It’s never too early to start creating a plan of attack for garnering scholarship funds, especially for graduate students who completed their baccalaureate degree a few years earlier and may be rusty on the process. While the majority of scholarships have varied requirements and deadlines, a lot of materials can be reworked and suitably used for numerous applications.

Start researching! Now is a great time for students to familiarize themselves with institutional scholarships at prospective schools, use scholarship databases to learn about private grants, and start pulling together paperwork needed for the Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA ® ). Think outside the box and do expansive research during this time: don’t limit searches to scholarships related to intended areas of study. Think about exceptional factors that may qualify you for other funds, including those specific to minorities, genders, regional areas, income levels, or future career aspirations.

Apply for the FAFSA ® . This application opens on January 1 and is rolling, so the sooner students are able to get it in, the better their chances. Graduate students need to use their own financial records and file as an independent, so make sure you have all documentation ready to go. The U.S. Department of Education provides a helpful list of all needed paperwork.

A large number of scholarship and grant applications require one to three recommendation letters from previous professors, work supervisors and/or personal contacts who can speak to a student’s merit. With varied deadlines and busy schedules in mind, it’s best to contact anyone you may wish to speak on your behalf well in advance of any submission dates. Some scholarship panels contact referees directly, so make sure you’ve made all of your contacts aware that you’ve provided their contact details.

Begin working on your personal statement. Graduate level essays will be put under the microscope by admissions panels, so it’s worth your time to get this right. They’ll want you to demonstrate how skills in critical thinking, analysis, self-awareness, and subject mastery have developed through previous education, and see that you’ve considered how a graduate degree will serve your goals for the future.

You should also use this time to select any required writing samples and work with a trusted mentor or former professor to fine tune them. Some require entire papers while others require excerpts, so getting them under the eyes of a professional will help in objectively selecting your best work.

Now that you’re aware of different scholarships available, make a calendar. Scholarship deadlines span the year, so it’s important to create an overarching timeline of all the funding opportunities you wish to go after and give yourself deadlines to ensure all applications can be completed on time.

The majority of graduate scholarship applications will be due during these months, so focus your efforts on making sure each is completed with full attention on individual requirements. The majority can be submitted online, but a few outliers still require them to be printed and mailed. Others may require a phone interview for serious candidates, so be sure all of your contact details are up-to-date.

Most application panels let prospective awardees know whether or not they’ve been granted funds during these months. If you’ve been awarded multiple institutional scholarships or grants, now is the time to take a closer look at those programs and decide which school is the best academic and personal fit for you. Once decided, let both your chosen school and those you elected not to attend know of your decision.

If you didn’t receive enough funds to fully cover your education, now is also the time to research and secure funding from other sources. The FAFSA ® application also serves as a qualifier for a number of federal loans, which experts recommend as the best type of loan given their low, fixed interest rates, income-based repayment options, and opportunities for postponement.

As of 2014, graduates of four-year degree programs left school with an average of $28,950 in student loan debt. Meanwhile, the most recent NCES data on graduate degree program costs, while acknowledging the great variance amongst programs, found public and private master’s programs average $26,288 and $61,104, respectively.

While students can’t erase previous loans, they can avoid further debt and pay for their graduate education with a mix of scholarships, grants and fellowships. Though in the past it seemed the only way to secure graduate funding was through fellowships or loans, today’s scholars have a wide variety of scholarships and grants available to them. The cost of master’s degrees varies widely among subject areas: a medical degree at a top 10 private school will set students back by $278,000, while an in-state student could get an excellent education in environmental science at a public school for less than $40,000.

Regardless of their intended degree path, students can take actions to help cut their costs and graduate without crippling student debt.

What does graduate school cost these days?

The National Center for Education Statistics released its latest data on the average costs of graduate tuition and required fees for 2014. Some of the overall yearly costs are detailed below. These should be multiplied by either two or three, depending on the amount of full-time study required for graduation.

To get a better sense of the overall disparages between degree costs, the table below highlights a few common graduate degree paths along with their average annual cost of tuition.

Why don’t students apply for these free funds?

While grants constituted 52 percent of all undergraduate funding for the 2012-13 academic year, it only accounted for 30 percent of graduate funding. Despite federally funded post-baccalaureate grants increasing dramatically in the last decade – from $611 million in 2002-03 to $1.8 billion in 2012-13 – graduate students are still borrowing an average of $17,230 each year in federal loans.

Funds are available, with options ranging from institutional and private scholarships to federal grants and employer assistance programs. Perhaps the biggest issue is ensuring all students are filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ® ). This federal document not only gives students access to low-interest loans, it also qualifies them for federal grants and work-study programs.

In the latest National Postsecondary Student Aid Study , data showed 73.5 percent of all graduate students received federal aid in the form of grants, tuition waivers, loans, or work-study programs. Given that the FAFSA ® is based off a student’s independent income at the graduate level, it is likely many are leaving unused funds on the table.

Graduate students also face a shortage of time. With many working part- or full-time while taking the GRE, completing applications and beginning programs, finding time to apply for scholarships may seem impossible. Thankfully, once prospective students have done the groundwork for one application, more follow quickly.

Does it take a ton of effort to secure scholarships?

