My simple review is: It was made for people who haven't read the manga. The story was lacking. In the best way, it was too soft. Vanitas' issues were downplayed. Especially during the ball and he was reduced to "Silly looking Vani wants to play doctor." It's supposed to be bread crumbs. A slow fall. Important things were dropped. Things in the catacombs were dropped. Foreshadowing is a key player here. Animation was good. It kept the pretty boy style and didn't rob Jeanne of her shape. I really have nothing to say about sound. Characters, characters, characters. Yes I love the characters but not as much here. Vanitas went from angry at him self to sad boi. Domi had more to her character. Her obsession with Jeanne was not simply to dance and make Noe upset. Olivier... I won't start on him. Characters had corners chisseled off. They were ironed out. They were watered down. It's disappointing. What saves this and gives it a better review? Animation and sound. But a note to everyone getting upset about the ending being given away in the beginning: It's a history. That's why episodes and chapters are called memiors. Adding on as RIPAnime suggests: I find the characters watered down because there wasn't enough time to explain the issues they have. Parts that could help were skipped. Vanitas has issues with his past and he has those issues today. Dominique isn't upset simply because of Noe not returning her feelings. She likes and cares for Jeanne genuinely, but the affection isn't there enough. Character development does happen later, but it seems like it will be harder without these starting pieces. While we don't get to the bottom of their past at the beginning, we haven't gotten far from the surface when we should be digging a hole. this shit is fucking amazing. good job bones for doing the manga justice. Vampires in Paris, The City of Flowers, beware, something evil lurks, hunting for your true name. Child or elder, it matters not. Parade of Charlatan will twist you, make you a monster. You're own family will be your feast. Your only salvation is the infamous clockwork grimoire, The Book of Vanitas or death. Noé Archiviste searches for the book, only to have it come to him via a charismatic, unhinged young man calling himself Vanitas, a vampire doctor. Whitty, bloody, and sexy (but not ecchi); it's quite the fun ride. As the series progresses we learn more about the characters' dark, blood splattered pasts all with beautiful art and comedy mixed in. If you like this series, I recommend reading the manga of the same title to get deeper into these characters. The anime is nearly all canon, but there are a few things that are glossed over. I rate it 16+. A child is beheaded right in front of their friend. Lots of blood and thoughts of suicide. Related animeLMYK: 0 (zero) (English Version) - 2021-08-19 - 2021-08-19

🇬🇧 The Case Study of Vanitas (Official)10 Great Anime Shows With Terrible Endings, RankedYour changes have been saved Email is sent Email has already been sent Please verify your email address. You’ve reached your account maximum for followed topics. Many anime have been released over the past two decades, more so with plenty of manga being licensed in English over the past decade. The increasing amount of licensed manga has contributed to the yearly output of anime, which has had a considerable boom since 2012 with popular releases of anime like Attack on Titan , Kamisama Kiss , Sword Art Onlin e, and Psycho-Pas s , among others. However, while plenty of these anime have started off great, many others have ended terribly. This can leave a bitter taste in one's mouth, especially when an anime has the potential to become something much bigger than it already is. This can sometimes be due to anime-original plotlines or even just plain bad writing. Whether it be due to disappointment or an unsatisfying end, here are the anime that had so much potential and greatness stored within them, only to fail when it came to the ending. 10 Jūni Taisen: Zodiac War (2017)Directed by naoto hosoda. Every twelve years, a Zodiac Tournament takes place. During the twelfth Zodiac Tournament, there are twelve combatants, each one representing a Chinese zodiac and having attributes associated with their animal zodiac. All of the warriors are to swallow poisonous beast gems and to become victor and have any wish they want granted, they must retrieve the other gems. Tsugiyoshi Sumino is one of the twelve zodiac warriors, otherwise known as Rat. Jūni Taisen: The Zodiac War is a unique anime that includes the Chinese zodiac, attributing certain skills and powers to characters who represent each animal. Interesting from start to finish, Jūni Taisen is an extremely underrated anime based on the all-favorite concept of surviving against all odds. However, unfortunately, Jūni Taisen falls off at the end, where the protagonist becomes the victor, and his wish is granted: to forget everything that happened. While this wish might be suitable for Rat's character, it doesn't feel like the buildup and development were worth it. Instead, it feels anti-climactic, creating an unsatisfying end that viewers will likely remember more than the show itself. Watch on Crunchyroll 9 Amnesia (2013)Directed by yoshimitsu ohashi. A college girl wakes up with amnesia. A spirit named Orion accompanies her as she navigates life with no memory, as it is his fault she has amnesia. The two of them then work together to piece her life together, though she is to keep her amnesia a secret. However, the more she uncovers, the more secrets she has to unveil, and a