This outstanding country attracts thousands of sailor s annually, offering plenty of possible itineraries. Travelers come to Turkey not only to bask in the pleasant rays of the warm sun and enjoy the dynamic nature of the Mediterranean Sea but also to take a breath of its glorious history.
Fethiye represents an incredibly green and mountainous city on the Aegean coast . One of the prominent Turkish resorts combines the pure nature of coniferous woods, emerald green sea with fine sandy beaches, and the remains of great history in the form of ancient ruins. The first moment you start your trip and set foot on the ground, you feel the fragrant scent of orange blossoms dispersed by the wind across the whole town . The next thing to amaze you is crystal air that fills your lungs. In Fethiye , as well as in Marmaris , the territory is immersed into pine forests , and the evening fresh breeze from the mountains makes you wish to stay there forever.
As an internationally known resort , Fethiye is a perfect starting point for the exploration of the remains of the region`s ancient Lycian civilization. You can visit dilapidated Lycian Sites, partially excavated Roman Theater, the famous Fethiye Museum, or many other splendid sites. Due to the abundance of places of historical importance, you will get an unforgettable experience and interesting information every day of your vacation . The city is spangled with hundreds of engaging activities to suit every taste and money.
The calm turquoise water with a white sandy beach protected from the sea, fringed by a dense pine forest, creates ideal conditions for sailing . Besides, with a high-quality powerful sailboat , every traveler can become a captain and take the crew to explore the vastness of the idyllic island .
Turkey has always been extre mely popular among thousands of sailor s coming there every year. But what makes Fethiye highly relevant among dedicated sailors is its stable and dependable winds. Their force during the summer season does not overcome 3 or 4 balls , which is perfect for sailing. The s heltered area of Gocek Bay is good for newcomers, but when you go further to the wider Mediterranean, you have to apply all your sailing skills. Winds can vary during the year, bringing either tropical storms or cold temperatures. In general, summer months feature ideal conditions to have a rest under the sails, while winter can scare you with strong winds and relatively cool air. Speaking about the overall atmosphere, it becomes a bit stifling in July and August, forcing sailor s to enjoy diving in the refreshing sea. The water temperature never falls below 16 degrees, even in winter; it is possible to swim and try extreme water activities all year round. To not allow the weather to ruin your holiday , just check the forecast and leave nothing to chance.
Having decided to see if the above-mentioned naturalistic splendor is for , tak e a look at the weather forecast. As a rule, the weather in Fethiye is warm and sunny for a much longer period than in other destinations on the Mediterranean Sea. The beach season starts in June, when the water temperature reaches +23°C. It ends in October , but sailor s stay in luxurious hotels all year round, even in winter. If you want to experience a relaxing and peaceful pastime, March and April are the best months to come. Autumn in Turkey pushes in its arms those who want to escape messy daily rhythms and enjoy a cool but comfortable period. Depending on the water and air temperature, quantity of precipitation, and the number of sailor s you want to come across, you may choose the best period to spend your holiday .
Due to its ideal location, Fethiye boast s of various opportunities for sailing for both professionals and beginners. The level of difficulty can be called intermediate . Secluded bays and calm lagoons are perfect for those with no sailing skills, while exposed coastline presents a challenge to more dedicated and inveterate sailors. In addition, y ou do not have to worry about crazy yacht owners who have no sailing skills. Every person who intends to charter a boat should possess a sailing resume as proof of qualification, approved by our base manager. This is the guarantee of a safe sailing experience .

