Moving story of a horse and boy has anti-war message.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that War Horse uses simple language, meant to display the limited awareness of its animal narrator, to tell a poignant story with a strong anti-war message. Like Joey the horse, many of the casualties in this World War I novel understand little about why the battles are fought and lives…

Violence & Scariness

This book's simple vocabulary makes it accessible to kids from age 10, but there is a good deal of violence and death in War Horse . It would be unrealistic if a novel whose action happens largely in the thick of battle didn't include injuries and death, but horse lovers should be forewarned. Horses are occasionally mistreated by their humans before war breaks out; during battle, horses are maimed and killed. Living conditions are brutal for the horses, and some die when their systems weaken due to exposure and poor nourishment. In one scene, some horses are auctioned off to a butcher. Humans also are wounded and killed, though human injuries are described with less detail than the horses'. In addition, in Albert's world on the farm in Devon, his father becomes aggressive and verbally abusive when he drinks.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Albert's father, troubled by his inability to keep his farm financially sound, drinks to excess weekly. He is normally a loving husband and father, but when he drinks he abuses his loved ones verbally, and mistreats Joey the horse.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Drinking, Drugs & Smoking in your kid's entertainment guide.

Positive Messages

War Horse is simply anti-war and pro-horse. Events are told by a sensitive animal, albeit one with limited understanding of human machinations; this seems to highlight the senselessness of the destruction. Joey the horse doesn't understand why men are killing each other, and neither does the reader. The bond between horse and master is sweet and profound, and a love of animals shows the commonality between people on both sides of the conflict.

Positive Role Models

Humans in this novel are very much divided between those who show kindness and respect to horses and those who use and mistreat them. Captain Nicholls, who first takes Joey into battle, is an intelligent horseman who uses finesse rather than force with Joey. Young Emilie and her grandfather give Joey and his friend Topthorn a safe haven and nourishment. Joey's true master, Albert, devotes himself to protecting the horse he raised.

Educational Value

This novel offers a horse's eye view of World War I. Readers will learn some of the jobs horses performed for the military (pulling heavy artillery, pulling ambulance carts, taking riders into battle). The novel also teaches some basic War facts: battles were fought in France; English and American soldiers fought against Germans. Proper care and treatment of horses are also explained to some extent.

Parents need to know that War Horse uses simple language, meant to display the limited awareness of its animal narrator, to tell a poignant story with a strong anti-war message. Like Joey the horse, many of the casualties in this World War I novel understand little about why the battles are fought and lives are lost. To Joey, the fighting is cacophonous, chaotic, and random -- an eloquent statement about the pointlessness of the violence. Horse lovers will sometimes be upset by War Horse , but they will also be moved by the kindness shown to Joey and the horse's deep bond with his young master, Albert. The film version of this novel, also titled War Horse and directed by Steven Spielberg, will open Christmas Day 2011.

Awesome! I Recommend it!!! :3

What's the story.

Joey, a red-bay colt, is sold to an English farmer, whose son, Albert, raises the horse and teaches him to work their family farm. After World War I breaks out, Albert's father sells Joey to the army in order to pay the mortgage on his farm. Joey is forced to carry riders into battle, and pull artillery and carts full of wounded soldiers. As Joey struggles to survive, Albert never stops hoping they will be reunited.

Is It Any Good?

War Horse holds special appeal for horse lovers, who will care deeply about Joey's plight as he is pushed and pulled between the humans fighting World War I. The novel offers a unique perspective on the hardships endured by war horses, and the emotional and physical needs of horses in general. Because the novel is offered from a horse's point of view, however, human relationships within the book are less satisfying.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about what it means to write a wartime book from the perspective of a horse. What does Joey tell us about war? Does Joey understand why he is taught to perform the tasks he does? Does anyone in the war?

Steven Spielberg decided to make War Horse into a movie. Can you see why? Why do you think war movies are popular with audiences?

Joey and Albert have a close relationship. Why does Joey mean so much to Albert?

In the Trenches: ‘War Horse’

  • Share full article

By Regina Marler

  • Sept. 8, 2010

For centuries, the most glorified fighting — often reserved for officers and noblemen — was mounted combat.

book review war horse

Michael Morpurgo’s superb 1982 young adult novel War Horse (Scholastic, paper, $6.99) follows Joey, a half-Thoroughbred farm horse, as he is separated from his 15-year-old owner, Albert, and taken to France in 1914 with a British cavalry unit. Albert, who is too young to enlist, vows to follow Joey into battle. Reprinted to coincide with a hit stage adaptation in London, “War Horse” is now being made into a film by Steven Spielberg and will be staged at Lincoln Center in the spring.

Although a first-person animal narrator asks a lot of the reader, Joey’s voice — unsentimental and brave under fire — amplifies the emotional impact of the story. He tells of an early skirmish: “The first terrible shells fell among us and the machine guns opened up. The bedlam of battle had begun. All around me, men cried and fell to the ground, and horses reared and screamed in an agony of fear and pain.” Flashing swords are nothing against machine guns, and graceful Joey turns out to be of more use as a cart horse than an officer’s mount. The historical details in this short book powerfully ground it in its moment, but a timeless question drives the story: Will the two friends, Joey and Albert, ever see each other again?

Regina Marler is the author of a literary history, “Bloomsbury Pie.” She is writing a novel.

War Horse by Michael Morpurgo

An exceptionally poignant story of one horse's experience in the First World War.

