NERC-funded PhD Studentships

The University of Cambridge will offer at least 12 3.5 year NERC -funded PhD studentships through the Cambridge Climate, Life and Earth (C-CLEAR) DTP to start 1 October 2024. More funding and eligibility information can be found on our website here .

The C-CLEAR NERC DTP and University of Cambridge actively support equality, diversity and inclusion and we encourage applications from eligible applicants from all sections of society.

How to apply:

1) Take a look at the projects on offer and make contact with the lead supervisor for those that particularly interest you, as our prospective supervisors can often provide useful advice and information about the project. We are also happy to devise a project with you if you have research interests that we share; again you should get in touch with your prospective supervisor(s) before applying. Projects for 2024 entry are now available.

There are several ways to search:1) by broad theme ( Climate Change and Environmental Processes , Biology and Conservation or Solid Earth and Geological Hazards ); 2) by staff member/department ( Staff Directory ); or 3) by searching for keyword (e.g. 'Geography' or 'Greenland').

Please note that academic staff can act as lead supervisor for one C-CLEAR studentship per application round. To avoid potential clashes at appointment we recommend that you provide a prioritised list of projects that you would consider. Should you list projects hosted within more than one Department, you will be considered for other funding (non-NERC DTP) in the host department you have applied to only.

2) Before starting the application, please ensure you are eligible to apply for admission

Competition for admission to the University of Cambridge graduate programme is intense. We require our graduate entrants to have:

  • at least a 2.1 in an Honours degree from a UK University or equivalent standard from an Overseas University (e.g. CGPA 3.5/4.0) in a relevant subject (but see funding information ).
  • two outstanding references, please see the Graduate Admissions pages below for more details (We advise that you request these well in advance of the application deadline)
  • fluency in the English language - full information on the University's requirements can viewed here .

For more details of the University's academic requirements see the University's Graduate Admissions pages.

3) You will need to apply through the University's Applicant Portal . You can find out which course to apply for and further instructions by clicking on the ‘Applying’ link at the bottom of each project page of the C-CLEAR website.

As you complete your application, please note the following:

Please select a Michaelmas Term 2024 start (01-Oct-2024).

Funding section: When asked ‘Do you wish to apply for funding?’ please tick the box ‘Yes-I wish to apply for funding’.

(Note: if you are applying to projects based at the Departments of Geography (including the Scott Polar Research Institute) or Chemistry, you may not see the funding section after 1 December ; in this case you can still apply to the NERC DTP up to our 4 January 2024 noon deadline, but must indicate the NERC DTP project number(s) and supervisor(s) in the respective research section of your application).

Cambridge Trust & Gates Cambridge Pages: We encourage you to complete the Cambridge Trust and Gates Cambridge sections so that you are eligible for as many sources of PhD funding as possible beyond the DTP (be aware that earlier deadlines may apply, please see the deadline section below)

UKRI: please answer 'yes' that you wish to apply to the NERC Doctoral Training Partnership section and list the C-CLEAR DTP projects number(s) and/or supervisor(s) here.

If listing multiple studentships please indicate these in priority order, and apply to the course for your top priority project.

Attachments: Application attachments may vary by course (for example some will request a CV and/or research proposal); please provide all information requested by the course(s) for which you would like to be considered.

A) Announcement: Projects for 2024 entry are now live.

B) Deadlines:

The final deadline / closing date for C-CLEAR DTP applications is 12:00 pm (noon) GMT, Thursday 4 January 2024. All supporting documentation including references must be submitted by this date.

By completing your application by the above date, the course you have applied to should also consider you for other PhD funding schemes (Cambridge Trust, etc). Three exceptions of schemes with earlier deadlines that we are aware of are:

  • The Department of Chemistry deadline to be considered for other PhD funding (beyond the NERC DTP) is earlier than for the NERC DTP. See more details at https://www.ch.cam.ac.uk/pgapp/postgraduate-admissions-home
  • The Department of Geography (PhD in Geography, PhD in Polar Studies) deadline to be considered for other PhD funding (beyond the NERC DTP) is earlier than for the NERC DTP. See more details at https://www.geog.cam.ac.uk/graduate/phd/
  • US-based applicants for Gates Cambridge funding should apply by 11 October 2023 (including references) 2024 date TBC: https://www.gatescambridge.org/apply/timeline

C) Interviews:

It is anticipated that interviews will be held online the week of 19   February 2024.

