In this essay, the author writes a letter expressing his love, tenderness, and regret toward his girlfriend. He explains how much he loves and appreciates her and believes he is truly lucky for her being in his life. He also briefly recalls the moment they met and how it changed him forever. He suggests carefully reflecting on the situation and assessing why exactly one would miss an ex; if the breakup was done out of impulse, one could still return to his ex. He also stresses the importance of conversation with the ex, a loved one, or even a counselor.

“He starts communicating with his girlfriend in a more respectful manner. He overcame his fear of not being able to get his own child and as a result he addressed the situation with his girlfriend and is now willing to try adoption. Therapy has helped peter to make an adjustment of his life, he no longer drinks and party much but rather he spends more time with his girlfriend helping in household chores, attending social gathering with friends and focus on his company advancement.”

Andrews writes about his friend Peter, who recently discovered he was infertile. Understandably, Peter is dismayed at the news and responds by isolating himself, drinking alcohol frequently, and lashing out at his girlfriend. He was stressing about a situation he could not control; however, after therapy sessions, he was able to reconcile and support his girlfriend. In addition, he was willing to adopt a child, as his girlfriend had previously suggested. 

As its name suggests, an age gap relationship is one with an age difference of 10 or more years between partners . Many people frown upon these relationships, believing that men often take much younger girlfriends and exploit them. Decide on your stance regarding age gap relationships and defend it, providing adequate evidence, including a rebuttal of the opposing position. 

No one wants their relationship to end. However, it can be hard to say no to your partner, to the point that it may be detrimental to your mental health. For example, if you feel the situation with your girlfriend has become toxic, you may not be able to function correctly out of stress. It seems to me, based on what I have heard from older people and what I have learned about society in even the recent past, the concept of the relationship is a fairly recent one. That is, the word itself was not often used; people had friends, family, business associates, and romantic or sexual partners, and all these types of relationships were usually identified specifically as to how they figured in a person’s life.

More importantly, especially in terms of modern usage, romantic interests went by the name of “boyfriend”, “girlfriend”, “fiancee”, or “that person I’m dating”. This factor of other means of address immediately strikes me as an interesting part of the definition of “relationship”, because the older terms were all about roles people were playing. A girlfriend is a person; a relationship is a thing someone is in with a girlfriend or boyfriend, and I am beginning to wonder how much of how we define “relationship” has to do with this stature we give to this non-existent thing.

Today, a relationship is usually presented as a fairly serious romantic process. It seems to be the thing people are in that is beyond a dating connection, and something removed from friendship. It is clearly something that many people aspire to have, or be in, and yesterday’s complaint about not having someone special is now expressed as a desire to “be in a real relationship”. It is almost as though we have taken the people out of the activity, and this is where I think the definition runs into real trouble.

Most anyone you would ask today would give you a definition of a relationship along the lines referred to. They would say that it is a meaningful connection between two people, and one with potential for a lasting future. That potential is also a large part of how relationships are perceived today; people still date, but when they begin referring to being in a relationship, it means that one or both concerned parties are thinking in terms of a future together. Above all, the word is never used to suggest something not serious, unless it is identified as a “sexual relationship” or “business relationship”, or another way that indicates boundaries.

This makes me think about investing any single word with too much power, and I am inclined to think that people, in defining “relationship” as an actual thing, create many problems for themselves. As I see it, the word “relationship” has taken on a strangely specific meaning, and people have a certain idea regarding what a relationship must translate to. It is very much like the word “change”; in modern life, change is viewed as a positive thing, but the reality is that change can be anything at all that is different. It is a process or an occurrence completely independent of the good or the bad it leaves behind, but many people insist on seeing it as, somehow, automatically good.

It may be that people are merely eager to believe the best of all possibilities, and this is why both “relationship” and “change are typically viewed as desirable things. I think, however, that there is a danger in this kind of thinking because, again, an activity is being invested with actual value it does not inherently possess. The danger here with “change” is obvious; when change is perceived as a fundamentally good thing, it is turned to when things might be better unchanged.

