As USC cancels commencement, Columbia students worry theirs could be disrupted

As the University of Southern California in Los Angeles canceled its main commencement ceremony because of safety concerns over student protests, students at Columbia University in New York, where anti-war demonstrations led to dozens of arrests , said they feared theirs could be disrupted.

Schools across the country where protests have flared up are keeping mum about whether they will adjust or outright cancel their ceremonies, but some students said they feared a domino effect — much like what happened after students at Columbia became the first to set up an encampment on campus.

Those at other schools, from the University of Michigan to Cornell University in New York, then began to erect their own tents in shows of opposition to the Israel-Hamas war and to urge their schools to divest from companies that do business with Israel .

Graduating college students whose high school commencement ceremonies were canceled or delayed by the coronavirus pandemic say it is just another knock on their rocky road to getting an education.

Pro-Palestinian protest in the University of Michigan

“The top concern that I’ve been thinking about is what will happen with commencement, especially since our first year of college was online,” said Henry Sears, a senior at Columbia University and a co-president of its chapter of J Street, a student group that describes itself as “pro-Israel, pro-Palestine and pro-peace.”

Another Columbia senior, Jacob Schmeltz, said his high school experience was marred by the pandemic.

“I’m a senior in college, and, especially as someone who graduated high school in 2020, I never had a real high school senior year, either,” said Schmeltz, vice president of the Jewish on Campus Student Union.

USC, where students began protesting after Muslim student Asna Tabassum’s valedictorian speech was canceled because of unspecified security threats, announced it was canceling its main commencement ceremony Thursday as protests on college campuses have ramped up in recent days, leading to hundreds of arrests of students and nonstudents there and at Columbia, where the first tent encampment appeared on April 17.

Later the school canceled the keynote address, which was to be delivered by alumnus Jon M. Chu, director of "Crazy Rich Asians,” and the presentation of honorary degrees to tennis star Billie Jean King and other recipients.

As for the commencement, USC officials said Thursday that they understood the decision was “disappointing” but that they would add new activities and celebrations “to make this commencement academically meaningful, memorable, and uniquely USC.”

It will still host individual school commencement ceremonies and other related events, "where students cross the stage, have their names announced, are photographed, and receive their diplomas.”

At Columbia, Sears said, “I am concerned that there could be disruptions to graduation, especially because it is an event that a lot of people are looking at.”

Columbia said in a statement this week that it was “focused on the events at hand and keeping the campus community safe and secure.”

“Planning is underway for commencement, as well, with the same goals in mind for this cherished annual celebration,” it said.

Tejasri Vijayakumar, president of Columbia's student body through her role on the Columbia College Student Council executive board, was optimistic.

She said the encampment is pretty insular, those there don't go out of their way to antagonize bystanders and it's easy for people to avoid it if they wish.

“I am hopeful we’ll still have a graduation. I’m not sure what it will look like,” Vijayakumar told NBC News in an interview Friday.

At the University of Michigan, officials appeared to imply that protests and graduations could co-exist peacefully, saying in a recent statement that commencement ceremonies “have been the site of free expression and peaceful protest for decades and will likely continue to be.”

“The University of Michigan does not attempt to prevent peaceful protests or other speech protected under the First Amendment,” the statement said. “Many ceremonies will have a designated area for protests outside the venue.”

It added that if protests were to “significantly impede” a ceremony, “leadership will take steps to de-escalate and address the interruption.” Officials said that commencement would include security screenings and registration for most events and that banners and flags would be prohibited.

Yale University, where students took over Beinke Square, a plaza at the center of campus, said in a statement that every year “we plan all aspects of commencement weekend to provide our graduates, their families, and faculty and staff with a safe, enjoyable experience.”

“This, of course, includes planning with the security team as they consider anything that might infringe upon a smooth and successful celebration of our graduates,” it said.

Putting commencement aside, Sears and Schmeltz said they have seen and felt growing animosity among their peers on campus.

After a third night of camping out, Police officers arrested protesters in support of the Palestinian cause on Yale University’s campus on April 22, 2024.

Sears said that as a Jewish student, he has felt unsafe on campus but that he has also witnessed "horrible actions happen to my friends who are pro-Palestinian.”

He described an incident Saturday at an event where keffiyeh scarves were “ripped off” some students, who were called “terrorists.”

“I feel like the culture of dehumanization on our campus is so out of control that we just are unable to talk to each other,” Sears said.

Schmeltz said that “Jewish students on campus have been really struggling” this year and feel “isolated and marginalized.”

“It’s really difficult to motivate myself to go and celebrate with my peers who have been so openly hostile and ignorant to many of the struggles Jewish students have faced over the past week,” he said.

Students representing pro-Palestinian organizations could not be reached for comment.

On a more positive note, Schmeltz said, students were working to “come together and figure out exactly how we want to create a meaningful way to celebrate given really difficult circumstances — just as we had to do in 2020 in the midst of Covid."

Among the participants were two undergraduate and eight doctoral students from the Schar School, who distinguished themselves through their presentations of papers and posters. Their topics spanned a wide range of political science disciplines, reflecting the depth and diversity of research being conducted at the institution.

The presentations covered areas such as public perception of political events, the impact of Supreme Court rulings, the analysis of political disloyalty, community sponsorship in resettlement, and the intricate dynamics of global politics, among others.