Initial offers will be communicated starting in late February with decisions to be made by the Universal Acceptance Date agreed by NERC on noon Wednesday 13 March 2024.

If you have any questions, we're happy to help. Contact the C-CLEAR DTP Administrator at [email protected] or the departmental Graduate Administrator.

Trinity College offers a range of competitive postgraduate awards (often referred to as studentships or bursaries) to students wishing to study at the University of Cambridge. Only applicants who have applied to the University of Cambridge for admission as postgraduate students are eligible for these awards.

Applicants wishing to be considered for most Trinity College studentships and bursaries will not need to complete any form of separate funding application. Candidates will be asked if they wish to be considered for specific Trinity awards as part of the University application process, if they meet the required eligibility criteria.

Only candidates invited to apply for either a Trinity Internal Graduate Studentship or an Overseas Bursary, or the Peter Shaffer award will be asked to submit a separate funding application.

Applicants wishing to be considered for a Trinity External Research Studentship are advised to indicate Trinity as the College of first preference on their application to the University.

For candidates with Overseas fee status, the student visa cost and immigration health surcharge will also be covered if applicable.

As from October 2024 awards will also carry an extra £500 research emolument per annum.

Please note: Successful applicants may be contacted during their course by Trinity’s Alumni Relations and Development Office to ask for a short account on their progress and experience at Trinity College for the purpose of reporting to the donors of certain awards.

Tarner Studentship in Philosophy of Science or the History of Scientific Ideas

Students from any university may be candidates for the Tarner Studentship in Philosophy of Science or the History of Scientific Ideas. Applicants must be admitted to Cambridge University to undertake research for the PhD degree and become a member of Trinity College. Successful candidates may then hold the studentship for up to three years and a half years, subject to satisfactory progress.

At the time of taking up the Studentship a successful candidate will normally be expected to have completed the one-year course of study for the MPhil Degree of the University of Cambridge or a similar course elsewhere.

Applicants will also be expected to apply for financial support from other bodies but, should no financial support from another source be available, a Tarner studentship holder may:

  • have all approved University and College fees paid on her/his behalf
  • receive a maintenance allowance (at the UKRI rate), and
  • receive a travel allowance for overseas students.

In case of hardship, a married student may be considered for an extra allowance.

Tom Howat PhD Studentship in Mathematics

The Tom Howat PhD Studentship in Mathematics will support an outstanding candidate undertaking PhD research in the field of Mathematics.  The studentship is funded by a generous donation made by Dr T J Howat (Trinity College Matric. 1999).

Eligible applicants must have applied for admission, or already received an offer of admission, to the University of Cambridge for the PhD in Mathematics.  Home or Overseas graduates of any university may apply.

  • Graduate Course Fees,

An award will be conditional on the applicant being accepted by the University’s Graduate Admissions Office. The successful applicant must become a member of Trinity College on taking up the Studentship.

Trinity External Research Studentships

The External Research Studentships are intended for students who wish to undertake a PhD (or MPhil with an intention to continue to PhD) at the University of Cambridge.

  • have received an offer of admission from the University of Cambridge for a PhD (or MPhil with a stated intention to continue to PhD),
  • have received an offer of membership from Trinity College, and
  • not yet have been a member of the University of Cambridge as an undergraduate or postgraduate student.
  • Postgraduate course fees
  • Maintenance allowance (at the UKRI rate, pro-rated for the MPhil)

Candidates considered for a Trinity External Research Studentship must also apply to other funding bodies for financial support. For details and application deadlines see the ‘Funding’ section of the University’s Postgraduate Admissions website. The Studentship may be held for the normal minimum duration of the course, subject to satisfactory academic progress, and a maximum of three and a half years in total.

Applicants accepted for membership at Trinity will be considered for these awards on the basis of their University Application Form.

