks from Guru Dutt movies composed by SD Burman and a modern twist by Amit Trivedi and Sneha Khanwalkar, sets Chup apart from the rest of the serial killer movies. Even the background score by Aman Pant is top-notch, which sets the thrilling pace just right. Even the constant sounds of crickets fit in perfectly between the songs.
Chup is a brave attempt by Balki in every sense, which he penned with former critic Raja Sen and Rishi Virmani. Brave for taking on a subject that no one had considered, braver for carrying it out by demonstrating how a film can be gory and uncomfortable to watch, and bravest for pulling off such a casting coup that will be remembered for a long time.
Chup: Revenge of the Artist has one scene which shows a poster saying "Woody Allen is innocent," which is equally disturbing to be present at a woman's house. That's another metaphor for how the film is designed to be. Moreover, Dulquer Salmaan takes the cake that Balki bakes and decorates it with a sharp icing.

Chup Movie Review: R. Balki’s Love Letter To Cinema & Guru Dutt Is A Winsome Wild Idea With A Lot Of Merits
In chup, you must surrender to an idea that is untouched and brilliant..
Star Cast: Dulquer Salmaan, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Pooja Bhatt, Sunny Deol & Ensemble.
Director: R. Balki
What’s Good: An untouched idea, Balki’s love for cinema, Dulquer’s approach, and of course the ode to the legend that deserved much more, Guru Dutt.
What’s Bad: Baring the few convenient decisions, there is nothing that should stop you from watching this fresh idea that is supremely unexplored in cinema.
Loo Break: If your bladder can wait, Balki has an amazing story to tell, if not there is a predictable chunk, and you will know.
Watch or Not?: You should, for the sake of a filmmaker and his team trying to bring a virgin concept amid the gazillion remakes we are subjected to. Support an intelligent immersive idea, this might greenlight many more to come.
Language: Hindi (with subtitles).
Available On: Theatrical release
Runtime: 135 Minutes.
I am writing a review in an almost empty local train at around 12:00 am about a psychopath serial killer set loose and is targeting film critics who give inappropriate ratings to movies opposite to the merit of the product. The police are chasing him but he is always a step ahead. No stress readers, I am alive! (wink wink).
Chup Movie Review: Script Analysis
Confession before I begin my job that of a ‘critic’, I am a self-proclaimed top order Guru Dutt fan who dreams he could travel time and just witness the magic of his existence live. So you know this movie is partly personal to me. Now the critic takes over.
R. Balki represents a brand in cinema that looks at the world around us in different dynamics. His stories are about the absurdity in the normal and the gaze that makes it absurd in the first place. Be it Cheeni Kum, Paa, Shamitabh, or Ki & Ka. Even when they don’t land where they are supposed to, they kick-start a conversation and a constructive one to take the thinking of its viewer a step ahead. If not anything, one must appreciate his gest to be original and bring to us some fresh content.
The filmmaker with his co-writers Raja Sen (a celebrated film critic) and Rishi Virmani now enters the what if?.. zone and creates a story that delves into virgin lands and one that is so delicate that one wrong step and the entire castle crashes down in a blink. There is an actor-filmmaker who was shunned back in the time (Dutt), a self-proclaimed successor plans to take revenge for the wrong done to his idol, and for that, he kills the clan responsible. You know the thin line I am talking about now.
But Balki doesn’t fear to go to the most absurd of the turns and create a story that is so immersive that you start to ignore the little flaws. In their writing, the three shape the movie as an ode, a love letter to cinema, and one of its biggest legends Guru Dutt, a man not celebrated enough when alive. There is also angst that fuels not just the protagonist, but the viewer as well. There’s a fan who seeks justice and knows no court will grant him that and takes the law into his hands.