In 1914, Joey, a young farm horse, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges towards the enemy, witnessing the horror of the frontline. But even in the desolation of the trenches, Joey's courage touches the soldiers around him.

Michael Morpurgo is a national treasure, a former Children's Laureate and the author of many book's that are beloved by children, parents and teachers alike. Kensuke's Kingdom , The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips and King of the Cloud Forests are amongst his most read and enjoyed stories but it is for War Horse for which he is currently best known.

In World War I over ten million humans, mainly young men, died. The war also claimed the lives of over six million horses. And it this horrifying period of world history that forms the backdrop for War Horse , a tragic tale that is told from the viewpoint of the horse, Joey. It is a tale that cleverly portrays the ridiculousness of war by showing the horse's complete incomprehension of what was unfolding in the trenches and on the battlefield; the horse is simply unable to comprehend how - or why - anybody or anything would behave in such a violent, unthinking way and be able to commit such horrific acts. War Horse highlights human cruelty and human disdain for both animals and each other whilst also highlighting just how powerful love and courage can be.  It is extremely well written, features exemplary character development and is a book that will allow younger readers to understand the horrors their great grandparents were forced faced in order to battle tyranny and retain freedom.

The final say on War Horse should always go, whenever possible to those it has been written for. A glance at the reader reviews below will show you the impact it has had upon them, and how emotional the reading expereince was for them.

" Incredible. Beautiful. Emotionally amazing. I could not live without this book! " Ella from Hampshire.

" This was the best book I have ever read. Words can't describe how good it was. Just read it. " Jordan from America.

" I thought War Horse was brilliant! It is the most touching book I have ever read, and I would recommend it to anyone, even if they aren't animal lovers! " concurs Megan from Stafford. " This is one of the best books I have ever read and I would recommend it to everyone as it not only touches the hearts of any animal lover, but it also shows you the dreadful conditions of the First World War and the hardships they must have faced. " Grace from England.

" This book was recommended to me by a friend and to put it into a few words... I loved it. I laughed and cried, I love reading. " Jessica from Tamworth.

If you are thinking of reading War Horse then have must read through the many reader comments below as they are as insightful and as honest as you could possibly wish for.

If you have read and enjoyed War Horse then Fantasy Book Review would also recommended Watership Down by Richard Adams and The Duncton Chronicles by William Horwood.

Michael Morpurgo has won the Whitbread Award, the Smarties Award, the Circle of Gold Award, the Children's Book Award and has been short-listed for the Carnegie Medal four times. His novels have been adapted for film (My Friend Walter, Why the Whales Came, War Horse) and stage (including, Kensuke's Kingdom for the Polka Theatre and Why the Whales Came for Alibi). Michael received an OBE in December 2006 for his services to literature.

alice from UK

I LOVED the book it was one of my fav book by Michael. At school I've read it with my class. He did a very good job of it, though I gives it a nine because it can be a bit boring for some people and my friends find it a bit boring, but I think it was amazing. It is for 10 or 10+ years old. If I was your friend I would definitely recommend this book.

Abbie from England

This book is so amazing it touches my heart every time I read it. I would personally really recommend this book to every animal lover out there and to people who like war books. I myself don't like reading but as soon as I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. It is brilliant for all ages and yeah very recommended!!!!! xxxx

Brianna from Australia

Anon from UK

Allen from Germany

It‘s a great book! Loved it!
It's amazing. I recommend to everyone.
It was really good. I can't believe people dislike this story, it is brilliant, all Michael's books are amazing - definitely Kensuke's Kingdom. I recommend your reading this book of his.

Hugh from England

Laurence from Wales

Ané from South Africa

I loved the book, and can say that it is definitely a page-turner, especially it being set in the mind of a horse, something different and unique... But the ending (being set in World War 1) seemed vey unrealistic, and extra ordinary, had the ending been more intense, even though I would hate Joey not finding his owner, I would have liked it, overall, way more.

Beth from US

It was okay. I feel like it got extremely repetitive at times. It became predictable very after the same formula occurred the first two times.

Chehek from Australia

Best book ever and for people who hate it ,well they are just weird

Kayla from England

I love this book I am going to write a book review about it.

Simone from South Africa

War Horse was a most beautiful story. Usually war stories absolutely reek with gore, but this was mild, but touching enough to make you feel Joey's feelings and experiences.

Samantha Jones from London

I am 14 years old and I live in London. I have had horses since I was four and have always loved riding. My mum introduced me to War Horse three years ago and I have read it four times! I just can't get enough of it and I cry every time I read it. I really sympathised with Albert, I think he is a very strong character and I really respected the way he looked after his horses. I didn't sympathise with Alberts dad, this is because I thought he was a careless man who only thinks about himself. This all changes in the end of the book. I think Michael Morpurgo is an amazing author and he inspires me into writig with all his amazing stories. This book has changed the way I thought about the war and it would be great if any more young readers would like to read it. Thanks.

Link from USA

Sunami Singh from England

I am 11 and go to Handsworth Grammar School. I liked reading War Horse, it was very good.

Timothy Hay from Birmingham

This book is very intriguing and it makes you want to read on. It feels like you're also in the book along with Joey. I liked the way the story was told through the horse's perspective and not just what the men thought about the war.

Steph from England

War Horse is a brilliant book or film but it a little bit vigilant but good :) :(

Sacha from England

Sarah from England

It was the best book ever. When joey's rider was killed he ran straight home to his owner who couldn't believe that he had come back such a heart-warming story. Although it was upsetting as well it was a really good book and a really good film.

