Thanmathra Malayalam Movie
Blessy's second directorial venture Thanmathra hit the screens without much ado, but is quietly stealing its way into the hearts of the viewers. The film is an adaptation of ace director Padamarajan's short story 'Orma'.
It tells the story of Remeshan Nair (Mohanlal), a state Govt. employee who leads a simple and happy life with his wife Lekha (Meera Vasudevan), son Manu (Arjun) a plus two student and daughter Manju (Niranjana) a primary school student. Remeshan is afflicted by Alzheimer's disease and suffers from gradual memory loss. How this affects the family forms the gist of the story.
The way Remeshan becomes aware of the malady that is affecting him is brought out through minute instances - the way he forgets to switch on the scooter, the way he uses his son's brush to brush his own teeth, the way he forgets an official file inside the freezer of the fridge at home, the way he forgets his way to home, the way he thinks he is at home while actually in office.
The film does not make one sad or angry, but leaves one thinking what it would be if one were afflicted by the same illness. That's where Blessy's success lies. The story is poignant and gripping and well told by the director. Mohanlal's restrained acting does more than justice to the role. The same can be said of most of the others who act in the film including Nedumudi Venu who plays the role of Remeshan's father Krishnan Nair.
Special mention should however be made of new find Arjun, a native of Chalakudy who lives with his parents in Dubai. He is a natural. He must be flooded with offers after his performance in the film. With just two films under his belt, director Blessy shows all the markings of a top flight story teller. Already noted directors like Fazil, Sathyan Anthikaad and Priyadarshan have come forward in praise of Blessy's work.
Camera work by Sethu Sriram is superb. Music by Mohan Sitara is just about average. Despite its low-key release, Thanmathra is one of the best movies released in recent months, and a must-watch.

Mohanlalness
Usually I am kinda nervous about rewatching darker movies from my childhood, cuz they most often turn out to be laughably bad.
But…duuddddeee, this so much better than when I was like 6 or 7. Mannnn….each and every scene is connected and adds so much depth to the other one.
The scene where Nedumudi Venu tells to put more sugar in the tea and then in the next scene when Rameshan receives his tea…he starts picking the undiluted sugar from the bottom of the glass… Such small detailing bring a lot of depth to the story…it’s not some random Rameshan Nair loosing his memories…he becomes your friend, your father, your childhood…and sometimes even yourself…
I also saw another layer…

Mohanlal in the last hour of this movie proves why he is the GOAT. What a performance! Thought he couldn't get better than his performance in Vanaprastham, I've been proved wrong.
Review by Varghese ★★★★½
Listing my favorite performances of Lalettan is one of the toughest things to do. I mean how does one choose? The subtle rage of Vaanaprastham? The grief stricken talented brother of Bharatham? The love stricken Vishnu inThalavattom? The defeated Gulf Returnee in Varavelpu? The comic timing in Chitram?. Notice how naturally he "acts" in the office scene thinking it's his own home, you feel like laughing but at the same time can't help feeling empathy for an individual struggling with his own demons. He is caring, child like and vulnerable. He conjures up the entire repertoire of emotions in his arsenal to deliver a sublime masterclass. In fact he himself becomes an irony as he turns out what he himself preached against.

Malayalam March Challenge #24
What a beautiful film about a serious disease. Lalettan gives one of the best performance! A classic Malayalam film with intense emotions and strong connection to the lives of middle class people. I got so emotional in the end 🥺
Life becomes a full circle when you become old and behave like a new born baby again.
Review by M S Krishna Prateek ★★★★½
My long-overdue introduction to the work of Blessy sir because I was always scared of watching this film over the years from what all I heard about it, especially in terms of Lalettan's performance and finally gave up the fear to sit through it and needless to say how much it broke me into pieces, but more than the breaking, I found the piercing together of these broken pieces back through this thing called love the most moving part of the film because to quote Haneke from the making of Amour , he says there that Amour is a film primarily about love or the ultimate pain of seeing your loved ones suffer and that he didn't want to reduce the…

Even the sun rays that light up the world lasts for only a day.
The idea of having your memories slowly erased with no way to fight it, that's the stuff nightmares are made of. THANMATHRA is a real and heart-breaking portrayal of a disease that shouldn't exist. The movie does an excellent job of showing what it can be like living with or with someone who has been diagnosed. It's unfair, and turns even extremely bright minds into mush.
THANMATHRA does a hell of a job to at least show us one person's struggle, and how his family copes. The gradual slip into just complete mental incompetence is so sad to watch, credit going to Mohanlal . Arjun Lal and everyone else make this thing so believable. You connect with Rameshanʼs character right away and are instantly rooting for his family to win. But then you realize what Alzheimer's really is.

Film that makes me cry
"A river of human emotions...."
I have watched this movie for the first time, when it was in theatres back in 2005, with my family. I still remember everyone on the hall walked out after the movie with teardrops rolling over their cheeks. No, it's not because it was a terrible movie. It was a beautiful experience. It was every middle-class Keralite's story.
what makes a movie so beloved to us? Most accurate answer is that it should reflect yourself. A father who have high hopes for his talented son, a son who works hard to fulfil his father's dreams. A little sister and a mother who supports…

These earlier works of Blessy hasn’t aged well, that is, technically.
I remember being emotionally wrecked by this film back then. Not so much today. Didn’t even cry, to be honest. It’s fine nonetheless, though not as great as I remembered it to be all these years.
P. S. Has one of the goofiest title card themes lol.

Revisiting this classic yet again reminds us, why Mohanlal is indeed THE best actor ever produced in India.
Review by PrinceKSP ★★★★
Since my mom Usha taught me about Einstein in my kindergarten days itself, I couldn't bring myself to believe the 10% of the brain myth propagated by Mohanlal's son in the film's opening scene but other than that Director Blessy leaves no room for false notes in Thanmathra (2005).
Thanmathra will definitely wreck your heart If u shared a healthy bond with your parent. The bond I shared with my Mom was a lot like Rameshan (Mohanlal) and his son, my mom's falling mental health severely weakened her cognitive skills when I was in 3rd STD.
Having helplessly grown up watching a special bond disintegrate, Thanmathra was heartbreakingly relatable to me on so many levels. While Mohanlal has done better…

Thanmathra ( Malayalam: തന്മാത്ര, English: Molecule) is a 2005 Indian Malayalam-language drama film written and directed by Blessy, based on Padmarajan's short story "Orma". [1] [2] It portrays the effects of Alzheimer's disease on the life of Ramesan Nair and his family. [3]
The movie is deeply going to the various areas of Alschimers. But it is not at all a film about Alschimers. It handles the deep level of family matters, the love and the pain and that changes the life of everyone for a new beginning. In my view it is one of the best movie ever made in Malayalam.
