The relations between the generations were always complicated. The older people always indicate that it their time the situation was different and people behaved in the different way. At the same period, the younger generation says about the impact of the modern tendencies, changes of the way of life that give an opportunity to claim that the younger generation is more advanced.

However, as it clearly seen though the history, such attitude of the generations to each other was always the same. Therefore, although the technical facilities, cultural and economical changes impact the society, it is possible to claim that there are no significant changes in the relations between the generations, they are neither improving, nor getting worse.

Analyzing the cultural aspect within the conflict between generations, it is necessary to admit that such cultural issues as art, music, fashion have a tendency of the permanent change. Thereby, it is obvious that the different generations which do not have the same tastes and fashion, cannot understand each other’s needs. And especially this aspect is sharp within the relations between teenagers and their parents.

Today, the tradition hierarchy of family is different than two centuries ago. Elder members of family feel themselves as the intruders. From the other side, their children can easily send parents to the social houses. During the past century, the patterns of solidarity in friend and family relations had been changed (Allan 2008).

The transformation of the family and friendship aspects influences the Western communities since 1970s. People got more freedom and, as the result, the gap in the relations between young people and their parents increased (Thompson 1998).

From the other hand, the flexibility in the constructing of personal life and relations within the social groups is also increased. There is possible to say about the sharp conflict which is concerned with different parts of life and particularly with economic and cultural aspects. Young adults and elder people have the different possibilities to find a job, to increase their financial status according to the current tendencies in the society and they have different cultural tastes and traditional values.

However, although the cultural and economical changes impact the society and the generation gap is significant, it is necessary to claim that the relations between the generations are neither improving, nor getting worse. The historical knowledge provides the demonstration that such situation was always actual and topical.

Essay on Generation Gap: The age gap between two groups of people with dissimilar thinking is referred to as a generation gap. The term is commonly used to ascertain the changes between children and parents as they belong to two generations. Differences in age, thinking, mannerisms, values and morality are natural as time flows. With the passage of time, the influences on the present youngsters differ from their elders and create a generation gap.

‘Dad, You will never understand my point’, ‘Granny, you are too old to see through my perspective’, ‘ Kids these days have lost their family values in the name of advancements and modern ideologies’, ‘Mamma, I wish you were cool enough to use social media platforms’. Many such arguments have become common in today’s world, and the reason behind it is well referred to as – the Generation Gap. As obvious by the term itself, generation gap refers to the gap or difference in ideologies, opinion, beliefs and outlook between people belonging to different generations.

Origin and Different Generations

Generation Gap is said to have been originated in the 1960’s. During that time, the younger generation, which is now referred to as the ‘baby boomers’ showed a significant difference in their beliefs and opinions compared to their parents’ generation projected and believed into. There are several segregation’s made to make distinctions between generations. This segregation was proposed keeping in mind mainly the American population; however, it’s a broad division. It is applicable to other nations too. Names were given to the major groups. Example:- Baby Boomers ( they are the individuals born between 1946 and 1964 who are associated with the rejection of traditional values.)

Then came Gen X. (Individuals born between 1960-1980) were children born during a time of shifting societal values. More divorces were reported which, according to sociologists, could be due to reduced adult supervision. This was the generation obsessed with music’s pop culture, especially hip-hop. After that, people born between the early 1980’s to mid 1990’s are referred to as the Gen Y or Millennial. They are associated with Narcissistic personalities and diverse views about polity, history, culture and economy. And finally, the generation born between the mid 1990’s to mid 2000’s are the Gen Z babies. Most of them have used the internet at a young age and are comfortable with technology and social media.

Reasons for Emergence of Generation Gap

It might have emerged when the younger generation started challenging the primitive thoughts and beliefs and raising their voices against the irrational superstitions and rituals thriving in society. The people belonging to Gen Y and Gen Z were more open and brave enough to put forward their personal choices and not just blindly follow the elders’ suggestions.

The gap widened when the older people decided to stick with their ancient perspectives rather than adapting with the changing social environment while the younger generations started building on their fresh perspectives about the existing and upcoming social situations. Communication gap is one of the significant reasons for the onset of this gap and continuously widens the rift between generations.

Problems Associated with Generation Gap

The increased misunderstanding between the old and new generation tends to result in frustration and unhealthy, rebellious and argumentative behaviour. The most disturbing element is the communication gap between different generations. The Gen Z generation today or better say the ‘ Tech-kids’ are busy with the technological innovations of their times like mobile phones and computers. This bothers the older people as they feel neglected when given less time and attention. The elders move to solitude and become adamant, whereas the younger ones become stubborn and frustrated.

How to Bridge the Gap?

There should be an inclusion of the older generation through communication and participation. The young ones should make older people value human advancement and ensure them that respect and the honesty towards culture and morality are being nurtured in the new generation. There should be an environment of mutual learning where young ones patiently teach the use of technology to old generation people and learn good virtues in return.

Due to the generation gap, there has been a lot of change in this world like India used to have large families in which more than one family used to live together, but now people’s perceptions have changed and they want privacy, due to which most people in small families.

They live and do not like to live with their parents.

Just as everything has its benefits and losses, similarly the generation gap also has its advantages and disadvantages.

If this does not happen then our world will not grow, although we can reduce the damage caused by it to some extent.

In today’s scenario, the world is changing quite rapidly.

The field of science and technology is also getting more and at the same time, people’s lives their thoughts and ways of living and needs are changing.

As a result, the perceptions of people of a particular generation do not match those of the second generation, i.e. they are different and this is called the generation gap or generation gap.

How is the Generation Gap Apparent?

People belonging to different generations are given different names such as those who happened before independence are called traditionalists.

Also those who were born between 1950- 1965 are called Baby Boomers.