The scholarship application process can seem time-consuming and laborious for those without an action plan. While it’s true students must devote time and consideration to their applications to be competitive, it’s often less work than imagined. Common steps include:

Graduate students have thousands of scholarship and grant opportunities available to them, with a few perennial favorites attracting the attention of students across the country. While applying for these will guarantee stiff competition, they are also popular for good reasons. The possibilities for full funding, attending a prestigious graduate program, and landing an exciting postgraduate opportunity are all possibilities for students receiving these impressive scholarships.

This fully funded fellowship allows graduate students to research and study abroad for one full academic year in a variety of disciplines.

Sponsored through the National Inventors Hall of Fame, this $15,000 scholarship empowers young inventors studying STEM-related degrees to become the leading creators of the next generation.

The Truman Scholarship foundation provides graduate students with up to $30,000 to pursue careers in education, advocacy, nonprofit leadership, or public service.

This prestigious program is the oldest fellowship in America, offering a fully paid two-year education at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

This fellowship program focused on graduate students pursuing studies in arts, humanities and the social sciences provides full funding for two years of postgraduate study at any of over 100 participating institutions.

FACT OR FICTION: GRAD SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS

With a multitude of federal departments, higher education institutions and private institutions offering myriad scholarships, sometimes wires can get crossed. The following section outlines some of the most common truths and misconceptions about scholarships and sets the record straight once and for all.

It’s true: there are a lot of scholarships available specifically to minority students and other special populations, but there are plenty of other scholarships open to all students. A 2011 report by FinAid found white students still receive over 75 percent of all merit-based scholarships and are 40 percent more likely than minority students to be awarded a private scholarship.

While this may be true for scholarships that don’t require many supporting documents, rigorous applications seeking essays, recommendations and a thoughtful personal statement often weed out many students looking for quick funds. It may take longer, but these scholarships almost always have fewer applicants.

Academic scholarships look for top grades, but many scholarships are focused on other factors such as extracurricular activities, volunteerism or intended major. As of 2011, only 10 percent of scholarships from private foundations were solely awarded on academic performance.

It’s wise not to put all your eggs in one basket. Even for students with a stellar academic history and an unending list of achievements, being awarded a scholarship is never a given. The latest statistics provided by the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study found 3.7 percent of graduate students received private fellowship funds, averaging under $5,800.

Scholarship and grant funds can dramatically reduce the overall cost of higher education, but you’ll likely still have to pay a certain amount out of pocket or take out a small loan. According to U.S. News & World Report , only .3 percent of all students are able to cover all costs with only scholarships or grants.

Out of all prospective scholarship sources, nearly 73 percent of funds are provided directly by the institution. As of 2013, this amount averaged $5,645 annually. Most colleges automatically consider prospective students for these scholarships once accepted, but it’s worth it to speak with the school’s financial aid counselor to ensure there are no additional applications.

There’s a misconception that only economically disadvantaged students receive scholarships. While there are a number of scholarships aimed specifically at this population, students from varied economic levels qualify for this type of funding. California’s Student Aid Commission has a scholarship program specifically for students from middle-class families, while a recent report found students hailing from the top 25 percent also received more than one-quarter of all merit-based scholarships.

Many scholarships require similar information, so once you’ve done the leg-work for the first application, you can often reword this text to make it usable for numerous scholarships. Keep a document with each variation, making it easy to pull previous answers and fit them to the application at hand.

Government grants provide only a small portion of overall funding, with private and institutional scholarships contributing significantly to overall funding packages. In the 2012-13 academic year, private foundations awarded more than $6.2 billion dollars.

In addition to multi-year scholarships, a number of non-renewable or one-time scholarships are also available and can be applied for even after being accepted to and beginning a graduate level program. Even if you’re concerned you didn’t receive as much funding as you’d hoped for in the first year, seek out scholarships, fellowships or grants specific to those who have already completed one year.

In the previous academic year, students left $2.9 billion in untapped grant funds supplied by the federal government. 47 percent of students did not even fill out the FAFSA ® , making them ineligible to receive a Pell Grant. As of the 2013-2014 academic year, the average annual Pell Grant was $3,629.

Scholarship scams abound, with numerous shady operations offering to help students find untapped funds for a fee. The University of New Mexico offers helpful advice about scholarships websites to be wary of, including those that charge a processing fee or offer to submit the application on the student’s behalf.

Who Qualifies: LGBTQ+ City University of New York students may qualify for a CLAGS graduate school fellowship. They provide financial support to graduate degree-seekers writing their dissertation. Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Who Qualifies: Each year, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) awards scholarships to 10,000 Hispanic students with a minimum 2.5 undergraduate or graduate GPA. Although HSF uses a February 15 application deadline, the fund requests extra documents from finalists, such as official transcripts.

Who Qualifies: The Asian Pacific Fund awards the Hsiao Memorial Social Sciences Scholarship to an Asian American graduate student majoring in economics or a related field. Other requirements include a minimum 3.0 graduate GPA and U.S. citizenship. The scholarship does not renew, and recipients may not reapply the following year.

United Negro College Fund

Who Qualifies: The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) awards funding to African American students attending a historically Black college or university. You can select from different programs, such as the UNCF STEM Scholars Program or the UNCF/Koch Scholars Program. Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship , established in 1902, provides full funding for students from the United States to pursue a post-graduate degree at the University of Oxford.

