The complete guide to the IELTS Listening Module

IELTS listening

The listening module in IELTS is divided into 4 parts with 10 questions each ( 40 questions in total). The first part is the easiest, and the fourth is the hardest. You will hear the recordings only once. The test will take around  30 minutes , and then you will have 10 more minutes in paper-based IELTS  to review your answers and write them down on your separate answer sheet . However, in computer-based test, you will only have 2 minutes at the end to review your answers. You input answers directly as you hear them.

It is therefore very important that you practice a lot using appropriate techniques before you take the exam. In this guide, you will learn how to approach each question type to maximize your score.

Information about the test format and scoring

  • two speakers
  • usually about personal information in an everyday social context (e.g., booking a hotel room)
  • one speaker
  • a monologue about a general topic (e.g., a tour guide giving information about a building)
  • two to four speakers
  • a discussion in an academic context (e.g., students talking about an assignment)
  • a monologue in an academic context (e.g., a university lecture)

Question: How is this module scored?

Answer: You only get points for your correct answers , and t here is no penalty for incorrect ones. Therefore, you should answer all the questions and make a guess whenever you miss one. The table below can help you estimate your score:

assignment plan ielts listening

More basic information about the exam

  • You will have about 20 seconds to read the questions before each part starts. Use this time to underline or highlight keywords. Usually, the speakers use synonyms or paraphrases of the keywords. You can use them to identify the answers.
  • You will hear only native speaker accents. These may include British, American, Australian, and New Zealand accents.
  • You will have half a minute to check your answers after each part is over. If you are sure about your answers, use this time to underline or highlight the keywords for the next part.
  • Spelling is very important. The answers that are not spelled correctly will be marked wrong.
  • If you hear the answer in plural form , you must write it in plural form.
  • You should only write what you hear without changing it .
  • Any information (names of people or places) that you are not expected to know will be spelled out. However, common names like John, Susan, Emily, Park Hotel, etc. won’t be spelled out.
  • The questions follow the flow of the audio , so you will not hear the answer for question number 20 before the one for 19.
  • IELTS listening exam is all about synonyms and paraphrases . It means that you won’t hear the exact words you see in the questions.

Question: The house was repaired and then modified to be used as a ………………

Speaker: The local authorities renovated the building as a museum.

  • There is a word limit for each answer. If you go above the limit, your answer will be marked wrong. Take, for example, the following:
  • one word and one number
  • two words and one number
  • 10 students = 1 number + 1 word
  • 10% = 1 number
  • $10 = 1 number
  • 10 percent = 1 number + 1 word
  • 10 dollars = 1 number + 1 word
  • ten dollars = 2 words
  • 10AM: 1 number
  • 10:30 = 1 number
  • 10th November = 1 number + 1 word
  • Hyphenated compounds also count as one word : mother-in-law = 1 word
  • contractions count as one word: He’s = 1 word

Tips to help you write your answers with confidence

  • Dates should be written appropriately. It means that you should choose either American or British style depending on your writing style. Here is how you do so:

Speaker: Today is the 15th of January .

If you write in the American style, follow this format:

January 15th or January 15

If you write in the British style, follow this format:

15th January or 15 January

Note: In summary, dates in American and British styles are written as explained below:

American style: Month/Day/Year

01/15/2021 = January 15, 2021 = Friday, January 15, 2021

British style: Day/Month/Year

15/01/2021 = 15 January 2021 = Friday, 15 January 2021

  • fifteen pounds ninety-nine
  • fifteen pounds and ninety-nine pence
  • fifteen ninety-nine

Note: Try not to write numbers as words in the listening section because it wastes your valuable time, and there is always a chance of making spelling mistakes.

  • When talking about phone numbers , speakers express the digits one by one. However, you should be wary of expressions like double three (33), triple five (555), etc. Also, the number 0 can be expressed in three ways: zero , naught , and oh .
  • Pay close attention to transitional words or phrases like however, although, that said , etc. They indicate a shift, which will most probably lead to the answer.
  • Be wary of traps or distractors . Here are common traps in IELTS listening:
  • Answers that change:

Example: The meeting is at 6. Oh, no, it’s at 6:30 .