Now, this fan is not an aimless, jobless youth who just gets on to it, but a man who has lived abuse and childhood of trauma himself. He lives with not one but two personalities and his head is a constant box of convoluted voices. In his most difficult times, cinema gave him hope and specifically Guru Dutt. So if the world insults his refuge, it is his insult. Look at it like yourself and confess the number of times you took refuge under the colorful umbrella of cinema. Can you hear anything bad about those films easily? The makers give that same emotion a wild take and it works just right. Balki wins the show when he decides to give an epilogue in the last 10 minutes and bring two lives a full circle.
Chup is about a legend whose cinema spoke of the world and what it consists of, good bad, and ugly. So does Balki’s writing that tries to capture it all. But while all of it works, there are also convenient steps that he takes to jump to the next scenes. You can see how everything is served easily nearby so the script can progress towards the more lucrative conflict and that is indeed a problem.
Also, the writers do try to bring in fresh romance around flowers but are also real to the time it is set in. The girlfriend tells the boyfriend that she cannot have s*x on a certain day because she has her periods. It’s a blink-and-miss scene but talks about the authentic approach in volumes. But this same love story is supremely ignored in the second half only to bring it back by the end. And that does serve has a roadblock.
Chup Movie Review: Star Performance
Dulquer Salmaan is definitely here to stay and rule industries regardless of languages. In his portrayal of a man with a mental disorder, his approach is subtle and not overtly dramatic. It is his performance that brings the ‘real’ vibe to a world that is highly fictional and borderline demands a lot of suspension of disbelief. Writers and actors, here’s your reference for how to balance a movie.
Shreya Dhanwanthary plays an entertainment journalist and is limited to that part. Of course she is the love interest and does more than just being a journalist, but not enough to root for her. She does an amazing job and she is an actor who can make you root for her, but that are her capabilities, that doesn’t mean the script should heavily rely just on her.
Sunny Deol is a treat here, you guys. Just like the hand pump he gets to jump across two walls while he could have taken the stairs, but I bought it because so much fun! I would have been disappointed if there was no such moment between a performance that is rightfully restricted and seasoned with mean one-liners.
Pooja Bhatt in an extended cameo is Pooja Bhatt and I like to see her onscreen. Also can we please have more of Saranya Ponvannan and the flamboyance she brings to the story. A blind single mother, who is obsessed with films, so much that she stays near the Mehboob studio and is a heroine in her own film in her head. Such a fun character and a fresh approach
Chup Movie Review: Direction, Music
R. Balki as a director shapes this movie like the films that tell you the story and unravel the most important part in a monologue. He also treats it as a meta story that takes elements from the real life, his opinion and conversations. Like a wall has a ‘Woody Allen Is Innocent’ frame, or a critic saying the government has security for zillion MPs but not for them. You know that it is about the world you are living in and not just a fictional movie.
It helps because it gives a big perspective to an already immersive story. While worshipping cinema and Guru Dutt, he even pays an ode to Mumbai and its cinematic glory. In a beautifully shot song, locations, and mentions. There is love in everything he does and it shows.
Vishal Sinha’s frames help him do so as he captures the scenes thinking how Guru Dutt could have and even some that resemble his style. The top shots and close frames especially. The homage in the climax is a frame that will be remembered and I am not spoiling that for you.
Aman Pant’s music is soothing and haunting at the same time. The rendition of Yeh Duniya Agar is so moving and alarming that Sahir Ludhianvi’s words from almost 65 years ago still feel relevant and touch the right chord. The use of the old classic songs to create fear is also a good technique and works. Amit Trivedi’s Gaya Gaya adds poetry to the romance that is doomed from the word go.
Chup Movie Review: The Last Word
Chup comes from a team that immensely loves cinema and everything it represents, you must surrender to an idea that is untouched and brilliant. With some minor flaws, you should not miss watching his ode which is more than just a movie about a killer on loose.

