Why write a short cover letter?

Writing a short cover letter doesn't mean you're providing less value. It means you're placing a premium on clear and impactful communication, which, even by itself, underscores your professionalism.

In fact, there are a lot of reasons why it might be beneficial to stick with a short, concise cover letter.

  • Efficiency : Short cover letters save time for both you and the hiring manager, allowing for quicker evaluations.
  • Relevance : A concise letter ensures that every word you write directly contributes to showcasing your qualifications and aligns with the job's requirements.
  • Engagement : A brief, compelling letter is more likely to capture the attention of busy hiring professionals, increasing the chances of them reading it.
  • Clarity : Shorter letters are inherently clearer and easier to follow, making it more straightforward for the reader to learn your key strengths and motivations.
  • Respect for time : It demonstrates respect for the time constraints of hiring managers, conveying your understanding of busy schedules and time management.

Short cover letter outline

In a concise cover letter, brevity is a strength. So, what parts of a cover letter should an abbreviated yet impactful document include?

I. Introduction

  • Briefly introduce yourself.
  • Mention the specific job position you're applying for.

II. Why you're a fit

  • Highlight one to two key qualifications or experiences that align with the job requirement (try incorporating relevant keywords from the job description).

III. Passion and enthusiasm

  • Express genuine interest in the role and the company. (This is a great place to weave in a specific company value or mission.)

IV. Value proposition

  • Quickly mention what you can bring to the organization regarding skills, achievements, or potential contributions using keywords from the job description.

V. Closing statement

  • Politely thank the reader for their time.
  • Include a call to action, like "Please contact me at [Your Phone Number] or [Your Email Address] to discuss my application or schedule an interview.

VI. Signature

  • Sign off with a professional closing, e.g., "Sincerely,"
  • Include your name, email, and phone number.

3 key tips for writing a short cover letter

Now that you know what to include, here are some tips for writing a short cover letter.

Customize your cover letter for each job

Tailoring your cover letter to a specific job shows you have the experience, skills, and qualifications the company is looking for. Include keywords and focus on relevant experience to align closely with the job description, ensuring your application stands out as highly relevant and targeted.

Use bullet points to highlight your qualifications and achievements

If you find yourself staring at a wall of text, use bullet points to make your cover letter easier to skim. List key achievements (with results!) and qualifications directly related to the job.

Be clear and concise

Keep your cover letter brief and to the point. Avoid filler words and overly complex sentences. A clear, straightforward approach helps convey your message so key details stand out.

How to write a short cover letter

Different than writing a general cover letter (which tends to be significantly longer), writing a simple cover letter requires some steps that focus more on language and precision.

Step 1: Research and prepare

Thoroughly research the company and job role to understand their specific needs and culture.

These details will help you make your cover letter more personalized, which can set you apart from other candidates. If you can find the hiring manager’s name, address them directly and use it in your cover letter greeting. This shows potential employers that you care about the detail

Step 2: Identify key qualifications

Select one or two of your qualifications or experiences directly matching the job requirements. (Use keywords from the job description to align your skills.)

Explain these briefly but with enough detail to illustrate your competence and how these experiences make you a great fit for the role.

Step 3: Prioritize recent relevance

Highlight only your recent career experiences relevant to the job. Avoid detailing every previous role, focusing only on what's applicable.

Step 4: Optimize Content Sections

Identify the most critical sections (e.g., qualifications, value proposition). Then, allocate space judiciously, emphasizing only the most impactful content that aligns with the role.

Step 5: Condense and simplify

Review your content for long phrases and unnecessary words. Aim to convey more with fewer words while maintaining clarity. (And do your best to use contractions whenever it makes sense. I.e., ”I’ll” rather than “I will” or “I’m” rather than “I'm.”)

For example:

Original: "I believe that I have the Python skills and 7 years of data experience that are relevant to this position." ‍ Improved: "I have the relevant Python skills and 7 years of data experience for this position."