Up to six External Research Studentships may be awarded. Competition for these Studentships is intense so it is the College’s practice to elect reserve candidates who may be offered a Studentship if any awards are declined. Honorary Trinity External Research Studentships may be awarded to those who receive a Research Council Studentship or equivalent.

Trinity Internal Graduate Studentships (IGS)

This scheme supports a number of students who have undertaken undergraduate or MPhil studies at Trinity College, and who wish to continue to further postgraduate-level study. It is a condition that anyone considered for an IGS must apply for external funding, including from elsewhere in the University.

If you are currently studying at Trinity College, please see the information at Tutorial: Studentship and Scholarships . If you are an Alumnus returning to undertake a postgraduate course, please request information by email using [email protected] .

Trinity Overseas Bursaries

Trinity Overseas Bursaries are intended for overseas postgraduate students who have been offered membership at Trinity College. The value of these Bursaries depends on need. They are not intended to provide a major source of finance, but to give a necessary and just sufficient addition for overseas postgraduate students whose resources fail to meet the financial requirement of the University by a modest amount.

Application forms are sent to all overseas postgraduate students at the point of an offer of admission to the College. Completed applications must be returned no later than 31 May 2024.

Trinity Pre-Research Studentship for Language Study

These Studentships are intended for the holders of Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) or British Academy Postgraduate Studentships or similar awards who wish to study a language during their first or second postgraduate year, in preparation for a subsequent period of research for the PhD degree. They are available only to those whose projected subject of research requires a knowledge of a  rare language for a specific research project , during their first or second postgraduate year, in preparation for a subsequent period of research for the PhD degree.

The award of a Pre-Research Language Studentship is normally conditional on the holder securing an AHRC or similar award for doctoral study, and being accepted by the Postgraduate Admissions Office for admission as a postgraduate student. The emoluments of this Studentship are then either paid in the first year (if the doctoral studentship can be postponed) or alternatively held in abeyance until the final year of study for the PhD degree. Maintenance is then paid at the same level as that of a Trinity Internal Graduate Studentship.

Applicants should be aware that the authorities administering the AHRC and other postgraduate studentships normally expect the holder to be registered for the PhD degree within the first two years of postgraduate study. At the University of Cambridge a candidate for registration is required by her/his Degree Committee to submit work for assessment. The first years of postgraduate study must therefore include a substantial effort in research as well as the linguistic study. Also, some public authorities now award postgraduate studentships for one year in the first instance, to lead to a Master’s degree, and permit candidature later for a three-year doctoral studentship. In that case, the holding of a Pre-Research Studentship for Language Study is conditional on the three-year doctoral studentship having been secured.

The holder of a Pre-Research Studentship for Language Study must be, or become, a member of Trinity College from the start of doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge.

Trinity Studentship in Mathematics

The Trinity Studentship in Mathematics is a one-year studentship intended for students who wish to undertake research in Mathematics at the University of Cambridge but who are required by the Faculty of Mathematics to take, in the first instance, the course leading to the Master of Advanced Study (MASt).

On completion of the MASt, the student will be eligible to apply for a Trinity Internal Graduate Studentship at Trinity College in order to undertake the PhD degree.

  • have applied for admission, or already received an offer of admission, to the University of Cambridge for the MASt degree,
  • Postgraduate Course Fees for the MASt

Exceptionally promising students may be elected straight away to a Studentship which provides up to four and a half years of support, the first year to be devoted, under the conditions detailed above, to the MASt, the next three and a half years (subject to good performance in the MASt) to be spent on research for a PhD in Mathematics.

An award will be conditional on the applicant being accepted by the University’s Postgraduate Admissions Office for a course in the University. Successful applicant(s) must become member(s) of Trinity College on taking up the Studentship.

Trinity Studentship in Theology

The Trinity Studentship in Theology is intended for students who wish to undertake a PhD in Theology. Graduates of any University are eligible to apply.

Eligible applicants must have applied for admission, or already received an offer of admission to the University of Cambridge for a PhD degree.

Candidates are expected to have applied to all other sources of financial support open to them. For a student who has no support or only partial support from any other source, the studentship covers:

The Studentship may be held for a maximum of three and a half years, subject to satisfactory progress.