This movie started off excellently but very soon meandered off to countless, senseless, illogical and time wasting romantic meetings between a couple.Ordinarily in a romance based film this would have made sense but not in a movie where there is a continuous search for a serial killer.Too much time was yet again wasted on Guru Dutt and us the viewers having to watch his black and white movie Kaagaz Ke Phool, released 63 years ago. The only saving grace was Sunny Deol’s composed and restrained performance in his limited role and so only because of him I am giving 1/10 to this massive disappointment! In the film the villain rolls his victim in a comforter&throws her out of the window with such absolute precision that it lands just over the fence just onto the pavement away from the policemen’s eyes. One film critic described this lunacy as the highlight of the film.ABS.TRASH👎🏽 1/10

Chup movie review: The mix of menace and romance starts and stays uneasy
Chup movie review: this dulquer salmaan film, about dream-makers and those who destroy those dreams, is less satisfactory than it should have been..
Full marks to the originality of the Chup Revenge of the Artist’s story: there’s a serial killer on the loose in Mumbai, whose target is film critics. Oooh, shiver me timbers. It’s the kind of thought which I’m sure must have come to so many filmmakers not just in the Bay, but in film-making centres around the world, basically wherever the creators of cinema feel done against by callous critics being stingy with their stars, and generous with their criticism.
One after the other, Mumbai Police led by Inspector Arvind Mathur ( Sunny Deol ) finds brutally murdered bodies, and gets down to looking for the perpetrator who seems to have an insatiable appetite for blood. Meanwhile, a love story is unfolding between scruffily good-looking florist Danny ( Dulquer Salmaan ) and newbie journalist Nila (Shreya Dhanwantry), who is tired of her entertainment beat — yeh stars kya khaate hain, kya pehente hain — and is dying to become a film critic.
Well, not dying exactly, pardon me, because that’s what the petrified bunch of Mumbai critics do not want. Of course not. Who wants to risk their lives for a review? As the body count rises, a psychologist (Pooja Bhatt) is summoned. Declaring that most serial killers are male, she promptly discovers a pattern, and the hunt is on.
The trouble with Chup (yikes, am I actually saying this) is that while I smiled at the outlandishness of the plot, it was not as successful in making me suspend my disbelief: the characters seem out of a fantasy, set in the bylanes of Bollywood-drenched Bandra, and if that were the intention, this one needed more heft. The best fantasies have to be grounded, and this conceit never feels weighty enough.
At one point, the back-and-forth-cuts between the murders and the swoony lovers are too staccato. You want the film to breathe, which it does when the twosome is tripping the light fantastic: the thing between Danny and Nila (clever name for a movie-mad girl, meaning moon in Tamil), is winsome. The writing credits are split between R Balki, Rishi Virmani and film critic Raja Sen, and you immediately want to know from the latter: Freudian much?
You wish there were more of these bits, when ‘Chup’ feels like a love letter to the movies, and to Mumbai: the reverential references to Guru Dutt and his films, especially ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’, which was trashed by the critics, and is now considered a classic, counterpoints the killer’s hatred for this bunch. But then it goes right back to the toothless blood and gore, the intrigue dissipates; smart viewers will spot the killer soon enough.
Good to see Sunny Deol back in the movies; Bhatt’s cameo is fun. Dulquer Salmaan is nicely loosey-goosey, and Dhanwantry is lovely: she’s played a journalist before, in ‘Scam 92,’ but here she makes her Nila different, armed with a light-on-her-feet-mum (Ponnavanan). But the mix of menace and romance starts and stays uneasy, and ultimately makes the film, about dream-makers and those who destroy those dreams, less satisfactory than it should have been. Am I supposed to take this seriously, or laugh it off? Ultimately, it comes down to this: do you really believe that film critics have the power to kill movies? Especially in this digital day and age, when everyone is a critic, not just professional ones? It’s also true that good films always find their audience, but do bad movies deserve to die unsung? Towards the end, a character says : a film works because of word-of-mouth, not critics, and that straightaway undercuts the film’s premise. If indeed critics these days have less influence than doltish trolls, why take the trouble to go after them in the first place?
There, I’ve said it: will I still be alive tomorrow?

Chup Review: Film Critics Are In Danger!