Pro Tip: If you're looking to automate some of this process, let's say by writing your cover letter with ChatGPT or another AI program, copy and paste your content into the software, and prompt it to highlight any unnecessary filler words and phrases.

Step 6: Improve clarity and readability

Review your content for clarity and readability. Make sure your message is easy to understand and flows smoothly—avoiding ambiguity.

For example:

Original: "I have experience working with diverse teams, which has given me valuable skills." ‍ Improved: "I've successfully collaborated with diverse teams on five major projects, resulting in a 20% increase in project efficiency." ‍ Best: "I collaborated with diverse teams on five projects, increasing project efficiency by 20%."

Step 7: Review, refine, and proofread

Carefully review your short cover letter for conciseness and relevance. Eliminate any additional words. Remember, every word should serve a purpose.

Then, proofread it (and then proofread it again!). You can also opt to use a tool like Teal's AI Resume Builder with features like a cover letter builder with spell check, which can help you write, edit, and identify typos or grammar issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a short cover letter be.

When it comes to the length of a short cover letter, less is more.

Aim for brevity and clarity above all else. As a general guideline, a short cover letter should be between 100 and 200 words, or about half a page, single-spaced.

This length is just enough to express your interest in the job, showcase your relevant skills, and leave the hiring manager eager to learn more about you from your resume. Remember, the goal is to be concise and impactful. You want to grab their attention and make a strong impression without overwhelming them with too much information.

When should I use a short cover letter?

Short cover letters are ideal in scenarios where you know the hiring process is fast-paced or the recruiter is dealing with a high volume of applications.

Instances such as applying for a popular role or during peak hiring periods, like graduation season, are perfect examples.

In these cases, a succinct and focused cover letter quickly highlights your key qualifications and showcases you as a candidate worthy of further exploration. A well-crafted, concise cover letter not only respects the hiring manager's time but also piques their interest in your potential fit for the role.

When shouldn’t I use a short cover letter?

While short cover letters can be highly effective, there are situations where a more comprehensive cover letter may be better.

Positions that demand extensive experience, specific certifications, advanced educational qualifications, or complex skill sets often require a more detailed approach.

In these cases, you'll want to devote enough space to discussing how your unique combination of skills, qualifications, and experiences makes you the ideal candidate.

If the job description asks for a deep dive into certain competencies or a lengthy history of achievements, a longer cover letter can help you paint a comprehensive picture of your professional journey and precisely align your skills with the job requirements.

How do you write a cover letter?

If you have more time and are feeling up to the task, you might be interested in writing a cover letter from scratch. But maybe you’re not sure where to begin. Here are three simple steps to get started.

Research the company and position

Take some time to look into the company where you’re applying and the position you’re interested in. You can see if the company has been in the news for any achievements or read reviews that might give insight into the company culture.

Read the job description thoroughly so you understand the role. In addition to the job duties and requirements, be sure you understand the expected schedule—is it strictly work-from-home, or is it more of a hybrid model?

The more you know about the place you’re applying to and the role you want, the more personalized your content will be.

Outline your letter

The structure of your cover letter is as important as the content. There are lots of job seekers out there, so you want your cover letter to be easy to read for whoever receives it.

Here’s a sample cover letter outline to follow:

  • Greet the reader in the opening paragraph
  • Introduce yourself and why you’re writing
  • Explain your interest in the job and the company
  • Describe your relevant experience and skills
  • Thank the reader for their time and consideration
  • Sign off with a promise to follow up in the near future

Some people also include their contact information and their LinkedIn account at the end of the cover letter or in a header.

Be mindful of the tone

You want to be enthusiastic and authentic. Express your excitement about your potential move into the role you’re applying for, but don’t make any sweeping, potentially fake-sounding statements about the company.

Don’t be afraid to talk yourself up

Sure, a professional resume will have all the stats, but the cover letter is where you can shine.

Sure, your resume will show you have X amount of years in a certain position, but in the cover letter, you can go deeper. Tell a brief story about your responsibilities or explain how you made a positive impact in that role. You want your future employer to see what you’re capable of and how you can make a difference.