Fethiye is a wonderful place to sail, with fine weather, blue skies, and dependable winds. If you wanted a tranquil sailing holiday, then this is the place for you: the cruising ground is choc-full of small bays, reachable only by boat, each one somehow with its own local restaurant and jetty (often free if you eat at the restaurant) to make life super easy. SAILING RATING: Beginner / Intermediate - You can find sailing to suit all levels of sailing in Turkey, with a mixture of quiet bay areas and more exposed coastline. You’ll find even remote bays have places to moor up – like a restaurant-jetty or a mooring buoy, but it's useful to be comfortable using the anchor. Peak season is July to September, but sailing is pleasant here from March to October, and increasingly, November.
MUST-SEE: Check out our full suggested itinerary below, but from Fethiye there’s the 12 idyllic islands of Gocek Bay to explore, the famous Blue lagoon at Oludeniz , ancient Kaunos and the thermal Dalyan mud baths up north, or the sunken city of Kekova to the South..
WHAT WE CAN OFFER: We have a great range of yachts and catamarans available for charter from our trusted Charter Partners, all available bareboat or Skippered. We can also arrange a Hostess, Personal Chef and other crew.
GETTING THERE: The Marina is a short 50 minute drive from Dalaman airport, or just under 3 hours from Bodrum or Antalya airports. We can organise transfers for you - a 3-person taxi is c. €55 from Dalaman to Fethiye. You could also land at nearby Rhodes or Kos in Greece and get a ferry across.
WHY BOOK WITH US? We only work with the very best professional charter operators , who we have met, know, and trust to give you the same outstanding customer service as you'll get from PlainSailing.com.