  • words that look like the answer but they don’t fit the gap

Example: Jenny lives on…………..

Agent: Where do you live?

Jenny: I live in Chicago.

Agent: Do you live in a house or an apartment?

Jenny: I live on the fifth floor of a 7-story building.

Explanation: The answer is the fifth floor, not Chicago. Pay attention to the prepositions. You can’t say on Chicago . Your answer should fit the gap grammatically as well.

  • Using similar words rather than paraphrases

Example: The reconstruction of the building finished in the year………..

Speaker: When this building was being constructed in 1973, the people were going through  difficult time. The government ignored them and allocated a lot of funds to this building. As a result, there was an uprising, which led to the destruction of the new building. In 2010 , however, when things were fine, funds were allocated once again to reconstruct the building and bring it to its former glory. The renovation was completed in 2014.

Explanation: The answer is 2014. We don’t need the construction year (1973), nor do we need the year in which the reconstruction began. We need the year in which it finished.

IELTS listening question types

Form completion.

This type of question is a box or an official form asking for factual information like name, date of birth, phone number, age, etc. For example, a hotel receptionist is asking the customer for his or her personal information to book a room for them. The information that is already written will help you locate where the speaker is and identify the answer.

Multiple choice

assignment plan ielts listening

In this type of question, there is a question or an incomplete sentence with options to choose from. Sometimes the question asks you to choose more than one option, so read the question carefully before you start listening. Before you listen, read the questions first and underline/highlight the most important words or phrases that can help you locate the answers. As you listen, cross out the distractors/incorrect answers; you will finally be left with the correct one(s).

In questions like the ones below, the flow of the listening is in order of the numbers (the questions) , not the letters in the box. Highlight the keywords in the numbers. When they start talking about the items, shift your focus to the box, choose the related option, and then move on to the next.

assignment plan ielts listening

Plan, map, or diagram labeling

assignment plan ielts listening

For this type of question, follow the steps below:

  • Check if it is a fill-in-the-blank task with only numbered blanks on the map or matching numbers with the letters in the box.
  • Study the map quickly and familiarize yourself with the names and shapes of different parts.
  • Follow the speaker like you are walking in the area and look for names to fill in the blanks. Remember to keep an eye on the box of options too.
  • If there are locations without names, and they are not part of the question, write their names quickly because they might come in handy later.
  • When the speaker pauses for a while, it means that he or she is about to move on to the next thing.

Note completion

assignment plan ielts listening

The notes are going to be organized in some format. Usually, it is a box or a bulleted list with blanks inside. Highlight keywords before you start listening, and remember not to write more words than the limit.

Table completion

assignment plan ielts listening

This type of question is like note completion. Focus on the column headings to know which part the speaker is talking about. Most of the time, the flow of the speech is from the first column on the left to the last column.

flowchart completion

assignment plan ielts listening

The flowcharts usually include a series of boxes or circles connected by lines or arrows with blanks inside. The flow of the speech is the same as that of the flowchart. However, you should remember that sometimes the answers that are together on the chart (like questions number 21 and 22 in the one below) may not come together in the audio. The speaker may mention one of them in a sentence and the other in the next.

Summary completion

assignment plan ielts listening

Summary completion might look the hardest for some test takers. This kind of question requires fast highlighting of keywords. The speakers are going to use synonyms or paraphrases of the keywords. For example, in the picture below, if you want to identify the answer for question number 31, you’ll need to look for paraphrases of “stick to.” The speaker might say, ” For a healthy life, you need to follow a dietary regime.

Sentence completion

assignment plan ielts listening

In these questions, you need to find the word(s) that fit in the blanks. Remember that you can’t make any changes to the words you hear to make it fit. For example, if you need the -ing form of the verb, but the speaker uses the past tense, you should look for another word. What you hear should be written exactly as it is said.

Short-answer questions

assignment plan ielts listening

In these questions, there might be one or more gaps for a question. Each gap requires a different answer. Highlight keywords before you start listening to help you identify the answers. Only write the answers because there will be a word limit.