5 Short Cover Letter Samples (& How to Write Your Own)

A simple but comprehensive cover letter is more persuasive than a wall of words. Find out how to write one that’ll impress employers and make them quickly discover your unique selling points.

Aaron Case, CPRW

As featured in: *

A standard cover letter should be one page or less . But that doesn’t mean your cover letter should take up an entire page either.

To help you craft a compelling short cover letter for UK employers, here are five short cover letter samples and a copy-and-paste template, followed by a few cover letter writing secrets :

1. For Early Career Applicants

A short simple cover letter for a retail position with an orange colour scheme.

When you’re early in your career, a perfect attendance record is an excellent point to showcase because it shows employers you’re a punctual and responsible worker.

Including numbers also provides context for employers because they can see what you’ll bring to their organisation.

2. For Recent Graduates

A short cover letter sample for a tour guiding job with a red header and a few paragraphs of text.

This short cover letter sample focuses on the applicant’s knowledge and skills because, as a recent graduate, they don’t have any job-relevant work experience.

Specifically, they’re applying for a tour guide role, and thus highlight their passion for British culture, history degree, and familiarity with locations associated with this company’s tours. Emphasising their relevant interests shows the employer that they’ll fit in well at their organisation.

3. For Mid-Career Applicants

A short cover letter sample for an editor position with a bulleted list to briefly summarise the applicant's key achievements.

By using bullet points, the writer of this cover letter highlights their transferable skills while keeping their cover letter length manageable.

4. For Healthcare Workers

A short cover letter sample for a nursing job with the applicant's name and contact information in a grey column on the left side of the page.

This brief cover letter example highlights the experience of the applicant and their transferable skills, such as their talent for handling patients with care.

5. For Speculative Job Applications

A short cover letter sample with a bold green header.

This is a great example of a short speculative cover letter — in other words, one written to an employer to see if any unadvertised job openings are available.

The applicant immediately explains why they’re writing an unsolicited cover letter, and then uses hard numbers to highlight their relevant achievements to back up their request for consideration.

4 tips for writing the perfect short cover letter

If the thought of writing a short cover letter has you wringing your hands, consider using a cover letter builder that uses AI to write and format it for you. You can then tweak the content to tailor it to your situation.

But if you have time and writing skills, here’s how to write a cover letter that’s brief but still covers all the information you need to earn interviews:

1. Plan your cover letter structure to avoid waffle

Here are all the sections to include in a short cover letter:

  • Contact information (yours and the contact person’s)
  • Greeting ( address your short cover letter to the employer by name to personalise it — for example, ‘Dear Ms Jones,’)
  • 1–2 body paragraphs
  • Closing (request an interview and repeat your phone number and email for the reader’s convenience)
  • Professional sign-off (‘Yours sincerely,’ followed by your name)

2. Use concise words rather than long phrases

A short cover letter is not the place for wordiness. Limit your word use by only using the necessary words to communicate clearly. A helpful way to write more clearly is by replacing wordy phrases with single words or other phrases with fewer words:

  • Due to the fact that → Because
  • In the case that → If
  • In order to → To
  • Concerning the matter of → About
  • Regardless of the fact that → Although
  • A number of → Some/Many
  • In the process of → During/While
  • With the exception → Except

3. Mention only your most relevant skills and experiences

Focus only on relevant skills and experience for the position that you’re applying for when you write your short cover letter.

Matching the keywords used in the job advert in your cover letter is vital because employers scan cover letters for job-specific keywords to determine if applicants meet their requirements.

See how the applicant in this example tailors their cover letter to the job by using keywords they found in the job advert:

A cutting from a job advert and an example cover letter paragraph with common keywords highlighted in yellow to show how the applicant has tailored their short cover letter to the job.

4. Format your cover letter efficiently

Using appropriate cover letter formatting helps you optimise the length of your cover letter.

