This study tries to identify, define, and analyze the coding techniques that the grounded theory researchers follow when they develop the qualitative research. Grounded theory is a qualitative research analysis that systematically collects and analyzes data to develop a new theory on human behavior in social welfare perceptions. It also tries to discuss coding method, coding cycle, theoretical sensitivity, theoretical sampling, theoretical saturation, etc. Usually, a code is a word or short phrases that symbolically allocate a summative, salient, and essence capturing for a portion of visual data. In qualitative grounded theory research coding plays an important role that enables the researchers to identify, organize, and build new theory that is grounded in data. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of codes, coding, and coding methods that form a qualitative grounded theory.

This chapter discusses some ways qualitative data can be organized and analyzed systematically and rigorously to produce new knowledge. We begin with some comments on how to make sense of your data, and explore practices of “memoing,” concept mapping, and coding. Much of the subsequent discussion revolves around coding as a process of distilling data and identifying themes. The chapter reviews different types of codes and their uses, as well as several ways to get started with coding in a qualitative project. Specifically, a distinction is drawn between descriptive codes, which are category labels, and analytic codes, which are thematic, theoretical, or in some way emerge from the analysis. The building of a “codebook” is also discussed, stressing the importance of looking critically at the codes themselves, identifying ways in which they relate, minimizing overlap between codes, and strengthening the analytical potential of the coding structure. Finally, several related issues are covered, such as coding with others, the use of computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS), and integrating coding and mapping.

This article demonstrates the process of coding textual data, using QualCoder, a free and open-source software tool for supporting the qualitative data analysis process. The aim is to introduce novice qualitative researchers and undergraduate students of qualitative methods to the process of open coding in a clear and concise way. The systematic coding of the empirical data is a crucial first step in many popular qualitative methods like Thematic Analysis or Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The initial coding phase is a prerequisite for analyzing and making sense of the data. By using QualCoder, the researcher utilizes a dependable, efficient, and easily accessible tool to work with coding without losing transparency, rigor, and depth in the process. In an attempt to help find meaning within qualitative data, researchers commonly start by coding their data. There are a number of coding systems available to researchers and this reflexive account explores my reflections on the use of two such techniques. As part of a larger investigation, two pilot studies were undertaken as a means to examine the relative merits of open coding and template coding for examining transcripts. This article does not describe the research project per se but attempts to step back and offer a reflexive account of the development of data coding tools. Here I reflect upon and evaluate the two data coding techniques that were piloted, and discuss how using appropriate aspects of both led to the development of my final data coding approach. My exploration found there was no clear-cut ‘best’ option but that the data coding techniques needed to be reflexively-aligned to meet the specific needs of my project. This reflection suggests that, when coding qualitative data, researchers should be methodologically thoughtful when they attempt to apply any data coding technique; that they do not assume pre-established tools are aligned to their particular paradigm; and that they consider combining and refining established techniques as a means to define their own specific codes.

A challenging step in any qualitative research project is data coding and analysis. If the data coding is done appropriately, it will lead the researchers to develop patterns or themes and to make final inferences about the research problem. As such, qualitative researchers are supposed to take systematically informed steps and procedures to perform qualitative data coding and analysis. However, this is not as easy as it might be thought, and even published articles might fall short of providing a thorough explanation of their methods and procedures, making it difficult for other researchers, especially early career researchers, to aim for replication of the study. This article presents a review of the methods and data coding and analysis procedures in the f ield of L2 writing as a case in point. We scrutinized and analyzed all 168 articles with a qualitative orientation published in the Journal of Second Language Writing (JSLW) over its lifecycle. We present the results and discuss some articles to illustrate how L2 writing researchers handled qualitative data coding and analysis and showcase problematic areas. The outcomes of the review and analysis, including the showcase articles, provide some tips and guidelines for prospective L2 writing researchers and other stakeholders more broadly.