Cassie from London

It's so touching after you have read the book. Michael Morpurgo described so much in the story but to improve, it needs to be quite longer but other than that; brilliant! My homework in class was to read this book and review and I am glad a read this! When i stopped reading War Horse, my emotions changed quite a bit but to be honest, it was quite boring but it's quite good ;)

Asad from England

This is what you call the bbbbbeeeeeessssssstttttttt! Book in the WORLD!

Bob from England

I like this book because it shows you about friendship.

Mark from France

Fathimah from England

This book was awesome. I can't believe some people dislike this amazing book.

Sadie from UK

It is an amazing book, it kind of makes you think about all the emotional times that actually happened. It was recommended by a friend and they loved it too. It blows you away and you can't stop reading it. Now I recommend the film which is the same story but with more action!!!!

Benjy04 from England

Amazing, the best book I have ever read.

Ellis from England

This was a very sad book and it almost made me cry, however it was kinda boring.

Oscar from England

It was a sad but an absolutely amazing book.

Tom from England

This is awesome, it engages me a lot.

Zohrez from Norway

Wow I really loved this book I did not want it to end and when I read it to my mom she started to cry a bit but we reallyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy loved it we did not like it when Topthorn and captin Nicholas dies but I think it was awesome if you have any more books like this let it know.

Pip from Australia

This book was so touching I didn't want to stop reading it but I didn't want to finish the bBook. It is the best book I've read and it shows you how tough times were in WWI for both men and animals and the connections the military had with the horses. Over 6 million horses died in WWI and yet who knows how many men died. It scares me to think that the way people treated horses like Ttopthorn and he was one of the strongest horses there along with Joey. There were good masters and bad masters that just didn't care about anyone and they were as cruel as you can get. It's a bit of a good history lesson. READ THIS FOR SURE.... can't wait to read his other books. GOOD JOB MICHAEL... 100%!

Silvia from Straford-Upon-Avon

At school we read War Horse and we thought it was really, really good.

Ben from London

It was amazing and I got to read it for class it was really good.

Sam from Australia

A book that makes you think and you won't put it down until you have finished.

Megan from Hampshire

Read this book thousands of times! I cried, laughed and genuinely felt for the characters. We are reading this in English at the moment and it is absolutely brilliant!

Katie from Norfolk

It was amazing, I cried loads because it was so sad but then I laughed when it was funny. Michael Morpurgo did a good job of putting emotional language in there, he also made it incredibly realistic at points I could see the image he was talking about and I felt that I was there. I'm learning about War Horse in my English class at the moment and its making me sad because I know what's going to happen next! Honestly though if you haven't read it YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!!!

I LOVED this book. I thought it was one of his best books so far, it was very heartbreaking at some places but then it just got better and when it did get better it was amazing. I'm only 15 and enjoyed this book. I love animals and especially horses and also I am one of those people that don't read a lot and I read this book within a week because this book was incredible. I would very much so recommend this book, it was by far the best book that I have read by Micheal Morpurgo and the best book that I have read overall by the books that I have read :) !!!!!!! PLEASE READ THIS BOOK !!!!!!!!!!!!! Also if I could rate this book out of 10 I would give it 11 :p

Michael from Uk

I loved it.

Louis from England

Really good book for all ages but I think a bit of fighting so some people will be down hearted but it is amazing book and I have read it 10 times and have seen the move 6 times, so there you have it .

Emily from Calabasas, California

I am 13 years old and I love this book. I have an English tutor and she told me to read this book and I enjoyed it. I am also doing this in English and drama for GCSE and it is such a great book to read. It's like one of the best book I have ever read! :-) I have read it like 10 times.

Carlos from Michigan

Connor from Bristol

An extremely amazing and touching book, recomended to me by my school.

Bobby JR from Where bobby lives... duh

Great book, very moving. Read it 2 times and would happily read it a third. :D

Becky from West Midlands

I found this book boring to start with, but once I got into the book, it was very good. Very moving and I felt a lot of sympathy for Joey and Albert :-( I would recommend this book to 12+ :-)

Harry from Dublin

It is a very good book. I would recommend this book for people 10+. I do not like Ted Naracott. I was sad when Topthorn and Friedrich died but it has a happy ending, when Albert gets Joey back. Iit is an overall very good book.

Jodi from Dublin, Ireland

I love this book. I read it with my class and we read it every Friday. We actually all love it, full of adventure and very serious with lots of action. I recommend it to everyone from 7+.

Conor from Dublin

I loved this book it had a lot of action and emotion. I didn't like the first three chapters because I didn't think there was much going on. But the rest of the chapters were brilliant! My favourite character was Joey because he had a lot of courage and he didn't want to leave Topthorn behind. However I didn't like Albert's Dad because he was selfish. This book shows what it was like for horses and men in the war. I would recommend this to anyone over the age of seven.

Celine from Dublin

Ok. Wow. Brilliant book. I absolutely loved it. Anyone could read it (and I mean anyone) and couldn't resist falling in love with it. I go horse riding and know already horses are good creatures when treated nicely but this just shows any other people who don't believe it. It shows that through anything the bond between Joey and Albert is strong enough to go through war. Read it and you'll understand.

Fatin from Paris, France

This is a one great book! I French but I am in love with his wonderful books that he wrote! I think this is the best book that Michael Morpurgo wrote!

Sophie from United Kingdom

Ashley from Branford

War horse was a great book, movie was also awesome!!!