Good cover letter fonts like Calibri and Times New Roman with a font size between 10.5 and 12 points make it easier for the employer to skim your covering letter for details.

Use 1.5 spacing to make your paragraphs read easily and quickly. Single spacing is also appropriate if you need to save space. However, it’ll also make your writing look denser and appear more of a bore to read.

You should also use the standard 2.5 cm margins for UK cover letters. If you still need more space, then try reducing your margins to 1.25 cm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have doubts about writing a brief cover letter for your job application? Here are the answers to four common short cover letter questions:

1. What is a good starting sentence for a cover letter?

A good starting sentence for a cover letter is one that gets the employer’s attention and makes them interested in calling you for a job interview. It should include:

  • your desired role
  • the company name
  • your most job-relevant information (e.g., years of experience, passion for your work, etc.)

Here are two examples of good cover letter openings :

As a published poet with 5+ years’ experience teaching literature at the university level, I jumped at the chance to apply for the open Poetry Professor position posted on the University of York careers page.
I’m a recent graduate with a Bachelor’s in Marketing and an internship at an advertising agency interested in Aviva’s available Marketing Associate role.

2. How short should a cover letter from the UK be?

A cover letter from the UK should never be longer than one page and only use between 250 and 400 words.

Anything longer than that is a pain for employers to read through, while anything shorter could make you appear lacking in qualifications or communication ability.

3. Is one paragraph too short for a cover letter?

Your cover letter should have at least 3 paragraphs:

  • An opening that introduces yourself and your experience to the employer while mentioning your desired job and the company name
  • A body paragraph that connects your accomplishments to your target role
  • A closing that requests a job interview and thanks the employer for reading your letter

Splitting this information into separate paragraphs makes your cover letter easier to read than if you put it in one big chunk of text.

However, you can make each paragraph 1–2 short sentences to keep your cover letter concise.

4. When should I not use a short cover letter?

You should not use a short cover letter when:

  • the recruiter asks for a specific word count
  • the job advert requires that you show your writing skills
  • you want to emphasise relevant skills and experience that you only briefly mentioned when you wrote your CV

Jobscan’s cover letter templates are clean and professional . We intentionally avoided using flashy colors and design elements when creating them. Why?

Because most companies nowadays use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen resumes and cover letters. These systems can struggle to read and interpret visually complex documents.

This means your beautifully designed, eye-catching cover letter might remain stuck in an ATS database, never to be seen by an actual human being.

By using one of our simple, easy-to-read templates, you’ll significantly improve the chances that your cover letter will successfully pass through an ATS and into the hands of a hiring manager.

It’s super easy to get started too! Simply click the download button to get your hands on a Word document that you can customize to fit your unique situation.

When you’re done writing your cover letter , run it through Jobscan’s ATS-friendly cover letter checker to get personalized feedback on how to improve your letter and make it even more compelling to employers.

What is a cover letter?

It’s a letter of introduction that you send along with your resume when you apply for a job.

The key thing to remember about your cover letter is that it shouldn’t simply regurgitate your resume. Instead, it should support it.

Your cover letter can do this by:

  • Explaining why you’re excited about the job opportunity.
  • Showing how your skills and experience match the job requirements.
  • Addressing any gaps in your work history.
  • Showing off your personality (but not too much!).

By highlighting your strengths and showing your passion for the role and the company, your cover letter can make a strong case for why you deserve an interview.

NOTE : Get inspired by our expertly crafted cover letter examples and learn what makes each one shine. Our examples cover a wide range of jobs, industries, and situations, providing the guidance you need to create a winning cover letter.

Are cover letters necessary in 2023?

While some companies may not require one, a cover letter can still set you apart from other applicants and increase your chances of landing an interview.

In one survey , 83 percent of hiring managers said cover letters played an important role in their hiring decision.

In fact, most of the respondents in that survey claimed that a great cover letter might get you an interview even if your resume isn’t strong enough.

So don’t skip the cover letter ! When done correctly, it can be a powerful tool in your job search toolkit.

Why should you use a cover letter template?