As the oldest and arguably most prestigious international scholarship in the world, the competition for a Rhodes is exceptionally high. Applicants must first earn a nomination from their undergraduate university to be considered for the Rhodes. Out of a pool of 800-1,500 exceptional students, only 32 receive the award each year. 

Marshall Scholarship

Annual Deadline: Early October, check website for exact date

The Marshall Scholarship annually provides up to 50 high-achieving students from the United States the opportunity to pursue a post-graduate or doctoral degree at any institution in the United Kingdom.

The award includes full funding of tuition, textbook expenses, room and board, research fees, and travel between the U.S. and the U.K. for the duration of the program of study, typically two years. The award can be extended to include a third year under certain circumstances. 

Barry Goldwater Scholarship

Annual Deadline: Last Friday in January

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship provides up to $7,500 to rising undergraduate juniors and seniors studying natural science, mathematics, or engineering who plan to pursue a career in research. Though not a grad school scholarship, many Goldwater recipients go on to receive prestigious academic awards for future studies, as the Goldwater indicates exemplary academic merit. Approximately 300 students receive the award annually.

Students must be enrolled as full-time students in an accredited United State institution and hold at least sophomore status in order to be eligible. Applicants must be citizens of the United States, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents with the intent to become U.S. citizens. Students must be nominated by a Goldwater at their university. 

Harry S. Truman Scholarship

Annual Deadline: First Tuesday in February

Named after the 33 rd president of the United States, the Truman Scholarship provides students planning on pursuing careers in public service with $30,000 to be used for graduate studies. The awards committee seeks students with strong leadership skills and a demonstrated background in public service. After completing degree programs, Truman recipients are required to work in public service for three to seven years.

To receive a Truman Scholarship, students must first be nominated by faculty representative (or a faculty member willing to serve in this position) at their home university. Universities are only permitted to nominate four students each year, so larger or more academically rigorous universities might old internal competitions for qualifying students. Each year, over 600 students are nominated by their universities, and between 55 and 65 candidates are selected to receive the award. To be eligible, applicants must be United States citizens or nationals. 

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

Annual Deadline: Late October or Early November, check website for exact date

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship provides a $34,000 stipend and $12,000 allowance for educational costs per year for up to three years to exceptional students pursuing research-based work in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology fields. The fellowship is the oldest scholarship program specifically for those pursuing STEM-related graduate degrees.

To be eligible, students must be United States citizens, nationals, or permanent residents. The National Science Foundation strongly encourages under represented members of the scientific community, including women, minorities, and people of color, to apply for the fellowship. Awards are given in all research-based STEM fields, including psychology and social sciences, as well as hard sciences. 

George J. Mitchell Scholarship

Annual Deadline: Late September, check website for exact date

The George J. Mitchell Scholarship offers up to 12 United States students the opportunity to pursue a graduate degree at any institution in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. The scholarship includes full tuition, housing costs, and a monthly stipend for the duration of one year.

To be eligible, applicants must be United States citizens between 18 and 30 years old, and they must hold a bachelor’s degree before beginning the Mitchell Scholarship program. 

Churchill Scholarship

Annual Deadline: Mid to Late October, check website for exact date

The Churchill Scholarship provides 15 United States students with the opportunity to study for one year at the University of Cambridge’s Churchill College, the only STEM-focused college at Cambridge. The scholarship was established by Winston Churchill to promote scientific inquiry and exchange between the United States and the United Kingdom.

Recipients of the award receive approximately $60,000, used to cover all tuition and fees, textbook expenses, accommodation, travel to and from the United States, and visa costs. Recipients are also eligible for an additional research stipend. To be eligible, students must be United States citizens, and they must be senior undergraduate students applying from a participating university. In 2017, the Churchill Foundation launched the Kanders Churchill Scholarship in an attempt to bridge a growing gap between science and public policy. Citizenship requirements for the Kanders Churchill Scholarship remain the same, but applicants may apply from any university in the United States, so long as they hold a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field. Kanders Churchill Scholarship recipients will attend Churchill College while pursuing a Master’s in Public Policy.

How to win scholarships for graduate students

As someone who has already gone through the process of earning your undergraduate degree, you probably have some experience with applying for scholarships. However, students applying for graduate scholarships would do well to emphasize a few different points to help ensure successful applications.

Graduate students typically have a more specific idea of their future career goals than undergraduate students. Make sure to emphasize this in your application and include all the particular things you hope to accomplish. Need-based financial aid for grad school

Need-based financial aid is another important way to pay for graduate school. For graduate school, need-based aid can include both grants (that don’t need to be repaid) and student loans (that do need to be repaid).

For need-based graduate school financial aid, students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA . This allows students to be considered for both need-based grants and federal student loans. Some colleges may also require additional forms, so always check with your specific graduate program for more details about their financial aid process.

Many colleges may also require students to submit the CSS Profile , which is a financial aid application that is hosted by the College Board. The CSS Profile is how students can access institutional financial aid from the universities.

University-specific merit scholarships

Many graduate schools will also offer university-specific scholarship opportunities. You should check with the graduate programs that you are applying for for more information about scholarship opportunities that you may be eligible for.

Marshall Scholarships are for exceptional students from the United States wishing to study at a British university. Commonwealth Scholarships

Need-based scholarships  

These scholarships are based on a student's and/or their family’s financial situation. Eligibility requirements may vary based on the kind of scholarship. 