Sam from Canada

Emma from Wales

The most amazing and inspiring book that I have ever read.

Adila from London

I think the book is excellent, it has all the action. I recommened the book to everyone.

Ella from Hampshire (YAY!)

Incredible. Beautiful. Emotionally amazing. I could not live without this book!

Gabriella from Glasgow

I thought the book was very interesting. It is quite different from all the other books that I have read. I would say it is suitable for 10+. Michael Morpurgo is a very inspiring author.

Hanief from England

This book is amazing, it really makes you think.

Sagar from Swieqi, Malta

I read it and I loved the movie as well. After finishing it last year I knew that it would once turn into a movie. It is a fantastic book and it tells about the sufferings in World War 1 a lot. The book is a bit short, and is almost like the movie. I felt sad for the horse, for Joey, for Captain Nicholls, and for every character except of selfish people like Albert's father, who thinks only of himself and sells Joey without even asking Albert once. I am especially sad when Joey reaches No Man's Land. The ending is very good because Joey and Albert reunite. The film does a good job and is worth watching, and especially Michael Morpurgo's fans will love it.

elissa from birmingham

I am 11 years old, and I got the book War Horse for Christmas and I have just finished. I loved it, it made me feel as if I was Joey the horse but I don't like Albert's dad, because he has no sympathy for Joey and then sells him. Before I read this book I didn't think about the war but now I know how important it is. Great book!!! P.S. please write back Michael.

Jordan from America

This was the best book I have ever read. Words can't describe how good it was. Just read it.

Megan from Stafford

I thought War Horse was brilliant! It is the most touching book I have ever read, and I would recommend it to anyone, even if they aren't animal lovers! I enjoyed the book that much that I am now reading it again, and I never read books! I can't wait to go and see it at the cinema and also at the theatre in April! So if your looking for a book you don't want to put down, choose War Horse!

Bill from MI

This book was soo awesome. I continually read it all the time!!!!

Yo Mama from Unicorn Town

It was a great book the only problem was the amount of people that died in it.

Uzair from Stockton

I thought the book was great. I was writing a review on it, and used this to help me. But this is just awesome. I would recommend it for ages 9+.

Grace from England

This is one of the best books I have ever read and I would recommend it to everyone as it not only touches the hearts of any animal lover, but it also shows you the dreadful conditions of the First World War and the hardships they must have faced.

Jessica from Tamworth

This book was recommended to me by a friend and to put it into a few words... I loved it. I laughed and cried, I love reading and I am glad that Michael Morpurgo has written this book. I am now reading the follow on to this book, called Farm Boy. This book has the most spectacular points of a horses view and it also shows that there is nothing to be scared about horses. I ride myself and love it so I can see where Albert is coming from when he is heart broken when his father sells Joey to the army. I was touched by this. I have my own horse and would hate anybody who did that to any horse whether they needed the money or not. 40 is not enough money for a companion and I would have thought about what I was doing before i did it. I am glad that Albert got Joey back and looked after him on the farm just like he one had before. I was upset when Topthorn died in the middle of the book because Joey was without a friend and an owner when his new owner was killed the same day as Topthorn. Over all I am really grateful that my friend showed me this book in the School Library. Thanks Emma, I love you for it. xxx READ THIS BOOK PEOPLE YOU NEED TO!!!

jasmine from Manchester

i am 13 and i had to read this book for my book report for school, i found the book a beautifully moving story of love and friendship through animals!!!!!! it gave me lots of information about world war!!!! i have recommended this book to all my friends and family and now i recomend this to you!!!!!

Sophia from Cheshire

I absolutley loved this book! I think it is extremely moving! I also loved the sequel to this book, farm boy. Michael Morpurgo is an excellent author and I have read many of his books and not disliked one so far.

Sarah from Cooper

I think the book was very well organised.

Kent from UK

I loved every bit of it.

Julian from Philadelphia

I feel that the book's overall writing as quite mediocre. While I read, I felt that Michael Morpurgo had a thesaurus.com tab open on his computer. But don't get me wrong. I had much trouble putting the book down the second I picked it up. Even though the story was written that well the story itself was excellent which is the reason why there is a play, and soon to be a movie, of the same name. The story is so rich that it would be a crime not to share it in any artistic style. It was very easy to relate to the story because everyone has a love for their pet and would be distraught if it was ever taking away from them. In my mind Morpurgo is a story teller, not a writer, and there is nothing wrong with that. Over all this is a great read and I have recommended it countless times. I can't wait to see what Spielberg is going to go with it. SPOILER ALERT! I did not like the ending whatsoever. It wasn't that Joey didn't die, or that Emilie did, but that it ended on an unusual and unneeded note. Who cares about Albert's wife and her pastries? It was a stupid way of ending the amazing story. I hope the movie doesn't end the same way.

Pablo from Cody, Wy

It is an awesome book! I love it.

Jess from The Moon

A deeply moving book as I love horses and this book explains all about the compassion, partnership and love between the horse and his master. I recommend this because it's a very atmospheric book. Topthorn was a good friend to Joey :D

Daniel Dunn from Manchester UK

I absolutely loved this book, the bond between man and horse is amazing. I've worked with horses most of my life. I'm 10 and I started at 4 so this book is amazing.

Dmitri from Slovina

It's good with lots of adventure!