Among equally strong candidates preference will be given first to lineal descendants of members of the Haberdashers’ Company and then to candidates from Staffordshire.

Wittgenstein Studentship in Philosophy

The Wittgenstein Studentship in Philosophy will support an outstanding candidate who intends to undertake the MPhil in Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy in the University of Cambridge.

Candidates intending to study philosophy within an MPhil in the Faculty of Classics or the Department of History and Philosophy of Science are also eligible to apply.

Open to any student who is, or is about to be, registered as a Graduate Student in the University of Cambridge and who intends to undertake research on a philosophical topic, either in the Faculty of Philosophy or elsewhere in the University.

Tenure of the Studentship is conditional on the elected student having applied for admission to the University’s Graduate Admissions Office and been accepted for the MPhil degree.

  • Postgraduate Graduate Course Fees  and
  • a discretionary maintenance allowance

The successful applicant must become a member of Trinity College on taking up the Studentship.

PhD Studentship under supervision of Dr Alex Forse (Materials Chemistry)

PhD in Materials Chemistry: Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Capture

Applications are invited for a 3.5-year PhD studentship based in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. The student will be supervised by Dr Alexander Forse, and the project will develop electrochemical systems for carbon dioxide capture.

Research in the Forse group centres around the development of new materials for climate change mitigation. “Electrochemical carbon dioxide capture” is an emerging strategy for capturing carbon dioxide at source, and offers an energy-efficient means to prevent carbon dioxide emissions. The overarching aims of this PhD project are to understand the mechanisms of electrochemical carbon dioxide capture, and to design improved devices.

Day to day, the project will involve electrode synthesis/fabrication, electrochemical gas adsorption experiments, data analysis and interpretation, with opportunities to carry out in situ NMR spectroscopy measurements. The successful applicant will benefit from access to state-of-the-art gas adsorption instruments, potentiostats, NMR spectrometers and wet-lab space, as required for this project.

Applicants should have or shortly expect to obtain a first or upper second-class degree from a UK university, or an equivalent standard from an overseas university, in a relevant subject such as chemistry. Practical experience of materials chemistry, or electrochemistry, or solid-state NMR spectroscopy would be beneficial, but in no way essential.

The studentship provides a maintenance grant of £18,622 per year, and tuition fees at the UK/home rate. Non-UK applicants will be considered if they are able to fund the overseas fees differential, or if they are awarded a suitable scholarship. Full details of the University's entrance requirements and scholarships are specified on the following link: www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk .

To apply, please submit an application through the University Applicant Portal: www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/pcchpdpch for the course "PhD in Chemistry", naming Dr Alexander Forse as potential supervisor. Applications should be submitted by 5 th December to be considered.

Interviews will take place in early January. For any queries about this studentship, please contact Dr Forse by email at acf50@cam.ac.uk.

We strongly encourage you to apply if you are interested, and we are keen to see as many applications as possible from BAME applicants, women, applicants with diverse gender identities, and other underrepresented groups. We encourage good work-life balance, and accommodate flexible working arrangements.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program honors nine Chemistry student community members

NSF GRFP Honorees, 2024

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (4/26/2023) – Nine members of the Department of Chemistry student community were recently honored with recognition by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP). Briana Krupinsky, Grace Murphy, Timmy Nguyen, and Ulises Perez were awarded fellowships, and Mrinalni Iyer, Killian MacFeely, Wallee Naimi, Miles Willis, and Ali Younis received honorable mentions.

Briana Krupinsky is a second-year graduate student in the Lamb group . She joined the UMN community after completing her undergraduate studies at the University of North Dakota. Briana investigates N-hetereocyclic carbene-carbodiimide (NHC-CDI) adducts for application as catalyst precursors in organocatalysis. At the moment, this includes working towards understanding the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of NHC-CDI adducts for well-controlled catalysis. One of Briana’s research goals is to develop a light-activated NHC-CDI catalyst precursor to achieve spatiotemporal control for the synthesis of polymers.