Merit scholarships

Based on achievement, merit scholarships are awarded in areas like academics, artistry, and athletics. Some merit scholarships take financial need into consideration but their primary objective is to reward talent. 

These awards often relate to your field and are typically need-based. Grants are like scholarships in the sense that you don’t have to pay them back.

Fellowships

Fellowships for graduate students usually fund short-term opportunities to study or conduct research in a specific field. They are typically awarded for academic excellence and can include an internship, service commitment, or offer a stipend. Fellowship opportunities can be found in most graduate fields.

Scholarships are awarded for different criteria. As you explore opportunities, here are a couple ways to consider your search:  

• Field: Look for scholarships based on your field, particularly if you’re involved in STEM subjects or other areas where your expertise may be in high demand. Research councils in most disciplines also provide grants for research-based study.
• Region: There are a lot of national scholarships with name recognition, but it can be easy to miss scholarships offered by your community or region. Search for scholarship opportunities by state , or contact your local department of education.
• Demographic: Scholarships are available to promote study for specific populations and support students with diverse racial, religious, and/or ethnic backgrounds and orientations. These include but are not limited to scholarships for women , first-generation college students , and students with disabilities .
• Service: If you are a current or former service program member—such as through AmeriCorps or Peace Corps—you may be eligible for an educational award through your program, and/or scholarships through your school. There are also graduate school scholarships for veterans available to those with military service.

Consider making connections through informational interviews , as well as building relationships with your colleagues and supervisors. In addition to securing potential funding through employer tuition assistance , those you work with may have connections to funding opportunities in the sector.

Alongside this more formalized networking, tap into your connections through family and friends. Those who know you best can act as an extra set of ears and eyes for opportunities. They may also know of scholarships beyond those available in your specific field.

At your undergraduate institution and prospective grad schools

Tap into the resources available to you through both your undergraduate and prospective graduate institutions. Career centers, professors, department chairs, and academic advisors are all great sources of information.

Through professional associations 

Professional associations can be found across most disciplines and may provide scholarships and grants for members to advance their education or develop professionally. Use your network to make connections and pursue opportunities at these associations. Additionally, consider signing up for newsletters or publications from these associations, as they may advertise scholarships and funding opportunities in the field. 

In your local community

Institutions, organizations, and businesses usually offer scholarships to assist students in their communities. Civic clubs like Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions are great local sponsors. 

At your library

Contact your local library for help with finding information and resources about available grants and scholarships, as well as educational materials to help you apply for grad school funding.

How to apply for grad school scholarships 

Scholarship selection committees receive many applications, so it's important that you're clear and concise. When sharing about yourself, talk about your unique skills and achievements and how graduate school (and this scholarship in particular!) will support your long-term goals.

Be sure to also communicate your achievements in relation to the priorities and goals of each scholarship you’re pursuing. For example, a scholarship sponsored by your state might be most interested in how you would take your learnings from a law degree and support civic engagement in your local community. A professional association scholarship that wants to support the next generation of legal scholars may want to hear about how your studies will support the field and contribute to the values of the association. 

Finding and applying for scholarships can be time consuming, so it’s important to begin the process as early as you can. Make sure to leave time to request additional application materials like official transcripts or letters of recommendation, and keep copies of your application for your records.

Paying for your education.

We award millions of dollars in scholarships to graduate-level students each year to recognize need and merit. While our scholarships may not completely cover your costs, they can be part of a multi-source financial aid package that helps you gain access to NYU Steinhardt’s academic and professional opportunities.

We strongly encourage all US citizens and permanent residents to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be eligible for the greatest range of aid. We must receive a FAFSA by March 1 for summer/fall enrollment or November 1 for spring enrollment in order to consider you for School-based scholarships.  Learn more about applying for financial aid .

Unless otherwise noted, our scholarships are for full-time, on-campus, US citizen or permanent resident students. Students receiving Tuition Remission from NYU are not eligible for school-based scholarships.

Scholarship deadlines are firm, so do not wait for your admissions decision before submitting your FAFSA and/or scholarship application. Applying after the deadline delays the processing of federal aid and may result in you being ineligible for Steinhardt scholarships.

Scholarships for Underrepresented Populations

Scholarships recognizing service, steinhardt mission scholarships: recognizing inclusion, innovation, or impact, global study scholarships, scholarship for non-us citizens and non-permanent residents, scholarships for part-time students, scholarships for online students.

Diversabilities Scholarship

Steinhardt believes that inclusive education is central to achieving high-quality education and experiences for all learners, including those with disabilities. Preference for this scholarship is given first to students eligible for services in the Moses Center for Students with Disabilities,  including hearing and visual impairments, mobility impairments, learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders, chronic illnesses, and psychological impairments. 

Available to newly admitted on-campus master's degree, advanced certificate or diploma programs  students. To apply, submit our new student scholarship application   using the same login credentials you used to submit your NYU Steinhardt on-campus graduate application, and complete the FAFSA. Deadlines for the scholarship application are March 1 for Fall/Summer start and November 1 for Spring.

First Generation Scholarship

Recipients of this award must be in the first generation of their family to have completed a bachelor’s degree and have the potential to excel academically based on demonstrated success.

