The School of Architecture and Environment at the University of the West of England invites applications for a Fully Funded Doctoral Researcher in the MSCA Doctoral Network QUIVAL – Quantum Inspired Valuation of circular real estate.   

Do you want to be part of the circular revolution to rethink the way we value the built environment?  In order to make our cities more circular, we need to fundamentally revisit the way that we define and quantify the value of our built environment. 

Project Overview

This fully-funded doctoral project is part of a Marie Sklodowska Curie Action Doctoral Network, QuiVal, a programme funded by the European Union in the Horizon Europe MSCA-DN programme under grant agreement No 101169048, with the aim to develop a fundamentally new approach to real estate valuation, allowing the sector to rapidly transition towards a more sustainable, low carbon and circular future. QuiVal is a transdisciplinary doctoral training programme across 8 universities and 14 industry partners, and including 13 doctoral candidates who will work, together and separately, to rethink the philosophy, principles and processes of valuation. The programme is co-produced by leading academics and practitioners who are passionate and knowledgeable about the real estate industry and about sustainability. Five objectives have been developed through which to achieve the aim, and each doctoral project will respond to one of these objectives.  For an overview of all the vacancies of QuiVal, see  here .

PhD Topic Description

The doctoral project at the University of the West England (research project 1c) is part of the response to the first objective, ‘Quantum inspiration and implementation’. The project will explore potential mechanisms for enabling the paradigm shift in real estate valuation. A mixed methods approach is proposed to consider how valuation is influenced by governance, behaviours and structures, through in-depth case studies of valuation practices, expert elicitation on the potential of new tools, data and concepts, and wider surveys of the real estate sector, enabled through the project partners. The project will analyse this data to produce a proposed a theoretical framework through which to consider the (re)construction of valuation within the real estate sector and a set of recommendations for the effective implementation of a new valuation approach through new governance mechanisms and structural changes within the industry. As well as a dissertation, and a number of academic papers, the project will produce an accessible report for real estate professionals.

The doctoral candidate (DC) will spend the majority of the funded three years at the University of the West of England in Bristol, United Kingdom, but will also be funded for two periods on secondment to QuiVal partners, one to industry partner Jones Lang Lasalle in the UK and the other to university partner ETH in Zurich, Switzerland. There will also be significant opportunities for sharing knowledge and fostering discussions with the other 12 DCs, through five workshops and three summer schools. The DCs will work together to collect data and collaborate with stakeholders including a network of industry frontrunners who are partners in the programme, increasing understanding, research impact, and chances of employment in the real estate and related sectors.

Applicants may apply in any subject area offered in the Schools, but it is essential that the proposed research fully aligns with one of the UWE’ Bristol's four main research priority areas:

  • Digital Futures
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Creative and Digital Technologies
  • Sustainability and Climate Change Resilience

Please ensure that you have contacted and gained the agreement of a suitable potential supervisor prior to your application. We would expect to appoint at least four candidates through this route.

Proposals should be no more than 1500 words long and should include and outline of the project, the relationship of the project to the advertised themes, the UWE-fit for the project (e.g., supervision, research centre or group), and the importance/timeliness of the project.

For either route you would normally be expected to have a 2:1 degree in a relevant subject area. A related Masters’ degree or further appropriate research experience is desirable.

Candidates invited for interview will be interviewed by a panel including College Leads in Postgraduate Research and members of the potential supervisory team. Following this interview process, the successful candidates will be offered a studentship and other candidates will be notified within two weeks of the interview.

Candidates who meet the criteria to study at UWE Bristol but are not offered one of the eight studentships will be offered the opportunity to consider pursuing a self-funded PhD.

If you're looking to specialise or upskill in this field, this master's will equip you to apply data science techniques in your current role and organisation, or to progress onto new work opportunities.

Looking at the full data science pipeline, you'll learn to understand organisational requirements and ethical conduct; design research studies; and employ data engineering skills to gather, transform and clean small and large-scale data.

Gain the skills and tools to design and implement data science projects and programmes to solve real business and societal issues.

Undertake exploratory analysis, using statistics, machine learning and predictive modelling.

Present and communicate results to stakeholders, and become adept at implementing production workflows and solutions.

You'll work on live data science projects, using data and issues from your own company (if applicable) and those of our industrial partners.

Where can it take me?

The course has been developed as part of the Institute of Coding's University Learners employability initiative, to ensure it equips data scientists with the skills needed by industry.

Your newly-acquired skills will set you up well for work as a data scientist, business analyst, data engineer or chief data officer.

The optional modules listed are those that are most likely to be available, but they may be subject to change. 

You'll study the following core modules:

This structure is for full-time students only. Part-time students study the same modules but the delivery pattern will be different.

Learning and Teaching

The course is taught through a mix of context, theory and hands-on practice, with both individual and group learning activities built in.

Studying the role of a data scientist, you'll become familiar with areas such as ethical practice and data for sustainable development; research methods, data gathering and exploratory data analysis; and programming principles (including R, Python and HTML/Javascript).

Learn to use statistical inference, modelling and analysis, machine learning and predictive analytics.

Understand how to store, process and analyse big data.

Build skills in evidence-based communication, argumentation and data visualisation.

Implement data science projects from end to end, using real data to address business, health and sustainability problems.

Gain exposure to a range of current data science methods and tools.

Take part in a substantial interdisciplinary group project.

You'll have access to extracurricular opportunities such as team competitions, data hackathons and paid projects for external clients through our enterprise studio network, The Foundry.

Mentoring will be available for self-organised student teams taking part in data science competitions and hackathons.

Full-time (over one year): 8 hours a week of teaching and related activities, and 16 hours a week on self-directed study. 

Part-time (over two years): 4 hours a week of teaching and related activities, and 8 hours a week on self-directed study.

Entry requirements

We normally require an honours degree at 2:2 or equivalent in a relevant subject. Experience with quantitative methods and/or coding is highly recommended.

Relevant subjects include: Computer Science, IT or other computing subjects, Maths, Statistics, any Engineering subject, any quantitative subject such as Physics, Chemistry, Business, Marketing, Economics, Psychology and Social Sciences.

If you do not meet the above grade requirements but have at least 12 months relevant professional experience and/ or equivalent qualifications, we will consider you on an individual basis.

The Doctor of Philosophy degree is conferred by the School of Engineering primarily in recognition of competence in the subject field and the ability to investigate engineering problems independently, resulting in a new contribution to knowledge in the field.

Academic Advisor

A temporary academic advisor will be provided to the student upon admission. The student and advisor must meet prior to registration for the second quarter to complete a preliminary program of studies, which will be determined largely by the coursework needed preparatory to the preliminary exam.

Preliminary Exam

A preliminary exam is offered at least once per year by the School of Engineering as needed. The purpose is to assure that the students have sufficient knowledge of fundamental principles in one or more Mechanical Engineering disciplines. The exam will test material covered in typical first-year graduate level MECH subjects, and we expect students to spend sufficient time (at least a couple of months) to pass the exam. Each student is required to choose one Mathematics subject and two MECH subjects for the test in consultation with their PhD advisor . Up to two hours will be given for each subject, but detailed arrangements of the test may vary for subjects. Candidates must reach out to the faculty in charge of each subject to understand the scope and arrangement of the exam (duration, use of a calculator, open/closed books, suggested textbooks for preparation, etc.)