Alice from West Yorkshire

I am 14 years old and have worked with horses for 4 years now. I was introduced to War Horse by a friend, who enjoyed the book alot. I bought myself a copy and I simply can't get enough of this book. The bond between man and horse is displayed very well throughout the book. I liked the way that Micheal Morpurgo shows how the war can effect some characters, such as Albert's father, who comes accross as a selfish men who doesn't care about anyone but himself. But when he takes Joey from the stable, he is suddenly softer with him, and he explains that he is selling him for Albert, making him come accross as a completely new character. I have read this book 9 times now, and cried every time. I think this book is an amazingly moving piece, and it is a real adult fantasy. LOVE IT!

Jonah from Ljubljana

In War horse the characters are Joey, Albert, Emily, Emile's grand papa and Topthorn. Topthorn is grand horse that works for the army and is War horse is a book by Michael Morpurgo that is based upon a young horse named Joey who trains to be a war horse during the first world war. This novel is based upon true friendship between Joey and a young boy named Albert. I n this book the characters are Joey, Albert, Topthorn, Emily and Emily's grand papa. Topthorn is a grand horse that Joey stick's close to throughout the story. Emily and her Grand papa take care of Joey and Topthorn through one of the toughest of times in the war. The themes of war horse are war, sadness and death. There is evidence of war when they were carried off France to fight and in the book many people died such as Emily and Topthorn that results in sadness. I would recommend this book to children 8+ because the context can be hard to understand and to read, but, overall I think War Horse is a great book to read if your into books that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I raised an eyebrow at first at War Horse being a fantasy novel - but given that Joey is more sentient than we believe horses in reality to be, I suppose it is. The source of my confusion is that while I like the book, I love (which is to say worship) the play - hopefully will be seeing it for the third time later this year. And in the play, there being no narrator, Joey and the other horses in respect of their sentience are appear just like any other horse. Of course, if we want to imagine a supernatural element to them, we may. And then the play itself becomes a fantasy story too. I look forward to (and fear) what the film will do with the story.

Phoebe Drysdale from Scotland

I am 12 years old and I live in Scotland. Thanks.

Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse is a simple yet effective book. Primarily a children’s author, Morpurgo enthuses very adult issues into the small book, bringing the reality of the first world war to a larger audience.

Told through the eyes of the book’s protagonist, Joey the horse, the story manages to provide a neutral statement on the attrocities of war. Joey, a tall red thoroughbred who takes the breath away from anyone who looks at him, is taken from his stable in Devon and thrown into a war zone. Here he meets friends and enemies, but the distinction between the two is not based on German vs English. He relates with those who are nice and fears those who threaten him.

It is Joey’s friendships that help make the book work as well as it does. Equestrian friend Topthorn offers hope when despair surrounds them whilst friendly officers and youthful German Emillie only have Joey’s best interests at heart. It is Joey’s relationship with original owner Albert that is most touching, the two only being separated by the onslaught of war.

The brave and hopeful language used throughout the book is inspiring, as is Joey’s commitment to his friends. There are some truly worrying moments toward the end of the book whilst the vivid moments of battle bring the reality of war back to the reader. Joey’s will and determination, perhaps best signified in his unifying trip into no man’s land, is inspiring and forms the crux of the book.

Not just a children’s book, War Horse is a delightful, if rather harrowing, read, telling the story of friendship overcoming the horrors of war.

War Horse by Michael Morpurgo: Book Review

book review war horse

This generation has War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, a tale of a young boy, a horse, and the war that pulled them apart. Loved since its publication in Great Britain in 1982, the book inspired electrifying stage productions on both sides of the Atlantic, and has been transformed into a movie by director Steven Spielberg.

Like Black Beauty, War Horse is narrated by its main horse character from a first-person viewpoint. In this case, it’s Joey, raised as a distinctively-marked, reddish colt in the Devon countryside of England by young Albert, who vows to get back what he considers his when father sells the horse to a British officer, who trains the part-thoroughbred bay for military duty in World War I. Albert is too young to serve, but he waits for the day he can go to war and find his faithful equine friend.

Joey tells of his experiences on both sides of the front lines, charging the enemy, pulling loads, carrying the wounded, cared for by a French family in German-held territory, and wandering No-Man’s-Land. Since it is war, there are descriptions of violence, but not much more graphic than you’ll see on the evening news.

There are friendships: the boy-master he loves, the proud horse Topthorn who models the behavior of a war horse for Joey, and the sweet Emilie who cares for the horses when the military doesn’t. There is also military non-intelligence, sending horses into a battlefield of barbed wire and machine guns, hitching cavalry horses to pull artillery through mud and snow, and sacrificing men for a strip of land that might be lost the next day.

Of course, the book is noted for its “anti-war bias.” Nobody thinks war is a nice thing, although some people seem to think it is the way to get what they want: land, power, the elimination of some group that is not like theirs in some way.

War Horse points out the ways people are alike: soldiers on both sides of the war care about the horses, they all recognize nobility and bravery, and love and friendship is found everywhere. If that is part of being anti-war, then we could use a little more of it in the books we give our children to read.

Watch for a review of the movie War Horse here soon!

Terrance V. Mc Arthur is a California-born, Valley-raised librarian/entertainer/writer. He is currently writing a stage adaptation of Jack London’s The Call of the Wild for the Fresno County Public Library’s next The Big Read. He lives in Sanger, four blocks from the library, with his wife, his daughter, and a spinster cat.