10 tips for answering map or plan questions in IELTS Listening

Date Published

01 February 2023

This article was first published on WeLoveIELTS.org (this website is now closed)

When was the last time you asked a person (not your phone or computer) for directions? If, like me, it was a long time ago, you may need help following the directions or description you hear when answering map or plan questions in Part 2 of the IELTS Listening test.

The good news is that we have 10 tips on how to answer these types of questions!

IELTS Listening map and plan questions

Let’s start by looking at exactly what IELTS Listening map and plan questions are so you know what to expect in your IELTS test.

There are in fact two different ways that map and plan questions are presented.

The first way is numbered questions on a map or plan and a list of possible answers (A, B, C, etc.) above or to the side, like this example taken for Official IELTS Practice Materials 2:

Example of IELTS Listening plan question

The second way is the possible answers (A, B, C, etc.) on the map or plan and the numbered questions below that, like this example from IELTS 15:

Example of IELTS Listening map question

This is important to know because, as you’ll see below, the way the questions are presented gives you a clue about how the information in the recording is organised.

Remember! You only have limited time to look at the Listening questions before the recording starts, so it’s important to make the best use of this time.

Tips before you listen

  • Read the instructions and the title of the map or plan if there is one, check if the numbered questions are on the map/plan or below it, and most importantly, identify if there’s a likely starting place, e.g. an arrow and/or an entrance to a building or park like the main gate in the plan above.
  • Circle or underline labels on the map/plan and check if there’s a compass as these will probably be included in the recording as part of the directions/description (e.g. It’s just south of the Adventure Playground).
  • If the numbered questions are on the map/plan, check if the questions go in order from bottom to top, left to right, etc. as this tells you how the information in the recording will be organised and may indicate where the recording will start from (e.g. Questions 11-17 in the plan above go in order from the bottom left to the top and then to the bottom right).
  • If the possible answers are on the map/plan, remember that these do not tell you how information in the recording will be organised (e.g. Location C may or may not be mentioned before Location D in the map above).
  • Look at the list of places you need to identify but don’t try to remember them all as you can look at the list while listening or after listening if you take notes during the recording.

Tips for while you’re listening

If you follow the tips below, you’ll be less likely to get lost while listening, and, if you do get lost, you’ll be more able to quickly find your place again.

  • Draw your place on the map/plan as you listen as this will keep you focused on following the directions/description and, if you do get lost, listen for a mention of one of the labels on the map/plan so that you know where you are again (e.g. the information point in the plan above).
  • Listen for words/phrases that tell you the direction to move in or where something is (e.g. walk straight ahead, opposite, on the left) as these will help you follow the directions/description and identify answers.
  • Listen for the locations given in the numbered questions or possible answers as the recording will use these names not synonyms, e.g. the recording for the map above will include ‘outdoor gym’ not ‘exercise equipment’.
  • Avoid distractors as alternative but incorrect answers will be mentioned in the recording.

Remember! You’re allowed to draw on the Listening question paper in the paper-based test.

Tips for after you’ve listened

Here’s one last tip in case you miss any of the answers while listening.

  • Guess any answers you don’t know as you won’t lose marks for wrong answers and you could guess right!

A Complete Guide to the IELTS Listening Exam

Listening is one of the four parts of the IELTS exam and it is the same regardless of whether you choose to take the academic or general test. It is comprised of four sections and you will be asked a variety of questions on these listening passages. You can expect to hear different accents and different types of materials, from phone conversations to lectures. There are forty questions and you have forty minutes to listen and answer. In this article, I will give a complete guide to the IELTS listening exam. You can find useful hints and tips for IELTS listening elsewhere on this site.

An Overview

The IELTS listening exam is the same for both the general and academic IELTS tests. It requires no specialist knowledge in order to pass, and is a good test of your overall English ability. Sections one and two are in a social context but the third and fourth sections are usually located in an educational facility, and have an academic context. I shall explain more about this, in detail, later.

The purpose of the IELTS listening exam is to test your ability to do the following:

  • understand main ideas
  • follow logical arguments
  • find specific information (ie numbers, addresses)
  • recognize opinions or attitudes

Importantly, you will only have one chance to hear the recording and choose a correct answer.

