Social Work Graduate Programs

About the master of social work program.

The mission of the graduate Social Work Program is to prepare students to serve as clinical social workers who practice in rural environments with the knowledge and skills at the master’s level to improve well-being for individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Available as either an on-campus or an online program, the emphasis is on promoting interdisciplinary learning and practice to actively address social issues. The graduate program simultaneously trains students in advanced clinical practice while also providing them with skills transferrable across all practice levels.

Online MSW Program Option

The master's in social work online program offers two entry points — the one that’s best for you will depend on your educational background and experience prior to enrollment.

  • Master of Social Work Foundation program  is intended for those looking to refocus or pivot their careers. This 17-course, 62-credit track is open to all eligible students with a bachelor’s degree and can be completed in as few as 10 semesters (40 months).
  • Master of Social Work — Advanced Standing program for students who have obtained a bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited university within the past 5 years may be eligible for our online. It offers an accelerated pathway where students explore strategies to help people in marginalized communities gain better access to social services.

On-Campus MSW Program Option

The MSW on-campus program has four options:

  • One-Year Advanced Standing (open only to recent graduates of CSWE-accredited undergraduate social work programs)
  • Two-Year Full Time
  • Three-Year Part Time
  • Four-Year Part Time

The three-year part-time on-campus option allows applicants to choose to take the first half of the MSW program over two part-time years rather than a single, full-time year. This option involves enrolling in the field during years two and three. In the four-year part-time on-campus option, applicants may spread the program out into four years of study, with years two and three requiring enrollment in the field. The MSW degree must be completed within four years of enrollment.

Special Program Focus

Responding to community demands, the Department of Social Work developed a master's program (on-campus and online option) with an emphasis on service in rural environments. The Master of Social Work (MSW) program was admitted to candidacy for accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education in February 1999 and has been fully accredited since 2002. The primary purpose of the program is to graduate clinical social workers who have the knowledge and skills for advanced practice in rural environments to improve the well-being of individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.

Program Learning Objectives

This MSW program is a competency-based program with 45 practice behaviors at the foundation level and 43 practice behaviors at the advanced level. The 9 social work competencies promulgated by the Council on Social Work Education (2015) are as follows:

  • Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior.
  • Engage diversity and difference in practice.
  • Advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice.
  • Engage in practice-informed research and research-informed practice.
  • Engage in policy practice.

  • Assess individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
  • Intervene with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
  • Evaluate practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.

One-Year Advanced Standing Status

The Advanced Standing Program is an accelerated curriculum option available only to highly qualified graduates of baccalaureate social work programs accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Consideration is given only to those undergraduate social work graduates with superior academic standing and exceptional references.

Applicants seeking Advanced Standing admission must meet all the admissions criteria required for standard admission. In addition, Advanced Standing applicants must:

  • Have, within five years of graduate school admission, earned a baccalaureate degree in social work from a program accredited by CSWE
  • Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • Have a reference from their senior-year field instructor
  • Submit a copy of the most recent evaluation of their senior year field placement.

Students admitted to the Advanced Standing program will be expected to engage in the field placement process during the spring semester prior to their program enrollment.

Program Requirements

The School’s mission reflects our vision of professional practice. Professional practice is culturally informed, grounded in cultural humility, and consistent with social work and health administration ethics and values; it is informed by theory and research; and it has empowerment and social justice as its goals. The school practices its mission in its programs and curricula, emphasizes co-curricular activities, and maintains relationships with students, alumni, field instructors, working partners, and community collaborators. The School of Social Work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The Executive Master of Health Administration program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Healthcare Management Education (CAHME).