It sounds like a splendid story, but having wept my way through Black Beauty, I can’t bear to watch the film. 🙁

At least it all ends happily enough, I couldn’t bear to read/watch it if he dies. 🙁

I thought that the book war horse was a great book it. It told a story of a very brave boy and horse who went into battle together for their country, and then separated during the war. They then where hell bent on finding each other throughout the rest of the war, and they both never gave up. I thought this was a great book, and i will probably remember it for the rest of my life. This book just shows so much drive and motivation. Just what Albert and Joey had to do to reunite at the end it was a wonderful ending. At the beginning of the book i thought that it was just gonna be a boring book, but it turned out to be a great read.

Kid’s Book Review: War Horse

By Sarah Tyson

Kid’s Book Review: War Horse

About the Book and Author

War Horse is a book that everyone is familiar with. However, you may not be aware that Michael Morpurgo’s story about a friendship between a boy and his horse Joey, set in the First World War, has now been adapted into a picture book.

Illustrated throughout by Tom Clohosy Cole, this enables this popular and important story to be enjoyed by a younger readers. The full colour pictures are glossy, clean-lined and vivid – almost in the style of graphic novel artwork, except that they are glorious full colour spreads, as you would expect in a picture book for younger children.

We would recommend this moving book to children aged 6-9 years. It tells of an enduring friendship between a boy and his horse, which is touching and will appeal to animal lovers, but this book also helps children to understand the history and deadly chaos of the First World War in an appropriate way. As we move beyond centenary commemorations and continue to strive for peace across the world, War Horse  is a classic that will be read by generations to come.

Book Review

I think that this book is amazing.

I couldn’t wait to read this book when it arrived because it looked so special.

I think that this book is amazing and at one point I got tears in my eyes. The pictures are amazing, so detailed. My favourite was the one where Albert was in the trenches.

I think Joey, the horse was really brave and so was Albert. Joey and Albert had a really good friendship and it was heart-warming to read about.

The war was really bad. I don’t know who the German was in the story, but I think he wanted the war to be over too because of what he said. I didn’t know they used horses in the war I thought they used cows so this was something that I learned about the war.

After I read the book I talked with my Granny about it. She and my Grandad went to see War Horse at the Theatre a long time ago and she said it was brilliant. I liked sharing this book with her so she could see the amazing pictures and we could talk about the story together.

I am so lucky I can keep this book I will read it lots and then put it in the box of really special books my Mum says we are saving for my children to read one day!

Year Published

This historical fiction/animal story by Michael Morpurgo is published by Scholastic, Inc., and written for kids ages 8 to 12. The age range reflects readability and not necessarily content appropriateness.

Although this book is not part of a series, the author wrote a prequel to War Horse (published in 1982) called Farm Boy (published 1997).

Plot Summary

In 1914, a colt named Joey (who narrates this tale) is sold to a drunken farmer. The farmer’s 15-year-old son, Albert, is thrilled. He names and cares for Joey and protects the animal from the farmer’s drunken rages. When the family begins to feel the financial impact of war, Albert’s father secretly sells Joey to an army officer named Captain Nicholls. Albert finds out and begs the captain to let him join the army. Albert is too young, but Nicholls promises to take good care of Joey for him.

True to his word, Nicholls treats Joey well and sketches him for Albert. He is proud of his new horse. Though Joey still fondly remembers Albert, he grows to like his new life and master. He develops a friendship with another horse, Topthorn, who belongs to Nicholls’ friend, Captain Stewart. The horses and men are shipped overseas for battle. Departing the ship in France, the soldiers witness the sorrow and injuries all around them. They soon face their own battle, and Captain Nicholls is killed.

A young trooper named Warren becomes Joey’s new owner. Joey and Topthorn do well in battle, but the Germans capture Warren and Stewart and their mounts. Though the horses no longer have the honor of serving the cavalry, their duties of pulling carts full of wounded German soldiers earn them praise and good care from the men. An old farmer and his granddaughter, Emilie, dote on the horses as well. When the German army moves out of the area, Emilie and her grandfather get to keep the two horses. Joey and Topthorn are content to work the farm until another band of soldiers takes them. They become workhorses under worse conditions than they’ve ever experienced. They grow thin and weak but are nursed back to health in the spring by a man named Friedrich. Joey is devastated when Topthorn dies of exhaustion and Friedrich dies in battle later that day.

Alone and frightened, Joey gets injured on a barbed fence and wanders into “no-man’s-land” between the German and English camps. One man from each side comes out to help him. During the two soldiers’ brief discussion, they realize they are very much alike and that the war might be needless if two people like them could just sit down and talk it out. The English soldier wins the coin toss for Joey and takes him back to camp.

Joey is reunited with Albert, who is now an army veterinary orderly. Their joy is short-lived when Joey begins showing signs of tetanus from his wound. Albert begs for and receives permission to nurse the horse back to health. Slowly, Joey regains his mobility. As the war ends, Albert’s officer announces the horses will not be returning with the soldiers but will be sold in France. All of Albert’s fellow soldiers pool their money, but they’re not able to outbid an old German man who buys Joey. The man, Emilie’s grandfather, tells Albert how Emilie lost the will to live after the horses were taken. His deathbed promise to her was to make sure Joey was cared for. He sells Joey to Albert for one penny, as long as Albert promises to share Emilie’s story so her life will not be in vain. Joey and Albert return home.

Christian Beliefs

Trooper Warren prays aloud in battle, but his prayers soon become curses as he witnesses the carnage of battle. Emilie’s grandpa tells Joey and Topthorn that Emilie prays for them every night. A soldier says there is divinity in horses, and God got it right when he created them. When German and English soldiers both want Joey, one suggests that King Solomon had an answer but it wasn’t very practical in this case. Albert says he asked God to help him save the horse because, when it’s all said and done, it’s up to Him.