Available to newly admitted on-campus master's degree, advanced certificate or diploma programs students.  To apply, submit our  new student scholarship application  using the same login credentials you used to submit your NYU Steinhardt on-campus graduate application, and complete the FAFSA. Deadlines for the scholarship application are March 1 for Fall/Summer start and November 1 for Spring.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), and Tribal Colleges Scholarship

LGBTQ+ Diversity Scholarship

Applicants must have a proven track record of leadership and community involvement, working for the betterment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities.  Any interested student, regardless of identity or background, is eligible for this opportunity.

AmeriCorps Alumni Scholarship

We award up to five partial scholarships per year to AmeriCorps alumni interested in pursuing full-time graduate study in one of our on-campus  master's degree, advanced certificate or diploma programs,  starting in the Fall semester.  We do not match the Education Award . You must complete your service by the start of the Fall semester to be eligible.

City Year Scholarship

We award up to five partial scholarships per year to City Year members and alumni interested in pursuing full-time graduate study in one of our on-campus  master's degree, advanced certificate or diploma programs , starting in the Fall semester.

NYU Peace Corps Coverdell Fellowship Program

This program offers a select group of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) leadership development programming and financial support while you pursue a full-time on-campus MA or MS degree, starting in the Fall semester. The Coverdell Fellowship selection process is competitive; a limited number of fellowships are available each year, and availability   varies. The fellowship will provide a 50% tuition scholarship, basic health insurance, and participation in leadership development programming overseen by the NYU Leadership Initiative. Global Study Scholarship

We believe that faculty-led graduate-level study abroad can significantly enhance your professional and academic training. To support participation in Steinhardt study abroad programs,  NYU Steinhardt offers select candidates a one-time scholarship of up to $3,000 to be used toward the cost of tuition, housing, and activity fees for a Steinhardt-based graduate study abroad course or program at one of our global sites or approved study away sites.  This scholarship is available to incoming students only.

The minimum English language entry requirement for postgraduate research study in the School of Education is an IELTS of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component (reading, writing, listening and speaking) or equivalent. Here are several post-graduate funding opportunities for students who are interested in traveling abroad for advanced study, research, professional development, or service after graduating from UT Dallas.

General Post-Graduate/Gap Opportunities

American Councils for International Education  provides grants to support post-graduate researchers in a range of disciplines, including language, social sciences, and foreign relations.  AC’s academic research fellowships take place in Russia, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Europe.

• Deadlines:  October or December of each year

The  American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF)  provides grants/fellowships for individuals to pursue research, study, or creative arts projects in one or more Scandinavian country for up to one year. Applicants should have basic proficiency in the host country language.

• Award:  varies, up to $23,000
• Deadline:  November 1

Blakemore Language Fellowships  are awarded for one academic year of advanced level language study in East or Southeast Asia. Eligible languages include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Burmese, Indonesian, Khmer, Thai, and Vietnamese.  In order to be eligible, applicants must be pursuing a professional, business, technical, or academic career involving the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language.

The  Charles B. Rangel Graduate Fellowship Program  provides funding to prepare outstanding applicants for careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State.  Applicants must be currently seeking admission to a graduate program in a relevant subject area, such as public administration, public policy, international relations, business administration, economics, history, political science, communications, or foreign languages.  Upon completion of the fellowship, Rangel Fellows are committed to a minimum of five years in the Foreign Service.

• Award:  varies, up to $37,500 annually
• Deadline:  September of each year

The Explorers Club Field Research Grants  provide funding to support the fieldwork of serious researchers in a range of disciplines, including climate change, geoscience, marine biology, archeology, conservation science, and more.

• Award range:  $500-5,000
• Deadline:  December of each year

The  Fulbright U.S. Student Program , a congressionally-funded international exchange program, provides grants for recent graduates and young professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and primary/secondary school teaching worldwide. The program currently awards approximately 2,000 grants annually in all fields of study and operates in more than 140 countries around the world.

The  Go Overseas Gap Year Scholarship  provides funding to students who demonstrate outstanding motivation to pursue a gap year experience.

• Award:  $3,000
• Deadline:  April 30

The  Institute of Current World Affairs (ICWA) Fellowship Program  supports fellows for two-year immersive programs of self-designed, independent research and writing abroad.  Proposals are given preference based on specific topics relating to South America, Cuba, Eurasia, and the Horn of Africa.

• Award:  full funding, varies based on project and location

The  Peace Corps  is a service opportunity for motivated changemakers to immerse themselves in a community abroad, working side by side with local leaders to tackle the most pressing challenges. Peace Corps volunteers serve in over 60 countries around the world and commit to 2 years of service.  Volunteer positions are available in a range of sectors, including agriculture, community economic development, education, environment, health, and youth in development.

The  Global Grant Program , sponsored by Rotary International, supports graduate-level academic studies and humanitarian projects in the fields of peacebuilding and conflict prevention; disease prevention and treatment; water, sanitation, and hygiene; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; and community economic development.

The  Gap Year Grants Program , offered by gap year program provider Travel Access Project, provides funding to people all over the world interested in pursuing an educational gap year opportunity.

The  Alfa Fellowship Program  is a distinguished international initiative that offers accomplished young Americans the opportunity to complete a high-level professional development program in Russia.  Applicants must have a graduate degree and professional experience in business, economics, journalism, law, public policy, or related fields.  Alfa Fellows complete work placements at leading institutions, attend professional seminars, and receive intensive language training.