The University of Cincinnati School of Social Work was established in 1978, but it traces its roots to 1923. At that time, UC and the Community Chest joined forces to offer a social work program based in the sociology department. This program ended in 1931, but other programs followed, including a public welfare administration program housed in the political science department from 1933-1938. From 1959-1972, UC hosted The Ohio State University School of Social Work’s branch program for graduate social work education. In 1969, an undergraduate social work program was established in the UC College of Community Services, and was accredited by the Council on Social Work Education in 1974. The next year a graduate social work program was begun, and in 1978 the University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees established the School of Social Work, consolidating the BSW and MSW programs in this new academic unit. The Council on Social Work Education accredited the graduate program in 1981, the same year that the School became an independent academic unit with the dissolution of the College of Community Services. When the graduate program was established, it offered only the social welfare administration concentration. The direct practice concentration was added in 1983 in response to community demand. In 1998, the graduate curriculum was modified to include specialized study opportunities in mental health, children and families, and health and aging for students in the direct practice concentration. Beginning in 2006, the graduate program has been offered off-campus to three cohorts of part-time students in Dayton and Hamilton, Ohio. Traditionally, the undergraduate program was an upper division program only, with students admitted into the program as juniors. In 2007, the School began accepting students directly from high school and as transfer students for the freshmen and sophomore years, allowing students to begin their social work studies immediately upon entering college. In 2010, the School of Social Work merged with the College of Allied Health Sciences, and grew to include a new graduate program in Health Administration. The School of Social Work has been continuously accredited by the Council on Social Work Education since 1981 and received reaffirmation of its accreditation most recently in 2019.

Accreditation

The Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education’s Commission on Accreditation.

Social Work Master of Social Work

Social Work has a long and rich tradition at Ohio State; we offered our first social work course in 1875 and awarded our first Master's degree in 1923. Accredited in 1919, Ohio State is the country's oldest continuously accredited social work program in a public university.

More than 9,000 alumni serve as leaders and change agents across the United States working as direct practitioners, administrators, evaluators, and analysts in a wide range of public, private, and government agencies.

The MSW program prepares graduates for advanced social work practice. The program consists of three principal parts:

  • Through the Foundation Curriculum students master the theoretical knowledge, professional values, and core competencies common to all social work practice.
  • The Advanced Practice  is highly applied and focuses on acquiring expertise as a master's prepared social worker in one of several practice areas.
  • The extensive field practicum experiences integrate theory and both foundation and advanced practice and provides highly mentored opportunities in which students further refine their skills as professional social workers.

Program Overview

The mission of the graduate Social Work Program is to prepare students to serve as clinical social workers who practice in rural environments with the knowledge and skills at the master’s level to improve well-being for individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. The graduate program simultaneously trains students in advanced clinical practice while also providing them with skills transferrable across all practice levels.

Special Program Focus

Ohio University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) Program trains social workers to work with rural families and communities. This focus was selected because it is appropriate for Ohio University and rural communities that have been traditionally underserved by social workers.

Program Concentrations

In the final year, students obtain advanced-level training in Clinical Social Work, while also gaining some exposure to macro level practice. These are the foci identified by area employers as those most needed in the region. Please note that this programmatic structure is beneficial also because only Clinical Social Workers qualify for National Health Service Corps Loan Reimbursement and clinical licensure in most states.

Opportunities for Graduates

Individuals with the MSW are sought out and employed in a wide variety of settings, including mental health, child welfare, health care, aging, chemical dependency, and corrections among others. A MSW from an accredited program (accredited by the CSWE) qualifies a student to participate in the procedures for independent licensing in all 50 states. Some organizations prefer the MSW such as Non-governmental Organizations, the Veterans Administration, and others. Social work is a growth profession for various reasons partly because the older generation is expected to increase dramatically in size, which presents various problems related to basic needs and optimal social functioning of the adult and the family. Another area of growth is social work for veterans and for people in transition due to prison reform and chemical dependency. The field of social work is expected to experience a 25% growth trend within the next ten years.

Program Learning Outcomes

The main objective of the program is to graduate clinical social workers who have the knowledge and skills for advanced practice in rural environments to improve the well-being for individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