Here are the 5 main reasons why you should use a cover letter template .

  • It saves you time by creating personalized letters quickly and easily.
  • It provides a framework or structure for your cover letter.
  • It ensures that all the necessary information is included.
  • It makes it easy to customize your cover letters for multiple applications.
  • It helps you create a professional and polished cover letter without starting from scratch.

A template helps you streamline the cover letter writing process. This means you can devote more time and energy to other important aspects of your job search, such as networking and researching potential employers.

What should you include in your cover letter?

Every cover letter format should include the following information:

Contact information : Your name, address, phone number, and email address should be at the top of the letter.

Greetings : Address the letter to the hiring manager or the person who will be reviewing your application.

Opening paragraph : State the position you’re applying for and explain how you found out about the job. You can also briefly mention why you’re interested in the position and the company.

Body paragraphs : Use one or two paragraphs to highlight your relevant skills, experience, and qualifications that match the job requirements. Provide specific examples of your accomplishments and how they show off your abilities.

Closing paragraph : Repeat your interest in the position and thank the hiring manager for considering your application. You can also include a sentence or two about why you believe you’d be a good fit for the company culture.

Closing : Conclude your cover letter with a professional sign-off, such as “Best regards,” or “Sincerely”.

Do you need a unique cover letter for every job?

Absolutely! Do NOT use the exact same cover letter and simply change the name of the company and the position.

Instead, tailor each cover letter to the position you’re applying for.

You can do this by highlighting how your skills and experience match the specific requirements and responsibilities of the position.

It’s crucial to include the keywords that are in the job posting.

Why? Because your application will most likely go straight into an ATS database. Hiring managers search through this database for suitable job candidates by typing keywords into the search bar.

If your cover letter includes these keywords , it will be seen by the hiring manager. If it doesn’t include these keywords, your cover letter will remain in the database.

Not sure if your cover letter is ATS-friendly? Try running it through Jobscan’s cover letter checker .

This easy-to-use tool analyzes your cover letter and compares it to the job listing. It then identifies the key skills and qualifications that you should focus on in your letter.

How to write a cover letter if you have no work experience

If you don’t have much work experience, writing a strong cover letter can be challenging. But you can still do it!

Here are some tips to help you out:

Hook the reader right away . Introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in the position. If possible, mention a specific aspect of the company or role that especially appeals to you.

Highlight your relevant skills and experience . Focus on the skills you’ve gained through school projects, internships, volunteer work, or extracurricular activities. Be sure to provide specific examples .

Showcase your enthusiasm and willingness to learn . Employers look for candidates who are eager to learn and grow. Use your cover letter to convey your enthusiasm for the role and your willingness to take on new challenges.

Close with a strong call to action . End your cover letter by requesting an interview or expressing your interest in discussing the position further.

Proofread your cover letter carefully and customize it for each position you apply for.

Cover letter do’s and don’ts

  • Address the letter to a specific person or hiring manager, if possible.
  • Include your contact information at the top of the document.
  • Tailor your letter to the company and position you’re applying for.
  • Use keywords from the job description.
  • Highlight your relevant skills and experiences.
  • Use specific, measurable results to demonstrate your abilities.
  • Try to inject some of your personality into the cover letter.
  • Proofread your letter carefully for errors.
  • Run your cover letter through Jobscan’s cover letter checker .
  • Use a generic greeting, such as “ To Whom It May Concern .”
  • Use a one-size-fits-all cover letter for all your job applications.
  • Simply repeat your resume in your cover letter.
  • Use overly casual or informal language.
  • Write a long and rambling cover letter.
  • Use jargon or technical terms that the hiring manager may not understand.
  • Include irrelevant information or details.
  • Send a cover letter with spelling or grammatical errors.

Q: How long should a cover letter be?

Most cover letters are too long. The ideal length is around 250-400 words. Hiring managers probably won’t read anything longer.

Q: Should I use a PDF or a Word cover letter template?