With relationships, I believe the danger is of a different kind, and it goes directly to that vague concept of what a relationship should be. Obviously, people romantically involved want the romance to be uplifting and good, and there is nothing wrong with the assumption that “relationship”, as expressed by most people, means “good relationship”. However, when an idea is given a shape or form independent of actual circumstances, it becomes something of a goal, even though the actual making up of it cannot be known until it happens. It used to be that a man might be unhappy because he did not have a girlfriend, and that is perfectly human and natural. Today’s men, however, are complaining because they are not in relationships, and that is different because they are more referring to some sort of idealized state of being, or romance.

Plainly speaking, men and women think about romantic partners all the time. When asked to go into detail, they can usually give a fairly clear idea of what their romantic ideal is, as a person. This is vastly different, however, from the popular mentality of desiring a solid relationship because, ironically, that concept requires nothing more than a vague ambition to be happy and fulfilled with somebody else. It is the thing two people forge together, and it carries a weight in today’s culture no vague concept should have. As a relationship cannot begin to exist until the connection between two people begins to take on its own, unique characteristics, it has no meaning at all until then.

Unfortunately, people seem to believe that the relationship is somehow waiting “out there” for them, to stumble into with the right person. This then creates a further sense in the popular mind that good relationships are being enjoyed by everyone else, when the reality is that “relationship” is a simple word that has been twisted far beyond its scope or abilities. This can be seen simply by breaking down the components: they are two romantic partners, and all the individual and combined benefits and disadvantages each brings to the other. That is all, and “relationship” is nothing more than the catch-all word assigned to the interaction. It has no definition, really, because it is a changing, unpredictable result of whatever two people are sharing at any given time.

What Do You Understand By True Boyfriend And Girlfriend Love?

A true boyfriend-girlfriend relationship is a beautiful thing to be in. when teenage sweethearts take their journey forward together and make it work for a lifetime, it is the sweetest thing to witness. It takes two to tango, and that holds true for every relationship. To make a relationship work, it takes quality time, compassion, togetherness, empathy, patience from both the partners. One alone can not make the relationship grow strong. There are signs that show that you are into a true boyfriend-girlfriend relationship. Following are the checkpoints:

1. There is Happiness

When it is said happiness, it is not happiness because of something or some gesture. It is pure happiness which comes from the mere presence of your partner, on listening to their voice after a long hectic day at work or when you look at them smile or laugh. 2. Hatred and anger do not last

Check if both of you are open to share things and talks with each other. If you are able to share intimate details without hesitation and are willing to talk about issues and things that have been troubling you, it is a healthy sign which shows your boyfriend or girlfriend is into you, and it is not just a casual fling that is going on.

“Give respect to earn respect”. If you or your boyfriend/girlfriend are bad-mouthing each other behind each other’s backs, you might not want to be in such a relationship. Not only your partner, you must not be bad-mouthing each other’s families also. And when it comes to being in each other’s presence, you should be able to respect each other, talk politely, give each other the space that they need and yet be close and compassionate.

5. Time is not a constraint

Time is an important checkpoint for every relationship. It doesn’t matter whether you are giving quantity time or not; whatever time you spend with each other should be quality time and should be undivided. No phone calls, no friends, no social apps until otherwise specified for a certain task. If you are able to enjoy your time with each other, you surely are into a true boyfriend-girlfriend relationship which is up for keeps.

6. Your actions speak

You both promise each other something and then forget to do so. Once or twice it is acceptable, and exceptions can be made, but if this a habit, it shows that you do not care for the feelings of other persons. Saying “I Love You” for a hundred times and failing to show that in words is not what is expected in a true relationship. Your actions should be speaking louder than your words. If you are sorry, mean it and prove in the coming days that you won't be repeating something on a similar line ever again. So is the case of every feeling that you express in words. After all, feelings are supposed to be expressed and understood and not merely to be spoken

7. Distance does not matter

When you are in a true girlfriend boyfriend relationship, it doesn’t matter how far apart you stay from each other. Especially in the era of technology, when there are hundreds of apps to keep you connected through video calling. The distance and the longing for each other strengthen your relationship if it is true in nature.