WHAT NEXT? Use the pink box to search for yachts or catamarans with LIVE pricing & availability - if you have any other questions or requests, get in touch via Live Chat, the Contact Form , or by phone.
Suggested sailing itinerary, wind & weather conditions, marina details, sample prices - fethiye sailing itinerary - wind & weather - marina details.
There’s nothing quite like sailing in Turkey, and Fethiye is an ideal jumping off point to find the secluded bays (each often complete with their own cute restaurant and jetty), idyllic sights, ancient history, glorious nature, and, of course fantastic Turkish food, drink and hospitality.
It’s only a six-day itinerary because you won’t normally take charge of the boat until late on Saturday afternoon, and you’ll have to return the boat to the marina by 6pm on your final Friday evening (before staying overnight and disembarking in the morning) – which means 6 days of sailing.
Nose out, and we’re heading west, south, east, then north to Cold Water Bay. Ideally, it’s worth going slightly further round the coast to the beaches of Oludeniz, where there’s the stunning Blue Lagoon – a wonder of modern nature, and my words won’t really do it justice – google it or search it on Instagram and you will get the idea.
Cold Water Bay is so called because there’s (cold) freshwater springs which also feed into the sea here – the water is colder here, but not so cold to put you off diving in. If you’re after a bit of an explore, you can hike to the abandoned ghost town of Kayakoy on the hillside above: the Greeks that used to live here were forced out by a Greek-Turkish people-exchange in 1923, but Turkish people refused to move into the town because of fears that it was haunted by the ghosts of Greek soldiers. The bay also featured as a filming location for Russell Crowe’s 2014 film ‘The Water Diviner’.
The name of the biggest island, Tersane Adasi, where we are spending the night, literally means ‘Dockyard’ in Turkish, and this is where they used to build their ships. There’s not much evidence of this on the ground, but you should spot all sorts of things if you don a snorkel and flippers.
Going further back in time, the Ancient Greeks called the island ‘Telandros’ and it is believed to be the resting place for the mythical Glaucus, who fought in the Battle of Troy. The island is now uninhabited, but there’s a restaurant for sailors, and you’ll spot more abandoned Greek houses, a couple of churches, some old orchards, and a decent number of wild goats.
Once out of the bay area, head north to Ekincik, tacking up the prevailing wind. Ekincik in itself is a nice enough place to stay, with the lush surroundings of pine trees ascending up mountainous slopes, but we’re mainly here to give you time to get yourself set up for tomorrow – there’s a number of local sites which are worth taking a half-day boat tour to go and visit, which you can arrange in Ekincik.
There’s the (highly recommended) ancient town of Kaunos to explore, ancient Lycian tombs to wonder at, plus the thermal mud baths of Dalyan (which are reputed to take a decade off the age you look), and, for nature lovers, there’s Turtle island (Iztuzu beach) which is the nesting ground for 600 sea turtles during the breeding season. The only way you can see them is on an organised tour, as boats are not allowed to sail up to Dalyan, but it is possible to see all three in a morning or afternoon.
It’s possible to make most of the distance in a single tack if you wanted to give most of the crew the afternoon off to sunbathe, sit and read, generally relax or play. Once you’ve pointed the Helm in the right direction, then perhaps you might even fancy a brief sit down yourself, Captain, and get someone to fetch you some snacks?
Asi Koyu is another beautiful remote bay – this one is regarded as one of the best-kept secrets in the Med, as it’s so difficult for land-lubbers to get here, being so well off the beaten track. There’s a beach bar and it’s a romantic place to spend the night. Enjoy the company of the people you are with. This is the life!
If you’re feeling energetic on arrival, then you can hike up the nearby hillside – it takes about an hour to reach the summit, but the views out over the water are spectacular – but if not, then you can stroll around the local olive groves, take a dip, or just rest up and wait for the sunset to arrive.
The restaurant here, overlooking the water and the boats, is wonderful and makes for a brilliant evening setting (and probably a good time to grab a team photo). Now is also a good time to sample the local Turkish wine (Turkey invented wine, don’t you know? They’ve been making wine here for over 6,000 years!) and to swap stories of your sailing adventures with the other sailors at the bar.
Once you’ve had your fill of Turquoise blue waters, pristine islands, etc… then you can reach back across the bay to Fethiye. Don’t forget to refuel as you re-enter the marina, and then park the boat up pretty much where you found her. You can stay on-board for another night, but then you’ll need to check-out early tomorrow morning.
If you haven’t yet toured Fethiye then it is worth a wander around, It’s a bit of a tourist town in its own right – the main sights being the 2,400 year old Amintas rock tombs above town or ancient Roman sarcophagi dotted around the town. There;s a good range of places to eat and drink though.
Hopefully the crew have all gotten on nicely for the week, you’ve had an exceptional week of sailing and fun, and you’ve really enjoyed your Turkish adventure! There’s a fair chance that you’ve already decided that you’re coming back to Turkey so come back to PlainSailing.com once you have agreed dates (same time next year?), or to explore where else we can find you a charter boat. Have a safe trip home!
Sailing from Fethiye, you’ll notice different winds playing on your sails when you get out of the sheltered Gocek Bay area (where milder winds predominantly arrive from the south-west) into the wider Mediterranean (where stronger winds sweep across the Med from southern France and arrive from the west) – which means you’ll get some great practice at trimming your sails.
In winter, winds can arrive from almost any direction, and can bring (briefly) anything from cold Siberian temperatures to tropical equatorial storms – so it is always wise to check the forecast.
Wind strengths and speeds also vary during the year, but tend to be between force 3 to 5 during summer – which is ideal sailing conditions – or stronger if you head out to the Dodecanese island. Winds are slightly stronger in winter.
The ECE marina is a cute, well functioning marina on the outskirts of Fethiye. It has everything you'd expect of a marina - like decent toilet facilities, wifi, bars and restaurants - plus an on-site supermarket, swimming pool, Spa and wellness centre. It has space for 460 boats.
If your flights don't work out perfectly for the weekly Saturday to Saturday charters, then you might need somewhere to rest your head on land for a night or two. We recommend the Alesta Yacht Hotel (literally opposite the marina), or the Minu Hotel as a budget option.
Yacht classic hotel.

