SNL Recap: Christmastime in Studio 8H

Saturday night live.

Saturday Night Live - Season 42

As Manchester by the Sea garners more and more Oscar buzz — and as Hollywood continues to skirt discussion of the sexual-harassment suits Casey Affleck settled out of court in 2010 — Affleck has arrived to host the last Saturday Night Live of the year. Despite reservations viewers may have about Affleck himself, the Ocean’s Eleven actor has shown a clear capability for understated-yet-playful performances. He’s mostly known for his brooding, haunted characters, so he’ll likely have the wherewithal and willingness to play with that type, too.

Donald Trump Christmas Cold Open

Surely the real Donald Trump had to be restrained from tweeting about this sketch last night, as it features the president-elect (Alec Baldwin) fielding visits from cabinet pick Rex Tillerson (John Goodman) and Vladimir Putin (Beck Bennett). As Tillerson and Putin catch up and plan their oil futures together , Trump chatters about his meeting with Kanye and why destroying Vanity Fair is such a big priority. Throw Kellyanne Conway (Kate McKinnon) in there, and it’s yet another savvy package that depicts an oafish, petty, and generally disconnected Trump.

Casey Affleck Christmas Monologue

This pre-show chat finds Affleck wondering why he’s hosting the Christmas show, refusing to sing, talking about the “incredibly depressing” Manchester , and eventually taking hosting advice from Baldwin, Goodman, and “Black Santa” (Kenan Thompson). Despite the presence of some SNL pros, it’s pretty dull stuff. A monologue will never make or break an episode, but if you know who Casey Affleck is, it’s not worth watching this hodgepodge of ideas without a through line.

Dunkin’ Donuts Commercial

What begins as a standard testimonial for Dunkin’ Donuts gets taken over by one Boston dude (Affleck) with a thick accent and an attitude problem. He defies the simple requests of shop employees, gets into a wrestling match with his pal on camera, and eventually hurls a cup of coffee at another dude’s windshield while crying out, “Go back to Starbucks!” All of the bad behavior makes for a fun minute-and-a-half. Also, because of SNL ’s new branded content, it’s a commercial parody and a commercial all at once. Thanks, the future of media!

Robot Presentation

Speaking of branded content, SNL might as well dump it all at the top of the night while everyone is still watching, right? In a sketch weirdly similar to another sponsored sketch from a few weeks ago, Microsoft employees (McKinnon and an underutilized Fred Armisen) unveil a smart robot (Beck Bennett) that happens to find men’s bodies sexy and wants to talk about its sexual interests all the time. A potential investor (Affleck) has lots of questions about these robots, but can’t quite open his mouth without coming across as a little homophobic. There’s not a lot to recommend in this one.

Jingle Barack

This homage to “Christmas in Hollis” casts Run DMC stand-ins (Thompson and musical guest Chance the Rapper) to celebrate the last Christmas with Barack Obama as president, while expressing concerns about Christmases to come. The dancing, rhymes, and costumes are delightful, even if there aren’t a lot of great, hard jokes in the piece. Plus, the real DMC shows up with a plea never to trust a white dude in a red hat — that is, Santa wearing a “Make America Great Again” ball cap. The highlight: Leslie Jones flying in on a sleigh to confess that Joe Biden makes her knees get weak.

Christmas Miracle

In this recurring sketch, a pair of country folk (Cecily Strong and, this time, Affleck) recount an amazing journey through the realm of the supernatural while poor Mrs. Rafferty (McKinnon) reports of the odd beating she took instead. This time, rather than an alien abduction or near-death experience, it’s Santa-related. While the couple had a magical time with St. Nick at the North Pole, Mrs. Rafferty had a much-less-glamorous interaction with some of Santa’s other helpers — a nine-foot tall goat man called Crinklemouse and a lesser elf named Shart who smelled like hard-boiled eggs. Although the once-startling surprises of McKinnon holding forth about her “cooter and tooter” feel expected now, the sketch is still really fun.