8. There is no Me but We

You realize that you are together through thick and thin, and your actions are not “I” centric. You care for your boyfriend or girlfriend and ensure that they are not hurt by whatever you are doing. This goes vice versa.

9. Achievements are celebrated

When one of you achieves something, it is celebrated and does not result into jealousy from the other partner. You feel good to see them happy and joyous, and you become a part of their celebration as if it were your own.

10. Growth is mutual

The underlying strength of the relationship is that you help each other grow. You are the strength behind each other’s success and not the reason behind each other;s failure. You help in growing, and there are moments, especially when it comes to teaching virtues, where you stand by each other, motivate towards doing what is right, and then grow together.

If all these plus signs are visible in your boyfriend or girlfriend, you are on the right track with your relationship, and there are high chances that your relationship might go a long way. Once you find such a relationship, set couple goals for yourself and adhere to them. What’s the best way to refer to a romantic partner.

One of the oddities of the English language is that though many words have multiple synonyms, and we have words for many things we rarely refer to, one of the most ubiquitous concepts in American society has no name: There’s no ideal term for an unmarried party in a romantic relationship.

This glaring omission is partly due to the fact that open societal acknowledgment of unmarried parties — let’s just go with the acronym UPIARR for now — especially those who have no intention of marrying, is a relatively recent phenomenon, but it seems that our culture should have settled on a satisfactory label by now.

The reigning placeholders to describe UPIARRs, in the absence of universally accepted terms, are boyfriend and girlfriend . Despite the fact that my fellow UPIARR and I are AARP members, we have no problem with the terminology — the juvenile connotations of these words is obsolete — but other people, especially those of a certain age, are uncomfortable with them. Unfortunately, the more mature-sounding “man friend” and “woman friend” are clumsy and imprecise.

Paramour (French for, literally, “for love”) is unfortunately unsuitable because its connotation is of illicit love. Lover implies a focus on sex, and most pet terms ( darling , honey , sweetheart , and the like) are too intimate for some social situations; informal phrases like “my guy” and “my girl” have the same disadvantage. Beau (from the French word for “beautiful”) is inoffensive but seems too glib and, despite the etymology, is an exclusively male term.

Mistress has a longstanding connotation of “a kept woman,” though for some time, because modern women can more easily maintain financial independence, the term has referred simply to a woman in a romantic or sexual relationship with a married man. But this word has no utility outside of references to marital infidelity.

Suitor is too stiff, does not imply an established relationship, and traditionally denotes a man. “Significant other” and “life partner” both have an artificial, passionless taint, as if inspired by bureaucratic policy. “Domestic partner” shares that disadvantage while also assuming cohabitation.

The prevailing alternative to boyfriend and girlfriend is partner , though the use of this word in other contexts, such as business, makes it unhelpfully ambiguous. “Life partner” imposes the implication of a lifelong relationship.

My favorite humorous designation is “undocumented husband/wife,” but even that implies that the ultimate goal of the relationship is marriage and it isn’t of much use in straightforward contexts.

In most social situations, the simplest solution is to introduce your fellow UPIARR by name only and let nonverbal signals do the rest. However, this website is about writing, not about oral communication, and effective terminology depends on the context of the written communication, so writers must make their own decisions about how to refer to their own UPIARRs or others in that role.

German has a good, although not quite perfect, word for this ambiguous relationship. Lebensgefährte (male) / Lebensgefährtin (female). Literally – “life companion” or “co-traveler in life”

My UPIARR and I were together for 21 years before we married this March – we used to refer to each other as “my partner”, “my other half” or “my husband/wife” depending on the circumstances.

“My other half” seems to me to denote both commitment and love – without necessarily indicating marriage, and would be my preferred option in a neutral situation. It can also be used in the second person “please bring your other half to the party” without having to be certain of the person’s marital situation, or indeed sexual preference.

[I was intrigued that you did not mention “significant other”. Here in the UK we have been led to believe that that is a term used in the US – I personally find it pretentious, so I’m pleased you did not use it!]

Did I miss it? “Significant other” or “significant partner” seems to be quit prevelant as a clear and acceptable reference for any coupling of people. Once mostly used in same sex relationships I see it used for straight, gay, and lesbian couples.

