The key difference between managerial and financial accounting is that management accountants provide information based on the needs of the company’s management rather than merely representing it according to GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). Financial Inclusion and the Role of Financial Literacy in the Philippines

International Journal of Economics and Finance 15(6), 2023. https://doi.org/10.5539/ijef.v15n6p27

Financial inclusion is increasingly seen as a key enabler of various development objectives. While not explicitly one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), financial inclusion is recognized as an important enabler for them. The Philippine central bank—the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP)—has even identified financial inclusion as a “national development agenda” that requires a conscious effort by various sectors to accelerate and enable its societal benefits. This paper studies the relationship between financial literacy and financial inclusion in the Philippines using data gathered from the 2019 Financial Inclusion Survey (FIS). We apply ownership of financial account and use of financial services as indicators of financial inclusion. Based on the results, financial literacy is a positive driver of financial inclusion. We calculated that a one-standard-deviation increase in financial literacy scores increased the likelihood of holding at least one account by 3.7 to 4.2 percentage points. On the other hand, a one-point increase in financial literacy scores improved the likelihood of availing of a financial service by 4.9 to 6.0 percentage points. The other drivers of owning at least one formal account and availing of financial services are age, gender, employment status, awareness of BSP’s programs, income above 40,000 PHP, and being the main household financial decision-maker. This paper aims to promote BSP’s agenda to bridge the financial inclusion gap and raise financial literacy levels in the country. With this study, the authors second BSP’s advocacy that financial inclusion is one of the instruments to attain sustainable and equitable development in the Philippines.

Preferred Learning Styles of Accounting Major Students

Profile image of Arnold Valencia Salcedo

International Journal of Multidisciplinary: Applied Business and Education Research

The general objective of this research is to determine the learning style of accounting major students of a university in Central Luzon, Philippines, and the corresponding teaching strategy for the identified learning style. By conducting a cross-sectional descriptive research design on learning styles among three hundred fifty-three (353) accounting major students, the combination of learning styles that best describe the accounting major students using Kolb Learning Style Inventory Model is said to be ‘reflector’ style using the diverging strategies which are watching and feeling, following a combination of concrete experiences and reflective observation. The proposed teaching strategies will aid teachers in adjusting their teaching methods that suited for the learning style of accounting major students versus the current teaching methods being received by accounting students today.

Accounting students at tertiary education basically prefer different types of learning styles. This study investigated the impact of the relationship among the learning style preferences of undergraduate accounting students, awareness of learning styles and their academic achievements. Participants of the study consisted of all the final year accounting students in UiTM Tapah. The results indicated that the students prefer kinesthetic learning modality, and for the rest of the modalities students found that they are generally well-balanced. The study found that there were significant awareness of learning styles among students particularly for the kinesthetic type of students. However, based on the test conducted, there was no significant correlation between the academic achievement and the learning style preferences of the students. There was also no significant relationship between learning styles and awareness of the learning styles. Hence, types of learnings styles do not contri...

Premised on the theoretical assumptions of social constructivism and multiple intelligences, the purpose of this conceptual study was to investigate teaching approaches which are compatible with the learning styles of first-year accounting student teachers from a theoretical perspective. Being a conceptual study in nature, data was collected from a host of sources on learning styles, teaching approaches, social constructivism and multiple intelligences. The study established that while not all first-year accounting student teachers are able or do not prefer to learn everything in the same way, social constructivist centred approaches are highly compatible with most of the students’ learning styles. Based on literature verdicts, the study recommends the application of the principles of social constructivism in accounting lesson presentations. It is also recommended that accounting lecturers should orchestrate all teaching and learning activities around student needs and their learnin...

Learning styles represent an important factor influencing the quality of the teaching process. Therefore, the research focuses on examining the preferred learning styles in Accounting at Czech colleges and universities. A total of 132 students of two higher education institutions participated in the study. The questions have been worded in such a way as to determine the style of learning and also whether the students are aware of their sensory preferences. The model was based on the VARK model and on a motivation and intent-oriented learning styles. A Chi-Square Test of Independence was applied for verification purposes. A surface approach to learning prevails in the Accounting subject. The second most common approach is deep learning. In terms of the VARK model, the visual and auditory learning styles are the least frequent. The choice of learning style in Accounting education is influenced by the college/ university Accounting teacher who promotes the surface learning style, the work placement mentor who encourages deep learning, and also by gender, with women preferring surface learning and men the deep learning approach. Other factors (school specialisation, previous experience with the subject gained at secondary school and during work placement, secondary school Accounting teacher, difficulty of the subject at the higher education institution, direct contact with the college/ university teacher, professional interest in the subject) do not significantly influence the style of learning. This research has underlined the necessity of determining students' preferences of learning styles in Accounting education, which will allow for further improvement in teaching.

The purpose of this classroom-action research is to improve the learning styles of our students in the study of cost accounting in a private Senior High School in Ghana. All the 15 students in the class took part in the study because they all lacked the requisite learning skills. We gave assignments and tests to the students and provided them with feedback. Students took part in the planning of lessons. They assessed themselves and they commented on our evaluation of their learning. In addition, they used the SQ5R learning method to improve their reading skills. We used observation, interview guides, and questionnaires to collect data. We presented the results in tables and used percentages to analyse the findings. Pre-intervention results showed that most of the students were auditory learners, followed by visual students. A few of the students did not fall into any specific group. However, post-intervention results showed that most of the students preferred kinaesthetic and visual learning styles. The least preferred learning style was independent learning or reflection. In spite of these findings, we can conclude that our students were diverse groups of learners who can be successful and effective if they adopt good study habits.