Fethiye - sailing paradise on the Aegean Sea
The city of Fethiye is located on the Gulf of the same name on the Turkish Aegean Sea. The drive from Dalaman Airport takes about an hour.
The Gulf of Fethiye is a paradise for sailors. Many small and large islands are off the coast here. From Fethiye you can explore this island on a round trip with one of the countless excursion boats. Here you will find many small, (sometimes more, sometimes less) secluded bays and also true dream beaches. One of them is the famous Blue Lagoon (Ölüdeniz) with its crystal clear water and white sandy beach, which is about 14 km from Fethiye. This beach is one of the most beautiful in Europe. This is where you get a real Caribbean feeling. However, the beach is absolutely overcrowded in high season and on weekends.
If you don't just want to lie on the beach, but also want to do sports, you can go paragliding from Baba Mountain, which is almost 2000 meters high, on the Ölüdeniz. The Lycian Way, a long-distance hiking trail, also passes the lagoon.
Like many other cities in the region, Fethiye stands on historical ground, in this case on that of the important Lycian port city of Telmessos. Some historical evidence of this time - for example the rock tombs above the city - are still preserved and worth seeing, but much was destroyed in a severe earthquake in 1957. Today the alleys in the old town are a nice place to do some shopping before the trip. While strolling through the city, one encounters traces of the time before the earthquake, such as the Eski Hamam, a Hellenistic theater and sarcophagi. You can get there via Dalaman Airport, just under 50 kilometers away.
South Sea beaches, beautiful hiking trails as well as natural and historical highlights on a yacht charter Fethiye. The Gulf of Fethiye is a wonderful sailing area with countless small bays and islands. To the south, the beautiful Lycian coast stretches along with almost South Sea beaches. Oludeniz beach is considered the most beautiful in Turkey with its white sand and turquoise blue water. Accordingly, it is popular and many tourists populate the narrow headland. Still, it's worth a visit. The clear water is ideal for snorkeling and diving. Behind the beach the mountains begin, the slopes of which are overgrown with green.
The Patara beach further south is also one of the most beautiful in the country. If you feel like hiking, you can follow the Lycian Way in the Bay of Kabak. It leads along ancient trade routes and sometimes runs along the coast, sometimes in the hinterland. The Kelebekler Valley, the butterfly valley, is also near Ölüdeniz, a deep rock cut in a bay in which swarms of butterflies of different species cavort. The valley is under protection, so nature has priority here. On the way through the gorge you will also pass several small waterfalls. In addition to beautiful beaches and nature, there are many historical highlights on the coast such as the ruins of the Lycian port city of Olympos with the Olympos Beach in Cirali or the ruins of Xanthos, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the nearby Letoon shrine. These are just a few places in the rich history of the area, which were created before the arrival of the Romans during the Lycian League, an amalgamation of different cities.

Your first sailing rental yacht stop will be Tersane island which is known as the "summer port". Tersane Island is the largest island in the Gulf of Fethiye and is often also called Dockyard Island. Tersane Island was once Greek populated and was deserted back in 1923 with the agreed population swap between Turkey and Greece. The ruins of an ancient Byzantine house on the island can be seen from the sea. Tersane bay is a small bay, but it contains very rich sea creatures. The island is surrounded by beautiful crystal clear waters to take a dip in after your exploration. Those who love to dive freely have the opportunity to see different sea creatures dancing with each other in clear waters. Dinner and overnight stay will be here.

An early start for the beautiful Ekincik area. The bay itself is enclosed by forest-covered hills with a long beach running along its coast - it’s quiet, unspoiled by development, and like much of this part of Turkey, best enjoyed by boat. After dropping anchor in a peaceful bay, you'll have the chance to relax onboard. There’s no nightlife here but it’s a place to relax and chill out for a few days while exploring the fascinating areas nearby. Here you can take a riverboat trip to see millennia-old tombs built high in the rock face, explore the ancient city of Kaunos, take a mud-bath and relax on Turtle Beach. Dinner and overnight stay will be here on the sailing rental yacht Fethiye.
After breakfast on board, you'll go to the group of five beautiful islands within the Fethiye Gulf. Yassıca islands are an archipelago consisting of large and small islands. They are the most visited islands in this region and are famous for their nature. One of them named Saytanli Ada is said to be the island where the devil lived. On visiting these beautiful islands and their surroundings you can see why the devil decided to call it home. This group of islands is quite small and so close together it makes them a haven for keen swimmers. You can swim in the sandy and shallow sea of the islands or enjoy the unique view of nature while sunbathing. And then dinner and overnight stay will be here on the sailing charter boat.