I was therefore surprised when I read in the third paragraph of today’s DailyWritingTips the phrase, “…the juvenile connotations of these words is obsolete…” English is not my first language, so I may be missing something here, but surely ‘juvenile connotations’ ARE obsolete (not IS)?

This is a puzzling question and although there doesn’t seem to be a good answer by the end of the article, I appreciate the back and forth banter you create to display all of the current labels and their shortcomings. Perhaps it is time to invent a new word.

Your last paragraph sums it up well. In other words, there is no right word. As you note, it is only in recent years that such relationships don’t bear a touch of scandal. Language can take many decades to evolve. I’d mention that for now, “partner” is the right word for same-sex relationships.

Another inappropriate term that unmarried couples use is fiancé/fiancée. One is tempted to ask, “So where’s the big event taking place?” The two then stumble and mumble. “Boyfriend/girlfriend” is what they really mean, but they think that the French-derived word sounds more sophisticated, perhaps. But fiancé/fiancée means “engaged to be married,” of course. For cohabiting couples who have no plans to legally tie the knot, it doesn’t work.

How about “loving companion”?

This can be a minefield if people don’t have a sense of humor abot it. I remember in the 70s someone invented the term POSSLQ — pronounced posselcue — which stood for Person of the Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters. It was somehow innately laughable, dunno why. Like “Tuesday.” Tuesday is innately funny, viz. Terry Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters — “When shall we three meet again?” — “Umm, let’s see, I think I can do next Tuesday…” It just wouldn’t be as funny if she said “next Wednesday,” or “Sunday afternoon.”

Anyway, that has nothing to do with the subject at hand. POSSLQ died a swift and ignominious death. It could be revisited, resurrected, and reconstituted for PSSSLQ, “pisselcue,” Person of the Same Sex Sharing &tc., I suppose.

You left out ‘spouse’. In Canada, common-law relationships are recognized by law and the term spouse is used for the partners in most legal documents. However, I do love the ‘undocumented’ option.

No mention of “POSSLQ”? Charles Osgood’s poem commemorated for all eternity the Census Bureau’s term for “person of the opposite sex sharing living quarters”:

Come live with me and be my love, And we will some new pleasures prove Of golden sands and crystal brooks With silken lines, and silver hooks. There’s nothing that I wouldn’t do If you would be my POSSLQ.

I suppose POSSLQ is somewhat passé, given our so-called culture’s burning need acknowledge, ratify, affirm, approve, endorse, and authenticate the notion that gender plays no essential role nowadays.

I suppose the advantages of UPIARR include its many possible definitions, depending on mood and circumstance, e.g., “ugly parasite in a rotting relationship,” “unbalanced pacifist instigating arbitrary role reversals,” etc. Additional variations might prove a worthwhile competition for one and all. Feel free!

What I use depends on the situation:

Partner (when I want to convey that we are in a committed relationship) Fiance (when I want to convey that our money is in a committed relationship) Baby daddy (when I know my audience will get the humor) Boyfriend (when I am unsure of my audience’s sense of humor)

in written language this problem is very simply dispensed with altogether. it does not take a clever writer to work out how to make it natural and simple for a reader, even exciting against our historically conservative background. this is not a genuine problem for genuine human relationships.

In the gay community most people routinely used “lover”at a certain point (70’s and 80’s iirc) but it seems to have been abandoned since and probably for the reason mentioned — too focused on sex for general use. And though I never came across POSSLQ, PSSSLQ would never have worked for us at all if only due to lack of vowels and resulting unpronounceability, and anyway I have at various times in my life shared living quarters with members of the same and opposite sexes with no hanky panky whatever, and had lovers with whom I did not live, as in long distance relationships. I think the current contender is “partner” (except in 12 countries and 11 states + counting where it is happily evolving into “husband” and “wife”).

How about “companion?” I was once writing up an event and described an older unmarried couple, and the terms boyfriend and girlfriend seemed inappropriate.

My 85 year old widowed grandfather refers to “ladyfriend”.