Either one should be fine. Some older ATS might not accept PDFs, but this is rare these days. Always check the job listing. If it says to submit a Word resume, then do that. Otherwise, a PDF resume works just as well.

Q: Can I email my cover letter instead of sending a cover letter?

Yes, you can email your cover letter instead of sending a physical copy through the mail. In fact, many employers now prefer to receive cover letters and resumes via email or through an online application system.

What makes a good cover letter template?

A good cover letter template is a combination of elements that work together to highlight and emphasize a candidate’s experience and qualifications for the role.

Here are a few factors that make a good cover letter template:

Header: An excellent cover letter template features a header that draws attention to the applicant’s name and contact information. The header may be located at the top or on the side of the page, but it must contain key details like a phone number, email address, and LinkedIn profile or portfolio website.

Balance of white space to text: A great cover letter template is easy to read and carefully balances the amount of white space in the text to avoid visual fatigue for the reader. Paragraphs should be divided in a logical way, and margins should not be shrunk to cram in more text.

Font choice: The best cover letters use font styles and sizes that are both legible and appropriate for the industry or job title. A good cover letter builder eliminates the guesswork by automatically choosing the right font and size for the cover letter template.

Color or design elements: While not appropriate for every industry, a touch of color or a dividing line can help create a more attractive page design and make the candidate stand out in a crowded applicant pool. Resume.io’s cover letter templates that feature color give several options so that you can choose the hue that works best for your application.

Different jobs can require different cover letter formats , which is why we’ve made it easy to switch colors, line spacing, or even whole templates directly inside our cover letter builder.

Cover letter template frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is a good format for a cover letter.

A good format for a cover letter is one that catches the hiring manager’s attention with an attractive layout, easy-to-read font, and clear and concise information about the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

What are the three parts of a cover letter?

The four parts of a cover letter are as follows:

  • The greeting: The way the hiring manager is addressed at the start of the cover letter.
  • Introduction: The first one or two sentences that introduce the candidate and the role they are applying for.
  • Body: The main paragraphs of the cover letter where the candidate discusses their experience and the reasons why they’re right for the job.
  • Conclusion and sign-off: The final sentences that express interest for the role and include the candidate’s full name as a signature.

How long should a cover letter be?

A good cover letter should be around 300 words or within the range of 250-350 words. This equals roughly three paragraphs. Any shorter and the reader may not fully understand why you are qualified for the role. Any longer, and you risk losing the reader’s attention before they get to the end of your letter.

What are three do’s and three don’ts with a cover letter ?

  • Include a header that aligns with the design and information on your resume
  • Use numbers and concrete information to show your accomplishments
  • Leave a balance of white space to text to increase readability
  • Change the document margins to cram in more text or make your cover letter appear longer
  • Add a full street address to your cover letter
  • Go overboard with images, design elements, or colors

What are two things that should always be in a cover letter?

Two things that should always be in a cover letter are the name of the company and the role you are applying to. Hiring managers often look for candidates for multiple openings at once, so this helps the employer identify who you are and the job you are looking for.

Are cover letters necessary?

Cover letters are one of the best ways to increase your chances of landing your desired position. That’s because they give you the opportunity to expand on key experiences from your resume.

While not every hiring manager reads cover letters, the ones that do can often use them to determine who is on the shortlist for an interview. We recommend every applicant write a cover letter to show their interest and qualifications for the position.

How to end a cover letter

We recommend always ending your cover letter with a call to action. This sentence expresses your enthusiasm for the position and politely suggests that the hiring manager get in touch with you for an interview.

You can also leave your name and contact information in this section once again, space permitting. Then, sign off with a phrase like “Sincerely” or “Best regards” and your full name.

How do you address a cover letter without a name?

While using the hiring manager’s name on your cover letter is the best way to establish a personal connection, some companies do not share information about who will be reading your cover letter. In that case, a more general greeting like “Dear (Company Name) Hiring Team” or “Dear (Department Name) Team Lead” can do the trick.