With this, those who were born between 1965- 1980 are called Generation X and the people who were paid after this are Generation Y.

The following points indicate the generation gap:

1. Joint Family and Small Family:

People of earlier generations often used to live in a joint family i.e. more than one family lived together in the same house but with changing times the situation of youth is changing and all of them have started giving preference to privacy.

Families are emerging, everyone wants to maintain privacy, due to which they prefer to stay away from a joint family and even they do not consider it right to keep their parents with them.

2. Language:

Due to the generation gap, changes are also seen in the language being used.

Like Hindi people who used to speak before Independence, now they do not speak Hindi, there has been a lot of changes in it, as well as many new words have been added in the language.

So if a person from the previous generation disputes the youth of today, then some words are constrained by his understanding, which disrupts dialogue.

3. Gesture:

People of previous generations were loyal to their officers and they had no hesitation in working with the directions from them, but today’s young generation is totally different from this.

Today everyone wants to open their own business and no one wants to work under anyone else.

For this reason, there has been a lot of change in this generation compared to the previous generation and for this reason many new entrepreneurs have been created.

4. Behavior towards women:

Earlier women used to live mainly inside the house and they used to have full burden of household work.

With this, only men were allowed to work outside and women used to handle the housework.

But now society’s attitude towards women has changed and now they can do any work they want or go to any field.

In the new era they have got freedom from the shackles of the house.

If two generations do not match each other but if one generation imposes its views on the other generation then it is a loss from the generation gap.

We should avoid doing this because doing so increases tensions between two generations and often leads to confrontations.

These people are called traditionalists, they are 70 years of age or older and prefer to live a normal life.

Baby Boomers:

The term is used for people who were born independent but were born before 1965.

People of this generation are hard workers but most people do not depend on response.

They also need money and publicity as a reward for completing their work.

Since most of them do not live comfortably, they make sure that their children get everything they want.

Therefore, they take full care of the children and want to be appreciated.

They want their officers and children to understand that they are valuable and necessary.

The lack of all these things creates dissatisfaction between them.

Generation X:

The term Generation X is used for people who were born between 1965 and 1980.

They like to take leave from time to time and these people do not like to work by the rules, they like to do things in their own way.

These people had seen their parents working, which affected them badly and now they like to spend time with their family.

Generation Y:

The term is used for individuals who were born between 1981 and 1999.

Most of them have just entered working age, this group is interested in engaging in meaningful work and is also forward in giving their feedback towards their work.

People of this generation are quite creative, they like to work with creative individuals and in places where their creativity is allowed to be explored.

It is a source of inspiration for them and keeps them alive, this is a generation that gets bored very quickly.

Unlike traditionalists, they change their jobs quite frequently, they change their jobs several times a year.

They work where they are employed according to their talent.

My family is one such example.

My parents and I form a nuclear family. I followed my parents’ religious and cultural beliefs as a child. Although as I grew in age and cognitive functioning, I began to question their beliefs and practices. While my parents did not respond kindly, my questions never ceased.

My worldview became increasingly modern with the intake of social media and pop culture. On the other hand, my parents still found it challenging to navigate technology. One would expect the generation gap to pull people apart in such a case. Except with my family, it did not quite go that way.

Regardless of the different worlds my parents and I were growing into, we never stopped communicating openly. It was one of the first and most essential rules established in our house. The second was always to respect people around us, irrespective of age. So, even when we had differing opinions, we would take the time to listen and then reason what the logically or morally right stance was. We would understand where the conflict stemmed from and each compromise to meet the other halfway.

My parents, owing to their age and experience, helped me resolve many problems that otherwise seem unsolvable. In exchange, I help them understand the technology and modern lifestyles. So, while generation gaps exist, we must not let them alienate us from the people we love.

No matter how modern or traditional, all parents have a mental image of how they want their child to be. They are usually uncompromising about their stances and end up using their age as a factor to have their way. This creates a lack of understanding and communication in the family, causing one or both sides to feel alienated and side-lined. Over time, the generation gap widens and leaves no room for repair.

It is natural to want to live your life by your principles. However, it should not come at the price of essential relationships. Having diverse views, ideas, and opinions can instead add to the family and help everyone grow individually. There will always be misunderstandings, but listening to people with empathy and cultivating a broader outlook can offset the generation gap and re-establish peace.

Well, it seems to be true that every generation on this earth comes with its own rules and thoughts and therefore every generation disagrees on certain things and beliefs which according to them do not make sense for the present.

Generation gap can be seen in the form of language such as the new generation uses its own shortcuts and language to communicate while old people usually stick to their native language and consider this shortcut language absurd and meaningless.

Then comes the workspace changes, earlier people used to work with hands and all the work was done manually. However, now the workplaces are equipped with important facilities such as computers, fitness areas, sports facilities, entertainment and much more. Also, children nowadays like to play games on phones and tablets and usually spend their time on televisions and laptops, but children of earlier generation used to play outdoor games and entertain themselves with books and comics. Our parents and grandparents consider this scenario a huge setback in the success of the children nowadays.

Other than this, clothing and lifestyle of the people nowadays have changed and they carry western outfits as their style statements whereas earlier people used to stick to their own culture and attire.

Well, there are various reasons behind the generation gap including advancement in technology, high competition, ineffective communication, old beliefs, and breaking of the joint family into nuclear ones. Usually, children living in the nuclear family do not get a chance to interact with their grandparents due to which they lose moral values as their parents are working and don’t have much time to sit and talk to them about their culture and traditions.

In conclusion, this generation gap can be bridged if all the generations try to understand each other and agree on certain things that are beneficial for their family as well as for the nation. A balance is required to keep all the things in its place so as to grow and prosper successfully.