As a fellow AARP member, I’ve come up against this for a long time…together 4 years, married 9, divorced-but-still-together 5 years and remarried now. Same guy. Ha! find a word to cover all of that! I digress. We went through all kinds of permutations and found S.O. the easiest (maybe it’s California). But only the initials. Significant Other is too stuffy and as you said, “bureaucratese.” Partner is usually OK because the situation usually tells the other person the context. Girlfriend is passable, Boyfriend is NOT. Ladyfriend…bleahhh, takes me back to the disco years. Soulmate is good, but a bit too intimate for general use. Domestic Partner sounds a bit like a housekeeper. So yes, you’re right, there really isn’t a good, workable, across the board expression. Maybe that’s why we remarried – it solved the problem!

This is my “Other Half” or “Better Half” or my “Soul Mate”. Even though the terms lack any connotation of gender they still indicate a close, romantic relationship.

A difficult one, this. I still find boyfriend/girlfriend very odd when used of people over about 30. “Partner” needs to be given a context – do the people concerned live together or jointly own a business, or do they play tennis or bridge together? In Britain a couple may refer to each other jokingly as “my better half” or “my other half” and of course there are terms like “the missus” – there though isn’t as far as I know any corresponding term for a husband. I”ve never come across UPIARR before. As for POSSLQ the term used by the British census would be I think be “co-habitee”.

I share the same irritation of not having one really adequate word. I know that people of all ages, into their 90s even, refer to boyfriends/girlfriends, whether they are living together or not. “Partner,” at least where I live (SoFla), means same-sex relationship. I am twice divorced and then lived with a guy for about 7 years (in my 40s), and we did the boyfriend/girlfriend thing. Meh. Whatever. My neighbor has been with the same guy for almost 15 years, second time around for each. They’re not married but use husband/wife. I guess that different situations might call for different words. In legal issues, either you’re married (husband/wife) or not. In social situations, you can choose to disclose the actual relationship or not. When you go to pick up his dry-cleaning, you can say whatever you please but probably best to keep it simple. “I’m here to pick up 3 shirts for Joe Smith” (or Joe, if you go there often). When I’ve gone to a hospital to visit someone or given someone as a reference, I have sometimes said I’m a girlfriend or cousin, implying that there is a close relationship even if there is not, because of the increased credibility it provides and the doors it might open compared to just saying “I’m a friend of his.” Obviously whoever the other person is needs to be aware that you are doing this, and is willing to go along with it! And if you’re saying you’re his girlfriend, there had better not be another woman saying the same LOL

Why not just call the someone you are with your “friend”? Do people really need to know that you live together in a defacto relationship? Your close friends will know and others don’t need to know.

On another topic, I’d like to dump the word “gay” in relation to homosexual relationships and use “lesbian” and “mesbian”. L for ladies and M for men.

I think we are missing the important part of the discussion. Having a “significant Other”, Partner, Friend, and the list goes on. The significant other gives us the ownership of our most valuable resource. A connection with the human race that goes beyond the mundane world of needs and profession. To be “in a relationship” is what differs us from the loneless of individuality that we pretend to pray for and regale in our achievement of obtaining. The “significant other” makes us….. significant. I have had several ‘significant others’ in my life and feel blessed to be able to call the one with me at the time………….Significant.

I actually like the acronym as a word. Upiarr… sounds… romantic, French-ish, intimate, mysterious.

AARP is an acronym I’ve not come across before, and rather confusing for a Brit who still sees ARP used most commonly in its second world war context.

On the other hand I see nothing wrong with ‘partner’ for romantic partner and am used to any other type of partnership being specified in writing, if it’s not immediately obvious from the context.

As a UPIARR, I began a while ago to refer to the man in my life as my beloved. When I introduce him by saying,” I’d like you to meet my beloved Jim,” everyone, including Jim, seems pleased. So give the term a try. It definitely works for me!

I never liked ‘partner’ or ‘significant other’ but I felt I needed something to describe the man with whom I’ve been in love for the past ten or so years. Then, I remembered how my Grandmother always referred to my Grandfather as ‘my Companion’. I think it’s perfect. It leaves no doubt about the relationship without all the messy bits.