You will listen to approximately thirty minutes of recordings, including time for reading the questions. The instructions are clear, and you will be told “you now have x minutes” to check your answers or read the next set of questions. At the end of this time, you have ten minutes to transfer your answers from the question paper to the answer paper, which looks like this:

IELTS Listening Answer Sheet

You will be given some time to read the questions prior to actually listening to the recording. You should note your answers on the question paper, and then transfer them during the final ten minutes to the answer sheet. Copy the answers carefully, paying attention to spelling. Make sure that you enter the right answer for the right question number.

Hint: Use your time wisely. When you are given time before a new section starts, don’t check answers from the previous section. Instead, read ahead and predict the sort of material you will hear next. For example, if there is a $ before the blank space, you will be listening for a number. Think about themes and content, as well as the specific answers you should listen for. You can use the time at the end to check spelling and review your answers.

There are four sections to the exam, and each is little more difficult than the one before it. This means that the first section is the easiest and the last is the most difficult. In this regard, it is the same as the speaking exam . There are ten questions in each section, making forty questions in total.

The first thing that you will hear is a set of instructions and an example answer, which is also marked on your question paper. After that, you will soon begin section one.

In this section, you will hear a conversation between two people. The situation will be a normal, everyday social setting. For example, a phone call to a travel agency or realtor. You are typically expected to listen for specific details like the person’s name, address, and phone number. It may look like this:

IELTS listening section 1

The British Council (who run the IELTS exam along with Cambridge University) offer free practice tests like this one . You can practice your listening skills here, or buy the official exam papers .

Next is a monologue, which means just one person speaks. This is again a social setting and typical examples include someone giving details about services, arrangements, or facilities. It will be something of general interest. You can expect different types of questions, and one very common question type in section 2 is filling in a table with the correct information.

Now we begin the academic half of the listening exam. In section 3, you will hear a conversation between two or more people talking about something related to education – maybe a college assignment or a post-lecture discussion. There can be up to four people talking, and you will most likely have to track their attitudes and opinions. You should also be aware that you may need to record factual information as well.

Here is an example question:

The final section is the most difficult one, and is a monologue set in an academic context. It will be related to section 3 and may consist of a lecturer or other speaker giving an informative talk on a set topic. You will not need to know anything about the topic in advance in order to get the questions right. You will, however, need to gather factual information and identify attitudes and opinions .

Here is a practice test that only looks at section 4 of the IELTS listening exam:

Video Overview

I made this video to help you better understand the IELTS listening exam as a whole. It should be very helpful for students who haven’t yet taken the IELTS, and just want to get a basic understanding.

Question Types

You will have noticed from reading the above guide that the IELTS listening exam, although difficult, is actually quite predictable. It is easy to prepare for it because it doesn’t change much. Thankfully, there are only a limited number of question types, too. Some of these are similar to the questions you are asked in the reading exam, while others are specific to the IELTS listening. I will look at some of the more common ones.

Multiple Choice

This is a very common question type, so you really should practice it often. In this type of question, you will be given several possible answers. You may be given a simple question or else the first part of a sentence. It is also possible that you may have to choose more than one answer, so read the instructions very carefully.

Here’s an example question:

What is John going to do before the course starts? A.  attend a class B. write a report C. read a book

Hint: If you don’t know what the answer is, think about what is not correct. If are certain that C is incorrect, then you can guess at either A and B. Never leave a question unanswered.

Label a Map, Diagram, etc

One of the more challenging questions in the listening exam is labeling a map, diagram, or plan. In this case, you need to listen very carefully and follow the verbal description well enough to associate it with the visual representation. This requires the ability to follow instructions and directions, or determine spatial relationships.

It should look something like this:

Form, Table, Summary Completion

There are many variations on this, but quite simply you will be given some sort of incomplete information and asked to complete it according to the information in the listening passage. Perhaps it will be a note or form that needs to be filled with names or numbers. In other cases it is a more complex flow chart that needs you to listen for stages in a procedure.