Article by Cinephile Published by GulteDesk --> Published on: 12:50 pm, 21 September 2022
Direcor : R. Balki Producers : Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Jayantilal Gada, Anil Naidu, Gauri Shinde Cast : Sunny Deol, Dulquer Salmaan, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Pooja Bhatt Music : Aman Pant Banner : Hope Production Release Date: 23 Sep 2022
R. Balki always comes up with films with interesting premises. Paa, Shamitabh and Ki&Ka are such films which had interesting storylines. Now, he came up with another film with an intriguing plot point. Titled Chup, this movie features Dulquer Salmaan, Sunny Deol, Shreya Dhanwantary and Pooja Bhatt in the lead roles. Let’s see how this film turned out to be:
Chup is basically an investigative thriller. The city of Mumbai is shaken by the sudden deaths of film critics. Crime Branch Cop Aravind Mathur (Sunny Deol) gets appointed to investigate the case. He starts digging into the details of these serial killings of critics. There is a parallel romantic track running between florist Danny (Dulquer Salmaan) and journalist Nila Menon (Shreya Dhanwantary). Eventually, the couple gets connected to these serial killings. What happens next forms the major crux of the film.
First of all, there is no movie that deals with the serial killings of film critics. Balki impresses us right away with his story idea. He opens the film very well, with the murder of a film critic. Thus, we get introduced to the story within five minutes of the film. The investigation begins right from the second scene. Balki cleverly takes satirical digs at film critics with his witty one-liners. Dulquer Salmaan gets introduced as a florist and a fan of legendary filmmaker/actor Guru Dutt. The way Balki used Dutt’s references in this movie is highly appreciable.
Dulquer gets into the skin of his character and delivers a power-packed performance. This can go down as one of his best works. It is good to see him choosing varied subjects like Sita Ramam and Chup and making sure to give stunning performances. Sunny Deol impresses as a tough cop. He is a perfect fit for that character. Shreya Dhanwantary gets an author-backed role and she delivers a neat performance. It is high time for filmmakers to shift her from the OTT arena to the movie arena. Pooja Bhatt impresses in an extended cameo. It is good to see Sunny and Pooja sharing the screen after decades.
Chup is technically sound as well. The signature background score used in the movie complements the tone of the film very well. The way Guru Dutt’s songs are used is also very good. The cinematography brings that mysterious tone to the flick. The editing is neatly done and the film is crisp at a runtime of 135 minutes.
Chup starts off very well and makes us hooked to the seats right from the beginning. We keep guessing about the serial killer throughout the first half. Towards the end of the first half, the identity of the killer is revealed. The second half is all about how cops managed to catch up. There are many creative liberties taken in the latter half. Thus, it becomes a letdown. Otherwise, Chup is a decent film and one of the good Bollywood films in 2022.
Dulquer’s performance
Performances of the rest of the lead actors
Interesting storyline
Background score
Thumbs Down:
Last half an hour
Creative liberties were taken toward the climax
Bottom-line: On the whole, Chup is an interesting investigative thriller which has its ‘heart at the right place’ in the first half and goes ‘off-the-track’ in the final act. You can give it a watch for Dulquer’s sensational performance.
Note: This review is an individual opinion from the Chup public Free view show happened on 20th September.

(Chup Telugu Review )?

CHUP Movie Review..
Worth to Watch.

Chup First Review: Mahesh Bhatt Calls Dulquer Salmaan-Sunny Deol Starrer 'Balki's Best Film'
After Akshay Kumar's 2018 film PadMan , R Balki's next is a psychological romantic thriller titled Chup: Revenge Of The Artist. The film which is scheduled to hit the big screens this Friday (September 23), features Sunny Deol, Dulquer Salmaan, Pooja Bhatt and Shreya Dhawanthary in leading roles.