Weekend Update

“Well, Donald Trump is about a month away from his inauguration, and people are starting to notice some red flags,” says Michael Che, before the Soviet hammer and sickle pops up over his shoulder. That’s how Update begins, and from there, the hosts keep hitting on the story of Russian hacking. As Che explains, denying Trump the presidency now would be “like giving a monkey a machine gun and then trying to wrestle it back from him. At this point, all we can do is just pray he can’t figure out how it works, gets bored, and just puts it down and walks away.” Gags about Kanye’s meeting with Trump land well, too.

Vanessa Bayer and Fred Armisen come on as “Putin’s best friends.” While wearing big fur hats, they praise Putin until their doubts creep in, then they start whispering about little hypocrisies, like when his party invite said “no gifts” and he still shamed them for not bringing something. It’s true, people do drop into the sotto voce when talking trash, but applying this conceit to friendship with Putin isn’t the best fit. Rather than having another guest on, the Update hosts read some jokes that got cut earlier this year. Though jabs at Chipotle and Lyft are silly and a little gross, they’re still worth it. Despite the lackluster character bit, it’s a smart year-end finish for Update .

New York Now

On paper, this sketch seems like a good idea: Somewhere in Queens, a group of would-be thespians put on a nontraditional, wacky Christmas pageant that’s more comedy props and slapstick than scripture. After reporters give us a taste of the show — e.g. Mary opening a can of peanut brittle and finding spring snakes instead — they interview the performers involved. Watching people perform badly for the length of a sketch is one thing; Watching them talk about their bad performance is another entirely. None of the goofy bits are compelling, and the underlying notion about the performers being bad parents just doesn’t come through.

Hillary Actually

This elegant sketch, which parodies the cue-card scene from Love Actually , delivers a firm message in a gentle way. Hillary Clinton (McKinnon) shows up at the door of a female member of the Electoral College (Strong). While the elector’s husband believes his wife is listening to carolers, Hillary quietly delivers a message on cue cards about why the elector should vote for anyone other than Donald Trump. “It doesn’t even have to be me,” the cards read. “It could be … The Rock. A Rock.” The plea is charmingly delivered, and it even includes a $1,000 check to cover the fine that the elector would face if she failed to vote for Trump. The last message might be its clearest: “Keep in mind, if Donald Trump becomes president, he’ll kill us all.”

Mrs. Claus & the Elves

In another recurring sketch, three naughty elves (Thompson, Bayer, and Affleck) don’t follow through on their kitchen duties and hope to be physically disciplined by Mrs. Claus (Aidy Bryant). It’s the same formula as past incarnations, but to up the dirty factor, the elves talk about tossing Mrs. Claus’s salad and anticipate getting peed on by laying down some towels. There is one great provocation — “Why don’t you funnel that anger right into our butts?” — but there’s not a lot of new inspiration here. For his part, Affleck doesn’t seem to have as much fun with the material as Ryan Gosling did when he played the third elf last year .

Christmas Bar

The entirety of this sketch is built on one phrase: “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but … ” It begins simply, with one Brooklyn dude Tony (Mooney) who finds it hard to believe he’s asking Jessica (Bayer) for a date. From there, a rival challenges Tony for Jessica’s hand, the men fight, a bouncer restrains one of them, a medic arrives, and the dying rival gets invited to heaven by God — all the while, characters can’t believe they’re doing and saying things. I’ve spoiled it for you here because there’s really no reason to watch it. The false modesty implied by this bit of empty verbiage is certainly dumb, but it doesn’t earn all the attention it gets here.

Casey Affleck’s first hosting gig won’t go down in SNL history, but he shows decent competence throughout his sketches. The writers clearly think of him the same way they think about Ryan Gosling, but Affleck just isn’t as giddy of a performer. Perhaps if he brought the zeal he showed in the Dunkin’ commercial to all of the live sketches, it would’ve been a stronger night. The episode is something of a mixed bag, but the strong open, Update , and other holiday-related material make it a winning finish to 2016.

Watch Matthew McConaughey Pretend to Be a 3D-Printed Man in This 'SNL' Skit

It was all right, all right, all right.

Sure, we can 3D print satellites ( in space!), glass , and even detached nerves … but last night, SNL took things one step further: What if we could 3D print a man?