@Stevie AARP stands for American Association of Retired Persons. Don’t know what ARP is, but if it had something to do with a world war, then it is probably a very confusing acronym to compare to conversations about relationships.

How about co-vivant, or more properly covivant? I prefer it with the hyphen but I think it’s incorrect. Unexpectedly, at age 70, I got into one of the described relationships. That was nearly three years ago and while I don’t expect it to be permanent, I like covivant better than the other choices, mainly because of the reasons you’ve given. I have used partner but it sounds as if we were in business together.

Then there is paramate and lifemate. I hear spousal equivalent sometmes but I’ve never cared for it.

I know married couples, of opposite sex as well as differing, who use the word “partner” as it eliminates the possibility of preconceived gender roles that can come with “husband” and “wife.” Generally “partner” in a business sense will be qualified as “business partner,” or will be mentioned in a business setting.

Ted Wozniak: The problem with the German “Lebensgefährte” (life companion) is that like “life partner” it “imposes the implication of a lifelong relationship”, to reuse the impeccable wording from the article. Of course, we Germans have a sense of humour, so we came up with “Lebensabschnittsgefährte” (life episode partner), which imposes the opposite. I suspect that its mindless use has caused many a rift between unmarried couples.

I’ll be using “loving companion”, as I think it has a nice non-bureaucratic sound to it, it applies to same-sex couples, and it is unlikely to invoke unintended associations.

At the end of August, my wife and I will celebrate our marriage 11 years ago. But the anniversary that means the most to us is May 10th; the one just past marks the 34th anniversary of our first date. For all of that time — both before and after I convinced her to make an honest man of me — I’ve introduced her simply as “my lady” or “my lady Ola,” and I’ve been correspondingly designated, then and now, as “her man.” Those terms, accompanied by a loving look, continue to serve admirably, in expressing every nuance of our relationship, without any of the drawbacks attributed to the various terms discussed above.

As an over-30 guy … well, well over 30 … I find nothing wrong with boyfriend/girlfriend. What else would I call my girlfriend? She calls me her boyfriend. I know many folks over 50 who hav boyfriends and girlfriends.

There is always leman – a lover or sweetheart (from lief+man). It’s an older word that one finds in writings.

Bedfellow might be taken as a bit of sharing too much.

Perhaps the word you are all seeking is “imzadi.” Pronounced em-ZAH-dee. It describes a relationship as near to you as your beating heart. It is a word that was coined by the television show Star Trek—The Next Generation, and comes from a race of people called Betazed.

Depending on the situation: My companion (pretty clear you’d be referring to your significant other) My spouse (common-law spouses are recognized in Canada) My man/woman (reality simply said)

Since 1980, I have been using the term “My Co-vivant”. It’s gender neutral, it’s informative (two…or more, possibly–who knows, who cares?– people living together in a loving, long-term, shared-life situation). It’s a warm, caring and sexy-sounding word without being overly explicit, nor with too much information (that’s not anyone’s business anyway)… It’s also easy to say and, if necessary, explain.

I am chiming in several years late on this thread but here goes. I made up a few I think work well.

Most of these words work seem to work best in a verbal or informal context.

Sadly my beloved partner passed away last week and I am now trying to write her funeral announcement in the local newspaper which goes to press in two days’ time.

Compared to familiar descriptions of her relationships with her family members, like “mum” and “aunty”, the word “partner” sounds too distant in this written context, while others like “soulmate” sound too twee. Furthermore, I want to precede it with “beloved” so possible contenders like “loving companion” don’t work.

We had lived together for all but the first few months of the 23 years we had known each other, got engaged in the very early days but never married. The best I am able to come up with is “fiancée and partner”.

Any bright new ideas out there?

PS: Like Stevie Carroll above I am British. For those of you across the pond and unfamiliar with ARP, it is a very well known acronym for Air Raid Patrol. In the much loved 1960s/70s comedy series “Dad’s Army”, the ARP warden was one of the figures of ridicule.

I’m rarely offended unless someone intends to offend me, but there were two exceptions just a few years ago at the only hospital that will take the Obamacare plans (we were spoiled by good insurance for 13 years that let us choose before the obamacare cancellation notice came).