Chup is reportedly a homage to one of Indian cinema's greatest filmmakers Guru Dutt who is known for movies like Pyaasa , Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam, and Kaagaz Ke Phool. The commercial failure of Kaagaz Ke Phool affected Dutt so much that he never helmed a film ever again.
R Balki's Chup revolves around a serial killer who goes on a killing spree, targeting film critics for giving poor ratings to movies. Sunny Deol essays the role of a cop in this thriller. Meanwhile, the first review of this much-anticipated film is out, and according to veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, it's R Balki's best film.
Mahesh Bhatt's daughter and actress Pooja Bhatt who is a part of Chup , took to her Instagram page to share her father's verdict for her film.
Sharing some pictures of the filmmaker from Chup 's special screening, she wrote, "So the man who has never remained #Chup about his life nor about other burning issues & taught me to do the same no matter what it cost, watched the film with the cast & crew yesterday..His verdict- "Loved, loved simply loved the film. It has audacity & stands tall all alone. That's why it sparkles. I am a Balki fan now. This is his best film." Mahesh Bhatt."
Meanwhile, the makers of Chup have organised a special public free preview of the film three days prior to its theatrical release in ten cities including Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Delhi, Gurgaon, Kolkata, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Bangalore. According to reports, the special free view got sold out in 10 minutes across the country.

This is the best of best film I have ever seen in my whole life. Mujhe lagta hai sabhi filmo ko uski ratings audiance ko Deni chahiye chahe wo 1 star ho ya phir 5 star. Kiu ki audiance ke liye hi to film bante hai, agar hum audiance us film ko Bina dekhe hi sirf aur sirf ratings per based karke na dekhe to kya fayda. Humhe us film ko dekhna chahiye, dekhne ke baad hum use ratings denge. Wo vi honest review. Hume pata hai ki Jo ratings dete hai unhe to film ke producers, actors koyi bhi Paisa khila sakta hai, magar hum audiance ko kabhi nhi... Chahe wo koyi bhi bada actor ho hum audiance ke Bina uska koyi namo nishan Tak nhi hai. Hum hi unke plus point hai aur minus point bhi. Mind it <br/>And I have this movie 5 out of 5 stars ❤️

The script of the movie and the title is so justified but few loopholes were there in the execution. The split personality of the actress in the first half completely vanished in the second half. And then how the killer got the victims at those murder sites was not clear. Except these all the actors were so accurate in their roles specially Salman and sreya . I completely loved the love story how it goes slowly and then got intensified . The dialogues were good , the plot and the cast were at the point . And yes I am ignoring the well predictable story line and all of know who was the killer from the first but the movie really wanted the audience to know that fact ... Over all the movie was worth watching. The ending could have had a twisted story like the protagonist killed the actress then got caught but I was really asking for a happy ending so yes it is a good movie to watch...enjoy

Chup Movie Review: R Balki Film Attempts A Homage To Guru Dutt But Is Not Quite There
'chup' feels like an unstable marriage of the artsy kind of cinema which has its own layers, tonality, experiment with form to the commercial kind with its touch of rain, romance, music, and thrills..
Sunny Deol Dulquer Salmaan Shreya Dhanwanthary Pooja Bhatt
New Delhi: 'Chup' starring Sunny Deol, Dulquer Salmaan, Shreya Dhanwanthary, and Pooja Bhatt is a well-cooked thriller. The R Balki film is slightly stretchy, artsy in pace and horror-inducing enough to make any serious film critic think twice before penning down a review.
'Chup' has a predictable plot, follows the three-act structure, has the Marquezian whodunit element ( of the killer being introduced from the very beginning and then the backstory of how, what, when) with a Guru Dutt dressing.
'Chup' is very well-written in terms of the dialogues. It also has a preachy tone to it, given it is a meta-comment on the process of filmmaking and reviewing; though not so much on filmmaking, and how to do the critiquing right.