The most important thing with this type of question is to read the instructions carefully. It will say something like:

WRITE NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER

You must make sure to stick to this as any answer with too many words will be marked as incorrect.

Short Answers

This is something many students find to be difficult as you are asked a question and required to listen to find the words in the recording. You will again be told the maximum number of words you can use, so make sure not to exceed that limit.

Because of the nature of the question, the answer will not be too complex. Instead, expect questions like “Who…?” and “What time…?” that require only one or two words as an answer.

Each question is worth one mark, so you will be given a mark out of forty for your IELTS listening test. This is converted to a band score of between 0-9.

assignment plan ielts listening

You can calculate your band score from the number of answers you get correct. Do plenty of listening practice under exam conditions and you will get a good idea of what your band score will be after doing the real IELTS exam.

Other Important Things to Know

You may hear speakers from the U.K. or U.S.A., as well as Canada, New Zealand, Australia, or South Africa. Some students practice listening exclusively to American TV or BBC News and so they are confused by the other accents. However, English is an international language and you should be familiar with these accents at the very least. The speakers will speak clearly and in standard English, so there is no new slang or technical jargon to encounter.

The IELTS exam is, to some extent, also a test of your thinking skills. Sometimes there are answered designed to trick you. It is not always straightforward. You may have to think carefully about a question and the answer may appear to be one of two possible answers, but only a very careful analysis of the language would reveal the correct one. In these cases, it is best to take a guess and move quickly on. You don’t have time to dwell on the difficult ones. Make sure you get the easy stuff right first.

Strategies for Success in IELTS Listening

The gist of it is this: practice is absolutely vital. Additionally, you need to be familiar with hearing English, with exam techniques, and with listening for specific details in both conversations and monologues. Get used to the format of the IELTS exam and the wording used in listening questions, and then on exam day you must read these instructions very carefully. It is easy to make small, silly mistakes.

IELTS Listening: Lesson Plan. Free IELTS Listening Course

This is the breakdown of the Free IELTS Listening course in this website.

You can click on individual links below to jump to specific sections of the course.

IELTS Part 1: Listening

You will only hear it once, but don’t panic!

The recording will only be played one time during the IELTS exam because this is how we listen in reality: we can’t always ask somebody to repeat what they said, and we certainly can’t ask a professor to repeat his lecture just for us. However, in natural interactions, we have certain information that we are looking for and so we can focus on finding that information. If you are in a train station and you hear a platform announcement obviously you don’t try to remember every train on every platform, you concentrate on your train and the platform that is relevant for you.

Read ahead and anticipate

The IELTS provides you with time to look at the questions before you hear the recording so you can identify the information you are listening for. You should use this time to actively try and predict either the answer or the structure of the answer (whether it’s a name, a date, some adjective-noun combination, a length of time, a distance, etc.) so you will recognize the answer when you hear it. For answers that require you to write a word or phrase, the words in the question will be paraphrased but the speaker will say the exact words you will need to write as the answer.

The questions are answered in order

The organization of the listening test will help you to follow the material. All of the questions will be answered in order and the speakers will guide you through the material by saying key phrases from the headings. Use this “signposted” information to help you follow the recording and anticipate the next question! You must be ready for each question if you want to get a high mark.

Manage your time wisely

There is plenty of time to read all of the material, if you know when to use it. In the first part of the listening test, you only have a small amount of information to read. Keep reading! Look ahead to see what other types of questions will be coming up. After part one is finished you will hear, “That is the end of part one, you will now have half a minute to check your answers.” How can you check your answers, when you won’t hear the recording again? Write down any answers you haven’t already written, and then use this time to start reading the next section. Read ahead at every opportunity, because it will be very difficult to read all of the material in part four if you wait until they tell you.

Write your answers in the book, then transfer them at the end

Always write your answers in the question book. You will have 10 minutes after the recording is finished to transfer your answers which is more than enough time (4 answers per minute). As you copy your answers to the answer sheet, check the spelling and grammar carefully (a common mistake is with singulars and plurals) because these errors will cost you the mark even if you have the correct information.