On the November 21 episode, hosted by Wooderson Matthew McConaughey, the SNL folks spoofed a science-tech conference (called “Bio Crunch 2015,” no less) with a presentation that asked audience members if they could determine which of three similarly dressed men was actually a 3D printed humanoid robot.

It all starts off simply enough, with Cecily Strong as the “3D Bio-Print” spokesperson, presenting Beck Bennett, Taran Killam, and McConaughey as the lineup of guys with which the company tries to stump the audience. “I’d like to introduce three men to you,” says Strong. “Two are human, but one of them was printed with a Bio-Print 3D printer. Can you tell who?”

That’s when we meet the guys who are dressed like triplets on their way to a piano recital in matching blue sweaters and khakis.

“Hello. Am I the 3D-printed man?” Bennett asks.

Killam is up next: “Hi there. Am I the 3D-printed man?”

Finally, it’s McConaughey’s turn. “Hi. Today,” he says, slipping right on into the Uncanny Valley with his inhumanly wide eyes and stilted speech pattern. “Am I the 3D printed man today.”

Obviously, McConaughey is the 3D-printed man. He goes on to answer questions with choice phrases like: “Who me. As for me, I’ve got to say every single one of the bananas,” and “Get out of here in your town with that question. You’re making a sunglasses guy like me laugh hard from my face. Ha. Ha. Ha. Oh, yeah.” Eventually, McConaughey’s 3D-printed man also goes on to show off his (terrible) walking skills and (equally horrifying) dance moves.

Bio-Print’s technology isn’t quite there… but in real life, there are robots that have learned consequence reasoning and how to say “no” to humans . While that might not quite be the personality or emotion SNL tried to capture with this faux-robot, there are definitely new leaps in being made in the humanoid robot field every day. (Even if humanoid robots aren’t the most innovative things ever.) We’re just glad the 3D-printed man didn’t go Terminator on anyone, because people are already afraid of robots enough as-is.

“Now, if you all wanna come up here and meet Bruce, you have about three minutes before he catches fire.”

Meet SNL ’s bizarro 3D-printed dude before his khakis ignite:

Ninja Mike : Ow..! That.. was humiliating!

Ninja Rob : Hey – thanks for backing me up out there!

Ninja Mike : Excuse me – but what am I supposed to do when this guy’s falling down on top of me!

Ninja Dave : Like that was my idea! That guy picked me up and threw me! I think I jammed my thumb..

Ninja Rob : [ mocking ] Oh.. I think I jammed my thumb..!

Ninja Leader : Okay, guys, pointing fingers won’t solve anything. Now, if we want to get out of this rut.. we have to learn from these little disasters. Now, before the fight, how did we all agree we should attack the guy?

Group : All together!

Ninja Leader : And how did we attack?

Group : One at a time..

Ninja Leader : That’s right. Now, what else went wrong?

Elder Ninja : Uh.. something I know I do all the time – when the guy’s back is turned, I try to sneak up behind him.

Ninja Rob : What’s wrong with that? That makes sense!

Elder Ninja : Well.. nine times out of ten, when I’m right behind him, he gives me one of these – whack!

Nervous Ninja : Another thing that never seems to work is.. yelling when you run up to him.

Ninja Leader : Does not work. Just lets ’em know yo’re coming.

Ninja Rob : I stopped yelling years ago. Steve? I’ve got a pointer for you : when I’m running at the guy, at full speed, don’t you run from the opposite direction. He’s just gonna step aside, and we’re gonna run into each other and bump heads! Again!

Ninja Steve : I hear that!

Ninja Leader : That must have happened five or six times today. And the thing you may not realize, Steve, is that after you’re unconcious, he’s picking you up and using you as a club to hit the rest of us!

Ninja Steve : [ fascinated ] Really?!

Ninja Leader : Oh, yeah! And you nearly broke my jaw with the back of that head of yours! [ chuckles ] Anyway, let’s put tonight behind us.. and focus on the future. Any new ideas?

Elder Ninja : Well, you know, I’ve been thinking that maybe these uniforms aren’t helping us, you know? There’s no way to surprise a guy in these things, they just scream ninja!

Ninja Mike : Yeah, yeah! What if we wore something more nondescript, like, uhh.. mailman outfits!