• Award:  monthly stipend, accommodation, program-related travel costs, language training, and private language tutoring
• Deadline:  Nov. 15

The  Andlinger Medical Residency Exchange Program , sponsored by the American Austrian Foundation, supports training for American medical residents in their third or fourth year of training.  The program allows fellows to participate in rotations at a partner institution in Austria for 2-4 weeks, broadening each resident’s experience through exposure to a foreign healthcare system.

The UK government’s British Council offers several scholarships, bursaries, and additional financial support to students, including Chevening Fellowships and Royal Society research grants. Refer to the  Studying in the UK webpage  for a list of specific opportunities.

The  Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) Program , funded by the German Bundestag and the U.S. Department of State, offers funding to support young American professionals to spend one year in Germany.  Fellows will participate in intensive German language training, attend one semester of classes at a German institution, and complete a three-month internship in their career field.

• Award:  round-trip airfare, tuition, housing, and monthly living stipend
• Deadline:  December 1

Established by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the  Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program  provides funding for top-qualified applicants to pursue an advanced degree at a French higher education institution.  Eligible fields of study include Economics and Management, Engineering (Master level), Sciences (PhD level), Law, and Political Sciences.

• Award:  monthly stipend (approximately $1,200), round-trip airfare, housing subsidy
• Deadline:  January of each year

The  George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program , sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance, provides funding to support future American leaders to pursue one academic year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.  Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to scholarship, leadership, and community and public service.

• Award:  tuition, accommodation, and a monthly living/travel stipend of approximately $1,250

Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst/German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)  maintains a database of opportunities for those interested in studying, researching, or interning in Germany.

The  German Chancellor Fellowship Program  provides funding to university graduates from the United States who have an international outlook and are interested in spending a year in Germany to implement a project of their own design.  In order to apply, applicants must develop their own project and find a mentor in Germany to host them.

• Deadline:  Sept. 15

The Institute of Turkish Studies (ITS) sponsors an annual grant competition for scholars in the United States. The purpose of the grant program is to encourage research, scholarship, and learning in the field of Ottoman and Modern Turkish Studies.

The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology  (abbreviated as Monbukagakusho in Japanese or MEXT in English) sponsors scholarships to enable students from around the world to study and earn degrees at Japanese universities.  Applications should be submitted at the nearest Consulate-General of Japan.

• Award:  tuition, monthly living stipend, round-trip airfare
• Deadline:  May of each year

The  Jessie Lokrantz Scholarship , offered by the American Women’s Club in Stockholm, provides funding to support U.S. citizens attending an accredited Swedish university.  Recipients are expected to attend at least one AWC event during the course of the academic year for which the scholarship is granted.

Funded by the British government, the  Marshall Scholarship Program  finances young Americans of high ability to earn a graduate degree in any subject in the United Kingdom.  The program strives to strengthen the enduring relationship between British and American peoples and equips future leaders with a lasting understanding of British society.  Up to fifty scholars are selected each year.

The  Serge Bellanger International Business Degree Scholarship , sponsored by the French-American Chamber of Commerce Foundation (FACC Foundation), provides funding for the next generation of transatlantic business leaders.  In order to be eligible, U.S. students must plan to pursue an MBA, a master’s degree, or a mastère specialisé in a business-related discipline in France.

• Award:  $10,000
• Deadline:  March 31

Several scholarships and grants are available for students interested in studying and earning a degree in Australia.  These are offered by the Australian Government, universities, and a number of private and public organizations. Refer to the  Study in Australia Scholarships webpage  for a list of specific opportunities.

Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Scholars and Artists  provide funding for young researchers who have completed a master’s degree or PhD and foreign artists with a bachelor’s degree.

The  William J. Clinton Fellowship for Service in India Program  is an immersive, 10-month volunteer service program matching young professionals with development organizations in India.  The program is designed to help shape the next generation of leaders into positive change agents.

Opportunities at Specific Institutions

The  Churchill Scholarships  in science, mathematics, and engineering provide funding to American students for one year of Master’s study at the University of Cambridge, based at Churchill College. Established at the request of Sir Winston Churchill, the program is designed to advance science and technology on both sides of the Atlantic.

• Award:  tuition and university fees, round-trip airfare, and a living allowance
• Deadline:  early November of each year

The  Gates Cambridge Scholarship , established by a donation from Bill and Melinda Gates, offers full-cost scholarships to outstanding applicants from countries outside the United Kingdom to pursue a full-time graduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.  Approximately two-thirds of the awards are offered to PhD students with approximately 25 awards available for U.S. applicants.

The oldest international fellowship award in the world,  Rhodes Scholarships  provide support to 32 American students each year to pursue a graduate degree at Oxford University in the United Kingdom.  Rhodes Scholars are chosen for their outstanding academic achievements, their character, their potential for leadership, and their commitment to others and to the common good.

The  Schwarzman Scholarship Program  provides talented young leaders with the opportunity to earn a fully-funded Master’s of Global Affairs degree at Tsinghua University in China.  The program also includes an internship, a mentors network, travel seminars, and learning opportunities with leaders from China and around the world.