The students' contributions were not only well-received but also highlighted their professional demeanor, analytical prowess, and engaging presentation skills. Their work garnered positive feedback throughout the weekend-long event, demonstrating the high caliber of mentorship and academic preparation they received at the Schar School.

In the days prior to the conference, student participants were invited to an afternoon workshop where several of their professors, experienced hands at presenting difficult material to a live audience, coached them during practice sessions. The fine-tuning paid off.

The Schar School representatives were “professional, poised, curious, and engaging,” said Associate Professor Jennifer N. Victor . “[They were] doing their best and getting good feedback on their work. I was proud to be their professor, mentor, and colleague at this important national political science conference.”

As the MPSA Conference continues to be a pivotal event for political science scholars nationwide, the participation of Schar School students not only enhances their own academic profiles but also elevates the school's reputation as a hub for innovative research and scholarly excellence.

F ive UCLA faculty members have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation’s most prestigious honorary societies. Ann Carlson, Jason Cong, Tyrone Howard, Thomas Smith and Paul Taylor are among 250 artists, scholars, scientists and leaders in the public, nonprofit and private sectors chosen for membership this year.

The academy serves as an independent research center convening leaders from across disciplines, professions and perspectives to address significant challenges, with the aim of producing independent and pragmatic studies that inform national and global policy and benefit the public.

New members were elected “for their accomplishments and for the curiosity, creativity and courage required to reach new heights,” said David Oxtoby, the academy’s president. “We invite these exceptional individuals to join in the academy’s work to address serious challenges and advance the common good.”

Ann Carlson Shirley Shapiro Professor of Environmental Law UCLA School of Law

Carlson, the founding faculty director of the Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at UCLA Law, is a leading scholar on air pollution and on climate change law and policy, including the role the Clean Air Act has played in addressing climate change. She recently served as President Biden’s acting administrator and chief counsel for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, where she led the agency in addressing traffic fatalities, injuries and crashes and in setting the most ambitious fuel economy standards ever adopted. Her tenure at the agency also included addressing the role of automation in vehicle safety. She is currently writing a book on how Los Angeles cleaned up its notoriously polluted air.

“I am both extremely humbled and incredibly honored to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The academy works to address ‘issues of importance to the nation and the world,’ and I hope that my work reflects and will continue to advance the academy’s mission.”

Jason (Jingsheng) Cong Volgenau Professor for Engineering Excellence UCLA Samueli School of Engineering

Cong is a distinguished professor of computer science and of electrical and computer engineering whose research interests include electronic design automation, customized computing for machine learning and big-data applications, quantum computing, and highly scalable algorithms. He directs UCLA’s Center for Domain-Specific Computing and leads the VLSI Architecture, Synthesis and Technology lab.

“I am truly honored and humbled by the election to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which includes so many thought-leaders, innovators and educators whom I have long admired. I would like to share this tremendous recognition with all my graduate students, postdocs, collaborators and family members.”

Tyrone Howard Pritzker Family Professor of Education UCLA School of Education & Information Studies

Howard is the co–faculty director of the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools,  the founder and leader of the UCLA Black Male Institute  and the co-director of the UCLA Pritzker Center for Stengthening Children and Families. His work addresses issues tied to race, culture, access and educational opportunity for minoritized student populations in Los Angeles and beyond, and his research has helped illuminate the challenges and complexities, as well as the strengths and resilience, that Black and brown students bring to their pursuit of education and learning. A fellow of the National Academy of Education and the 2023–24 president of American Education Research Association, Howard is the author of the books “Equity Now” and of “Why Race and Culture Matter in Schools: Closing the Achievement Gap in America’s Classrooms,” among other publications.

“Election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is an incredible honor and recognition. It is a reminder of why the work that we do has to serve the public good in an impactful and transformative way. I’m honored to be among so many individuals who have and continue to make a difference in our society.”

Thomas Smith Distinguished research professor Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, UCLA College

Smith, the founding director of the  Center for Tropical Research at the  Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA, is an expert on biodiversity in tropical rainforests. Combining molecular genetics and field biology, he has identified new theories of how speciation occurs in rainforests, found more effective ways of prioritizing regions for conservation and investigated how biodiversity is generated and maintained in tropical rainforests. As the founding director of the Congo Basin Institute, he has contributed local training, education and research in pursuit of solutions to critical issues facing the Congo Basin, including climate change, food security, biodiversity and human health.

“It’s a tremendous honor to have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. I am excited about using this platform to advance my work in finding solutions for conserving biodiversity, particularly in the tropics.”

Paul Taylor Presidential Professor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy, UCLA College

Taylor’s research focuses primarily on aesthetics, the philosophy of race, American philosophy and Africana philosophy. The author of “Black Is Beautiful: A Philosophy of Black Aesthetics” and “Race: A Philosophical Introduction,” Taylor is currently working on a book project for Oxford University Press on third-wave race thinking, a book for University of Chicago Press called “Dark Futures,” and a Mellon-funded metastudy of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

“What an unexpected but welcome honor. It’s gratifying to have one’s work acknowledged and appreciated in this way. I quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson — a fellow Academy member — in my acceptance letter: ‘But do your work and I shall know you.’ I’ve tried to do the work. It’s nice to have that seen.”

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences  was founded in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock and others. Previous academy members include George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Margaret Mead, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and more than 125 UCLA faculty members, including Chancellor Gene Block and Nobel Prize winner Andrea Ghez.

Induction ceremonies for new members will take place in Cambridge, Massachusetts, this September.