Dear Mrs. Parker,

Since my sophomore year at university, DELL has been an industry trend-setting company which I would love to work for. Luckily, yesterday my colleague Marko Marletti (one of the organization's employees) called me in a hurry to inform me of DELL`s brand new Graduates program. I'm delighted to express my motivation for the entry-level ICT Assistant role.

As a recent graduate from the University of San Francisco with a B.S. in Computer Science, I would bring to the team my strong knowledge of Microsoft SQL, MS Dynamics, MS SharePoint, as well as Linux systems. Moreover, I am very passionate about backend coding, and last year I completed with excellence one of the most prestigious boot camps in San Fransisco - Nucamp.

Almost throughout my whole study, I have been working part-time as a System administrator, as I aspired and was eager to get both theoretical and practical knowledge at the same time. In this role I gained invaluable experience in server maintenance, assistance in the roll-out of Release & Deployment campaigns, setting up and configuring desktop computers, peripherals, and accounts, and assigning security levels. I built proficiency to efficiently troubleshoot a variety of technical issues for staff and end-users.

I feel ready to rise up to the challenge of an ICT Assistant role at DELL. Enclosed, please find my resume, which further illustrates my skills and educational background. Should you have any follow-up questions, I`d be happy to answer them. I look forward to further discussing this great opportunity and DELL`s needs from the Graduates program.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Dear [Mr./Mx./Ms.] [Manager’s Name],

I’m writing to you regarding the currently open role of Project manager at Max Legal, which I came across on your company website. After carefully reviewing the job description, I was delighted to find out that my academic accomplishments and professional background meet all of the necessary requirements.

For the last 5 years, I have had the chance to acquire invaluable experience as a Project assistant in a multinational organization like Hewlett-Packard. I have established myself as the go-to trusted advisor for Project managers and other functional experts regarding

Project documentation excellence. My daily coordination and interaction with the big teams regarding readiness for bid submission have let me in on many insider's secrets from the PM field. One of my biggest achievements is getting the award PMO Employee of the year in 2020.

I am passionate about applying my PM expertise from the streamlined processes in a large corporation to the exciting Project manager role in Max Legal.

In addition, I am certain I can bring a high-value proposition to the team, as I have made sure to accompany my practical experience with getting PMP (Project Management Professional) certified last year. During my study, I have strategically focused my coursework and practical assignments in the following areas:

  • Project plan design
  • Project resources designation
  • Scope of work and Work breakdown structure
  • Budget plan
  • Stakeholders management
  • Project monitoring and project lifecycle management

Lastly, my colleagues say that I have naturally grown to the role of Project manager and I am excited to bring this expertise on-board.

Scholarship Cover Letter

[Scholarship organization name]

[Organization address]

[Organization phone number]

Dear [Mr./Ms./Mx. Recipient’s name] / [Scholarship Committee],

My name is [NAME] and I have recently graduated with my Master in Child Psychology from UVIC - Universitat Central de Catalunya. I have found out about the Scholarship from my professor at Clinical Psychopathology - Dra. Jane Peterson, who believes I would be a great match for your Scholarship program at Child Care Association “Anima”.

Personally, I feel very passionate about working with children with special needs and enabling them to become more autonomous in daily life and self-empowered. Hence, it would be an honor for me, should I be selected for the Scholarship position of Child Assistance Counselor at Association “Anima”. In addition to my in-depth academic knowledge in the field, my value proposition to the organization is also in having 3+ years of Volunteer experience as an Assistant teacher of disadvantaged children via several ERASMUS+ international projects.

Thanks to this work I have practiced with the kid's modalities like Play therapy, Art & Music therapy, and English lessons. Apart from becoming proficient in structuring and successfully delivering Didactical lessons, I have built the necessary instrumentarium of skills to create safe emotional connections and rapport with the children.

As you can see, my expertise is a very close match to what the beneficiaries of Association “Anima” - children with disabilities, need.

Should you require references for my credentials and suitability, please do let me know.