Fethiye times news – week ending 1st september 2024.
Welcome to our pick of last week’s news from Fethiye and around Türkiye.
Curated from various news sources .
The 102nd anniversary of the Great Offensive, a pivotal event that culminated in victory during the Battle of Dumlupınar in 1922 under the command of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, was celebrated with immense pride across Türkiye, including in Fethiye, on Friday.
The day’s celebrations began with a series of patriotic activities, including the laying of wreaths, a moment of silence, the singing of the national anthem, and the recitation of poems, all honoring the historic significance of this day. Later, at 20:15, the spirit of the day was further lifted with a torchlight procession starting in front of the Fethiye Özgecan Monument and proceeding to Fethiye Beşkaza Square.
The procession saw a high level of participation from citizens, who marched together, holding lanterns and carrying a giant Turkish flag. Fethiye’s streets were illuminated not just by the torchlights, but also by the vibrant energy of those attending, showcasing a collective display of national pride and unity. Among the participants was Fethiye Mayor Alim Karaca, who joined the citizens in the march.
The day’s events continued with a concert by the popular music group Adamlar, which began at 21:30, adding a festive note to the commemoration. The community’s enthusiastic involvement in both the procession and the concert highlighted the enduring significance of the Great Offensive and the shared pride in Türkiye’s history and achievements.

The 2024 fishing season in Turkish waters began on Sunday, with fishing activities resuming under new regulations from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to ensure sustainable practices and protect marine ecosystems.
Fishermen and stakeholders are advised to follow these updated guidelines to prevent overfishing. The season’s start comes after a review of fish stocks and environmental conditions to balance economic and ecological interests.
Local fishermen are prepared for the new season, with an expected abundance of mackerel but a shortage of anchovies compared to last year. A new quota system for anchovies, set at 400,000 tons, aims to sustain marine environments and stabilize market prices. The Turkish fishing industry is crucial for the country’s economy and cultural heritage, supporting coastal communities and providing seafood for domestic consumption and export. Challenges facing the industry include fluctuating fish populations, environmental changes, and international competition.

Amateur fishermen who set out to sea from Türkbükü recently caught a massive 370-kilogram tuna, marking one of the most remarkable catches in the region’s fishing history. Gökhan Aşık, 35, and his two friends departed from Güvercinlik and hooked the giant tuna off the coast of Didim.
The trio engaged in an intense battle with the fish, struggling for 4 hours and 45 minutes as the giant tuna dragged their 5.15-meter-long boat from the coast of Didim all the way to the coast of Türkbükü Neighborhood in Bodrum. After nearly five hours of effort, they managed to bring the enormous fish to the surface.
Unable to lift the tuna onto their boat, the fishermen tied the fish by its tail and towed it back to Güvercinlik Bay. There, the giant tuna was hauled out of the water with a crane, revealing an impressive weight of 316 kilograms.
“We have caught tuna before, but never one this big,” said Gökhan Aşık. “There are very large tuna in the area these days. This fish hit the hook at 9:30 in the morning, and we were finally able to pull it up after almost five hours. We were frightened when it came under the boat because it was so large. We distributed the fish to our relatives and citizens.”
The catch has sparked excitement among local fishing enthusiasts, highlighting the rich marine life in the waters off Bodrum.

Between 2012 and 2023, Türkiye increased its forest assets by 1.7 million hectares, despite losing 255,000 hectares to fires during the same period.
According to data from the General Directorate of Forestry (OGM), Türkiye has strategically implemented prevention, firefighting, and reforestation measures to combat forest fires. This includes using airplanes, helicopters, UAVs, watchtowers, cameras, and land vehicles for timely intervention. Rising temperatures due to climate change have also contributed to the increase in fires.
Over the 12-year period, Türkiye’s forest cover increased approximately seven times more than the area lost to fires, with around 32,000 fires being managed.
Since 2019, Türkiye has celebrated November 11 as National Afforestation Day to promote reforestation efforts.