Ninja Leader : [ shaking head ] I don’t know.. I-I think if a guy sees a dozen mailmen coming after him, he’s gonna know something’s up.

Ninja Rob : We could carry letters! And packages!

Ninja Mike : Uh, yeah – addressed to who ?

Ninja Rob : It doesn’t matter! Occupant! Whatever!

Ninja Leader : Okay.. okay.. okay..! Let’s not get bogged down! Any other ideas?

Ninja Throwing Star Enthusiast : Well, I’ll tell you, I’m gonna say it again. I think we are really underestimating these throwing stars. You know, I had a couple of near hits tonight. I think if we made room in the budget to buy more throwing stars.. it’s really gonna help us out.

Punctured Ninja : Uh.. I think, uh.. before we get any more throwing stars, uh.. you should try to concentrate on accuracy .

Ninja Leader : Uh, you want some ice or something for that?

Punctured Ninja : No, thanks.. I’m trying not to, uh.. think about it..

Nervous Ninja : Well, I got an idea.. If, um.. what if.. we all wore, like, spikes on our stomachs.. so.. that.. when a guy goes to kick you.. he’ll, uh.. he’ll get, like, spikes in his foot!

Ninja Leader : [ thinking ] You know.. that’s the first really intelligent thing anyone’s said today! Now, does someone have a pen? We should write that down. [ no one in the group can find a pen ] Alright, never mind.. now, you know what we should do right now? Go out, as a group, find someone, and beat him up! It doesn’t have to be anyone special! Just.. the first guy we see down in the lobby! We’re really gonna pull it together, and beat him up as a team! It’ll be a real confidence builder! Now, are you with me?!

Nervous Ninja : Let’s get on it!! Let’s do it this time!!

Voiceover : [ over scrolling SUPER ] “The plucky ninjas never gave up. Over the years, they fought many more battles, never actually winning but often coming very close. Perhaps most important, the lessons they learned, and the friendships they formed as ninjas, lasted the rest of their lives.”

Hilmi Deniz Biliciler, with the robocar placed in front of a computer monitor to his right.

Hilmi Deniz Biliciler, who graduated with a degree in Computer Science in December 2023, has reached a significant milestone with the completion of his latest project at the Houghton Hall robotics lab area.

Over the course of two months, under the guidance of Department of Computer and Information Sciences Assistant Professor Shahin Mehdipour Ataee, Mr. Biliciler diligently worked on a robocar equipped with advanced technology. He will give a poster presentation of his project during the Computer and Information Sciences Project Presentation Day. The event is slated for Houghton Hall, in the hallway between two computer labs, Rooms 259 and 260, on Thursday, May 9, at 1 p.m. The poster showcases Biliciler's dedication and technical skills.

The centerpiece of Biliciler's project is a robocar outfitted with ultrasound radar, a camera and servomotors, all controlled by a Raspberry Pi computer. The combination of components allows the robocar to autonomously detect obstacles in its path and adjust its direction accordingly. The integration of these features represents a significant advancement in the field of robotics, with potential applications in autonomous navigation and safety systems.

The robocar is educational and provides practice opportunities with a variety of sensors and actuators, Dr. Ataee explained. “With appropriate software, it can autonomously move and decide its path, it can follow objects and people, record videos and take pictures.” Biliciler and Dr. Ataee are working on different Python codes to test on the robocar.

Biliciler's accomplishment underscores the importance of hands-on learning and mentorship in fostering innovation and skill development. Not a part of a course, the robocar was undertaken as part of robotics lab preparation and testing. Biliciler, of Izmir, Turkey, is serving as a lab engineer in the department’s robotics lab during the spring semester.

With Ataee's guidance, Biliciler has not only successfully completed a complex robotics project but has also gained valuable experience that will serve him well in his future endeavors. The presentation of his working robocar marks a notable achievement, highlighting the ingenuity and potential of young talents in the field of robotics, Ataee said.

Woman wearing yellow stands in front of microphone with flags behind her

Kristi Noem’s story of killing her dog points to class two misdemeanor

South Dakota governor’s account of family dog Cricket killing neighbor’s chickens may be an offence, according to state law

Kristi Noem, the South Dakota governor and Republican vice-presidential hopeful, may have committed a class two misdemeanor offence when her fated dog Cricket, a 14-month-old wirehair pointer Noem deemed “untrainable” for hunting pheasant, killed a neighbor’s chickens.