Other Belief Systems

When Emilie becomes gravely ill, her grandfather tells Joey and Topthorn that, if they can understand him, they should pray to whatever horse god they pray to. When the girl recovers, he thanks the horses because he’s sure they prayed. An English soldier says rugby is his religion. A German soldier says God only knows why the opposing forces are trying to kill each other, and it seems even He has forgotten why. A sergeant tells the veterinary corps that a horse’s life may even be more important than a man’s because a horse doesn’t have any evil in him except what man has put there. Albert recalls a Sunday school teacher telling him, “God helps those who help themselves.” He was impressed by her knowledge of Scripture.

Authority Roles

Albert’s father is often drunk. He beats his animals, sometimes threatening more severe harm. He apologetically changes his behavior and stops drinking after selling Joey. Albert’s mother makes excuses for his father, saying he drinks because he’s afraid of losing their farm. Most people Joey encounters on either side of the war, including Captain Nicholls, Warren, Emilie and others, admire and take good care of him.

Profanity & Violence

There are several uses of h— and the Lord’s name is taken in vain. There are several minor exclamations of what the devil . The story takes place in wartime and mentions a number of battles and injuries. None of the scenes are particularly graphic.

WAR HORSE PICTURE BOOK

A beloved modern classic adapted for a new generation of readers.

by Michael Morpurgo ; illustrated by Tom Clohosy Cole ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 7, 2022

An engrossing look at a war that sacrificed both horses and people.

Morpurgo adapts his 1982 novel for a younger audience.

Albert and Joey, his red bay, are bonded “like brothers.” Joey responds to Albert’s calls, and together, they work on the family farm in Devon, plowing, sowing, and harvesting. When war breaks out in Europe, Albert’s father, in need of money for the farm, sells Joey to the military. Albert, devastated, vows to one day reunite with Joey. He angrily leaves home and enlists in the army, lying about his age. Ensuing spreads depict Albert training for and entering World War I’s trench warfare. Joey’s fortunes are equally miserable as a cavalry horse. The narrative, heavily anthropomorphizing Joey throughout, tracks him as he and stablemate Topthorn are captured by the Germans. They pull an ambulance cart, spend a calmer summer on a farm, then endure grueling work pulling guns before garnering gentler treatment from German soldier Friedrich. Morpurgo’s sentimental treatment, matched by Disney-esque tableaux intermittently delivered in comics-style panels, nonetheless conveys war as barbaric and treacherous for all—human or animal. After a battle in which both Friedrich and Topthorn are killed, Joey races away, turning up on the wastes of the no man’s land between the warring armies. Albert and an English-speaking German soldier toss a coin for Joey, and Albert, the apparent winner, returns home with Joey at war’s end. (This book was reviewed digitally.)

THE LOST STONE

THE LOST STONE

From the the kingdom of wrenly series , vol. 1.

by Jordan Quinn ; illustrated by Robert McPhillips ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 1, 2014

A gentle adventure that sets the stage for future quests.

A lonely prince gains a friend for a quest to find a missing jewel.

Prince Lucas of Wrenly has everything a boy could possibly want—except a friend. His father has forbidden him to play with the village children for reasons of propriety. Adventure-seeking Lucas acquires peasant clothes to masquerade as a commoner and make friends, but he is caught out. His mother, the queen, persuades the king to allow him one friend: Clara, the daughter of her personal dressmaker. When the queen’s prized emerald pendant goes missing, Lucas and Clara set off to find it. They follow the jewel as it changes hands, interviewing each temporary owner. Their adventure cleverly introduces the series’ world and peoples, taking the children to the fairy island of Primlox, the trolls’ home of Burth, the wizard island of Hobsgrove and finally Mermaid’s Cove. By befriending the mermaids, Lucas and Clara finally recover the jewel. In thanks, the king gives Clara a horse of her own so that she may ride with Lucas on their future adventures. The third-person narration is generally unobtrusive, allowing the characters to take center stage. The charming, medieval-flavored illustrations set the fairy-tale scene and take up enough page space that new and reluctant readers won’t be overwhelmed by text.

Book Review: War Horse, by Michael Morpurgo

war_horse_cover

War Horse by Michael Morpurgo is a fiction story that is filled with passion, inspiration, and loyalty. Thorough out this book the author reveals surprises in between twisted mysteries that make you not want to miss a part or even set the book down. Michael Morpurgo is an English author, poet, playwright and librettist, best known for his work in children’s literature. He was the third Children’s Laureate. War Horse is his most famous piece of work.

War Horse begins with a young colt name Joey living out his days next to his strong, healthy mother. But this was not going to last for long. When Joey was only a young horse, he was taken to the auction with his mother. Two different people fought for the two horses. The colt and his mother said their last goodbye before turning back to back and going their separate ways. Joey was bought by a young boy name Albert that immediately fell in love with him. The two were inseparable. Albert taught Joey to plow and work on the farm. He also lived with another horse named Topthorn. “Topthorn was the first horse I had ever come across that I felt could challenge me for strength, but there was also a kindness in his eye that held no threat for me” (18). However, Albert’s dad was not pleased with Albert’s new treasure. This began a long and hard disagreement.