A nurse asked my wife if I was her partner, to which she answered, “Yes, since he finished his internship in 1999. We were also simultaneously executives in the same marketing department for 2 years.” After weird looks and a long silence the nurse starts hinting around like “do you live together…do you want him to hear what I say?” I’m like, “You’ve got to be kidding me, what in the heck kind of term is ‘partner’ now?” Apparently in this new liberally correct world every time we talk about our business history we have to use qualifiers so people don’t confuse us with fornicators, adulterers, or sodomites. And, every time someone asks us about our partnership, we have to clarify whether they’re being too nosy or want to talk business.

(The second time was when my wife had a pregnancy test and the ‘pregnancy coordinator’ asked if we wanted to “make it go away.” I found it extremely offensive but chose to tolerate the obvious hippie, questioning my wife as if our baby might be some kind of inconvenience for the rubbish bin. My wife, who immigrated from a country where human life is sacred, was too horrified to speak for an hour. Later she was screaming angry; and to this day…PTSD?)

The world really was a precisely better, less ambiguous place 20 years ago. Seriously peoples, the liberally correct obfuscators are far more offensive than just using the words that say what you mean. If other people want to add connotations to your words in order to misconstrue and self-offend, let them.

My partner told me about his fights with his ex. i think i’m on her side..

My partner and I each had several significant relationships before we met. We’re both in therapy and have learned a lot from that, so we’re very comfortable processing past relationships together. One of my partner’s past relationships soured quickly, which led to years of resentment and frustration before it ended. When he processes past arguments with his ex, he sometimes says she ‘‘picked a fight,’’ but when he tells the story, I quietly find that I’m often on her side. I find it odd that he, with all his otherwise tremendous self-awareness, cannot move past what to me feels like a somewhat skewed take on someone else’s valid frustrations.

I love him, and I always want to be on his team. But I feel oddly guilty, as a woman, for not speaking up in defense of his ex in those moments; she sounds generally immature, but that doesn’t mean she was always wrong. It also makes me wonder if he will someday regard my own real and valid frustrations as ‘‘picking fights.’’ Is it my place to (lovingly, supportively) challenge his understanding of arguments I wasn’t there to witness? Or is it best to bite my tongue and simply listen, knowing that all perspectives are inherently skewed and limited? — Name Withheld

On this topic, your partner strikes you as the classic ‘‘unreliable narrator’’ who effectively testifies against himself, providing the listener with evidence that his understanding of things is wrong. What’s more, you worry that you’re seeing the future in this contested past. Your partner seems blinkered in his view of this ex, and you wonder whether the same blinkered gaze will come to rest on you. So first let’s ask why you haven’t already shared your perspective.

I’m guessing that you’ve held back because you fear that your partner will feel unsupported and even betrayed if you take his ex’s side. For one thing, it’s hard to tell whether someone was ‘‘picking a fight’’ if you weren’t there to assess the emotional atmosphere and the tone in which remarks were made. He may think that loving partners will give each other the benefit of the doubt in situations like these — a fair point.

For all that, you’re entitled to your interpretation of those recounted interactions. I’m inclined to agree with those philosophers who argue that we have some scope about what we believe (and that relationships may affect what we should believe), but not when the evidence is sufficiently compelling. You think what you think. You also raise the issue of solidarity with other women, which might lead you to give her the benefit of the doubt instead. I don’t know how large a role this plays in your thinking. (One counterfactual to entertain: Suppose your partner were bisexual and the ex were another man, would you have responded differently?)

If this were simply a matter of the past, you could ask yourself how important it is to contest his interpretation — how important it is to get it right. But again, this is clearly also about the present and the future. That he’s assuming you’ll see things as he does suggests that he doesn’t understand you as well as you might hope. Are there other signs that you’re not entirely in accord about how people who are coupled should treat each other? Conversations about former relationships are part of your current relationship. The fact that this issue is weighing on your mind argues for finding a way to take it up — lovingly and supportively, as you say. Maybe gently contesting his interpretations of the past could lead to a larger conversation about how to move beyond it.