Under South Dakota law, “any person owning, keeping, or harboring a dog that chases, worries, injures, or kills any poultry or domestic animal is guilty of a class two misdemeanor and is liable for damages to the owner thereof for any injury caused by the dog to any such poultry or animal.”

Though Cricket’s chicken attack has made headlines in recent days, however, it was not the main subject of such reports.

Instead, Noem’s startling description of her decision to kill Cricket – and also an unnamed, un-castrated and unruly goat – has pitched her into an unprecedented political storm.

The story is included in Noem’s new book , No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong With Politics and How We Move America Forward.

The book will be released next month. Last week, the Guardian obtained a copy and reported the passage in which Noem describes killing Cricket and the goat after Cricket first ruined a pheasant hunt, then killed the chickens.

“I hated that dog,” Noem writes, before describing how she shot Cricket and the goat in the same gravel pit, the goat having to be shot twice, the second shotgun blast after Noem left the goat to fetch more shells from her truck.

Noem says what she thought she had to do was not “pleasant”, and describes how her actions startled a construction crew and confused her young daughter.

She also seems to acknowledge the possible effects of including the story in her book, writing: “I guess if I were a better politician I wouldn’t tell the story here.”

News of Noem’s tale did indeed set off a political firestorm , with observers suggesting she had irrevocably damaged her chances of being named running mate to Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president who faces 88 felony charges of his own and was adjudicated a rapist but nonetheless maintains his grip on his party.

Noem twice defended her account of killing Cricket and the goat, saying as she does in the book that such actions are sometimes necessary in farming, and show her willingness to do difficult things in life as well as in politics.

But each defense added to her problems.

In the first statement, Noem both referred to recently putting down three horses and advertised her book, promising “more real, honest and politically incorrect stories that’ll have the media gasping”. That drew accusations of insensitivity.

In her second statement, Noem said she could “understand why some people are upset about a 20-year-old story of Cricket” but added: “The fact is, South Dakota law states that dogs who attack and kill livestock can be put down.

“Given that Cricket had shown aggressive behavior toward people by biting them” – Noem says the dog “whipped around to bite me” after killing the chickens – “I decided what I did.”

In a separate section of South Dakota’s codified laws, the definition of livestock makes no mention of poultry, which would have meant the law did not apply to Noem.

But asked about a South Dakota legislature definition that says livestock “means cattle, sheep, horses, mules, swine, goats, and buffalo”, omitting chickens or poultry in general, Ian Fury, Noem’s communications chief, advised the Guardian to “take a look at SDCL 40-34-1 and 40-34-2.”

after newsletter promotion

When the Guardian did, questions arose.

Section 40-34-1 of the South Dakota codified laws – Killing of dog lawful when disturbing domestic animals – says : “It shall be lawful for any person to kill any dog found chasing, worrying, injuring, or killing poultry or domestic animals except on the premises of the owners of said dog or dogs.”

Noem writes that she killed Cricket on her own property.

The following section – 40-34-2, Liability of owner for damages by dog disturbing domestic animals – seems to contain greater potential legal jeopardy.

It says : “Any person owning, keeping, or harboring a dog that chases, worries, injures, or kills any poultry or domestic animal is guilty of a class two misdemeanor and is liable for damages to the owner thereof.”

In her book, Noem writes that she apologised to the family that owned the chickens Cricket killed, “wrote them a check for the price they asked, and helped them dispose of the carcasses littering the scene of the crime”.

Asked if SDCL 40-34-2 indicated that Noem might have committed a class two misdemeanor, Fury did not immediately comment.

The South Dakota laws apparently applicable to the case of Noem and Cricket were passed before the dog’s death.

In her weekend statement, Noem said her story was 20 years old. That would place it in 2004, when she was in her early 30s, three years before she entered South Dakota state politics and six years before she won a seat in Congress as part of the hard-right Tea Party wave . Noem was elected governor of South Dakota in 2018.

South Dakota was the last of the 50 states to make animal cruelty a felony, passing legislation in 2014.