The screenplay, however, despite its many layers and coinciding storylines which are attempting to connect all dots, could have been crisper. Then again, with the sprinkling and interlacing of archival footage from 'Pyaasa' and 'Kaagaz Ke Phool', inspiring shots from them, music and lyrics from legends like Sahir Ludhianvi and SD Burman intersected with the modern contemporary scene, is a difficult task. And, to achieve the tonality right by doing all of this could be the reason why the screenplay of 'Chup' feels a little overwhelming and confused.
Sunny Deol as investigating officer, of the gruesome killings of film critics by a serial killer who recognizes himself as the 'critics' critic', delivers a well-intentioned performance. A mentionable moment is when he justifies 'the ridiculous idealism of the youth' in the name/ passion of all the young people who are in the Army or the police force. It's like Balki is indirectly and almost intentionally putting those words in an actor like Sunny Deol's mouth, considering the kind of roles he has done throughout his career.
Likewise, 'Chup' is filled with these many passing intelligent, clever references, meta-comment on film, the art of critiquing, the nature of art/artist etc.
For a change, 'Chup' also happens to be a film that gives cinema/ film as a medium its due respect and place in society. A clever cameo of Amitabh Bachchan who emphasizes the importance of critiquing any art form or in society in general for it to evolve etc. are all pointers towards this. Infact, the seriousness of 'film' is best voiced by Dulquer Salmaan's character ( Danny, for the most part), who delivers excellent one-liners and the best of fresh dialogue any filmmaker making his next romantic film can learn from.
Lines like: 'Cinema is art and not a xerox machine'
'Criticism bhi tab chubta hai jab artist khud unsure hota hai' etc.
" Kaagaz Ke Phool banane walo ko kaagaz par kalam ghisne walon ne chup kara dia "-- as much romantic nostalgia this line by Danny invokes, it is also the crux and heart of 'Chup'.
In fact, 'Chup' feels like an unstable marriage of the artsy kind of cinema which has its own layers, textures, tonality, experiment with form to the commercial kind with its touch of rain, romance, music, and thrills.
From one angle, it also feels like R Balki is redeeming his own film with its material, away from the eyes of the critic, and not because of having audiences view and rate it first but with how the substance of the film underlines the seriousness of a film critic's job and how proactively it should be done.
What is also commendable is the ample experimentation with the form. The makers of 'Chup' use closeups of the serial killer to highlight his sense of gory in a very theater of cruelty-inspired Tarantino fashion ( apologies for the referencing), frame replications inspired from Guru Dutt's 'Pyaasa' and 'Kaagaz Ke Phool', using archival footage, the interlacing of shots and connecting the two with symbols and signs as opposed to jump cuts, so popular in this genre; all of these deserve a mention.
One interesting moment is when the title card of 'Kaagaz Ke Phool' plays on the screen as 'Chup' opens post-interval, almost signaling a new film within a film. Another meta-narrative comment so cleverly placed...
'Chup' uses a background score from the original soundtracks of 'Jaane Kya Tune Kahi', 'Ye Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaye'... and interlaces it with the modern touch thus safely redeeming it from creating its own kind of original score.
In terms of performances, it would be great if for once filmmakers cast Shreya Dhanwantary in roles other than those of a journalist to give the actor a chance to flesh out more expansively. Having said that, Shreya delivers a good performance.
Dulquer Salmaan is a delight to watch for most parts, however, in some sequences, partly to blame the music and the writing, his character does not land.
Pooja Bhatt as a criminal psychologist, adds the necessary drive to a slow-burn investigation, but her role is nothing more than an ornamental narrative device.
As the film nears its end, R Balki with his assured pace tends to connect the dots and brings all unfinished elements together, in the best show not tell fashion. Danny's backstory is revealed, and the pun on making a biopic on Gurudutt and his modern-day associate Sebastian interlaced to exploit the Guru Dutt analogy a lot more than it should have been.