deeper truth is to be discovered. Amnesia is based on an otome game of the same name. Admittedly, otome games are hard to incorporate into anime, mainly because they are decision-making games where players get to choose what route they want to take. Although other otome games have been successful as anime— Clannad , for example— Amnesia struggled toward the end. It establishes an interesting premise, where the protagonist is thrown from universe to universe when she faces death; however, in the end, the heroine is left to choose her own path of the four shown to her. Each card before her leads to a life with a man she has once loved, but the final episode is confusing and the ending leaves off on a cliffhanger that ultimately isn't satisfying. Watch on Roku 8 Pandora Hearts (2009)Directed by takao kato. Oz Vessalius is the heir to the Vessalius house. However, during his coming-of-age ceremony, he is forced into the abyss by a group of cloaked individuals known as the Baskervilles. In the abyss, he meets Alice, a chain called B-Rabbit, where he makes a contract with her and escapes the abyss. He learns, though, that ten years have passed, and he joins Pandora to discover the truth behind the fall of Sablier, the city that fell to the abyss. Pandora Hearts is another unique anime that follows a team of friends as they venture to discover the hidden truth behind the past of the world. It is by the same creator as The Case Study of Vanitas , and like The Case Study of Vanitas , Pandora Hearts has a lovable cast of characters and interesting antagonists. However, while the anime is great and fun, it falls short at the ending, as plenty of loose ends are left hanging. Maybe the director had planned for a follow-up season, but from where the anime stands, nothing is answered, and so many viewers who watch the anime will find the ending unsatisfying, even though its manga counterpart is a complete masterpiece. Pandora Hearts7 sunday without god (2013), directed by yūji kumazawa. In a world where God has abandoned his world, humans have lost the ability to give birth and die. Fifteen years later, the story follows a young girl named Ai, who is a gravekeeper. Gravekeepers are gifts from God, and they have the ability to put humans to rest; otherwise, they live on as undead creatures with a sense of self. However, one day, Ai returns to her village to find them all immobilized. This appears to be the work of an immortal man named "Hampnie Hambart." Ai learns the truth hidden from Hampnie while also learning that he is her father. Ai then travels the world in search of the truth and to fulfill her role as a gravekeeper. Sunday Without God is a beautiful anime that explores the philosophy of life, death, and what it truly means to be alive. It has beautiful, vibrant visuals that encapsulate a world that is so free and no longer bound by rules. Not to mention, it develops an interesting and complex cast of characters, ranging from an immortal who so desperately wants to die to a gravekeeper who is supposed to be a lifeless doll that suddenly develops emotion and desires. However, despite its beauty in visuals and story, the anime leaves off on a confusing end. It suffers from a confusing plotline in its final arc, and despite its somewhat beautiful end, it needs several rewatches for viewers to begin to fully understand the complex world. 6 Darling in the Franxx (2018)Directed by atsushi nishigori. In a dystopian future, children are artificially created, and relationships and childbearing are no longer sought out by immortal adults. The children that are created are then used to defend the last of humanity. These children are then used to pilot the Franxx, with them working in male-female duos. Hiro is one such pilot candidate prodigy who can no longer synchronize with his partner, and thus they fail the program. Then he meets Zero Two, an elite pilot who loses her partner during the graduation ceremony. The two then partner together, creating a unique team to pilot the Franxx. Darling in the Franxx is a popular meca anime that echoes favorites like Neon Genesis Evangelion , Gurren Lagann , and Gundam . Though it has a rather unique art style and interesting premise, the ending feels too rushed, leaving an unsatisfying conclusion for the viewers. Darling in the Franxx is one of those anime that viewers are hesitant to watch, but it is entertaining and fun to watch from the beginning until the disappointing end. 5 Akame ga Kill! (2014)Directed by tomoki kobayashi. Tatsumi and his two childhood friends, Iyeyasu and Sayo, travel to the capital city to make money. During a bandit attack, Tatsumi is separated from his friends, though he is taken in by a noble family. Then one night, during an attack by the infamous Night Raid, Tatsumi learns that his friends were tortured and killed by the family, and the same was going to happen to him. Tatsumi then joins the Night Raid as a result, and his journey only then begins. Akame ga Kill! , though very dark, is a colorful anime with a distinct cast of characters. It's a wild ride from the very first episode, often evoking twists that viewers truly do not expect. While exciting and action-oriented, Akame ga Kill! has an anime-original ending, which is not as satisfying when compared to the original ending of the manga. By the end of Akame ga Kill! , every character that viewers love—including that of the protagonist—ends up dying, leaving a bittersweet taste in the mouth of viewers. Watch on Apple TV+ 4 Death Note (2006)Directed by tetsurō araki. Light is a high school student who one day