• Award:  tuition, housing and food, round-trip airfare, and a $4,000 stipend

The  Yenching Academy of Peking University  aims to build bridges between China and the rest of the world through a fully-funded interdisciplinary master’s program in China Studies. Yenching Scholars create their own study paths by choosing courses from six different research areas within the humanities and social sciences: Economics and Management, History and Archaeology, Philosophy and Religion, Politics and International Relations, Law and Society, and Literature and Culture.

Ruth Finamore Scholarship

About the scholarship.

The Ruth Finamore Scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in nationally accredited either through ACEN or CCNE nursing programs, have completed at least one semester in their current program by the scholarship deadline, and are planning to pursue post-secondary education in nursing are encouraged to apply.

Georgia Southern Robert Noyce Scholarship M.A.T. Program Requirements

We are excited you have thought about teaching as a profession and welcome you to apply to our scholarship program.  The graduate GS Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program is open to all second-year MAT students who have completed bachelor’s degrees in a STEM field.  

STEM majors, degrees, or disciplines that are typically eligible for Noyce support are: biological sciences, computer sciences, engineering, mathematics and statistics, physical sciences, marine sciences, mathematics and computer science, or fields related to these disciplines.

• First-year scholars are eligible to apply for graduate assistantships in the College of Education
• Second-year (final three semesters of the MAT program) scholars are eligible for a scholarship that covers the cost of attendance.

Scholarship Overview

The GS Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program offers up to the cost of attendance (maximum of $37,500) for the last three semesters of your MAT program with a two-year commitment to teach mathematics or science in a high-need secondary school district. The scholarship is awarded as a forgivable loan.

Requirements

All Georgia Southern Graduate Robert Noyce Teacher Scholars are expected to:

• Be enrolled as a full-time (at least 6 hours) MAT secondary education graduate student while receiving the scholarship. 
• Have received a B.S. or B.A. in a STEM field.
• Have graduated with a minimum 2.75 GPA as an undergraduate. 
• Be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
• Commit to teaching for two years in a high-need secondary school district.
• NOT be a “Teacher of Record” for the district in which they are working. Contact [email protected] if you have questions.

Program Outline

Summer programming (step 3).

• Attend a one-week summer internship with state biologists and researchers at the Botanical Gardens at Georgia Southern , focusing on leveraging local resources to promote problem-based learning.  
• Apply to become STEM Ambassadors with the Center for STEM Education .  
• Attend Noyce regional/national conferences, participate in session presentations, and network with professional contacts.

Academic Year Programming (STEP 4 and 5)

• Attend the state disciplinary conference for your content area (Georgia Council for Teachers of Mathematics or Georgia Science Teachers Association). 
• Complete a colloquium consisting of six 90-minute meetings each semester
• Complete one STEM Ambassador activity per semester and co-lead a professional development activity at their spring field placement.
• Complete a full-time clinical practice (student teaching) experience in the Spring in Savannah-Chatham County or Evans County Public Schools.

Teacher Induction and Development (Post-Graduation)

The Noyce program is committed to helping you succeed and therefore provides post-graduation coaching and development plans.  You will receive two years of mentoring for your participation in the program.

Application Requirements:

The application for the GS Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program is open to M.A.T students. We encourage you to apply during Year 1 for an assistantship position and/or to secure your funding for Year 2. Applications are now being accepted. The application has four parts:

• Noyce applicant information
• A short essay: your narrative should be approximately 200 words addressing all of the following:  1) Why you want to be a secondary (grades 6-12) mathematics or science teacher, 2) Your personal and professional qualifications, including any experiences working with K-12 education, 3) Your commitment to working with diverse student populations, and 4) How a Georgia Southern Robert Noyce Scholarship could support your career goals.
• At least one recommendation letter is required.  The letter(s) should be from a STEM professor or professional who can address your abilities and potential for becoming a STEM teacher.  These can be uploaded within the application, emailed to  [email protected] , or completed using the form.
• A copy of your most recent transcript (unofficial is acceptable) showing your undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) major requirements and graduation date.

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

• Recipients of GS Robert Noyce scholarships must be US citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens.
• Undergraduate applicants must be a junior majoring in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, mathematics, or physics, or education majors interested in a dual degree.
• Graduate applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and be enrolled in MAT secondary education program. STEM majors include: biological sciences, computer sciences, engineering, mathematics and statistics, physical sciences, marine sciences, mathematics and computer science, or fields related to these discipline
• Applicant’s CANNOT be a teacher of record while receiving the scholarship.

To qualify as a High-Need School District, the school district must have at least one school that:

• Serves at least 20% students from low-income families;
• Serves at least 10,000 students from low-income families; OR
• Qualifies for funding under the Small, Rural School Achievement Program or the Rural and Low-Income School Program
• Has at least 34% of teachers not teaching in the academic subject area or grade level for which they were trained to teach;
• Has a teacher attrition rate of at least 15% over the last three school years; OR
• Has at least 34% of teachers teaching with emergency, provisional, or temporary certification/licensure

There are several webpages to help you locate high-need schools districts. Since these change frequently, Noyce mentors will work with you to help you determine which districts/schools qualify when you are ready to apply.

The Noyce Team does not place Noyce Scholars for full time employment.

Failure to satisfy the academic requirements of the program or to complete the service requirement will result in the recipient’s forfeiture of the scholarship award with repayments pro-rated accordingly to reflect partial service completed. The formula used to calculate the repayment will be, A = F[(2-s)/2] where “A” is the amount Georgia Southern is entitled to recover; “F” is the sum of the total amount paid to the recipient; “2” is the number of years of service obligation; and “s” is the number of years or fraction of years of such obligation served.