A film within a film, 'Chup' is reconstructed after the 'Revenge of the Artist', a rise of an alter-ego of modern auteur filmmaker who considers Guru Dutt his idol, inspiration and relates to his fate as an artist. The only difference being that while Guru Dutt was so miserably affected by the failure of his last film 'Kaagaz Ke Phool', that he harmed himself to the extent that it is considered his suicide was the cause of the professional failure of 'Kaagaz Ke Phool'; in 'Chup', the antagonist manages to quieten all critics ( literally, by killing them) and winning as an artist.
Interestingly, as the film comes to a close, we see a resurrection of 'Chup', the film made by the serial killer, with the help of critics and Danny/Sebastian never coming to know of it. He languors in prison happily celebrating the demise of a film critic to COVID-19 calling him 'so sensitive'.
This image of Danny is inspired by the last song of 'Pyaasa'- Ye Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaye recreating the success-when-not-needed idea yet at the same time the banality of overexploiting the iconography of one of the most memorable cinematic viewing experiences to justify the madness of a serial killer. Like I said earlier, the unsteady marriage of pulp fiction and high-brow art is what sums up 'Chup'.

Chup Movie Review & Ratings | Hit or Flop?
Chup Movie Review: Dulquer Salmaan, who is now experiencing success with the movie “Sita Ramam” in Telugu and other languages, just released the same movie in Hindi and was highly accepted by the Hindi cinema industry. He produced the film “Chup: Revenge of the Artist,” which was directed by the renowned R Balki, in just one week. Let’s examine the film in detail to determine whether it is worth seeing in theatres and whether Dulquer can continue to succeed in the Hindi film industry.
Suresh, a lonely film director who meets Shanti by chance one night, casts her as the main character in Chup. Ironically, Shanti gains popularity as Suresh is compelled to leave the top echelons of the film industry. On the other side, serial homicides do occur in the city, and the killer marks the corpses with a star rating. You must see the entire film to comprehend how these murders are connected to Suresh and Shanti’s love story.
Cast & Crew
Shreya Dhanwantary, Pooja Bhatt, Rajeev Ravindranathan, Rakesh Bhavsar, Abhijit Sinha, and Harry Meena also have significant roles in the film Chup. Sunny Deol and Dulquer Salmaan play the key roles. R Balki is the film’s writer, director, and producer, along with Gauri Shinde and Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. Vishal Sinha is in charge of cinematography, and S.D. Burman, Amit Trivedi, Sneha Khanwalkar, and Aman Pant are responsible for the music.
Movie Verdict
There are a lot of things in the movie Chup that will keep you watching until the very end. The motivation for the serial killings and the protagonist’s emotional breakdown is both very skillfully written and shown on screen. The non-linear screenplay that was used for the movie adaptation will leave viewers scratching their heads as to what will happen next. The moments involving the murder and the investigation make the movie compelling to watch, despite the fact that the narration feels slower throughout the entire film. In contrast to the highly dated and dull stories that are now being shown on TV, the love moments between the leading couple also look new. You might be surprised by the movie’s climax because it might be unanticipated.
Dulquer Salmaan is regarded as one of India’s top actors of the current generation across all languages. He performed a fantastic job in his duty and makes it look so easy. It is enjoyable to see Sunny Deol on TV playing a role that is a perfect fit for him, and the actor did a terrific job. Shreya Dhanwantary has a lovely appearance and performed her duties well, despite having little screen time. All of the actors, including Pooja Bhatt, played their roles as needed for the narrative.
The Chup movie is excellent technically. The best aspect of the film’s soundtrack, which was composed by Amit Trivedi, Sneha Khanwalkar, and Aman Pant, is the background music. As a cinematographer, Vishal Sinha performed a terrific job, using some spectacular images and colors that fit the tone of the movie. The editing appears flawless.
One of the few writers and filmmakers with respectable filmography in the Hindi cinema business is R Balki. Chup is another hit in R Balki’s career as a director, and all of his movies are at the very least guaranteed successes. Even though it was his first time tackling the thriller, he produced a well-written and well-executed work.
Overall, Chup is a superb criminal thriller that should be seen in theatres due to some excellent acting and production.