discovers the Death Note . Upon picking it up, he assumes the identity of a god named Kira, and he uses the notebook at his disposal to get rid of criminals and those who oppose his idea of a new world. However, an opposing force defies Light and his beliefs, and that is Detective L. Both use their high intelligence against each other in a battle of the wits, where only one will survive. Death Note is controversial when it comes to endings. It's a great anime, one that viewers will continue to talk about for years to come. However, while it is a great anime, it's the ending and final arc that viewers have a problem with. While the ending of Light dying feels right, as he has gone wild with power after the departure of L. While in plenty of cases, both protagonists deaths do not feel earned, in Death Note's case, they definitely do. However, while this is the case, the rest of the ending was disappointing, including that of the last arc of the anime. Since L has died, not a single character has been able to fight back against Light in a strategic way, like in a chess match. Rather, new characters are incorporated into the final arc, many of which fans enjoyed, but as for the next enemy of Light, Near felt like a cheap copy of L. While Light's demise was earned, the way his death occurred was more disappointing. Death Note (2006)Not available 3 Black Butler (2008)Directed by toshiya shinohara. Ciel Phantomhive is the heir to the Phantomhive household. After a fire that killed his parents and Ciel was kidnapped and tortured, he summoned and made a contract with a demon. The demon would have his soul—only after he took revenge on those who humiliated his family. In the meantime, the demon has taken on the name Sebastian and the appearance of a butler who will serve Ciel's every desire and whim, no matter what. Black Butler is such an intriguing anime where a demon acts as a servant; it includes a lot of comedic moments between the bantering duo, and Black Butler's large cast of characters always leads to exciting and fun moments, creating an enriching and wonderful world of politics. However, while the first season started off strong, eventually it followed an anime-original storyline—and ending—which is where the series started going downhill. While the first season of the anime introduced a whole new cast of semi-interesting characters—Pluto, Ash, Angela—it also led to Ciel's achieved vengeance. So while the manga was—and still is—ongoing, the ending of the first season led to a dead-end for any future Black Butler installment. At least, that is until Season 2 was established, and that in itself became such an awful mess, introducing a new, practically cheap copy of Ciel in the guise of Alois Trancy and his demon butler Claude Faustus. The entirety of Season 2 (and half of Season 1 ) has since been retconned, and Black Butler has a whole new Season 2 , following the manga very closely with its Book of Circus season, and even adapting other arcs through films. So while Black Butler had an awful ending, thankfully it is being retconned and rewritten. Black Butler2 wonder egg priority (2021), directed by shin wakabayashi. A young girl named Ai Ohto receives an obscure egg called the Wonder Egg one day while visiting a mysterious arcade. During a dream, though, the egg ends up breaking, and out comes a young girl whom Ai protects and saves. Ai learns that she could potentially bring back her deceased best friend if she saves enough people from the Wonder Eggs. Along the way, Ai meets other people who are in a similar situation. Wonder Egg Priority is a lighthearted anime that also deals with heavy topics of harassment and suicide, among others, in a mature and appropriate manner. Amazing and delicate from start to finish, Wonder Egg Priority is undoubtedly one of the best anime of the last decade. Dealing with grief and loss, it's hard not to relate to or appreciate Wonder Egg Priority for its complicated storytelling. However, the anime falls short at its disappointing ending, which feels rushed beyond anything else, which might be due to the 12-episode constriction. There are still open threads that are never dealt with, and most viewers find themselves dissatisfied with the ending, though the anime itself is by no means awful. 1 The Promised Neverland (2019)Directed by mamoru kanbe. Emma is one of many orphans at Grace Field House. Under the careful watch of Isabella, Emma and her fellow orphans study hard and play games together until they are chosen to be adopted. One day, a friend of Emma's is adopted, and as Norman and Emma race to return her stuffed animal before she's "adopted" out, they discover her corpse and learn the truth about the orphanage: the Grace Field House is raising children to be food for demons. Emma and her friends then decide to help the other children escape so that they may have a chance at life. One of the strongest and most exciting seasons in anime ever, The Promised Neverland, had so much potential. However, Season 2 being the final season, The Promised Neverland ultimately felt rushed as manga arcs were skipped, and in the process, viewers ultimately got stumped and confused due to the open plot threads and lack of danger that was felt in the first season. Unfortunately, The Promised Neverland loses its intrigue in Season 2 , and it never lives up to the hype that Season 1 established for the series. Disappointing is the best way to describe the end of The Promised Neverland , though the first season was absolutely great. KEEP READING: The 10 Best Anime Series of the 2000s, Ranked |