I am really inspired by this opportunity to make a difference in the life of children and looking forward to further discussing it with you.

[Sincerely / Best / Best regards],

Things to Keep in Mind Before Choosing a Microsoft Word Cover Letter Template

Now that you’ve seen so many great free cover letter templates for Word, you’re probably rearing to download one, fill it out, and send it. But before you do so, please answer these questions:

  • Are you sure that you can accurately judge cover letter templates? In other words, can you identify if it really is a professionally designed cover letter template that matches both your personal brand AND the culture of your dream company?
  • Do you know exactly what to include in a cover letter ?
  • Do you have a matching resume template on hand?

If you’re a seasoned job-seeker, the first question won’t pose a major challenge: you’ve already developed a gut feeling that tells you if a random letter template you found online will work for you. But if you’re new to the job market and to the world of business letters in general, you might have a hard time estimating the visual impact of different letter templates, especially the more unusual ones.

Now let’s move on to the second question. If you’re not experienced in writing cover letters, it’s very easy to commit one or more cover letter mistakes —and get rejected as a result. Even the most professional-looking template won’t hide any potential weaknesses in the content of your cover letter. To remedy it, we recommend reading our foolproof cover letter writing guide .

Last but not least: don’t forget your resume! Ideally, your resume and your cover letter should have a matching design. But when browsing through cover letter templates for Word, you may notice that not all template designers offer matching resume templates.

This is why we recommend a safe option of going with a dedicated resume and cover letter builder—all the templates are designed with maximal versatility in mind so that you can use them to apply for any job. And it comes with helpful writing prompts you can use to speed up the process of writing your cover letter. You also won’t need to worry about formatting your cover letter . Our builder takes care of it for you.

And what cover letter templates can you expect to see? Here are just five out of all of our templates.

Expert Hint: Wait—do you even need a cover letter ? Well, almost half of all employers will skip job applications without them!

How to Use Generic Cover Letters?

The following guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to use generic cover letter examples to create a powerful and unique cover letter for your job applications.

Step 1: Select the Right Example from Above

Identify Your Needs

The first step is to identify your needs based on the job role or stage of your career. Review the available templates and select the one that best suits your needs. Whether you’re a student, a seasoned professional, or making a career change, there’s a template to fit your circumstances.

Step 2: Personalize the Header and Salutation

Insert Your Contact Information

At the top of your letter, replace the placeholders with your contact information, including your full name, address, phone number, and email address.

Customize the Date and Employer’s Contact Information

Update the date and replace the employer’s contact information with the correct details, which can typically be found in the job posting or on the company’s website.

Personalize the Salutation

Change the generic “[Employer’s Name]” in the salutation with the hiring manager’s name, if it’s available. If you can’t find a name, “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear [Company Name] Team” are good alternatives.

Step 3: Tailor the Body of the Letter

Replace the Job Title and Company Name

Throughout the cover letter, replace the placeholders for the job title and company name with the correct information.

Customize the Skills and Experiences

It’s crucial to replace the generalized skills and experiences with your own. Highlight your most relevant skills, qualifications, and accomplishments. Use specific examples and numbers where possible to make your achievements stand out.

Step 4: Write a Compelling Conclusion

Express Gratitude and Enthusiasm

Thank the hiring manager for their consideration and express your enthusiasm about the possibility of contributing to their team. This is your last chance to leave a positive impression, so make it count!

Step 5: Sign Off

Personalize the Sign-off

Replace “[Your Name]” with your full name. If you’re sending a hard copy or PDF, include a handwritten or digital signature above your typed name.

Step 6: Review and Edit Your Cover Letter

Before you send your cover letter, take the time to proofread and edit it. Ensure there are no grammar or spelling errors, and that the flow and tone are professional and coherent. Consider asking a friend, mentor, or career services professional to review your cover letter for a fresh perspective.

Remember, while a generic cover letter can be a useful starting point, it’s important to personalize and tailor each cover letter to the specific job and company to show that you’re a perfect fit for the role.