IELTS Listening: Maps & Plans

Updated: Apr 20, 2022

The IELTS Listening sample test in this lesson will teach you how to answer map and plan labelling questions. These come up regularly in the exam and are particularly common in Section 2.

The subject for plan questions will typically be a tour of a specific building such as a hotel or museum, or the description of a place. In map questions, the speaker will often talk about proposed changes to a location.

Your task is to listen to the recording and identify different areas, features, or rooms. You will often be given a list of words from which to choose the correct answers. If no list is given, you will have to identify the answers from the recording.

Many students find this one of the easiest question types to answer because the graphic will contain lots of clues as to the missing words, especially in the labels already present.

Here are two questions to give you an idea of what to expect. The first IELTS Listening test sample is a map question, whilst the second is a plan question.

IELTS Listening Sample Test 1

assignment plan ielts listening

In the recording for this sample question, the chairman of the Highways Committee is explaining the new traffic regulations and parking arrangements proposed for Granford at a public meeting.

IELTS Listening Sample Test 2

assignment plan ielts listening

For this question, the speaker is the librarian of a new town library. They are talking to a group of people who are visiting the library.

We’ll be using this second example to practice the strategy and tips I’m about to show you.

Strategy & Tips

You will have a short time to prepare before the speakers begin talking. Use this time to familiarise yourself with the question and focus your mind on what you need to listen out for.

1) Read the instructions

Read the instructions very carefully as the wording, and what you have to do, vary in this type of question. For example, the instructions for the first sample question state:

Write the correct letter, A–I, next to Questions 14–20

So, you must write a letter next to each word in the answer list.

In the second example they state:

Choose FIVE answers from the box and write the correct letters next to questions 11–15.

In this case, you will write your answer on the plan itself.

Very important: Write only the letter (A–I) on the plan. Do not write the word. If you do, your answer will be marked wrong.

So, if answer 11 was ’computers’, your answer would be 11 C , not 11 computers .

2) Read the labels & title

Learn as much as you can about the map or plan from the existing labels, and the words in the answer list if there is one. Some maps and plans will also have a title which is another big clue as to the context of the question and what the recording will be about.

For example, the question in IELTS Listening Sample Test 1 above, has the title ‘Proposed traffic changes in Granford’. Knowing this should bring a few ideas to mind as to the sort of information that will be included in the audio text.

The more familiar you are with the vocabulary and the layout of the graphic, the easier it will be to understand and follow what the speaker says.

If there is no words list, try and predict what type of word the answers will be from the context of the plan or map, for example, is it a room, a building, a street, a feature such as a pond or a facility such as a public toilet.

Generally, the speaker will begin their talk by introducing themselves and the subject or purpose of the talk so this will also help you to understand the context.

3) Visualisation

One of the skills needed to answer map and plan questions successfully is to be able to visualise what the place being described looks like.

We use maps and plans in everyday life so your brain will already be used to doing this, although you normally do it subconsciously without even thinking about it.

In the precious seconds you have for preparation, imagine that you are standing in the location represented on the graphic. What can you see around you?

For our sample question, imagine that you are at the entrance to the library and then picture yourself walking inside. Note the different rooms you see as identified by the labels on the plan. Try this now.

assignment plan ielts listening

Even a few seconds spent doing this will help you to follow the information or directions given by the speaker and to identify the correct answers.

You can do a similar visualisation with a map question. Imagine yourself standing at a particular point and picture what you can see around you, noting the different buildings and other features. Try this with the sample question.

assignment plan ielts listening

4) Answer order

The answers will come in the same order in the recording as they are listed in the question so, for our sample question, you'll hear answer 11 first, then answer 12 and so on. This makes it easier to pick out the answers than if they were in a random order.

5) Vocabulary

To do well in map and plan questions, you need to understand the language of location and direction.

Location – where something is in relation to another object or place.

Direction – the position towards which someone moves or faces

Common vocabulary of location:

in front of

across from

Common vocabulary of direction:

go straight on

6) Synonyms and paraphrasing

In all types of Listening questions, you need to listen out for synonyms and paraphrasing. As you’re listening to the recording, remind yourself that you are not looking for the exact words as in the question but the same meaning.