The conflict in this story was uprising fast. After Albert and his father finally got over their huge disagreement. Albert’s father without Albert knowing took Joey back to town and sold him to the military to pull heavy machinery and to plow the fields. Soon after Joey was gone, Albert found Joey’s stall empty and his heart sank. Albert sprinted into town to find that only the general was still there. Without taking a moment to think, Albert signed up for the military to go after his beloved Joey.

If you are a person that really enjoys strong stories about relationships between animals and people, then this is the book for you. Joey and Albert both show strong bonds towards each other. In this book, trust plays a big role in the life of both Joey and Albert. At some points in the book Albert trusts Joey with his life and in other parts Joey has to relay on Albert to be his voice. “Any problem can be solved between people if only they can trust each other” (127). This book has many themes. Most are impressive and hard to find. War Horse is one of my favorites and I look forward to seeing other people reading this incredible fiction book.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend War Horse to anyone ages 10 and up. I would choose this book for ages 10 and up because there are a few words that are of a higher level and there are a couple advanced death scenes in the book. But overall, this is an incredible book for both horse lovers and people that enjoy loyal stories. Is Joey ever reunited at the farm with Albert? I don’t know. You have to read it to find out.

-Alexandra L., 7th grade

I really enjoyed this, it was really interesting.

people like my sister would like this book about the war

A bit sad but also some happy parts

Like this book good story

It was decent, but a little bland, I didn't feel a true taste with it.

I liked this book but it is quite sad as so many people die

I was very sad when the dad sold the horse to the army, and that Albert wasn't aloud to join the army to keep him.

I was happy when Joey was reunited with Albert

I really enjoyed this book, although it is sad in parts being based during the war. I plan to watch the film now I have read the book.

A gripping read

Loved Joey the horse and main character. I liked him because he was the main character telling his story and what it was like to be a horse during World War I. Yes I would recommend it to others. Makes me want to watch the film too.

Would absolutely recommend this read. It is sad as it tells the story of horses during WW1 and what they went through.

The settings jn this book were amazing. You could really feel the atmosphere on the farm and on the battle-field. It's message on the futility of war is very clear. The characters are beautifully described.

Such a good story

I really enjoyed this book for a couple a reasons:

- It was a long book and I LOVE long books - I liked the fact the book came from the horse's perspective as that is pretty rare in books

it was a bit intersting but it dint inspirer me that much i mostly like it but not that much

I liked Joey the best because he persevered and joined the First World War’s cavalry even though he was inexperienced . I would definitely recommend it to a friend as it is very interesting and intriguing.

Wonderful story but sad in meantime. Im glad that in the end the horse was treat well and finally he find the first owner who always treated him well

In the chaos of the first world war, unfortunately just one beautiful horse called Joey was witnessed the battle between our soldiers and Germany and in the end he reunited with Albert, the wonderful young boy who served in our army and the love between them cannot be separated

Loved this book, the story is linked to important topics like war and how Important horses are. I have told my friends to read it.

I thought this book was ok but I would prefer different Michael Morpurgo books. In fiction my favorite character is Albert who looked after joey the horse I would recommend this book to horse lovers

I enjoyed it a lot. My favourite character was bill. I would recommend it for readers aged 9 - 100 as some parts are a bit sad.

I liked this book because it showed a story in the horses veiw. It showed kind and greatfulness throughout the story in some way.

Best book ever1

This made me cry, beautifully written. I love animals

Really enjoyed this book it was very powerful and emotional.

It was interesting and set during WW1 time. There was lots of technical vocabulary about horses and the war. It is written by the perspective of a horse and his relationship with a boy. There is lots of key dates and figures to do with the war. I would recommend this book to others especially people interested with horses role in WW1. It is written by Michel Morpurgo.

by Ashwin Stopp

this book has been good since the start

This book I think is the best book I have ever read although it has made my cry a bit it is a heartwarming story that I think everyone should read

Book Review: War Horse by Michael Morpurgo

book review war horse

Michael Morpurgo's children's book, War Horse , crosses the limits of being a children's book... it turns into a beautiful product of light... showing the high level of strong bond between animals and humans. Adults should read: War Horse .

War Horse is the story of a young colt – Joey who is sold off at an auction and separated from her mother. Further on in the story, the connection between Joey and Albert is absolutely touching. After Joey is bought by Albert's father, the short-lived happy friendship between the horse and Albert leaves both of them heart-broken due to separation. The youth, Albert, follows his gut feeling about finding Joey who has been bought by the military forces for war purposes. He enlists to serve in the army, and the background is of the period of World War-1.

The plot depicts the year around 1914, when Joey, while living those times at the wrecked farmhouse has to go through the agony of war and destruction, because Joey is employed by the military forces to work for them. The scenes of suffering and death surface powerfully through the versatility of Michael Morpurgo's style of writing. The novel recounts the experiences of Joey working day and night at the frontline, the tragic meaning of war is very well unveiled by the author. Apart from horse lovers falling in love with this book, plenty of other readers will take an instant liking to the book.

In 2007, the book became an award winning play. The film adaptation by Steven Spielberg was in 2011. As the author, Michael Morpurgo has won the Whitbread Award, the Smarties Award, The Circle of Gold Award, The Children's Book Award, and was short-listed for the Carnegie Medal 4 times.

War Horse unlocks the raging emotions of wartime issues... issues of relationships and circumstances... connections between animals and humans. The story resonates about courage, love and much more.

War Horse published by the Scholastic in the United States sold more than 2,00,000 in print.

War Horse was published in 1982 by Kaye & Ward.

War Horse is certainly one case in which the book is better than the movie.