Except as noted below in “Conditions for Waiver and Cancellation” any amount that Georgia Southern is entitled to recover is due within 30 days of the date on which Georgia Southern is entitled to recover such amount. After such time, interest will accrue on the outstanding obligation.

Georgia Southern may waive the repayment obligation, in whole or in part, if it is determined that fulfillment of the service obligation

(1) would be impossible due to a disability of the recipient, (2) would result in extreme hardship to the recipient, or (3) is determined to not be in the best interest of the school district.

The recipient must initiate requests for waivers of repayment obligations with a certified letter detailing the reasons why a waiver should be given. Additional documentation may be requested. Decisions on waivers of repayment obligations will require a majority vote by the Principal Investigators of the Noyce grant and the recipient’s faculty advisor(s) during the student teaching and/or induction year of teaching. The Principal Investigator of the grant, or a designee, will respond in writing to requests for waivers by certified mail within 14 days of a request for waiver of repayment obligation.

• Georgia Southern will cancel any repayment obligation in the event of the death of the recipient.

Recipients must commit to serving at least two years for each year of scholarship acceptance as a mathematics or science teacher in a high-need school upon receiving certification.

If the school is part of a Local Education Agency (LEA) or religious jurisdiction, such as a diocese, that functions as an LEA, it can satisfy the Noyce high-need requirement as long as the LEA meets the two criteria of the high-need LEA requirement as defined in section 201 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1021). A high-need LEA does not have to be a public school system.

Robert Norton Noyce (December 12, 1927 – June 3, 1990), nicknamed “the Mayor of Silicon Valley”, was an American physicist and entrepreneur who co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957 and Intel Corporation in 1968. He is also credited with the realization of the first monolithic integrated circuit or microchip, which fueled the personal computer revolution and gave Silicon Valley its name.

South Carolina Nominees for McWhorter Post-Graduate Scholarships Announced

Kai Kroeger of the South Carolina football team and Ayana Akli of the Gamecocks’ women’s tennis team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of South Carolina.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2024 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship in late April.

The SEC provides the league’s male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship.  The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are announced in May, as well as honored by the league membership at SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Fla.

Last year’s McWhorter Award recipients were LSU men’s cross country and track and field student-athlete Jackson Martingayle and Callie Dickinson of the Georgia women’s swimming and diving team.

A&M's Grottle, Smoot nominated for scholar-athlete post-graduate scholarship

A&M's Will Smoot nominated for postseason graduate scholarship. 

Texas A&M swimmer Abby Grottle and football defensive back Will Smoot have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter scholar-athlete post-graduate scholarship, which goes to the Southeastern Conference’s top male and female scholar-athletes.

Grottle has a 3.88 cumulative GPA while working toward her degree in business management. She will graduate in May and attend law school at SMU. She has earned multiple College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America scholar All-America and College Sports Communicator academic all-district honors during her career along with SEC and athletic director honor rolls. Grottle holds the seventh-fastest time in program history in the 1,650 freestyle (16 minutes, 9.86 seconds) and the fourth-fastest time in the 1,000 freestyle (9:40.14). She recently earned All-America honorable mention, helping the 800 free relay team earn a top-16 finish at NCAA Championships.

Smoot earned his degree in biomedical sciences in May 2023 with a 3.97 undergraduate GPA and plans to attend medical school. He is a member of the SEC and AD honor rolls. He was honored as a member of the 12th Man Kickoff Team, receiving the Brotherhood Impact Award at the team banquet. Smoot currently serves as the vice president for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

4 san antonio high school seniors win 2024 corporate-sponsored national merit scholarship awards, scholars were selected from students who advanced to the finalist level.

SAN ANTONIO – The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Wednesday that four San Antonio seniors have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards.

The scholars were selected from students who advanced to the Finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition.

Corporate sponsors provide the scholarships for finalists who are either children of their employees, residents of the community they serve, or who plan to pursue related college majors or careers. The awards could be a single payment or an annual stipend between $1,000 and $10,000 that is renewable for up to four years of college.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is based on scores from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Less than 1% of the nation’s seniors are chosen as semifinalists. To be considered for a scholarship, semifinalists then must fulfill requirements that include a detailed application and essay, an outstanding academic record, an endorsement by a high school official and a qualifying SAT or ACT score.

There are currently over 15,000 National Merit Finalists. At the end of the 2024 competition, 6,870 finalists will be selected to receive National Merit Scholarships totaling $26 million.

San Antonio area’s corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners:

• Trajan P. Falk of Smithson Valley High School was awarded a scholarship from USAA. He’s planning a career in mechanical engineering.
• Henry H. Guo of Basis San Antonio - Shavano Campus was awarded a scholarship from USAA. He’s planning a career in computer engineering.
• Orry D. Huang of Louis D. Brandeis High School was awarded a scholarship from USAA. He’s planning a career in computer science.
• Eric J. Zou of Basis San Antonio - Shavano Campus was awarded an Honorary Merit Scholarship. The honorary scholarship signifies that the scholar’s educational plans or other awards preclude receipt of a monetary scholarship. Zou plans a career in electrical engineering.