Grace Murphy , a member of the Hoover lab , came to UMN after completing her undergraduate studies at Saint Louis University. One of her long-term goals as a chemist is to study and develop transition metal catalyzed reactions that are used in organic chemistry. She is particularly interested in understanding the structure-reactivity relationships that make difficult reactions possible. Grace is currently working towards understanding the mechanism of nickel catalyzed/mediated decarbonylation, a reaction that has potential future applications to the synthesis of pharmaceuticals to polymer upcycling.

Timmy Nguyen first came to UMN for a summer research experience program in 2022, right before his senior year at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He officially joined the graduate program in 2023 as a member of the Haynes group. Timmy is interested in anisotropic nanoparticles as substrates and recently started working on a project to synthesize silica-coated gold nanorods for use in SERS sensors. He is also passionate about participating in outreach activities through Science for All, a student group that works to bring the excitement of science to Minnesota middle schools.

Ulises Perez , a Spring 2023 graduate from the UMN Chemistry undergraduate program and current PhD student at University of Washington, was also awarded a fellowship.

The NSF GRFP recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions. The program also seeks to support the participation of underrepresented groups in STEM graduate studies.

Mrinalni Iyer, Killian MacFeely, Wallee Naimi, Miles Willis, and Ali Younis received honorable mentions for their applications. The Department of Chemistry congratulates all nine students on this significant national academic achievement!

Inside the Lab: Undergrads Share Their Summer Research Stories

  • Collaboration and Impact

cambridge chemistry phd studentships

Last year our Chemistry@Cambridge Opportunity Fund and alumni gifts supported four undergrads to experience what it’s like to complete a project in a research group. Two of them report on their experience.

Jonah Eicke

Jonah (trinity hall) completed an eight-week summer internship in professor matthew gaunt’s synthetic chemistry group. he is now completing his part iii project in the gaunt group, working on guanosine functionalisation..

During Part II Chemistry, I was thinking about applying for a PhD, but I didn’t know for sure, so a summer internship was a good way to try it out. I had developed an interest in synthetic chemistry and I wanted the chance to get some experience in the lab, so I applied to Prof Gaunt’s group.

I worked with Dr Abigail Barker-Mountford on the synthesis of a molecule called cGAMP, which plays a role in the natural immune response. The group has a partnership with a group at Addenbrooke’s to test modified versions of cGAMP, but before you can modify it you have to make some!

I think the biggest thing I learned was developing practical, useful chemistry skills. I am already using them for my Part III and I will need them for a PhD. I also learned a lot from seeing how people went about their research. It was different from lectures and supervisions and practicals; I had a supervisor but was also working for myself, on my own ideas.

I enjoyed my time going into the lab. I thought ‘I could do this for four years’ so I’m now applying for PhD programmes. I’d like to thank the funders of the internship: They’ve provided me with a really brilliant opportunity, and I am grateful.

This fund also supported Harveen Kaur’s project in Professor Angelos Michaelides’ ICE group.

Amber Wright

Amber's (trinity) project in professor stuart clarke’s surface science group. she is now looking at master’s programmes in physical chemistry..

I was doing my Part II in Chemistry and I wanted to get some lab experience and a feel for what it might be like to do a PhD. I like physical chemistry so I chose a project on battery electrolytes.

To develop new and better electrolytes for batteries, we need to know how they behave in solution. I was looking at their freezing point depression, which is the principle we see when we put salt on roads in cold weather to prevent ice formation. This occurs when we add any solute to any solvent. If we can precisely measure the amount the freezing point changes after doing this, then we gain information about the electrolyte. Our hope is that this method will provide a quicker alternative to DFT (density functional theory) calculations.

I learned a lot during my internship about how projects run: I made bumpy progress and the technique didn’t work particularly well, so I think it gave me a more realistic view of research. I also became much more interested in the practical applications of research, and now I am looking for a Master’s with sustainable applications.

I would like to say thank you very much to Wyn Lewis-Bevan. I really enjoyed the project, I loved working in a collaborative lab environment, and to feel so supported and capable whilst doing the project made me very excited about my future career.

This fund also supported Iona Lynn’s project with Dr Mike Casford.