So, for example, if an answer is ‘ reference books ’ the speaker might say,

In the corner, next to the history section, you’ll find ten shelves of encyclopedias, dictionaries and directories .

We’ll look at the synonyms and paraphrasing that have been used in our practice question when we review the answers.

7) Watch out for distractors

The examiners may try and catch you out with distractors. A distractor is a word or a phrase that changes or corrects the original piece of information given. So, you may be given an answer and then have it taken away again.

Here are some sample sentences containing distractors. I’ve highlighted the relevant words.

The shop next to the bakery was a newsagent but it’s now been replaced by a charity shop.

In the original design, the café and bookshop were next to each other. However , the plans were changed to locate the bookshop by the exit.

When the alterations are carried out, the storeroom will become an office. No, sorry . That’s been altered. It will be the new staffroom.

The use of ‘but’ and ‘however’ are particularly common distractors but there are many different words and phrases that can be used to change or correct a piece of information so be alert for them.

8) Guess if necessary

My final tip is to never leave a blank space on the answer sheet. If you miss an answer, take an educated guess. This gives you at least some chance of getting it right. Don’t stress about a missed answer or it will affect your ability to answer the next set of questions. Just make your choice and move on.

Writing a Plan: IELTS Listening Practice Question

In this post, we will look at plans   in the listening test .

Students will have to understand a description of a place and follow directions. You will probably be familiar with some of these plans, as you see them when you visit galleries, museums and other places like schools.

In section 2 you will probably hear a person talking about a topic that is not academic. It is usually someone talking about an event or showing them around a building .

The plans below are a bit more complex than those that you will see in the IELTS Listening Test. When you listen to the recording during the test, look out for the language of location . For example, next to, near, opposite, in front of etc.

TIP >> During the test make notes and/or mark the way on the question paper before transferring your answers at the end.

TIP >> Make sure you spell your answers correctly.

Question Example

Label the plan below.

Choose EIGHT answers from the box and write the correct letters A-I next to questions 11-15 .

The Language of Location

To understand the description of a plan and to locate certain places you need to understand the language of location .

You should also be familiar with prepositions of place , such as in, at, on, by, next to, beside, near, between, among, behind, in front of, under, below, over, above, across, through, to, into, towards, onto and from.

For example, if we look at the plan above;

  • Gallery 1 is next to gallery 2.
  • Gallery 2 is beside gallery 3.
  • Gallery 6 is in front of gallery 7.

Labelling A Plan

In order to be able to label a plan, you must listen for a description or directions on the recording. You will most likely hear a person describing a plan or showing people around somewhere. You may be given a list of possible answers in a box or not.

The information you hear will be in the same order as the recording. You should study the plan carefully before listening so that you have an idea of where the options may be.

TIP >> You can cross out any options that you think are wrong and if you can’t decide between two answers, write both down and make a choice later.

Label the plan.

Write the correct letter. A-E , next to questions 11-15 .

Distractors

A distractor is when you are given information that is wrong . This can lead you to choose the incorrect answer. They are common in the IELTS Listening tests, as they test your ability to choose the right information for the answers, by ignoring the wrong information.

The distractors will try to  trick you into selecting the wrong answer , so you must listen carefully  for specific information .

The distractors for this type of task might be more rooms etc on the plan or extra options in the list of possible answers.

Paraphrasing

The questions will paraphrase  the information from the recording, or a speaker in the recording may paraphrase, so you will have to use your knowledge of synonyms , noticing any keywords and terms. Recognising and using synonyms shows the examiner that you have good vocabulary knowledge . Paraphrasing is a skill that is needed in all parts of the test.

Review And Strategy

TIP >>  The plans, maps and diagrams questions do not follow the order that you hear the information in the recording. Therefore it is important that you read the questions and familiarise yourself with the plan or map you are looking at before you start listening.

TIP >> Study the map and see where things are before listening to the recording. Marks can be lost if you do not do this and read the questions properly.

TIP >> Listen carefully for information but be wary of distractors.

TIP >> Make notes on the paper and draw lines to destinations etc. This may help you to locate information.
